Arthur S. Averbook c1944-2020
Arthur S. Averbook
Art Averbook, age 76, passed away on July 2, 2020 at home in
Hollywood, Florida, just two months after being diagnosed with
pancreatic cancer. It took everyone by surprise, as Art was otherwise
in perfect health, playing tennis four times a week and eating a
healthy, nearly vegetarian diet.
Art was born in Austin, Minnesota, the middle son of Mae and David
Averbook. Growing up, Art had tons of friends, was an excellent
student, and was a superior athlete, participating in tennis, baseball
and placing third in the State High School Wrestling Championship. In
college, Art pursued his interest in hospitality, receiving his
undergraduate degree from Michigan State’s highly regarded College of
Hotel and Restaurant Management, and then enhancing his skills with an
MBA in International Business from George Washington University.
During his career, Art parleyed his education into a variety of
opportunities, including: Director of Market Research for the Bahamas,
Assistant Professor of Tourism at the University of Hawaii, President
of American Express Cruise Line Division, and President of his own
company, Co-OP Promotions, where he helped found the cross-promotion
industry, speaking at seminars and writing two books along the way:
All About Sampling and Demonstrations and Ultimate Guide to Sampling.
Living in Florida for 40 years, Art developed deep friendships with
his tennis and skiing buddies and was actively involved in the Big
Brother organization. During the last several years, Art spent most
afternoons with his absolutely favorite people — grandsons Sam and
Simon Kaplan, and Ayden and Parker Gilbert. On any afternoon, Art
could be found teaching the kids every sport ever invented, visiting
nature centers and bird sanctuaries, or just reading and playing games
on a rainy afternoon. Art continued to be happy to share
grand-parenting with his good friend and their children’s mother, Roz
Averbook.
On vacations, Art and his fiancée and 18-year partner, Marcy Ribman,
enjoyed traveling everywhere and visiting with Marcy’s New York area
family, in particular grandkids Emma and Zach.
Over the years, everyone who came in contact with Art was buoyed by
his natural ability to teach and motivate, his constant interest in
learning new things, and his enthusiastic spirit. He signed every
email and Facebook posting with his motto: Carpe Diem! And he lived
his life accordingly.
Art is survived by, and will be greatly missed by his fiancée Marcy
Ribman, his two daughters, Sara Kaplan (Jarret) and Rebecca Gilbert
(Bryce), his brothers Dan Averbook (Ellen) and Chas Averbook (Debbie),
Roslyn Averbook, nieces and nephews Margo Rosman (Jonathan), Joey
Averbook (Danna), Amy Karnilow (Jon), Jennie Kaylie (Matt), Michael
Averbook, Marcy’s kids Alisa Freeman and Eric Freeman (Nikki), all the
grandkids, and 13 great-nieces and nephews, as well as his two birds,
Zoe and Romeo.
Donations in Art’s honor can be made to Pelican Harbor Seabird
Station, a Miami bird rescue sanctuary where Art and his grandsons
spent many wonderful afternoons. www.pelicanharbor.org. Arrangements

Hans Helgeson c1860-1933
Obituary for Hans Helgeson
HANS HELGESON DIED FRIDAY
This community lost a valuable citizen last week Friday by the
death of Hans Helgeson one of the early settlers. For sixty-six years
he lived and labored in this community, where he reared his family and
besides establishing a home, lent his assistance to the building and progress
of the school and the church.
Hans was a peace loving citizen, a busy toiler. Those who
knew him best will miss him the most. He was a pleasant, optimistic honest
farmer, with many admirable traits, with many true friends.
While he had not been feeling at his best of late, he was about as usual and
Friday after getting his mail and having a chat with mail carrier Wm. Murphy,
he complained of severe pains. Mrs. Helegson suggested calling a physician but the pains left him for a short time and he appeared better. However, another and more severe attack followed and Dr. Howg was called, but before
he arrived Mr. Helgeson had passed on. He was conscious to the last of the
brief moments he was permitted to linger with loved ones.
Hans Helgeson was born in Telemarken, Norway, Oct. 4th,
and died at his home on Dec. 1st, 1933. He came to America when 22 years
of age. He was united in marriage to Bertha Olson in 1886, and has since
that time always made his home in Mower county.
To this union were born ten children. One son passed away
at the age of 11 years. Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his death,
six daughters and three sons, four grandchildren. The children are: (Gena)
Mrs. A. Larson, Clara Helgeson, (Anna) Mrs. J.H. Malloy, (Hannah) Mrs. Kelly
George, (Helen) Mrs. A.R. Silbough and (Gladys) Mrs.l Kenneth Nelson, all of
Austin, Ole and Hans Jr. of Lyle and Henry at home.
He is also survived by one brother, Knut Helgeson of Lyle.
He was a kind and loving husband and father, and will be
greatly missed by them all. He was a home-loving man and always thought of
his wife and children first.
A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.
God in his wisdom has recalled,
The boon his love had given,
And tho the body slumbers here,
The soul is safe in Heaven
The funeral services were held at the home Monday, Dec.
4th at 2 P.M. and at the Lutheran church at 2:30 P.M.
Interment was made at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Rev.
Langehough officiating.

Colleen Marie (Bissen) Satern 1930-2020
March 31, 1930 - July 28, 2020
Obituary for Colleen Marie (Bissen) Satern
Colleen Marie Satern passed away at her home in Austin on July 28, 2020 at the age of 90.
Colleen was born March 31, 1930 in her home in Nevada Township, near Adams, Minnesota to Nicholas and Mathilda (Landherr) Bissen. She was the youngest of five children, and growing up on a farm, Colleen was responsible for a number of chores including, taking care of the chickens. To make it easier to haul the feed and water to the chicken coop, Colleen crafted a harness out of an old horse harness for her dog, Buster which was then hooked up to a little red wagon to carry everything for her. After graduating from Adams High School in 1948, Colleen stayed in Adams and worked as Wagner’s Super Value for a short time. She made the big move to Austin, working there as a dental assistant for two years.
While living in Adams, Colleen met the love of her life, Bob Satern. One day there was a fire alarm near the High School and Bob asked Colleen if she wanted to go see what was going on. It was a false alarm, but their romance sure wasn’t! Bob joined the Navy and while he was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, Colleen went to visit him and they were married on August 25, 1951, a union lasting more than 60 years. After Bob was discharged from the Navy, they moved back to southern Minnesota along with their first born of seven daughters, eventually ending up in Austin.
Besides raising her seven daughters, Colleen kept busy with her big vegetable garden as well as sewing most of the clothes for the girls, and they had lots of matching outfits. She had a variety of jobs over the years including driving a school bus, selling Tupperware, and doing upholstery work. Her most recent and favorite job was running her business, “Satern Shuttle” which included a monthly bus trip to Treasure Island Casino which she did for 40 years and just recently stopped age 88. For a number of years she also organized an annual cross country two week bus trip. Colleen was very proud of the fact that she did everything on those trips except for driving the bus and handling the luggage.
Bob and Colleen were crowned the Senior King and Queen of the Austin Fourth of July parade in 2005. On Colleen’s 70th birthday, Bob surprised her with personalized license plates for her car. A lot of people driving around Austin would recognize her car by the “7 Girls” plates.
Colleen was a longtime bowler and won the state doubles tourney in 1996 along with her daughter, Margie. She was also a member of the bowling Hall of Fame in Austin. Over the years, Colleen enjoyed camping with her family and friends, playing cards, going to casinos, BINGO, watching game shows, and especially spending time with her family. After retirement, Bob and Colleen wintered in Arizona and enjoyed traveling across the USA. Colleen was also a dog lover and enjoyed teaching them tricks. One day she received a call from the David Letterman Show for the Stupid Dog Tricks segment and even though her dog knew many tricks, the dog didn’t know how to open the fridge to get a can of beer. She was disqualified. At age 79, Colleen got a tattoo of the planet “Saturn” surrounded by seven stars to represent her seven daughters. She was always so proud to show it off!
Survivors include her seven daughters, Cathy (Diane Erickson) Satern, Blaine, MN, Carol “Coco” (Jim) deLongpre, Rochester, MN, Julie (Terry) Thomas, Mason City, IA, Jane Fallon, Sun City West, AZ, Mary (Jesse) Hyland, Austin, MN, Margie (Tony) Nelson, Austin, MN; Nancy Satern, Austin, MN; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law; many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents; three brothers; one sister.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 am on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Raul Silva officiating. Friends may call from 4-7 pm on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Queen of Angels Catholic Church or the Hormel Institute for Cancer Research.
