Jurine Lucille (Arett) Johnson 1921-2019
Jurine L. Johnson, 97, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, died Monday, Feb. 11,
2019, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Albert Lea.
Jurine Lucille (Arett) Johnson was born on Oct. 26, 1921, in Mower
County, Minnesota, on the family farm east of Moscow, Minnesota, the
second born of the children to this family. Jurine was baptized into the
faith on Jan. 29, 1922, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota,
and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea.
On Aug. 14, 1939, Jurine and Roland Johnson were united in marriage in
Algona, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Charles, Stanley,
Ronald, Kenneth and Marsha. Jurine and Roland moved to Oakland, Minnesota,
where they lived until Roland’s death in 1994.
Jurine then moved to St. Ansgar, Iowa, to be closer to her daughter,
Marsha, and lived there for 19 years. Jurine and Marsha spent many hours
of enjoyment going to Christian Women’s club meetings, herb festivals in
Greene, Iowa, and First Lutheran Church bazaars in St. Ansgar each year.
They enjoyed the bazaar’s wonderful salad luncheon and never left without
purchasing some lefse.
Jurine visited Marsha and Harlan’s farm and enjoyed many meals together. She also helped Marsha prepare and preserve the garden produce. Jurine later moved to Austin to live near her son, Ronald, and daughter-in-law, Barb, and her grandchildren. Jurine was a resident at Our House Assisted Living for three years and enjoyed her little apartment very much and all their holiday celebrations.
Jurine became a resident of St. John’s Lutheran Community in March of 2016, and had the opportunity to live near her son, Charles, and her grandchildren in Albert Lea. Jurine enjoyed the birds at St. John’s and the various music performances that were provided each month. Jurine and Marsha enjoyed walks around the grounds of St. John’s and the summer gardens that were planted each year. Jurine kept track of the first shoot of rhubarb that came through the ground each spring and the flowers and vegetables that were growing. That first radish of the summer is always wonderful and Jurine loved to make a radish sandwich.
Jurine used to go to visit in her son, Kenny, and wife, Linda, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Sioux City, Iowa. Kenny’s daily calls meant the world to Jurine; she looked forward to them each day and shared the news with the rest of the family. She loved spending time with the family. Sundays were a time of worship for Jurine, either at the chapel at St. John’s or quite often Peace and Power of First Lutheran Church of Albert Lea. Jurine listened to Peace and Power for many years; thank you so much for your outreach of this project.
Jurine is survived by her children, Charles Johnson of Albert Lea, Kenneth (Linda) Johnson of Sioux City and Marsha (Harlan) Kuntz of St. Ansgar; daughters-in-law, Rita Johnson of Albert Lea and Barbara Johnson of Austin; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren;15 great-great-grandchildren and counting; sisters, Margie Barber of Northwood, Iowa, Libby (Darrel) Maternowski of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, and Marlene Brown of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and brother, Jerome (Karen) Arett of Albert Lea.

Teresa Marie Tschann 1963-2019
April 10, 1963 - February 16, 2019
Obituary for Teresa Marie Tschann
Teresa “Momma T” Marie Tschann, age 55, passed away February 16, 2019 surrounded by her loving family at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
Teresa was born to David and Delores Tschann on April 10, 1963 in Austin, Minnesota. She grew up in Austin, graduating from Austin Senior High School in 1981, and went on to obtain her LPN degree from Riverland Community College. After graduation she began work at St. Olaf Hospital (know now as Mayo Clinic Health System) where she dedicated over 25 years to helping others. Continuing her educational development throughout her career, Teresa also received her two-year RN degree from Riverland Community College and most recently pursued a BSN RN degree through Rasmussen College.
With her 33 years of nursing experience, she was an invaluable resource that her family would seek out for her medical advice.
Teresa was loved and cherished by many other families including her co-workers on the Psychiatric Unit, Tommie Softball, and Faye’s Concessions. She also had many accomplishments in her career, most notably being recognized for going above and beyond her job duties as a nurse on multiple occasions. She was known as a mentor for new nurses on the unit offering years of expertise and knowledge. Teresa was a gentle guide with a steady hand, and was an absolute natural at knowing the right diagnosis.
She was known on her work unit as a straight shooter and was often called upon to deal with difficult situations like advising patients when it was time to bathe. Her no nonsense attitude coupled with her big heart will be missed by many including her patients, fellow nursing staff, hospital security guards and door attendants.
While deeply dedicated to her career, Teresa was even more devoted to her family. She could always be found cheering on the sidelines, particularly for softball, and nothing brought her more joy than her role as a grandmother to Mikayden.
Her love for cooking was undeniable, often bringing in the best plates to many social gatherings. Teresa enjoyed getting together with friends and family. She expressed this passion every Halloween with fun foods, spooky drinks, and costumes. Every summer since childhood, Teresa looked forward to spending all of her vacation in Shell Lake, Wisconsin.
She would be found with a headband in her hair and always next to the water. Teresa was a true caretaker, she was the glue that held everyone together. She could strike up a conversation with anyone and would - especially in HyVee or Walmart – that’s just the kind of person she was! She always had the right diagnosis, the best food, and the sassiest attitude accompanied by the brightest smile.
Preceded in death by grandparents, Louis and Alice Belshan, Felix and Mary Tschann.
Teresa is survived by her daughters, Melissa Tschann and fiancé Marcus Ball, Algona, IA, Danielle Tschann, Minneapolis, MN; grandson, Mikayden Ball; parents, David and Delores Tschann, Austin, MN; siblings, Mark (Jo) Tschann, Savage, MN, Gary (Brenda) Tschann, Rochester, MN, Paul (Monica) Tschann, Zumbrota, MN, Joan (David) Hagen, Blooming Prairie, MN, Carol (Paul) Bultman, Waseca, MN, Brian (Mindy) Tschann, Rogers, MN; 20 nephews and nieces.

Diane (Greene, Spiess, Kouba) Orchard 1939-2019
July 28, 1939 - February 20, 2019
Obituary for Diane Orchard
Diane Spiess (Kouba) Orchard, age 79, of Zumbrota (formerly of Albert
Lea), gained her wings on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at Samaritan Bethany
in Rochester.
Diane was born in Austin, MN on July 28, 1939, to Cyrol Spiess and Theresa
(Uzlik) Greene. She spent her younger years in Austin and graduated from
Austin High School.
One of Diane’s early ventures was modeling for fashion shows at Wallace’s
Department Store. Her love of sewing kept her busy making clothes for her
children and doing projects for friends and family.
Over the years, she worked in a former family business and North Park
store in Albert Lea. She spent her career in sales, always sharing a smile
and kind words with everyone she met. To her, there were no strangers, only
friends she had not yet met. One of her great passions was rescuing dogs
from shelters and loved keeping them as family pets in her home over the
years. Her hobbies included hunting, snowmobiling, hanging out at the
lake, and being a kick-ass cook and baker.
She was an avid book and movie lover who preferred conversation over
a cup of coffee over a phone call and had a distinct, sharp sense of humor.
Her pride and joy were her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids, always
making sure to send cards or call to check in when she knew a birthday
was coming. Her sense of compassion led her to volunteer with the Jaycees,
work with children, and spend time serving her family. Even when money was
tight, she was always there to lend a hand to those in need. To the very
end, her stubborn will and determination kept her alive and thriving until
she was called home.
Survivors include: Jeff (Patty) Kouba of St. Francis, Phil (Melanie)
Kouba of Brainerd, Liz Bachtle (Curt Benson) of Albert Lea, Joe Kouba of
Mazeppa, Sarah (Pat) McGowan of Tucson, AZ, Richard (Christina) Orchard
of Pine Island, and Beth (Steve) Kudwa Of Carol Stream, IL. She is also
survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren in whom she took
much pride and her sister, Sharon (Spiess) Pfeifer of Rochester.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Cyrol Spiess and Theresa (Uzlik)
Greene.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 am on Thursday,
February 28, 2019, at Mayer Funeral Home with Pastor Lauren W. Orchard
officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at Mayer
Funeral Home. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorials preferred to the Humane Society of Freeborn County may be made
in her name.
Condolences may be left online at www.mayerfh.com
