Sherman William Walburn, "Sherm", 91, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, of Austin, Minnesota, passed from this earth into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Friday, March 2, 2012, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, surrounded by his family.

Sherman was born February 18, 1921, in Clear Lake, Wisconsin, to Clifford and Hattie (Reed) Walburn. He spent his early years in Clear Lake, Chaffee Settlement, Wis. — where he remembered waking up to the smoke of many moonshine stills — Morristown and Austin. Sherm married the light of his life, Frances Fern Tucker, on September 30, 1946, and they have lived happily in the house he built in Austin since that time.

He was a lifetime member of the Cedar River Archery Club in Austin, helping to build the kitchens, gates, fencing and winning many tournament trophies. Sherm and Fran were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church and attended there since 1946. He was employed at the Austin Daily Herald, starting in 1937 holding jobs as paperboy, mailroom worker, janitor, printer’s devil, linotype operator, advertising compositor and shop foreman.

He retired in 1986 after 49 years of service. Sherm was proud to be a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and of his military service in World War II in the 9th Infantry Division, M Company, and 60th Infantry Regiment, the famous GO DEVILS. He served in Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy — landing on Utah Beach on D-4, northern France — Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He won the Bronze Star First Oak Leaf Cluster for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy in the European African Middle Eastern Theater of Operations.

Sherm was an expert craftsman, and blue ribbon winning wood worker. He loved to craft items in his basement wood shop and share them with his family and friends. His handiwork can be found in many places in the Austin area and other places throughout the United States. Sherm also loved spending time with friends and family, and particularly spending time with Fran, his wife of 65 years.

He loved camping, fishing, gardening, rock hounding, lapidary work and meeting friends every day for coffee. He enjoyed meeting new people and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Sherm can best be remembered for his kindness, bravery, strength, compassion, hard work, and a willingness to help anyone at any time. Having a sweet, gentle spirit, he had a love for life, a great sense of humor and a smile on his face for all.

Sherman is survived by his wife, Frances Walburn, Austin, Minn.; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Denny Davis, Eureka, Mont.; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Darlene Walburn, Rochester, Minn.; grandchildren: Zachary Davis, Littleton, Colo., Denise Wee, Reedsburg, Wis., Jennifer Davis, Townsend, Mont., Adam (Kathy) Walburn, Tower City, N.D., Matthew Walburn, Rochester; great-grandchildren: Nevaeh Davis, and Devin, Derian, Breanna, and Bailey Walburn; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his son, Rodney Walburn; brother, Warren Walburn; mother and father, Clifford and Hattie Walburn.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 7, with the Rev. Marilee A. Benson officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with Austin Post 91 American Legion in charge of military rites. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and at the church on Wednesday for one hour before the service.

1914 Andrew Johansen 1966

Andrew Paul Johansen, son of Alfred and Elsie Johansen, was born March 12, 1914, at Harlan, Iowa.

The family moved to Albert Lea, where he attended High School and resided until 1940, when he moved to Austin, residing at 901 Oakland Ave. W, the past 13 years.

In 1936, he married Maxine A. Henderson at Northwood, Iowa.

Mr. Johansen served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the Moose Lodge.

He died suddenly at 1 a.m. Oct. 11, 1966, at his home after suffering a heart attack.

Surviving are his wife, Maxine; three sons, Ronald A Johansen, Darrel W. Johansen, Minneapolis, Robert J. Johansen, of the Navy; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Gail) Peterson, Austin; four grandchildren; three brothers, Henry Johansen, Albert Lea, Herman Johansen, Syracuse, New York, Walter Johansen, Albert Lea; a sister, Mrs. Carrel Burger, Harlan, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 14, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rev. Robert Hamp officiating. Interment was In Oakwood Cemetery with Worlien Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Barbara J. Weinmann, 76, of Austin, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at Sacred Heart Care Center where she was a resident.

Barbara was born January 25, 1936, in Mason City, Iowa, to Roy and Tapager. She attended high school in Austin, Minn. Barbara enjoyed traveling, golf and bingo. She was a member of the Eagles where she was involved with the drill team.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie (Roger) Holloway, Turner, Oregon, Deborah Meyer, Rochester, Minn.; three sons, Robert (Michelle) Tracy, Red Wing, Minn., James P. Tracy, Vero Beach, Fla., Christian (Heidi) Tracy, Waseca, Minn.; son-in-law, David D. Meyer, Austin; 10 step children; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two aunts.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Robert Tracy and Gerald Weinmann; brother, Tom Tapager.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at Mayer Funeral Home with Father Donald Zenk officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at Mayer Funeral Home on Monday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.

Jacob “Jake” Moe, 32, of Austin, died Saturday morning, Feb. 25, 2012, from his injuries in an automobile accident near Austin, Minnesota. Jake was born Feb. 3, 1980, in Austin, Minnesota the son of Steve and Mary Kay Moe.

He was a lifelong resident of Austin, graduating from Austin High School. Jake was united in marriage to Megan Gerhart on June 25, 2011, in Austin.

He loved anything with a motor and rims, spending time with his family and friends and listening to country western music. He was employed as a carpenter for Anderson Construction. Jake was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin.

Survivors include his wife, Megan Moe of Austin; son, Micah Swanson of Austin; his parents, Steve and Mary Kay Moe of Austin; sister, Andrea (Andie) Ulrich of Winona; brother, Nick Moe of Minneapolis; his father and mother-in-law, Tom and Cheryl Gerhart of Austin and many other relatives and special friends. He was preceded in death by paternal and maternal grandparents.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Glenn Monson, officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, February 27th at the Worlein Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family.

Anita Marie DeBoer, 47

Anita M. DeBoer, 47, of Lyle, Minnesota, died Monday, February 20, 2012, at her home in Lyle.

Anita Marie Hoffman was born June 18, 1964, in Osage, Iowa, to Dean and Helen (Hoff) Hoffman. She attended school in St. Ansgar, Iowa, and lived on the family farm in Mitchell County. Anita then married Wayne DeBoer; they later divorced. She was employed by Malt-O-Meal for 11 years. Her free time was spent going to many movies and concerts, and she enjoyed playing pool. She also enjoyed attending her daughter Jasmine’s school activities and her son Dean’s sports and athletic events. Anita loved watching and spending time with her granddaughter, Briella.

Survivors include her children, Dean (Brooke) DeBoer and Jasmine Christiansen, both of Lyle; granddaughter, Briella DeBoer of Lyle; parents, Dean and Helen Hoffman of St. Ansgar; brothers, Randy (Kari) and family, Dale (Lynda Kisner) and family, Jody (Jane); nieces, nephews, and other family members. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Margaret and Arland Hoff and Ida and Bill Hoffman.

Harold L. Hoffman, 75, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Friday, March 9, 2012, at his home in Austin.

Harold was born on June 20, 1936, in Grand Meadow, Minnesota, to Ben and Ellen (Cassidy) Hoffman. He graduated from Elkton High School in 1954 and enlisted in the Navy serving on a minesweeper during the Korean War. After he was discharged, he attended vocational school in Austin for farm equipment mechanic. After graduation, Harold began his career at the John Deere dealership in Austin and retired after 30 years. He later was a delivery representative for propane and diesel fuels.

Harold was united in marriage to Faye Flessner on Oct. 12, 1961, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Seward, Neb.

Harold served on the church council and taught Sunday school. For many years, he also volunteered at the food shelf for the Salvation Army. Harold enjoyed his hobby of collecting toy farm equipment. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Ellen Hoffman.

Harold is survived by his wife, Faye Hoffman, Austin; sons: Wayne Hoffman, Austin, Bruce Hoffman, Westlake Village, Calif., Glenn (Dawn) Hoffman, Farmington, Larry Hoffman, Apple Valley, Minn.; grandchildren: Tim Hoffman, Amanda Hoffman, Colin Hoffman, Sawyer Hoffman; brothers: Vernon (Margaret) Hoffman, Dexter, LaVerne (Norma) Hoffman, Dexter, Rev. Roger (Freda) Hoffman, Syracuse, Neb.; cousin: Mable Kraft, Austin; nieces; nephews and friends.

Viola Joyce Hughson, 90, of Austin, died Friday, February 24, 2012, at Our House Memory Care in Austin.

Viola was born on November 12, 1921, in New Richmond, Wisconsin, to Sofus and Essie (Detienne) Petersen. She attended school in Austin and was married to Albert Hughson on Oct. 6, 1941, at her parents’ home in Austin. Viola enjoyed watching Twins baseball, going bowling, and playing cribbage. She was a member of several fraternal organizations. Viola especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, and a brother.

Viola is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law: Gary Hughson, Lino Lakes, Minn.; Alan (Beth) Hughson, Austin; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Reverend Shari Mason officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Cemetery in Austin. Friends may call for one hour before the service on Monday.

Memorials are preferred to St. Croix Hospice or First United Methodist Church.

Death of Dr. Christie.

After a Month's Illness, Dies at
St. Mary's Hospital, Minneapolis.

Dr. George Christie, who has relatives and is well known in this section, died at St. Mary's hospital in Minneapolis, Tuesday night, at 10 o'clock, of paralysis. He suffered a stroke of paralysis about a month ago, and the best of medical aid could not avail to effect a cure. The remains will be brought to Austin this evening for burial in the Austin Cemetery. The funeral will be held Friday at 10 o'clock a.m.

George Christie was born in Highgate, Franklin county, Vermont, in 1852. He moved to this state at an early day, settling near Oakland, Freeborn county. He subsequently studied medicine at the Ann Arbor (Michigan) Medical College, and after his graduation began the practice of medicine at Waseca, Minnesota, at which place he resided for several years. For the past four years he lived at Minneapolis, where he had a liberal patronage as a leading physician.

The deceased was a bachelor. His mother, Mrs. A.J. Christie resides in Austin. His brothers and sisters are: Rev. A. Christie of Minneapolis; Robert Christie of Fergus Falls, A. E. Christie of Austin, William Christie of Oakland, Mrs. D. St. Ledger and Mrs. J.R. Mears of Austin.

Dr. Christie was a very genial gentleman and had friends all over the state. He will be remembered by his host of Austin friends, who greatly sympathize with the aged mother and brothers and sisters in their bereavement.

Death of James Pace

One of Mower County's Oldest
Residents Passes Away

James Pace, a resident of Mower county for over thirty years, succumbed to the ravages of la grippe, at the home of his son in the western part of the city, Saturday evening.

The deceased has suffered more or less sickness during his life and the final struggle, lasting something over three weeks, carried him away as above stated.

The funeral was held today at 10 o'clock, Rev. F. C. Whitney performing the last sad rites. The body was interred in Oakwood cemetery.

James Pace was born in Kentucky in the year 1830. At the age of seven he moved wtih his parents to Indiana where he was married in 1849 to Mary Feathers. In 1856 they moved to Olmsted county and resided there nine years, moved thence to this county. They settled in Lyle township and afterwards moved to Brownsdale, and four years ago came to Austin, since then living with their son, J.E. Pace.

Mr. Pace has been a farmer nearly all his life, and followed this vocation until too much weakened by sickness to attend to such arduous work.

The deceased leaves, besides a devoted wife, a large family: Wm. Pace, Kenyon, Minnesota; Mrs. Sarah Winn, of Lyle; Mrs. Alice Lapoint; Chas. Pace; John Pace, Supt. of Flax Fibre; J.E. Pace foreman of the carpenter and Wagon shop, of Johnson & Smith; and Frank Pace of Brownsdale, all of whom were present at the funeral today.

To the grief stricken wife, daughters and sons, the Herald tenders its deepest sympathy in this sad hour.

OBITUARY.

1871 Sara Owen 1950

Sara Owen was born to Lucius and Mary Bemis at Winnebago, Minnesota, on July 26, 1871, and passed away at St. Olaf hospital, April 26, 1950.

She was married on November 12, 1900, to Will H. Owen and resided at their farm home, southeast of London, Minnesota, until six years ago when she moved to Austin, where she resided until her death.

Her husband preceded her in death, also two sisters, Mrs. Clara Baxter of Winnebago and Mrs. Florence Bemis of Mankato and a brother, W.E. Bemis of Greeley, Colorado.

Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Emma Thatcher of St. Ansgar, Iowa, Mrs. M.E. Bursell of Fairmont, Miss Alice Bemis of Austin and Mrs. Grace Billington of St. Ansgar.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 29, 1950, at 2 p.m. at the Jordan Chapel, Rev. Rollin Oswald of the Methodist Church, St. Ansgar, officiating. Interment was at Oakwood cemetery.

RICHARDS.

Edwin Richards, a former resident of Udolpho, died Tuesday morning, May 14, 1904, at Bethesda hospital, St. Paul, of kidney trouble and pleurisy, aged 71 years. He was born in Vermont, August 8, 1835. In 1837, his parents moved to Clinton county, New York, where they lived about eight years when they moved to Dodge county, Wisconsin, where Edwin received a common school education.

In 1859, he came to Olmsted county, Minnesota, and later to Westfield, Dodge county. He was married in 1862 to Miss Almira V. Kelley, a native of New Hampshire. They came to Udolpho township in 1872 settling on section 13. He was at one time chairman of the board of supervisors.

They moved to Mermentau, Louisiana in 1889, and the home has since been there. He came from Louisiana about five weeks ago and visited in Austin and with his daughter at Hayfield. He then went to St. Paul on usiness and was taken suddenly sick. He was in the hospital only two days.

Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Richards, one Mrs. Emma J. Stimson, is dead. The three surviving are Mrs. E.J. Neller, Hayfield, Mrs. Ida M. Faget, Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Edwin O. Richards of Chester, Minnesota. The widow also is living.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. C. Belden of Austin, were held in the Lansing Church, Saturday afternoon. Interment was in Lansing Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank all friends for the great kindness shown in the time of their bereavement.

Henry B. Wacholtz, 89, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at the Adams Healthcare Center.

Henry was born April 7, 1922, in Urbank, Minnesota, to Theodore and Elizabeth (Koep) Wacholtz. At two months of age, his family moved to Albert Lea, Minn., where Henry grew up. He attended school through the ninth grade. Henry worked for the Albert Lea Tribune before entering the Navy in 1942. While in the Navy, his merchant ship was torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. The crew spent 11 days in a lifeboat making their way to Ascension Island to safety. Henry was discharged from the navy in 1945.

On April 14, 1944, he was united in marriage to Barbara Bassler of Austin, and they resided in Austin their entire married life. Henry worked for the Hormel Company on the guard force for 30 years. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, the American Legion, VFW, Eagles and Elks. Henry and Barbara spent most weekends at the lake, boating, entertaining and fishing. Henry also liked to keep busy, so he built five new homes for his family. In his retirement, he spent many hours in his workshop making birdhouses and wood baskets.

Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia (Harvey) Heimer, Adams; son, Jon Wacholtz, Austin; grandchildren, Allison Heimer (John) Kollofski, Aaron Heimer, Adam Heimer, Sara Miller; great-grandchildren, Burton Wacholtz, Sydney and Jack Miller, Brady, Jayci, Katelyn, Brandon Heimer, Logan Kollofski; sisters, Betty (Jim) Herplinck, Albert Lea, Helen Olsen, Winona; many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara on Oct. 5, 2006; sister, Theresa; brothers, Leonard, Albert, Hubert and Lawrence.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2012, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. There will be a 6 p.m. wake service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.

The casket bearers will be Aaron Heimer, Adam Heimer, Burton Wacholtz, Jack Miller, Brady Heimer and John Kollofski.

Memorials are preferred to Pacelli High School, American Red Cross, Adams Assisted Living and Care Center, or donor’s choice.

Luke David Unverzagt, 32, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday morning, February 25, 2012, from injuries received in an automobile accident near Austin, Minnesota.

Luke was born June 15, 1979, in Austin, Minnesota, the son of David H. and Janelle J. (Hunter) Unverzagt. He grew up in Austin where he attended school, graduating from Austin High School in 1997. He continued his education at Riverland Community College receiving a degree as a construction electrician in 1999. He worked for Fox Electric as an apprentice electrician before joining Hicks Electric where he worked throughout southern Minnesota.

Luke was united in marriage to Sarah Ann Thomas on May 15, 2010, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Luke enjoyed being outdoors, playing golf, snowmobiling and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Unverzagt of Austin; parents, David H. and Janelle J. Unverzagt of Austin; sister, Danielle (Claude) Pulliam of Austin; father and mother-in-law, Danny and Carol Thomas of Austin; brother-in-law, Chad (Rachel) Thomas of Austin; niece, Lauren Pulliam; nephews, Dillon, Conner and Charlie Thomas; grandmothers-in-law, Shirley Saaranen and Jeanette Thomas of Austin; many aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Herb and Joy Unverzagt and Robert and Thelma Hunter; an uncle, Scott Unverzagt and grandfathers-in-law, Lewis Thomas, Jr. and Gordon Saaranen.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastors Kristi Koppel and Jonathan Unverzagt, co-officiating. Interment will follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. OBITUARY.

Rev. I.J.B. Wright

Rev. I.J.B. Wright died at his home 806 West Winona street, this morning at 8:20 after a lingering illness. He had been ill since a year ago last June, and though a great sufferer, he bore his illness with marked patience and Christian resignation.

Mr. Wright was born in Addison, Steuben county, New York, October 16, 1829. He remained at the home place until 22 years of age where he was engaged in teaching school. In 1856 he came west and preempted a farm two and one-half miles southwest of Brownsdale.

Later he returned to the east and studied for the Methodist ministry, preaching in New York and Pennsylvania. He then came west to Albert Lea and in 1870, on December 14, he was married to Mrs. Hattie Chandler at Lansing. In 1872 they moved to the Brownsdale farm where they resided until 1896 when they came to Austin to live. Of the two children born to them, Justus Alford died in infancy, and one daughter, Almira Wright Scullin, lives in Ipswich, South Dakota. Besides his wife, he also leaves a step-daughter, Mrs. Frank Daws of Austin and an adopted daughter, Mrs. Frances German of Waterville, Washington.

Mr. Wright was one of a family of twelve children, all of whom are dead but one sister, Mrs. Almira Peck, who lies critically ill at her home at bath, N.Y.

About his bedside were gathered at the time of his death, his immediate family and his niece, Mrs. E.B. Starr of Wadena, Iowa.

The funeral will be held from the Methodist church at 2:30 and 2 o'clock from the house Sunday afternoon. Dr. Stout will officiate and the interment will be made in Oakwood Cemetery.

In the death of this good man Austin loses a citizen who ever stood loyal to the right as he saw it; a family circle is bereft of sweet companionship. . . .

Rev. I.J.B. Wright

Rev. I.J.B. Wright died Friday morning, Sept. 16, 1910, at his home on Winona street after a long illness. He has been ill for over a year. He was born in Addison, N.Y., Oct. 16, 1829. He grew up there and taught school considerably in that locality.

In 1856 he came west and preempted a farm southwest of Brownsdale. Later he returned east and studied for the Methodist ministry, and preached in New York and Pennsylvania, and then came west again. He was married at Lansing, on December 14, 1870, to Mrs. Hattie Chandler. In 1872 they moved to the farm near Brownsdale where they lived until 1896 when they came to Austin. They spent some years in the south but did not like it so well. Mr. Wright was a consistent Christian man and highly respected by all. He was a pronounced prohibitionist and was outspoken in his view on intemperance and similar vices. He was a loyal helper in church work and after he retied from the active ministry was a faithful supporter of the various pastors under whom he lived. In his family he was kind and considerate and his influence in the community was always on the side of righteousness.

He leaves a widow and one child, Mrs. Alma Scullin of Ipswich, S.D. His step-daughter is Mrs. Frank P. Dawes of this city. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, Rev. J.W. Stout officiating. Interment in Oakwood. We feel a pesonal loss in the departure of this worthy brother.

Elgar Arnold Thune Jr., 77, passed away February 24, 2012, at Friendship Manor Nursing Home, Shakopee, Minnesota.

Elgar “Arnie” was born in 1934 to Ruth and Elgar Thune Sr. in Worcester, Mass. The family lived in Chicago and Saint Paul before settling in Adams, Minn. After graduating from Adams High School, Arnie joined the Army and spent time in Germany and touring Europe. Then returning from duty, he worked for Minneapolis Moline for a number of years. Arnie spent the later part of his life in Albert Lea, Minn., where he worked for Streeter Company. He was a machinist before retiring.

Arnie was a colorful character in Albert Lea. He enjoyed his apartment above the Eagles Club where he had wonderful neighbors. Arnold spent many hours walking or riding his red scooter around town, touring the parks, gardening, shopping, hanging out at the antique store, greeting the workers at the bank and hospital cafeteria. He enjoyed going on trips. He visited many exotic locations around the world. Arnold was a unique person, and he will be missed by many.

Our family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers needed in Arnie’s battle with dementia, especially Valley View Assisted Living of Jordan, Community Care of Shakopee, Friendship Manor Nursing Home, Heartland Hospice, Scott County Social Services, and McNearney Funeral Home of Shakopee.

Survivors include sister, Barbara Panser of Owatonna, Minn.; brother, Bob (Susie) Thune of Austin; two brothers-in-law; 10 nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents, Elgar Thune Sr. and Ruth Thune; sisters, Beverly Lillquist and Lenore Dammann.

Dolores Lorraine Rasmussen, 88, of the Rose Haven Apartments in Rose Creek died Sunday, February 26, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems Austin.

Delores was born Sept. 6, 1923, at Cudahy, Wisconsin, the daughter of Guy and Lorraine (Anderson) Leeper. She graduated from Austin High School and was married to E. E. “Pat” Rasmussen on December 31, 1942, at Brownsdale, Minn.

Dolores retired from IBM in Rochester after 28 years. She was formerly a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church at Elkton, Minn. Dolores enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and for the past 20 years Dolores resided at the Rose Haven Apartments in Rose Creek. The family extends special thanks to the people at Rose Haven and to her special friend, Brad McMartin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, E. E. “Pat” Rasmussen; parents and two sisters.

Dolores is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Sherrie Rasmussen, Austin, Mike and Brenda Rasmussen, Henderson, Minn., Dan and Annie Rasmussen, Rose Creek; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Gloria Anderson, Austin, and Joy Stancl, Austin.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 29, at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Elkton, Minnesota, with the Rev. Liz Erickson and Pastor David Hoot officiating. Interment will be at St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in Austin from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and at the church for one hour before the service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Genevieve M. Thorsen will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2012, at the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church in Grand Meadow with the Rev. Ann Siverling officiating. Genevieve M. Thorsen, 81, of Grand Meadow died Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center.

She was born on February 17, 1931, in Mower County to Arthur and Coral (Gunderson) Blom and attended and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1949. Following her graduation she attended Austin Community College and received her teaching certificate. From 1950 to 1952 she taught at the District 53 School near Grand Meadow. Genevieve started working for Mayo Clinic on May 12, 1958, and retired as a supervisor on June 28, 1994. On July 17, 1954, she was united in marriage to Norman W. Thorson. He died in July of 1993. She was later married to Norbert Thorsen on Aug. 9, 1997, at Hoflanda Lutheran Church. Genevieve enjoyed decorating, doing crafts and traveling. She also enjoyed cooking but also looked forward to going out to eat.

She is survived by her husband, Norbert of Grand Meadow and her children, Michael (Jo) Thorson of Austin, Minn., Cynthia Mahoney of Rochester, Minn., Jeffrey (Ruth) Thorson of Waltham, Minn., James Thorson and Daniel (Brenda) Thorson all of Rochester, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Gary (Alice) Blom of Byron, Minn.; sister-in-law, Janet Blom of Maple Grove, Minn.

She is also survived by Norbert’s children, Steve (Judy) Thorsen of Grand Meadow, Russell Thorsen of San Francisco, Calif., Tracy Thorsen of La Crosse, Wis., and Peggy (Brian) Maeney of Mason City, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Coral and her stepmother, Kathryn; first husband; brother, Ronald and a sister, Barbara.

Obituary.

Mrs. I.J.B. Wright

Mrs. I.J.B. Wright died in Plainsfield, Wisconsin, Saturday morning at ten o'clock. She had a slight stroke of paralysis the previous Sunday and also had one about a year ago.

Abigail M. Richardson was born on February 4, 1842, in Herman, St. Lawrence county, New York. She came with her parents, Alfred and Sarah Richardson, to Minnesota when she was 13 years old, when there were but two houses in Austin, and she has always lived here since, with the exception of two years.

She was married on February 4, 1861, to Stephen N. Chandler in Windom township at her father's home. They lived on a farm until Mr. Chandler enlisted in 1862 in the Civil War, when Mrs. Chandler returned to the home of her parents with her baby daughter Lania, now Mrs. F. P. Dawes. Mr. Chandler died from Starvation in October 1864 in Andersonville prison after two and a half years of service.

In October 1870 she was married to Rev. I.J.B. Wright, who had a pastorate in and about Albert Lea. They lived on a farm near Brownsdale and later moved to Austin to a home on West Winona street where Mr. Wright died ten years ago. Two children were born to this union, Justice Alfred, who died in infancy, and Almira A., who died three years ago. Mrs. Wright lived in her own home until three and a half years ago when she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Dawes. She accompanied Mrs. Dawes to Plainfield two weeks ago. Mrs. Wright had a sister, De Lania Hart who died years ago.

Funeral services were conducted by the Methodist pastor at Plainfield, Wisconsin, Monday morning and the body was brought to Austin, arriving at midnight. Services were held here at two o'clock this afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. Shuman officiating. The pall bearers were a brother-in-law, George Chandler, and nephews of the deceased.

Audrey Pauline Pierce, 85, formerly of Rose Creek, Minnesota, died Friday morning, March 2, 2012, at her home in Navarre, Florida.

She was born April 3, 1926, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Henry and Madelia (Wilson) Soder. She grew up in Wells, Minn., where she graduated from Wells High School. Audrey then attended Mankato Teachers College in Mankato, Minn. After completing her education, Audrey taught school in East Chain, Minn., where she met and married Keith Craig Pierce on December 22, 1947, in Wells, Minn. The couple made their home on a farm near East Chain before moving to Rose Creek, Minn.

Keith died on July 4, 1974. After his death, Audrey continued to live in Rose Creek before moving to Austin where she worked at Kid’s Korner and Johnson Floral. In 2006, she moved to Florida to be near her daughter. She enjoyed playing piano and singing as well as gardening. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of London.

Audrey is survived by her children, Mark (Marion) Pierce of Orlando, Florida, Daniel (Carol) Pierce of Brownsdale, Stephen (Kay) Pierce of Manitowoc, Wis., and Laurel (Carlos) Bassart of Navarre; three grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Keith Pierce and a sister, Helen Swenson.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2012, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Pastor Reuben Unseth, officiating. Interment will follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery near East Chain, Minn. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday. Funeral services were held Monday, May 23, 1994 at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center for Mary A. Haren, 73, who passed away May 20, 1994 at her home of natural causes. Pastor George E. Gibson officiated, and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center. The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary was born February 18, 1921 at Lyle, Minnesota, the daughter of John A. and Mabel (Skjevelend) Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed at Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Deer Creek, Iowa.

On October 18, 1954, she was united in marriage to Naaman R. Haren at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waterloo. They made their home on the family farm north of Grundy Center until her death.

Mary was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center until health [problems] limited her activities.

Survivors include her husband Naaman; two brothers, Edward Johnson of Waterloo and Richard Johnson of Humboldt; four sisters, Myrtle A. Johnson of Waterloo, Amy Eslinger of New Hampton, Bernice Gorham of Fairmont, Minnesota, and Crystal Squier of Nora Springs; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Clifford Johnson.

MICHAEL GERHART
COMMITS SUICIDE

Michael Gerhart, 49, committed suicide Monday morning on his farm near Johnsburg, Minnesota, by shooting himself under the left arm with a double-barrelled shotgun. His wife heard the shot and rushed to the house, where she found him dying.

She told Deputy L. Enochson and Cornoner B.C. Cornell that her husband had been brooding over a minor assault charge on which he had been acquitted.

It is said that a neighbor obtained a warrant for Gerhart's arrest, claiming that he had been assaulted. When the case was tried, Justice Cooper found no evidence to indicate an assault, so Gerhart was acquitted.

Funeral services were held Wednesday.

Todd Michael Furtney, 49, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, March 4, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin surrounded by his family.

Todd was born March 27, 1962, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Roy and Terry Furtney. He grew up in Waldorf-Pemberton, Minnesota, where he graduated from high school. After graduation, Todd moved to Monticello, Minn., where he worked as a printer. He was an avid fisherman, whether it was on ice or the open waters, and was a collector of things you didn’t know you needed. Todd was a giver and always smiling and joking. He was the “Live your life out loud” kind of guy who everyone loved being around. Todd often said how he was blessed to be loved by so many people and shared his love for all openly.

Ann J. Jacobsen, 56, died at her home in rural Austin, Minnesota, after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, on Saturday, March 3, 2012.

Ann Jacobsen was born July 23, 1955 in Austin, Minn., to William and Jean (McKinney) Friedrich. She graduated from Austin High School in 1973 and attended a year at Riverland College. She married Stephen Jacobsen on March 30, 1974, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin. She worked at Wells Fargo Bank for 37 years, 20 of which were in the drive thru, and then the next 17 years as lead teller.

Ann was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, “pretend camping” with family, weekends away with the “Volleyball Girls,” watching her grandson play hockey and soccer, and spending time with her family and friends.

Ann is survived by her husband, Stephen Jacobsen, Austin, Minn.; daughter, Andrea (Chris) Luns, Sparta, Wis.; grandson, Casey Luns, Sparta; father, Willie Friedrich (Rosemary Kuether), Austin; sister, Jennifer (Steve) Grobe, Austin; brother, Brian Friedrich (Kristine Jensen), Austin; mother-in-law, Donna Jacobsen, Owatonna, Minn.; brother-in-law, Terry (Nancy) Jacobsen, Stanhope, Iowa; sister-in-law, Sandy Mauer, Albert Lea, Minn.; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

LeOnora M. Kirchdoerfer, 98, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on February 14, 2012.

She was born in Stanwood, Wash., on March 14, 1913. She spent most of her childhood in Irene and Yankton, S.D. She graduated from Augustana College and taught school in South Dakota and Minnesota for several years. She married Woldemar Kirchdoerfer on July 30, 1939. She was an active member and leader in many clubs and service organizations in Austin for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her children, Marguerite (Ted) and Richard (Jeanne), five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.

Jason Philip Wolff, 30, of Grand Meadow, passed away unexpectedly March 5, 2012, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Jason was born Jan. 12, 1982, in Rochester, the son of Bradley and Theresa (King) Wolff. He lived in the Grand Meadow area his entire life and loved the small town lifestyle. He graduated from GMHS in 2000. He was actively involved in his community and served proudly on both the Grand Meadow City Council and Fire Department. He was employed by CHS Elevator in Grand Meadow.

“Wolffy” was one-of-a-kind. He holds a special place in the hearts of his family and friends. He was very curious and adventurous. He enjoyed road trips and visiting other small towns. His interests included road construction projects and railroads.

He is survived by his parents, Bradley and Theresa Wolff, also of Grand Meadow; sister, Lisa (Bret) Klaehn of Chatfield; a nephew, Collin; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Marie and Philip King of McIntire, Iowa, and his paternal grandparents, Delores and Gordon Wolff of Adams.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at St. Finbarr Catholic Church of Grand Meadow with a prayer service starting at 4. Mass of the resurrection will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Mark Catholic Church in Iowa Falls with a 2:30 p.m. graveside service at the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Fall with a 7 p.m. Vigil Service.

Nancy Katherine Schwebke was born Dec. 4, 1938, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Lavalle and Gladys (Kennelly) Apland. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and was united in marriage to Kenneth Schwebke on June 11, 1957, in Parkersburg. She worked as a consultant for Ellsworth Municipal Hospital. Nancy was a member of the St. Mark Catholic Church, St. Mark Sanctuary Society, Bible Study Class and the Garden Club.

Nancy is survived by her two sons, Curtis Schwebke of Boulder Creek, Calif., and Stephen Schwebke (Karla) of Fairmont, Minn.; two daughters, Susan Waldee (Richard) of Austin, Minn., and Lori Mortensen of Faribault; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Judy Swartz (John) of Iowa Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Kenneth.

Services for Ardell (Mrs. Oscar) Johnson, 73, Tallcorn Towers, who died there Tuesday, will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Osage, with the Rev. Walley Rasmussen in charge. Burial will be at First Lutheran cemetery, Saint Ansgar. A prayer service will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Pursel-Davis Chapel. Memorials are directed to the Full Life Ministry.

Mrs. Johnson was born December 10, 1910 in Mower County, Minn., the daughter of Austin and Julia Enerson Austinson. She was reared and educated in the Lyle, Minn. area, graduating from high school in 1929. She was married to Oscar Johnson September 3, 1930, in Austin, Minn. After marriage, they lived in the Otranto and McIntire areas until moving to LeGrand in 1971, and to Marshalltown in 1983. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Osage, and a former member of Elim Lutheran Church in Marshalltown.

She is survived by her husband and a daughter, Ardis Luthe, Marshalltown. Also surviving are two brothers, Mandeville Austinson, Riceville, and Glenn Austinson, Wheaton, Mo.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Funeral services for Mrs. Oscar (Ardell) Johnson, age 73, of Marshalltown, Iowa, were held on Friday, March 16 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. She died Tuesday, March 13, 1984, at her home. Rev. W. Rasmussen of Full Life Ministry and Rev. harold Larson officiated at the service with burial in the First Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar. Champion Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Johnson was a former Osage resident.

Ardell Austinson was born on December 10, 1910 to Austin and Julie Emerson Austinson in Mower county, Minnesota. She was a 1929 graduate of the Lyle High School, Lyle Minnesota.

She was united in marriage to Oscar J. Johnson on September 3, 1930 in Austin, Minnesota. From 1930-1936 they lived in Otranto, from 1936-1971 in McIntire, and from 1971-1982 in Le Grand. They also lived in Osage and then moved to Marshalltown.

Survivors include her husband, Oscar of Marshalltown; one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Ardis) Luthe of Marshalltown; two brothers, Mandeville Austinson of Riceville and Glenn Austinson of Wheaton, Missouri.

Thomas Alfred Camerer, 72, passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2012, at his home in rural Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, surrounded by his family following an eight-and-a-half-month, courageous battle with cancer.

Tom was born December 31, 1939, in Austin, Minnesota, the son of Lloyd and Pearl (Eggestein) Camerer. He spent the first 12 years of his life in Austin, eventually living in Blooming Prairie. He was confirmed in 1958 at First Lutheran Church, Blooming Prairie, and attended school in both Austin and Blooming Prairie public schools. He worked with his step-dad, Axel, in Blooming Prairie in the trucking business and later at the Chevrolet garage. He then worked at A.J. Lysne Contracting Corporation in Owatonna before retiring after 25 years. Tom was a volunteer fireman for Blooming Prairie for many years. Tom was united in marriage to Marcia Kruckeberg on August 10, 1962, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Claremont and they were married for 48 years. Tom loved fishing, especially enjoying his fall Canadian trips with the cousin crew and the Gulf of Mexico fishing excursions with his cousin, Wayne. He also enjoyed picking on his grandchildren, playing cards, wintering in Port Aransas, Texas, and his time spent with family.

Tom is survived by his wife, Marcia, of rural Blooming Prairie; three sons, Wade and Wendy Camerer of Ellendale, Minnesota; Randy of Owatonna, Minnesota; and Barry of Blooming Prairie; four grandchildren; Brooke of Owatonna, Minnesota; Thomas and Brittni of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Cory and Kayley of Ellendale; three brothers, Calvin and Joan Camerer of Andover, Minnesota; Marvin Camerer, of Blooming Prairie; Rick and Nancy Hansen of Blooming Prairie; three sisters, Leone and Billy Vavra and Roxanne and Calvin Boyd, all of Blooming Prairie; and Robin and Pat Berg of Owatonna; Brother-in-law Dale Garness of Blooming Prairie and sister-in-law Sherry Kruckeberg, also of Blooming Prairie and held dear his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-father Eugene (Axel) Hansen, his sisters, Carol Garness and Romell Camerer and brother-in-law Kevin Kruckeberg.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie with Pastor Charlie Leonard officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 12, 2012, at the Worlein Blooming Prairie Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be at Owatonna Memorial Gardens, Owatonna.

Harold “Dick” LeMoyne Allen, 94, who was born November 22, 1917, in London, Minnesota, to Fred Elmer and Martena Louisa (Madsen) Allen, died Friday March 9, 2012, at St. Marks Lutheran Home in Austin.

He graduated from High School in Mitchell, Iowa, in 1935 and was married to Ruth Marie Nelson on August 25, 1942, at the Hayward Lutheran Church, Hayward, Minn. After a short time in the Army, he became the manager of the Speltz Grain Elevator (which later became the Oakland Co-op) in London, where he worked until his retirement in 1980. He was also Vice President of the London State bank from Jan. 20, 1964, until it was sold to the Sterling State Bank in 1991. Dick lived in the London area for most of his life. In 1957 he and his family moved to Austin where he lived until a fall in 2006 resulted in a broken hip which brought him to St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.

He enjoyed working with the London Community, talking with the farmers, fishing, golfing, traveling and being with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Dick will be remembered for his great sense of humor and smiling disposition.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Gladys Allen, sister and brother-in-law, Mavis and Leonard Billedeau, brother-in-law and wife, Harold and Janeth Nelson.

Harold is survived by his wife, Ruth Allen, Austin; children, Sharon Schmeling (Tim Anderson) of Austin; John F. Allen of Schroeder, Minn.; Bonnie Moen (Allison) of Plover, Wis., five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with the Reverend Karen Behling officiating. Interment will be at Woodbury Cemetery, Lyle, Minn. Friends may call at the church from 12:30 p.m. Tuesday until the time of the service.

Ardella Emma (Rauen) Gilles, 88, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center.

Ardella was born April 23, 1923, to Mathias and Emma (Steiger) Rauen in Mitchell County, Iowa. She married Reuben H. Gilles on August 8, 1945 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. This union was blessed with six children: Norma (Charles) Willmarth, Bradenton, Florida, Eileen (Patrick) Hines, Eagle Lake, Minnesota, Harold (Susan) Gilles, Cross Plaines, Wisconsin, Dolores (Garry) Nelson, St. Cloud, Minnesota, Cynthia (John) Vyrostek, Hudson, Wis., Kevin (Juanita) Gilles, Folsom, Calif.

Ardella was employed at St. Oalf Hospital for many years, retiring in 1987. She loved helping her family and grandchildren, friends and neighbors.

Survivors also include 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister, Margret (William) Schneider, Adams, Minnesota; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Hemann, Gloria Gilles; brothers-in-law, Greg Langenfeld, Marlin Krebsbach, Paul (Gertie) Gilles; cousins; nephews and nieces.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Reuben; two brothers, Arthur Rauen and John Rauen; three sisters, Bernata Mullenbach, Isabel Rothamel, Martha Schneider; daughter-in-law, Lani Gilles; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; cousins; nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. There will be a 4:30 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:45 pm wake service on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville, Iowa.

Thomas J. Koeck, 96, of Bloomington, Minnesota, a long time resident of Austin, Minnesota, died March 9, 2012, after a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by Marian, his dear wife of 64 years.

Tom was born May 23, 1915 in Rockfield, Wisconsin. He graduated from Austin High School in 1933 and began his long career in journalism at the Austin Daily Herald. Tom served in the US Army from 1940 to 1945, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He saw action in the European Theatre, including the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he was sports editor for the Herald, then worked for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He returned to the Herald as sports editor in 1963. He continued his career as a columnist, editor and managing editor, then retired in 1980.

He was a past president of the Minnesota Associated Press Association and the First District Editorial Association. He was a gifted writer, editor and mentor. Tom was active in the Lions Club, a member of the First United Methodist Church, Austin and a member for over 50 years of the Austin Country Club. He loved golf, baseball and travel with Marian.

He is survived by his children, Gretchen (Jack) Sjoholm, Jr., St. Paul, Minn. George (Kim) Koeck, Fargo, N.D. and Joann Nordin (Bruce Jones), Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Sarah (Jeffrey) Gorsuch, Kristin Sjoholm, Emily, Zachary, Mackenzie and Marc Koeck and great-grandchildren, Adela Sjoholm, Julia Gorsuch, Eric, Scott and Michael Gorsuch.

Tom will be missed and always remembered by his family, and his many friends from Austin and at Meadow Woods. Memorial service 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 13 at the Chapel at Meadow Woods Assisted Living, 1301 E. 100th St., Bloomington.

Interment of ashes will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Meadow Woods Assisted Living to support resident activities and pastoral care.
