Kenneth Eugene Overocker

1925-2019

April 06, 1925 - October 25, 2019

Kenneth Eugene Overocker, 94, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away at his home on Friday October 25, 2019, with his daughter Connie at his side.

Kenny was born April 6, 1925, in Hayti, South Dakota to William and Anna (Reppe) Overocker. He was the third of seven children. After moving to Minnesota, he met and married the love of his life, Ceta Durben, on June 18, 1949. During their 70 year marriage, they built three new homes and raised an active family of five.

Kenny enlisted in the Army and proudly served his country during World War II. On May 15, 2010 he had the privilege of participating in one of the many Honor flights transporting World War II vets to Washington, DC. Upon arrival they toured the new WWII monument that had just been opened to the public. All but a few of the veterans on the fight were in wheelchairs and even though Kenny was in his 80’s he volunteered to assist with transport for one of his fellow comrades. He was so excited and honored to be part of the group.

His career spanned 37 years working at Hormel; he worked in several departments throughout the plant prior to his retirement. In his spare time, he loved hunting and fishing. In addition, he always loved finding a good deal, whether it was at a garage sale or on his favorite radio program, Time to Trade. As often as possible he enjoyed traveling to the Preston area to purchase produce, flowers, and other great finds from numerous Amish families that he and Ceta had met over the years. One of Kenny’s greatest gifts was the ability to figure out how to fix anything.

He was always ready and willing to not only fix anything around the house, but would help anyone in need. He and Ceta loved big band music and dancing the night away well into their eighties. He swears it is what kept them young. He lived life to the fullest and was kind, warm hearted and always had a sparkle in his eye. But his greatest joy was sitting on the back porch with Ceta overlooking the beautiful backyard and garden they had created together.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ceta; his parents; and siblings, Jeanette, Gene, Arlene, Warren and Dianne.

Kenny is survived by his children, Connie (Roger) Bass, Minneapolis, Patricia Buck, Minneapolis, Randy (Luan) Overocker, Austin, LuAnn Heald, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Diane (Peter) King, Greensboro, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Tom (Justine) Bass, Sarah Srsen, Paul (Erin) Overocker, Lauren (Chris) Molden, Kate (Sam) Moore; seven great grandchildren, Brody, Kade, Kale, Tayylor, Olivia, Carson and Cooper; sister, Judy Boyenga; nieces and nephews.

A memorial gathering will be held on Tuesday, November 5th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Clasen Jordan Mortuary. Interment with military honors will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston.

Audrey (Erickson, Larson) Plunkett

1927-2019

July 13, 1927 - November 01, 2019

Audrey's Obituary--

Audrey Plunkett, 92, passed away peacefully on November 1st, 2019 in Austin, Minnesota where she lived most of her life.

Audrey was born July 13, 1927, in Detroit, Michigan to Leonard and Gladys Erickson. She attended Austin High School and the University of Minnesota. After graduating she taught school for two years in Montana before returning to Austin. Soon she met and married the love of her life, Ernest Larson, a Fremont Nebraska native who was a rising financial executive at the Hormel Company. Together they had four children, Kristine, Eric, Kathryn and Evan.

Life took a tragic turn in 1964 when Ernie died at 41 from colon cancer, leaving Audrey with four kids under the age of 10. She responded with incredible strength, consoling others and exhibiting a level of independence, determination and will that would define her as a person. She married Warren Plunkett with whom she had her fifth child, Gail. During her life Audrey extolled hard work and frugality, seeing all of her kids through college with her financial support. She never put herself first and always displayed her Norwegian strength and resolve. She was known to say things are never as bad, or as good, as they appear.

Audrey will be remembered by those who knew her well as someone who loved her family, her many great friends, and her organizations: PEO, Collectors Club and League of Women Voters. But her passions defined her, notably watching every Twins game she could from first pitch to last out regardless of the score, and for her unwavering commitment to the Reagan Republicans. She had an incredible ability to process information and used it to develop informed opinions of politics and the economy that always made her fun to talk to. She loved nothing more than to have a glass of wine and just talk. And she listened. She consistently amazed us with her recall and i nquisitiveness about events in our lives and our friends, including things we had discussed months and even years ago. While her body slowly wore out, her mind stayed sharp until nearly the end.

Audrey was preceded in death by parents Leonard and Gladys, brother Dean, husband Ernie and granddaughter Sarah. She is survived by her five children, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, her brother Wallace, and some very classy friends who continued to display great efforts to stay in her life as her mobility declined. Pat and Tom Purcell, Barbara Meany and Donna Robbins deserve special mention in that regard. Heaven has a special place for people like you. We also thank Peggy of Seniors Helping Seniors for her compassionate care in Mom’s last year.

We will miss our Mother and Grandma Audrey. She answered the bell in life and showed us what she thought was important. Thanks Mom. You were amazing.

A private memorial service will be held to celebrate Audrey’s life. Memorials may be made in her name to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or the Minnesota Twins Community Fund.

Richard Myron "Rick" Herreid

1951-2019

November 21, 1951 - November 1, 2019 (age 67)

Richard Myron “Rick” Herreid, 67, of Austin, Minnesota, died surrounded by family on November 1, 2019, four days after sustaining a heart attack.

Rick was born in Pittsburgh on November 21, 1951. He grew up in Roseville, Minnesota, spending summers on the St. Croix River. A starting player on the Alexander Ramsey High School basketball team, he still revered the coach who led the team to the state tournament.

He attended St. Olaf College, where he met his beloved wife, Karen. One of his favorite memories was playing a pickup game of football in deep snow with his friends in college. For the rest of his life he enjoyed trout fishing the streams of the Driftless Area and duck hunting on the Mississippi River with one of those college friends.

In 1976 he earned a master’s degree in organic chemistry from the UW–Madison and began working for Hormel R&D. He became Director of Applied Research at Hormel, where several patents include his name. He demonstrated strong loyalty to the company and respect for his colleagues.

After retiring from Hormel in 2011, Rick continued to be active and inquisitive. One of his first retirement adventures was sailing around Cape Horn. For the past three winters he captained sailing trips in the Caribbean for his siblings. He planned memorable trips for family and friends, including to the Boundary Waters, WWI battlefields of France (retracing his grandfather’s footsteps), and ancestral homesteads in Norway. As a trip guide abroad, he included just the right mix of educational programming, hiking, good food, and alone time.

Very active in the Austin community, Rick cooked for church dinners and at the St. Olaf Church booth during the Mower County fair. He was a key volunteer for the Science Fair Mentoring Project.

For over three decades, Rick was a member of a very special book club, which he said pushed him to read difficult books that he might not have attempted otherwise. He enjoyed the discussions and admired the intellect of his fellow readers.

Rick was a loving and supportive brother, husband, and father, always making time and being there for his family. He traveled around the country to cheer on his marathon-running daughter. He fixed up the older home that his younger daughter and son-in-law bought in Minneapolis. She grew closer to him as he cared for their children and showed them how to do things around the house, calling to say, “Hi, it’s your contractor.” Similarly, he helped his son and daughter-in-law when their son was born, and he and Karen often traveled to Madison to visit them. Rick was thrilled to become a grandfather and was very active in his grandchildrens’ lives. It is sad to think that he will not be here to teach his grandchildren how to fish.

A man of great integrity, Rick exhibited Christian humility and brought the family together with love (and food). He set an example that will have an enduring impact on those who knew him.

Rick was preceded in death by his mother Joan, and father Richard. He is survived by his wife Karen; brother David (Daphne); sister Susan; son Peter (Alyson); daughters Anne and Kristin (Cole); and grandchildren Wes, Lars, and Anja.

Visitations will be held on Friday, November 8, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, MN, and for an hour before the funeral service, which will be held on Saturday, November 9, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Olaf Church in Austin, MN. The burial will be private in Afton, MN. Memorials are preferred to The Carter Center or the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Endowment Fund. After graduation, she married Norman Harold Hollerud of Lyle, Minnesota on June 24th, 1945, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. They were blessed with 6 children; Sandy, Dennis, Diana, Lana, Cindy and John. After her last child went to kindergarten, Marjorie worked at St. Olaf Hospital for many years, first in housekeeping, then as a nurse aid. In 1986, her husband, Norman, died suddenly on January 2.

Mark was born May 16, 1960 in Austin to Joseph and Mary Ann (Krokos) Burzinski. He graduated from Austin High School in 1980 and later worked at Cedar Valley for 39 years until an injury forced him into rehabilitation in Rochester in Autumn of 2018.

Mark’s parents were his primary caregivers for 44 years. He moved into Prairie Sky Apartments in 2004 until health complications forced him into a skilled care facility at Rochester West.

Our family is immeasurably appreciative of the countless caregivers from the public schools, Cedar Valley, Prairie Sky, and Rochester West. They all met his physical needs, but most of all they listened and showed him love and compassion and became his extended family.

Janece "Bunny" (Fruetel) Simerson

1935-2019

August 19, 1935 - November 20, 2019

Janece Elorine (“Bunny”) Simerson, age 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 20, 2019.

She was born in Winona, Minnesota, on August 19, 1935, as Ethel Janice Fruetel to Sheldon and Esther Fruetel. Esther passed away and Sheldon, a traveling salesman, asked his dear friends, Harry and Amelia Eaton, to take her as their own. Ethel Janice Fruetel became Janece Elorine Eaton. She was raised with an enormous amount of love by her new parents, her older brothers, sister, their spouses and families.

Bunny was smart and funny – terrible in math but great in debate and forensics. She attended Menasha High School, was the only freshman there to qualify for the state forensics/debate tournament, and loved life.

Bunny left home to attend Wartburg College and Deaconess Nursing School, then returned to work in the local hospital where she became charge nurse on her floor. There, she met a young med school student named Tom Simerson.

The two dated, married, and moved with Tom’s school and job requirements. They lived in a garage apartment in Milwaukee and Bunny worked at the V.A. hospital to put Tom through med school at Marquette University. There, their daughter Lisa was born. Bunny loved those years.

They moved to Maine while Tom was in the Army, where their daughter, Diane, was born. When they returned to Wisconsin, they settled in Elm Grove and had their son, David.

They were divorced thereafter but remained close; Bunny raised the kids. She returned to work as an R.N. She also returned to faith, and she’d always say that it was God who raised her children. She had them at church every time the doors were open, grounded them in faith, prayed constantly, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, volunteered at prison and telephone prayer ministries, and became a youth group leader where she served until she was 78 years old and moved to Austin, Minnesota.

Bunny was fiercely strong in her faith, in prayer, in her love for her family, and in her determination to raise them well. She was “Grandma Bunny” to her grandchildren Rebekah, Samuel, Caleb, and Elisha Simerson, Grace Peterson, Lacey Peterson Ogden, and every child she met, and loved by daughter-and-son-in-laws Sarah Simerson and Scott Peterson. Her love and prayers shaped our lives, and she often said that she may not have anything in this world, but she was blessed because all her children and grandchildren serve the Lord.

In Bunny’s final words, she woke briefly and spoke this simple truth: “I’m deeply loved by God!” Rest in Glory, Bunny Simerson. You have received your reward.

Services will be held at Cornerstone Church in Austin at 11:00 am on Monday, November 25, with visitation also at the church on Sunday from 5-7 pm and Monday at 10 am. Dear friend, Pastor David Ruud, will officiate; Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be sent directly to Wounded Warriors. Thank you to The Cedars and St. Mary’s Hospital for providing wonderful care.
