William Henry Spencer1857-1938
W. H. SPENCER LAID TO REST
Sunday Afternnon, July 24, In LeRoy Cemetery
With the exception of a few years Mr. William Henry Spencer lived his
entire life in the village and community of LeRoy. He was born on May 26,
1857 on what is now known as the Dave Bent farm. This farm was then his
father's property and has remained in the Spencer family for many years.
It is interesting to know that Mr. Spencer was born in Minnesota while
it was yet a territory. He was one of the last two. Now only one remains
who was born in this great section of land before it was a state.
On May 8, 1879 William Henry Spencer was united in marriage to Helen
Mason. Six children were born to this union, two boys and four girls.
Mr. Spencer received his early education in the elementary school of
his day. He was a great reader and was familiar with all current events.
He may well be called a self educated man. Mr. Spencer has always been
an active man. For many years he served as clerk of the school district.
For many years he was assessor of the township of LeRoy. He served on
juries, was interested and active in all civic good. For 22 years he
wrote insurance for the German Insurance Co. of Spring Valley.
Mr. Spencer was a good man. He loved his family and home. He was
known for his integrity, his honesty, his uprightness. In many instances
his council was asked. Mr. Spencer was a member of the Presbyterian Church
of LeRoy. He loved the church work. In recent years he has not been active
due to difficulty in hearing.
Mr. Spencer has always been in good health. A definite change came about
six months ago. Since then there was a noticeable decline. One might say
his physical resources were exhausted.
One daughter, Mrs. Alma Anderson of Tampa, FL. and one sister Mrs.
Nettie Chase preceded Mr. Spencer in death. He leaves to mourn his death
his wife Mrs. Helen Spencer; five children Orville Spencer of Huntersville,
Minnesota, Elmer Spencer of LeRoy, Mrs. Laura Brooks of Austin, Mrs. Marshy
Hauck of Minneapolis, Mrs. Elsie Harrison of Weslaco, Texas, two sisters
Mrs. Prosser of LeRoy and Mrs. Hurlbut of Nashua, Iowa, 16 grandchildren
and 11 great-grandchildren.
On Wednesday, July 20, 1938 at about 6:30 in the morning at the full
age of 81 years, 1 month, 24 days he left his earthly habitation and went
to meet his God.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon
at 2 o'clock with pastor H. Wybenya officiating.

Elizabeth McGee Spencer 1825-1906
MRS. W.B. SPENCER DEAD
Mrs. W. B. Spencer died about midnight on Monday, November
5, 1906 at her home in LeRoy village, aged 81. She had been growing feeble
for many months but attended church as usual on Sunday and on Monday called
on several neighbors. She spent the evening discussing with her husband the
sermon of the previous day and in scripture reading and prayer and was very
ill for about an hour.
Elizabeth McGee was born near Tidionte, Warren County,
Pennsylvania November 18, 1825 and was married there to Mr. Spencer
October 11, 1842. They remained there until 1855 when with a team they
started to seek a home in the far west. At Dunkirk they took a boat to
Toledo, thence by rail to Chicago and by team to McGregor and Monona, Iowa.
Part of the way the men were sick and the women had to drive the teams.
They came on to LeRoy buying a claim in section 29, where they experience
all the vicissitudes of pioneer life. During the war Mr. Spencer served
in the Army, thus leaving the responsibilities of the home upon the
faithful wife. Here they have resided all the years since. Five children
were born to them: Emily C. who died in 1852 at the age of six, Mrs. L.W.
Prosser of LeRoy, Mrs. Alex Wright of Charles City, Iowa., W.H. Spencer of
LeRoy, and Mrs. Dr. Hurlbut of Ionia, Iowa.

Note: The newspaper was supposedly printed on Friday, but the
reference to the funeral on Saturday was past tense. Logically then,
he died on the Wednesday after Christmas (Dec. 28, 1949), and was buried on
Saturday, Dec. 31st, and the paper then came out on the following Friday,
the 6th of January 1950. -- kk
