C. D. Belden

1848-1915

"30" Rev. CD Belden, Many Years Editor of the Transcript Passes

For the second time the newspapers of Austin are called upon to use the mystic figure "30" to symbolize the death of one long associated in the work.

It is approppriate that "30" a number which has a special significance in every newspaper shop in the world should be at the head of the notice of Rev. C.D. Belden, who for so many years was editor of the Mower Co. Transcript. In every newspaper office the figure "30" is written on the last article for publication of the day. It is the number that signifies the close of work, the end. To the printer "30" is as frought with meaning as "taps" to a soldier.

Rev. C.D. Belden passed away at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon after lying in an unconscious state from about seven the night before. For the past four months he has not been out of his room.

In the spring of 1914 Mr Belden consulted a specialist who pronounced his illness as caused by cancer. On June 25th of that year he underwent an operation, but the surgeon found the cancer had so involved the vital organs there was no hope for him. He returned from the hospital in August and began to put his house in order for he knew what he had to face. For a time he came to the Transcript office but his visits there became less frequent and shorter finally leaving the work in charge of Miss Annie Robie who on February 1st of this year purchased the Transcript and on June 1st consolidated the paper with the Republican under the title Transcript-Republican.

Mr. Belden's "Farmer Ben" column was one of the most interesting features of the Transcript. It was pungent, sarcastic and oft times caustic. He wove it into quaint philosophy and sage advice. His comments on state and national affairs on moral and social questions were widely quote. He continued to write his "Farmer Ben" until August 17th issue of the Transcript-Republican.

Mr. Belden made all the arrangements for the funeral two months ago and his wishes are being fully carried out by his family. The funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at the home at 3PM.

Rev. Clarendon Dwight Belden was born near Providence, Rhode Island, May 3, 1848 son of Houston Stanton and Antoinette Percival (Manchester) Belden. His father was born in Standisfield, Massachusetts, January 15, 1808 and died in Providence, Rhode Island on February 11, 1890. His mother was born at Little Compton, Rhode Island, May 14, 1815 and died at Providence on April 10, 1900. They were married on December 9, 1835. The father was a graduate of Yale College and was principal of a private New England academy which he owned. It was situated at Fruit Hill just north of Providence. The subject of this sketch was educated in his father's academy. He graduated from the Lyons University Grammar school in Providence in 1864 and in 1868 graduated in the four year course from Brown University with the BA degree, taking an MA later in the course. He entered Crozer Theological Seminary at Upland, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1874. In June, 1874 he was ordained as a Baptist minister in the Memorial Baptist Church of Philadelphia.

In November 1874 he located as pastor of the Baptist church of Austin, Minnesota, resigning in 1882 to become Mower Co. superintendent of schools. He continued in this office for nine years, during which time great progress was made in grading rural schools so that pupils might make continuous progress in their studies to prepare for higher schools.

Mr. Belden was pastor of Baptist Church in Windom, Minnesota, 1891-1892 during which time he dedicated the new house of worship, free of debt.

In October, 1893 he purchased a half interest in the Mower County Transcript forming a partnership with NS Gordon and took the entire editorial management of the paper. In December 1898 he purchased Mr. Gordon's interest, becoming sole owner.

Mr. Belden was married to Mrs. Francelia Louise (West) Crandall in Austin on June 27, 1877. Mr. and Mrs. Belden have one child, Antoinette Griffith Belden Varco of Sidney, Montana, who was born in Austin on June 24, 1882. Mr Belden, in addition to the work at the Transcript has continued in his ministerial work and has been in charge of Baptist Churches in Brownsdale, Blooming Prairie, and Lansing at different times. He has probably officiated at more weddings and funerals than any other minister who lived in Mower County.

He has also taken much interest in agriculture, becoming one of the organizers and manager of the Austin Cooperative Creamery Association in 1893. He was for years a member of the Austin board of Education and its clerk. He has been vice president of the National Editorial Assoc., vice president of the National Creamery Buttermakers Association, and president of the State County Superintendents Association, and president of the Mower Co. editorial Association since its organization. He came into close relation with this community, county and state in many ways.

Francelia Louise (West) Belden

1843-1918

MRS. C. D. BELDEN

Austin and Mower County loses another of its splended women in the death of Mrs. C.D. Belden. She has been identified with the social church and home life of this city ever since she came here in her young womanhood. She has done her work, carried her burdens and never shifted them to others shoulders. People trusted and loved her, and when they turned to her for sympathy and help they never met with disappointment. A good friend, a good mother, and a good woman has been called home.

Francelia Louise West was born in Stockton, New York on November 7, 1843. She was the daughter of Lewis and Miranda B. (Husbrook) West. Her father was a native of Stockton, New York, and came to Mitchell County, Iowa, in 1854, locating at Otranto.

Miss West was married to John Solner Crandall at Otranto in June, 1859 and they came to Austin soon afterward to reside. He died here in 1873, leaving three children: Catherine who married Mr. Lobb and died about 13 years ago, Jennie residing in Austin and who has been with her mother during her illness and at the time of her death, and John who now resides in Yankton, South Dakota.

June 27, 1877 Mrs. Crandall was married to Rev. C.D. Belden, pastor of the Baptist Church. He died on August 25, 1915, leaving one daughter Antoinette, wife of Earl C. Varco of Sidney, Montana.

Mrs. Belden has been poorly for the past year suffering from heart trouble. On Friday she had eaten her dinner as usual and was sitting in her chair when the summons came. She was a faithful member of the Baptist Church and of the WRC.

The notice of the funeral is pending on the arrival of the son from South Dakota and the daughter from Montana, who will wish to attend.

Benjamin Francis Wells

c1852-1892

Obituary:

WELLS - At his residence in Woodbury County, Iowa, Saturday, August 6, 1892. B.F. Wells died of cancer of the stomach, at the age of 40 years.

During the long illness, his loving wife and aged mother hovered over him like ministering angels caring for and comforting him as best they knew. The deceased was a member of the M.E. Church. He leaves his wife, four children, an aged mother, five brothers and seven sisters to mourn his loss. After eight months of suffering the weary sufferer is at rest. The spirit is gone to Him who gave it. During his long illness he did not murmur or complain, but bore his affliction with the fortitude of a Christian.

He knew months before the end that he must leave his wife, children and home, yea, all that was near and dear to him, yet he faced the inevitable bravely. He is gone. There is an empty chair in his late home; an aching void that can never be filled. No more will his little ones greet a father's coming. He is gone, yet God does everything for the best. He will comfort the widow and orphans in their sorrow as no earthly friends can do. He waits the coming of his loved ones.

The funeral services were held at the M.E. Church, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Carr, and were attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives, neighbors, and friends. Following the services the remains were taken to the beautiful Floyd cemetery where they were laid to rest.
