Ashton Debra May
(June 11, 1987 - September 16, 2012)

Ashton Debra May, age 25, of Adams, Minnesota, died Sunday, September 16, 2012 at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.

Ashton was born June 11, 1987, in Austin, Minnesota, to Mark and Rosanne (Kiefer) May. Ashton was the proud oldest sister to Maggie, Christopher, Alan, and Elizabeth, goddaughter of Eddie May and Debra Lewison, and godmother to Alexis Smith and Emma Ashton Lewison.

Ashton attended Sacred Heart Elementary School in Adams, and graduated from Southland High School in 2006. While in school, Ashton excelled in academics as well as music, being an accomplished pianist and violinist and played trumpet in the pep band. A gifted athlete in volleyball, basketball, and track and field, Ashton earned all conference honors in all three sports and was a five year state qualifier and medalist in track and field in nine events.

Interest in pursuing her track and field career led Ashton to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse where she excelled as a four-year member of the women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams. There she became a 10-time All-American. Ashton holds three UWL school records, tying the indoor long jump in addition to holding records in the 4x100 and 4X200 relays. This fall “Miss May” began her dream job as a teacher - as the new eighth grade math and social studies teacher at Holmen Middle School in Holmen, Wisconsin, and spent two wonderful weeks with her students in the classroom. She continued her involvement in athletics by coaching the middle school volleyball team and was entering her third year as an assistant coach for UWL women’s track and field team.

In her 25 years, Ashton accomplished much. Yet her greatest joys came from spending time with her family, attending their many athletic events, and being a part of the large May and Kiefer families, rarely missing family events.

Adams woman dies from crash injuries

  The Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

ADAMS — An Adams woman died from injuries she suffered during a car crash near Adams when her car collided with a semi truck on Saturday.

Ashton May, 25, was transported by a Mayo Clinic helicopter to Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, where she died Sunday, according to Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi. The car was traveling north on 660th Avenue about 3:50 p.m., went off the road, then came back onto the road and into oncoming traffic when it hit a southbound-traveling semi that was hauling grain, according to the sheriff's report.

Ambulance and fire crews worked on May at the scene before she was transported to Saint Marys, Amazi said.

The driver of the semi, from rural Adams, was not hurt.

Speed was not a factor, and the investigation will continue, Amazi said.

Funeral services are scheduled 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams, with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating. Visitation is 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-10 a.m. at Adams Funeral Home.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

NEWS--

Adams, Austin mourn crash victim

Ashton May dies Sunday, 1 other injured

Monday is a difficult day for people from Adams, Austin, and for anyone who knew Ashton May.

May, 25, of Adams, died Sunday after her car struck a semi truck north of Adams at about 3:50 p.m. Saturday. According to the Mower County Sheriff’s report, May went into the ditch along 660th Avenue and County Road 7, came back onto the road and struck the semi. The semi driver, Patrick Thome of rural Adams, was uninjured.

A motorcycle rider, Adam Kiefer, 19, who did not have time to stop for the accident laid his bike down and was injured. Kiefer’s sister, Tina, who was on scene, said Kiefer fractured his right wrist, received severe road rash and needs shoulder surgery. The Kiefers are cousins to May.

The Mayo 1 helicopter took May to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester where she died. The Mower County Sheriff’s department is investigating the cause of the accident. “She will be missed in a lot of ways, not just from work,” said Kim Underwood, Austin Parks and Recreation director.

Underwood worked with May for six summers at parks and rec, and the main thing she and others say about May is how well she got along with everybody — from kids to grandparents. May was a 10-time all-American track star at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, said Valerie Pitzen, who worked closely with May.

Pitzen was too distraught as of Monday morning to talk much about May. The two were very close. “They just don’t come any better,” was all she said. Underwood agrees. “The kid was awesome, that’s all I can say about her,” she said.

Underwood’s children always looked for May when they went into the parks and rec office. May was simply good with people, Underwood said. “She got along great with all ages,” she added.

Students, athletes and coaches at UW-La Crosse are devastated, said Pat Healy, who coached May at that college. Ashton was entering her third year as an assistant track coach at La Crosse, as well.

“Ashton was probably one of the most positive people I’ve ever been around,” Healy said, who noted how May was excited to teach middle-schoolers and coach volleyball, as well. May currently holds four school records at La Crosse. She competed in triple jump, long jump and sprint relays. With her absence, Healy said, the team is motivated to run even harder. “The only thing I can say is that the loss of Ashton leaves a very big hole in our team,” Healy said.

A funeral for May will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams. There will be a 3 to 7 p.m. rosary service on Friday at Adams Funeral Home. Another visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Correction: A previous version of this report stated May’s car collided “head-on” with the semi. Police have not confirmed what the orientation of the car was when the crash occurred.

Dorothy Ann (Swoboda,Beckel) Herzog

1921-2012

Dorothy Ann (Swoboda) Herzog, 90, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully during the evening of Sept. 12, 2012, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

Dorothy was born to Dewey and Marie Swoboda in Jordan, Minnesota, on December 30, 1921. She spent her early elementary school years in Waseca, Minnesota. Dorothy and her family then moved to Austin, where she attended sixth grade at Lincoln School. She graduated from Austin High School in 1940 and was active on the yearbook and school newspaper. After high school, Mom took a job in the office at George A. Hormel Company working as a secretary. Even to this day, she still liked to demonstrate her “shorthand” skills, and talk about what a quick typist she was. Mom worked in the Hormel office for eight years until her marriage to Robert Herzog.

Dorothy’s first marriage was to Donald Beckel in August 1944. Donald was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, and was killed in action on Feb. 19, 1945, only six months after their wedding.

She met the love of her life, Robert, while attending a dance at the Terp. Dorothy and Robert were married at Queen of Angels Catholic Church on April 23, 1948. To this union two children were born, William “Bill” and Suzanne. Dorothy and Bob were married 59 years and lived in their home for 52 years. Dorothy moved to Chauncey Apartments in 2004 and has lived at Sacred Heart Care Center since 2008. While at Sacred Heart, Dorothy had the privilege of having her granddaughter, Jacqueline, be her day shift registered nurse.

Dorothy was known for her beautiful flowers and lawn. She was dedicated to keeping her house looking the prettiest on the block, and took great pride in the fact that people would stop in front of her house and compliment her on its beauty. The same great detail to perfection was given to her husband and children. She was a wiz in the kitchen and her meals were always tasty. She loved to clean; the roar of her vacuum was known to wake the family up frequently. Even during her time at Sacred Heart, she was always picking up after people. The family enjoyed their annual fishing vacations at Hollywood Inn on Lower Whitefish Lake. Dorothy could sit in the boat fishing for hours, and would love it every time the family had to use the net to haul in a big one.

She adored animals, and could have been named the female version of St. Francis of Assisi. She took in countless stray cats and rescued many lost dogs, caring for them at her home until she could find their owners.

Dorothy will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

Survivors include her children, Bill and Barb Herzog of Weatherby Lake, Mo., and Suzanne and Jerry McCarthy of Austin; grandchildren, Sam and Jessica Herzog, Jake and Erica Herzog, of Kansas, Edward Mjoen and Jacqueline and Joe Sucha of Austin; great-grandchildren, Mason and Zander Herzog, Macy Herzog of Kansas, Ethan Knox and Skye Anderley of Austin; brother in-law and sisters-in-law, Dick and Kathleen Herzog, Champlin, Minn., Nina Swoboda, Austin, and JoAnn Anderson, Florida.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob in 2007; brother, Donald Swoboda; brothers-in-law, Donald Herzog, Tom Anderson, and Phil Hope; sisters-in-law, Mary Hope and Donna Herzog; many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, at Sacred Heart Care Center with Father Jim Steffes officiating. Friends may call from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour before the service at the care center on Saturday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
