Linda Irene Ottman 1951-2012
Linda Irene Ottman, 60, died unexpectedly at her home in Grand Meadow,
Minnesota, on June 17, 2012, while awaiting stem cell transplant for
lymphoma diagnosed in November 2011.
Linda, daughter of Marshall (Pete) and Burniece Ottman, Grand Meadow,
Minnesota, was born July 9, 1951, in LeRoy, Minnesota, and spent her
early years on a farm in Bennington Township south of Grand Meadow.
The family moved to Grand Meadow in 1958. Linda graduated 1969 from
Grand Meadow High School. Her first job was with the Nissner’s Store
at Miracle Mile in Rochester. She was then hired by Mayo Clinic and
was a 42-year employee of Mayo Clinic, most recently working in the
Computer Configuration Center.
Linda was one of the first EMTs for the Grand Meadow Ambulance Service.
Linda was an avid music enthusiast and loved many types of music. She sang
for a number of years with the LBJs (a trio that performed in the region).
She also sang with Second Edition out of Austin and until recently was the
choir director for the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church. Linda was a supporter
of bluegrass music, enjoyed jamming and performed regularly at bluegrass
festivals and churches with her family’s band, Cedar Valley Bluegrass.
Linda also helped with the Pete’s Pickin’ In the Pasture Sessions held
at the Ottman Barn on the western edge of Grand Meadow. Linda was a charter
member of the Southeast Minnesota Bluegrass Association. She also performed
at the Cowboy Church in Cherry Grove, Minn. Linda was the soloist for
numerous weddings and funerals.
Linda was a charter member of the Grand Meadow Lions Club. Linda
was noted for her sense of humor and pulling jokes on people. Linda
loved life, traveling, her family and her many friends, her cats,
Frank and Martha, and her Toyota convertible. She faced her cancer
with courage, fortitude and a positive outlook. She has left a legacy
of wonderful memories for her family, friends and the community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marshall and Burniece Ottman,
and two brothers, Claron Ottman and Leland Ottman and sister-in-law,
Peggy Ottman.
Linda is survived by one brother, Darrell Ottman (Barbara) of
Rochester; niece, Becky Gors (Dale Boggess) Waverly, Iowa; nephews,
Glen (Penny) Ottman, Ramona, Calif., Dale Ottman, Lakeside, Calif.,
Dean Ottman (Scott VanderMaten) Minneapolis, Eric (Lynn) Ottman,
Chatfield, Minn., and Jason (Mylene) Ottman, Grand Meadow, Minn., and
sister-in-Law, Colleen Ottman, Prior Lake, Minn.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 30 at 10:30 a.m.
at the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Friday, June 29
from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church and one hour prior
to the service on Saturday. A private burial will be held at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hindt Funeral Home of
Grand Meadow. Memorials are suggested to the family.

David Harrison Bent1867-1949
DAVID HARRISON BENT
David Bent, 82 year old retired farmer, was found dead
in his apartment on Broadway Monday morning December 26th. He had been
ailing for a couple of years and had suffered a fall recently.
David Harrison Bent was born August 7, 1867 in
Illinois. Mr. Bent married the former Edith Sprague of Etna November
1, 1899. She died in November, 1948. The couple lived near Chester, Iowa,
for years before moving to LeRoy.
He is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Thelma Speedy of
Mason City, Iowa and Mrs. Oliver Whiteside of LeRoy, two sons Roland of
LeRoy and Master Sergeant Wayne Bent stationed in Texas and two
grandchildren.
Rev. R.K. Fogal of the Presbyterian church conducted the
services in the Marta Funeral Home Wednesday, Dec. 28th at 2 PM. Interment
was in the LeRoy Cemetery.

Glenn Vernie Wells1886-1949
Glenn V. Wells
Glenn Vernie Wells was born August 11, 1886 at LeRoy,
Minnesota, and passed away at Sawtelle Veterans Hospital on December 29,
1949. He served his country as a Marine for several years before World
War I and re-enlisted as a Marine during that war.
He was a member of Eureka Lodge No. 75, AP & AM and was a
past Worshipful Master of this lodge. At the time of his passing he was
President of a Veterans Masonic Club at Los Angeles California.
He leaves to mourn his passing a son Robert Wells of Heron
Lake, Minnesota, and a daughter Laverne Wells of LeRoy, five grandchildren,
Karen Lee, Roberta, Nancy, Carol, and Richard Wells of Heron Lake, three
sisters Mrs. Frances McKnight of Altadena, California, Mrs Lura Lowe of
Marshall, Mn., and Mrs Jennie Roy of LeRoy, two brothers Roy John Wells
of Youngstown, Alberta, Canada and Clarence Wells of LeRoy, besides other
relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock
from the Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. R. K. Fogal. Interment was
made in the LeRoy Cemetery with Masonic burial services.

Myles W. Bendtsen 1925-2012
Myles W. Bendtsen, 87, of Rose Creek, Minnesota, died Friday, June 22,
2012, at Our House Memory Care in Austin, Minnesota.
Myles was born September 27, 1925, in Wagner, South Dakota, the second
of ten children to Ben and Anna (Reandeau) Bendtsen. When he was in the
seventh grade, Myles moved with his family to Hayfield and two years
later to Rose Creek. He graduated from Rose Creek High School in 1942
and attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City, Iowa. He maintained
a life-long passion for reading and learning.
Myles married Mary Ella Emery on April 4, 1948, at Queen of Angels
Catholic Church in Austin. For the remainder of their working years, they
farmed in Rose Creek. Myles also did construction work and enjoyed
woodworking and carving, drawing, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, playing
in basketball and bowling leagues, playing cards, gardening, and occasionally
trying his hand at cooking and baking. In his retirement years, he golfed
nearly every day. Myles loved a good joke and told many.
An active member of the community, Myles served as a member of the
Rose Creek and Southland school boards, as a 4-H leader, and for nine
years as a member of the Mower County Planning Commission, where he was
honored to vote for approval of the county's first wind energy project. He
was also an active member of St. Peter's Church in Rose Creek where he sang
in the choir and served for several years on the Parish Council, including
a term as president.
Above all, Myles took great pride in his family: six daughters, four
sons, 31 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary Bendtsen, Rose Creek;
children, Kathy Larson (Felix Lozano), St. Paul, Randy (Diane) Bendtsen,
Peoria, Ill., Brad (Lorrie) Bendtsen, Peoria, Ill., Denise (Tom) Lewison,
Rose Creek, Alane Bendtsen (Steve Searle), Owatonna, Les Bendtsen (Jim
Newstrom), Minneapolis, Mary (Ross) Johnson, Rochester, Melanie (Brian)
Worrall, Huron, S.D., Dean (Renae) Bendtsen, Rose Creek; siblings, Roma
Samuelson, Austin, Ramona Peters, Austin, Alan (Carole) Bendtsen, Madison,
Wis., DeWaldon (Trish) Bendtsen, Rochester, Kay (Curtis) Lewison, Adams,
Gary (Barb) Bendtsen, Elkton, Karen (Russell) Anderson, Rose Creek, Karol
(Jack) Blink, Rochester.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marcine; daughter,
Janel Gleason; grandson, Scotty.
Special thanks to Ken Kroupa, whose kindness and friendship added
greatly to Myles' last year. Also, we thank his devoted sisters and
sister-in-law who gave him much time and love. Thanks also to the staff
of Our House Memory Care, who never made him feel like a man with dementia
— only a man with friends.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Peter's
Catholic Church in Rose Creek, with Father Thomas Loomis officiating.
There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service today, June 25, at Mayer Funeral
Home, where friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friends may also call
one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be
in St. Peter's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Peter's Catholic
Church.

Archie P. Solyst1915-2012
Archie P. Solyst, 97, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Friday,
June 22, 2012, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.
Archie was born May 5, 1915, in Garden City, Iowa to Otto and
Aleta (Seglum) Solyst.
During World War II, Archie served honorably as an Army medic and
was involved in the transportation of German prisoners to the U.S.
Prisoner of War Camps. Archie and Judy settled down to raise their family
in Austin.
Archie worked at the Hormel Company for 45 years, with an interruption
for his United States Army Service and then retired at age 68, knowing most
of the employees on a first hand basis. He enjoyed playing golf and
horseshoe, and was a bit of a “ringer.” After retirement he dabbled in
painting, covering every inch of his basement and garage with his artistic
works. His true forte was writing and reading poetry to anyone who would
listen and even had a few poems published in the Hormel magazine.
Archie was a longtime member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church and the
American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Alvera “Judy” Solyst; children, Gary Solyst,
Kay Solyst, Susan Solyst, Janelle Blaser and Lorri Terpeney; grandchildren,
Ryan and Mark Solyst, Nicole and Scott Blaser; great grandchildren, Sara
Solyst and Ryan Johns; brother, Lovel Solyst; sister-in-law, Sharon Heikkla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jay and Donnie Solyst;
sisters, Onie Wyant and Gail Van Eaton; most of his friends.
Condolences may be sent to Kay Solyst, 1510 2nd Ave. SW, Austin, MN 55912.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012,
at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating.
Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American
Legion Post 91 and V.F.W. Post 1216.

Wendell Bruce Stoltz1951-2012
Wendell Bruce Stoltz, 61, of Austin, passed away peacefully on
Saturday evening, June 23, 2012, surrounded by his family at St. Marks
Care Center. He left this World the same day he came in. On June 23, 1951,
Wendell was born to Daniel and Fern (Matthiesen) Stoltz in Austin. He
graduated from Blooming Prairie High School. He enlisted in the Marine
Corp. for two years. After his honorable discharge, he came back home
and went to work at the Owatonna Canning Company.
In 1972, he married Nancy Iverson in Austin, and the couple later
divorced. In 1992, he went to work at Arnold Supply in Rochester and
retired on Jan. 1, 2011. Wendell enjoyed sports and was a dedicated
Vikings and Twins fan. He collected old music — record albums and such.
He really enjoyed socializing at Culver’s.
Survivors include: one son, Cole Stoltz of Owatonna and one daughter,
Leah (Scott) Lorence of Owatonna, seven grandchildren: Jesse, Whittney,
Sydney, Lathan, Isaac, Isaiah and Brayden, two brothers; Daniel (Pam)
Stoltz of Apple Valley, Larry Stoltz of Austin, three sisters: Marjorie
Grubbs of Arizona, Beverly Finholdt of Austin, and Sandra (Herman) Smidt
of Denver, and many other wonderful friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers,
Darrell, Richard, Kenneth and Marvin.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2012,
at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held on Tuesday
evening from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Worlein Funeral Home and one hour before
the service. Interment will be at Rush Lake Cemetery, Rush Lake, Iowa
on Thursday, June 28, 2012, at 3 p.m.
Memorials preferred to ALS Foundation. Military rites by American
Legion Post 91 and V.F.W. Post 1216. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin

Lowell August Brekke1939-2012
Lowell August Brekke, 73, of Austin, Minnesota, died at his home Sunday,
June 24, 2012.
Lowell was born April 29, 1939, in Hayfield, Minnesota, to Henry and
Amanda (Johnson) Brekke. He attended grade school in Sargeant, Minn. and
moved to Austin in 1950 where he received further schooling. He married
Kaye Schmidt and they later divorced. Lowell had a love for cars. He
started working at Midway Car Sales at an early age and managed gas
stations for the Fina Corp. in Austin and other towns. He collected
many cars over the years but his special liking was toward the Lincoln
Town Car, owning many over his lifetime. Lowell retired from the
Weyerhauser Corp (now International Paper) in 2004.
Lowell is survived by his sister Marlys (Richard) Trimble, Austin;
brother, Richard (Carol) Brekke, Sr., Austin; many nieces and nephews
who will surely miss “Uncle Ode.” Blessed be his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Henry Brekke,
Jr., who died in infancy, and special friend, Nancy Alm.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 29 at
Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Rev. William Odermann officiating.
Visitation will be at the mortuary for one hour before the service.

Lair V. DeSart 1938-2012
Lair V. DeSart was born April 17, 1938, in Austin, Minnesota. He graduated
from Austin High School in 1956 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956
to 1960. Lair was employed by IBM for 30 years, during which he spent three
years in Raleigh, N.C. and nine years in Harrison, N.Y. and Poughkeepsie,
N.Y. He came back to Rochester in 1978 and retired from his position as
resource planner in 1992.
Lair married Doris Dillon in 1982, and together they enjoyed traveling
and sharing a partnership through the every-day joys and trials of life.
After retiring from IBM, Lair worked part-time in jewelry sales for
nine years and most recently was employed by FTL Systems. He coached
youth baseball and basketball in New York and Rochester for more than
15 years. Lair enjoyed bowling and golfing and was a member of the Kasson
American Legion and Bethany United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; brother, Wesley (Shirley) of Austin;
sister, Joan Meyer (Bob) of Austin; three sons from his marriage to Lois
Newton, Jon (Taira) of Kalispell, Mont., Jay (Patty) of Spanish Fork, Utah
and James (Beth) of Savage, Minn.; one step-son, Jason Dillon of Rochester,
Minn.; one stepdaughter, Deb (Alan) Schroeder of Parker, Colo.; six
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by his parents, Virgil and Ila DeSart and sister, Jean (Jack) Riggs.
A celebration of life will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church
at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012, with the Rev. Dr. Wesley J. Gabel
officiating. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to
the service at the church on Thursday.

Viola Arlene (Weller) Carlson 1932-2012
Viola Arlene Carlson, 80, Austin
Viola Arlene Carlson, 80, died Sunday, June 24, 2012, at Our House
Memory Care in Austin, Minnesota, surrounded by her family. Viola passed
after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born February 14, 1932, to Eugene and Helen (Koch) Weller on the
farm near Dazey, North Dakota. Viola was the first born of a set of twins
born on a blustery Valentine’s Day. She weighed three pounds and her
identical twin sister weighed two pounds. The girls were nursed with an
eye dropper by their grandmother who was a mid-wife. She swaddled them
in blankets and put them in a roaster on top of the stove to keep them
warm. She was raised on the family farm near Dazey.
Viola attended school at Dazey and graduated in 1950. She was united
in marriage to Jerry Carlson on June 15, 1950. Jerry began his career in
the banking field. The Carlsons’ first son, Craig Dean, was born in 1951.
In 1954, they had their second son, Jeffrey Brian. Jerry continued working
in banking with Viola raising the boys. In 1960, they were blessed with
their first daughter, Candace Joanne, and again in 1963 with the birth
of their second daughter, Catherine Marie. The family was full circle
with two boys and two girls.
In 1968, Jerry landed a job in Minnesota and the couple moved their
family to Lindstrom, Minn., where Viola resided until 2008. She worked
for Plastic Products Inc. for 25 years, retiring in 1995.
Viola was a member of the Chisago Lake Evangelical Lutheran Church where
she brought up all her children in the Lutheran faith. She was active in
Bible Study, Circle and the Kitchen Community. In 2001, Viola was diagnosed
with early Alzheimer’s. She moved to Austin in 2008 to be near her first
daughter, Candy.
Viola was preceded in death by her husband Jerry and parents Eugene and
Helen Weller.
Viola is survived by her sons Craig (Carol) Carlson, Clifton, Va., and
Jeff (Deanne) Carlson, Brooklyn Park, Minn; daughters Candace (Lyn)
Carlson/Anderson, Austin, and Catherine (Greg) Lutz, Ramsey, Minn.;
grandson David Carlson, Virginia; granddaughters, Cari Carlson, Virginia,
Raelene and Caitlin Carlson, Brooklyn Park; brother Clarence (Doris) Weller,
Dazey; twin sister, Violet (Doug) Quick, Valley City, N.D.; several cousins
and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 2, 2012, at the
Chisago Lake Evangelical Lutheran Church, Center City, Minn. with the
Rev. Gary Garvey officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 1 at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary
in Austin from 3 to 5 p.m. The family prefers memorials to the Alzheimer’s
Association.

Stephen Radford(d: 1902)
Stephen Radford died at his home in Riceville, Iowa, Sunday morning,
January 12th of Bright's disease. He was one of the early settlers of this
section having located about four miles southeast from LeRoy in 1855 where
he resided until a few years ago when he and his family moved to Riceville.
The very sudden death of his wife on February 22, 1901 was a severe shock
to him. Three sons and five daughters survive. Many other relatives and
friends will miss this true and trusted man.
Interment will be at Riceville on Tuesday, January 14th.

Libbie G. Frizell (d:1900)
After a long and painful illness from cancer, Mrs. Libbie G. Frizell,
wife of S.B. Frizell died at home in Brownsdale Village, December 28, 1900
in the 46th year of her age.
She leaves a husband and three children to mourn her loss. Funeral
services were held in the Baptist Church Sunday, conducted by Rev. Treloar
of Austin. Her remains were taken to West Concord for burial.

Martha Nicholson 1836-1900
DIED -- At her home near the old town of LeRoy,
Minnesota, Thursday, February 8, 1900, Mrs. Martha Errington.
Martha Nicholson was born June 24, 1836 at County Latrum,
Ireland. In 1841 she came with her parents to Philadelphia, PA. from there
in 1861 to San Franscico where she married Henry Kirk. Two children were
born to this union, Jennie Melissa and Lillie Frances.
Soon after the death of her husband she came with her two
children to Delaware County, Iowa where on August 29, 1877 she married
William Errington, residing in Alamakee Co. until April 8, 1880 when they
came to Mitchell Couty, Iowa and in 1884 to LeRoy.
She leaves the husband and one daughter, Mrs Marion
Dalley as well as many friends to mourn her.

Samuel Hale 1819-1899
Died at his home near LeRoy Friday, February 10, 1899 of la grippe,
Mr. Samuel Hale, aged 79 years, three months, and thirteen days.
Mr. Hale was an old and respected citizen of LeRoy township, having
moved here with his family from Belvidere, Illinois, in 1856, his birth
place being England. His wife, four sons and two daughters survive him.
All of the children reside at the home except Mrs. D.C. Wood of Taopi, the
eldest daughter.
The deceased was an upright, affable friend and neighbor and was loved
and esteemed by all who knew him. He has been in feeble health for some
time and when stricken with la grippe, was unable to withstand the attack.
The sorrowing family and friends have our sympathy.

Mrs. V.B. Lincoln 1818-1898
Died at the home of her daughter, Mrs F.C. Mason in Oak Dale, Iowa,
Tuesday, April 26, 1898, Mrs. V.B. Lincoln, principally from paralysis
and old age, having reached the age of 79 years the 15th of December, 1897.
She is survived by one daughter and two sons, Mrs. F. C. Mason, Myron
Rumsey of Spring Valley, and Frank Rumsey. Funeral services were conducted
from the Baptist Church, of which she was a member, Thursday at 2 p.m.
where a host of warm friends gathered to pay their last respects to one
who had for years been known and loved by them as a kind neighbor and a
faithful friend.
The W.C.T.U., of which she was an interested member, attended in a
body, each leaving upon the casket a beautiful bouquet of white and green.
Loving hands had decorated the church with beautiful flowers, and the casket
strewn with floral emblems. Thus she was laid to rest in the LeRoy Cemetery, her earthly sufferings over.

Jacob Tiedemann c1814-1898
Jacob Tiedemann, who lived northwest of Elkton, died Monday April 4,
1898. He was nearly 84 years old. He was born in Hamburg, Germany, and
came to this country 23 years ago. He first lived in Goodhue County,
coming to Dexter about 20 years ago.
The widow and eight children survive. One daughter lives in Germany,
the rest are: Henry Tiedemann, of Goodhue Co., John, Fritz, and George
Tiedemann of Dexter, Harry Tiedemann of Marshall, Mrs. Anna Spreckels of
Elkton, and Mrs. Herman Moje of Dexter.
Funeral services were held in the Lutheran Church on Wednesday. Rev.
Schultz officiated.

Helen S. Wilder 1845-1897
The notice of the death of Miss Helen S. Wilder at Sun Prairie,
Wisconsin on November 29, 1897 was from the Sun Prairie Countryman
we learn the particulars of her death. She died after a brief illness
and death came as a great shock to her many friends with whom she had
mingled.
She was born in the town of Bristol, October 14, 1845, but passed
the larger part of her kindly and useful life in Sun Prairie and the
area. She was a faithful member of the M.E. Church to which she was
most consistantly giving her most earnest efforts. She taught for
several years in Brownsville, Minnesota. and vacinity. A widowed
mother and six brothers and sisters survive, two of the brothers
being Howard M. Wilder and E. W. Wilder of Mower Co., Minnesota.

Lizzie Owens 1882-1898
DIED: December 29, 1898, at 3 o'clock in the morning, Miss Lizzie
Owens of Racine, beloved daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Owens.
Funeral of the deceased was held in the Congregational church at
Stewartville December 30th, Rev. Lodwick officiating.
Lizzie was born March 14, 1882. She was a gracious person and with
her kindly ways and steadfast character she would have grown into womanhood
an estimable person who would have ever been able in filling any position
likened to her nature, with faithful care.
To her parents and relatives we extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy.

Edith E. McKee 1862-1897
Died, at her home in LeRoy village, Thursday, December 9, 1897, Mrs.
Edith E. McKee, wife of Harry G. McKee.
Miss Edith Bowen was born at Penyan, April 4, 1862 was married to
H.G. McKee December 25, 1880 at LeRoy having come to this place with
her mother some years previous. Their union was a happy one and was
blessed with three daughters who now mourn the loss of a kind, gentle,
and loving mother.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at ten o'clock at the Baptist
Church, where she had been the organist for years. Loving hands had
shrouded the organ in black and decorated the church with potted plants
and beautiful floral emblems covered the casket, among which a lyre of
smilax and white roses seemed a fitting tribute. Miss Lizzie Lamb, an
only sister of the deceased, arrived from Pennsylvania for the funeral.
The stricken husband and motherless daughters have the sympathy of the
community.

Benjamin Illingsworth 1818-1902
Benjamin Illingsworth died at his home on East Main street Friday
morning, March 21, 1902, at the age of 84 years, May 22, 1902.
Mr. Illingsworth was born at Darlington, Yorkshire, England, came to
this country with his family in 1850, first settling at Stillwater,
Minnesota. Subsequently came to LeRoy and in 1870 purchased a farm
northwest of the village and later conducted a jewelry business in
LeRoy village. His first wife died in 1885 and in 1887 he married
a second wife who survives him, along with two daughters by his first
wife. In 1877 Mr. Illingsworth contracted a disease of the eyes which
resulted in total blindness.
Funeral services were conducted at the home of the deceased by Rev.
J.R. Jones Sunday March 23. Interment in the LeRoy Cemetery. The present
Mrs. Illingsworth is deserving of great commendation for the tender care
of her late husband and more especially for the last eight years of which
time he was an invalid and required the attention of a helpless child.
All the survivors have the sympathy of the community.

Robert McIntyre 1879-1911
Robert McIntyre, aged 32 years died on the train near Syracuse,
Kansas, on Thursday morning, December 6, 1911, on his way to Phoenix,
Arizona, where he planned to spend the winter for his health. He was
found dead in his sleeping berth by the porter. He passed away very
peacefully. He left Minneapolis Tuesday.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. P.T. McIntyre and was born in Austin
on May 30, 1879. He attended high school here and went into the telephone
business here under W.S. Willis, afterwards with the N.W. Company. The
father died here September 26, 1881. The family remained here until 1902
when they moved to Minneapolis. The mother died there May 23, 1907.
Robert has been foreman of the construction work for the Bell Telephone
company since he left Austin. He was unmarried and the youngest of five
children of whom three now survive: Will of Seattle, Washington, Tom of
Kansas City, Kansas, and Allie in Minneapolis.
The body was bought to Austin for interment. The funeral services
were conducted by C.D. Belden on Sunday afternoon at Oakwood Chapel.

Annette Edmundsc1825-1896
EDMUNDS -- At the residence of her son-in-law, Charlie Avery, in the
town of Beaver, Fillmore County, Minnesota, Monday morning February 3,
Mrs. Annette Edmunds died at the age of nearly 70 years, and was buried
from the Baptist Church in LeRoy, on Wednesday, February 5, at one o'clock
p.m., Rev. J.F. Bryant officiating.
Mrs. Edmunds was the wife of Henry Edmunds who died about 9 years ago.
They were among the oldest settlers here, having moved here in 1854. Mr.
Edmunds platted the old town of LeRoy, and built the first framed house
there. He also built the dam across the river at that place and started a
saw mill there. After a few years he sold out in the old town and moved
on a farm which he had pre-empted about three miles east of LeRoy. There
he lived until his death. Mrs. Edmunds, having lived here for over 45
years, with her passes away one of the oldest landmarks.
Survivors are two brothers Brayton Lincoln and Fayette Lincoln both
of LeRoy, and three daughters: Mrs. Myron Rumsey of Spring Valley, Mrs.
Turner of Chester, and Mrs. Charles Avery of Beaver, still survive to
mourn her loss.

E. F. McKee 1828-1897
Died, at his home in LeRoy, Wednesday, September 29, 1897, E.F. McKee,
aged 69 years, 25 days. Several years ago he had a stroke of paralysis
from which he never fully recovered, although able to be around most of
the time. Several weeks ago unmistakable signs of Bright's Disease and
stomach trouble manifested itself which became more aggravated until the
end came.
Mr. McKee was a blacksmith by trade and has worked at the business in
LeRoy for 40 years. Mr. McKee was born in Northumberland County,
Pennsylvania, on September 5, 1828. He served an appenticeship of five
years and in 1849 commensed work for himself along in those good old free
trade times. His salary amounted to from 50 to 62 cents per day, although
he was considered a fine mechanic. He emmigrated to the west and arrived
three miles east of LeRoy on February 22, 1855 and a few months later built
the first blacksmith shop in the old village of LeRoy. In 1868 he moved to
the new town where he had lived ever since.
He was married July 2, 1857 to Miss Mary E. Taylor of LeRoy, formerly
of Ithica, NY who survives him. Six children were born to them, five of
whom are still living: H.G. and C.R. McKee of LeRoy, F.T. McKee of Milaca,
Minnesota, Mrs. E.E Bent of Chester, IA., and Miss Linnie McKee of LeRoy.
Mr. McKee was buried in the LeRoy Cemetery on September 30. His funeral
was conducted by the Masonic Fraternity, he having been a member of Eureka
Lodge No. 75 of LeRoy for many years. Mr McKee was one of the oldest
settlers in this vacinity and leaves many friends to miss him.

Kevin Duane Burton1962-2012
Kevin Duane Burton, 49, Two Rivers, Wis.
Kevin Duane Burton, 49, of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, and formerly of Green
Bay, Wisconsin, passed away unexpectedly June 23, 2012.
Kevin was born November 9, 1962, in Minneapolis to LaVerne and Margaret
(McCarthy) Burton. Kevin was a 1981 graduate of West DePere High School
and lived most of his life in the Green Bay area. He was a talented auto
body technician and painter. He served his country in the U.S. Army
Reserves for four years.
Kevin approached life in a unique and sometimes unconventional way.
He was a good man with a big heart that would help anyone. Kevin’s
greatest accomplishment was being a wonderful father. Spending time
with his son Dylan was his greatest joy.
Kevin enjoyed time with his friends and riding his Harley. He was a
life-long member and founder of The Heathen’s Motorcycle Club, which he
considers his extended family. Kevin was also a fan of the Green Bay Packers.
Kevin was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Charles and Edna
McCarthy; paternal grandparents Harry Sr. and Margarite Burton; step-dads
Dale Dillinger and Gary Uzlik Sr.; uncles Robert Burton, Richard Burton,
Harry Burton Jr. and John Waller; aunt and uncle Joyce and Alvie Emery;
and his special great aunt Alice (Auntie Em) Wright.
Kevin is survived by his son Dylan (Ashley), Manitowac, Wis.; longtime
companion Carla Nikolas, Two Rivers; his mother, Margaret (Dennis) Dunn,
Austin; his father, LaVerne Burton, Algona, Iowa; sisters, Kimberly (Joe)
Pinkava, Austin; and Tracy Burton (Dave) Custer City, Okla.; brothers,
Alan (Rowena) Burton, Austin and Randy Burton (Sandy) Farmington, N.M.;
mother of Dylan, Jackie Hochmuth, Green Bay; nephews Christopher Kellerman
(Jessica) and Nicholas Doe; nieces Anna (Chris) Todd, Kristi Burton,
Samantha Doe and Trinity Foust; aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held June 28, 2012, at Proko-Wall Funeral
Home in Green Bay, with full military rites. A service will be planned
at a later date in Austin where Kevin will be laid to rest.

Stuart Ayshford Jr. 1926-2012
Obituaries
Stuart Ayshford, Jr., 85, of Waltham, Minnsota, died on Sunday, June 24,
2012, of natural causes, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Stuart Ayshford was born September 18, 1926, in Pleasant Grove Township,
Olmsted County, Minnesota, to Stuart and Margaret (Gerber) Ayshford. He grew
up on the family farm and attended rural and Stewartville schools. Stuart
enlisted into the United States Navy in 1943, serving during World War II,
including duty overseas in the Pacific. After his discharge, he returned
to the Rochester area.
Stuart was married on January 5, 1950, in Rochester, to Joan McLain.
Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Rochester where
they raised their son, Randy. They were later divorced, but stayed lifelong
friends. Stuart was employed in the construction industry in the Rochester
area for many years. He was a member of the Construction Laborers Union
Local 405 until his retirement.
Stuart was selected to participate in the Honors Flight program in
2009. He considered the tour of Washington, D.C. with fellow veterans
a great honor and an opportunity of a lifetime.
Stuart enjoyed working on home improvements projects and took great
pride in keeping a beautiful yard. He enjoyed following the Minnesota
Twins, as well as other sports. Stuart had a big heart for animals and
enjoyed the companionship of his cats and dog. He also had a strong
appreciation for nature and in earlier years enjoyed camping and walking
wooded trails. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and Byron
American Legion Post 119.
Stuart was very thankful for his wonderful, caring neighbors — Bill
and Lindsay Cordle, Gary Fitzpatrick, and Lois and Bob Gebhardt — who
provided support and friendship during his years living in Waltham.
Family was very important to Stuart, he always enjoyed family gatherings,
and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and
great-grandsons.
Survivors include his son, Randall (Mary) of Byron; three grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren, Hillary Ayshford of Rochester, Christopher
(Thamara) and great-grandson, Talos Ayshford, of Kasson, and William
(Jennifer) and great-grandson, Rex Ayshford, of Byron; a sister, Joyce
Nereson of White Bear Lake; and a brother, Alvin (Gloria) Ayshford of
Hot Springs, Ark.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Virginia Golberg
and Nora Thompson; and two brothers, Victor and Bruce Ayshford.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a prayer service at
7 p.m., on Wednesday, June 27, at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville.
A private family burial will take place at a later date at Union Cemetery
in Pleasant Grove.
The family suggests memorials to Paws and Claws Humane Society,
Rochester.

Arthur E. Houston1916-2012
Arthur E. Houston, 95 of Red Wing, Minnesota, died after a long battle
with emphysema on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Lake City Care Center, Lake
City, Minnesota.
The third of four children, he was born on September 15, 1916 to Hanno
Elmer and Hanna Victoria (Johansson) Houston in Duluth, Minnesota.
After the family moved to Austin in 1928, Art attended Austin High School
and got his first job at Hormel Foods Corp., where he worked in the beef
boning division for 18 years (1933-51). He then worked as a custodian/janitor
for several employers around the Austin area, including Austin Public Schools
(1951-58), Austin Medical Clinic (1958-62), and First Baptist Church (1964-65).
He married Fern (Davison) Hoium on August 9, 1956, in Albert Lea,
Minnesota, and they resided in Austin until moving to Colorado in 1965.
While living at various locations in Longmont and Boulder, Colorado,
over a period of 36 years (1965-2001), Art did custodial work for Boulder
Public Schools (1965-68) and at the Golden West senior citizens’ apartment
complex in Boulder from 1968 until his retirement in 1991.
Art and Fern enjoyed camping, hiking in the Rockies, and going on bus
tours throughout the country and into Canada. They relocated to Red Wing
in 2001, and Art was admitted to Lake City Care Center nursing home
facility in late December, 2004.
He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Red Wing.
Survivors include his wife Fern Houston, Red Wing, Minnesota; son
(by a previous marriage) Jeff Houston, Austin, Minnesota; stepson,
Dale Hoium, Red Wing, Minnesota; stepdaughters-in-law, Nancy Hoium,
Red Wing, Minnesota, and Judith Hoium, Loveland, Colorado;
step-granddaughters, Valery Hoium, Hager City, Wisconsin, and
Karen (Charles) Hyde, Ontario, Calif.; great-grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
Art was preceded in death by his sister, Olive Nelson, brothers,
Gilbert Houston, and Robert Houston, stepson, Marland Hoium.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:45 p.m. on Monday,
July 2nd at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin with Pastor Donald Mikitta from
Red Wing officiating. Friends may greet the family at Clasen-Jordan
Mortuary on Monday from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

RALPH I. JENSEN
Ralph I. Jensen, 38, died of carcinoma at 3:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 4th
at his home in Waterloo, Iowa. He was born on August 3, 1914 at LeRoy,
Minnesota. He was employed at the John Deere Waterloo Tractor works and
a member of the Holy Name Society of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, two children, Joann and Michael, his parents
Mr. and Mrs. Joe S. Jensen of LeRoy, three brothers Francis at home, Joe,
Jr. at LeRoy, and William of Chester, two sisters, Mrs. Norman Orke of LeRoy
and Mrs. Albert Musel of Ostrander.
The Rosary was said Thursday night at 8 p.m.
Funeral services were held Friday at 9:00a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church.
Burial was at Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Olaf J. Walstad 1888-1953
OLAF J. WALSTAD
Olaf J. Walstad, son of Mathilda and Ole Walstad was born April 14, 1888
in Nykirke, Norway and passed away unexpectly at his clothing store in
LeRoy, Thursday afternoon, March 5, 1953 at the age of 64.
He came to LeRoy from Norway in August, 1906 at the age of 17 and later
became a citizen. He was united in marriage to Marie J. Hauge on December
28, 1910.
He was an active member of the LeRoy Lutheran Church having served as
secretary for more than 37 years and a charter member of the present choir
which was organized in 1912. Interested in civic affairs, he held a life
membership with the LeRoy Volunteer Fire Department, served several years
on the village council, a member of the Commercial Club, and Troop Committee
of the Boy Scouts. He was also past Master of the Local Masonic Lodge. He
was in business in LeRoy for 40 years.
Surviving are his wife, four children: Harris of Minot, North Dakota,
Mrs. D.F. Boulett of Minneapolis, Mrs. J.C. Roy of Storm Lake, Iowa, and
Orlow of Joplin, Missouri. A brother Hans, of Osage, Iowa, a sister Sigrid
of Oslo, Norway, and seventeen grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Martz Funeral Home and the LeRoy
Lutheran Church Sunday, March 8, 1953 with Rev. Lund officiating. Burial
was in the LeRoy Lutheran Church.

Marie (Hauge) Walstad 1878-1974
MRS. MARIE WALSTAD
Mrs. Olaf Walstad, 96, of Mankato, formerly of LeRoy, died Wednesday,
October 9, 1974 at the Mankato Lutheran Home. She had been a resident of
the home for the last six years. Mrs. Walstad lived most of her life in
LeRoy.
Marie Hauge was born February 23, 1878 in LeRoy to Carrie and Halver
Hauge. She married the late Olaf Walstad on December 28, 1910.
Mrs. Walstad was a member of the Miriam Circle and an honorary member
of American Lutheran Church Women of the LeRoy Lutheran Church.
Survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Darrell (Carolyn) Boulett of
Minneapolis and Mrs. Joseph (Dorothy) Cray of Mankato, two sons, Harris
of Minot, North Dakota, and Orlow of Joplin, Missouri. Seventeen
grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11:00 AM at the
LeRoy Lutheran Church with Rev. Gary Olson officiating. Interment was
in the LeRoy Cemetery.

Jennie M. (Wells) Roy 1877-1974
JENNIE M. ROY, 96
Jennie M. Roy, the daughter of George and Rhoda Cray Wells was born in
Fremont, Nebraska, on December 30, 1877, and passed away in Mankato,
Minnesota, on Wednesday, January 30, 1974, at the age of 96 years.
Her family moved to a farm near LeRoy when she was four years old. The
balance of her life was spent in LeRoy with the exception of the last
six years which she spent with her daughter in Mankato, where loving care
was given her in her declining years.
Jennie was united in marriage to Foster Lathe Roy on August 4, 1897.
This union was blessed with three children. Mrs. Roy was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church of LeRoy, a member of the Eastern Star for 71
years, and a past Worthy Matron. She was also a member of the American
Legion Auxillary and a charter member of the Crochet Club.
Jennie was preceded in death by one son, Elmer in 1922, her husband
Foster in 1952, six brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by one daughter Mrs. Joseph (Rhoda) Young of Mankato
and one son Joseph also of Mankato, four grandchildren, and six
great-grandchildren.

Dorothy E. (Walstad) Roy 1915-1996
DOROTHY E. ROY, 81
Services were held on Tuesday, October 15, for Dorothy E. Roy, 81,
a former LeRoy resident who died Saturday, October 12, 1996 at Arlington
Community Hospital in Arlington.
Mrs. Roy was born June 6, 1915 to Olaf and Marie (Hauge) Walstad in
LeRoy. She graduated from Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, and
received her elementary education degree at Mankato State University. She
married Joseph Cray Roy June 8, 1941 in LeRoy and taught school in Joyce
and Fertile, Iowa, county school in Storm Lake, Iowa, and in the Eagle
Lake School District until retirement.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Minnesota Education
Association.
She volunteered her time at the Thrift Store and the Mankato Lutheran
Home. She enjoyed walking and spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Roy is survived by one daughter, Eleanor Dicks and her husband
Ronald of Storm Lake, three sons: Charles and his wife Karen, of Storm
Lake, Douglas and his wife Terri of Mankato, Richard and his wife Mickey
of Shorewood, 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a sister Carolyn
Boulett of Minneaspolis, and a brother Orlow Walstad and his wife Juanita
of Joplin, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother.

Funeral services for Joseph C. Roy, 82, who died Tuesday, April 7, 1987
at his Mankato Home, were Saturday, April 11 at Grace Lutheran Church with
Rev. Marberry Anderson officiating. Burial was in the LeRoy Cemetery.
Joseph Cray Roy was born February 4, 1905 to Foster and Jennie (Wells)
Roy in LeRoy. He married Dorothy Walstad. He was a salesman in the
restaurant equipment business. He was a member of Grace Lutheran
Church, the loyal Order of Moose, Chapter 1414 and a Red Cross volunteer.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy, three sons and their wives: Charles
and Karen of Storm Lake, Iowa, Doug and Terri of Mankato, and Rick and Terri
of West Germany, daughter Eleanor (Mrs. Ronald) Dicks of Storm Lake, Iowa,
a sister Mrs. Rhoda Young of Mankato, 10 grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren.

Martha Nicholson Errington 1836-1900
DIED -- At her home near the old town of LeRoy, Thursday, February 8,
1900, Mrs. Martha Errington.
Martha Nicholson was born June 24, 1836 at County Latrum, Ireland. In
1841 she came with her parents to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From there in
1861 to San Franscico where she married Henry Kirk. Two children were born
to this union, Jennie Melissa and Lillie Frances. Soon after the death of
her husband she came with her two children to Delaware County, Iowa where
on August 29, 1877 she married William Errington, residing in Alamakee Co.
until April 8, 1880 when they came to Mitchell Couty, Iowa and in 1884 to
LeRoy.
She leaves the husband and one daughter, Mrs. Marion Dalley as well as
many friends to mourn her.

Miriam A. “Meme” Ankeny, 93, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Saturday,
June 30, 2012, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.
Miriam was born on November 7, 1918, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, to
the Rev. C. Louis and Wilhemina (Will) Drews. She graduated from Alden
High School. Meme worked at Holtz Drug in the 1930s. On June 8, 1939, she
was married to Stanley Ankeny in Alden, Minnesota.
Stan and Meme started Ankeny Dairy Foods in 1946. Meme helped by wrapping
butter and packaging cottage cheese. They enjoyed many fishing trips to
Canada and spending winters in Mesa, Arizona. Stan and Meme were married
for 56 years before Stan’s death in 1995.
Meme was a member of Bethlehem Free Methodist Church. She was president
of the auxiliary at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home and enjoyed working in the
beauty shop. For several years, Meme was a member of the Mower County Fair
gospel committee.
Meme lived at the Cedars where she led Bible studies and played in the
kitchen band. Later, she lived at Primrose where she enjoyed leading Bible
studies. Meme resided at St. Mark’s for the last three years.
P.S. Buffy said, “Meme was an avid Twins fan and never missed a game.”
Meme is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Bob Low,
Austin, Judy and Myrle Asper, Austin, Linda and Wally Meyer, Austin; sons
and daughters-in-law, Mike and Patti Ankeny, Austin, Mark and Alison
Ankeny, Los Angeles, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren;
one great-great-grandchild; brother, Lex Drews, Eagan, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Marion Mentz, Austin, Beulah Ankeny, Stewartville, Minn.; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Stan, six sisters
and two brothers.
The honorary casket bearer will be Sam Ankeny. Casket bearers will be
Jay Low, Steve Asper, Dan Asper, Dave Meyer, Scott Meyer and Ben Ankeny.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 3 at Bethlehem
Free Methodist Church with the Rev. David Martin officiating. Interment will
be at Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from
5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 2 and at the church on Tuesday for one hour before
the service.

Joseph A. Sunderman1927-2012
Joseph A. Sunderman, 85, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, June 29,
2012, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay, Minnesota.
Joe was born April 7, 1927, in Glidden, Wisconsin, to Bernard and
Pauline Sunderman. On Nov. 17, 1949, he was united in marriage to Grace
Kreason in San Francisco, California.
Joe was a World War II veteran and a retired employee of the Austin
Utilities. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include three sons, Joseph (Teri) Sunderman, Austin, Minn.,
Larry (Janet) Sunderman, Austin, Minn., Jerry (Karen) Sunderman, Marion,
Iowa; six daughters: Peggy (Tom) Leonard, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Bonnie
(Dennis) Laug, Knoxville, Tenn., Mary Jo (Larry) Sutherland, Finland,
Minn., Norma (Alan) Otto, Everly, Iowa, Linda Sunderman (Karen Wales),
Rockaway, N.J., Paula Parker, Austin, Minn.; many grandchildren and
great-grandchildren; sister: Mary White, Austin, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Sunderman; son, Roy Sunderman;
brother, Larry Sunderman; grandson, Chase Miller.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. on Monday, July 2, 2012, at Mayer
Funeral Home with Father Raul Silva officiating. Friends may call one hour
before the service at Mayer Funeral Home on Monday. Military rites to honor
both Joe and Grace will be by American Legion Post No. 91.

Mary Ann Tapp 1856-1951
MARY ANN TAPP
Mary Ann Tapp was born in Glouchester, England, March 3,
1856 and passed away August 5, 1951 at the age of 95 years, 5 months, and
2 days.
Mary came to Canada with her parents at the age of six
and moved to Howard County, Iowa May 29, 1869. She resided in Oak Dale
Township since that time. Belle Greenleaf, her sister, is the sole remaining
member of the Tapp family.
Funeral services were held at Martz Funeral Home on Tuesday,
August 7, at 2 p.m. with Rev. E. Wilson officiating. Interment was in the
LeRoy Cemetery.
