Carmen Marion Anderson 1926-2020
Our deeply beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather
Carmen Marion Anderson passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2020, in Eau
Claire, Wisconsin at the age of 93.
Carmen was born on Oct. 30, 1926, in Newry Township, outside of
Austin, Minnesota. He worked at Hormel, served in the U.S. Army and
attended Kilgore College in Texas for a draftsman degree. He returned
to the family farm in Corning, Minnesota, to pursue farming and raise
his own family.
He received his law degree from the University of Texas in Austin
in 1971 and practiced business law for 31 years in Houston, Texas. On
May 28, 1975, he married Grace Ann Lewis. They raised two sons, Nick
and Joel, and two daughters, Alice and Lisa.
Carmen had a passion for hand milking Jersey cows and hitching a
team of Belgian draft horses. He enjoyed singing, especially his
favorite song, “Red River Valley,” playing his guitar and records. His
passions included fishing, poetry, canning, making caramel, mowing
lawns, auctions and biennial Waverly, Iowa, horse sales. Everyday he
drove his wife to work at Hormel (many times in his favorite red

Sunday at St. Olaf Church, an episode of “The McLaughlin Group,” or
sitting through “The Golden Girls” with his wife.
Carmen was the hardest worker and gave everything, yet was the most
fulfilled and satisfied gentleman. He lived a very full life right up
until the end, where he was a caretaker for his wife and a babysitter
to his three great-grandchildren, who he undoubtedly adored and deeply
cherished. He made a significant contribution taking on the role of a
father to the upbringing of his two grandchildren. Carmen was best

Marlyn Arlene Sayles 1929-2020
November 03, 1929 - March 18, 2020
MARLYN'S OBITUARY
Marlyn A. Sayles, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away at her residence in Apple Valley, Minnesota on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 of age-related issues.
She was born to Carl Johan and Myrtle (Vickerman) Johnson on Nov 3, 1929 in Amherst Township, Fillmore County, MN, one of six children. She was proud to say she was born “in the Big Woods of Fillmore County.” She spent her childhood in Amherst and later Newburg, MN. She moved as a teenager to Austin, MN, where she worked a variety of jobs, including that of being a nanny, in a dry cleaning shop and the cosmetic department of the old Woolworth’s Store on Main Street. Her last job before marriage was with the J.C. Hormel Company as a mail clerk, which she greatly enjoyed. She met and kept life-long friends from these early days.
She attended weekend dances at the Oasis Club south of Austin, where she met the love of her life, Wilbur Sayles, the ‘Singer in the Band.’ They were married April 11, 1949 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and lived thereafter south of Austin in the Enterprise Community. She attended all community events, including neighborhood clubs, projects and cemetery association meetings.
Marlyn and Wilbur owned and operated the Accordion Shop for many years. Later she joined her husband traveling throughout the U.S. while he presented Lay Music Missions. She loved music and singing, and was an accomplished yodeler. She knew the words to hundreds of songs by memory. Marlyn and Wilbur enjoyed 62 years of married life together.
She was a homemaker in the fullest sense of the word. A child of the Great Depression, she saved every scrap, article and paper “in case we needed it someday.” She was a good cook and baker, known for her bread, cinnamon rolls, peanut brittle, jams and jellies and pickles. She worked for many years in the church basement kitchen, helping to serve innumerable dinners, weddings and funerals. Her church was very important to her and she served on her WSCS Circle and at the communion altar for many years.
Marlyn was a gifted seamstress and sewed for family and others throughout her life. She tailor-made suits, wedding dresses, formals, and did assorted mending for others. She took an extension class in upholstery and sewed projects for various clients. She served as the Sewing Leader for the Enterprise 4H Club for many years and taught many young girls in the community to sew and tailor clothing.
Gardening and Nature were her special loves. She could name every flower. She could identify every bird by its song and flight. Her gardens were beautiful and extraordinary, and she loved being outside whenever possible. Her indoor plants were truly amazing. She was a member of the Austin Hoe and Grow Garden Club and Austin Violet Club for many years. She created a special garden while living at the Cedars Residence in Austin, MN.
Due to health issues, she moved to Apple Valley Ecumen Centennial House to be close to her immediate family. She entered into community life there with the same exuberance she did everything. She made many new friends there, always introducing herself as “Marlyn… Marilyn-without-the-i!” The family is humbly grateful to the Ecumen Staff and Blue Stone Hospice for their kind and excellent care during her recent illnesses.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Sayles; her parents, brother (Irvin Johnson) and sister (Pernella Helgeson).
Marlyn is survived by her three sisters: Dorothy Johnson (Loveland, CO), Janice Wheeler (Marion, NC) and Carol Skadsem (Mesa, AZ and Rochester, MN); two daughters, Sharon (Darrell) Babcock of Rosemount, MN and Beverly Magoon (Boone, CO), two grandsons: Brent Babcock (Rosemount, MN) and Ross Babcock (Eagan, MN) and three great-granddaughters: Avery Babcock, Rowan Babcock and Paige Babcock. Also surviving her are many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and several grandnieces and nephews. She deeply loved and treasured her family.
Marlyn loved her church and her friends beyond measure. If you were lucky enough to be a friend of Marlyn, you were lucky enough! She will be greatly missed.
Funeral services are pending with Clasen-Jordan Mortuary, and will be announced at a later date. Any memorials may be directed to the First United Church in Austin, MN.

Lowell James Hyland 1934-2020
Lowell James Hyland, M.D., 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by
family on Sunday, March 22, 2020, following a battle with cancer.
Lowell was humbly born at home on Nov. 3, 1934, in rural Austin,
Minnesota, during a blizzard that prevented the doctor from assisting
with his arrival. He spent his formative years growing up in rural
Minnesota, where he learned both the value of hard work and the
importance of family. After initially attending school in a one-room
schoolhouse (where he devoured every book in the library), Lowell
graduated from Austin High School in 1952. His sharp mind saw him
serving two years in the U.S. Army as a cryptographer stationed in
Japan during the Korean War.
Upon his return, he attended the University of Minnesota and met his
future wife, Norma Nordland. They were married on Sept. 7, 1957.
Lowell graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in
1962. He interned in Orange County, California, completing his
residency at Colorado General and a fellowship in allergy at National
Jewish Hospital in Denver, Colorado. His early professional years also
saw the arrival of their three children, Becky, Jill and Jim. He
practiced in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from 1973 until retiring in
2002. Throughout his career, Lowell held many academic and medical
positions, including chief of staff at McKennan Hospital and multiple
offices in the South Dakota Medical Association. Lowell loved being a
physician and cared deeply for his patients and his entire office
team. Many of his patients credit him with saving their lives. Lowell
also had an interest in business, working with his brother, Duane, to
start up Micomp Data Systems, a computer-based medical billing system,
in the late 1970s. Following his retirement from medicine, Lowell
became involved with DocuTAP providing medical insights and serving on
their Board of Directors as well as pursuing an avid interest in
investing. He never was able to prove his theory that “butter builds
brains,” although his family has fully embraced it.
Despite the demands of being a doctor and businessman, Lowell always
found time for his family, who especially remember road trips all over
the U.S., family vacations, hunting adventures and weekends at the
lake. Ever “on the go,” he stayed busy spending summers at the lake,
where he loved time with the grandkids, going on pontoon rides and
participating in the annual Fourth of July road race. Fall was spent
at the ranch where he loved hunting, more time with family and
friends, driving the tractor and planting trees. Throughout the year,
you could always find him attending his grandchildren’s activities. A
generous man, he is notorious for only tipping 10 percent because
“that’s what God gets.” Forever curious, he spent countless hours
reading and sharing his love of knowledge with those around him.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Emma; sister;
Darlene Earl; and brothers, Loren and Robert. He is survived by his
wife, Norma; daughters, Becky (Dennis) and Jill (Larry); son, Jim
(Joan); grandchildren, Maria, Lauren, Katelyn, Sarah, Anna, Abby and
Jacob; great-grandson, Henry; brother, Duane; sisters, Shirley (Bill)
and Diana (Jim); and many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to Avera McKennan, Prairie Center and Avera Hospice,
especially Dr. Ben Solomon, for their personal, devoted care, and the
physicians and staff at Mayo Clinic, especially Dr. Andy Maijka, for
their excellent and compassionate care. Thanks to Pastor Tim Lemme for
his devout guidance.
Because of troubling times, Lowell will have a small family gathering
at this time. A celebration of life will be held this summer. We
encourage you to share your story of Lowell at millerfh.com or
GatheringUs.com to help us with his passing. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that memorials be directed to the Special Olympics
South Dakota or to the South Dakota School of Medicine. For obituary
and online registry please visit www.millerfh.com.
