Michael Steven Miller 1985-2019
November 15, 1985 - July 23, 2019
Michael (Mike) Steven Miller, age 33, was born on November 15, 1985,
to Dawn (Tollison) Miller and Richard Miller. He died very unexpectedly
at his home in Austin, Minnesota on July 23, 2019.
Mike was a good man and even better friend. He was the first to say
“sure, I can help” or “yes, I’ll be there”, when someone needed help, or
when a family gathering was happening. He had a smile that was infectious,
loved making goofy faces in photos, making everyone laugh and gave hugs
that were great. He was a gentle, kind person with a big heart.
He enjoyed playing, making and collecting guitars, making knives,
making music and going to concerts, going to the Big Island Rendezvous,
bonfires and BBQ in his yard with friends, getting together with family,
seeing new places, anime cartoons, fishing, walking at the Nature Center,
his pets, most anything outdoors, and trucking.
Mike would often write during his down time when he was an over-the-road
trucker. Poems, thoughts, questions, he would write them down and share
them with his family and friends.
TRUCK DRIVER
By Mike Miller, April 3, 2010
I see the world from behind this glass,
I see the world while I sit on my ass.
North, South, East and West,
I drive down the road, and I do my best.
I’ve seen a lot with all my time,
But nothing at all, that I can call mine.
From the Rocky Mountains, to the Ports of Jersey,
Some places I drive through, I do in a hurry.
The weather it can turn, ugly real quick,
As the snow starts to fly and pile up so thick.
A mile at a time, I drive it alone,
Nothing but the back of a truck, I call home.
The lonely life of a professional driver,
Don’t worry my friend, for I’m a survivor.
So love me and cherish me while I’m around,
For tomorrow my friend, on the road I’ll be found.
Mike is survived by is mother, Dawn Tollison and (step) dad, Jim
Peterson; sister, Miriam (Syed) Uddin; nephews, Aladin, Rasheed, Sakina,
Aydin, Faizin, and Azan Uddin and Yassine El Defrawy; grandparents, Jerry
and Luella Peterson; uncles, Dan (Tamara) Peterson and Kent Miller; aunts,
Pam Labitz, Diane (Terry) Robinson and Annette (Fred Ideker) Peterson;
cousins, David Peterson, James Neidecker Jr., Sabrina Neidecker, Elijah
Robinson, and Tara Robinson. He was a favorite adult cousin to Josh,
Lillian, Jeremiah, James III, Maximus, Athena and Leo (children of his
cousins).
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Richard Miller; grandparents,
Donald and Lorraine Miller; infant brother, Christopher Miller; grandmother,
Catherine Tollison; great grandparents, Paul and Gertrude Kline, and Fred
and Bernice Peterson.
A Celebration of Life Gathering is being planned for a later date,
and will be announced at that time. In lieu of flowers, memorials are
preferred in Michael’s memory. He had a soft spot in his heart for the
Mower County Humane Society. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is assisting the

the Southern Minnesota Men’s Touch Football League. Golf continued to be a
passion throughout his life.
Gary worked for Hormel, the Austin Packaging Company and was also a
part-time fire fighter for the Austin Fire Department. Gary fulfilled
his lifelong dream of owning the Tendermaid with his wife Sara for the
past 22 years.
A pivotal part of Gary’s life was when he was diagnosed with idiopathic
pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in 2006. Gary was given a grim prognosis but he
continued to be the optimist that he always was and never gave up hope.
Gary was put on the donor list for a lung transplant through the University
of Minnesota and in January 2009, he received a transplant. With his
competitive and positive attitude, he excelled in his recovery, was
nicknamed “the Rock Star”, and was out of the hospital after just ten
days. He never forgot how lucky and blessed he was to receive a lung, a
second chance at life, and to have his freedom back. He continued to
encourage others needing transplants and was a volunteer for Life Source.
Over the years, Gary endured many health challenges, but he remained
positive and his passion for life and the love for his wife and family
gave him every reason to fight.
He enjoyed taking trips up north to his family cabin and he cherished
spending time with his children and grandchildren. Gary was a consummate
people-person who was friend to all; he always made people feel special,
never judging and was a loyal neighbor and friend. He loved his community,
his neighbors, friends, and most of all, his family.
He was preceded in death by his mom, Barb White and his in-laws, Don
and Chum Sandeen.
