Adda Johnston Williams1885-1927
MRS. WILLIAMS RITES THURSDAY
Kin to Attend Funeral of Victim of Steam Pipe Accident
Funeral services for Mrs. Claude Williams, who met a tragic death
yesterday in the rooms of the Unique Cleaning Shop when a plug in the
steam pipe leading from the street gave way, will be held at 3 p.m.
Thursday afternoon from the Baptist church.
Her daughter, Peggy, and an aunt will arrive here this afternoon from
Denver, Colorado, according to a message received this morning by Mr.
Williams.
A twin sister of Mrs. Williams will arrive in St. Paul from Livingston,
Montana, at 9 p.m. Wednesday night and will be brought to Austin by
automobile. Her youngest brother will arrive from Trinidad, Colorado,
Thursday morning.
BORN IN IOWA
Mrs. Williams, whose maiden name was Adda Johnston, was born on July
23, 1885 at Corning, Iowa, where she lived until shortly before her marriage
to Claude Williams at Fort Pierre, South Dakota. Mr. and Mrs. Williams have
lived in Austin for the last six years, coming here from Charles City, where
Mr. Williams was for twelve years connected with Interstate Power Company.
Mrs. Williams was a member of the Baptist Church and of the order of
American Yeomen.
Rumors of an inquiry into the cause of the accident by a coroner's jury
were set aside with an announcement by Dr. H. F. Peirson, coroner, that the
cause of death was so apparent that the need for further investigation was
not apparent. "There was no indication of culpable neglect," the coroner
added. That the plug in the steam line being tested was defective or of
too light a material was evident as it is customary for testing to be done
in this way and never before in the history of the firm of Bain and Robb
has such an accident occurred.
ACCIDENT UNPRECEDENTED
Ordinarily the pressure on the pipes leading into a store or dwelling is
from 2 to 5 pounds, according to M. T. Bain of the contracting firm. Around
thirty pounds of pressure is put on the pipes to discover leaks, but this
is only an ordinary pressure for the mains and under usual circumstances
does not constitute any danger.
Any fears of using the steam from the central plant may be quickly
dispelled when it is known that the pressure into homes and stores is
never more than five pounds, it was said, and accidents of the kind which
occurred here yesterday are so rare as to be almost unknown to the engineers.

Henry Waldron (1865-1913)
