Annette Fay (Braithwaite) Rysavy, 49

1961-2011

Annette Fay (Braithwaite) Rysavy, 49, of Austin, Minnesota, died at her home on Tuesday, May 17, 2011.

Annette was born on October 6, 1961, at Austin, the daughter of Robert Clarence and Lillian Margaret (Dahl) Braithwaite. Annette attended Austin Public Schools and worked as a caretaker. She enjoyed several hobbies, including reading, gardening, traveling, hunting and bowling. Annette was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Lillian Braithwaite.

She is survived by daughter, Jennifer Lynn Kraft of Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Eric William and Carolyn Ann Kraft of Austin; grandchildren, Treyvahn William Kraft, Jakob Matthew Christgau, Benjamin Jack Christgau, Blake Joseph Kraft and Alexa Lillian Marie Kraft; sisters and brothers-in-law, Susan Jane and Ronald Mielke of Lansing, Nancy Mae and Roger Oelkers of Brownsdale; brother and sister-in-law, Paul Robert and Kathy Braithwaite of New Hampton, Iowa, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday May 21, 2011, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Reverend Pam Aandahl Solberg officiating. Friends may call at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service. The family prefers memorials. Honorary bearer will be Treyvahn Kraft, Jakob Christgau, Blake Kraft, Benjamin Christgau and Alexa Kraft. Casket bearers will be Paul Braithwaite, Ron Mielke, Alexander Oelkers, Scott Oelkers, Jason Braithwaite and Robert Klukow.

Helen Anna (Mutinski) Rasmussen

1910-2011

Helen Anna (Mutinski) Rasmussen, 101, died at Our House Assisted Living on Thursday, May 12, 2011, surrounded by her family.

Helen was born on March 28, 1910, in Chicago to Joe and Barbara (Schultova) Mutinski. She grew up in Austin. She worked in her fathers shoe shop as a young girl and also was a waitress at the Austin Cafe. She met her husband Henry Rasmussen at the Austin Cafe. He would come in everyday to order lemon meringue pie. They then were married in 1937. They had two children Gloria and Jim Rasmussen. Henry worked at Hormel Foods. When he retired they moved to McAllen, Texas, to a retirement community.

Helen enjoyed golfing, shuffle board and playing cards with friends. She returned to Austin after her husband Henry passed away. She also enjoyed cooking, baking and entertaining with family and friends. Her other passion was to sew handmade clothing for her three grandcildren, Debbie, Cherri and Robyn. In addition she enjoyed playing and having fun with her great grandchildren Garret and Isaac.

Helen was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and the Bohemian Fraternal Lodge. Her parents came from Czechoslovakia. Helen was 100 percent Bohemian.

Survivors included her daughter Gloria (Luther) Hanson, Scottsdale, Arizona, and her son Jim (Phyllis) Rasmussen, Austin, Minn. Three grandchildren, Debbie, Cherri and Robyn Rasmussen all of Austin; two great grandchildren, Garrett and Isaac of Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry, her sister Mary (Bert) Alstadt and her brother Joe (Tess) Holan.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 4 pm rosary on Saturday afternoon at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Robert W. Dymacek, 88

1923-2011

Robert W. Dymacek, 88, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2011.

Bob was born on January 9, 1923, to William and Anna Dymacek. He graduated from Omaha South High School and served in the 8th Air Force Division in WWII. He married Sara Jane (Sally) Frohardt, and worked for Hormel Foods in Fremont, Neb., as an industrial engineer. In 1966, he transerred to the Austin, Minn., office of Hormel, from which he retired in 1986. In 1999, he moved to Phoenix.

Through the years, Bob was active in the Presbyterian Church, both local and regional levels, as well as the Red Cross, Masonci Lodge and Lionel Collectors Club. He also served as a Boy Scout troop leader. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jessie Light Hume; and wife, Sally.

Bob is survived by daughter, Linda Dymacek; son, Timothy A. Dymacek; granddaughters, Sara L. Dymacek and Bailey M. Dymacek; brother, Eugene Dymacek and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed. National Cremation Society is in charge of arrangements.

Elwin E. Williams, 96

1914-2011

Elwin E. Williams, 96, of Dexter, Minnesota died March 22, 2011, in Florida.

Graveside services for Elwin E. Williams will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Dexter Cemetery, Dexter, Minnesota.

Mr Williams was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Dexter. He served as an airplane inspector in the Army Air Force during World War II, he was stationed in San Diego, Calif. Elwin remained in California until 1984 when he returned to Dexter.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances E. (Hodgson) Williams of Dexter; daughter, Francie E. Rule of Lakeland, Fla., three grandchildren, Thomas Rule and Tiffany Rule both of Lakeland, Fla., and Tana Rule of San Diego, Calif.; two great grandchildren, Payton Carroll and Ryleigh Guskey both of Lakeland; three siblings, Donald Williams and Calvin Williams both of Rochester, Minn., and Shirley Breer of Iowa City, Iowa.

Alan Ray Kuns

1947-2011

ALAN RAY KUNS

LYLE, Minn. - Alan Ray Kuns, 54, of rural Lyle, Minn., died Saturday evening, (Oct. 6, 2001) at his home near Lyle.

He was born Aug. 30, 1947, in Forest City, to Ernest and Vesta (Carr) Kuns. He attended school in Fertile, and graduated from Forest City High School in 1965. On Aug. 1, 1970, he was united in marriage to Kandyce "Kandy" Callies in Forest City. Following his graduation from South Dakota State University in 1972, with a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy, the couple made their home in Minneapolis. While living in Minneapolis, Alan worked as a pharmacist and district manager for K-Mart Corp. In May of 1990, they moved to rural Lyle, where Alan continued to work for K-Mart and in 1998 joined Target as a pharmacist and district manager. He also worked part-time for Ruffalo Drug Store in Rochester as wellas a recruiting pharmacists for Target. He enjoyed rollerblading, baseball, golf, corvettes, airplanes and the internet. He was an active member of Crane Community Chapel, where he served on the church board and as a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Kandyce "Kandy" Kuns, of rural Lyle; two daughters, Callies (Devin) Voigt of Taopi, and Amanda Kuns, of rural Lyle and her special friend, Matthew Sturm of Austin; a brother, Rev. Neil (Elaine) Kuns of Los Angeles; a sister, Bonnie Kuns, of Forest City; his mother-in-law, Evelyn Callies of Rochester; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dale Kuns; and his father-in-law, Frank Callies.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Crane Community Chapel in Austin, with Rev. Randy Petersen officiating. Interment is at Woodbury Cemetery, rural Lyle. Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and at the church one hour before the service on Wednesday.

Jeanetta A. (Adams) Sumner

1917-1997

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA - Jeanetta A. Sumner, 79, of Austin, died Saturday (July 26, 1997) at the Burr Oak Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel, 209 Second Ave. N.W., with the Rev. Richard Ressler officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel, and one hour prior to services on Friday.

Jeanetta was born September 22, 1917, at Wheaton, Minnesota, the daughter of Earl and Lena (Kanapp) Adams. She graduated from Mason City High School, and the Austin Community College. Jeanetta was married to Norman Sumner on Sept. 28, 1940, at Albert Lea. They resided in Mason City until 1944 when they moved to Austin. The Sumners operated a roofing contracting business. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and the Royal Neighbors of America.

She is survived by nephews and wives, Jack and Rae Ann Adams, Humboldt, and Jerry and Barb Adams, La Verne, Calif.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Adams, Janesville, Wis.; four great nieces and nephews; and one great-great-nephew.

Jeanetta was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; three brothers; and one sister.

Doris "Janaan" Newell

1930-2001

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA - Janaan (Crawford) Newell, 71, of Austin, died Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born Doris Janaan Wilts on Sept. 2, 1930, in Mason City, to Fred C. and Marian L. (Heinz) Wilts. Janaan graduated from Mason City High School in 1947. She attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, graduating in 1951 with a teaching degree. She married Angus (Gus) Crawford on Sept. 9, 1951, in Mason City. He preceded her in death in 1970.

She later married Donald Newell on Sept. 2, 1977, in Wayzata, Minn. He preceded her in death in 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Janaan worked as a substitute teacher in Berkeley, Mo. She also worked for the Census Bureau in Oshkosh, Wis., and later worked for the Fazendin Realtors in Wayzata, Minn., until her retirement.

She had a great love of the outdoors, including bird watching and boating. She also had a fondness for cats.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Howie and Sherri Crawford, Austin; a daughter, Ellen Carle, St. Paul, Minn.; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Becky and Tom Fenton, Atlanta, Ga.; a stepson, Jerry Newell, Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Vigran, Exeter, Calif.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mayer Funeral Home, Austin, Minn., with the Rev. Kris Wee officiating. The family will greet friends one-half hour before the service at the funeral home. Violinist will be Sue Radloff.

The family prefers memorials to the Mower County Humane Society.

Thomas K. Felper

1914-2001

THOMAS K. FELPER 1914-2001

LIME SPRINGS, IOWA - Thomas Felper, 87, died Sunday (Dec. 16, 2001) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage, where he had been a short time.

His funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Riceville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Carey officiating. Burial will be in LeRoy Cemetery, LeRoy, Minnesota.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home, LeRoy, and one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday.

Thomas Felper was born February 9, 1914, to Thomas Felper and Nina Ritter in Mitchell County, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Lois Stanbro on May 8, 1933, in Preston, Minnesota. She passed away in 1985.

Tom was later united in marriage to Opal Jensson in Lime Springs, Iowa, and Opal passed away in January 1994.

Tom farmed most of his life and semi retired in the late '60s. He then purchased a grain truck and hauled grain for approximately 10 years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards and visiting with his friends.

He is survived by daughter, Alma and Eugene Hickey of Kewanee, Illinois; sons Arnold and Mardella Felper and Amil and Leota Felper, both of Riceville; daughter, Ardella Felper of Cresco; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Nora Hamilton of Elkton, Minn; and a special friend, Marilyn Irwin of Riceville.

Tom was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois, and his second wife, Opal; a son; six brothers; two sisters; one half brother; and two half sisters.

Marie V. (Bumgarner)(Adams) Hasty

1927-2001

MANLY, IOWA - Marie V. Hasty, 74, of Manly died Sunday (Dec. 23, 2001) at her home.

A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with a 5:30 p.m. rosary service and a 6 p.m. scriptural wake service, followed by a Moose Lodge service at 6:30 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to services on Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

Memorials may be made to the Marie Hasty Memorial Fund.

Marie V. (Adams) Hasty was born April 2, 1927, in Austin, Minnesota, the daughter of Marvin and Lillian (Maricle) Bumgarner. She attended schools in Austin.

She moved to Mason City in 1951 where she began working for Mercy Medical Center as a nurse aid.

She was united in marriage to Patrick Hasty on Aug. 5, 1972, in Canton, S.D. They later moved to Manly, where they made their home.

After 33 years of service to Mercy Medical Center, she retired in 1989. In her retirement she worked through Hospice of North Iowa helping patients in their homes.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moose Women and the Eagles in Cedar Rapids. She enjoyed spending time crocheting, fishing and working crossword puzzles.

She will be missed by those who knew and loved her, including her husband, Patrick Hasty, of Manly; children, Marvin Adams and special friend, Debra Meyer Hoffer, of Mason City, Susan Nitcher and special friend Robert Quast, of Burlington, Paula Weaver and husband, Cecil, of Mason City, Matthew Adams and wife, Deborah, of Orland, Calif., Mary Reich and special friend, Donald Hutzell, of Marble Rock, and Marsha Haberkorn and husband, Dennis; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; sisters, Harriet Hove and husband, Abel, of Faribault, Minn., and Jeannine Witte and husband, Charles, of St. Paul, Minn.; brother, Richard Bumgarner and wife, Katie, of Austin, Minn.

Bernice (Midje) Grothe, 81

1930-2011

Bernice Midje Grothe, 81, of Austin, died Monday evening May 9, 2011, at the Fieldcrest Care Center in Hayfield.

Bernice was born April 12, 1930, in Austin to Clarence and Julia (Stundahl) Midje. On May 1, 1949, she was united in marriage to Ronald Grothe at Oakland Lutheran Church.

As a lifelong Austin resident, Bernice worked for Woolworth’s for many years. She drove for seniors and disabled people, enjoyed flea markets and spending time taking care of neighbors and family.

Survivors include sons: Jim (CoCo) Grothe, River Falls, Wis., and Wayne Grothe, Austin; four grandchildren: Malinda, Dustin, Nathan, Jeff; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ronald, and son, John.

Memorial services will be held at Oakland Lutheran Church, rural Oakland, Minn., 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, with the Rev. James Grothe officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment is in Hillcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family.

Helen Margaret (Thompson)
CHRISTIANSON

1922-2011

Helen Margaret Christianson, 88, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, died on Thursday, May 12, 2011, at Fieldcrest Care Center in Hayfield, Minnesota.

She was born at home on June 26, 1922, in Moscow Township, Minnesota, to Barlow and Tonnetta (Peterson) Thompson. After graduating from Austin High School and Austin Teacher Training, she taught school for one year. On January 23, 1943, Helen married Orville Christianson in El Reno, Oklahoma where Orville was stationed in World War II. They lived in El Reno until Orville was sent overseas in late 1943.

After World War II, Helen and Orville farmed near Red Oak Grove until Orville retired in 1975 due to his health. Helen was active in the Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. She worked in a doctor’s office in Austin as a receptionist for several years. In 1977, the couple began spending their winters in Mesa, Ariz. While in Mesa, Helen became involved with golfing, oil painting, shuffleboard, ceramics, and gardening.

Helen and Orville were married for 52 years. Orville passed away in 1995, and Helen moved to Blooming Prairie two years after his passing, where she enjoyed the company of numerous relatives and friends. When her health began to fail, she sold her house and moved to Heather House in Blooming Prairie.

Helen was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Survivors include her three children, Teresa (Harold) Berg of Forest Lake, Brian (Janice) Christianson of St. Louis, Mo., Paul (Patricia) Christianson of Melbourne, Florida; four grandchildren, Karin (Mark) Berg-Ross of Stewartville, Barbara (Berg) Windels of Minneapolis, Cory (Amy) Berg of Excelsior, Austin Christianson of Melbourne; six great-grandchildren, Erin and Ian Ross, Hannah and Naomi Berg, Jason and Catherine Windels.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Barlow and Tonnetta Thompson; husband, Orville; sister, Beryl (Everett) Gerber; brothers, Warren Thompson, Leon Thompson, and Ray Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church with Rev. Gene Leiter officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at Worlein-Blooming Prairie F uneral Home and at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday. Fern M. Lickteig, 87

1923-2011

Fern M. Lickteig, 87, of Austin, died Saturday, May 14, 2011, at St. Marks Lutheran Home.

Fern was born on October 8, 1923, in Bowdon, North Dakota, to Ernest W. and Martha (Brown) Murphy. On November 9, 1946, she married James E. Lickteig in Austin, Minnesota. He preceded her in death on December 24, 1984.

Fern was a homemaker. She was a member of the Salvation Army and SFO Third Order of St. Francis. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, embroidery, collecting and restoring dolls, and she was an animal lover — dogs, cats and birds.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Waller, Winifred (Ronald) Ferguson, Karen (Maynard) Majerus; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Clara Murphy, June (Murphy) Bowman, Rita Lickteig, Rena Lickteig, Thomasine Farnsworth; many nieces and nephews including, Lois Goodnature.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Donald, Ernest and Warren; sister, Dorothy Estes.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 7 p.m. wake service Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

The honorary casket bearer will be Matt Koopman. The casket bearers will be Jason Ferguson, Bernard Waller, Brian Waller, Betsy Moriarty, Kevin Moriarty and Mark Goodnature.

Mavis Elaine (Thiede)(Lenz) Fritsch

1950-2011

#1:

Mavis Elaine Fritsch, 60, of Austin, died Sunday May 15, 2011, at Austin Medical Center after a courageous 2.5-year battle with cancer.

She was born May 24, 1950, to George and Maxine (McAdams) Thiede in Austin, where she grew up and attended school. She was a runner-up to Miss Austin in 1967. After graduating from Austin High School in 1968, Mavis attended Austin State Junior College. In 1970, Mavis transferred to the University of Minnesota, Duluth to continue her education. She graduated Cum Laude in 1972 with a degree in psychology. During the summer of 1972, Mavis traveled to Europe and worked as a housekeeper for the Spanish athletes at the Munich Olympic games.

On May 12, 1972, Mavis married Donald Lenz. They made their home in Austin and raised three children, Laura, Jana, and Matthew. In 1979, they purchased Lenz’s Rose Creek Market and sold it in 1988. Mavis began working for Mower County Human Services, first as a financial worker, and ending her career with her dream job of social worker. On Oct. 25, 2003, Mavis married David Fritsch. Her marriage to David included some of the happiest years of her life. Mavis was passionate about her work with the developmentally disabled and she loved her co-workers.

In December 2008, Mavis was diagnosed with cancer. She continued to work full time and never once let her personal struggle affect the integrity of her job or her work ethic. In March 2011, Mavis received the Minnesota Social Services Association Outstanding Staff Achievement Award. She retired on Feb. 28, 2011, to care for herself. From childhood on, Mavis was an avid music lover. She was a phenomenal percussionist and played with the Austin Symphony, Spamettes, Austin Community Band, and the Riverland Community College pit orchestra. Mavis touched so many people and so many lives. She loved being a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving in various offices and on many different committees.

Mavis performed missionary work and traveled to Hungary two separate occasions. She was always looking out for those in need. In her spare time, Mavis would watch movies, read, knit, sew, bake or “rebating.” Her rebate money paid for several vacations and gave her spending money over the years. Every year Mavis would take an annual shopping trip with her girls - Monica, Debbie, Linda, and Colleen. Mavis was a die-hard Elvis fan, even making the pilgrimage to Graceland. She loved her life and the people in it. She always made everyone feel like they mattered, and she will be missed beyond words.

Survivors include her beloved husband, David Fritsch; two daughters, Laura (Charles) Speltz and Jana Lenz, of Austin; son, Matthew Lenz of Red Wing; stepchildren, Jennifer Warner of St. Charles, Brad (Joan) Fritsch of Toledo, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jacob, Jayden, and Ariel; 12 step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; sister, Marlys (Darwin Peterson) Thiede of Ham Lake; and niece Taylor Peterson, also of Ham Lake. She was proceeded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 19, at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Reverend Michael Olmsted officiating. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin. Mavis Elaine Fritsch, age 60 of Austin, died Sunday May 15, 2011 at Austin Medical Center after a courageous 2 ½ year battle with cancer. She was born May 24, 1950 to George and Maxine (McAdams) Thiede in Austin, MN, where she grew up and attended school. She was a runner-up to Miss Austin in 1967. After graduating from Austin High School in 1968, Mavis then attended Austin State Junior College. In 1970, Mavis transferred to the University of Minnesota, Duluth to continue her education. She graduated Cum Laude in 1972 with a degree in psychology.

During the summer of 1972, Mavis traveled to Europe and worked as a housekeeper for the Spanish athletes at the Munich Olympic games. On May 12, 1972, Mavis married Donald Lenz. They made their home in Austin and raised their 3 children, Laura, Jana, and Matthew. In 1979, they purchased Lenz’s Rose Creek Market, selling it in 1988. Mavis began working for Mower County Human Services, first as a financial worker, and ending her career with her dream job of social worker. On October 25, 2003, Mavis married David Fritsch. Her marriage to David included some of the happiest years of her life. Mavis was passionate about her work with the developmentally disabled and she loved her co-workers.

In December 2008, Mavis was diagnosed with cancer. She continued to work full-time and never once let her personal struggle affect the integrity of her job or her work ethic. In March 2011, Mavis received the Minnesota Social Services Association Outstanding Staff Achievement Award. She retired on February 28, 2011 to care for herself. From childhood on, Mavis was an avid music lover. She was a phenomenal percussionist and played with the Austin Symphony, Spamettes, Austin Community Band, and the Riverland Community College pit orchestra.

Mavis touched so many people and so many lives. She loved being a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving in various offices and on many different committees. Mavis performed missionary work, traveling to Hungary two separate occasions. She was always looking out for those in need. In her spare time, Mavis would watch movies, read, knit, sew, bake or “rebating.” Her rebate money paid for several vacations and gave her spending money over the years. Every year Mavis would take an annual shopping trip with her “girls”- Monica, Debbie, Linda, and Colleen. Mavis was a die-hard Elvis fan, even making the pilgrimage to Graceland. She loved her life and the people in it. She always made everyone feel like they mattered, and she will be missed beyond words.

Survivors include her beloved husband, David Fritsch; two daughters, Laura (Charles) Speltz and Jana Lenz, of Austin; one son Matthew Lenz of Red Wing; stepchildren Jennifer Warner of St. Charles; Brad (Joan) Fritsch of Toledo, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jacob, Jayden, and Ariel; twelve step-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; sister, Marlys (Darwin Peterson) Thiede of Ham Lake; and niece Taylor Peterson, also of Ham Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Reverend Michael Olmsted officiating. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

The family prefers memorials to Westminster Presbyterian Church or Mower County Humane Society or Austin Symphony Orchestra.

Sgt. Marvin Bell

MARVIN BELL, FLIER,
NOW REPORTED DEAD

Mrs. Marvin Bell, of Lyle, Minnesota, Saturday received official notification that her husband, Sgt. Bell, had been killed on a flight over Holland on February 3. Bell had formerly been reported missing over Germany.

Sgt. Bell was a turret gunner and had been overseas only a short time. He was killed on his third mission.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bell of Lyle, and had one daughter, one and a half years old. He was a nephew of Mrs. Stannard Hill of Osage and was widely known in Mitchell county.

RICEVILLE BOY KILLED
IN ARMY TRAINING

RICEVILLE, IOWA - S. Sgt Heinz Timmerman, 26, son of Henry Timmerman of Rochester, Minnesota, was killed June 7, 1945, at Claiborne, Louisiana, where he had been in service for the past several months.

Heinz Timmerman was born in Germany on October 9, 1919. He came to the United States when he was three years old, residing near Saratoga. After the death of his mother when he was four, he made his home with an aunt and uncle at Saratoga.

Sergeant Timmerman attended the Riceville school from which he was graduated in 1929. He was interested in athletics, in which he made a good record. After graduation he worked at the Kahler hotel in Rochester, Minnesota.

He was a member of the Minnesota National Guard and was inducted into the armed services in January, 1942. He had service on ships bringing prisoners of war back to the United States. He also guarded prisoners in Missouri before being stationed at Louisiana.

In February 1942 he married Margaret Enfield of Riceville. She had been with him at Louisiana until a month before his death.

Heinz Timmerman is survived by his wife, father, and stepmother, one sister, two grandmothers and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Martz Funeral Home at LeRoy, Minnesota. The American Legion of LeRoy, had charge of the services at LeRoy, and the committal services at the Osage Cemetery.

Jean “Jeannie” Nelson, age 71 of Lyle, went home to meet her Lord and Savior on Wednesday evening, May 18, 2011.

Jeannie was born on July 11, 1939 in Austin to Francis and Esther (Fahje) Nelson. She attended Lyle Center Country School, then Lyle Elementary and graduated from Lyle High School in 1957. Following graduation, she worked at Lyle State Bank for a few years before becoming secretary to Josephine Kremer, Director of Elementary Education, at Austin Public Schools.

In 1966 Jeannie moved to Eugene, Oregon, where she was employed by Eugene Public Schools while making her home with Aunt Alice Nelson until 1980. Jeannie was afflicted with Rheumatoid Arthritis in her mid twenties and in 1980, moved back to Lyle. She was a fixture at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lyle, especially during the beef supper every fall. Besides chairing and handling ticket sales for the beef supper, she was active in other projects for ALCW, WELCA and circle. She moved to Heritage House in 2007, but failing health caused her to move to Good Samaritan Society in St. Ansgar on April 25.

She suffered a paralyzing stroke on May 9 and spent time at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City and Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage.

Cleo Coons, 89, of Rockwall, Texas, died May 21, 2011.

Cleo was born on August 30, 1921, to Joseph and Elizabeth Littenberger Heimer.

She was a homemaker on the family farm and had worked as a dental assistant as well as a secretary for the county clerk auditor in Austin, Minn. She was a member of Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams.

Cleo is survived by her son, Robert W. Thompson ot Tucson, Ariz.; daughters, Beverly (Harold) Clampitt of Rockwall; Dr. Barbara Hershey of Chapel Hill, N.C.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Eris Raymond; and husbands, Howard M. Thompson and Lavern Coons.

Penny JoAnne Engelman, 31, of Austin, died Sunday, May 22, 2011, as a result of an automobile accident.

Penny was born December 21, 1979, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes, Minn. to Timothy and Linda Engelman. She attended Sumner Elementary School, Ellis Middle School and Austin High School. Penny enjoyed disc golf, hack, fishing, swimming, nature center walks, road trips, cruising in her car, reading and most of all she loved her son, Ashton.

Survivors include her son, Ashton Blaze Arends of Owatonna; mother, Linda Engelman of Austin; sister, Brenda Lynn Engelman of Austin; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her father, Timothy Engelman.

Jacqueline Jean (Fryer) Sheedy, 52

1958-2011

Jacqueline Jean Sheedy, 52, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, May 22, 2011 at the Austin Medical Center after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

Jackie was born June 30, 1958, in Rochester, to Robert and Jean Fryer. She moved to Austin with her family shortly after her birth where she grew up. She graduated from Pacelli High School in 1976 and went on to Rochester Community College and graduated with her RN degree. She began work at the Austin Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit. In October of 1979, she married her high school sweetheart, Joe Sheedy. They then moved to the Sheedy Farm. While raising their three children she enjoyed baking, gardening, needlepoint, bird watching and socializing with her many friends.

Survivors include her husband, Joe of Austin; daughters, Laura of Austin, Joan (Dan) Peterson of Blaine; son, Tim of Austin; parents, Robert and Jean Fryer of Lanesboro; sister-in-law, Liz (Ron) Rysavy of Austin; brothers, Dan (Karen) Fryer, Mike (Turi) Fryer, Pat (Deb) Fryer, Pete (Julie) Fryer, Jim (Jodi) Fryer, Ben Fryer; sisters, Collette (Mike) Koll, Mary (Ken) Semat, Jenny (Jeff) Reinartz; numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal and Father Paul Nelson officiating. Mae Annette (Newell) Broadwell, 60

Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel. Let us remember with thanksgiving what God has done through his servant Mae Broadwell.

Mae Annette Broadwell, 58, formerly of Austin, died at her home in Grangeville, Idaho, May 18, 2011.

Mae was born in Austin, Minnesota, on May 24, 1950, to Charles and Marian Newell. She was reborn as a child of God in the waters of Holy Baptism on October 12, 1952. She was confirmed in the Christian Faith and was fed the life-giving body and blood of Jesus. She was united in holy marriage to Alan Broadwell in Sept. 4, 1971, and blessed with 39 years of married life together. God also blessed them with the gift of a son; Jody Broadwell. On May 18, 2011, God called Mae home to heaven.

She is survived by her husband, Rev. Alan Broadwell of Grangeville, Idaho, her son Jody Broadwell of Austin; brother, Lloyd Newell of Mountain View, Ariz.; sister, Patricia Pfiefer of Rochester. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord. We give thanks to God our Father through Jesus Christ, our Lord, for our sister Mae Broadwell. Thomas Edward Gregerson

Thomas Edward Gregerson, 61, a resident of Peoria, Arizona, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 17, 2011.

Tom, the second-oldest of eight children, was born in Austin, Minnesota, to George and Ruth Gregerson. Tom’s family moved to Albuquerque, N.M. when he was 12. He attended Sandia High School, was a member of the golf team and loved any game that had a ball in it. He joined the Air Force in 1968 and trained as a medic. He had a passion for the game of golf, became an excellent cook and was an avid reader. Tom will be remembered for his outgoing personality, his gentle spirit and delicious carrot cake. He married the love of his life, Linda, in 1981.

Tom is survived by his wife Linda; stepsons, Michael and Gary Christensen, four grandchildren Michael, Paschen, Colton and Matthew; four great-grandchildren Trevor, Anthony, Michael, and Kianti; five brothers and two sisters: Harold, Don, Paul, David, John, Mary Martin and Martha Lee.

Rose Helen Helgeson, 85, of Lyle, died Tuesday morning, May 24, 2011, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

She was born on September 5, 1925, to John and Bessie (Herr) Madson in Freeborn County, Minnesota. She graduated from Austin High School in 1944, and became the head bookkeeper at Woolworth’s. On August 21, 1949, she married Wayne Helgeson at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. After raising three children, Rose returned to work, this time as head cook at Lyle Public Schools for 12 years. A member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lyle, she was active in WELCA and enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening. Her main priority, however, was taking care of her family. Her husband, children and grandchildren were her greatest joy.

She was born on June 6, 1921, to Pedar and Anna Forthun. She married Eldon Huffman. After his death, Eileen married Lloyd Camerer on February 14, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She was employed by Sears, Roebuck & Company for 15 years in Austin where she made her home in Austin for 69 years. She enjoyed fishing, bowling, spending time with grandchildren and other family members. Eileen also volunteered at St. Olaf Lutheran Church and cooked for the Senior Citizen Center and Semcac.

Survivors include her children, Ellard (Marcene) Forthun of Milaca; Vikki Williams of Austin; Kevin (Ginny) Camerer of Owatonna; Kim (Rodney) Day of Montana; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Pedar Forthun; husbands, Eldon Huffman and Lloyd Camerer; four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m., Saturday, May 28, 2011, at Oakland Lutheran Church, rural Austin. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Worlein Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Oakland Lutheran Cemetery, rural Austin. Alice (nee Gronseth) Meiners, 82

1928-2011

Alice Gronseth Meiners, 82, died on Tuesday morning, May 24, 2011, at her home in Sunrise Retirement Communities of Edina. Alice was born on June 15, 1928, to Albert and Emma Gronseth.

She grew up on her parents’ farm outside of Sargeant, Minn. Following graduation from Austin High School in 1946, she moved to Chicago to work for the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board and, subsequently, the U.S. Bureau of Customs, where she met her future husband, Bernard A. Meiners. She married Bernard on Feb. 20, 1954, in Chicago, where they resided until his retirement in 1964. They then moved to Austin, where she lived for most of the remainder of her life.

Alice loved her family. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. When her husband became ill, she counted it a joy to be able to care for him at home for several years prior to his death in 1975. She loved her children and delighted in watching them grow. She enjoyed preparing special surprises for her grandchildren whenever they visited. Her friends and family knew her to be a faithful correspondent, who valued keeping in touch by letter. Among her favorite activities were time spent with her brothers, sisters and their families. She particularly enjoyed the annual Gronseth Family Picnic.

Alice also loved her church family. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Austin for over 40 years. She worked in the church library and visited shut-ins. She and her husband frequently entertained guest speakers and the church youth group. All of us who loved Alice are comforted by knowledge that she is now with her Savior.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn (Mark) Johnson, Williamston, Mich.; son, Cary Meiners, Burnsville, Minn.; two grandchildren, Daniel and Emma Johnson; three brothers, Stanley (Ellen) Gronseth, Wallace Gronseth, and James (Janice) Gronseth; two sisters, Fran Martin and Adeline Moen; one sister-in-law, Jean Gronseth; one brother-in-law, James Winholt; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bernard; two brothers, Charles Gronseth and Archie Gronseth; sister Shirley Winholt; brothers-in-law, Herb Martin, Willard Moen and sister-in-law, LaVonne Gronseth.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28, at Worlein Funeral Homes in Austin with The Reverend R. Allan Flint officiating. Visitation is at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Grandview Cemetery, Austin. The family prefers memorials to the Salvation Army of Austin or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.

Anne (Vaughan) Steiner, 82

1928-2011

Anne Vaughan Steiner was born June 20, 1928 in Dallas, the youngest of eight children born to John G. Vaughan, Sr. and Vera Madge (McMahon) Vaughan. On May 18, 2011, she left the frailties that Alzheimer’s placed on her and went to live with her heavenly Father.

Anne married James Steiner on July 29, 1946, and together they raised four children in Austin, Minn. and Fremont, Neb., later moving back to Minnesota and then retiring to Bella Vista, Ariz., and finally in San Antonio, Texas, area. No matter where they lived, Anne enjoyed a wide variety of interests, including golf, gardening, cooking, sewing and bridge, and she was always the consummate hostess, entertaining their many friends with great confidence and style.

Anne is survived by her husband, James Steiner of San Antonio; daughters, Cheryl Lyren (Doug) of San Antonio, Debbie wells (Gary) of Greer, S.C., Melinda Rounds (Glen) of Garfield, Ariz.; son, Kent steiner (Kris) of Brownsdale, Minn.; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Nell Westmoreland; brothers, Malcolm Vaughan and Eldon Vaughan, all in the Dallas area; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Anne’s life will be held 11 a.m., June 3, at University United Methodist Church, 5084 DeZavala Road, San Antonio, TX.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Asociation.

ADAMS -- A memorial service for Daniel Wayne Henaman will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Fogal officiating. Mr. Henaman, 57, of Adams, died Monday at his home.

Daniel Wayne Henaman was born March 3, 1951, in Spencer, Iowa. He graduated from high school in 1970. He was employed by Quality Pork Processors and more recently as a security guard with the Hormel Foods Corporation in Austin.

Survivors include his fiancee, Cheryl Barrett of Adams; his children, Shannon (Donnie) Henaman-Thompson, Daniel (Nicole) Jr. of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Niki Henaman of Lyle, and Philip Henaman of Ramstein AFB, Germany; two stepdaughters, Allison and Amanda Barrett, both of Austin; five grandchildren; a sister, Sandy Huebsch of Osage Iowa; five brothers, Philip Henaman of Rosemount, Larry Henaman of Osage, Iowa, Kevin Hemann of Welcome, Minn, Rick Hemann of Marion, Iowa, and Mike Hemann of Stacyville, Iowa; and his stepfather, Marvin Hemann of Stacyville.

Friends may call an hour before the service Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are preferred to the family.

Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in Austin is in charge of arrangements.

DIES IN HOSPITAL

Mrs. Albin Winkels, 30, McIntire, Iowa, died on Wednesday morning at 8:30 at the Mercy hospital in Mason City, of complications following a Caesarian operation three weeks ago. She had returned to her home ten days ago, but was taken back to the hospital Sunday.

She is survived by her husband; two children, a two-year-old and the three-week-old baby; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver G. Erhart of Johnsburg, Minnesota; and by two sisters.

Willard G. Block, 95

1916-2011

Willard G. “Bob” Block, 95, of Austin, died Saturday, May 28, 2011, at Comforcare.

Bob was born May 5, 1916 in Austin to William and Lucy Block. In 1934, he was united in marriage to Ruth I. Cox.

He attended ICS for Electrical Engineering and was on the Austin Utility Board of Directors. Bob was a retired employee of Hormel Foods. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and fishing. Bob was a member of the Austin Country Club, the Elk’s Lodge and St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Block, Austin; four children, Roger (Jeannine) Block of Stewartville, Janice (Ken) Regner of Ft. Myers, Florida, Doug (Kathy) Block of St. Paul, Ronald Block of Austin; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 30, 2011, at Mayer Funeral Home with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Interment in Calvary Cemetery.

Dr. Gary Paul Brandeland, 56

1954-2011

Dr. Gary Paul Brandeland, 56, M.D., of Burnsville, Minnesota, died on May 29, 2011 at his home.

Gary was born on October 16, 1954, to Harold and Marilyn Brandeland, who were longtime residents of Austin. Gary attended the University of Minnesota Medical School in Duluth and was employed by North Memorial Clinic in Elk River. He especially enjoyed music and reading.

Survivors include: daughters, Lindsey Martin of Russellville, Ky., Megan Brandeland of Minneapolis; sister, Pam Jacobson of Austin; brother, Bruce Brandeland of Plano, Texas; life partner, Darlene Dulaney of Burnsville; and grandson, Carson Mac Martin.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at White Funeral Home in Burnsville. White Funeral Home 12804 Nicollet Ave. Burnsville, MN, is in charge of arrangements.

ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - Gladys Allen, 91, of St. Ansgar, died Friday, May 27, 2011, at Good Samaritan Society Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31, at St. Ansgar United Methodist Church, St. Ansgar with Rev. Peter Chang officiating.

Burial will be in Woodbury Cemetery, Lyle, Minn.

Gladys E. Allen, 91

Gladys Edria Allen died Friday, May 27, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar, Iowa. She was 91.

Gladys was born June 19, 1919, in rural Carpenter, Iowa, to Elmer and Eva (Thomas) Heard.

Gladys graduated from Carpenter High School in 1937. On December 18, 1940, Gladys was united in marriage to Lewis Allen of London, Minn. Gladys and Lewis spent most of their married life at first farming and then residing in and around the Carpenter and St. Ansgar, Iowa areas. They also lived in Mesa, Arizona, for 3 ½ years.

Gladys was employed by the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital and later the United States Postal Service. Gladys had many interests and hobbies and volunteered many hours in service to the Goodwill Industries, the Carpenter Cemetery Association, and her church. She was a member of the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church, where she served as long time chairman of the missions committee. She and Lewis were caretakers of the Carpenter Cemetery and were custodians at the church for many years.

She is survived by two nieces: Bonita Heard Bakker (Meint) and Jean Heard Byl (Vern); cousins, Martha Chancellor (Denis Boerjan) and Phyllis Levendusky (Don), and by many additional cousins, great-nieces and nephews and extended family members.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her two brothers, Orie Heard and Kenneth Heard, and two nephews, Gary Heard and Floyd Heard.

Services for Gladys Allen will be conducted by Rev. Peter Chang at the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church, Tuesday, May 31, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be an hour before the service. Burial will be in the Woodbury Cemetery, rural Lyle. Memorials may be directed to the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church, 510 W. 4th St., St. Ansgar, IA 50472.

Wilfred L. King, 85

1926-2011

Wilfred L. King, 85, of Adams, Minnesota, died Friday, May 27, 2011, at the Adams Health Care Center.

He was born April 1, 1926, in Adams, Minnesota, to Leo and Lena (Meurer) King. He graduated from Adams High School in 1944. Wilfred married Helen Mahl on July 12, 1949, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. He worked for the U.S. Postal service for 38 years and retired as Postmaster in 1984.

Willie was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and a volunteer fireman for the Adams Fire Department and he also enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

He is survived by his loving wife: Helen King, Adams; children: Martin (Peggy) King, Blaine, Mary (David) Schmeling, Blaine; Leo (Laurie) King, Citrus Heights, Calif.; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, brother: Art (Marlene) King, Fort Dodge, Iowa; sister: Barbara Runde, McIntire, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Jean King, Mitchell, S.D.;, Clarice King, Rochester, Eileen King, Kasson, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Ann Marie, son Donald Robert, brothers Raphael, Herman, and Jerome, and sister Rosemary Eisterhold.

A memorial mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Thomas Loomis officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Honorary bearers will be his grandchildren: Jeffrey King, Michael King, Michelle Groff, Aaron Schmeling, Alexander Schmeling, Eric King, and Matthew King.

Memorials are preferred to the Sacred Heart Catholic School.

Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
