Jean's Obituary

Jean M. Noel, 93 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Friday, November 29, 2019, at St. Mark’s Memory Care in Austin.

Jean was born June 8, 1926, on the family farm in Clinton Falls Township, north of Owatonna Minnesota. She had an active childhood, busy with farm and household chores, 4-H projects, school activities and music lessons. As a youth, she started keeping a daily journal, which she continued throughout her life, with the final entry being made last year. In the last few years of her life, her children enjoyed reading the journals to her, and having her add details about the people, places and events about which she had written.

After graduating from Owatonna High School in 1944, she attended St. Olaf College, where she met her future husband Dewey Noel. Jean graduated from St. Olaf College in 1948 with departmental honors in mathematics. Shortly thereafter, Jean and Dewey were married and moved to St. Paul, where Dewey completed his college education at the University of Minnesota.

They then moved to Austin, Minnesota, where they raised their two children, Janice and John. Jean was a wonderful home-maker and active in the Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and making and collecting Christmas decorations, many of which, of course, had “Noël” on them. She worked part-time at the YMCA for several years. After living a few years in Hutchinson, Minnesota, Dewey retired and they returned to Austin.

Together Jean and Dewey continued to be active in the Methodist Church, delivered Meals-on-Wheels, and traveled around the country participating in Elderhostel programs. After Dewey passed away in 2015, Jean became a resident of St. Mark’s, first in the assisted living unit and then for her final 20 months in memory care.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Noel; parents, Walter and Emma (Bartenbach) Schafer; mother-in-law, Jennie (Dahle) Noel; brother, Lawrence Schafer, and brothers-in-law, Glen Noel Jr. and Stanley Noel.

Terry Clayton Barnett

1949-2019

May 19, 1949 - November 30, 2019

Terry C. Barnett, 70 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Saturday, November 30, 2019, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.

Terry was born on May 19, 1949 in Austin, Minnesota to Clayton (Spike) and Sylvia (Hall) Barnett. He graduated from Austin High School in 1967 and later attended Mankato State, graduating in 1971. Following graduation from Mankato State and earning his Master’s Degree in Education, Terry moved to Tempe, Arizona to pursue a career in teaching, and raised two children. In 2002 Terry moved back to Austin to be closer to his father and friends. He became a substitute teacher in the Austin Public Schools, and later married his second wife, Dianne.

He is survived by his wife, Dianne Barnett - Austin MN; son, Tyler (Laura) Barnett - Tempe AZ; daughter, Tatum (Stefan) Lehner - Monrovia, CA; grandchildren, Kolbe, Asher, and Francesca Barnett, Garrett and Tayler Lehner; sisters, Coleen (Mark) Altnow - Apple Valley, MN, Priscilla Armstrong - Shakopee, MN; Dianne’s children, Emily (Chris) McKeever - Waconia, MN and Erinn Becker - Minneapolis, MN; Dianne’s grandchildren, Oliver, Charlotte and Edward McKeever, Charlie, Eleanor, and Jane Becker; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Sylvia and father Spike.

Terry had the unique ability to light up a room and do it using minimal words. He loved the simple things in life and was content wherever he was. He filled his days golfing, hiking, biking, watching sports, doing yard work, traveling and playing with his grandchildren. He loved planning spring and fall golf trips with his golfing buddies, making sure everyone was on a team and had a ride. He was lovingly known for grilling delicious steaks for all the guys while there. He enjoyed his 10:30 golf games at Meadow Greens and the Monday traveling games. He and Dianne spent the last few winters in California and were planning on leaving for another one in just a week. His love for those activities, however, paled in comparison to the love he had for his wife, his children, his grandchildren (who knew him as “Bakka”) and his friends. He would give the shirt off his back for the people he cared about - and do it with a smile (and perhaps some friendly teasing). It was this complete and utter unselfishness that will leave the biggest void in the lives of all who knew him; a void that will not be filled. Simply put, Terry will be dearly missed by family and friends alike.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 5th at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with the Reverend Mark Niethammer officiating.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary, and will continue on Thursday morning for one hour prior to services, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred.
