1921-2011

Adam Joseph Allas, 89 years, 10 months, 7 days, of Lansing, passed away from complications of Alzheimers, March 31, 2011, at Faribault Care Center.

His father, Andrew, came to America through Ellis Island with the first four children to make a better life for his family, and for freedom in America. Adam was born in Topeka, Kan., May 24, 1921, to Andrew Joseph and Elizabeth (Kuhn) Allas. Siblings include Gertie Greenlee, Alexander (Hippo) Allas, Peter Allas, John Allas, John Kuhn, Evercina Pagenkoph, Florentina Frein, Rose Marie Allas, and Sylvester Allas. The family moved to Austin when Adam was a child. Mr. Allas started to work for George A. Hormel Company when he was 17 years old. He proudly served for our freedoms of democracy, three years in the United States Air Force. Upon returning after WWII, Adam continued to work for Hormel (43 years) until his retirement April 30, 1982. He was United in marriage to Marian E. Cerny, January 25, 1947, at St. Augustine Catholic Church of Austin. To this blessed union were four children, 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren:

Linda (Maynard) Huemann of Elgin, Minn., Travis (Lana) Huemann, Dillon, Riley, Garett, Mason, Natalie, Troy (Lynn) Huemann, Mackenna, Devin, Vanessa (Jared) Sagdalen, Elliana, Seth, Valerie Huemann (friend, James Hart); Loren (Cynthia) Allas of Austin, Christina Moser, Kirsten Stehlik and Ethan Moser, Carmen May, Aubrey Mullenbach; Luanne (Bill) Blowers of Waterville, Minn., Lori (Brian) Mock, Lilian, Bobbi (Clinton) Peach, Miya, Jaden, Edward (Kathy) Blowers, Lucas; Lynn (Kristine) Allas of Lansing, Andrew Jacob Allas, and Emily Allas.

Weekends and vacations were spent with Marian and the family, at the cabin on Tetonka Lake. Adam delighted in cooking for family and friends, making enough for an army. Working with his son, Lynn, he would help clean the shop, work with wood and create his own projects. He took pleasure in playing Solitaire, photography and fishing. Adam loved children and being with people. He would carry suckers in his pocket to hand out to kids — big and small. Despite his memory he took great pleasure in being a jokester to the end. His favorite name to call others was Yahootee.

Surviving are his wife, Marian Allas; children; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Florentina (Flossy) Frein; brother, Sylvester Allas. Sister-in-laws, Gladys Allas and Dorothy Winn; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Kittleson, Hans B. 1878-1899
OBITUARY

Hans B. Kittleson was born at Kroger, Norway, June 11th, 1878 and died at Whitten, Iowa, of typhoid fever on May 5th, 1899, aged nearly 21 years.

The deceased was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kittleson, and was left an orphan in infancy, his mother dying when he was but two years of age and his father a couple of years later. He and a little sister were thus thrown on the mercy of the world at a tender age.

His sister the only member of the family now remaining, was adopted by a family in Minneapolis where she still resides and Hans was taken and cared for by Mrs. Olson and subsequently by Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Olson with whom he made his home until a year ago when he left to accept a position as operator on the Chicago & Northwestern.

Hans Kittleson was beloved by all who knew him. He was bright, intelligent and of a kind and modest disposition. There was no kinder-hearted boy -- courteous and gentlemanly in his conduct towards all; he had the friendship of everyone. He had the qualities for making of a good man. He had character and was upright, industrious and ambitious. Too ambitious, poor boy. Ambition killed him. He would not abandon his post even when sick, until his malady had almost reached a fatal stage.

The funeral was held from the Congregational church Sunday a.m., Rev. Gram preaching the sermon. Six boys from among the friends of the deceased acted as pall bearers. The large attendance of friends, schoolmates and companions attested their love and affection for him and their unfeigned sorrow for his untimely death. The remains were buried at Six Mile Grove.

Henrietta Eggen

1844-1899

Henrietta Eggen b. 8-01-1844 d. 11-06-1899

DIED--

On Monday morning, November 6th, at four o'clock, at the homestead two miles east of town, Mrs. J. M. Eggen, wife of Rev. J. M. Eggen, pastor of th elutheran Church.

Mrs. Eggen had been in poor health for some time but nevertheless her death was a sudden blow to all who were intimately acquainted with her. They least expected that the end would come so soon. On Sunday evening she was taken with one of her bad spells, caused by heart failure, and this was shortly followed by another sinking spell, after which she went into a stupor from which it was impossible to arouse her.

So sweetly and so quietly did she depart this life that even those of her family that were near her bedside could scarcely tell when the last breath was drawn. Not a tinge of pain nor a sign of suffering could be traced upon her countenance as silently she lay there sleeping.

The funeral occured yesterday at the church at Six Mile Grove, and the interment was made in the churchyard. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in this vicinity. Hundreds of people were there from Lyle and vicinity, from Adams, from Austin and from St. Ansgar.

There were two services. One in Norwegian conducted by Rev. Olson of St. Ansgar and the other by his son. The church was very beautifully and tastefully decorated, and several floral tributes, gifts of sympathizing friends were in evidence.

The deceased is well a favorably known in this community, and the loss will be felt among a wide circle of friends. She came with her husband to this place when he took the pastorate of the Adams, Mona and Six Mile Grove congregations, and during that time has enshrined herself in the affections of the people.

Mary Sutherland

1809-1899

OBITUARY

Mrs. Mary Sutherland of Otranto Station died last Friday night at the advanced age of 91 years. She has been quite feeble for some time past, but was able to be about the house until the day of her death.

She was one of the oldest settlers in this part of the country, coming to Old Otranto in 1865. About three years after the family had moved here, Mr. Sutherland died, leaving the mother with a large family of children. She soon broke up housekeeping and went to live with some of them, and for a long time has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. A. Woodley of Otranto Station.

She was born in Lancaster, Canada in 1809 and it was there she spent the early part of her life. For a short time before coming here the family sojourned in Dane County, Wisconsin, but their stay there was short compared with that of her after residence in this part of the country.

She leaves five children to mourn her loss, Mr. Joseph Sutherland of Lincoln, Nebraska, Walter of Spokane, Washington, Mrs. Riblet of Aberdeen, South Dakota, Mrs. Campbell of DeForest, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Woodley.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. D. W. Cram. There was a short services at the house and then another service following in the church. The remains were interred at the Woodbury cemetery by the side of her husband and youngest son. It was one of the desires she had expressed, that she might be laid to rest beside them. The family wish to thank the many friends for the many ways in which their sympathy was manifested in the hour of their bereavement.
