Guldbran Torsten Morstad

1817-1916

GULDBRAN TORSTEN MORSTAD

Guldbran Torsten Morstad, one of the oldest settlers of the county, passed away at the home of his son, Torsten, in Nevada Township last Friday, October 6, 1916. Besides being an old resident of the county, he was, at the time of his death, conceded to be the oldest person living in this section, having commenced the last year before reaching the century mark. Until a few days before his death he was able to be about the place in his usual health, and retained his faculties remarkably well.

The deceased was born on July 6, 1817, in Dable, Slire, Norway, where he spent his boyhood. In 1842 he was married to Miss Anna Knudsdatter Kjoli. This union was blessed with nine children, three of whom are living. Mr. Morstad left his native land in 1868 and came directly to Mower county. He settled at Adams where he remained for one year and then moved unto the homestead in Nevada Township, where he continued to reside until his death.

The deceased is survived by three children. They are Mrs. E. Bagstad of Roseau, Minnesota, Knut of Fordsville, N.C., and Torsten of the home place, also 40 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon in Six Miles Grove Church, and interment was made in the church cemetery. It is thought that he was the oldest person ever buried in that cemetery.

A large number of friends and relatives from this vicinity and also from Adams were in attendance. -- Lyle Tribune.

John Edward Scofield

1962-2011

John Edward Scofield, of Nowthen, Minnesota, died on Saturday, July 2, 2011.

He was a beloved husband, father to Taz, Brady and Cooper — the four-legged children — son, brother, godfather, uncle, and friend.

Most of John’s career was spent working with people with special needs. He supervised group homes in the Twin Cities area. John and Kelly enjoyed working together to help others.

John married Kelly Jackel on August 15, 1997, in Austin, Minnesota. Once John realized that Kelly had a garage at her home in Anoka, he proposed and the journey began. The journey included Brady, a spoiled cocker spaniel who was not excited about sharing his home but grew to love John the intruder. Taz joined the family soon after the wedding and became John’s ever faithful companion. Cooper the lovable snuggle bug, joined the family in 2010. Cooper was John’s constant companion and napping buddy when recovering from surgeries.

John was a member of Christ Church and served as the assistant treasurer and a Life Group Leader.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Scofield of Lake Stevens, Washington; and his grandparents.

He is survived by wife, Kelly; constant companion, Cooper; mother, Jeri Ekstedt of Washington; sisters, Louise VanWinkle, Lori Lund/George, Brandi Bailey, Rachel Hill, all of Washington; nieces and nephews, John Robert and Corey VanWinkle, Paul and Nichole Lund, Anthony, Larry and RaJan Hill of Washington; aunts and uncles in Minnesota and Washington; extended family, parents-in-law, Barb and Don Jackel of Austin; brother-in law, Craig Jackel of Austin; goddaughter, Sara Alms of Austin; Winjum, Peck, Rittschof, Iverson, Kirby, Nelson, and Alms families; special kids, Emily and Jared Balluff.
