JoAnn Lorraine Rudlong 1946-2009
JoAnn Lorraine Rudlong, 63, of Austin, died Monday afternoon, December
28, 2009, at St. Marks Lutheran Home.
She was born March 21, 1946 to John and Lorraine (Cline) Nuss in
West Union, Iowa, where she grew up and graduated from high school.
She moved to Minnesota and became licensed as an X-ray technician,
employed by Olmsted Medical Center. JoAnn was a strong advocate of
women’s health issues. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren,
enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and sports.
Survivors include two sons, Shad (Anne) Rudlong of Blooming Prairie
and Steffen (Michele) Rudlong of Colton, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Jake,
Hunter, Alexa and Gracie; two brothers, James (Joyce) Nuss of Tripoli,
Iowa and Gene (Jane) Nuss of Hawkeye, Iowa; two sisters, Jane (Wayne)
Voelker of Ferryville, Wisconsin and Betty Koenig of Elwood, Neb.;
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her stepfather, Clarence.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the
family. Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, is in charge of arrangements.

George A. Rush, 63, died Thursday evening at St. Olaf Hospital after a
long illness.
An employee of the Mower County Highway Department, he resided at 1103
Mitchell.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; two sons, Everett and Donald of Austin;
a daughter, Mrs. Lowell Amundson. Frost, Minn.; three brothers, Walter of
Cresco. Iowa, Chester of Clinton, Iowa, and the Rev. William Rush, Simpson,
Minn.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon.

Vernon Hooper Holst, 90 1912-2002
Vernon Hooper Holst, 90, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, Dec. 10,
2002, at Stacyville Community Nursing Home.
He was born July 5, 1912, to Henry and Sophia (Hooper) Holst in Red Wing.
The oldest of five children, he attended school in Rock Creek in north
central Minnesota and moved as a young adult near Austin with the family.
He served his country during World War II as a Merchant Marine. Upon
returning home from service, he farmed, became an auctioneer and prominent
real estate agent in the Austin area, specializing in farms as a member of
the National Real Estate Association. Licensed in Minnesota, Iowa and
Illinois. He enjoyed discussing history, religion, politics and farming.
Vernon was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He entered the Stacyville
Community Nursing Home in April of 1998.
Survivors include sisters, Lois Nelson, Hastings; Jean (Pete) Kuhlman,
Sargeant.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Raymond; and sisters,
Irene Barnum and Ione Staples.
Visitation: One hour before the service only.
Service: 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at the funeral home with the
Rev. Ron Barnett officiating.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion
Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.

Rose Marie Vanek 1918-2009
Rose Marie Vanek, 91, formerly of Glenville, died Tuesday, December
29, 2009 at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center in Austin.
Rose Marie Vanek was born on March 14, 1918 to Frank and Rose
(Potucek) Prantner on the family farm. Rose, the youngest, attended
school in District 116 near Myrtle. After moving to Glenville, she
did housework, baby-sitting and worked at the Glenville Motel. Rose
met Wilton “Doc” Vanek and they were united in marriage on May 28,
1937, in Northwood, Iowa by Justice of the Peace E.J. Dwelle. The
couple lived in Glenville for 10 years then moved to a small acreage
north of Glenville. They raised some livestock and had many pets for
their boys. In 1966, they returned to Glenville where Doc worked for
the city, did police work and served on the volunteer Fire Department
for 44 years.
Rose was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Glenville. She was
a nature lover and enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables. Her hobbies
were sewing, crocheting, knitting afghans, making quilts and baking.
Rose enjoyed entering these items at the Freeborn County Fair in the
Home Activities Building and was very proud of the many blue ribbons
and grand champion ribbons won. Rose loved her family and cherished
the time spent with them.
Survivors include her sons, Lauren (Arlene) Vanek of Glenville, Larry
(Linda) Vanek of Glenville and Lonnie (Sandra) Vanek of Austin;
grandchildren, Kathleen (David) Snyder, Gregory Vanek and Jenny,
Jeffrey (Kristin) Vanek, Lynette (Kurt) VanRyswyk, Lynae (Dean)
Dahlum, Lane (Sandy) Vanek, Benjamin Vanek and Aaron Vanek;
great-grandchildren, Dayton, Lacey, Lindsey, Sara, Jennifer,
Nathan, Jordyn, Kalli, Derek, Carter, Dawson, Gracie, Kenna,
Taylor and Izabella; sister-in-law, Loretta Prantner; many nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wilton “Doc” Vanek,
and her brothers and sisters.
Funeral services for Rose Marie Vanek will be held at 11 a.m.
Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010 at First Lutheran Church in Glenville with
the Rev. Theresa Turnbull officiating. Interment will be at Greenwood
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1 at
Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service
at the church.

Marjorie May (Hermanson) GRAVES 1925-2009
Marjorie May Hermanson Graves, 84, of Austin, died Tuesday, Dec.
29, 2009 at Faribault Commons in Faribault, Minn.
She was born May 8, 1925 in London, Minn. to Gilbert and Mary (Allen)
Hermanson.
She graduated from Austin High School in the class of 1942 and
began working for the Geo. A. Hormel Co. in the Austin Office Accounting
Department where she worked until her retirement. She was married to
August Olson and later in life she married James McGuire and Arthur
"Bill" Graves, all of whom preceded her in death. Marjorie was an
avid reader and was a 50 year member of the Women of the Moose Austin
Lodge and a volunteer with the Red Cross.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands
and a brother, LaVerne Hermanson.
Marjorie is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: Stephen
and Ileen Olson, Faribault, Minn., Allen Olson, Owatonna, Minn.,
Bridget Olson, Owatonna, Minn.; grandchildren, Stephanie Olson,
Angela Tamke, Scott Olson, Brandon Olson, Corie Olson, Trevor
Olson; great-grandchildren, Bronson Tamke, Ethan Tamke, Kyra
Olson, Erika Hollerud, Atlas Olson, Zepplyn Olson; brother and
sister-in-law, Donald D. and Carol Hermanson, Alamosa, Colo.; nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 at
Clasen-Jordan Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Tamke officiating. Interment
will be in Woodbury Cemetery, Lyle, Minn. Visitation will be at
Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. and for one hour
before the service on Monday.
Casket Bearers will be, Scott Olson, Brandon Olson, Trevor Olson,
Craig Hollerud, Chad Tamke and Marcus Hanson.

Robert James Noble 1927-2009
Robert James Noble, 82, of Austin, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009 at
his home.
He was born Jan. 2, 1927 in Mower County to Hanniball and Katherine
(Rolland) Noble. He married Bessie Cottrell on Sept. 8, 1945 in Lakewood,
N.J. He served in the US Navy during World War II. Robert is also a
retired employee of Hormel Foods. Robert loved to hunt, fish, play
cards, bowl and golf. He liked to spend time with family and friends.
His is survived by his wife, Bessie, Austin; children, Linda Bumgarner,
Austin, Robert Jr. Noble (Lou Jean), Rochester, Thomas Noble (Cynthia),
Dodge Center and Lisa Primavera (George) Boca Raton, Fla; five
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Roger Noble,
Austin, Ross Noble, Austin, Janet Bjork (Joe) Embarrass, Minn.,
Barbara Underland (Gary), Owatonna, Minn. and Judith Beck (Robert),
Congor, Minn; a sister-in-law, Irene Noble, Austin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Ronald and his
sisters, Evylin Duenow and Virginia Tesch.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010
at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Pat Toschak officiating.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home and one
half hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will
be in Grandview Cemetery with military rites by Adams American Legion
Post #146.
Casket bearers will be Eugene Bumgarner, Andrew Noble, Adam Noble,

Michael G. Vilt 1945-2009
Michael G. Vilt, 64, of Santa Clara, died on Dec. 18, 2009, at
Kaiser Hospital-Santa Clara from heart failure.
He was born on October 22, 1945 in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, the
son of Edward C. Vilt and Harriett (Tostenson) Thorsheim. He graduated
from Austin High School in 1963 and Austin Community College in 1965.
He moved to California in 1970 where he worked and lived the remainder
of his life.
Survivors include his brother, Edward (Linda) Vilt, Austin; nephew
Michael (Erin) Holgate of Woodbury, Minn.; nieces, Melissa (Jamison
Wessels) Holgate, Granada, Minn., Elizabeth (Kevin) LaFrance, Albert
Lea, Minn., Andrea Vilt, Austin, Stephanie Vilt, Mankato, Minn; one
great-nephew and two great-nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Mary Bea Hill,
in April of 2009.
A family memorial service will be planned at a later date with burial at
the Bohemian Cemetery at Myrtle, Minn.

Dorothy Jean (nee Sayles) Lord 1935-2009
Dorothy Jean Lord, 74, of Austin died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009 at her
winter home in Florida.
She was born June 16, 1935 in Austin to David and Zelma (Staley) Sayles.
Dorothy graduated from Austin High School in 1953. On May 12, 1956, she
married Delmer Lord at the First United Methodist Church in Austin. She
retired after many years of banking.
Dorothy loved to cook and entertain her entire family. Gatherings
at Thanksgiving and Christmas were her favorite times. She loved growing
flowers and rose bushes and sitting on her patio, where she could see
it all. She cherished time spent with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents David and Zelma Sayles
and sister Lorraine.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Delmer Lord, Austin; daughters,
Beth (Dean) Oakes, Muscatine, Iowa, Gale (Bradley) Switzer, Austin;
grandchildren, Bryan (Michelle), Samuel, Benjamin, Kirstin, and Tyler;
great-grandchildren, Gracie and Olivia; brother, Raymond Sayles; and
many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010 at
First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Patricia Toschak officiating.
Interment will be in Enterprise Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be
on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and for one hour before the service at the
church on Saturday.

Rachel Eloise (Marsh) Holt 1911-2002
Rachel Eloise (Marsh) Holt, 91, died Nov. 30, 2002, of heart failure
at Lakeview Home, Two Harbors.
She was born on June 19, 1911, in Glenwood City, Wis. She lived most
of her life in Austin and spent the past four years residing at Lakeview
Nursing Home in Two Harbors.
Survivors include sons, Ronald of Tampa, Fla.; and Marvin (Sandy) of
Two Harbors; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Donald D. Holtorf, 69 1933-2002
Donald D. Holtorf, age 69, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Sunday,
Dec. 8, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
Born in Mantorville, Minnesota on March 7, 1933, to John and Bertha
Holtorf, he opened and operated Don's Shoe Repair from 1959 until his
retirement in 1995. The devotion to his business was evident in his motto:
"We mend the rips, patch the holes, fix the heels and save the soles." His
devotion to his community was witnessed in his involvement in membership
at the Moose Lodge and Knights of Columbus. Don enjoyed camping, playing
cards and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed traveling and
wintering in Texas.
Mr. Holtorf is survived by his wife, Carolyn; their children, Mary
(Dan) Clennon of Austin; Ann (Tim) Williams of Austin; Michael (Cindy)
Holtorf of Austin; Donald (Liz) Holtorf of Faribault; Tom (Colleen)
Holtorf of Lisle, Ill.; Robert (Jolene) Holtorf of Austin; Paul
(Michelle) Holtorf of Austin; Kathy (Jim) Jackson of Medford; Steven
(Mary) Holtorf of Austin; Anthony Holtorf of Lino Lakes; brothers,
Dean Holtorf, Richard (Mary Ellen) Holtorf, Jack Holtorf, James Holtorf,
Jerry Holtorf; sisters, Lorraine Nierman, Lillian Suntken and Ladonna
Holtorf. He has 30 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous
beloved grandpets!
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bertha; sisters,
Verlie Lehman, Marian Becker, Beverly Holtorf and granddaughter, Gina
Clennon.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 12,
2002, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson officiating.
Casket bearers will be Benjamin Clennon, Jonathan Holtorf, Joseph Holtorf,
Thomas Holtorf, Jr., Michael S. Petersen and James Jackson, Jr. Interment
is at Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at

Kermit Albert Howell 1925-2002
Kermit Albert Howell, 77, died Nov. 9, 2002, in Austin.
He was born Aug. 22, 1925, in Salina, Kan., to Charles Benjamin and
Minnie Marie (Friesen) Howell. He grew up in New Virginia, Iowa. He
served in the United States Army during World War II. He saw action in
Iwo Jima and was also stationed on Saipan and Guam Islands in the Pacific.
In 1950, he married Maxine Hanley of Osceola, Iowa. They lived in
Indianola and Grundy Center, Iowa. Kermit attended Iowa State College
in Ames, Iowa, graduating in 1955 with a major in agricultural agronomy.
He taught agricultural education for several years at schools in Bloomfield
and Muscatine, Iowa, and Elizabeth, Ill.
In 1959, he married Madge Slaughter of Queen City, Mo. Kermit was a
member of the Queen City Baptist Church.
He worked with Wayne's Feeds in Tama, Griswold and Clear Lake, Iowa,
in the sales department of the Swift Corporation in Chicago, Ill., as
the first administrator of the Schuyler County Nursing Home, and as a
greeter and demonstrator at Wal-Mart. He was a member of Lions Club
International. He also received advanced degrees from Northeast Missouri
State University.
In 1992, he married Marjorie Thompson of Trenton, Mo.
Kermit moved to Austin in 1999 and was a member of the Fidelity
Masonic Lodge of Austin and was a life member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars.
Survivors include daughter, Victoria (John) Beringer, Las Vegas, Nev.;
sister, Mildred Wicks, Austin; brothers, Charles Howell, Fritch, Texas;
LaVon (Clyta) Howell, New Virginia, Iowa; nieces and nephews.
Services: Were held in Queen City, Mo. on Nov. 23, 2002. Military services
were held at the cemetery.

Mrs. Harry (Laura Wakefield) Brooks, 80, died Sunday afternoon at
Memorial Hospital, Spring Valley, after a month's Illness.
A resident of Grand Meadow, she is survived by her husband; six
daughters, Mrs. Harold (Helen) Brown, Mrs. Kenneth (Sybil) Ostgard, Mrs.
George (Winnie) Nashold, Grand Meadow, Mrs. F. J. (Mildred), St. Clair,
Minn., Mrs. Velva Wolfe, Mrs. C. L. (Judy) Reiswig, Austin; a son, Dale
Wakefield, Austin; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Grand Meadow.

Larry Craig Ingersoll, 53 1949-2002
Larry Craig Ingersoll, 53, of Austin died Friday morning, Dec. 13, 2002,
at his home in Austin.
He was born November 19, 1949, the son of Ivan and Lois (Long) Ingersoll
in Austin. He attended school in Austin and enlisted in the United States
Army in 1967. He served with the 1st Cavalry Infantry Division in Germany
and Vietnam until his discharge in 1970.
After returning to Minnesota, Larry drove a semi until his retirement
in 1993. On September 3, 1994, he married Beverly Haskin. He was a member
of Crane Community Chapel and VFW Post 1216. Larry enjoyed his family,
camping, fishing, lying about fishing, NASCAR racing and football. Larry
was known for his love, his loyalty and his sense of humor. His family
and friends will miss him.
Survivors include his wife Beverly Ingersoll of Austin; one son, Brandon
Ingersoll; two daughters, Tammy (Will) Davenport and Tonya Ingersoll all
of Austin; two step-sons, Michael (Tracey) Haskin of Cottage Grove and
Allen (Heidi) Haskin of Austin; one step-daughter, Dena (Randy Hegna)
Haskin of Austin; 19 grandchildren; his parents, Ivan and Lois Ingersoll
of Austin; one brother, Tony (Diane) Ingersoll of Claremont; three sisters,
Mary (Ken) Leichtman of Mapleview, Helen Kamp of Austin and Charlene Shipp
of St. Louis, Mo.; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
His grandparents, one sister, a granddaughter and his father-in-law
preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at
the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ron Barnett officiating. Interment
with military honors by the VFW Post 1216 will follow the service in
Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Worlein Funeral Home
on Monday, Dec. 16, from 4 to 8 p.m. and for one-hour prior the service
on Tuesday.
Casketbearers will be Bruce Tabor, Gary Tabor, Larry Tabor, Brian

Wilbur Jennings, 86 1916-2002
Wilbur Jennings, 86, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at
his son's home in Rochester.
He was born August 7, 1916, in rural Grand Meadow, Mower county, Minnesota.
He graduated from Grand Meadow School in 1934. As a young man he sheared
sheep in the Grand Meadow area, operated a trap line on the Rainey River
and worked in the Fire Camps of northern Minnesota.
On August 9, 1940, he married Edna Armbrust at the Queen of Angels
Catholic Church in Austin. In 1941, Wilbur established Jennings Scrap
Yard in Spring Valley. He served in the US Navy during World War II,
with his tour of duty in the South Pacific. In 1965, he opened Rochester
Iron & Metal with his son, Gene. In 1978, he opened the Dan Jennings Co
in Austin with his son, Daniel. Edna died May 31, 1998.
Survivors include sons, Gene (Karen), Rochester; Daniel, Austin; three
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Charlotte (Cliff)
Keller, Austin; Juanita Pepper, Federal Way, Wash.; Eileen Lindal,
Tualatin, Ore.; brothers, Don (Edith), El Cajon, Calif.; Roger (Margaret),
Austin; Raymond (Ruth), Benson, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Service: A private family service will be held.

Doris E. Johnson, 77 ca.1925-2002
Doris Evelyn (McRoberts) Johnson, age 77, of Ebenezer Ridges Care Center,
Burnsville, formerly of Rochester and LeRoy, Minn., passed away on Saturday,
Dec. 14, 2002, surrounded by her family.
She is lovingly survived by her daughters, Peggy Anne and husband Larry
Johnson of Nisswa, formerly of Lakeville, and Kaye Marie Johnson Taylor and
husband Brad Taylor of Eagan; also survived by treasured grandchildren,
Laurie Lee Johnson and Jeffrey Lee Johnson and his fiancee Christine
Kendrick of Burnsville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard L. Johnson, in 1915.
Doris was a former employee of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. She will
be fondly remembered by family and many dear friends in the Rochester and
LeRoy areas.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, with
visitation at 10 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian
Church of LeRoy. Burial will be in the LeRoy Cemetery. For further details

Virginia E. (Gersting) Johnson 1921-2002
Virginia E. Johnson, 81, of Elk River, and formerly of Le Sueur, Minnesota,
died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at the Guardian Angels Care Center of Elk River.
She was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Minot, N.D., to George and Nora
(Carlson-Oen) Gersting. She grew up in the Minot area and graduated
from high school there.
On October 15, 1949, she married Fred Johnson in Minot. The couple lived
in several communities including Minot, N.D., Bismarck, N.D., St. Paul.,
Austin, Bloomington, Le Sueur, and most recently Virginia lived in Elk
River. While living in Austin, she and her husband opened the Sterling
State Bank of Austin in 1958. Virginia was an active volunteer at the
nursing home in Austin, and was also active in several churches including
Our Savior's Lutheran of Austin, Normandale Lutheran Church of Edina and
First Lutheran Church of Le Sueur. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, and
entertaining.
Survivors include son, Bernie (Pam) Johnson, Minnetonka; daughter,
Karen (Tom) Welle, Monticello; two grandsons; nieces and nephews.

George T. Knutson, 80 1922-2002
George T. Knutson, 80, of Roseville, and formerly of Austin, died Friday,
Dec. 13, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul.
He was born July 12, 1922, in Rake Iowa, to Charles and Altha Knutson.
He farmed and worked for over 30 years at Wilson Foods in Albert Lea. A
World War II veteran, George served in Co. B 130th infantry division U.S.
Army, saw action in the Pacific theater, following the war was in the army
of occupation in Germany, where he took down the last American Flag at the
completion of the occupation. George also served as a Presidential Guard
for President Harry S. Truman.
On July 28, 1977, he married Margaret Maschka in Austin. George was
a life member of the VFW and member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles,
Albert Lea.
Survivors include wife, Margaret Knutson, Roseville; daughter, Soraya
(David) Cornick, Albert Lea; six stepchildren, Jerry (Kathleen) Maschka,
Mankato; Beverly (Jack) Bell, Chanhassen; Denny (Linda) Maschka, Austin;
Dean (Karen) Maschka, Roseville; Steve (Cindy) Maschka, Austin; Robert
Maschka (Glen Ernst), Roseville; four grandchildren; numerous

Allan "Pete" Kuhlmann, 73, of rural Sargeant, Mower county, Minnesota,
died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.
He was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Carpenter, Iowa, to Hans and Cora
(Carlsgaurd) Kuhlmann. On April 29, 1950, he married Jean Holst at
St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Pete farmed all his life and also
worked for Golden Dairy, Midwest Breeders Association and Lyle, Oakland
and London grain elevators. He was a member of Dexter United Methodist
Church.
Survivors include wife, Jean; sons, Bucky Kuhlmann, LeRoy; Peter (Vicki)
Kuhlmann, Rose Creek; two grandchildren; brothers, James (Audrey) Kuhlmann,
Hokah; Howard (Jean) Kuhlmann, Arvada, Colo.; Jay (Evelyn) Kuhlmann, Cedar
Falls, Iowa; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Catherine L. Kuth, 80, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at St. Mary's
Hospital, Rochester.
She was born Aug. 28, 1922, in Indianapolis, Ind., to L. C. and Rose
(Grannan) Leuty. Catherine graduated from Purdue University in the spring
of 1943. She belonged to the Delta Gamma Sorority. She met and married John
W. Kuth in November 1943, while he was stationed at Purdue University. They
moved to Austin in 1947. Catherine was a homemaker and also taught fifth
grade for two years. She was a volunteer at the Sacred Heart Care Center
and enjoyed traveling with her husband during retirement.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Tom (Bunny) Kuth, Kasson;
Mark Kuth, Dodge Center; Jim (Fawn) Kuth, Houston, Texas; George Kuth,
Everett, Wash.; daughters and sons-in-law, Cathe "Anne" (Tom) Brunkan,
Sioux City, Iowa; Mary (Ed) Lunn, Stewartville; Rosemary Simonson-Kuth,

She was preceded in death by her husband on May 6, 2001; parents; and

Winifred Leonard, of Rancho Bernardo, California, formerly of Austin,
Minnesota, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002.
In the 1930s, she joined the Austin High School faculty and taught
biology. She joined the Austin Junior College faculty when it was founded
and taught biology. She also became the Dean of Women.
In 1966, she became Dean of Students at the Austin Community College and
held the position until she retired in 1975.

Alden "Eldy" Miller, 51, of Owatonna, died unexpectedly at his home
on Monday, Dec. 9, 2002.
He was born in Austin, Minnesota, on Feb. 24, 1951, to Delbert and
LaVerne (Ferguson) Miller. He graduated from Austin High School in 1970
and attended Austin Community College for two years. After college he
worked at Owatonna Manufacturing Company until the company closed in 1982.
In 1977, he married Roxanne VanErp at Associated Church in Owatonna.
They raised two children. Alden worked at Crown Cork and Seal in Faribault
and had been employed with them for the last 20 years. He was a member of
the Owatonna Eagles. His hobbies included watching his son play baseball,
spectator sports, as well as hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed spending
time with his children.
Survivors include his wife, Roxanne, Owatonna; children, Dustin and
Kari, both at home; mother, LaVerne Miller, Austin; brothers, Richard
and Tonya Miller, Austin; Dennis and Anna Miller, Manorville; sister,
Deanna and Douglas Bakken, Byron.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Ethyl Mae Moen, 94, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Sunday,
Dec. 8, 2002, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.
She was born Feb. 22, 1908, to John L. and Edith (Corson) Morgan in
Austin. In 1925, she married Archie "Art" d'Etienne. He died in 1937.
Ethyl married John S. Moen in 1956. They were active members of Tronhjem
Lutheran Church, rural Oakland. Ethyl worked for many years for Mr. John
Treef at the Austin Fur Shoppe. She enjoyed her grandchildren.
Survivors include daughter, Bethyl (Ralph) George, Austin; son, Morgan
(Mary) d'Etienne, Dallas, Texas; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren;
six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents; husbands; sisters, Ruby Partridge

Melchor J. "Mack" Morehouse, 85 1917-2002
Melchor J. "Mack" Morehouse, 85, of Austin, died Wednesday, December 4,
2002, at the Austin Medical Center due to an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 14, 1917, in Alexandria, S.D., to Romaine and Clara
(Elfert) Morehouse. On Sept. 24, 1940, he married Martha Ripka in Mora.
They lived in St. Paul and Mora. In 1946, Mack enlisted in the U.S. Navy
and served in Guam in World War II. In 1959, he moved his family to Austin.
He was employed by Marigold Dairy as a milkman until 1979 and held various
odd jobs until his retirement. He was past Post Commander in 1955 and
1956 of America Legion Post 201 and VFW in Mora.
Survivors include wife, Martha Morehouse, Austin; children, Wayne
Morehouse, Pequot Lakes; Janet (Jim) Seiver, Rochester; Michael Morehouse,

Steven R. Morgan, 52, of Austin, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at
his home.
He was born March 6, 1950, in Austin, to Robert L. and Delores I.
(Iverson) Morgan. He was a life-long resident of Austin and worked as
a registered nurse in the emergency room at St. Mary's Hospital in
Rochester. On July 24, 1971, he married Mary E. Musser in Mankato.
Steven was a member of Crane Community Chapel, the Eagles, American
Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216 all of Austin. He enjoyed hunting
and fishing and friends and family.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Morgan, Austin; daughter, Terra
Morgan and son, Jesse Morgan, both of Austin; two grandchildren; brother,

Armella Anna Mullenbach, 95, of Adams, died Saturday, December 7, 2002, at
Adams Health Care Center.
She was born April 15, 1907, in Johnsburg, to Mathias and Mary (Kramer)
Mullenbach. Armella attended school in Johnsburg and worked for many years
as a housekeeper in Austin. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church
of Johnsburg and enjoyed painting and working jigsaw puzzles.
Survivors include brother and sister-in-law, Otto and Marcella

Keith Walter Paulson, 69 1933-2002
Keith Walter Paulson, 69, of Austin, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at
St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.
He was born May 18, 1933, in Ames, Iowa to Herbert and Esther (Hougen)
Paulson. He graduated from Ames (Iowa) High School in 1952. While serving
in the Army from 1954 until 1956, he was stationed in Germany.
On August 25, 1956, he married Lois Grangaard in Waukon, Iowa. In 1958,
he graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa with a BA in education.
He first taught and began the tennis program in Charles City, Iowa beginning
in 1958. In 1964, the couple moved to Austin where Keith was a teacher and
tennis coach for high school boys teams. He retired in 1991 after suffering
a severe stroke.
Keith belonged to St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the North West Tennis
Association and enjoyed traveling, reading, restoring furniture and
his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Lois; daughter, Sarah (Ken) Nygren,
Lakeville; sons, Dan (Linda Hesketh) Paulson, Eugene, Ore.; Tom Paulson,
New Brighton; five grandchildren; brothers, Don (Marlene) Paulson,

Joseph R. Pollock 1907-2002
Joseph R. Pollock, 95, of Austin, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at his son's
home in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where he had lived since April.
He was born Feb. 8, 1907, in Lansing, to Alexander and Ida (Vermilyea)
Pollock. He lived on the family farm in Lansing until his graduation
from Austin High School in 1925. He then attended Hamilton Business
College in Mason City, Iowa. After three years with two rural banks in
southern Minnesota, he came to Austin where he joined the First National
Bank as a teller in December 1933. After 38 years with the First National
Bank, Joe retired as vice president.
He married Mildred Wamsley of Clarksville, Iowa on Nov. 1, 1935. Joe
was active in civic affairs. He was a Jaycee and at one time belonged to
Kiwanis. He was a long-time member of the Izaak Walton League, the Elks
Lodge #414, and the Austin Country Club. He was a member of Westminster
Presbyterian Church of Austin where he served as a elder and trustee.
He also served as a money counter for the church every Tuesday morning
until his recent move to Oshkosh.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Joanne Pollock
of Oshkosh, Wis.; two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 1994; and brothers,
Harold and Earl.
Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. today, Dec. 9, 2002, at the funeral home and
Tuesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Dorothy E. Roberts, 85, of Adams, formerly of Lake Crystal, died Friday,
Dec. 13, 2002, at Adams Health Care Center.
She was born Sept. 8, 1917, in Truman to John and Erma (Anderson) Winch.
After her marriage to Everett Roberts, they farmed in the Lake Crystal area
until her husband's death in 1975. She moved to Lake Crystal and lived
there until she entered Adams Health Care Center in 1994. She enjoyed
helping people and always had a friendly smile. She liked crocheting and
belonged to the Eastern Star.
Survivors include son Robert (Sue) Roberts, Elkton; daughter Wilma
Roberts, Bemidji; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother
Elmer Winch, Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters and five
brothers.

She was born Feb. 14, 1912, in Harrisburg, Pa., to Elmer and Sarah
(Garman) Clark. As a young child her family moved from Pennsylvania to
Harmony, Minn. On Feb. 28, 1928, she married Herman Jacobson in Ostrander.
Herman died Sept. 17, 1954. In 1956, she married Harry Baldwin; he died in
1967. She married Donald W. Salzmann in 1968; he died in 1978. May moved
to Austin in 1952. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and enjoyed
sewing and crocheting.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Lorraine and Norman
Hildestad, Austin; Eldena and Jerry Seabright, Spring Valley; Mary Anne

Theodore L. "Ted" Seufert 1909-2002
Theodore "Ted" L. Seufert, 93, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died
Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Heritage Care Center, Mason City, Iowa.
He was born June 6, 1909, in Lebonan, Mo., to Macarius and Barbara
(Schmidt) Seufert. He grew up and attended school in Mt. Angel, Ore. He
moved to Austin in 1938. On May 28, 1940, he married Magdalene Loecher
in Johnsburg. Ted worked for several years at the Hormel Food Corporation
until his retirement. He moved to Mason City, Iowa in January 1998. He was
a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening, traveling
and woodworking.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne Bateman, Virginia,

Sylvia M. (Kime) Swaney, 84 1918-2002
Sylvia M. Swaney, age 84, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, Dec. 17,
2002, at St Mark's Lutheran Home.
Sylvia was born March 14, 1918 in Jackson, Minn. to Elmer and Anna
(Petersen) Kime. She moved to Austin in 1923, and retired from Hormel
Foods after 37 years of service. She was an avid bowler and was inducted
into the Austin Bowling Hall of Fame in 1992.
Survivors include two daughters: Linda Vogel, Minneapolis, Minn.,
and Pam Vlasaty, Austin; four grandchildren: Kimberly Lemon, Jeffrey
Bang, Nickolas Vlasaty, Joshua Vlasaty; three great-grandchildren;
sister and brother-in-law: Myrtle and Roger Reed, Austin; sister-in-law:
Vera Kime, Austin and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by son, Dennis Swaney; her parents; sister:
Amilda Wollschlager; brothers: George Kime, Lester Kime and Duane Kime
of Austin.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at
the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Pat Toschak officiating.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Mayer Funeral Home
and one hour before the service on Friday at the church.
The casket bearers will be Steve Kime, Wesley Johnson, Ronald Kime,
Clifford Wollschlager, Gary Wollschlager, Clayton Reed, Edwin Wollschlager.

Lillie Lisetta (Schroeder) Traff, 90 1912-2002
Lillie Lisetta Traff, 90, of Austin died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002 at
Austin Medical Center. Austin, Minnesota.
She was born August 26, 1912, in Caledonia to Gustav and Methilda (Kruse)
Schroeder. She attended Houston County District #50 School. She married
Emil Joseph Traff on March 29, 1938, in Eltzen. She worked as a cook for
many years at the Austin Country Club and Tolly's Time Out. Her hobbies
included cooking, sewing and crocheting, playing cards with her family,
watching hockey and baseball. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical
Lutheran Church and active in the Ladies Aid.
Survivors include son Lester (Barbara) Traff, Austin; daughters Norma
(William) Bray, Austin, Leona (John) Detwiler, Austin, Gloria Traff, Ft.
Collins, Colo., 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; four
great-great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; brother
Carl Schroeder, Caledonia; sisters Ella Meiners, Caledonia, Amanda
Olson, Caledonia; sisters-in-law Helen Schroeder, Caledonia, Lillian
Bresau, La Crosse, Wis., Phyllis Traff, LaCrescent, Evelyn (Donald)
Kessel, La Crosse, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, brother Arnold Schroeder,
sister Clara Pohlman, great-grandchildren James Bray, Jakob Detwiler,
Thad Holtz, nephews Kurt Corcoran and Kenneth Traff and brothers-in-law.
Visitation: 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at the funeral home
and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Service: 1 p.m., Monday, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church
with Pastor Ted Barthels officiating.
Interment: Grandview Cemetery, Austin.

Hedwig Anna Ulwelling 1909-2002
Hedwig Anna Ulwelling, 93, of Adams, formerly of Rochester, died
Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at Adams Health Care Center, Adams.
She was born Oct. 25, 1909, to Nicholas and Gertrude (Simon) Ulwelling
in rural Johnsburg. She attended school at St. John's in Johnsburg. She
farmed on the family farm until 1951, was a waitress at Pine Room in Adams
until the late 1950s, then moved to Rochester to work as a housekeeper at
St. Mary's until her retirement. She moved to Adams Health Care Center
in 1997. She was a member of Legion of Mary, St. Raphael's Guild,
St. John's Church and ladies guild and St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include sisters, Helen Reinartz, Austin; Odelia Klapperich,
Anoka.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Aloysius.
Visitation: One hour before the service Monday at the church.
Service: 1 p.m. memorial service, Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at St. John's
Church in Johnsburg with the Rev. Greg Leif officiating.
Interment: St. John's Cemetery, Johnsburg.

Ruth Pearl (Barnett) Wallem 1928-2002
Ruth Pearl Wallem, 74, died Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at Field Crest
Care Center, Hayfield.
She was born March 25, 1928, to Oscar and Cetha (Wyant) Barnett in
Dodge Center. On July 23, 1946, she married Harry Wallem. Ruth was a
life long resident of the Austin and Sargeant areas and has been in Field
Crest Care Center for the past four years. She was a homemaker and worked
as a cook at various places. She also enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include husband, Harry Wallem, Sargeant; daughters, Susan
(George) Barley, La Grange, N.C.; Nancy Wallem, Dexter; sons, Andrew
(Nicole) Wallem, Dexter; Harry (Lisa) Wallem, Jr., Brownsdale; four
grandchildren; brothers, Jim (Delores) Barnett, Austin; Clayton Barnett,
Austin; Earl (Marge) Barnett, Austin; Donald (Cleo) Barnett, Austin;
sisters, Margaret Cook, Minneapolis; Linda (Fred) Drehobl, Chicago, Ill.
Visitation: 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at the funeral home.
Service: 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Ronald Barnett
officiating.
Interment: Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Dexter.
