#2:
DEATH OF MR. WAUGH
Walter Scott Waugh of Woodbury died last Friday afternoon, May 5th, after
a brief illness, from paralysis. Mr. Waugh was in town on the day he took
ill apparently in hisusual good health, but on returning home was seized
with a stroke of paralysis from which he never rallied.
Mr. Waugh has been a resident of this county for 28 years. He was born
in Hamilton, Scotland, in 1835, and came with his parents to this country
in 1850. They settled in Wisconsin where he was married in 1866, to Mary
Kilgore. They removed to Minnesota in 1871.
On the evening of April 29th he was stricken with paralysis. He never
regained power to speak but recovered sufficiently to recognize friends.
He held out his hand to them in hours of consciousness. He held the spring
flowers in his hand and showed much pleasure in them. For a time the family
had hopes of his recovery, but on Friday at four o'clock he departed this
life. He leaves a widow and four children; three sons and one daughter.
Mr. Waugh was one of the highly respected citizens of this county. He
held the office of Justice of the Peace for nineteen consecutive years.
The large number of people who gathered in the rain to assist in the final
obsequies, many being obligued to go away for lack of room, testifies to the
standing he held in the community. The coffin was covered with flowers, the
spring flowers that he loved so well, side by side with other beautiful
blossoms. His great love for flowers made these tributes the more highly
appreciated by his family.
The funeral sermon was preached by the pastor of the
Universalist church at Osage, Iowa.

Syvilla “Sally” Christian, 91, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed
away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012.
She was born in Waltham, Minnesota, on October 3, 1920, to
Oscar and Florence (Badenschier) Bakken. Syvilla attended grade school in
Waltham and high school in Austin, Minnesota. She married Edward Christian,
who nicknamed her “Sally.” Together they raised four children on their
southern Minnesota farm. Mom was always busy with gardening and cooking
wonderful meals for family and friends. The folks introduced us kids to
camping, which we always looked forward to doing. After selling the farm in
1966, the folks hooked up their travel trailer and headed west. They fell in
love with Oregon and decided to make Winston their new home. Mom really
enjoyed working as an insurance clerk at Mercy Hospital for many years.
Mom and Dad spent their golden years traveling, camping and fishing. Mom’s
other passion was oil painting. Her family will treasure her pictures for
years to come. Mom and Dad were married for 54 years until his passing in
1991. Years later, Joe Johnson and Mom loved eating out and visiting family
and friends together until Joe passed away.
We would like to give special thanks to Dr. Joel Lee,
Oak Park, Vicky Sanborn and Manor House for all their loving care of our
mother and grandmother. Mom finally got her wish of “falling to sleep and
not waking up.” We shall dearly miss our wonderful mother. May she rest in
peace.
