Wisconsin to town Waltham, Minnesota, where they have since lived. All who
knew this could only respect and esteem him; he was an earnest Christian,
and a prominent member of Lutheran Trinity church. With him his church has
lost one of her most ardent and ever generous supporters. Although he had
suffered from some lighter ills for some time, no one expected his early
demise. While in the field on Friday, April 17th, and about to return home
before a rain shower, he was struck and probably instantly killed by
lightning. With the exception of a few very slight marks his body was
outwardly uninjured, whereas his hat was almost totally shattered.
On Sunday afternoon, April 19th, the funeral was held
from Trinity church. It is said by many to have been the largest funeral
ever witnessed in this vicinity, the train being fully half a mile long,
while many had assembled at the church before it arrived there. The
discourse for this occasion was based on Jeremiah 29:11.
The age of the deceased was 44 years 1 month and 22 days.
His widow and eight children, all minors, bemoan his sudden death. They
have the hearty and tender sympathy of all.

Maria E. Dillon 1873-1896
Died.
Mrs. Maria E. Dillon.
At the residence of her parents in this city, Wednesday
evening, April 22, 1896, Mrs. Maria E. Dillon, aged 23 years. Deceased
was the oldest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E.C. Dorr.
She was born in this city, April 3, 1873, and was reared
here. Her talent for music was very marked and she spent five years at
Sinsinawa Mound, Iowa, and one year at St. Joseph's Academy at St. Paul
in perfecting her education, giving special attention to musical training.
In August, 1894, she was married to Dr. R.H. Dillon of Fall
River, Massachusetts, whom she met while he attended state university at
Minneapolis. She spent most of the first year of her married life in this
city. Last September she went east with her husband to make their home in
Fall River, Massachusetts, where the doctor had entered upon the practice
of medicine.
After being there only a few weeks, Mrs. Dillon's health
commenced to fail and it was found necessary to come west again. Since
her return, her health never returned, in spite of the best medical aid
obtainable, and last Wednesday evening, death came as a relief to her
sufferings.
Funeral services were held at the residence Saturday
forenoon, conducted by Rev. C.D. Belden, assisted by Rev. A. Cressey. There
was a very large company of sorrowing friends present. The W.R.C., the
Degree of Honor, and the O.E.S. attended as organizations. McIntyre Post,
G.A.R. acted as escort to the funeral procession. Six of the intimate young
lady freinds of the deceased acted as honorary pall bearers. Interment was
at Oakwood.
The deceased was a most estimable young woman. Modest and
retiring in her ways, she endeared herself to all who knew her intimately.
She was the light of her home and of the large circle of her friends. We
extend our heartfelt sympathy to the sorrow stricken family and relatives.

John George Hormel 1830-1896
7-24-1830 -- 5-06-1896
#1:
Passed Away -
In another column will be found the death notice and
biographical sketch of the late J.G. Hormel of this city. In his demise
Austin has lost one of her best citizens, and the destiny of a most active,
honorable and useful life has been fullfilled, rounded out by every virtue
that characterises true manhood and uprightness.
We wish to bow in reverence in the remembrance of the dear
father who for as many years has been the strong and kindly support of home
circle which now is so suddenly broken. Workds are feeble in expressing
the emotions of the human heart on such as occasion as this.
None, but those who here experienced the sad parting of
a loyal father can ever know what it means. We deeply sympathize with
the family and friends in this trying ordeal.

#2:
Obituary, John George Hormel
John George Hormel was born in Germany, near Frankfort
on the Main, July 24, 1830. At four years of age he came with his parents
to Buffalo, New York, an experience which he distinctly remembered in after
life; a part of the trip being accomplished on the first railway train
ever run between Albany and Schenectady.
In 1856, he was married in Buffalo to Miss Susie Decker,
a life union which was crowned with the rarest harmony and blessing. In
1865 he removed with his wife and four children to Toledo, Ohio, where he
engaged in the tannery busines under the firm name of Hormel and Heyer,
until 1890, when he retired. But his energetic spirit chaffed under
severence from business interests, and in July 1895, at the urgent
solicitation of his family, he removed to Austin, Minnesota, the he
might enjoy the activity of business with his sons without bearing its
cares and responsiblities.
Here he was so renewed in heath and strength that it
seemed as if his best and happiest years were yet before him, when he
should see the fruits of his life long consecration to home and family and
God.
But one week ago Wednesday night, April 29, he was taken
with severe chills, followed by la Grippe and pneumonia. From this he
sank rapidly, and Wednesday morning quietly breathed his last, as 5:30,
surrounded by most of his family.
Mr. Hormel was a life-long member of the German Reformed
Church, an earnest, consistent christian. His disposition was a peculiarly
happy one -- a blending of gentleness and firmness, contentment and
ambition. In business he was both conservative and energetic. In his
home he was remarkable for his ingenious ability of entering into and
appreciating the natural endowments of each one of his children, so as
to encourage and develop each along their own chosen line of life work.
No one was constrained or discouraged but each was trained regardless of
expense or self-sacrifice for what ever vocation they wished to enter.
Mr. Hormel's entire family consisted of twelve children,
two of whom died in early life. Five daughters and five sons remain with
their mother to mourn their loss. Miss Elisabeth Hormel, instructor of
art in Albert Lea College; Mrs. L.P. Fisher, of Toledo; Mrs. Franks, E.
Wells, of Fostoria; Miss Lottie, a kindergarten teacher, all present with
her mother in Austin; Miss Nellie, a teacher in the Toledo public schools.
Four of the sons, George A., Herman, John and Ben, are engaged in the
packing business in Austin; Rev. W. H. Hormel is pastor of central Pres.
church, of Austin and the Oakland Pres. church.
Mr. Hormel will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery,
Friday, May 8, 1896. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. at
the Central Presbyterian Church, by Dr. S.S. Cryor, of Albert Lea.
