and in 1904 moved to Brownsdale, which has since been his home. For 28 years
he was a faithful employee of the Huntting Elevator Co. and in 1932 bought
out their interests and continued in the business until he retired last year.
He was a member of the Baptist Church; A.O.U.W.; Modern Woodmen: Lafayette
Lodge 116; A.F.& A.M.; Austin Chapter Royal Arch Masons; St. Bernard
Commandery and the Eastern Star.
He took an active interest in civic affairs, serving as mayor [of
Brownsdale] for a number of years. and was village assessor at the time
of his death.
Mr. Syck had only been ill for a week and the community was shocked
at his sudden passing, as he had planned on returning home from the
hospital on Sunday, but took a turn for the worse on Saturday and peacefully
entered everlasting sleep on Sunday morning.
To those who have known Mr. Syck during all or any part of his lifetime,
they recognize that one of his strongest characteristics was his sincerity
of purpose and honesty with which he conducted every business transaction.
He never moved along devious lines but went straight to the point and said
what he could do and couldn't do and that was final. He was a splendid
citizen in all respects and the county has suffered a loss in his death.
