Joseph Wyborny enlisted June 6, 1861 in Co. I, 3rd Iowa Infantry. He was severely
wounded in a battle at Blue Mound (Blue Mills Landing), Missouri on Sept 17, 1861.

He had a long hospital convalescence and was discharged from military service on Dec 20, 1862.

His knee joint was not movable and he was a tall man who walked with a marked limp. After his marriage he lived at Otranto, Mitchell Co, Iowa.

In about 1870 he bought a farm near Lyle, Mower Co, Minnesota and moved there. In the 1870 census he was listed as a harness maker. Most of his life he was a farmer. He was always ambmitious, honest, a good farmer, who raised wonderful gardens and kept his farm buildings repaired and painted. He was a Republican. He planted trees and kept them trimmed.

He had a weak stomach that bothered him for a time but which he outgrew. He became quite deaf in his older years. Joseph was very patriotic and always attended Memorial Day programs. He held the offices of: assessor, roadmaster, member of school board, circuit court.

He also loved music and played a horn. He often welcomed neighbors to a meal or to spend an evening but one drawback of Joseph's was a very quick temper. He and his wife Nancy celebrated their silver anniversary in 1890 and their golden anniversary in 1915.

After they retired they moved to Mona, Mitchell Co, Iowa.
