Kathleen Josephine "Kitty" Garry, 80, died peacefully on July 9, 2019,
at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin, Minn., surrounded by family.
She was born on Jan. 15, 1939 in Belle Plaine, Minn., to Mark and Dorothy
Murphy and attended a country school near the family farm through elementary
school. She went on to graduate from Belle Plaine High School in 1956 and
Mankato State College with a major in physical education and minor in math
in 1959.
She took her first teaching job in Madelia, Minn., the following fall.
On Oct. 28, 1961, she married Michael Leo Garry of Delavan, Minn., and they
taught school together in Carroll, Iowa, for one year while also starting
a family.
The rapidly increasing Garry family made stops in Marion, Iowa, and
Northfield, Minn., before settling in Austin in 1968. Together the pair
had eight children. Shortly after their youngest was born Kitty went back
to work, teaching physical education at Queen of Angels beginning in 1974.
She remained a much-loved gym teacher in the Austin Catholic School
System for 39 years, retiring in 2013. While working and raising a large
family, she also found time to enthusiastically volunteer for countless
Queen of Angels and Austin Catholic school activities and events over the
years. This is in addition to helping her children with their paper routes
and math problems and her husband in the print shop the couple operated out
of the basement of their home.
She enjoyed the challenge of cooking for big groups and looked forward
to the holidays with the children and grandchildren coming to town. Her
egg bakes after Mass remain unsurpassed within the family.
Kitty was a huge fan of her family's involvement in athletics, something
that continued on with her passionate support of her grandchildren and their
activities over the years. She remained the area's No. 1 fan of the Minnesota
Twins -- and a huge fan of baseball and softball in general -- to her last
days.
She is survived by Mike, her beloved husband of 58 years; her children

Garry (Jeanne) of Plymouth, Minn., John Garry (Sally) of Austin, Minn.,

time he held positions as Industrial Engineer & Safety Director and
Purchasing Manager. Ken and Signe lived in Fort Dodge for 23 years and
raised their family, Fred, Becky, and Phil, there.
In 1977 he and his family moved back to Austin, MN, where he continued
his career with Hormel Foods as the Corporate Manager of Safety and Security
until his retirement in 1993. Ken and Sig enjoyed their summers at their
Leech Lake home for many years. They also enjoyed part of their winters
at South Padre Island, Texas.
Ken and Sig were active members of churches wherever they lived. In
Ft. Dodge, Ken was active in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, serving many
offices, including Chairman of the Building Committee when they built their
new church and Choir Director for over 20 years. In Austin, Ken served on
various boards and sang in the choir at St. John’s Lutheran Church. They
were also Associate Members of Immannuel Lutheran Church of Walker, MN,
during many summers after retirement.

Playing with the Fort Dodge Municipal Karl King Band for 20 years was a
passion and joy for Ken. He served as the band’s secretary-treasurer for
most of those years. The band performed concerts year-round, but the
schedule was heaviest in the summer. Every Sunday evening, Signe and the
kids would head to the bandshell at Oleson Park and to the City Square
on Thursday evening to listen to the free concerts performed by the band.
After moving to Austin, he served on the Austin Symphony Board of Directors
where he held various offices, including President.
Ken took safety at the Hormel plant seriously. He was involved with the
North Central Engineers Club and the Industrial Safety Association of Iowa
which later became the Iowa Safety Council and served as President of both
organizations. After moving back to Austin, he served on the Board of
Directors of the Minnesota Safety Council, as Chairman of the Meat and
Leather Industries of the National Safety Council, and on the American
Meat Institute Safety Committee.

Barbara Etta (Petersen) Lewison 1936-2019
January 28, 1936 - July 26, 2019
Barbara E. Lewison, 83 of Adams, Minnesota, passed away Friday,
July 26, 2019, surrounded by her family at Adams Health Care Center.
Barbara Etta was born in Red Wing, Minnesota in 1936 to Verlie and Lucille
Petersen. In 1952 she married Eugene (Brother) David Lewison and they
resided together in Adams, Minnesota until he passed away in 1991. She
continued to reside in their home in Adams for several years and then
moved to Austin twice for a short time, only to return to her roots in
Adams for the majority of her retired life.
Barbie was a very gifted and creative lady, and was known in Adams as
one of the best cooks/bakers, cake decorators, seamstresses and knitters
around. She made and sold various craft items throughout her life and
decorated many novelty cakes for the locals and surrounding communities,
as well as many wedding and graduation cakes. She was known around the
Adam's Community as the scariest and most wicked witch on Halloween,
greeting and frightening children that came to her door.
Barbie worked at LPC in Leroy for many years until it closed and then
was a "favorite" cook at the Adams Group Home, known for her home-cooked
meals. Upon that closing, her last job before she retired was in the laundry
department at the Adams Health Care Center. After retirement, she continued
to decorate cakes until her husband became ill in 1990, as he was a good
helper to her in transporting her cakes.
Barbie had a full and joyous life and had a deep faith. She loved
collecting Angel statues and pins and had over 200 of them. Every morning
she would put one of her many Angel pins on her lapel to guide and protect
her throughout her day. She would often talk to her Angels and ask them for
guidance when she would struggle with something in her daily life.
Barbie stayed very active and enjoyed cooking for, and visiting with her
children and neighbors. She especially enjoyed going places and shopping
with her best friend, Marlene Hillson, until her health started to decline a
couple of years ago, making it difficult for her to get around easily. They
continued to talk on the phone daily up until her death.
Barbie embraced death like no other, she was so prepared and smiled
until the end and stayed kind to those around her. She was a true
inspiration that there is a wonderful place we go and was eager to meet
up with her loved ones that had already passed.
Barbara is survived by 9 children, William (Dianne) Leroy, Robert Lewison,
Leroy, Kenneth (Diane) Lewison, Austin, Paul (Jean) Lewison, Adams, Gary
(Annie) Lewison, Rose Creek, Mary Lewison, Austin, James (Patty) Lewison,
Lake City, Sherry (Brian) Shotanus, Adams, Jeff (Julie) Lewison, Rochester;
27 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister Judi (Ronald) Baskett, Reno, NV, many
sister and brother-in-laws, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Verlie and Lucille Petersen,

Jerome Stephen Kehret 1947-2019
November 12, 1947 - July 30, 2019
Jerome Stephen Kehret, 71, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at home
in Norwalk, Iowa.
Jerry was born November 12, 1947, in Austin, Minnesota, son of Carl
Edward Kehret and Mathilda Moltz. He married Carolyn Ann Gust on October
30, 1976, in Charles City, Iowa, and he celebrated the birth of his daughter
Suzy in 1985.
He was a high school and post-high school teacher of electricity,
electronics, mechanics, and small engines. Jerry graduated from Austin
High School in 1965, Austin State Junior College in 1968, private pilot's
license in 1969, B.S. Degree from Mankato State College in 1970, and received
his Master's Degree in Industrial Education in 1976 from Iowa State University,
with a State of Iowa Permanent Professional Teaching Certificate in 1978.
He acquired an Extra Class Amateur Radio Ham license in 1980 and a First
Class FCC Radiotelephone Operator license with Radar Endorsement in 1985.
Jerry was a passionate, brilliant, inventive, hard driving, and
physically strong man with strong convictions and boundless energy. His
love of learning is reflected in his many degrees and certificates, but
most of what he learned was self-taught. With his almost photographic
memory, he was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge on an endless variety
of subjects from farming to woodworking to muscle cars to antique radios
to American history of the 1920’s through 1960’s.
Although he moved to Iowa in 1974, his strong belief in family kept his
heart in Austin. He was proud to be the son of Carl Kehret, owner of
Streverling Dairy and prize winning Guernsey dairy cattle.
No job was too challenging for him to tackle. An avid reader, Jerry
was able to grasp technical manuals and repair anything he wanted or
needed to. He was a mechanic, carpenter, electrician, plumber, woodworker,
snowplow driver, farmer, gardener, chef, bee keeper, and tree farm manager.

John William Schammel 1924-2019
June 4, 1924 - August 1, 2019
Obituary for John William Schammel
John William Schammel passed on August 1, 2019, at Our House Memory Care
in Austin, Minnesota. John had been a resident there for the past three
years.
Born on June 4, 1924, John had attained his 95th birthday in June of
this year. He was the third child born to William John Schammel and Teresa
Mary Schammel at Rose Creek, Minnesota.
John spent all of his working years managing the family farm near Rose
Creek. He had a strong repitoire of skills for harvesting crops, producing
diary and polutry products, hog production, and machinery maintenance. John
never married so he had to perform all his farming tasks alone. The days
were long and strenuous, especially during the growing season, not leaving
much time for travel or recreation.
After many years of hard work, John finally had some time for travel
and fun. With his friend, Margaret Nyrard, he enjoyed a variety of trips
throughout the US. He even learned square dancing. They also spent a good
deal of winter time in Arizona. One thing that John always did, while
farming and during retirement, was to keep a calendar with notes on the
weather, local events, and his activities. His recording of the Minnesota
weather is especially interesting with comments such as: “No sun for days”;
“Too damn cold”; and “Cloudy all day”.
John is survived by four of his sibilings: Veronica Schober of St. Paul,
Minnesota; Madeline Burzinski of Austin, MN; Joe (Irene) Schammel of Rose
Creek, MN; and Kenneth (Marilyn) Schammel of Cornelius (Charlotte), NC.
John was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Clem,
Jerome, and Ralph.
Funeral services will be held at Queen of Angels Church in Austin,
Minnesota, Wednesday, August 7, 2019, at 10:30 am. Before the service,
an urn of John’s remains will be available for prayer and meditation
starting at 9:30 am. Everyone is invited to a luncheon at the church
following the service. Graveside service and burial will be at St. Peter's
Cemetery in Rose Creek, following the luncheon. Donations for masses are
welcome. Condolences maybe left online at www.mayerfh.com
