MRS. MELVIN FRANCIS

LEROY, MINNESOTA - Services for Mrs. Melvin Francis, 53, a former resident of Osage, who died Saturday morning at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, following a short illness, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Evangelical Lutheran Church in LeRoy. Burial will be in the LeRoy Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Ronald [Sharon] Canny of Osage; a son, Dale of LeRoy, Minnesota, three grandchildren; eight brothers and sisters.

Martha H. (Dreyer) Francis was the daughter of Henry Karl Dreyer and Emilie Minnie Jacob. She married Melvin Edward Francis, the son of Otha Wavis Francis and Wanda Elizabeth Lundy.

Her husand, Melvin was born September 30, 1918 and died December 3, 1997 in Eustis, Lake County, Florida. After Martha's death, Melvin married Harriet.

Dorothy "Jeanne" Winslow

1927-2010

Dorothy Jeanne Winslow, age 83, of Austin, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at Cedarview Care Center in Owatonna.

Jeanne was born on May 11, 1927, to Dr. Joseph and AdElla (Compton) Winslow in LaMoure, N.D. After graduating from high school, she attended Jamestown College in Jamestown, N.D., and then transferred to North Dakota State in Fargo. When she completed her degree work, she taught in North Dakota for a few years before transferring to Minnesota teaching in Hancock and Alexandria before coming to Austin in 1958. She also earned her Master’s Degree at Iowa State in Ames. Jeanne taught Home Economics at Ellis until retiring in 1989.

Jeanne loved to travel. She made the world more beautiful, too, with her flower gardening and decorated the Fellowship Hall in the Presbyterian Church every Sunday with those flowers and many other types of decorations that she gathered together, trying to use different things every Sunday as well as on special occasions.

Jeanne was a member of P.E.O., Chapter BZ, the Hospital Auxiliary, Austin Area Retired Teachers, the Mower County Historical Society, Presbyterian Women of the Congregation, and various other giving organizations. She also had many, many friends who shared their time and prayers with her through the long months of hospitalization and nursing home time battling her cancer condition.

She is survived by her sister Martha Myhrum of Michigan and her twin sister Jane Johnson of Iowa City as well as her sister-in-law Elaine Winslow of Idaho. She was a favorite Auntie Jeanne, always full of energy, gifts in hand, and creative to encourage family relationships for her 30 nieces and nephews. Few of them recognized differences between her and her lifetime identical twin sister, Jane. She is also survived by a friend of many years, Jo Knobel.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Dr. Joseph H. Winslow and her mother AdElla Winslow, her brothers: Harold, Donald, and Charles, her sisters: Ruth Mary and Joan.

The celebration honoring Jeanne’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 4 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Andrew M. Lindahl officiating.

Deanna Mildred (Hanson) Tischer

1941-2010

Deanna Mildred Tischer, 69, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Friday, Sept. 24, 2010 at the Adams Health Care Center, Adams, Mower county, Minnesota.

Deanna was born on January 11, 1941 in Austin, to Alvin and Mildred (Kolpin) Hanson. She graduated from Austin High School in 1959. On November 19, 1960 she married David Tischer at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Deanna enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, ceramics, visiting with her card club friends and spending time at the lake. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Deanna is survived by her husband David Tischer, Austin, Minnesota; children: Kevin (Lori) Tischer, Rochester, Minnesota, Alan (Michele) Tischer, Austin, Minnesota, Elizabeth (Robert) Fredrickson, Elko, Minnesota, James (Kimberly) Tischer, Oakland, Minnesota, Michael (Susanne) Tischer, Austin, Minnesota; grandchildren: Lucas, Dylan, Katey, Logan, and Isaac; sisters: Patricia Magee, Cynthia Hinkle, and Suzanne Hoffman; brothers Dave Hanson and John Hanson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Duane Hanson.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Reverend Ron Barnett officiating. Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the service on Tuesday.

Patricia “Pat” Jean (Geise) Wiseman

1923-2010

Patricia “Pat” Jean (Geise) Wiseman, 87, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, surrounded by her family.

Pat was born Sept. 1, 1923 in Henry, S. D. to Frederick and Loa Geise. Pat graduated from Austin High School in 1942. On May 6, 1943, she married the love of her life Daniel “Danny” Wiseman at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. She and Danny founded Wiseman Coin Company in the 1950’s. The business took them to coin shows all over the country, and they made many friends throughout their travels. In addition, they were founding members of the Minnesota Organization of Numismatists (MOON). Pat served as MOON’s secretary many years.

A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, she cherished spending time with her family. All who know her treasured her bigger-than-life personality, quick wit, and infectious smile. Pat was passionate about life, always setting goals for herself. In 1990 at the age of 66, she graduated from Austin Community College with an Associate of Arts Degree, completing her longtime dream of becoming a college graduate. Upon completion of her degree, she continued to take classes through the college’s senior learning program.

Pat was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church and a past member of the St. Nona’s Circle. She was a member of the Eagles, past Mother and Grandmother of the Eagles Auxiliary and member of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her children: Mary (Robert) Boysen, Denver; James (Jean) Wiseman, Merrill, WI; Suzanne (Ronald) Stowell, Denver; Loretta (Roger) Morgan, Winona; David Wiseman, Austin; Steven (Darci) Wiseman, Austin; Carol Conner, Austin; and Cheryl (Ronald) Brady, Austin; 26 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Strange; sister-in-law, Olive Wiseman; sister and brother-in-law, Jim and Victoria Schulte; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Daniel; sons: Richard and infant boy; grandson, John Wiseman; great-grandson, Daniel Bollinger; brother, Gordon Geise; brother-in-law, Robert Wiseman; brother and sister-in law; Max and June Grimley; special aunt and uncle, Victor and Zoe Pickett.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10 a.m., October 1, 2010 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m., Thursday at Worlein Funeral Home with an Eagles Memorial Service at 5:30 p.m., an Eastern Star Service at 7 p.m. and a Rosary Service at 8 p.m. Visitation is also at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday. Marlene Mary (Morgan) Mortensen

1945-2010

Marlene Mary “Molly” Mortensen, age 64, of Austin, Minnesota, died at Adams Healthcare Center Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010.

She was born Dec. 17, 1945 to Max B. and Mary (Jicha) Morgan in Austin. Shortly after Molly was born, the family moved to Lyle where Molly graduated from high school in 1964. She married James Farnsworth in 1967 in NV. They returned to Lyle in 1969 and moved to Austin in 1970. The couple had four children and were later divorced. Molly married David Mortensen on Sept. 21, 1974 in Mapleview. A certified nursing assistant, she worked for 20 years at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center and for a year and a half at Our House. A lifetime member of VFW Auxiliary, she served for two years as the Cancer Chairperson in Lyle, crocheting many projects for them, including a giant queen size flag donated to the Lyle Cancer Telethon. She enjoyed time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, David of Austin; sons, Patrick (Julie) Farnsworth of Austin; Merwyn Farnsworth of Austin; Edward Potter of Windom; David Allen Mortenson, Jr. of Minneapolis; daughters: Mary (Kerry) Wolf of Buffalo, Wyoming; Margaret (Branden) Aker of Austin; Tammy (Lenny) Potter of Windom; 20 grandchildren; two brothers: Myron (Ruth Ann) Morgan of Byron; Merwyn Morgan of Lyle; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jay and Nancy Jessen; nephew, nieces, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with The Rev. Dr. Stephen DeFor officiating. Friends may call from 4-7:00 p.m., Friday and one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery.

Ordean Norlen Oakland

1936-2000

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA - The funeral for Ordean Norlen Oakland, 64, of Austin, will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Faith Lutheran Church in London, Minn., with the Rev. Einar Unseth and Roger Campbell officiating. Interment will be at the London Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, 1415 N. Highway 13 in Albert Lea, and one hour before services on Friday at the church.

Ordean Norlen Oakland was born August 18, 1936, to Orlen Tilden and Mildred Orva (Sorbo) Oakland near Emmons, and was delivered by his great-grandmother, Clara Flaten. He attended country schools in Myrtle and London and graduated from Austin High School, where he won several FFA awards.

On August 5, 1962, Ordean was united in marriage to Evelyn Ann Beers in Iowa. He farmed in the Austin area for 43 years.

Ordean loved collecting antiques and going to auctions. He had several collections. He enjoyed watching sports, particularly the Vikings and the Twins. He also enjoyed studying the Old West.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; children, Rick Warrington, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Renee Graceffa and her husband, Frank, of Laguna Nigel, Calif., Linda Ellingson and her husband, John, of Lake Mills, Mary Bjerk and her friend, Dan, of Owatonna, and Don Wrolson and his wife, Judy, of Hampton; a brother, Mervin Oakland, of Glenville; and sister, Shirley Dissell and her husband, Bob, of Red Wing, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews.

Ordean was preceded in death by his mother and father, one nephew and one niece.

Mildred (Perkins)(Watt) James

1916-2010

Mildred Watt James, 93, died Sept. 27, 2010, at Austin Medical Center surrounded by her loved ones.

Mildred was born on Oct. 19, 1916, in Barton Township, Worth County, Iowa to Clifford and Ida (Johnson) Perkins. She was baptized and confirmed at Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Iowa. She graduated as class valedictorian in 1934 from Otranto High School in Iowa. She moved to Austin to work where she met and married Donald Loren Watt on Oct. 31, 1935 and together they had six children. They divorced in 1968. She married Joseph James in 1974 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church where she had been a member since she moved to Austin in 1935. She worked at Hormel Corp. for 27 years before retiring in 1974. She enjoyed her family, bowling, playing cards, bingo, crocheting afghans, quilting, entertaining her family and friends at her lake home, fishing and trips to the casinos.

Survivors include her children: Joanne Clark, Bloomington; Edward (Susan) Watt, Hemet, Calif.; Bonnie Peterson, Austin; Marilyn Watt, Minnetonka; Donna (Richard) Rohrbacher, Charlestown, Mass., and Highland Beach, Florida; and daughter-in-law, Shirley Watt, Austin; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Irma and Dorothy Perkins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; son, Richard Watt; granddaughter, Catherine Clark; sisters: Hazel Glassel, Doris Hollerud Lee; brothers: Clinton, Lloyd and Warren Perkins.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 1st at 11 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Reverend Ron Barnett officiating. Friends may greet the family at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery.

Mae (Usem) Averbook

ca.1916-2010

#1:

Mae Usem Averbook, age 94, passed away peacefully in her home in North Miami, Florida, on September 23, 2010, of pancreatic cancer.

She is survived by her loving family -- three sons: Daniel (Ellen), Arthur (Marcy), and Charles (Debbie) Averbook; seven grandchildren—Sara (Jarret) Kaplan, Margo (Yechiel) Rosman, Amy (Jon) Karnilow, Joey (Danna) Averbook, Rebecca (Bryce) Gilbert, Jennifer Averbook and Michael Averbook; four great-grandchildren: Gabriella, Avi and Atara Rosman and Samuel Sherman Kaplan; and her sister in-law, Anita Averbook Ravage, who is 102.

Mae Averbook was the youngest of six children. Her parents were originally from, Kiev, Ukraine. Her four brothers, one of whom was Ed Usem, founder of Usem Chevrolet, and her sister preceded her in death. Thomas Sherman, Ed Usem’s grandson, still operates Usem Chevrolet. She still has over 50 nieces, nephews, and cousins with whom she remained in regular contact.

She was born in Austin, married David Averbook, and together they operated Averbook’s Department Store, the Austin Hotel, and, for several years, the Alcove restaurant. She and David moved to Miami in 1973, where they jointly operated Raphael’s Stained Glass Studio for almost 20 years. Mae and David were married for 67 years. Mae’s favorite place was in the kitchen, where she was famous for her beautiful presentations as well as magic bars, chocolate chip cookies, and other delicious goodies which she distributed regularly to those she loved. She also had what seemed like a personal relationship with potted flowers and plants, which happily flourished in her home and on her balcony. Her compassion, interest in others, and her nurturing and friendly nature created friends of all ages. Mae was an active dedicated volunteer to many organizations including Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Woman, Zonta and the Pilot Club. Mae leaves a legacy of proud parenting, proper protocol, music, laughter, education, the joy of cooking, doing your best and always maintaining a positive mental attitude.

He was killed in a one-car accident on Tuesday.

Funeral services for Lois A. Mahoney, age 91, of Osage, were held Monday, June 12, 2006, at First Presbyterian Church in LeRoy, Minnesota, with the Rev. Neal Solomonson officiating. Burial was in the LeRoy Cemetery. Lois passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Manly, Iowa.

Survivors include her three sons: Donald (Carol) of New Hampton, Larry (Janice) of Osage, and Richard (Cindy) of Rochester, Minn; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren; a brother and a sister.

Helen J. (Simon) Reinartz

1911-2010

Helen J. Reinartz, 99, passed away on Sept. 28, 2010, at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield.

Helen was born on May 22, 1911 in Nevada Township, Mower County, to Nicholas Ulwelling and Eva Gertrude Simon. Helen was employed as a Hot Lunch Cook at St. Edward’s grade school. She married Frank Reinartz on May 28, 1938 at St. Augustine Church in Austin.

Helen was active in the Rosary Society at the St. Augustine parish. She also enjoyed sewing, baking and watching the Minnesota Twins. Helen is survived by her one daughter, Mary (Phil) Grunewald of Rochester; three grand-children: Martha Pease of Austin; Hank Grunewald of Rochester; and Sarah (Brian) Miller of Chatfield; eight great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank (who passed away in 1961); two sisters and one brother.

A funeral Mass is planned for 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin, with the Rev. Joseph B. Fogal officiating. Honorary Pallbearers are Martha Pease, Hank Grunewald, and Sarah and Brian Miller. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Austin.

Harriet Elyce (Swatosh) Baier

1924-2010

Harriet Elyce Baier, 86, of Ely passed away on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at the Ely Bloomenson Nursing Home.

She was born on Sept. 9, 1924, in Austin, Minnesota to Frank and Echo (Messenger) Swatosh. On Nov. 15, 1942, she married Robert Baier and they lived in Brownsdale, Minnesota for nine years until moving to Austin, and had been Ely residents since 1967.

Elyce was a homemaker and owned and operated the Dew-Drop-In in Austin.

Elyce is survived by her husband, Robert Baier, Sr., of Ely; four children, Elizabeth (Donald) Peterson of Austin, Robert (Sheryll) Baier, Jr., of Ely, Patricia (Raymond) Marsnik of Ely and Barbara (Steven) Fultz of Babbitt; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; eight siblings: Delbert (Arlene) Swatosh of Seattle, David Swatosh of Minneapolis, Thomas (Judy) Swatosh of Golden Valley, Minnesota, Jean (Dick) Tourville of Ely, Catherine (David) Buxton of Austin, James Swatosh of Minneapolis, John (Priscilla) Swatosh of St. Louis, and Linda (Robert Distad) Messenger of Minneapolis.

Elyce was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Frank Swatosh.

The family would like to thank the Ely Nursing Home staff for the excellent care and compassion shown to Elyce and her family.

Per her request, there will be no formal service. A gathering of family and friends will be from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at the First Lutheran Church in Ely. Arrangements are with the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia, Minnesota.

Lois Avon (Nuetzmann) Kneeskern

1930-2010

Lois Avon Kneeskern, 80, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

Lois was born June 8, 1930 in Austin to Oscar and Tina (Sanvick) Nuetzmann. She graduated from Austin High School. On November 23, 1950 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Robert Kneeskern at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Lois was a retired employee of Hormel Foods and a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Lois enjoyed ceramics, bowling, embroidery and spending time with her family on the lake.

Lois is survived by her husband, Kenneth Kneeskern, Austin; sons, Steve (Deb) Kneeskern, Austin; Greg Kneeskern, Austin; Eric Kneeskern, Austin; daughter, Renee (Alan) Aswegan, Lyle; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Lowell (Mary) Nuetzmann, Fremont, Nebraska; sisters, Marylyn Martin, Hudson, Wisconsin; Cathy Smith, Baudette; and Donna (Richard) Maxwell, New Jersey.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; mother-in-law and father-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and a grandson.

Alton Knutson

(died 1961)

Ex-St. Ansgar Man’s Body is Found in Canada

St. Ansgar, Iowa - The body of a former Iowan who drowned in Canada last fall will be returned to Austin, Minnesota, for burial.

The victim was Alton Knutson, formerly of St. Ansgar.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Knutson, St. Ansgar, have been notified the body was found Sunday by a search party near the site of the Ontario fishing accident last fall which caused the drownings of Knutson; Virgil Adrian, formerly of Osage and Carpenter, but whose home was in Baudette, Minnesota; and their guide. The two other bodies were found earlier.

The search party found Knutson’s body in Packwash Lake near Earl Falls, Ontario.

Beverlee Ann (Haskin) Starry

1941-2010

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA - Beverlee Ann Starry, 69, of Austin, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, surrounded by her loving family on Saturday evening, Oct. 2, 2010, at her home after a brave and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born August 24, 1941 in Austin to Ernest and Vesta (Clayton) Haskin. She was raised in Austin along with her five brothers and four sisters.

Beverlee Ann graduated from Austin High School in 1960. On June 12, 1965 she was united in marriage to Donald Eugene Starry Sr. at the First United Methodist Church in Austin. Donald and Beverlee were blessed with three children. They made their home in Austin where Donald worked for Hormel and Beverlee was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker.

Beverlee’s faith in the Lord was important to her along with her family. She had a magnetic personality and always acknowledged everyone with a kind word and beautiful smile.

She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren, enjoyed feeding the birds and animals, watching sports and playing cards with her family. Beverlee also enjoyed her special pet, Hampton.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Eugene Starry Sr., Austin; sons and daughters-in-law: Don and Joni Starry, Becker; Dan and Jeanice Starry, Somerset, Wisconsin; daughter, Jacqueline Starry, Austin; six grandchildren: Justin, Alli, Bethany, Courtney, Megan and Jaedyn; four brothers: Lloyd Haskin, Independence, Iowa; James (Jean) Haskin, Dunkerton, Iowa; Ernest C. (Rose) Haskin, Denver, Iowa; Harold (Sharon) Haskin, Hackensack; two sisters: Dorothy (Harvey) Todalen, Austin; Velma Bonnerup, Albert Lea; sister-in-law, Sharron Haskin, Waterloo, Iowa; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Kenneth Haskin; two sisters and their husbands, Eleanor and Fred Lickteig, Arlis and Ronald Snyder; sister-in-law, Jeanne Haskin; very best friend, Ruthie Folie.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 am on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Pat Toschak officiating. Friends may call from 4-7 pm on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, south of Austin.

Esther Mae Quam

1923-2010

Esther Mae Quam, 87, formerly of Austin, died early Sunday morning, October 3, 2010 at Regency Hospital in Golden Valley.

She was born March 14, 1923 to Clarence and Lydia (Larsen) Halvorson in St. Ansgar, Iowa where she grew up and graduated from high school. After receiving her teaching degree at Waldorf College, she taught school in the St. Ansgar area. She married Melvin Quam on July 6, 1945 in St. Ansgar. In 1947, they moved to Austin where Esther worked part-time with her husband at Service Printing. One of the founding members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin, Esther enjoyed quilting, crocheting, playing cards and games. Esther and Melvin liked to dance and spend time with their family and friends. The couple moved to Backus when they retired.

Esther is survived by two sons: Gary Quam of Eden Prairie and Gene (Joyce) Quam of Big Fork; two daughters: Carol (Thomas) Reitsma of Waconia and Janet (Lee) Phillippe of Plymouth; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Alton (Allene) Halvorson of St. Ansgar, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Betty Halvorson of Casa Grande, AZ; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin; an infant son, David and a brother, Gerald Halvorson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Karen Behling officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, is in charge of arrangements. Interment is at Rose Creek Enterprise Cemetery, rural Austin. Helen Serene Marie “Lee” Planz, 79, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday afternoon, October 3, 2010 at Austin Medical Center.

She was born July 1, 1931 to Howard and Martha (Skaug) Olson in Austin, where she grew up and graduated from high school in 1949. Helen married Eugene “Andy” Anderson, and they were later divorced. She lived in Brownsdale until 1972 when she moved to Austin. She worked at Cedar One as a childcare supervisor. On September 19, 1992, she married Hugo Planz at Fellowship United Methodist Church where she was a member. A people person, Helen enjoyed having coffee with people and loved entertaining, cooking, playing cards, spending time with her grandchildren and golfing. She had two holes in one.

Helen is survived by her husband, Hugo of Austin; daughter, Dawn (Tom) Morehouse of Austin; son, Steven Anderson of Austin; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four stepchildren: Lynda (Joseph) Hodges of Austin; Myrna Kruckeberg of Austin; Steven (Bobbie) Planz of Springfield, Missouri and Debra (Pat) Perkins of New Brighton; six step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 7, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in Austin with The Reverend Patricia Toschak officiating. Joseph Donald Burzinski

1923-2010

Joseph Donald Burzinski, 87, longtime resident of Austin, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010 with family at his side.

Joe was born April 25, 1923 in Austin to Frederick and Helen (Wallace) Burzinski. After graduating from Pacelli High School he began work at the Hormel Company where he remained for 44 years. During a furlough from the Army he and Mary Ann Krokos were married at Queen of Angels Catholic Church on Flag Day, June 14, 1944. Married for 68 years, Mary Ann died in 2009.

Joe was a World War II veteran, Purple Heart recipient and an active member of the American Legion. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and trapshooting. Joe also loved playing cards of 500, home carpentry, woodworking, small engine repair and could play a mean harmonica.

Survivors include his sister, Mary (Robert) Maher, Emmons; son, Jerry Burzinski; daughter, Judy (Clint) Lueck, Medina; sons: David Burzinski, Monticello; John Burzinski, Maple Grove; Brian Burzinski, Jordan; Mark Burzinski, Austin; Dean Burzinski, Austin; seven grandchildren: Jason Burzinski, Rachael Hamilton, Scott Johnson, Bridget Burzinski, Nicholas Burzinski, Jacob Burzinski, Matthew Burzinski; and one great-granddaughter, Olivia Hamilton.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Kristine Catherine; three brothers: William, Robert, and Richard; nephew, Steven; andgrand-niece, Kelly Christine Maher.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 4p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91.

The casket bearers will be David Burzinski, John Burzinski, Brian Burzinski, Dean Burzinski, Clint Lueck, Jacob Burzinski, Mark Burzinski.

Donna Mae (Scrabeck) Howley

1928-2010

Donna Mae Howley, 82, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Kennedy Park Nursing Home in Weston, Wisconsin.

Donna was born May 14, 1928 in Austin to Reuben and Agnes Scrabeck. On Dec. 28, 1948 she was united in marriage to John C. Howley in Austin. Donna was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Donna is survived by her husband, John Howley; children: Tuti (Jeff) McEwen; Bob (Kim) Howley; Jim (Susan) Howley; Sally (John) Robson; 14 grandchildren; two-great grandchildren; sister, Arlys (Bob) Hope; brothers, Odell (Betty) Scrabeck, and Gary (Jean) Scrabeck.

She was preceded in death by her son, Dan.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Wednesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4-7 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. John David Silver

1939-2010

John David Silver, 71, died on September 21, 2010. John lived a life of his choosing, neither too long nor too short, and in a manner befitting his sense of personal values.

He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on July 26, 1939. After growing up in Cedar Rapids, the family moved to Austin. John graduated from Austin High School in 1957. He joined the military; his time was spent in Germany from 1957 until 1960.

Returning home from the service, John chose to locate in Garrison, Minnesota. He then became a cement finisher, working and living in Atlanta, Georgia, for several years. After his retirement he concentrated on his home in Garrison, bought an extra lot and went ice fishing.

John is survived by four siblings: sister, Jo Ann Lawson; sister, Mary Zino, Phoenix; sister, Marilyn Tynes, Anoka and brother, Lynn Edward Silver, Brooklyn Park. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

A memorial will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at the American Legion in Deerwood from 2-4 p.m.

Albert J. Yoder

1934-2010

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA - Albert J. Yoder, 76, died at his home in rural Austin on October 4, 2010.

Albert was born on July 17, 1934, the son of John and Lena (Miller) Yoder, Jr. in Kalona, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Cleola Miller on September 23, 1954, in Kalona, Iowa. The couple resided in Kalona, Iowa and in 1972, they moved to Princeton, Missouri, 1977 to Richland Center, Wisconsin, and the last 26 years in rural Austin. Albert farmed in all of these areas. He enjoyed raising hogs and was a semi driver for 11 years.

Albert is survived by his wife, Cleola Yoder, Austin; son, Leslie (Brenda) Yoder, Constantine, Michigan; two daughters: Grace (Nelson) Troyer and Rose (Nate) Miller, both of Apple Creek, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers: Rueben Yoder, Kalona, Iowa; Simon (Mary Susan) Yoder, Keota, Iowa and Dennis (Judith) Yoder, Kalona, Iowa; four sisters: Ida (Willard) Yoder, Kalona, Iowa; Anna Mae (Lester) Coblentz, Princeton, Kentucky; Emma (Cephas) Yoder, Kalona, Iowa and Nina (William) Bontrager, Millersburg, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Lydia Borntrager; Amelia Yoder and Mary Yoder.

The funeral service for Albert J. Yoder will be 10 a.m. Friday, October 8, 2010, at Fairview Mennonite Church in Kalona, with Pastor Dennis Martin, Pastor Arnold Skrivseth and Pastor Perry Miller co-officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Mennonite Church Cemetery in Kalona, Iowa.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home 501 2nd Street NW in Hayfield.

Edna M. (nee Tiegen) Braaten

1918-2010

Edna M. Braaten, 91, of Austin, Minnesota, went to meet her Lord and Savior in the early morning hours of October 9, 2010, at the Fieldcrest Care Center, Hayfield.

Edna was born on November 12, 1918 at Ambrose, North Dakota, the daughter of Mike and Martha (Ellingson) Tiegen. She attend public school in North Dakota. At the age of 18, she and her sister Clara moved to Adams to live with relatives. While there they became acquainted with Helen Braaten Fahje. Helen would invite Edna and Clara to the Braaten family farm for weekends and while at a dance one weekend Edna met George Braaten. They were married August 30, 1940, at the Lutheran Church in Osage, Iowa. Edna was a home maker and worked at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester.

She was a member of the Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church and the Naomi Circle. Edna had many hobbies, including, fishing, hunting and traveling with friends. She also did crocheting, quilting, canning and was well known for her and George’s lefse baking each fall.

She was preceded in death by her husband George on June 28, 2010, her parents, a granddaughter, Sara Boleyn, sisters, Amanda, Mabel and Clara and brothers, Edwin and Melvin.

Edna is survived by her daughters, Shirley (Leon) Kruse, Ft. Atkinson, Iowa, Dorothy Jean Titus, Washington, Illinois, special niece, Bev Pitcher, Austin, nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Alice Tiegen, Long Prairie, Minnesota, Bernice (Sylvester) Thompson, Austin, Ann Hemenway, Missoula, Montana, cousin, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday Oct. 16 at the Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church with the Reverend Gene Leiter officiating. Interment will be at the Red Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and at the church for one hour before the service on Saturday. The family prefers memorials to the Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church.

Honorary casket bearers will be all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Bev Pitcher, Joyce Jacobson, Hazel Johnson and Mike Braaten. Casket bearers will be John Kruse, Dale Kruse, Larry Kruse, Travis, Kruse, Donald Prohaska, Mike Doolan and Vern Jacobson.

Lorrayne Madelyn (nee Seavey) Peck

1922-2010

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA - Lorrayne Madelyn Peck, 88, of Austin, died on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at the Swift County Benson Hospital.

Lorrayne was born April 20th, 1922 in Thief River Falls to Merton Oscar and Rachel (Josephson) Seavey and on January 11, 1947 was married to George Nicholas Peck in Mason City, Iowa. Lorrayne was a home maker who enjoyed crafts and making afghans. She loved the outdoors where she enjoyed fishing and traveling to their cabin in Ontario, Canada. As a volunteer she was a Girl Scout Leader for many years. She moved to Benson in June of 2010 to be near her daughter.

She is survived by two daughters: Cindy Evans of Calgary, Alberta and Sandra Cochran of Benson; two sons: Thomas R. Borden of Oakdale and Eugene M. Borden of Fernley, Nevada; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Merton Oscar and Rachel Seavey, husband, George Peck on June 3rd, 2009, and nine brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 8, 2010 at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David DeFor officiating and soloist, Barbara Sprandel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetary in Austin. 1984-2010

Hasan Amjad Dama, age 25 of Austin, died Tuesday afternoon in Austin, Minnesota.

He was born Dec. 19, 1984 to Amjad and Julie (Marienau) Dama in Austin. He graduated from Austin High School in 2003. He loved reading, working with computers and he wrote music.

Survivors include his mother, Julie Marroquin of Austin; father, Amjad Dama of Wilmington, North Carolina; brothers, Joseph Dama and Ignacio Marroquin, Jr., both of Austin; aunts and uncles, Stephanie (James) Cummings of Deerwood, Minnesota; Laurie (Douglas) Wanderer of Lidgerwood, North Dakota; Randy Marienau and Roger Marienau, both of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Royce and Rosella Marienau.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2010 at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, with Rev. Thomas Ogilvie officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Grandview Cemetery.

Matt Fleming, an old resident, died Monday, Dec. 9 at the age of 72. Funeral at the Catholic church Wednesday morning at 9:30.

Three priests, Fathers Schmit of Rollingstone, Minn., Myers of Fairmont and Koegel of Minneiska, arrived Tuesday to take part in the funeral services of Matt Fleming. Mr. Fleming was born in Germany April 1, 1835. He leaves a widow and four children, Matt, Mike, Gertie and Mrs. Joe Bergtoll.

FLEMMING, MIKE
DEATH TUESDAY AFTERNOON

Mike Flemming, 57, Adams, killed himself by hanging, Tuesday afternoon. While his wife was down town he went to the garage and killed himself with a wire stretcher. Mrs. Flemming found his body when she returned. The cause of the suicide has not been ascertained. Mr. Flemming apparently was in good health.

Aaron Peter Mandler

Aaron P. Mandler, 82, of Adams, died peacefully at home on October 12, 2010, surrounded by his family.

Aaron Peter Mandler was born Jan. 14, 1928 in Adams, to George and Susan (Schaeffer) Mandler. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Adams High School in 1946. Aaron served in the U.S. Army from 1950 until 1952. On May 7, 1955, Aaron married Lorraine Mullenbach at St. Johns Catholic Church in Johnsburg, MN. Aaron worked at Osmundson Bros., later at Hormel and again at Osmundson Bros. until his retirement. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish where he served as an usher and a Eucharistic minister. In his spare time, Aaron enjoyed walking, working on car engines, cleaning cars, and taking care of his lawn.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Mandler, Adams; daughter, Carol (Steven) Weber, Mankato; son, Brian (Karen) Mandler, Rochester; son, David (Joan) Mandler, Rochester; daughter, Ann (Curt) Oudekirk, Dexter; son, Bruce (Amy) Mandler, Wells; son, Rick (Tammy) Mandler, Wells; 11 grandchildren; sister, Bernette Brown, Minneapolis; brother, Harold (Lyda) Mandler, Austin; and brother, Harlan (Dorothy) Mandler, Brainerd.

Aaron is preceded in death by his brother, Donald George Mandler; son, Donald James Mandler and granddaughter, Ashley Mandler.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11a.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Thomas Loomis officiating. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Henry Logas, Sr., died at his residence in Rose Creek, Sunday night. He had been confined to his bed for seven weeks and the end was not unexpected, as he suffered from a cancerous condition of the stomach.

The funeral will be held at St. Peters church Wednesday morning, Rev. M. Jostock officiating.

Caroline (Stadnick) Tschida

Caroline Tschida, 86, of Austin, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

Caroline was born Sept. 27, 1924, in St. Louis, Missouri to Rudolph and Veronica (Votlucka) Stadnick. On June 24, 1944, she was united in marriage to Eugene Tschida, in Wayne County. Caroline was a homemaker. She was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church, St. Olaf Hospital Auxiliary, Women’s Council of Catholic Women and the Red Cross. Caroline was the newsletter editor for the Hospital Auxiliary and also a board member. She enjoyed knitting, reading, camping, cooking and doing volunteer work.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene on April 21, 2001; and her son, Michael Tschida.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 9, 2010, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Gregory Parrott officiating. The family will greet friends one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

June Louise (Larson) Colling

1930-2010

June Louise (Larson) Colling of Austin, Minnesota, died at the age of 80, on Thursday afternoon, October 7, 2010, at her home.

Born on July 12, 1930, in Oakland, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Irving and Frieda (Jorgensen) Larson. She grew up in Uehling, Nebraska, attended grade schools in Uehling and Omaha, attended Benson High School in Omaha for one year and graduated from Uehling High School in 1948.

After attending Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska and Van Sant Business School in Omaha, June married Leslie Colling on March 18, 1951, at the Methodist Church in Oakland, Nebraska. June worked as a nurses’ aid in Fremont Hospital, as a secretary at Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company in Omaha and in the Laboratory and Blood Donor Center at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. She also worked for about a year at Geo. A. Hormel and Co. at the Fremont plant. In 1975, the couple moved to Austin.

A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Mower County Humane Society, June loved animals and also liked to play cards, read and work word puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. June and Les traveled to all of the 50 United States, as well as Canada, Mexico and Europe.

Survivors include her husband: Leslie Colling, Austin; son: Ronald Colling, Rochester; daughter: Carolyn (Brian) Avery, Naperville, Illinois; grandson: Daniel (Ashley) Cast, Cincinnati, Ohio; special caregivers: Oksana Gillen and Phyllis Wiedemann, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin. with Rev. Michael Olmsted officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Mona K. (nee Kennedy)(Mogen) Miller

1911-2010

Mona K. Miller, age 99, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Thursday, October 7, 2010, at Sacred Heart Care Center where she was a resident.

Mona was born on January 8, 1911, in Guckeen, Minnesota, to John F. and Nina M. (Morris) Kennedy. She married Sanford O. Mogen, and he preceded her in death. She then married Edward J. Miller and he also preceded her in death.

Mona was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed knitting, and crafts.

Survivors include her children: William G. (Bonnie) Mogen, Austin, Sandra (Steve) Flaherty, Pillager, Minnesota; daughter-in-law: Pam (David) Grimm, Bloomington, Minnesota; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law: Muriel M. Avery, Minneapolis; two nephews, Peter Kennedy, Austin, Greg Kennedy, Michigan.

In addition to her husbands, she is preceded in death by her parents; sister, B. Marie Kennedy; brothers, Vincent, Francis, Maurice, Paul; sons, John S. Mogen, Jim Mogen.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at Sacred Heart Care Center with Father Donald Zenk officiating. Friends called one hour before the service at Sacred Heart Care Center. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.

The casket bearers were William G. Mogen Jr., Cindy Martin, Bob Flaherty, J.P. Flaherty, Brian Flaherty, Tom Titus.

Mayer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John I. Galt

1859-1936

John Galt Died
Tuesday Morning

John Galt, about 75 years of age, passed away early Tuesday morning, after a couple of weeks illness, following a stroke of paralysis. He had been feeble for a long time, however.

Mr. Galt was a resident of the Otranto vicinity for a good many years.

Surviving are his three children: Mrs. Charles Mackin, of Osage; Mrs. Irene Anderson, and Clifford Galt, of St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 at the Champion Funeral Home in charge of the Reverend T. P. Solen and burial made in a cemetery near Lyle, Minnesota.

John I. Galt

John I. Galt was born on December 12, 1859, in Cooksville, Rock County, Wisconsin, and at the age of seven came to Iowa with his parents, settling in Mitchell county, later moving to Myrtle, Minnesota.

In 1886 he was united in marriage to Jesse Sturdevant, of Cooksville, Wisconsin, and they made their home at Otranto.

To this union were born three children: Clifton B., of St. Ansgar; Irene Anderson, Meltonville; and Hazel Mackin, Osage. His wife preceded him in death four years ago.

He leaves to mourn his passing, besides his children, five grandchildren, two brothers and several nieces and nephews. At the time of his death he was 76 years, 4 months and 2 days old.

The funeral service was held at the Champion Funeral Home Thursday at 1:30 p.m., and interment was made in Woodbury cemetery, near Lyle, Minnesota.

Nicholas Steven (Hondo) Wagner

1951-2010

Nicholas Steven (Hondo) Wagner, 59, of Champlin, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, October 8, 2010, at his home.

Steve was born July 13, 1951 in Austin, the son of Thomas and Betty Wagner. There he was raised and graduated from Pacelli High School in 1969, where he was a standout basketball player for the Shamrocks, earning all-state honors his senior year. He later graduated from Austin Community College in 1971.

He spent many years in the construction business, much of this time as a union tender for bricklayers in the Twin Cities area.

He was united in marriage to Shari Walters on October 12, 1991 in Minneapolis. They moved to Champlin in 1997.

He was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Brooklyn Park.

He is survived by his wife, Shari Wagner of Champlin; sons: Adrian (Pam) of Eagan; Ryan of Maple Grove; Matt of Champlin; daughter, Kira of Minneapolis; grandchildren: Kylie, Benji, Emily, all of Eagan; brothers: Dan (Sue) Wagner of Longmont, Colorado; Greg (Wendy) Wagner of Longmont, Colorado; Pat Wagner of Phoeniz, Arizona; Chris (Anne) Wagner of Bloomington; sisters: Ann (Orin) Hanson of Brooklyn Park; Sara (Joe) Eastman of Grand Rapids.

He was preceeded in death by his father, Tom Wagner.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010 at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Brooklyn Park. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Bernard Francis Kroc

1923-2010

Bernard Francis Kroc, 87, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at the Austin Medical Center.

Barney was born on February 14, 1923 in Mason City, Iowa to Joseph and Loretta (Nugent) Kroc. They moved to Austin when he was a young boy. Barney served in the Marines from 1943 to 1946. On August 30, 1947 he was united in marriage to Marian Cecelia Dandelet at Queen of Angels Catholic Church. From this union came the birth of eight children. Barney was a retired employee of Hormel Foods, retiring in 1983 after 42 years.

Barney was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending time with friends, perfecting his game and posting two hole-in-ones. He also enjoyed the challenge of playing Scrabble with his wife and soul mate of 59 years, hunting, fishing, tinkering in the garage (earning him the nickname, Putz), and visits by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Barney could often be found relaxing in a lounge chair outside his garage with a favorite drink in hand supervising the chaos of his family and loving every minute of it.

Barney is continuing his support to others by donating his body for Medical Science, in collaboration with the University of Minnesota and Mayo Medical Systems.

He is survived by eight children: Mary Jo (David) Mosher, Westfield, Indiana; Thomas (Carole) Kroc, Farmington; Diane (Larry) Swanson, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin; Nancy (Robert) Brede, Austin; Susan (Murray) Srock, Austin; Ellen Kroc, Austin; Jerome (Sherry Smahel) Kroc, Delano, Minnesota; Joseph (Cecelia) Kroc, Austin; seventeen grandchildren: Tom, Jim, Chris, John, Deb, Mike, Randy, Becky, Michael, Katie, Matthew, Renee, Andy, Frank, Lindsey, Erin, Joey; 23 great-grandchildren; brother, Maurice Kroc, Austin; sister, Bernadine O’Shaughnessy, Burnsville; brother-in-law, Father James Dandelet, Easton, Minnesota.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marian on June 11, 2007; parents, Joseph and Loretta Kroc; brother, Clement Kroc.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m.. on Friday, October 15, 2010 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 5-7 p.m. The family will also greet friends at a luncheon following the service at the church on Friday.
