Harlan Howard Boe, 90, a long time LeRoy area farmer, died Tuesday April 12, 2011, at the Wildwood Assisted Living Center.

Harlan Boe was born November 2, 1920 on a farm in Clayton Township near Taopi, Minnesota, to Simon and Elizabeth (Anderson) Boe, the sixth of 13 children. He attended school at Clayton Prairie School District 74 until he was needed at home to help with farm work. He completed his GED in 1966. In June of 1941 he was united in marriage to Ethel Dumond at the LeRoy Lutheran Church. She died in 1981.

His vivid and vibrant descriptions of the “good old days” brought those days back to life for those who listened. Reminiscing with him was like picking up a history book. Mary Ann Rosella (Kirtz) Jindra

1926-2011

Mary Ann Jindra lost her long battle with cancer and passed away at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, on April 12, 2011, with her husband, John, at her side.

Mary Ann was the youngest child of nine born to Peter and Anna (Volkmann) Kirtz; she was a family present, born Christmas day, 1926. With six sisters and two brothers, Mary Ann was never alone and lived her life surrounded by family around Brownsdale. She lived on the family farm, which at that time was referred to as Kirtz Corner. The home was the focal point for more than 30 children who lived between Mayville and Brownsdale. The children often gathered at the farm to play baseball, football or stickball.

Mary’s father was known as “Re-Pete” and taught Mary at an early age: “If you want something bad enough, you work for it.” It gave Mary a strong work ethic.

Mary Ann met her husband, John F. Jindra, while working at the Chateau Restaurant in Lansing. They married Feb. 6, 1951, in Brownsdale at Our Lady of Loretta Catholic Church.

She had many different jobs spanning her 60-year career. Ranging from an in-home nanny while living at Highland Park, Illinois, to a senior citizen aide taking care of others or a candy sales clerk, even a waitress at the former Chateau Restaurant. After her husband retired, she operated the family farm, raising sheep. As a talented conversationalist and oral historian, when Mary Ann spoke, decades of history about her family and her 65 years of marriage danced from her lips.

Her memory of stories of neighbors, people and community events never dulled — her mind was sharp, clear and detailed until the end. Mary loved sharing the fountain of information from Brownsdale’s past and the people she met throughout her life from Chicago, New York City, Jersey City and Omaha. She will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, Mary Ann.

Survivors include her husband, John Jindra, living on the farm; niece, Darrelyn (James Daughtery) of Tennessee; grandnephews; cousins; many extended family members; numerous friends and special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bachelder of Brownsdale.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Anna Kirtz; infant son, John Peter Jindra; six sisters, Mrs. Kathryn Joyce, Miss Margaret Kirtz, infant, Anna Catherine Kirtz, Miss Verna Margaret Kirtz, Miss Hilda Kirtz, Mrs. Mildred Hoffman; brothers, Harold and Leonard Kirtz.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 15, at Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church in Brownsdale with Father Dale Tupper officiating. At Mary Ann’s request there will be no reviewal. Friends may greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Rose Creek. The family prefers memorials to Infants Remembered in Silence or American Cancer Society. Mark Notestine, 75

1936-2011

Mark was born on April 4, 1936, in Austin, Minnesota, as an only child to Earl Clifford Notestine and Hazel Ana Fawver. As a child, Mark’s family moved to Silver City, N.M., before settling in Colorado Springs, where Mark graduated from Colorado Springs High School (now known as Palmer High) in 1954.

While growing up, Mark loved participating in Boy Scout. He was most proud of his opportunity to attend the 1950 National Boy Scout Jamboree in Valley Forge, Pa., where President Harry S. Truman spoke. After high school, Mark attended the University of Colorado, graduating with a business degree in 1958. In college, Mark was an active member of the Acacia Fraternity, and he remained active as an alumni advisor to his college fraternity throughout his life.

After college, Mark worked at Mountain Bell where he met his wife to be, Jan Coba. After five years with the phone company, Mark’s entrepreneurial spirit drove him to leave his corporate job to start a hardware and supply store in Loveland, Colo., with a former high school buddy.

After a couple of years Mark and his partner sold the store and Mark returned to the phone company where he stayed for the next 25 years. After a two-year stint at AT&T’s corporate headquarters in New York City, Mark and his family retuned to Colorado in Littleton where all four of his children graduated from Columbine High School. Mark was active with the local Optimist Club, which was very fitting for him as the true eternal optimist. During that time, Mark chaired the Colorado Board of Social Services and attained an MBA from Colorado State University.

Mark took advantage of an early retirement and ended his 30-year career with the phone company, retiring as AT&T’s Human Resources Vice President in San Francisco. Mark and Jan decided to move to Greeley in 1995. They had lived in Greeley briefly nearly 30 years beforehand during his early days with the phone company and both decided it was a wonderful place to call home.

After his retirement from AT&T, Mark helped his sons launch a real estate investment company, Thomas & Tyler, LLC. That firm remains active today focusing on downtown Greeley real estate opportunities. Mark was committed to the revitalization efforts of downtown Greeley and was a passionate volunteer and strategic leader for Greeley’s Downtown Development Authority.

Mark also had a great appreciation for historic preservation and served as a Board Member for Historic Boulder, Inc., Colorado Preservation, Inc. and he was actively involved in multiple historic rehabilitation projects. Mark’s passion for history led him to research his family tree, and over the years he compiled an impressive genealogical account. Mark was an active member of the Greeley Rotary Club and a member of the First Congregational Church. Mark loved chocolate, poker, life, and above all his family. After many years fighting chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Mark passed away at Swedish Hospital in Denver on April 16, 2011.
