Leona Alpha (Christianson, Larson)
Schwartz

1918-2019

February 8, 1918 -- February 20, 2019 (age 101)

Leona A. Schwartz, age 101, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at Three Links Care Center in Northfield, Minnesota.

Survivors include her children, Janice Prescher of Ellendale, Minnesota, Merle Stensrud of Freeborn, Minnesota, Lowell (Toni) Larson of Dent, Minnesota, Joyce Stenzel of Albert Lea, MN, Ken (Wendy) Larson of Austin, MN, Kevin Schwartz of Arizona City, AZ, Judy Schwartz of Shakopee, MN, Barb (David) Gingerich of Eagan, MN and son-in-law Phillip Morreim of Albert Lea, MN; 20 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, 35 great-great-grandchildren; one sister Elvira Young of New Richland, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and the many people she showered her love with. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Martha Christianson; husband, Gail Larson; husband, Elmer Schwartz; one daughter, Sharon Morreim; 2 grandsons, Gerald Morreim and Derek Larson; one sister, Edith Lee; and three brothers, Art, Marvin and Lyle Christianson.

Leona Alpha Christianson was born on February 8, 1918 to George and Martha (Stoddart) Christianson in Freeborn County, Minnesota. She grew up in the area on a farm and graduated from the Freeborn High School. Her first marriage was to Gail Larson. Together they had 6 children and were later divorced. She married briefly again and had one son. On July 20, 1962 she married Elmer Schwartz and they had two daughters. Together they raised their family in Austin across the street from the Crane Chapel Church until Elmer passed away in 2011. At that time Leona relocated to Northfield, MN.

Family was important to Leona, she loved her role as a Wife, Mother, Grandmother. With a big family it wasn't always easy to balance everything but she tried to get to every special event the family had. She enjoyed being around kids and young people. She often told us stories about growing up on the farm with her sisters and brothers- the work they did and how they got around. This included her early years on the farm with her young kids. She always liked spending time with her Grandchildren.

Her religion and church were important to her too. She really liked to participate in the different groups the church offered as well as volunteering for them. She made a point to have a connection with the Pastors and people of the church. Much of the socializing she did was with the members.

Everyone knew Leona loved to sew. She would make clothing for her family and for other people or do alterations. She taught her daughters how to sew and in return her older daughters taught her how to quilt. In the early years she worked for the Singer Sewing Company, and later in a production room making drapes. She used this skill to help support the family. There were other jobs she had such as: book keeper/secretary for the garbage company, a nurses aid for a nursing home, a project leader for the Cedarvale Company, cleaning houses, and she even owned a restaurant at one time.

Leona also enjoyed camping and traveling, the neighborhood “Avon” coffee parties, playing cards with family & friends, gardening, house projects, and just being a part of the Austin community. She rarely missed a day walking one of the many dogs she had over the years- even into her 90's.

It has often been brought up that one of the reasons Leona lived to 101 is that she was so tough and determined. But she also had a great passion for learning and wasn’t afraid to try anything new from making her own kitchen cabinets, making chocolates, or learning how to work a computer and send email. She was very curious and always active, enjoyed a good laugh or good prank- that probably helped too.

Besides being 101 Leona had a brain tumor that grew and caused a lot of the problems she had later on in life. The tumor was situated on the part of the brain that controlled her behavior and actions. This at times was trying for those around her as her personality would change and cause outbursts. It did limit her ability to make new friends and socialize. Even with the tumor she still somehow managed to keep going and live a very independent life.

A lot happens in 101 years imagine what she has seen and been through. If you have stories to share with the family- we would love to hear them. Instead of flowers we would prefer donations be made to where she spent the last years of her life- Three Links Cottage East. They will go for needs the cottage has and part will go to the Activity Director so she can continue to do fun and engaging activities with the residents that live there.

Direct donations can be made online at https://threelinks.org/giving/

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at Crane Community Chapel in Austin with Pastor Dale Christiansen officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Austin, Memorials can be directed to the Three Links Cottage East in Northfield, MN. Duane Harold “Dewey” Hanson

1927-2019

Duane “Dewey” Harold Hanson, 91, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at St. Mark’s Living in Austin.

Dewey was born on Sept. 13, 1927, in Austin to Clarence and Hazel (Olson) Hanson. He graduated from Austin High School in 1946. On Sept. 11, 1946, Dewey enlisted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Korea, serving as a medical supply sergeant until Jan. 29, 1948, when he was honorably discharged as a decorated World War II veteran. He then attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis, graduating in 1949.

On July 10, 1949, Dewey was united in marriage to Winifred Warfield at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. They made their home in Austin and raised five sons. Dewey, along with his brother, Carleton, owned and operated the Champion Oil Company for 35 years. He also served as a Mower County Commissioner for 16 years. After retiring, Dewey worked for the Mower County Corrections Department, transporting juveniles and working on drug evaluations. He served as a guardian/conservator for Mower County as well, and continued to serve on the Planning Commission and Board of Adjustments.

Dewey liked to travel, especially to western parts of the United States, and he and Winnie enjoyed many winter trips to Arizona. In addition, he loved music, could play several instruments, and performed in bands for more than 70 years! He played the saxophone and clarinet in dance bands and was an original member of the Cedar River All Stars/Austin Swing Band. Over the years, he also played with the Alley Katz polka band, the Curt Wilkinson Trio, and the Jack Schultz Orchestra, travelling the country to various engagements until he was 90 years old! Dewey was proud to be a charter member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin, where he was actively involved. Furthermore, he was a 60-year member of Fidelity Lodge 39, a member of American Legion Post 91, a life-long member of VFW Post 1216, and he served in the VFW Color Guard.

Dewey and Winnie were blessed to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on July 10, 2014, and were surrounded by many friends and family members at a wonderful party on July 19, 2014, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. It was a very joyous occasion; Dewey and Winnie were touched by the great turnout and outpouring of love. During their long marriage, they not only raised five sons, but also loved and cared for many animals. Mandy and Buster were two of their special dogs, and their final beloved pet, Ginger kitty, was adopted from the Mower County Humane Society several years ago. “Gingy” was extremely special to them, brought them immense joy and happiness, and was a great comfort to Dewey after Winne’s death. Ginger and Dewey were constant companions until Ginger’s sad passing in December of 2018. He missed her and Winnie dearly and was looking forward to being reunited with “his girls” in Heaven.

Francis Neil Sherman

1930-2019

April 02, 1930 - March 08, 2019

Francis Neil Sherman, age 88, of Austin, Minnesota, entered God’s Kingdom on March 8, 2019.

Francis was born to Melvin and Violet (Whitney) Sherman on April 2nd, 1930 in Perham, Minnesota. He attended country school through the 8th grade after which he worked for several farmers, breaking horses and driving school bus until he purchased the family farm in the 1960s. Farm life proved to be an arduous one, tending his Jersey herd (plus a couple stray Guernseys) while raising the crops to feed them, but a gratifying life that he loved.

In 1965 he was united in marriage to Beverly Fletcher where they farmed and together had two daughters. Cindy first, followed by Candy 2 years later. He later married June Knopp and from this union his third daughter Rachel was born. His poor eyesight by this time had forced him to retire, sell his beloved farm and move to a home in Basswood where he lived until relocating to Austin MN with his wife Elaine.

Francis was passionate about many things, but family, faith, music and tractors topped the list. He was a virtuoso with nearly any stringed instrument, largely self-taught, his favorites being the banjo, mandolin and his beloved fiddle. His aptitude for restoring old tractors, especially Ford 9Ns, was incredible. He could rebuild one from the frame up despite his profound sight deficit.

His greatest source of pride, however, was his love for the lord, his grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he cherished.

He leaves as his legacy three daughters: Cindy Sperl (Stephen) of Audubon, MN, Candy Lachowitzer (Don) of Ottertail, MN and Rachel Johnson (Peter) of Lawrence, KS.

He also leaves to cherish his memory four siblings: Marion Swearingen of Tucson, AZ, Merle Sherman of Frazee, MN, Vance Sherman (Arlene) of Richville, MN and Charlotte Pyles (Jerry) of Anthem, AZ.

His treasured grandchildren include April Leitch (Mick) of Moorhead, MN, MacKenzie Barry of Fergus Falls, MN, Ben Stavaas of Co, Heather Schmid (Tyler) of Vergas, MN, Tyler Gigstead (Laura) of Fargo, ND, Dan Gigstead (Serena) of Detroit Lakes, MN, Brittany Schanandore (James) of Fargo, ND, Madison Guler (Marc) or Fargo, ND, Jenna Schmitz (Charlie) of Fargo, ND, Kate Lachowitzer of Ottertail, MN and step-grandchildren Evan Lachowitzer (Sam) of Perham, MN and Michael Hendrickx (Alida) of Sebeka, MN

Grandpa Francis has been further blessed with 21 great grandchildren (even one with his namesake) and another due to greet us in May. His legacy of love and kindness will live on through them for generations to come.

He is preceded in death by his parents Melvin and Violet, brother Paul Sherman, sister-in-law Joyce Sherman and brother-in-law John Swearingen.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Friday, March 22, 2019 at 11am at the Basswood Baptist Church in Riceville, MN with visitation one hour prior. (Basswood Baptist Church - 38188 340th Street, Richville, Minnesota 56576)

The family has many to thank for providing comfort during this most difficult time including the Clasen-Jordan funeral home in Austin for their kindness, friends for encouraging words, timely hugs, Pastor and Mrs. Holmquist and lastly, to Elaine for caring for and being Francis’ devoted companion the last years of his life.

May God bless the memory of Francis Neil Sherman

Leonard Norman Haugland

1915-2019

December 24, 1915 -- March 10, 2019 (age 103)

Leonard Haugland, lifelong Mower County resident, passed peacefully at the age of 103 on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at St. Mark’s Memory Care in Austin.

Leonard Norman Haugland was born on Christmas Eve 1915, the youngest son of mother Tone Olena Olson Haugland and father Nils Haugland, on the Olson-Haugland homestead in Nevada Township, a few miles east of Lyle on State Line Road. His wife of over fifty years, Geneva Aaby Haugland, his two older brothers Rudolph and Melvin, both of Lyle, and his oldest child Gene preceded him in death.

Growing up on the family farm, Leonard learned to drive at an early age and automobiles remained a lifelong passion and hobby. From the Model T Ford his mother allowed him to drive to parties on neighboring farms to owning one of the first Prius hybrids in Southern Minnesota, Leonard loved cars and prided himself on knowing the latest models and automobile technology.

Leonard attended the one-room school near the family farm and spent his early years learning farming from his brothers and neighbors. On the eve of World War II, he was working at Hormel when he met Geneva Aaby of Austin at the Terp Ballroom where they and their friends enjoyed weekend dances. They married in January 1941 and had three children, Gene (deceased), Elaine Fountain of Kennedale, Texas and David of West Hollywood, California.

During the war, Leonard served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Alaska alongside his father-in-law Oscar Aaby and his brother-in-law Hartvick Aaby. Returning to Austin, he worked at the Nash auto dealership before opening his own appliance business in Lyle. The family moved to Lyle in the early 1950s and lived there for a decade before returning to Austin. Leonard retired from Holiday Dodge in 1980.

In retirement, Leonard and Geneva enjoyed time with friends and family, renovated houses, and traveled. They made many visits to Norway, Colorado, Texas, and the Pacific Northwest prior to Geneva’s passing in 2001. Just a month after 9/11, Leonard traveled to Norway for a family reunion at Rjukan where cousins Knut and Ottar Haugland had been active in the Norwegian resistance during the German occupation. In 2003, Leonard joined family, friends and neighbors to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Olson-Haugland-Anderson farm, now owned by his niece Lorna Haugland Anderson and her family.

In fall 2015, he drove his restored 1930 Model A Ford from his home to St. Olaf Church to celebrate his 100th birthday with over 300 guests. As a Mower County centenarian, he was interviewed by the Minnesota Historical Society Oral History Project.

Leonard was active in community activities in Austin and Lyle throughout his life. He was a founding member of the Lions Club, served as an officer, and frequently represented the club at state and national conventions. On a Lions trip to Acapulco, Mexico, in the mid-1950s, he went deep sea fishing for the first time and caught a swordfish which did not return to Minnesota.

Leonard was especially proud of his participation in the Lions International eye bank and eyeglass recycling program for children. He was recognized for his service and leadership with numerous awards. His collection of hundreds of Lions Club pins from around the world are on display at the Austin Senior Center. For decades, he was active in the Austin chapter of Sons of Norway, enjoying the companionship and cuisine of friends who shared a common heritage.

As a longtime member of the Model A Club, he frequently drove his restored 1930 Model A coupe in Fourth of July parades and classic car events. A member of St. Olaf Church for over fifty years, Leonard continued to serve as an usher at Sunday services until age 100. Blessed with good health throughout his life, Leonard fully enjoyed community and church events as well as coffee and meals with friends at local cafes until his final day.

Leonard is survived and remembered by his children Elaine and David, his longtime companion Jean Quednow, and loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, family and friends locally, across the country, and in Norway.

Services and interment will be scheduled later in spring when weather allows. We invite you to remember and celebrate Leonard's life with memorials in his name to the Lions Club eye bank and eyeglass program, Sons of Norway, Six Mile Grove Church, and St. Olaf Church. Services are prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
