Vernon Joseph Schaefer 1922-2020
February 03, 1922 - April 04, 2020
U.S. Veteran
Vernon Joseph Schaefer, age 98, Adams, Minnesota, died April 4, 2020, at
the VA Hospital in Minneapolis after contracting COVID-19.
Vernon was born February 3, 1922, in Adams to Joseph and Elizabeth
(Mueller) Schaefer, the third of twelve children. He entered the Army
in October 1942, and fought with the 10th Armored Division in France,
Luxembourg, and Germany, becoming a cryptographer for Division Artillery
Command HQ. Vernon received three European Campaign bronze service stars
(Ardennes/Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland, and Central Europe).
When Vernon returned home in 1946, he met Elizabeth (Betty) Ulwelling
of Rose Creek, a new teacher in Adams. The town grew during these postwar
years, and construction began on Highway 56 through Adams. With
encouragement from local business leaders, Vernon opened a cafe (the
Pine Room) and the Adams Theater in 1949. On June 15 that year, Vernon
and Betty married.
They welcomed seven children into the family. Despite Vernon’s long work hours, he was always home for the evening meal and the Rosary.
Vernon looked ahead and began taking night courses, got his licenses in insurance and real estate, and, in 1960, opened the V. J. Schaefer Agency. As the insurance and real estate business grew, he closed the Pine Room (1966) and then the theater (1970). The agency moved to the historic First National Bank Building. Vernon sold the agency in 1989.
Vernon and Betty enjoyed traveling with family in the U.S. and Canada, and with other 10th Armored veterans for annual reunions and tours in Europe.
During his 90-plus years in the Adams community, Vernon served with the Volunteer Fire Department, on the Sacred Heart Church board and councils, the Adams Planning Commission, Adams Commercial Club, as mayor, and as co-chairman of the Adams Centennial Committee.
After his fall at home in 2016, Vernon opted for recovery in St. Paul, nearer most of his children. They didn’t bother him too much, so he sold his Adams home (built by his grandfather) and moved to Roseville. Vernon enjoyed new friends and family visits--with a little ice cream each day.
Survivors include: his children Susan (Jeff) Pitman, Richard (Francine), Ann (Tim) Cleland, Peter (Sheryl), Gregory (the late Kathy), Sara, and Jay (Stephanie Malcy); 10 grandchildren (Colleen, Benjamin, Lucas, Andrew, Daniel, Garrett, Connor, Nicholas, Merik, and Ryah), 2 great-grandchildren (Sophia and SeVontae); sisters Rita (Dave) Sheedy, Bette (Harlan) Smith; brothers Conrad (Judy), Roger; and brother- and sister-in-law Steve and Jen Ulwelling. Vernon was preceded in death by his wife Betty, his parents, five brothers, and two sisters.
A memorial Mass and gathering will be held in Adams later this
year. Memorials preferred to Second Harvest (2harvest.org) or a charity
of the donor’s choice.

Marie B. "May" Meyer 1887-1905
Obituary - death of two sisters within a week.
Marie "May" B. Meyer
b. 5-15-1887
d. 12-12-1905
Daughter of Christian and Christina "Sampson" Meyer.
OBITUARY
It again becomes our duty to chronicle the death of one who
has been near and dear to many in this community, and who succumbed to the
terrible disease of typhoid fever, after a brave struggle of several weeks.
The end came last Saturday night, at Leeds, North Dakota, and the sad
message was sent to relatives here.
Only the night before she had rallied and the word that
thee was new hope of her recovery was joyfully received, but it was only to
be followed by another: that life was no more.
This sudden demise of the two sisters in one week is a
severe shock to the family and friends and the sympathy of the community
is with them in their bereavement and sure affliction.
May Meyer, the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Meyer
was born in Nevada township May 15, 1887 and was reared in this community.
For several years she was an attendant of the Lyle school and later at the
Southern Minnesota Normal College at Austin. She was of a kind disposition
and during her school days made many friends who will ever cherish her
memory. Last spring she went to North Dakota where she was engaged in
school teaching near Leeds making her home with her sister Mrs. Leverson.
All went well until the dread disease entered their happy home about a
month ago.
Her sister, Mrs. Leverson was striken the disease first,
but Miss May was able to enjoy good health only a week more before she too
was a victim.
Their parents here were called to their bedside, but
all that they could do and all that medical skill could do was unable
to check the disease, and after an illness of 17 days the end came.
The remains were brought to Lyle by the parents, Tuesday noon, and were
laid to rest in the Six Mile Grove Cemetery, Thursday afternoon.
The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Dieterichson
of Lyle and Rev. Waldeland, of St. Ansgar.

Charles “Chuck” Wilson 1922-2020
This obituary was written by Charles Wilson himself in 2019.
Charles “Chuck” Wilson was born on May 21, 1922, in San Antonio,
Texas, the eldest son of George and Marjorie (Lewis) Wilson. The
family moved to Austin, Minnesota, in 1924 when George bought a
one-half interest in The Austin Bottling Works.
Chuck attended Austin
Public School, where he played on the tennis team in high school. He
then attended the Colorado School of Mines, where he played varsity
basketball for three years. After graduating with a degree in
geological engineering, he worked for oil companies as a geologist in
Mississippi, Western Wyoming and South-Central Texas.
In 1945, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served under the
base engineer of the Atsugi Air Base in Japan. In March 1947, Chuck
married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Valentine, and joined his
father and brother working in the Austin Coca-Cola Bottling Company.
After their father’s death in 1956, Chuck and his brother Jim jointly
took over operating the business.
In 1957, they purchased the Rochester, Minnesota, Coca-Cola Bottling
Company. Given Rochester’s population growth, the acquisition proved
to be a very good move. Jim retired in 1982 and Chuck bought out his
interest in the business. In 1986, Chuck and four other Coke bottlers
bought the Pine City, Minnesota, and Rice Lake, Minnesota, Coca-Cola
Bottling companies and joined their franchise areas to form the St.
Croix, Minnesota, Coca-Cola Bottling Company.
A number of years later, one of the partners bought out Chuck and the
other three. In 1947, when Chuck joined the family Coca-Cola Company,
there were about 1,200 independent Coca-Cola franchises in the country
— mostly family-owned. When he sold his company in 2002, because of
consolidations, there were only about 70 left. Chuck would tell people
that he had one of the 70 biggest Coke bottlers in the country, and
then he would confess that there were only 70.
He always credited whatever success the business had — it was because
of the really good people he employed. Many of them remained his good
friends for years after the business was sold. Chuck was appointed by
the Mower County Board to represent the county as one of the original
five managers of the Turtle Creek Watershed District, where he was the
treasurer for many years. He also served as president of the Chamber
of Commerce, the Development of Austin Corporation and the Rotary
Club.
He was on the Board of Directors of The U.S. Bank Austin and the Board
of Sterling State Bank. Chuck loved playing basketball and tennis. He
played basketball in the City League and then at the YMCA until he was
68 and tennis for another 10 years. He won several city doubles
titles, which he always said were because of his partner, Dr. Fred
Albert. Chuck was given the lifetime achievement award by the Chamber
of Commerce and the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the Austin High
School Alumni Group. All in all, Chuck always felt he had a wonderful
life, and he knew the smartest thing he ever did was to marry Wanda.
Chuck is survived by his four children, Mark and wife Nancy Wilson, of
Edina, Minnesota, and Telluride, Colorado, Scott of Billings, Montana,
Zachary of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Jean Wilson Kane and husband
Tom of Deephaven, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
A memorial service and celebration of Chuck’s life will be held at a
date to be announced. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Austin.
Arrangements are by Mayer Funeral Home. Condolences may be left online
at www.mayerfh.com.

Evan Lewis Kersten 1988-2020
November 14, 1988 - April 8, 2020 (age 31)
Obituary--
Evan Lewis Kersten, age 31 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 8, 2020.
Evan was born November 14, 1988 in Kenyon, Minnesota, to David and Rebecca (Miller) Kersten. At age 5, his family bought a home near Rose Creek, Minnesota. In 2006, at the age of 18, Evan moved to a mobile home in Austin. In May of 2019 he purchased a large two story home in a Austin family neighborhood. Evan attended Southland Schools and then went on to take a Minnesota Department of Health Training Course for certification as an asbestos inspector and as an asbestos site supervisor.
Evan worked for K-Mart for 7 years starting as a part-time sales associate, and then got promoted to a full-time department manager. He worked there until the Austin store had closed. Evan then began his career working for Pepsi, starting as a part-time merchandiser and then was promoted to a full-time merchandiser. He was currently interviewing for jobs as a Pepsi sales rep, looking to move up again.
Evan also worked for his father David’s inspection business, Enviro Tech Services of Austin, while holding his full-time jobs. He used his asbestos inspector certification to work part-time alongside his dad for more than 10 years. The business languished after his dad’s passing, but in recent months, Evan had renewed his asbestos license and was ready to get the business officially restarted. Evan enjoyed working on cars and restoring or modifying them. Among his favorites were G-body cars like the Monte Carlo. He also loved luxury cars like Lincolns and Cadillacs. Evan always had a special love for Trans-Am cars. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his son, David Kersten and David’s mother, Riley Nagy of Rockford, IA; fiancée, Samantha “Sam” Rollie and her daughter, Lyla Koch of Austin, MN; brother, Brian Kersten of Rosemount, MN; sister, Cheryl Goddard of Apache Junction, AZ; and his aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, David Kersten; mother, Rebecca Kersten; uncle, Robert Miller; aunt, Amy Ehrich; grandparents, Beatrice and Calvin Kersten, Susan Miller, George Miller.
