Ernest Sorenson

TRAGIC DEATH

Old Mower County Boy Commits Suicide.

Ernest Sorenson, an old Mower County boy, who formerly lived near Rose Creek and later near LeRoy commits suicide by hanging himself to the bed post in his room in a private sanitarium for the insane at Minneapolis.

Mr. Sorenson was a graduate of the Winona Normal and one of the brightest boys and best scholars who ever attended that school. He married Miss Josephine Beauregard, an Austin girl and for a number of years they were prosperous and happy. The story is a very sad one, familiar to many of our readers who were acquainted with Mrs. Sorenson. Mr. Sorenson was an excellent businessman and all that he touched seemed to prosper. He was respected and honored by all who knew him. Overwork brought on mental exhaustion and he was taken to the insane hospital at St. Peter.

He recovered in time so as to be able to resume his work, which he took up with old time energy, the same result following and he returned to the hospital. Later the family removed to Minneapolis and about the middle of February Mr. Sorenson was taken to a private sanitarium for the insane. He was there but three days when he took his own life by hanging himself to the bed. He had received a visit from an attendant and as soon as he was left by himself he ended his life. His death occurred last Thursday and the funeral was held Saturday.

OBITUARY

Baby Dies

Little Harry Edward, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Twedell, died Friday evening, May 15, about midnight. The little one had he lived until the sixth of next month would have been a year old.

The child was well and strong until about four weeks ago when he became ill with the measles. Following the measles abscess and probably blood poisoning set in, causing his death.

He was a bright, happy child, the life and joy of the home he brightened. Much sympathy goes out to those who have lost their little household treasure. Tender and most devoted care did not avail to save him.

Cheryl Renee Burton

Austin Tot Dies
In Fire Set By
Christmas Tree

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA -- A fire which started in a Christmas tree took the life of a two-year-old girl here today.

The fire badly damaged the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Burton. Mrs. Burton managed to save two other children, 4 and 18 months, but intense heat prevented rescue of Cheryl, 2.

Cheryl's body was found by firemen, huddled under the covers on a bed. Dr. George Stahl, the coroner, said she died from suffocation and burns.

Fire Chief John Tobar said the fire started in a Christmas tree atop a television set in the living room and spread to other rooms along the wallpaper. Heat from the blaze melted the picture tube in the television set and glass in the living room windows.

The fire broke out about 9:45 a. m. Burton, 26, who works in a filling station across the street tried to crawl in to hunt for the missing child but was driven back by smoke and heat. Both he and his wife were in a state of shock.

Mrs. Burton, who carried her other two children out and screamed for help, said, "It was all I could do to get the others out. I don't know where Cheryl was."

Viola Mildred (Souhrada) Leslie

1911-2011

Viola Mildred Leslie, 99, of LeRoy, died, April 30, 2011, at the Adams Health Care Center.

Viola was born on December 19, 1911, in Howard County, Iowa, to John and Olga (Prochaska) Souhrada. She attended Beaver Township, Minnesota, District 106 elementary school and Chester, Iowa High School. Following graduation in 1928, she matriculated at the Chatfield, Minnesota, Normal Teachers School, after which she taught at the rural elementary school she had previously attended.

On June 14, 1933, Viola married Carl Leslie at the Methodist Church in Chester. She left teaching to become a full-time farm wife, homemaker, and mother when son Loren was born. However her interest in learning and education continued through her volunteer activities as a Sunday School teacher, 4-H club leader, and home extension service coordinator.

After her second son, Richard, left for college, Viola returned to her teaching profession becoming recertified as an elementary school teacher. Once again she taught at the nearby country school until it became a part of the consolidated LeRoy-Ostrander school system. As a result, Viola frequently served as a substitute teacher in the LeRoy-Ostrander elementary school and provided tutorial lessons in mathematics and reading for students needing more individual attention. Following the death of Carl on June 8, 1979, Viola continued to operate the farm but in 1984 moved to Lime Springs, Iowa, for 19 years until physical limitations necessitated her residence at an assisted living facility at Wildwood Grove in LeRoy.

Viola’s life was one of love — love of God, love of family and love of teaching. Her devout Christian faith and pursuit of knowledge influenced everyone who knew her whether in classroom, Bible Study groups or discussion forums. People enjoyed her stories, and she was the star of the Good Old Days programs at the nursing home.

Viola is survived by her sons, Dr. Loren (Arlene) Leslie of Lutsen, Minnesota, and Richard (Arleen) Leslie of Marysville, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jennifer Leslie-Bukowski (Frank) of Chicago, Magnus (Amy) Leslie of Minneapolis, and Barton Leslie of Seattle, Wash.; sister-in-law Ardis Souhrada of Lanesboro, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, John, Emil and Richard; sister, Helen. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at the Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy with a celebration of life at 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, at Chester United Methodist Church. Rev. Candraeah Carey officiating. Burial will be at the Chester Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Chester United Methodist Church or a charitable organization of the donor’s choice.

Donald Albert Majerus, 82

1928-2011

Donald Albert Majerus, devoted husband, loving father, and loyal friend left his earthly existence for his new home in heaven surrounded by the love of his family.

Don, 82, of Austin, died Monday, May 2, 2011, at St. Marks Nursing Home.

Don was born June 27, 1928, in Stewartville to John and Mary (Strejn) Majerus. He grew up in Stewartville, but moved to Austin his senior year in high school. He was a proud member of the Austin High School class of 1946. On September 5, 1953, Don married Eileen Frandle and was drafted into the Army a year later. He served his country for two years, then settled down with his wife in Austin.

In the early 1960s Don started his own business, Don’s Shell Service. Today we’d call it a gas station, but back then it was truly a “service” station. Don pumped gas, changed oil and repaired cars. In 1965, Joe Wagner hired Don to join him at Joseph Construction, where, over the years, Don was draftsman/building designer, construction project manager and vice president. He retired in 1993.

Don loved Austin and gave back to the community in various ways, including serving on the Austin City Planning commission for several years. He was an active member of Queen of Angels parish, where he was lector, parish council member and trustee. As a longstanding member of the Sertoma Club, Don was known for everything from his leadership of the annual flight breakfast to his starring role as Santa at the annual Christmas party for special needs children. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Moose.

For the past five years, Don resided at St. Marks nursing home, where he was known for his sense of humor and his philosophical quotations. He enjoyed witty banter, crossword puzzles, singing, music and reading. Prior to moving to St. Marks, Don especially enjoyed traveling with his wife, Eileen, whether it was a short drive in the country or a trip to another state or overseas to visit their children.

Survivors include his children, John Majerus of Rochester, Margaret (Todd) Nelson of Kasson, Bill Majerus of Lyle, Teresa (Gene) Lim of Chicago, Joe (Janis) of Shakopee, Elizabeth (Richard) Miller of Dallas, Texas and Mike (Michelle) Rogers, Minn.; fourteen grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Don believed you should do your best, work hard, keep your promises, and most of all, keep a sense of humor through all of life’s challenges.

In recent weeks, Don’s physical condition prevented him from leaving his bed at St. Marks, but it didn’t prevent him from continuing to dispense his humor and wisdom, and share his faith. His window overlooking the courtyard garden was his inspiration, and as this year’s snow melted away, Don spoke of the awe he felt at the promise of spring.

Now Don walks where spring is eternal, and you can be certain he’s got his dancing shoes on.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday, May 6, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper and Father Paul Nelson officiating. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. and one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Military rites will be by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216. Memorials are preferred to Pacelli High School, Queen of Angels Catholic Church, or St. Marks Lutheran Home.

Georgia Ann (Hatten) Schramm, 67

1943-2011

Friday, May 6, 2011, Georgia Ann Schramm, 67, died peacefully at her home overlooking Two Mile Lake in Wascott, Wisconsin, surrounded by her loving family and the glory of nature.

Georgia was the middle of 11 children born to Arnold and Walburga (Rahe) Hatten of Austin on July 23, 1943. It was from her upbringing on the farm that Georgia learned to appreciate hard work, taking care of what’s yours, the cycle of life, and to take care of nature and it will take care of you. Even though she may have lost her own father and special family members years ago, Georgia’s mother is still active and healthy at 100 years old.

Georgia married Roger Schramm on January 12, 1963, and began a strong and beautiful union of 48 years. Together they shared many adventures: traveling, fishing, camping, remodeling and gaming. Their two biggest adventures and accomplishments together, though, were farming and raising their son and daughter. Georgia worked side by side with Roger on the farm near Waltham, to make it the success it was, which allowed them an early retirement to their home on the lake in northern Wisconsin. It was during this time that Georgia found time to enjoy flower gardening and birding.

Georgia loved her role as mother and grandmother. She was blessed to have been a big part of the four grandchildren’s lives. Her son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Natalie Schramm, of Dubuque, Iowa, are parents to her grandson, Bobby Schramm of Des Moines, Iowa, and Katie Schramm of Dubuque, Iowa. Her daughter, Cindy Hanson, is parent to her grandsons Barrett and Carter Hanson of Holmen, Wis. Her children and grandchildren will proudly continue to continue many of Georgia’s traditions and values.

Per Georgia’s wishes, her body has been cremated, and a private celebration of her life will be held this summer at her home on the lake. The family requests that in honor of the unpretentious way Georgia lead her life that no memorials are sent to the family. Instead, please honor nature with a new planting or bird feeding station, an act of kindness to someone in need or a donation to a cause of your choice.
