June 17, 1929 - May 16, 2019

U.S. Veteran

Lawrence Keith Finley, 89, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2019 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in Austin.

Lawrence was born June 17, 1929 in LeRoy, Minnesota to John and Dorris (Engstrom) Finley. He attended grade school in LeRoy and moved with his family to Rose Creek when he was 10. He enlisted in the US Armed Forces during his senior year at Rose Creek High School. He was proud to have been a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

He trained as an aircraft mechanic, and was stationed in Guam when the Korean War broke out. He was transferred to Okinawa to be within striking distance of North Korea. Stationed in Germany from 1956 to 1960, Lawrence met and married Renata Weyrich and their daughter, Donna Marie was born there.

In 1966 his orders took him to Vietnam. The men had to hurry to repair planes after attacks to get them back in the air as fast as possible. He volunteered for a 2nd tour of duty and during that time his base was shelled so often he worried that he may not make it home again. Lawrence was decorated with the Bronze Star for his performance as an aircraft maintenance superintendent in Vietnam. After his tour in Vietnam, he was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base which developed launching, tracking and recovery for the nation’s space program. Through his duties there, he got to know several astronauts including Buzz Aldrin and Chuck Yeager.

Lawrence reached the military grade of Senior Master Sergeant of which he was quite proud as only 2% of enlistments can attain that grade by law. He was a 27 year veteran and completed his high school education and some college credits while serving.

After his military retirement, he was employed by Northrop Corporation in Los Angeles building aircraft for several more years. Retiring from Northrop, he moved back to Austin. After so many years of building and repairing aircraft, he bought his own plane and learned to fly at about age 80.

While living in the Los Angeles area he met and married Victoria Rainwater, and her children became an important part of his life. All of his siblings were very proud of their big brother “Bud” and were overjoyed when he came home on his 30 day leave. He loved the big family picnics and his family loved to hear his adventure stories as much as he liked to tell them. He was kind-hearted and generous by nature.

His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. His step-daughter, Sabra and family were very special to him and they were always there to lend a hand to “Pops”. We truly appreciate all they did for him. Bud will be remembered for his big smile and his “story-telling”.

Survivors include his son-in-law, Greg Froomer; grandsons, Drake and Grant Froomer; step-daughters, Sabra Ann (Ken) Gray, Lisa Renee (Duane) Westman; step-grandchildren, James Westman, Kenneth (Erika) Gray, Miranda (Brad) Benson, and Kayla Gray; sisters, Marion Rankin, Winifred (Ken) Greenlee, Janet Finley and Judith Jones; sisters-in-law, Violet Wick, Patricia Finley; aunts, Marjorie Conrad, Christine Finley, and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.

David Eugene Lyle

1940-2019

April 23, 1940 - April 16, 2019

David Eugene Lyle, 78, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday morning, April 16, 2019 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, following a short battle with incurable Interstitial Lung Fibrosis. His loving wife of 58 years was at his side as he entered his eternal home in Heaven.

Dave was born on April 23rd, 1940, in Austin, Minnesota, to Bruce and Agatha Lyle of Oakland. He attended a country school near Oakland for eight years, then attended Austin High School and graduated in 1958. He grew up on his family’s farm where he toiled alongside his father and two brothers doing crop farming and feeding beef cattle and hogs. He learned how to work hard and passed on to his three sons a great work ethic. Dave was very active in the 4-H Club program in Freeborn County and held several offices in his 4-H Club and County. He loved showing cattle and was awarded a trip to National 4-H Club Congress in the Beef project. He was also very involved in FFA through Austin High School and held local and district offices, and participated in many judging contests on the state level for both 4-H and FFA.

He attended Austin Community College for one year and then started farming with his father. He took a break and served in the MN National Guard, then married his neighbor, Lucretia Lightly, on September 30th, 1961, in Austin, MN. Dave loved the soil and was a true farmer at heart. He highly valued the fact that he was farming 4th generation land and the family was given the “Century Farm” award. His favorite time of year was harvest and over the years he progressed from simple to high tech harvest equipment. Harvest was usually done with his father and cousins. He also loved to plow, as turning the soil over brought him great pleasure in preparing the soil for spring planting.

Dave was very involved in his community as 4-H volunteer leader and he and his wife, Lu, started the County 4-H Ambassador Leadership program and led this for many years. He was active with Mid America Dairy Assn., Farm Bureau and Fairview Cemetery. He also served the Lord through his church in Austin as Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee and Deacon and worked with the Youth, along with his wife. He enjoyed mowing the church lawn and helping out in many areas. He was a member of First Baptist and Grace Baptist Church.

Dave was a loving father and taught his three sons many skills of farm work and worked alongside the boys in doing farm chores, milking cows, field work and working with their 4-H animals. When the family went through the farm crisis in the 80’s, he went to work at Hormel to provide for the family’s needs. He held jobs in the kill and then became a Retort Cooker. He was employed there for 20 years but still managed to farm his land, golf, and was an avid sports fan. He especially loved watching his grandkids play various sports, or perform in a concert.

He and his wife Lu took their sons camping for many years and had fun going places and doing things together. Many years later, they enjoyed “Cousins Camp” with five of their grandkids. Dave and his wife Lu loved visiting Ireland and Scotland in celebration of their 50th Anniversary. They enjoyed 55 years in their country home until they moved to the Village Co-op in Austin where they currently reside. He was a wonderful, caring husband, father and grandpa. He loved his family and was proud of who they were. He had a ready smile for everyone and loved to talk “farming”, but his priorities were his faith in Jesus, his family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and son, Jeffrey Lyle.

Dave is survived by his wife, Lu of Austin, sons, Thomas (Mary) of Maplewood, Minnesota, Robert (Jacinth) of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Lauren, Jake, Rachel (Fiancé Caleb Baker), Samantha, Alexandra, Olivia and William Lyle; brothers, James (Pat) of LaPorte, Minnesota and John (Mary) of Monmouth, Illinois; sister-in-law, Mary Hansen, Austin, Minnesota; brothers-in-law, Charles (Shirley) Lightly, Austin, Minnesota and Ken (Cathy) Lightly, Blooming Prairie, Minnesota; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
