Mary "Alice" (Hatten) Jensen

1937-2019

June 20, 1937 - January 25, 2019

Alice Jensen (81) of rural Sargeant passed away peacefully on January 25, 2019 at Prairie Meadows in Kasson, MN after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

(Mary) Alice Hatten was born on June 20, 1937 in Carroll, IA, to Arnold and Walburga (Rahe) Hatten. They later moved to the Brownsdale/Austin, MN area. She graduated from Pacelli High School and went to work at the Mower County Courthouse.

Alice married Richard Jensen of Sargeant on May 28, 1960 and became a stay-at-home mom. She was very active through the years working with the Mower County 4-H Program, Rural Youth and Sargeant Township Board. Alice was also the secretary at Evanger Lutheran Church for 40+ years. Alice’s passion was working with the American Legion Auxiliary, both at the local Hayfield Post 330 and District levels. Her favorite projects were the local spelling bee which she initiated, and the Minnesota Girls State program.

Alice enjoyed playing cards, gardening, quilting, dancing to old time music, reading, traveling and puzzles – crossword, jigsaw and word searches.

Alice is survived by her husband Richard of nearly 59 years and children – Cheryl (Philip) Woodward of Pine Island, MN, Linda (Rich Snyder) Jensen of Phoenix, AZ, Mike (Betsy) Jensen of San Jose, CA and Grant (Scott Neitzel) Jensen of Afton, MN. She is also survived by grandchildren – Billy, Claire, Tegan, Tyler, Sam and Riley. Alice’s surviving siblings include Phil Hatten, Dave Hatten, Joe Hatten, Barb Mensink and Margie Sprick.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings - Gene Hatten, Janet Hatten, Georgia Schramm, Don Hatten and Dan Hatten.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 29 at 11:00 AM at Evanger Lutheran Church 33554 660th Avenue, Sargeant MN. Burial will follow at the church cemetery immediately afterward.

Visitation for Alice will be held on Monday, January 28, 4:00-7:00 PM at Czaplewski Funeral Home 501 2nd Street NW in Hayfield MN and one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to the Hayfield American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Program or the Minnesota Girls State program.

The family would like to express its thanks to the Prairie Meadows and St. Croix Hospice staff members for the excellent care you provided to Alice. You made her very happy and comfortable all the way through her journey.

"Mitzi" Plath

1920-2019

March 02, 1920 - January 08, 2019

Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Mina (Mitzi) Hagelund Plath, 98 of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Our House Memory Care in Austin.

Mina Hazel was born March 2, 1920 to Henry and Martha (Lee) Hovland on a farm in Frost, Minnesota and went to high school in Albert Lea, graduating in 1938. Mitzi met Jonas Hagelund from Austin at a dance and they married in 1939, settling in Austin to raise five children. After Jonas died in 1975, she learned to drive and worked part-time as a cook at the Gerard School. Following the death of her second husband, Edwin Plath, she and her eldest son, Jim, shared a house in Austin until Jim’s death in 2017.

All her long life, Mitzi loved to listen to music, dance, laugh, cook, play cards, watch the Twins and Vikings and talk with her family members scattered across the country. A devoted member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, her faith and her dear friends at the church brought her much comfort as she aged to two months shy of her 99th birthday.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Jonas Hagelund; second husband, Edwin Plath; son, James B. Hagelund and her seven siblings.

Mitzi is survived by her children, Marlene Schmidt, Okoboji, Iowa; Mary Jo Dobson, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Jon Hagelund (Jeanine Hartman), New Mexico and Karen Hagelund (Jim Peterson), San Francisco, California; over 50 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 11th at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Reverend Mark Niethammer officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church one hour before the service.

Kathie Elaine (Stahl) Yennie

1945-2019

Kathie E. Yennie, 73, of Rochester, Minnesota, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Marys Campus-Rochester with her loving family by her side. She had been a patient for one week.

Kathie Elaine Stahl was born on June 1, 1945, in Austin, Minnesota, to Herman and Marian (Stephens) Stahl. She grew up in rural Sargeant, Minnesota, on the family farm and attended Hayfield schools, graduating from Hayfield High School in 1963. She moved to Rochester, where she was employed as a nurse’s aid for a few years at St. Marys Hospital. Kathie was married on July 11, 1970, in Byron, Minnesota, to Gerald R. Yennie.

Following their marriage, the couple lived in Rochester, where they raised their daughter and have continued to make their home. Kathie was a homemaker and daycare provider from her home for many years. She was also employed at D&R Vending in Rochester and as a manager in the receiving department at Walmart South at the time of her retirement.

Mr. Yennie was a longtime employee of Tele-Prompter Cable Co. in Rochester. Kathie was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Rochester and, with her husband Gerald, was a longtime member of the Eagles in Rochester. Kathie enjoyed knitting, crocheting, bingo, coloring with her colored pencils, camping, fishing, and loved time spent with family, especially her grandchildren.

Kathie is survived by her husband, Gerald; her daughter and son-in-law, Jackie Beltz (Tony Kunz) of Rochester; four grandchildren, Ryan Beltz, Lacey Beltz, Adam Kunz and Noah Kunz; sister, Mary Hirsch of Wabasha, Minnesota; four brothers, Norman (Leona) Stahl of Virginia, Kenneth (Beverly) Halliday of Austin, Herman Stahl Jr. of Byron and Donald Stahl of Rochester; brother-in-law, Charles VandeLinde of Virginia; and many nieces, nephews, great-niece and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Marian Stahl; sister, Bessie VandeLinde; sister-in-law, Amanda Stahl; and brother-in-law, Jack Hirsch.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville, Minnesota, with the Rev. Caila Rinker officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester. A time of visitation for family and friends will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home for one prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home. Elaine Marilyn (Kirchner) Taylor

1935-2019

Elaine Marilyn Taylor, 83, of Dexter, Minnesota, died Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at Crest View Villa, where she had lived since September 2017.

Elaine Marilyn Kirchner was born May 31, 1935, in Mower County, Minnesota, to Elmer and Thelma (Haarstad) Kirchner. She graduated from Austin High School. She was united in marriage to Dale Taylor on June 26, 1952, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Sargeant, Minnesota. The couple farmed in the Sargeant area for many years.

Elaine enjoyed cooking, knitting, playing cards, especially bridge, bowling, traveling, and spending time at their family cabin in Laporte, Minnesota. Elaine was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sargeant, where she was one of the oldest living members. She was also an acting member of St. John’s Lutheran Church’s ladies aid. Above all else, Elaine enjoyed spending time and laughing with her beloved children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews.

Elaine is survived by her son, Steven Taylor (Wendy Filipek) of Burnsville, Minnesota; daughter, Kari (Jerry) Siemers of Dexter; surrogate son, Jeremy (Susan) Claxton of Mazeppa, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Rob (Ruth) Taylor, Jacob (Katelyn) Siemers, Kailee Siemers, Jaimee Siemers, Morgan Hoefs and Carter Claxton; three great-grandchildren, Logan Taylor, Grayden Siemers and Brynn Johnson; one brother, Charles (Phyllis) Kirchner; and one sister, Colleen (John) Kvasnicka. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two infant children; three sisters, Judy Dalager, Carol Schatz and Monica Fiduk; and one niece, Michele Boelter.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 28959 630th Ave., Sargeant, MN, with the Rev. Ronald Prigge officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, 2019, at the church and one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Luella B. (Beach) Schmitt

1920-2019

Luella B. Schmitt, 98, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018, at The Cedars of Austin.

She was born to Roland and Emma (Schroeder) Beach on Nov. 20, 1920, in Long Prairie, Minnesota. Lu met her future husband, Norbert Schmitt, while they were students at the University of Minnesota. They resided in Winona, Minnesota, and West St. Paul, Minnesota, before moving to Austin in 1956.

Lu was a homemaker and bookkeeper. She performed volunteer work as a Red Cross Gray Lady, was President of the Austin Country Club Ladies Golf, served as a member of the Austin Park and Recreation Department for 14 years, and attained the rank of Life Master in Bridge. She was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church for many years and later attended Cornerstone Church.

Survivors include sons, Dr. Norbert (Phyllis), Naples, Florida, Dr. Tim (Gingie), Wadena, Minnesota, and Steven (Betty Jo), Rosemount, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Lu was preceded in death by her parents, Roland and Emma Beach; husband, Nobert Schmitt; and siblings, Wilma Beach, Sally Clavin and Harland Beach.

A Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, at Mayer Funeral Home. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Marvin John Ellingson

1936-2019

Marvin John Ellingson, 82, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Marys Campus-Rochester.

Marvin was born Oct. 18, 1936, in Kasson, Minnesota, to Sanford and Ella (Stark) Ellingson. He grew up in Dexter, Minnesota, and graduated from Austin High School. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. Marvin married Elaine Richardson (Mucha) on May 21, 1960, and they had five children. They later divorced.

After dating for 21 years, he married Corliss Wagner on Feb. 14, 2009. Together they enjoyed attending car shows, stock car races, auctions and many motorcycle rides. In his younger years, he farmed with his Dad on the family farm in Dexter. “Hillbilly” was an owner operator of Ellingson Trucking for 45 years and loved his time on the road. Marvin loved spending time with his many friends; he couldn’t go anywhere without running into a familiar face. He was a wonderful Dad and you could count on a weekly call or for him to drop in for a visit. He loved each and every one of his grandchildren with his whole heart and was a kid at heart when he was around them.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Corliss; brothers, Stuart (Kaye) Ellingson and Ellsworth (Ann) Ellingson; five children, Richard (Brenda), Waltham, Minnesota, Steven Ellingson, Austin, Susan (Todd) Haroldson, Albert Lea, Minnesota, Sheri (Scott) Oakland, Brownsdale, Minnesota, and Kristine (Sean) Brink, Albert Lea; stepdaughter, Lorri (Matt) Talberg; 13 grandchildren, Amanda, Melissa, Jeff, Samantha, Naomi, Stephanie, Jessie, Aronn, Tyler, Jackie, Elisa, Kameron and Nicholas; and 11 great-grandchildren.

We know your time on earth is finished and you are in heaven driving a semi, driving through unlimited car lots and taking long Harley rides, but you will be missed by so many!

A Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Brownsdale with the Rev. Lisa Vick officiating. Paul Leo Perkins

1942-2019

Paul Leo Perkins, 76, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

Paul was born January 16, 1942, in Jordan Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota, to Bernard and Helen Perkins. He was the eighth of 11 children.

A husband, a brother, and a friend, Paul lived a full life his way. Paul was truly one of a kind. He succumbed in death after a courageous battle with rheumatoid arthritis, which he fought for over 45 years.

He will be sorely missed and often remembered by those who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Judy Riles Perkins; his parents; and five of his siblings.

Richard Henry “Dick” Magee

1929-2019

Richard Henry “Dick” Magee, 89, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at Our House Memory Care in Austin.

Richard was born on Dec. 2, 1929, in Austin to Joe and Emily (Moshier) Magee. He graduated from Austin High School in 1947 and married Darlean Iverson on Sept. 10, 1953. Richard was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Dick grew up and farmed the family farm until his retirement, upon which he spent time with his passions, woodworking and operating an antique business. He was active in Mower County Pork Producers, 4-H and FFA. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards, dancing and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Emily Magee; son-in-law, John Verducci; sisters, Evelyn Goslee and Viola Warrington; and brother, Kenny Magee.

Richard is survived by his children, Debra (Magee) Verducci, Arlington, Virginia, Dale (Julie) Magee, Bloomington, Minnesota, Deanna Magee (Jeff Huber) Brighton, Michigan, David Magee, Arlington, and Douglas Magee, Two Harbors, Minnesota; grandchildren, Kimberly (Andrew) Robinson, Steven (Sarah) Magee and Emily (Steven) Kuplic; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Rev. Madison Chelberg officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Woodbury Cemetery. Carmine Kaye McCown

1943-2019

Carmine Kaye (Jensen) McCown, 75, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, after fighting small cell carcinoma for a year.

She was born Sept. 21, 1943, in Austin, Minnesota, to Carl and Kathryn Jensen. She graduated from Austin High School in 1961. She transferred from Mayo Rochester Campus to Mayo Scottsdale when they opened and retired from there. In 1993, she married Ron McCown. They made their home in Fountain Hills, Arizona.

Carmine is survived by her husband, Ron; sister, Denise Nelson; son, Trent (Jeri) Maxfield; daughters, Tracy Johnson and Shelly Maxfield; stepson, RJ McCown; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A wake will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Fountain Hills.

Jan (Anderson) Madsen

1959-2018

Jan Madsen, 59, of Grimes, Iowa, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2018, at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Jan was born Sept. 4, 1959, in Austin, to Delmer and Mary Anderson. She was united in married to Rich Madsen on May 14, 2011. Jan worked as a budget analyst for Northern Natural Gas in Johnston, Iowa, for 26 years.

She is survived by her husband, Rich; and father, Delmer Anderson. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Deacon Rich Aho officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Austin. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family. Jan Madsen

Jan Madsen, 59 of Grimes passed away on December 31, 2018 at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A memorial services will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 7, 2018 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale.

Jan was born September 4, 1959 in Austin, Minnesota to Delmer & Mary Andserson. She was united in married to Rich Madsen on May 14, 2011. Jan worked as a budget analyst for Northern Natural Gas in Johnston for 26 years.

She is survived by her husband Rich, and father Delmer.

She is preceded in death by her mother Mary.

Marea Pappas

1932-2019

June 21, 1932 - January 10, 2019

Marea Pappas, 86 of Austin, Minnesota, died at her home on Thursday, January 10, 2019.

Marea was born on June 21, 1932, in Austin, Minnesota, to William and Marie (Skinner) Pappas. Marea graduated from Austin High School and was a long time employee of the Hormel Foods Corporation. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

Marea was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Angela, Elaine and Rose; and brother David James.

She is survived by her cousins and friends including her life long friend, Margaret Owens, Austin, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 19th at Christ Episcopal Church with Father John Sullivan officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church one hour before the service on Saturday.

Floyd “Donald” Wytaske

1931-2019

Obituary

Floyd “Donald” Wytaske, age 87 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at The Cedars of Austin.

Don was born on May 21, 1931, in Denison, Iowa, to Leo and Helen (Alwin) Wytaske. He moved around with his family as a child and when he was in his teens they moved to Austin, Minnesota, where Don attended Austin High School.

On September 30, 1950, he was united in marriage to Dolores Tabor, in Austin. Together the couple had 5 children. Don worked at Hormel Foods in Austin for 40 years. He was a hard worker and instilled a work ethic early in his children’s lives. Don and the kids overhauled coke crates for the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Austin and took his children throughout SE Minnesota on Sunday mornings delivering newspapers.

From 1970-1976, Don ran a Sno-Jet snowmobile dealership out of his garage. Don and his son Mark also owned and operated Cedmarc Enterprises, building race car components. He also farmed with his friend Russ for a few years. After retiring from Hormel, he started Don’s Lawn Care. Don enjoyed the Minnesota Vikings and Monday night football. He loved cars and racing, Don raced stock cars throughout Minnesota and Iowa, he also built them. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his children, David (Betty Jean) Wytaske of Austin, Minnesota, Gail (David) Moffit of Austin, Minnesota, Janet (Daryl) Johnson of Owatonna, Minnesota, Mark (Annette) Wytaske of Austin, Minnesota, Scott Wytaske of Maplewood, Minnesota; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brother, Howard (Sharon) Wytaske of Austin, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Helen Wytaske; wife, Dolores in 2005; and by five brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, at the Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and will continue for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Austin. Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association. Services are prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin.

William Luther Bang

1946-2019

William (Wil) Luther Bang of, Cary, North Carolina, died Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at Transitions LifeCare with family members at his side.

He was born in 1946 in Austin, Minnesota.

Wil is survived by his wife, Judy; their children, Leah Bang of Raleigh, North Carolina, Holly Bang Vogelsberg and her husband, Cliff, and daughters, Carson and Maslan, of Raleigh, Josh Bang of Raleigh, and Sarah Bang Roberts and her husband, Geoff, and sons, Braylon and Crew, of Cary; brothers, George Bang of Kilkenny, Minnesota, and Mike Bang of Faribault, Minnesota; and a large extended family.

Wil was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Lorraine Bang; and brother, Curt Thompson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at Peace Presbyterian Church, 1777 W Chatham St., Cary, NC 27513. There will be a private family burial at 3 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Pastor David Vernon DeFor

1943-2019

Pastor David Vernon DeFor, age 75 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at his home in Austin. David was born on July 28, 1943 in Austin, Minnesota to Vernon and Erna (Hansen) DeFor. He grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School in 1961. David graduated from Minnesota Bible College in 1965. He received his Master of Divinity degree from Lincoln Christian College.

To further his education, David studied at the North American Baptist Seminary, where he received his Doctor of Ministry. He pastored at many churches in the Midwest and taught for 5 years at Nebraska Christian College in Norfolk, Nebraska. On March 6, 1965, David married Donna Shaw in Bloomington, Minnesota. Together the couple had 3 children, Amy, Andrea, and Tim. David was a minister for the Church of Christ in Austin. His greatest love was spending time with his entire family. He loved the Aviation Club, flying airplanes, golfing, and woodworking. David was a world traveler who made friends everywhere he went. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and in his free time reading books. Dave was a lifelong learner. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife, Donna DeFor of Austin, MN; children, Amy (Ricky) Riley of Austin, MN, Andrea (Troy) Justice of Pomona, NY, Tim (Julie) DeFor of Norfolk, NE; 14 grandchildren, Phillip Riley, Elijah Riley, Devin Riley, Montana Riley, Quinton Riley, Jaxon (Hannah) Justice, Isaiah Justice, Morgan Justice, Keriann (Collin) Heller, Marshall DeFor, Grant DeFor, Lauren DeFor, Jordan (Ivana) Hicks, and Taylor Justice; three great-grandchildren, Madi Justice, Colton Pendleton, and Ayven Hicks; sister, Cecelia (Andrew) Manoochehri of California; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Erna DeFor; and one brother, Stephen DeFor.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 21, 2019, at Cornerstone Church in Austin, Minnesota with Pastor David Simerson officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 20, at the Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin at a later date. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements.

Delores Mabel (Nelson) Davis

1929-2019

Delores M. Davis, age 89, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at The Cedars of Austin.

Delores Mabel Nelson was born on December 6, 1929 in Mower County to Charles and Theadora (Weiland) Nelson. She attended school in Brownsdale and Austin High School, graduating in 1947. She then received her teaching certificate and taught country school near Hayfield, Minnesota. Delores later worked in the dentist office for Dr. Huebner until his retirement. Then she worked for Dr. Schindler until his retirement.

In 1952, she married Duane Foster. Together they had two children. The couple later divorced. In 1970, Delores married Vernon Merrell Davis at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Austin. Delores worked hard and did things well. She assisted in finishing her and Vernon’s home when it was being built. Delores also enjoyed cross stitching. She will be missed dearly.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon Davis of Austin, MN; children Steven (Kathy) Foster of Brownsdale, MN, Charlene Evans of Detroit Lakes, MN; 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brother, Everett Nelson of Austin, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Theda Nelson; one brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 21, 2019, at Grace Baptist Church in Austin with Pastor Devin Larson officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brownsdale, MN. Wallace Burdette ‘Wally’ Bustad

1935-2019

Obituary

Wallace Burdette ‘Wally’ Bustad, age 83 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2019 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.

He was born October 5, 1935 in Austin to Ingvald and Augusta (Hanson) Bustad. Wally attended and graduated from Austin High School, after school he entered into the Army. Following his honorable discharge, he began working at Lysne Construction. He then started his own business, Wallace Bustad Crane Service. Later in life he started Bustad Excavating and Roll Off. In his work he tore down over 1,000 buildings including government centers, homes, jails, churches and even finishing tearing down the old Hormel Plant. He would try to find ways to repurpose the usable supplies from the tear downs. He retired in 2014.

In 1999, he purchased Chateau Speedway, he owned the racetrack for over 10 years and ran modify race cars for 13 years. Wally was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, The Eagles of Austin, Chamber of Commerce and in the IUOE Local 49. Wally enjoyed supporting the Lyle Cancer Auction. He took trips to Vegas for Construction Expos. He enjoyed flying, and had his license to fly in 1959. Wally enjoyed driving motorcycles, snowmobiles, and go-carts. He was a generous and trusting person to a fault always wanting to help out others. It didn’t matter who you were he was always there to talk to you. Wally will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Survivors include his three sons Timothy Bustad of Austin, MN, Brian (Tammi) Bustad of Rose Creek, MN, and Randy Bustad of Blaine, MN; Walley’s girlfriend, Doreen Nelson of Dexter, MN; six grandchildren, Nathan, Brendan, Bryton, Isaac, Tommy, and Amber; three great-grandchildren; brother, Arnold Bustad of Cross Lake, MN; two sisters, Marion Baxter of River Falls, WI, Deanna Schewe of Blooming Prairie, MN.

Wally was preceded in death by his parents Ingvald and Agusta Bustad, siblings Kenneth (Beverly) Bustad; Violet (Rodney) Huckabay, Evelyn (Dwain) Beckel, Edward (Pat) Bustad; sister-in-law Arlene Bustad; and brothers-in-law Keith Shewe and Richard Baxter.

Marjorie Ann (Goetsch) Gleason

1928-2019

Marjorie A. Gleason, age 90 of Champlin, Minnesota, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Brookdale Champlin Assisted Living in Champlin, Minnesota.

Marjorie Ann (Goetsch) Gleason was born on March 13, 1928, the only child of Herbert and Hazel Goetsch, during a thriving blizzard in Waltham, Minnesota. The doctor had to come on a railroad hand/section car from Hayfield due to the closed roads. As her father passed away when she was 10, she and her mother became very close. After graduating from Austin High School, together they moved to California, where Marjorie became a legal secretary. Later they moved back to Austin, and she worked at Mier Wolf and Sons. In 1971, after raising her family, she started working as a secretary at Austin Public Schools until her retirement in 1993.

She married Robert E. Gleason on September 14, 1949. To this union Mark, LeAnn, and Merriann were born. Robert and Marjorie lived on a farm by Lansing Corners for over 50 years. After Robert’s death in 2005, she moved into the Chauncey Apartments. She enjoyed seeing Merriann at Chanhassen Dinner Theater in many musicals, Mark giving his dad flying lessons on Father’s Day, traveling with LeAnn later in life and spending time with her beloved granddaughter, Alysen.

In her earlier years she was a member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Waltham, and later joined Grace Lutheran Church in Austin. Marjorie will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Left to mourn are her children, Mark (Diane) Gleason of Balsam Lake, WI, LeAnn (Michael) Johnson of Spooner, WI, Merriann (Mark) Nesse of Maple Grove, MN; 2 granddaughters, Alysen LeAnn Nesse of Minneapolis, MN, Heather (Ron) Elliot of Mountain, WI; and many dear nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Robert Eugene Gleason; parents, Herbert and Hazel Wollenburg; step-father, Harold Wollenburg; and several special dogs. She’s holding Rubee with Travis and Phoebe at her feet.

The family would like to thank the staff of Brookdale Champlin and Moments Hospice for their extraordinary, loving care of Marjorie this past year. After a private interment, we invite all who would like to join us in a celebration of Margie at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Patrick Ziems officiating. Leo Leonard Hage

1935-2019

Leo Leonard Hage, 83, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019.

He was born on July 31, 1935, in Lakefield, Minnesota, to Albert and Helen Hage. Leo lived in Austin, Minnesota, until 1997, when he settled in Bokeelia, Florida, for 20 beautiful years with Judy, his beloved wife of 26 years. Judy and Leo moved to Marietta, Georgia, in 2017 when his health became comprised.

Leo attended school in Lakefield before going to work in Michigan. He was called to serve in the U.S. Army, then returned to start LL Hage Construction and Parkview Auto in Austin after his service. Leo was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and the Elks. He spent many years enjoying the Pine Island and Bokeelia Boat Club with his wife and many of their friends.

Leo is survived by his wife, Judy Marzen Hage; daughters, Laurie Hage of San Juan, Costa Rica, Sally Hage of Long Meadow, Massachusetts, and Kristin (Kurt) Hartman of Western Springs, Illinois; stepchildren, Russell (Emily) Marzen of Marietta, Julie (Joe) Taets of Chicago, Illinois, Rebecca (Anthony) DiMarco of New York, New York, Randy (Debi) Marzen of Davenport, Iowa, Deno (Lynne) Marzen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Brenda (Doug) Dickel of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Eric (Laura) Marzen of Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren; twenty step-grandchildren; sister, Lois (Gary) Schammel; and brother, Wilbur (Betty) Hage of Lakefield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Helen; sisters, Doris and Ruby; brothers, Lorvin, Donald and Wilmer; and grandson, Drujak.

A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at Stacyville Cemetery in Stacyville, Iowa.

Audrey Mae Guritz, age 90, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, January 19, 2019 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.

Audrey was born on May 3, 1928 in Lansing Township, Minnesota to Emanuel and Lila (Larson) Barclay. She married Max Guritz on June 2, 1946 at the Oakland Midway Lutheran Church in Oakland, Minnesota. In her spare time, she liked playing bingo and watching the Minnesota Twins. Audrey enjoyed watching her family play softball. She loved country music and traveled to Branson and Nashville. She especially loved to spend time with her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Max; sons-in-law, Don Ruud, Pat McGuire, and Terry Olson; grandson, Jim Ruud; granddaughter, Jessica Slowinski; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert “Bob” and Alvina Barclay; Milo “Mike” and Ruby Barclay; Richard “Dick” and Norma Barclay.

Audrey is survived by her daughters and son-in-law: Judy McGuire, Austin, Minnesota; Jean and Roger Slowinski, Gretna Nebraska; Janet Olson, Albert Lea, Minnesota; son and daughter-in-law: Jerry and Marlis Guritz, Richfield, Minnesota; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23rd at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Reverend Madison Chelberg officiating. Charles Edgar Huston

Charles Edgar Huston, age 92 of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, January 19, 2019 at St. Marks Lutheran Home.

Charles Edgar Huston was born November 17, 1926 on the family homestead near Lyle, Minnesota to Charles and Emma Huston. The fourth of five children, Charles attended the local county school and then Lyle High School until the eighth grade. At the age of 17 he went to work for the Hormel Company. At age 19 he was drafted into the Army and served until the end of the war. He was honorably discharged December 13, 1946 and returned to work at Hormel where he remained until his retirement at the end of the strike in 1986. On October 20, 1951Charles was united in marriage to Margaret Cafourek at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Austin Minnesota and she blessed him with three children.

Charles loved fishing and hunting, especially pheasant hunting. He enjoyed his large garden and was especially proud of his rhubarb patch and his apple, plum and pear trees. He liked to travel but never wanted to stay gone for too long as he thought he always had to get back and mow the lawn. He was an active member of the VFW and American Legion Color Guard for over 45 years. He was a good union man and enjoyed visiting old friends in rest homes in the local area.

Survivors include his son, Lynn (Bev) Huston; daughter, Sheila (Gary) Dickman; daughter, Brenda (Orin) Krause, Grandchildren David (Marlene LeBarron) Huston, Jenni (Scott) Van Benschoten, Gabe Dickman, Michael (Laura Seid) Dickman, Angela Bailey, Nathan Bailey and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, his loving wife, Margaret, and his mother and father-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at Crane Community Chapel with the Reverend Dale Christiansen officiating. Interment will be in Woodbury Cemetery. Military honors will preformed by Austin Post #91, American Legion and Olaf B. Damm Post #1216 V.F.W. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and on Thursday for one hour before the service at the church.

William H.N. Van Winkle

At his residence on Franklin street, in this city, suddenly, Friday morning, June 14, William H.N. Van Winkle, aged 76 years.

He did not feel well when he first got up and lay down again. when his wife went to call him a little later she found him dead.

Mr. VanWinkle came to this county with his brother-in-law, William A. Woodson, in 1857. They drove 600 miles with horses and ox teams, settling immediately south of Austin, which then contained but a few rude dwellings. He has since resided on the farm which he first took, until a few years ago when he moved into the city.

He leaves a widow and two daughters, Mrs. R.C. Allen and Mrs. W.H. Exelby.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. S. N. McAdoo, were held at the family resident on Sunday afternoon.

He was one of the pioneers, widely known and highly regarded and will be greatly missed.

Charlotte Mae (Ecklin) Himmler

Obituary for Charlotte Mae Himmler

Charlotte Mae Ecklin Himmler, age 82 of Austin passed away on January 21, 2019 with her husband Bill at her side.

Charlotte was born July 17, 1936 to Wellington and Mary Ecklin in Atlantic, Iowa; she was the youngest of six children. Her mother passed away when Charlotte was 15 and soon after, she moved to Austin, MN to live with her older brother John. She graduated from Austin High School in 1954 and met Victor William “Bill” Himmler at an Austin bowling alley.

Bill and Charlotte were married August 27, 1955. They moved to West Des Moines, Iowa, after Bill graduated from Dana College; they adopted two sons, Kurt and Bruno. After spending a few years caring for her young boys at home in Ottumwa, IA and Sioux Falls, SD, Charlotte began working as a secretary at Good Samaritan Society. In 1990, Bill and Charlotte moved to Independence, KY where they lived until 2018.

In Kentucky, Charlotte worked at Highland Crossing until she retired in 2000. Charlotte was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Florence, KY. She sang with Sweet Adelines during her time in South Dakota.

She was a very loving mother and grandmother; family meant everything to her. Charlotte and Bill returned to their roots settling in at Cedars of Austin in July 2018.

Charlotte is survived by her husband, Bill, sons Kurt Himmler (Honolulu, HI) and Bruno (Mary) Himmler (Ketchikan, AK), grandchildren Michelle (Drew) Kelley (Clinton, IA), Michael Leonard (Chicago, IL), William Himmler (Vermillion, SD), Daniel Himmler (East Rutherford, NJ) and great-grandchildren Owen and Dexter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings John, Dale, Sylvia, Leona and June. Charlotte was a kind soul who spread love and good cheer to all she met. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Dana J. Bright, age 55 of Austin, Minnesota, died at his home on Wednesday, January 23, 2019.

Dana was born January 2, 1964 in Columbus, Ohio. He was raised by his mother Janis (Wilson) and Robert Haugland. He graduated from High School in 1982. Dana married Kari Burgdorf on September 28, 2001 in Waseca, Minnesota. He worked at All American Foods in Waseca for over 20 years until his illness.

Dana liked to go fishing and camping and enjoyed listening to hard rock music while throwing back some beers with family and friends. He loved those Vikings.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Janis Haugland and his son, Alex Jay Bright.

Dana is survived by his wife, Kari Bright, Austin, Minnesota; sons, Dillon, Austin, and Jacob Bright all of Austin, Minnesota; step-son, Brandon Burgdorf, Owatonna, Minnesota; Cody Burgdorf, Austin, Minnesota who was like a step-son to Dana, and father, Robert Haugland, Phoenix, Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 26th at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel with The Reverend Shari Mason officiating. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Saturday one hour before the service.

Sharon Kay (Rust, Machacek) McCormack

OBITUARY--

Sharon K. McCormack, age 70 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, January 25, 2019 at her home in Austin.

Sharon Kay Rust was born to John William and Wilma Gertrude (Edwards) Rust on November 28, 1948, in Endicott, New York. Her family moved to Rochester, Minnesota, in 1957. She attended John Marshall High School in Rochester, graduating in 1966. After graduation, Sharon worked for a short time as a telephone operator.

On July 13, 1968, she married Lewis “Mac” McCormack in Rochester, Minnesota. Together the couple was blessed with 2 children, Jeff and Michele. After her marriage to Mac, the family lived in Rochester, Minnesota followed by Antioch, California, finally moving to Austin in the late 1970’s when Mac was transferred. While raising her family, Sharon did in home day care and later became a bailiff for Mower County.

Mac passed away on October 10, 2002.

On January 5, 2012, Sharon married Rex Machacek in Rochester, Minnesota. Her greatest joy was her family. She enjoyed fishing and the annual family trip to Ruth Lake. Sharon was an avid scrapbooker and a talented painter of ceramics. She also enjoyed square dancing in her younger years and became a beautiful quilter in the past several years. Her dog, Cali was a faithful companion. She visited Disney World over 30 times, “The Happiest Place on Earth.” Sharon will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her husband, Rex Machacek of Austin, Minnesota; children, Jeff (Aimee) McCormack of Austin, Minnesota, Michele (Matt) Adams of Zimmerman, Minnesota; six grandchildren: Jessica McCormack, Ryan McCormack, Jordyn McCormack, Mallory (Cody) Christ, Marit Adams, Noah Adams; sister, Debbie (Steve) Helgerson of Chatfield, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Keith Rysted of Hudson, Florida; and many nieces; Rex’s family, two daughters, Lynn (Brian) Klapperick of Austin, Minnesota, Kelly (Pat) Hansen of Apple Valley, Minnesota; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Wilma Rust; her first husband, “Mac”; and her sister, Sandy Rysted.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2019, at First United Methodist Church in Austin with Rev. Dennis Tamke officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:00(Noon) - 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, at a later date.

Michael Bobb Cummins, age 66, Fort Myers, Florida, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2019, surrounded by his loving family, at Health Park - Hope Hospice - Fort Myers, Florida.

Mike was born in Austin, Minnesota on February 11, 1952. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Bobb Duffy Cummins, and his mother, Marjorie Shaw Cummins, also of Austin, Minnesota.

Michael is survived by his wife, Shelley T. Cummins (Williams), son, Tate J. Cummins (Kris), daughter Jenna M. Hoffman (Adam), and daughter Molly F. Schnagl (Greg). Mike is also survived by his beloved sisters, Dianne Shaw-Cummins, Pam Letourneau (Jack), Patti Christensen, Lindy Rider (Al), and Cindy Jewison (Greg). Michael deeply loved each and every one of his amazing nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mike and Shelley were married in Austin, Minnesota on April 22, 1976, and were again re-married in 2012 in Fort Myers, Florida - a grand total of 39 years. Mike’s incredible grandchildren include: Thomas and Megan (Molly and Greg); Ava and Brooklyn (Tate and Kris); Lincoln, Lucia and Londyn (Jenna and Adam).

Mike joined the USMC in 1972 and served for 8 years, reaching the rank of Sgt. as an Intel Specialist. Mike served on several overseas assignments, including Tunis, Tunisia, and Tel Aviv, Israel, which is where he met his wife, Shelley. He and Shelley have kept in touch with some of their Marine Corp friends that he served with while in Tel Aviv. Semper Fi. After Mike’s honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in 1979, Mike held positions at some amazing companies, including Vista International Packaging, Inc., TW Kutter, Inc., and Packaging Concepts & Materials. He most recently retired on June 1, 2018, as National Accounts Manager at Kalle, USA, where he had worked for 15 years.

Mike was an avid golfer, an excellent pool shark, and an exceptional bowler (he achieved one perfect game, a 300). His true love, however, was, of course, baseball. As either a player, as a Legion coach, or as a fan in the stands watching his son, son-in-law or grandson play . . . the game of baseball was his true passion. Michael graduated from Austin High School in 1970 and signed as a left-handed pitcher with the MN Twins (Sarasota, Florida). In Fort Myers, he loved to follow the local news to see how the ball players at Canterbury School were doing.

A memorial service will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota, on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 1:30 pm. Prior to the service, a greeting area to welcome friends and family will begin at 12:30 pm. After the service concludes, please join us for a Celebration of Mike’s Life at the Eagles Club in Austin, Minnesota, beginning at approximately 3:00 pm.

Robert Atle Hyland, Sr., 85 of rural Austin, Minnesota, passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.

Robert was born April 25, 1933 in Austin, Minnesota to Jens and Esther (Smith) Hyland. He served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict, and was proud to have earned his “Senior Wings”. On April 8, 1956, Bob married Irene Bly at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He worked as a Master Mechanic for Weyerhaeuser, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post #91. Bob enjoyed baseball and football, deer hunting, mechanic work, horses, farming and riding his John Deere lawnmower. Bob believed in giving back. He was proud of “giving back” by donating over 32 gallons of blood to the Red Cross, which he began during his military duty.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Milo and Myron and an infant brother; brothers-in-law, Arleigh Anthonisen and Vernon Vold.

Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene Hyland of Austin; children, Robert (Karen) Hyland, Jr. of Dexter, Della (Kevin) Whalen of LeRoy, Roger (Toni) Hyland of Blooming Prairie, Kathy Hyland of Austin, Theresa Hyland (John Lucking) of Isle, Minnesota, LuAnn (Jacob) Hyland-Albee of Marshall, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren, Erik (Casey) Hyland of Rochester, David Whalen of Rochester, Patrick (Angela) Whalen of Austin, Joshua Whalen of LeRoy, Phillip Whalen of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Jake Hyland of Blooming Prairie, Jackie Hyland of Blooming Prairie, Tia Hyland of Brainerd, Minnesota, Hunter Hyland-Lucking of Isle, Minnesota, Alexandre Hyland of Minneapolis and Oliver Albee of Marshall, Minnesota; great grandchildren, Adeline Hyland of Rochester, Kaylin, Kane and Killian Whalen of Austin; sisters, Betty Vold of Lake Mills, Iowa and Esther Anthonisen of Austin; sisters-in-law, Helen Hyland of Austin and Ernestine Hyland of Florida; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 28th at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Reverend Mark Niethammer officiating. Austin Post #91 American Legion and Olaf B. Damm Post #1216 V.F.W. are in charge of Military honors. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday one hour before the service.

Cora "Colleen" Engelmann

1944-2019

Colleen Engelmann, 74, lawyer, philanthropist and entrepreneur, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, following a lengthy illness.

Cora Colleen Engelmann was born on Feb. 28, 1944. She graduated from Austin High School in 1962. She was a Classics scholar at the University of Minnesota, where she earned a degree in Greek and Latin. After receiving her law degree from the University of Santa Clara, she served as a corporate attorney for several major technology companies in Northern California. She later established her own legal services practice, Virtual Lawyer, at a time online commerce was beginning to emerge.

Colleen loved her ranch in Northern California, her many dogs, and enthusiastically supported a variety of conservation and preservation organizations. She enjoyed being a volunteer and docent for a diverse array of naturalist groups.

She leaves to cherish her memory three siblings, Michael Engelmann, Julie Wacker and Mary Murphy; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Stanley Engelmann; her mother, Delores Barnett; her stepfather, James Barnett; and brother, Larry Engelmann.

Funeral arrangements are private.

Nancy Elaine Haskin

1952-2019

Nancy Elaine Haskin, 66, left this life and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019.

She was born on Sept. 10, 1952, in Austin, Minnesota.

Nancy had a lifelong career with the Austin Public School District. She worked in many various capacities and retired as an administrative assistant. She moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, in 2007. She loved the Lord and had a heart for service. She was on the First Impressions Team at Calvary Baptist Church and greeted thousands of people with her beautiful smile. She had a way of making everyone feel welcomed.

She enjoyed gardening, bingo, bunco, Life Group, going out to eat with the neighbors, motorcycle riding and spending time with her family. She loved to color mandalas. She treasured spending time with her nephews and nieces and their children. She was a past member of the Havasu Art Guild.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Mabel Stelter.

She is survived by her sister, Sherry Broecher; nieces, Gina Atchison (Ryan) and Jessie Freitag (Brad); great-nephew, Curtis Wilson (Chey); great-nieces, Nicole Wilson (Chad), Alexis Gordon (Zach) and Brianna Prenosil; great-great-nephew, Callen Wilson; great-great-nieces, Chloe Wilson, Mia Neitzel and Aria Walk; and her special lifelong best friend, Jeff Haskin (Terry).

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center’s Ruby Rupner Auditorium.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to cancer research.

Ethel Boger Haase

c1916-2018

Ethel Boger Haase, 101, died on Friday, November 23, 2018, in Stockton, California, where she lived for eight years.

Born in Canajoharie, New York, Ethel was six years old when her mother returned to Spring Valley, Minnesota, with her children.

Ethel graduated from high school in 1934 as the class valedictorian. In 1935, she married Stanley C. Haase. They made their home in Austin, Minnesota, and raised two daughters.

A dedicated homemaker, Ethel loved to cook, garden, sew and knit. She was always reading. Golf was her passion. She played constantly with friends, both on teams and in tournaments. As proof of her skill, she had a hole-in-one trophy. Ethel was also a competitive league bowler for many years. Bridge was her game. She, Stan and dear friends, Mel and Phylis Sando, had a card game going throughout their 60-plus year friendship.

Ethel worked in sales before pursuing a successful career as a reporter at the Austin Daily Heard newspaper. She supported the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Riverland Community College Theater, was an active Collector’s Club recording secretary and sang in the church choir. While attending art classes, Ethel became an amateur potter.

A lifetime goal was achieved when, at the age of 73, Ethel earned a degree, graduating with high distinction from the Austin Community College on May 27,1988.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by a brother; and by four sisters.

Ethel is survived by her daughter, Karen Haase Avaloz and her husband, Faustino, in St. Paul, Minnesota; daughter, Jane Haase Armstrong Bostwick and her husband, Maynard, in Stockton, California; two grandsons in St. Paul and four grandchildren in Stockton; nine great-grandchildren in Stockton; one great-great-grandchild in Europe; and nieces and nephew from her extended family that were special to her, Sue Beckel Sathre, Madelyn Thompson Betcher and James Stephen Farnsworth.

The burial will take place later this year at the Spring Valley, Minnesota, cemetery. Ethel will be home again, buried next to her husband.

Marilyn Elaine (Floen) Thorstenson

1935-2019

August 30, 1935 - January 28, 2019

Marilyn E. Thorstenson, age 83 of Adams, Minnesota passed away on Monday, January 28, 2019 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Marys Campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

Marilyn was born August 30, 1935 in Sacred Heart, Minnesota to Obert and Alice (Holum) Floen. She graduated from Battle Lake High School in 1953. Marilyn married Marlo Thorstenson on March 22, 1958 at the First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake, Minnesota. She was a legal secretary for seven years while living in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

After moving to Adams, she was an EMT for the Adams Ambulance Service, was a school bus driver and worked as the City Clerk for 24 years. Marilyn was a member of Little Cedar Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and served on the Church Council. She was a member of Prairie Visions since 1989 and she enjoyed music.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Obert and Alice Floen.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Marlo Thorstenson, Adams, MN; three sons, Mikel Thorstenson, Spring Valley, MN, Mark Thorstenson, Geneva, MN and Milo (Terri) Thorstenson, Clarks Grove, MN; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and seven step grandchildren; siblings, Doris Ferguson, Oklahoma City, OK, Verlin (Laural) Floen, Fergus Falls, MN and Eileen (Mark) Anderson, Waconia, MN; nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on February 8, 2019 at Little Cedar Lutheran Church with the Reverend Jeremy Johnson officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour before the service. Interment will be at Little Cedar Cemetery this spring.

Juanita May (Pieper, Gehring) Young

1946-2019

Juanita M. Young, age 72 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Monday, January 28, 2019 at Prairie Manor Care Center in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota.

Juanita May Pieper was born on October 18, 1946, in Austin, Minnesota to Vincent Sr. and Viola (Hanson) Pieper. She attended Austin Schools and graduated from Rose Creek High School in 1964.

On November 22, 1986, Juanita was united in marriage to Robert Gehring at Crane Community Chapel in Austin. Robert died November 11, 2002. She worked for Hormel Foods in Austin for 25 years, retiring in 1989.

On May 21, 2007, Juanita married Larry Young at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Austin. Larry passed away January 8, 2010. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, DAV, Crane Community Chapel in Austin, and was an Austin Mayo Clinic Hospice volunteer and a Crime Victims Resource Center volunteer. Juanita liked to travel, read, paint, embroidery, and later in life learned to quilt. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her three brothers, Vincent (Carol) Pieper, Jr. of Austin, MN, Lawrence Pieper of Austin, MN, Louis (Nancy) Pieper of Vista, CA; five step-children, Scharrel (Mike) Krause of Minneapolis, MN, Linda (Steve) Wobschall of Arkansas, Randy (Ann) Gehring of Ottumwa, IA, Sandra (Mike) Smith of Janesville, WI, Jeff Gehring of Minnesota; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent Sr. and Viola Pieper; husband, Robert Gehring; husband, Larry Young; sister in infancy, Laverna; and sister-in-law, Kathy Pieper.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Crane Community Chapel in Austin with Pastor Dale Christiansen officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Cedar City Cemetery, rural Austin, MN in the spring. Memorials can be directed to recipient of donor’s choice. Services are prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin.

Margaret Kathyrn (Hickey) Streightiff

1936-2019

Margaret Kathryn (Hickey) Streightiff, 82, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Field Crest Nursing Home in Hayfield, Minnesota.

Margaret was born on a farm Dec. 3, 1936, in Mason City, Iowa, to Sylvester and Kathryn (Cahalan) Hickey. She received her education by attending country schools, Adams Catholic School in Adams, Minnesota, and graduated high school in LeRoy, Minnesota.

On August 9, 1958, Margaret was united in marriage to Louis Streightiff at St. Finbarr's Catholic Church, Grand Meadow, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with five children. They made their home in Brownsdale, Minnesota, until 2016 when Margaret moved to Austin, Minnesota.

As a young lady, Margaret was a telephone operator in Mason City, Iowa and Austin, Minnesota. While raising her children Margaret worked alongside Louie at Countryside Farm Supply as a bookkeeper. Later in life, Margaret started a second career at Shopko, in Austin, Minnesota.

Margaret was a devoted Catholic belonging to the Lady of Loretta, Brownsdale, for numerous years and then Scared Heart, Hayfield, MN. She always had a love for reading and prior to moving to Austin volunteering at the Brownsdale library. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, a Red Hatter and was on a bowling league for numerous years. Margaret had several hobbies including ceramics, cross-stitching, crocheting, gardening, and cooking. She is well known for her salads! Her potato, orange Jell-O, and pasta salads were always amazing.

Margaret is survived by her five children, Dan Streightiff, Dodge Center, MN, Deb (Larry) Sherman, Grand Rapids, MN, David Streightiff, White Bear Lake, MN, Doug (Kris) Streightiff, Sargent, MN, and Darcy (Jim) Richardson, Grand Meadow, MN; eight grandchildren, Zach (Kari) Sherman, Brandon (Sara) Sherman, Koby (Pat) Broking, Molly (Alex) Hohenstein, Sydney Richardson, Drew Streightiff, Wyatt Richardson and Maggie Streightiff; 4+ great-grandchildren, Erika and Kemper Sherman, Bryson and Baya Broking, and baby Hohenstein. Also surviving are two brothers, James (Donna) Hickey and Charles (Tracey) Hickey and three sisters-in-law, Alma Hickey, Rosie Hickey and Ione Streightiff.

Preceding Margaret in death were her husband Louis, parents Sy and Kathryn Hickey, parents-in-law Sam and Margaret Streightiff, a brother Gene Hickey, two brothers-in-law Frank and Vernon Streightiff, sister-in-law Arlene Streightiff, and a niece Becky Snow. Margaret will lovingly always be remembered by her family as Gram-Cracker.

Visitation will be at Czaplewski Family Funeral Home 501 2nd Street NW from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 29th, and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

The Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 ~ 2nd Street NE in Hayfield, MN with Father Thomas Niehaus celebrating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Hayfield, MN following mass.

Robert Joseph "Bob" McCarville

1942-2019

November 21, 1942 -- January 26, 2019 (age 76)

Robert “Bob” McCarville Sr. passed away on January 26, 2019 peacefully in his sleep at home in LeRoy, MN.

Visitation will be Wed. January 30, 2019 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral home, Cresco, Ia from 4pm until 7pm. Church service will be Thurs. January 31, 2019 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Lourdes, Ia at 10:30 am with visitation 1 hour prior to service.

Robert Joseph McCarville Sr. was born Nov. 21, 1942 to Athanasius Augustus and Clara (O’Donnell) McCarville and raised in rural Lourdes. Bob attended school in Lourdes, Elma and graduated from Notre Dame High School in Cresco, Ia in 1960. He participated in basketball where he was known as “Jump Shot Bob.” After high school, Bob briefly attended Winona State in Minnesota before returning to the family farm where he resided for 62 years until relocating to Leroy, MN.

Bob was united in marriage to Linda Kaderabek on April 28, 1962. To this union, six children were born. They later parted ways and Bob married Shirley (Kruse) Beck on Dec. 29, 2004.

Bob worked hard his entire life. In addition to farming, Bob hauled milk (by cans), worked at Oliver’s in Charles City, Ia and Sara Lee in New Hampton, Ia. He graduated truck driving school at NICC in Calmar, Iowa, and worked at Featherlite in Cresco, IA. He ended his career by semi-retiring with the job he loved the best, driving grain truck for Roe Farms of rural LeRoy, Mn. Bob felt extremely valued and appreciated. Roe Farms always took good care of him.

In his spare time, Bob loved woodworking, mowing lawn, gardening and most of all, spending time with his family and extended family. He loved attending events of all his grandkids, step-grandkids, great-grandkids and step-great-grandkids. One of his favorite past-times was watching his grandson Jacob play baseball and attending as many games as possible.

Bob is survived by Shirley, his wife of 15 years. One sister, Ellen (Wayne) Frantzen of Maquoketa, Ia.

Six children, Lori (Mike) McConnell of Cresco, IA, Robert (special friend Fabricio) McCarville Jr. of Miami, Florida, Lisa (Win) Peter of Mason City, IA, David (Candi) McCarville, Dubuque, IA, Susan (Roger) Meyer, Decorah, IA and Jennifer (Grant) Kellogg of Cedar Rapids, Ia.

Also extended family, Brad (Ashley) Beck, Cresco, Ia, Jody (Dena Strain) Beck of Pine Island, MN, Marty (Sam) Beck of Lime Springs, Iowa, and Brad’s children, Zach and Cody Beck, and Marty’s children, Brychan, Piper and Kanon.

He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Emily (Evan) Freese, Jesse (Kasey Bruns) McConnell, Jacob Peter (Carli Cook), Evan (Shana) Meyer, Elise (Phil) Linn, Payton, Riley and David McCarville, Kiera and Kaine Kellogg. Great Grandchildren Caleb and Owen Meyer, Aaron Linn, Axel Freese and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Athanasius and Clara, two brothers, Charles and Thomas, and two sisters, Elizabeth (Liz) and Mary Margaret (in infancy).

Bob’s sense of humor was well known and helped carry both himself and family during the last year of his life. Despite numerous visits to the doctors at Mayo Clinic for heart failure and recently diagnosed lung cancer, Bob remained both optimistic and humble to the very end.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Bob McCarville Family.
