Myra Genora (Nelson) Jacobson, 88

1914-2002

Myra Genora Jacobson, 88, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Saturday morning, November 9, 2002, at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born July 21, 1914, in Rose Creek Township, Mower County, Minnesota, the daughter of Gilbert and Mable (Naversath) Nelson. She received her education in Lyle, Minnesota. On July 1, 1933, she married Oliver Joy Jacobson in Lyle. They resided in Albert Lea until moving to Austin in 1949. Oliver died on Oct. 8, 1989. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and a former member of Six-Mile Grove Lutheran Church, rural Lyle. She entered St. Mark's Lutheran Home on Dec. 3, 2001.

Survivors include, one daughter, Mavis (Don) Rasmussen of Fremont, Nebraska; one son, Arlen (Mary) Jacobson of West St. Paul; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernett Nelson of Austin; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oliver Jacobson; a son, Dennis Jacobson and a brother.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Six-Mile Grove Lutheran Church, rural Lyle, with Rev. Lydia Mittag officiating.

Interment: Six-Mile Grove Lutheran Church Cemetery

Pearl (Martinson) Jovaag

1903-2002

Pearl Martinson Jovaag was born May 5, 1903 to the Reverend Andrew and Anna Martinson in Honan Province, China.

She came to America at age 18 and attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. She then received her nursing degree from Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, Ill.

She married the Rev. J.O. Jovaag August 26, 1928 in Belmont, Iowa. She was a true helpmate to her husband as he served congregations in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Gonvick, MN, Lakefield, MN, St. James, MN, Springfield, MN, and after retirement at St. Olat Lutheran, Austin, MN, Central Lutheran, Minneapolis, MN and many small parishes in Texas and Louisiana. She had a true and sincere interest in each person she met and never tired of hearing their life stories while sharing her faith. She was a concerned, dedicated loving mother to her six children, a good and faithful wife, a sterling friend and a bright and shining light wherever she went.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jonas, her son Jon, She is survived by her sons Harold (Shirley), Orlando, Fla., and Rev. Arvid (Lois) Jovaag, Austin; her daughters Corinne Bustad (M. Arthur), St. Paul, Jan Jovaag Ansorge, Austin, and Joy Ling Hill (Ted), Newport News, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

We remember her laughter, her soft velvety hands, her unending concern for her children and her extensive and lifelong correspondence. We treasure our memories.

We thank those who cared so lovingly for our mother these past two years. She was at peace and felt safe in her assisted living quarters and finally in her nursing home room where she was attended by "angels of mercy".

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, 4:30 p.m. at St. Marks Lutheran Home Chapel with The Rev. Greg Mannel and The Rev. Harold Deye officiating. Visitation is from 3 p.m. until time of service. Pianist will be Kathy Mannel and soloists will be Adam Ansorge and Kathy Mannel.

Casket Bearers: Jon Jovaag, Adarn Ansorge, Seth Ansorge Jovaag, Eirad Jovaag, Marcus Bustad, Jonas Bustad.

Memorials are preferred to St. Marks Lutheran Home Chaplaincy Fund.

A second service will be held Tuesday 10:30a.m. at St Anthony Park Lutheran Church in St. Paul, MN with The Rev. Glen Berg-Moberg officiating. Organist will be Dorothea Ofstadahl and soloist will be Adam Ansorge.

Interment will be in Sundown Lutheran Cemetery in Springfield, MN.

Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Elma Lydia (Polo) Kesty, 86

1916-2002

Elma Lydia Kesty, 86, of Austin, Minnesota died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.

She was born March 9, 1916 in Thomson Township, near Duluth the daughter of Niilo and Dela (Polo) Polo. She received her education in a country school in Thomson Township. In 1967, she married Einor Kesty in Cromwell. They made their home in Cloquet before his death. After his death, Elma moved to Clear Lake, Iowa to live. She moved to Austin in 1981, living most of the following years in the Twin Towers.

Survivors include sisters Sophie Parenteau, Carlton, Esther Aho, Cloquet, Jenny Allen, Hermiston, Ore., Arlene Fogle, Tacoma, Wash.; nieces and nephews.

Her parents, husband, and four brothers, Walter, Carl, Arthur and Johnny Polo preceded her in death.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday.

Service: 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Greg Mannel officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Barry Klapperich, 49

1953-2002

Barry Klapperich, 49, of Whitefish, Montana, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002.

Barry was born July 23, 1953 in Osage, Iowa, to Lawrence and Esther Klapperich. He grew up on the family farm near Stacyville, Iowa. He attended school in Meyer and St. Ansgar, Iowa.

On Dec. 15, 1979 he married Beverly Fisher in Riceville, Iowa. They moved to Montana in 1981 and have one daughter, Tina. Barry enjoyed spending time with his daughter, Tina, fishing, camping, hiking, horseback riding, spending time with friends and family, playing cards and golfing. Barry was a guide on horseback tours in Glacier National Park, he did ranch work and trained and showed horses. He also guided hunting and fishing trips into the Bob Marshall and Great Bear Wilderness areas. He and his wife owned and operated Spring Prairie Garden in Whitefish, Montana.

Barry is survived by his wife, Bev, and daughter, Tina, of Whitefish, Montana; his parents, Lawrence & Esther Klapperich, of Stacyville, Iowa, brother Owen Klapperich (Linda) of Kalispell, Montana, sister Rose Schubert (Dave) of Austin, brother Reid Klapperich (Barb) of Stacyville, Iowa, sister Dorette Fravel (Leonard) Cresco, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

Barry was preceded in death by their daughter Julie Ellen Klapperich and a sister, Judy.

A private viewing was held earlier this week and cremation has taken place.

Service: 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at Stillwater Free Lutheran Church, 1401 Church Drive Kalispell, Montana with Tim Bartholomew officiating. Another service will be held later this month in Meyer, Iowa.

Memorials: An educational fund for Tina in care of the Whitefish Credit Union, 300 Baker Ave. Whitefish, Montana 59937.

James L. "Jim" Kolb, 70

1932-2002

James L. "Jim" Kolb, 70, of Chatfield, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield.

He was born February 9, 1932, in Melrose to Matt and Ethel (Minor) Kolb. He grew up and graduated from high school in Austin. He lived in Austin for 22 years and then moved to Rochester. On April 16, 1955, he married Agnes C. Riepe at St. Francis Catholic Church in Rochester. He was a mail carrier for 32 years in Rochester for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a founding member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife Agnes, Rochester; daughters Cathie (Chris) Refsland, Des Moines, Iowa, Barb (Paul) Schultz, Bloomington, Michelle (Al) Anderson, Dexter; sons Kevin (Deirdre) Kolb, Rochester, Steve Kolb, Minneapolis, Mark (Ann) Kolb, Chatfield, Ed (Lois) Obermeyer-Kolb, St. Paul; 15 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; sister Marny Smith, Nelson, Wis.; brothers Don Kolb, Rochester, Joe Kolb, Austin, Gene Kolb, Bloomington, Roger Kolb, Moose Lake, Paul Kolb, Faribault.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at the funeral home with a 5 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and 7 p.m. prayer service and for one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.

Service: 11 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester with the Rev. Paul Surprenant officiating.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Rochester.

Elma J. (Jesperson) Mattfeld

1912-2002

Elma J. Mattfeld, 90, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

She was born Aug. 14, 1912, to Iver and Rosa (Rosendahl) Jesperson in Royal, Iowa. She attended the University of Northern Iowa to receive a degree in music and graduated from the University of Iowa with a math degree. She taught math at the high school in Fort Dodge, Iowa before her marriage. On Sept. 14, 1941, she married Harold Mattfeld of Fort Dodge, Iowa. They moved to Austin in 1951. They were members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Austin where Elma sang in the choir and was active in Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the St. Olaf Hospital Auxiliary, University Women, Austin Country Club and political groups, did volunteer work and enjoyed playing bridge, golf and tennis. Elma was active traveling and playing golf and tennis until she had difficulty with Alzheimers. She lived at St. Mark's Lutheran Home and Sacred Heart Care Center for the last five years.

Survivors include her husband Harold Mattfeld, Austin; daughters Susan Brown, Shirley (Jim Sarbaugh) Mattfeld, Portland, Conn.; 2 grandsons; sisters Carla Jespersen, Storm Lake, Iowa, Lola Von Glan, Wall Lake, Iowa.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at the funeral home.

Service: 2 p.m., Thursday, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. William Natzke officiating. Casket bearers will be Charles Enger, Robert Brinkman, Bruce Jordan, Richard Seltz, Kenneth Carlson, Curtis Anderson, Will Sarbaugh and Jacob Sarbaugh.

Nellie Mae McGrand, 67

1935-2002

Nellie Mae McGrand, 67, of Mound, Minn., died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at the Methodist Hospital, St. Louis Park.

She was born Sept. 12, 1935, in Austin, Minn. and was raised in rural Freeborn County. She graduated from Blooming Prairie High School in 1953 and went on to Winona State University. In June 1956, she married Vern McGrand in Minneapolis. Nellie Mae was hardworking, independent, as well as a loving mother and wife. Generous and compassionate, there was nothing that she enjoyed more than giving lavishly to family and her wide circle of friends. Her philanthropy was not limited to those nearest her: Nellie Mae was a generous contributor to many charitable organizations including St. Joseph's Indian School and the Animal Humane Society. While in Albert Lea, Nell worked at First Federal and the Albert Lea Clinic. At the time of her death she was public relations director for Kenko.

Nellie Mae's death occurred peacefully after a long and courageous battle with illness. Her good humor and strength in facing adversity were an inspiration to everyone who knew her. The family wishes to acknowledge the support of Heidi Olson, nurse and special friend to Nellie Mae, who attended upon her during her final illness.

Survivors include her husband, Vern McGrand; children, Jeffrey, Jill and Scott McGrand, Macky Belanger, Kathy Barri, and Robert Kreiser; grandchildren, Robin (Ian) Pinegar, Nathan, Sena, Alex, Sam, Tyler and Travis McGrand, Mikey and Little Nellie Barri; sister, Beverly (Richard) Hart of Albert Lea; mother-in-law, Lil McGrand; sisters-in-law, Mary (Roger), and Jeanie; brother-in-law, Phil McGrand.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Leota Dearmin, and father, Dale Dearmin.

Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the Huber Funeral Home, Mound, and at the church one hour before the service.

The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Mound, with the Rev. Mader presiding.

Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Lake Falls, Minn.

Leland A. "Jack" McGrew, 85

1917-2002

Leland A. (Jack) McGrew, 85, of Burnsville, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, died Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at his home.

He was born June 24, 1917, in Minneapolis to Roy and Blanche McGrew. He resided in Minneapolis where he attended Washburn High School. On May 14, 1941 he married Mary Lou Dolliff. From 1942 to 1946, he served in World War II on the European Front with Patton's Third Army, 11th Armored Division.

He and his family moved to Austin after the war and resided there until recently. He was general manager of Gordon Electric and in sales with Strong Outdoor Advertising Company. He later bought Ace Advertising of Rochester. An active community leader, Jack was a founding member of the Austin YMCA, served on the YMCA area board, the YMCA National Council and was on the board of YMCA Camp Olson, Longville. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary, and First Congregational Church.

Survivors include his wife; daughters Kathy Villette, Chicago, Ill., Gini (Bill) Blunden, Littleton, Colo., Terry (Ken Lerczak) Truesdell, Apple Valley, Margo Flynn, Arcadia, Wis.; eleven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister Patricia Rose, Minnetonka; sister-in-law Marge McGrew; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John McGrew.

Service: 11 a.m, Saturday, November 9, 2002, at First Congregational Church.

Lena Myrtle (Buchan) Moffit

1906-2002

Lena Myrtle Moffit, 96, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002 at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center where she had resided for three years.

She was born March 6, 1906 in Sibley, Iowa, to Albert and Elizabeth (Dingle) Buchan and grew up in that area. On July 21, 1925 she married Robert Moffit in Adrian, Minnesota. They moved to Austin in 1944. She worked for Raymond's Nursing Home and later Burr Oak Manor, for many years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was involved in the Relief Society. She enjoyed making jam and playing cards.

She is survived by daughter Nettie (Clayton) Nei, Austin; son David (Gail) Moffit, Rio Rancho, N.M.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother Henry Buchan, Austin; sister Rose Bloom, Rose Creek.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters and two brothers.

Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Monday, at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Robert Flatt officiating.

Marion J. Murphy

1914-2002

Marion J. Murphy, 88, formerly of Austin, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in New Mexico.

He was born July 19, 1914, in Lyle, to John P. and Lulu (Gregg) Murphy. He was married to Rachel Hanson. Marion owned Murphy's Oil Company in Austin before retiring and moving to Rio Rancho, N.M. He had been in the oil business for over 35 years, with his own company for 13 years.

Marion served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, the Rio Rancho Elks Club and the Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include wife, Rachel Murphy, Rio Rancho, N.M.; daughter, Jana (Joe) Edwards, Placitas, N.M.; son, Jack Murphy, Austin; brothers, Vernon Murphy, Osage, Iowa; Richard Murphy, Austin; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Murphy; and brother, Chester Murphy.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Service: 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at the funeral home with Rev. James Peck officiating. The casket bearers will be Chad Schoenfelder, Bob Hanson, David Hanson, Jake Johnson, Larry Murphy and Rick Murphy.

Mildred V. (Farlinger) Nelson, 84

1918-2002

Mildred V. Nelson, age 84, of Austin, Minnesota, and formerly of Oakland, Minn., died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at the Austin Medical Center

She was born March 22, 1918, in Albert Lea, Minn., to George and Tillie (Prestegard) Farlinger.

She attended rural school near Albert Lea. She married Clifford Nelson on May 5, 1937, in Northwood, Iowa. Together they farmed in the Oakland area for almost 50 years. Mildred was a member of Oakland Lutheran Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Oakland Lutheran Church with the Rev. LaDonna Ekern officiating. Interment will be in the Oakland Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Wednesday at the church one hour before the service. Organist will be Kleone Wangen and soloist will be Kiven Lukes. Casket bearers and honorary bearers will be her grandchildren. Honorary bearers will be Sue Starrett, Jenny Nelson and Matt Nelson. Bearers will be Nicole Johnson, Bridgette Johnson, Jim Nelson, Craig Nelson, Scott Nelson and Mike Nelson.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Milford and Linda Nelson of Austin, Minn., Curtis and Narda Nelson of Fosston, Minn., Lowell and Dawn Nelson of Oakland, Minn.; daughter and son-in-law, LaVonne and Lowell Johnson of Albert Lea, Minn.; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Alta Farlinger of St. Ansgar, Iowa, Alta Joynes of Austin, Minn.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford, 1986; brothers, John (Jack) Farlinger and Norman Farlinger; sister, Gladys Schlie; grandson, Benjamin Nelson; and granddaughter, Jackie Nelson.

Collette Mary Neus, 80

1922-2002

Collette Mary Neus, 80, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002 at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center.

She was born February 23, 1922, in Adams to Jake and Amelia (Blonigan) Wagner. She married Conrad Neus on Aug. 17, 1940. They lived north of Adams until 1950 when they moved to a farm northwest of Lyle. Conrad died in 1970 and in 1971 she moved to Austin.

Survivors include daughters Judy (David) Bopp, Tipp City, Ohio, Sharron (Ronald) Butler, Shoreview, Nan (Bill) Wilson, Superior, Wisconsin, Cyndi (Scott) Bradley, Shoreview; sons Warren Neus, Prior Lake, Charles Neus, Austin; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother Don (Sharon) Wagner, Austin; sister Marlene (Oliver) Whalen, Rose Creek.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sisters Winnie Gabin and Gert Bellrichard.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m, Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at the funeral home where a 7:30 prayer service will be held and also for one hour before the service.

Service: 10 a.m., Tuesday, at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Father Joseph Fogal officiating.

John Colin "Jack" Rowe, 56

1946-2002

John "Jack" Colin Rowe, 56, of LeRoy died Thursday at his residence.

He was born April 20, 1946 at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin to Edgar "Choke" and Helen (Reagen) Rowe. He was baptized at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. He married Linda Halling in 1966 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in LeRoy. They were later divorced.

He remarried Anita Noske Winfield on August 22, 1987 in Rochester. Jack worked for the family concrete business until 1992. He loved Sunday drives on his motorcycle and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Anita, LeRoy; daughter Jodi (Glenn) Lonergan, Dexter; sons Jeremy (Waneda) Rowe, Dexter, John (Jessica) Rowe, Onalaska, Wis.; daughter Penny (Scott) Greeley, Lime Springs; step-sons Toby (Laurlae) Winfield, LeRoy, Cory (Robin Krause) Winfield, LeRoy; 7 grandchildren; brothers Joe (Sherri) Rowe, Chester, Iowa, Scott (Chris) Rowe of LeRoy.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Meghan Elizabeth Smith, 4, of Brownsdale, died at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

She was born Aug. 22, 1998, in Duluth, to Martin and Rachel Smith. The family has lived in Brownsdale for the past two years.

Survivors include parents, Martin and Rachel Smith, Brownsdale; brother, Benjamin Smith, Brownsdale; grandparents, Walter and Juanita Smith, Superior, Wis.; Larry and Kathy Johnson, Rochester; great-grandmother, Lorraine Johnson, Trimont.

She was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandmother, two maternal great-grandfathers and her paternal great-grandparents.

Darlene Ann Stoa, 70, of Austin, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Austin Medical Center in Austin.

She was born on Feb. 8, 1932 in Hollandale, the daughter of Jacob and Minnie (VanPuersem) VanderVoort.

On Feb. 25, 1949 Darlene married Clayton Orvin Stoa in Albert Lea. They had seven children. She worked for Freeborn County Health as a Home Health Aide and was active with her church in WELCA, circle, Sunday School, quilting and other church activities. She was also involved in Moscow 4-H club and AAL until her stroke in January, 1993, and with the Health Coalition meetings. She loved and cared for her children and grandchildren and enjoyed living on the farm. She liked helping and caring for others.

Survivors include her husband Clayton; sons Roger Dale (Carla) Stoa, Austin, James Clayton (JoAnne) Stoa, Whittier, Calif., Dean Oscar (Yvonne) Stoa, Rushford, Charles Delwin (Holly) Stoa, Blue Earth, Kevin Lee (Melissa) Stoa, Polk City, Iowa; daughter Kristine Marie (Lynn) Allas, Lansing; eleven grandchildren; brothers Everett (Janice) VanderVoort, Austin, Lee Parrish, Albert Lea; brother-in-law Melvin (Mildred) Stoa, Laporte; nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son Brian John Stoa and sister-in-law Dorothy Stoa.

Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Monday, at Moscow Lutheran Church with the Rev. LaDonna Ekern officiating.

Perry Tallman, Jr., 75

1927-2002

Perry Tallman, Jr., 75, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

He was born June 24, 1927 in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Oscar and Carrie (Hensley) Tallman. He attended school and served in the U.S. Navy during the end of World War II and and the Korean Conflict. He married Patricia Slowinski on July 2, 1966 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin. He was a retired employee of the Hormel Foods Corp., he also owned and operated Perry's Lawn Service. He was a member of the American Legion.

Surviviors include wife Patricia Tallman, Austin; daughter Melody Wynia, Austin; one grandson; brother Howard (Helen) Tallman, Austin; sister Helen (Bob) Hufstudder, Baton Rougue, La., nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, November 8, 2002, at the funeral home and for one hour before the service on Friday.

Barbara Ann Thompson, 64, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

She was born April 11, 1938, to Walter and Ida (Linnemeyer) Bray, in Wykoff. She married Dean McMartin and he died in 1973. Barbara moved to Brownsdale in 1978. On Feb. 11, 1981, she married Robert Thompson in Osage, Iowa. Barbara was a nursing assistant at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield for five years and 10 years at St. Mark's in Austin. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brownsdale. She enjoyed collecting dolls.

Donald Lee Trenary, 92

1910-2002

Donald Lee Trenary, 92, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002 at Austin Medical Center.

He was born July 13, 1910 in Austin to Loren and Blanche (Barnitz) Trenary. He attended schools in Austin, graduating with honors from Austin High School in 1928. He lettered in all sports and according to Don, he was an "athlete." He attended the University of Minnesota, later returning to Austin, where he worked in the Hormel Plant for 43 years. Don was a member of the Hormel Employees Credit Union Board of Directors. Don was an avid reader and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fly fishing, hunting and golf.

He began golfing at the Austin Country Club while in high school and over the years won many tournaments, including several Club championships. His 1930 trophy is on display there. Don attained the rank of Sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving from 1942 to 1945, with the 40th Engineers Combat Battalion, Co. H. He fought in many major battles and campaigns of World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Over the years, he attended most of the 40th Engineers annual reunions.

A confirmed bachelor, Don married Evelyn (Peterson) Chaffee, on December 10, 1960. Evelyn died in 1991. He lived in his home until he became ill on October 26, 2002 and entered the hospital.

He was survived by son and daughter-in-law Richard D. and Colette Chaffee of Austin, Grandson and wife Rodney and Jenny Chaffee of Fargo, N.D., Great Grandson Wyatte Chaffee of Fargo, N.D., Sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Dolores and Keith Judd of Austin, Marion Peterson of Palm Bay, Fla., nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, sister, Evelyn, (Mrs. O. P.) Dalager and an infant brother.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 11, 2002 at 1:30 P.M. at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with The Reverend Ronald Barnett officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin with Austin Post #91 American Legion and Olaf B. Damm Post #l216 VFW in charge of military rites. Friends may call at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and for one hour before the service on Monday. The family prefers memorials to the donor's choice.

Casket Bearers will be Rodney Chaffee, James Judd, Thomas Dunlap, Douglas Evans, Jason Evans and Daniel Evans.

Eugene M. "Gene" Utley, 69

1932-2002

Eugene "Gene" M. Utley, 69, of Blackduck died Nov. 18, 2002 at his residence in Moose Lake Township.

He was born on December 12, 1932 in Dexter the son of Jess D. and Arlet (Prehn) Utley. He was raised and attended school in Dexter for 4 days a week always taking Friday off for a walk or fishing. He enlisted in the US Army in 1948. He served in Korea and received 2 bronze Stars during the period of July 1950 to January 1951, one with "V" Device First Oak Leaf Cluster for Valor, and also receiving a Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Korea in August of 1950. He was honorably discharged in 1952 with the rank of Specialist First Class.

He married Alma Allsbrook, February 17, 1952 in South Carolina. They moved back to Minnesota in 1955 and resided in Brownsdale for 18 years, where he had been a sales representative and owned/operated a hardware and appliance store. They moved to Pennington in 1973 after his retirement because of health reasons. He enjoyed working with horses, classic cars, tractors and working in his garage. He loved fishing, going for drives and sightseeing. He was a past member of the Masonic Lodge in Brownsdale and a member of the Tenstrike Community Church.

He is survived by his wife Alma; sons Steven (Terri) Utley, North Pole, Ark., Benjamin (Kathy) Utley, Pennington, Jeffery Utley, Pennington; daughters Yvonne (Charles) Simmons, Pennington, Ronda (Neal) Emiliusen, Rochester, Charlene (Mike) Kemper, Fargo, N.D.; brother Ronald Utley, Calif.; sister Lois Detwiler, Austin; 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

His parents, sisters Evelyn Grant and Lorraine Utley, brother Marvin Utley, and grandson Michael Utley preceded him in death.

Service: 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at the Tenstrike Community Church, Tenstrike, with Pastor Steve Pomp officiating.

Reverend Joseph George Werner, Sr., 92, of Austin died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born and baptized in Battle Creek, Neb. He graduated from high school in Meadow Grove, Neb. He attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. for one year. After pursuing farming for several years he attend Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Ill., graduating with a Masters of Divinity degree.

He married Irma Tews on Sept. 20, 1942 in Battle Creek, Nebraska. He accepted a dual congregation in Decatur and Walthill, Neb., where he served for 43 years. After his retirement they moved to Austin where he was active for a time filling in for church services at various rural churches in the Austin area. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Austin.

Survivors include wife Irma, Austin; daughters Mary (Arlen) Schamber, Austin, Dorothy (Rev. Mark) Meschke, Collinsville, Ill.; sons Joseph Junior (Patricia), Commerce Township, Mich., David (Elizabeth), Hamburg; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, four sisters and one granddaughter.

Service: 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Walthill, Neb., with the Rev. Byron Tolzman and the Rev. Robert Stohlmann officiating.

Ronald Walter Youngmark, 60

1941-2002

Ronald Walter Youngmark, 60, died Monday, Oct 7, 2002, at his home.

Born December 29, 1941, in Van Nuys, Calif., he lived in Fallbrook for 28 years. He was the co-owner of Ron's Red Eye Saloon. He established the Fallbrook Taxi Co. and Fallbrook Transportation.

Mr. Youngmark was preceded in death by his father, Walter A. Youngmark, in 1969 and brother Arden D. Youngmark, in 1978.

He is survived by his mother, Ione Youngmark of Austin, Minn.; daughters and sons-in-law Margaret and Raul Rodas of Bloomington, Ill., and Ann and Randy Jusczak of Moose Lake, Minn.; brother and sister-in-law Richard and Ann Youngmark of Cleveland, Texas; sisters and brothers-in-law Pamela and Tim Wagner of Austin, Minn., Donna and David Becker of Houston, Minn., Linda Youngmark of Grimes, Iowa, and Peggy Youngmark of Minneapolis; grandchildren Corey and Sydney Rodas, and Caitlin, Alyssa and Adrianna Jusczak; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 9, 2002, at Grandview Cemetery, Austin, Minn.

A luncheon will be served following at Ramsey Golf Club.

Duane Richard Anderson, 72

1930-2002

Duane Richard Anderson, 72, of Austin, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester.

He was born Sept. 28, 1930, in Albert Lea, to Reuben Kalester and Olive "Mildred" (Thompson) Anderson. He graduated from Austin High School in 1948 and worked at Hormel Foods until November 1950. He served four years in the United States Air Force, three of those at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City as a chief gunner on a RB-36 flight crew.

On July 18, 1953, he married Sharon Lynne Schulz at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Faribault. They moved to Austin, where Duane worked for Hormel Foods. In 1963, he became a computer analyst where he worked until his retirement in December 1992.

He enjoyed family, golf, bowling, playing pool and cards and watching all sporting events. In his later years, he enjoyed watching the Animal Planet network and riding bicycle. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, VFW Post 1216, American Legion Post 91 and the Elks Club where he had served as Exalted Ruler and secretary.

Survivors include wife, Sharon Anderson, Austin; children, Terri Anderson, St. Paul; Vicki (Wayne) Krueger, Byron; Randy (Mary) Anderson, Bricelyn; Scott Anderson, Austin; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce Jones, Austin; brothers, Paul Anderson, San Diego, Calif.; David Anderson, San Lorenzo, Calif.; Charles (Joyce) Anderson and Richard (Jeanne) Anderson, all of Austin; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Arnold F. Barta, 64, of Medford Lakes, N.J., formerly of Austin, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in Mount Holly, N.J.

He was born September 19, 1938, in Austin, to Joseph and Anna (Svejkovsky) Barta. He graduated from the Austin area schools. He was a retired US Navy Commander and was most recently an engineer at Lockheed Martin Moorestown.

Survivors include cousins in the Austin area.

He was preceded in death by his brother and his parents.

Robert J. Bebee, 18, of Wasilla, Alaska, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Dec. 12, 2002.

He was born July 19, 1984, in Ft. Carson, Colorado, to David and Cynthia (Perkins) Bebee. He attended school in Austin until moving to Birchwood, Wis. in 1994. He attended school in Birchwood until May 2001 when he moved to Wasilla, Alaska to live with his father. He graduated from Burchell High School in Wasilla in May 2002. Bob loved to hunt and fish and was a creative welder.

Survivors include his parents, David and Virginia Bebee, Wasilla, Alaska; Cynthia and Rod Corbin of Birchwood, Wis.; brothers and sister-in-law, Joshua and Sarah Perkins, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Eric Bebee, Ft. Ray Carroll, 83, died suddenly at his home Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002.

He was born Oct. 16, 1919, in North Chicago, Ill., to Edward L. and Mary Katherine (Sheridan) Carroll. In 1943, he married Florence Stephens at St. Augustine Church. Ray retired from Hormel Foods in 1981. He was a member of the Knight of Columbus of Austin and the Eagles Club of Austin.

She was born Jan. 12, 1949, in Austin, to Donald and Elaine (Bailey) Ball. On Dec. 4, 1977, she married Timothy Cochlin in Austin.

Bernard Ray Olson

1965-2009

Bernard Ray Olson, 44, of Austin, died accidently while hunting on Dec. 24, 2009.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1965 in Austin to LaVerne “Odie” Olson and Betty (Holgate) Kruger. He was a graduate of Austin High School. Bernard worked for CRST International for 7 years, traveling the country as a semi truck driver. During his life he worked hard, taught himself a lot and took care of his mom and sisters. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. True to his personal style, he died doing something he enjoyed in the outdoors which he loved.

In his death, he has joined his recently deceased brother Danney by donating his body to the University of Minnesota's Anatomy Bequest Program to help educate future health care providers. His generosity extended beyond his life.

Bernard is survived by his mother, Betty Kruger of Austin; siblings, Verne (Norma) Olson of Dexter, Richard (Gail) Olson of Laurel, Montana, Ray Olson of Duluth, Linda Stigney of Stillwater, Sylvia Wagoner of Austin, Dona (Kirk) Johnson of Stillwater, Toy Sue Mehus of Austin; sister-in-law Stephanie Kruger of Austin; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father LaVerne and his brothers; Kenneth Olson and Danney Kruger.

A celebration of his life will be on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Ruby Rupner Auditorium in the Hormel Nature Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Clara (Nygard) Curran, 89

1913-2002

Clara Curran, 89, died Dec. 6, 2002, at St. Mark's Nursing Home, Austin.

She was born April 7, 1913, to Ole and Clara (Leider) Nygard near Dundas. Due to her father's premature death and her mother's persistent health problems, Clara and her siblings were placed in the state orphanage in Owatonna. Clara later lived with and worked for a family in St. Paul. On May 4, 1942, she married Frank Curran. Clara worked at Bethesda Hospital and lived in St. Paul until Frank's death in the early 1970s. Clara then moved to Austin to live with her sister, Florence Draheim. Shortly after Florence's death in 1996, Clara moved to St. Mark's Nursing Home. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, birds and animals.

Survivors include many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Mabel, Earl, Florence, Leo, Carl, Harry and Edward.

Service: 1 p.m. memorial service, Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at St. Mark's Nursing Home.

Danny Ray Davis, 44, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, in an auto accident west of Brownsdale.

He was born April 4, 1958, to Laurel William and Verna May (Hanners) Davis, in Austin. Danny was a farmer and an employee at Hormel Foods in Austin. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Brownsdale. He enjoyed chess and gardening.

Survivors include sisters, Julie Davis, Des Moines, Iowa; Lisa (Randal) Young, Ankeny, Iowa; niece and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three infant sisters.

Verna May Davis, 74, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, in an auto accident west of Brownsdale.

She was born Jan. 10, 1928, to Wilbur and Iva (Sackett) Hanners, in Dodge County, Minnesota. On Sept. 10, 1952, she married Laurel William Davis in Brownsdale. Laurel died Jan. 10, 1996. Verna was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Brownsdale. She also enjoyed reading and embroidery work.

Survivors include daughters, Julie Davis, Des Moines, Iowa; Lisa (Randal) Young, Ankeny, Iowa; two grandchildren.

Dorothy Marie DeBoer, age 73, of Lyle, Minnesota, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 4, 2002 at her home.

She was born Nov. 29, 1929, in Claremont, Minn. to Clifford and Esther (Thompson) Higgins. She attended school in Elkton and married Kenneth DeBoer on Aug. 9, 1948 in Spring Valley.

Dorothy was president of AAL Branch #5583 and a member of Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church where she belonged to Naomi Circle. She served on the Lyle School Board for 20 years and had been a Lyle City Council member for the past five years and treasurer of the Lyle EDA. Dorothy was a waitress at the Diamond Lunch Caf and Copper Kettle Caf and worked at the Lyle Liquor Store. She started working for the Post Office as a Post Office rural route carrier in 1968, transferred to the Rochester Mail Station, sorting mail and in 1980 became Postmaster in Lyle, retiring in 1996 after 30 years of service.

Dorothy was a loving mother and grandmother who will be sadly missed by her family, many friends and the community of Lyle.

Survivors include daughter, Cheryl (Ed) Cimino of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sons, Wayne DeBoer and Dwight (Diana) DeBoer, both of Lyle; grandchildren, Kris and Ryan Ekle, Dean DeBoer, Weston and Tyler DeBoer; sisters, Katie (Marvin) Pater of Lansing; Ethel Zalky of Ostrander; Nancy Durst of Rochester; Suzie (Terry) Donovan of Plymouth; brothers, Clifford (Becky) Higgins of Aitkin; Richard (Mary) Higgins of Bettendorf, Iowa; Jerry (Sandy) Higgins of Moline, Ill.; many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Casket bearers are Steve Johnson, Kris Ekle, Ryan Ekle, Dean DeBoer, Denny Whalen and Jeff Meyer. Honorary Casket bears are Weston and Tyler DeBoer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, rural Lyle with the Rev. Lydia Mittag officiating. Interment is at the church cemetery. Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and at the church one hour before the service at church. Worlein Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the church.

Henry L. Friedrich, 81

1921-2002

Henry L. Friedrich, 81, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center, Austin.

He was born Oct. 22, 1921, in North Dakota, to William and Olga (Klingfus) Friedrich. They moved to Minnesota, where Henry attended country school near Moscow. After completing his education, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps camp near Lanesboro. In 1942, he entered the United States Navy, serving in Panama, Brazil and the invasion of North Africa. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Austin, where he married Jean Skaran on Oct. 18, 1946. The couple made their home in Austin, where Henry worked for the Geo. A. Hormel Company until his retirement in August 1983.

He enjoyed working in his yard. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91. He entered the Comforcare Good Samaritan Center on Dec. 9, 2002.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Friedrich, Austin; son, Dan Friedrich, Austin; foster son, Tom Battin, Austin; brothers, Gus (Naomi) Friedrich and John (Genevieve) Friedrich, all of Austin; Albert (Alice) Friedrich, Williamsburg, Va.; William Friedrich, Austin; sisters, Caroline Lewis and Edna (Roger) Ludwig, all of Austin; sister-in-law, Rozella Friedrich, Ft. Collins, Colo.; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Fred Friedrich; and sisters, Laura Watson and Ida Norman.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the church today.

Service: 11 a.m., today, Dec. 23, 2002, at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Harold Deye officiating.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery with military honors by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91.

Robert Eugene Gehring, 76

1926-2002

Robert Eugene Gehring, 76, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at his home.

He was born Sept. 16, 1926, to Charles and Julian (Keller) Gehring in Iroquois, S.D. After attending school in Iroquois, he worked construction and on the railroad. Entering the US Army in 1945, he was stationed in Europe and Manilla serving in the Asiatic conflict before his discharge in 1946.

On July 20, 1952, he married Clariene "Clo" Dirks in Iroquois, S.D. They lived in Huron, S.D. where Robert drove truck for Nash Finch grocery stores for 19 years and then worked as a grocery store manager there for 19 years in many locations in the Midwest. Clariene died April 1, 1986.

On Nov. 22, 1986, he married Juanita Pieper in Austin. A former member of First United Methodist Church, Bobby enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, camping with his family, visiting casinos and bowling.

Survivors include wife, Juanita; daughters, Scharrel (Michael) Krause, Ham Lake; Linda (Steven) Wobschall, Austin; Sandra (Michael) Smith, Janesville, Wis.; sons, Randall (Ann) Gehring. Ottumwa, Iowa; Jeffrey Gehring (Tim Anderson), Golden Valley; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Dennis (Katie) Dirks, Bloomfield, Iowa; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death his parents; first wife; sisters, Florence Salter and Delores Koehler; brothers, Woodrow "Woody" and Clifford Gehring.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at the funeral home and Saturday at church for one hour before the service.

Service: 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Edward's Catholic Church with Father Joseph Fogal officiating.

Interment: Cedar City Cemetery, rural Austin, with military rites by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91.

Grant Elsmore Gullickson, 84

1918-2002

Grant Elsmore Gullickson, 84, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Austin Medical Center in Austin.

He was born Sept. 29, 1918, in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, to Henry and Amanda (Gunderson) Gullickson. He attended area schools, then served in the US Army during World War II and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1216.

On Nov. 11, 1945, he married Lorraine J. Anderson, at his sister's home near Ellendale.

Grant worked for many years at Borgesen Construction of Austin and at potato and onion warehouses in the Hollandale area. He grew vegetables on his acreage and enjoyed selling them at the Austin Farm to Market.

He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Austin.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Gullickson, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Gayle Gullickson, Austin; Glen and Cheryl Gullickson, Rochester; Daryl and Terese Gullickson, Austin; Vernell Gullickson, Austin; daughter, Joyce Gullickson, Austin; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice Underland, Owatonna; Grace Miller, Austin; Rosella Collier, Monroe, La.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 17, 2002, at the funeral home and Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with the Rev. Glenn L. Monson officiating.

Interment: Oakland Lutheran Cemetery near Oakland with Olaf B. Damm Post 1216 VFW and Austin Post #91 American Legion in charge of military rites.

Patricia A. "Patty" (Yost) Hassinger

1930-2002

Patricia A. "Patty" Hassinger, 72, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, December 19, 2002, at her home.

She was born Sept. 12, 1930, in Montevideo, Minnesota, to Charles and Janet (Bennett) Yost. On Oct. 30, 1948, she married Martin L. Hassinger. Patty worked at the Sheepe Shedde in Oliva for over 10 years. She moved to Minneapolis and continued to waitress at Nye's for 20 years until her retirement. She loved flowers, fishing and Vikings football. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren and trips to Northern Minnesota with Dinny.

Survivors include her children, Linda (Bruce) Hoegger, Corcoran; Marty (Ronda) Hassinger, Ramsey; Trudy Hassinger and Keith Lueck, Brownsdale; Pamela (Douglas) Hillemeier, Austin; Perry Hassinger and Marilyn Kropuenske, Detroit Lakes; seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother, Douglas Yost.

Visitation: One half hour before the service on Friday at the chapel.

Service: Noon memorial service Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Lakewood Cemetery Chapel in Minneapolis with Rev. James Mikkelson officiating.

Interment: Lakewood Cemetery.
