Bernice Irene (Kraft) Francis

1923-2009

Bernice Irene Francis, 86, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009 at Prairie Manor Care Center in Blooming Prairie.

She was born Oct. 26, 1923 in Elkton, Mower county, Minnesota, to Charles and Alma (Asper) Kraft.

Bernice graduated from high school at Elkton, Minnesota, and was married to Merwin "Merv" Francis on Oct. 12, 1941 at the St. John's Lutheran parsonage in Elkton. They lived in Austin where Bernice worked for Dr. Duane Wallaker as well as being a homemaker. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Bernice and Merv enjoyed many camping and fishing trips to northern Minnesota and playing cards with their friends. She also liked to play bingo and making an occasional trip to a casino. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Merwin "Merv" Francis in 2004 and her brother Raymond Kraft.

Bernice is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law: Bonnie and Lee Smith, Farmington, Minn., Nancy and Ron McAllister, Austin, Lori Schleusner, Maryville, Mo.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Cooper, Sartell, Minn.; brother and sisters-in-law: Vernon and Nyla Kraft, Pipestone, Minn., Bernice Kraft, Austin; nieces, nephews and Cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 28, 2009 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kristi Koppel officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. and for one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Organist will be Neal Erickson. Soloist will be Erin Schumacher.

Casket Bearers will be, Ronald Kraft, Darrell Kraft, Curtis Kraft, Scott Smith, Jared Smith and Ryan Schleusner.

Barbara Ann Crowe

1941-2009

Barbara Ann Crowe, age 68, of Austin, Minnesota, died at her home on Wednesday, December 23, 2009. She was born on September 15, 1941, in Charles City, Iowa, where she grew up and attended school. She married Edward T. Crowe on August 18, 1973, in Osage, Iowa. They made their home in Austin where they raised two children. Ed passed away on Oct. 31, 2009. Barb was a very loving person and will be dearly missed by her friends and family.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie Loesch of Rochester and Jean (Lydia) Adams of Fairmont; four grandchildren: Michael (Michelle) Farrell, Ashley Adams and Joshua (Brianna) Farrell, and Jaedan Harlow; five great grandchildren; sisters, Pam Crawford of the Twin Cities.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Edward.

There will be no services. Inurnment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery at a later date. Worlein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lucille Jane (nee Corbitt) Hanson

1914-2009

Lucille Jane Hanson, age 95 of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Thursday morning, Dec. 24, 2009, at the Adams Health Care Center in Adams, Minnesota.

She was born on August 31, 1914, in Austin to LeRoy and Nancy (Herrick) Corbitt. She began her schooling in a country school and then attended Elkton High School. After graduation, she attended Stout College for one year.

She married Leonard Hanson on June 27, 1934 in Osage, Iowa. They farmed in Marshall Township where they lived until 1962 when they moved to Austin. Leonard passed away in 1982. In July 1985 she married Hubert Hiemstra and he passed away in 1987.

Lucille was a member of Little Cedar Lutheran Church and active in WELCA, circle, and volunteered with Mower County Senior Citizens. She still actively did sewing, quilting and many crafts. She enjoyed gardening and working with animals.

She is survived by a son: Luvern (Judy) Hanson, Adams, Minnesota; three grandchildren: Mark (Brenda) Hanson, Craig (Julie) Hanson, and Kevin (Carie) Hanson; eight great-grandchildren: Jordon, Jacob, Cassandra, Kristina, Jon, Tyler, Erin and Jessie; sisters-in-law: Gladys Roy, Adams, Minnesota, Millie Hanson, Michigan; nieces and nephews; all of the family members of Hubert Hiemstra; and special friends, Mike and Jackie Oliver, of Traverse City, Michigan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leonard, and husband, Hubert.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at Little Cedar Lutheran Church, Adams, on Monday, December 28, with Rev. Jane Timmerman officiating. Visitation will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Monday at the church. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Kermit M. Olson

1916-2002

Kermit M. Olson, 86, formerly of Austin, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, in Las Vegas, Nev.

He was born April 14, 1916, to Ludwig and Henrietta (Friestad) Olson in Calmar, Iowa. The family later moved to Austin, where he attended and graduated from Austin High School in 1934. In 1939 he married Deolyn Berg in Iowa. He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad from 1946 to 1976. He was a very accomplished musician, starting his musical career in the 1930's. He played the drums for the Austin Municipal Marching Band, Austin Symphony Orchestra and the Eagle Drum and Bugle Corps. He played the piano with the Dixielander Dance Band, Henry Charles Dance Band and the Skipper Berg Viking Accordion Band.

Survivors include son Gary Olson, San Leandro, Calif.; daughters Tamara Turvold, Albert Lea, Karen Sullivan, Las Vegas, Nev.; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, grandson Duane Turvold, brother Harlan, sister Leola Corrigan and niece Jackie Hilmer.

Service: 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28 , 2002, at The Plaza Regency, 6021 W. Cheyenne, Las Vegas, Nev.

Allan Lewis Perau

1924-2002

Allan Lewis Perau, 78, of Austin, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

He was born June 25, 1924, in Otranto Township, Iowa, to Willie and Ella (Reimann) Perau. He graduated from Austin High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1948. He was an employee of the Hormel Food Corp., retiring after 37 years. On Dec. 12, 1952, he married Eunice (Madsen) Higgins. Al was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he was an usher. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling. He also enjoyed woodworking, practical jokes and spending time with family.

Survivors include wife, Eunice Perau, Austin; daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Chuck Draheim, Mankato; Connie and Charlie Larsen, Good Thunder; son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Suzin Higgins, Austin, Texas; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Lloyd Perau, Omaha, Neb.; nieces and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at the funeral home and Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 2 p.m., Wednesday, at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Natzke officiating. Casket bearers will be Daniel Draheim, Richard Draheim, Christopher Draheim, Candice Mohammad, Katherine Higgins, Sophia Fealy, Lisa Brazeau, Jeremy Larsen, Matthew Larsen and Shane Larsen.

Josephine A. Percival

1942-2002

Josephine (Jo Ann) Percival, of Austin, died Wednesday, September 4, 2002.

She was born Aug. 12, 1942, in Owatonna, the daughter of Donald and Oney Percival. She worked and lived in Rochester for many years. She remained working in Rochester, but returned to live in Austin three years ago. It was very important to her to be close to family.

Survivors include brothers, Jim (Colleen) Percival of Austin, John Percival of Austin, David (Mary Lou) Percival of St. Paul; sister, Linda (Doug) Braaten of Austin; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law, niece and great-nephew.

A private family memorial will be held.

Carl E. Peterson

1901-2002

Carl E. Peterson, 101, of Youngtown, Ariz., formerly of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, died Sept. 21, 2002.

He was born Aug. 19, 1901, in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, where he was a farmer until moving to Austin, where he farmed until 1965. He was married to his wife, Hjordis, for 69 years. In Arizona he was a charter member of American Lutheran Church, worked for the Dysart School System and owned his own lawn care business.

Survivors include his wife, Hjordis, Youngtown, Ariz; daughters, Ruth Faber, LeMars, Iowa; Connie Carey, Sun City, Ariz.; son, Ed Peterson, Estes Park, Colo.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Visitation: One hour before the service on Friday.

Melvin L. Schmeling

1915-2002

Melvin L. Schmeling, 86, of rural Waltham, died Friday, Sept., 20, 2002, at Prairie Manor Nursing Home, Blooming Prairie.

He was born Nov. 13, 1915, in Waltham, to William Schmeling and Selma Garbisch. He married Mildred Jukes on May 24, 1936, at St. Michaels Lutheran Church in rural Waltham. He was a lifelong resident of Waltham where he was a farmer. He belonged to St. Michaels Lutheran Church in rural Waltham.

Survivors include sons, Robert (Elaine) Schmeling, Blooming Prairie; Donald (Cheryl) Schmeling, Sumter, S.C.; daughter, Barbara (Donald) Eddy, Georgetown, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Glen Schmeling, Hayfield.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; son, Roger; three brothers; and one sister.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., today, Sept. 23, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church.

Service: 2 p.m., Tuesday, at St. Michaels Lutheran Church, rural Waltham, with the Rev. John Heruth officiating.

Lawrence Theodore Schewe

1912-2002

Lawrence Theodore Schewe, 90, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Sunday, on September 15, 2002, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born August 13, 1912, to Henry and Ora (Emory) Schewe in Twin Lakes. He attended Twin Lakes-Emmons country school. After marriage to Stella Pearl Nelson on November 20, 1934, in Northwood, Iowa, Lawrence farmed in the Twin Lakes area. The couple moved to the Albert Lea-Oakland area and continued to farm. After retirement they moved to Austin and opened a lawn service. Stella died Oct. 19, 1994. Lawrence moved into St. Mark's Lutheran Home in January 2000. He enjoyed playing cards, belonged to the Senior Citizen Center and attended worship at St. Mark's Chapel.

Survivors include children, Charlotte Lukes (Dean), Austin; Marlene Johnson-Hall (William Hall), Stewartville; Keith Schewe (Deanna), Glenville; L.D. Schewe (Betty), Austin; LaVonne Johnson, Camano Island, Wash.; Dennis Schewe (Geralyn), Austin; Rick Schewe (Cheryl), Austin; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Marvel Callahan, Twin Lakes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Karl DuWayne Shurson

1939-2002

Karl DuWayne Shurson, 62, of Mantorville, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

He was born Oct. 16, 1939, in Austin. He graduated from Austin High School in 1957. While in high school, he completed the Machine Shop program at Austin Area Vocational School. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy for three years. After returning, he worked at Usem's Chevrolet.

In 1962, he married Marlene Kay Magnuson of Blooming Prairie. He was then hired by IBM in Rochester. He held many manufacturing operation positions until his retirement as production facility manager in 1994. In 1994, he co-founded PEMSTAR Inc., was a member of the board of directors and executive vice president Quality and Corporate Project Office and helped in the creation of PEMSTAR Thailand Production Facility. He was also involved with the Kasson-Mantorville school board for 18 years, Rochester Chamber of Commerce, Ability Building Center board of directors, co-director Dodge County Care and Share and was active in school-to-work programs. He enjoyed spending time with family.

Survivors include wife, Marlene Shurson; son, Scott (Shelly) Shurson; daughters, Julie (Kevin) McAdams, Mantorville; Carrie Shurson, Kasson; four grandchildren; mother, Dorothy Felton, Austin; brother, Tommy Shurson, Austin; mother-in-law, Carrie Magnuson, Blooming Prairie.

He was preceded in death by his father, Steffen Shurson; step-father, Corlis Felton; brother, David Shurson; sister-in-law, Judy Shurson.

Violet "Vickie" (nee Waller) Simonson

1925-2002

Violet "Vickie" Deloris Simonson, 76, of Grand Meadow, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center, where she had lived since April.

She was born Dec. 5, 1925, to John and Bettsy (Knutson) Waller. She attended school in Austin. On May 9, 1947, she married Maynard Everett James Simonson at the Lutheran Parsonage in Grand Meadow. Vickie owned and operated the G.M. Cafe for four years and later cooked at Meadow Manor in Grand Meadow for seven and one-half years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, fishing, cooking, sewing and crafts.

Survivors include children, Lanna (Ronald) Gehling, Preston; Donnie Simonson, Grand Meadow; Jeanie (Dennis) King, Ostrander; Rhonda (Mike) Ptacek, Grand Meadow; Julie (Marty) Stier, Grand Meadow; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Julia (Dwight) Waldron, Austin; brothers-in-law, Ralph Christenson, Austin; Joe Monahan, Waseca; sister-in-law, Linda Waller, Austin.

Russell Martel Stromsodt

1919-2002

Russell Martel Stromsodt, 82, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sept. 21, 2002, at Prairie Manor in Blooming Prairie.

He was born December 9, 1919, in Charles City, Iowa, to Ingvald N. and Ida M. (Iverson) Stromsodt. He joined the Army in October 1941, serving during World War II. He was discharged in October 1945 as a Private First Class. Employed by Geo. A. Hormel & Company for 36 years, he retired on Oct. 25, 1975. He lived at the Cedars of Austin until June 28, 2002, when he moved to Prairie Manor Nursing Home in Blooming Prairie. He belonged to the Church of Christ, VFW, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.

Service: 11 a.m. graveside service, Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Grandview Cemetery with the Rev. David DeFor officiating. Military rites will be by American Legion Post 91.

Newman A. Tesdahl

1920-2002

Newman A. Tesdahl, 82, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at his home.

He was born July 5, 1920, in Clarion, Iowa, to John and Nellie (Shurson) Tesdahl. On April 22, 1940, he married Velma Loux. She died in 1974. He later married Myrtle Miller. Newman was a retired employee of Hormel Foods after 40 years of employment. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He enjoyed fishing, dancing and watching the Minnesota Twins.

Survivors include wife, Myrtle Tesdahl, Austin; sons, Robert and Dorothy Tesdahl, Marion, Iowa; Randy and Peg Tesdahl, St. Francis; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nine stepchildren, Don Miller, Austin; Gary and Terri Miller, Rockwell, Iowa; Bill and Lynn Miller, Austin; Diane and John LaRocco, Tacoma, Wash.; Debbie and Toby Adams, Portland, Ore.; John Miller, Mankato; David and Linda Miller, Austin; Steve Miller, Austin; Brad Miller, Austin; 17 step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; sister, Edith Sayers, Boulder, Colo.; sisters in-law, Peg Stuhr, Austin; Kathy and Dale Guttormson, Austin.

Vance Nordeen Torgerson

1918-2002

Vance Nordeen Torgerson, of Scottsdale, Ariz., passed away Sept. 19, 2002, during an extended hospitalization in Scottsdale.

He was born in Austin, Minn. on Oct. 6, 1918. During his high school years in Adams, he was a football quarterback, a baseball pitcher and a basketball forward. He attended St. Olaf College in Northfield for two years, starting in 1936, before transferring to the University of Minnesota for his final two years, where he earned a bachelor of business administration degree in 1940. He served in the Army during World War II. He was associated with the Farmers State Bank in Adams, Minn., for 43 years in the positions of assistant cashier, cashier, vice president, president and chairman of the board. He "wintered" in Lakeland, Fla. for 10 years after retiring from the bank and before moving to Scottsdale in 2000.

He served on the Southland School District Board of Education, as a trustee of St. Olaf Hospital in Austin, Minn. and as treasurer of the Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams, Minn., where he was baptized, confirmed and married. He was also a founding director of the Cedar River Country Club in Adams, a Boy Scout leader in Adams, a Lions Club member in Adams and a mayor of Adams. He enjoyed boating, fishing and water skiing with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of more than 56 years, Muriel (Sass); sons, Dr. Stuart A. Torgerson, Springfield, Ill.; Dr. Brian C. Torgerson, Sanford, N.C.; and James D. Torgerson, lawyer and business owner, Scottsdale, Ariz.; sister, Dorothy T. Smith of Queensbury, N.Y.; brother, Roy Torgerson of Adams, Minn.; and six greatly loved grandchildren.

Services and burial will be Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at 1:30 p.m., at Little Cedar Lutheran Church and Cemetery, in Adams, with the congregational pastor Rev. Sherry Mason, nephew Rev. David Smith of Metropolis, Ill., and friend Rev. Dr. Meg Madson of Plymouth, Minn., officiating. Scottsdale services were held at Desert Foothills Lutheran Church, Scottsdale, on Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, with the Rev. Michael Schmidt officiating. The family asks that memorials from the area be made to the Little Cedar Lutheran Church, Adams, MN 55909. Arrangements by the Adams Funeral Home and by Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Friends may call at the Adams Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and at the church for one hour before the service on Friday.

Interment will be at the Little Cedar Lutheran cemetery with Adams Post #146 in charge of military rites.

Bette Jane (Lee) Ulland

1940-2002

Bette Jane Ulland, age 61, of Superior, Wisconsin, died Sept. 19, 2002, in Temecula, Calif. She was born Oct. 11, 1940, in Austin, Minn., to Truman R. and Evelyn (Schnorenberg) Lee. She was raised in Austin and graduated from Austin High School. On July 8, 1959, Bette was united in marriage to Robert O. Ulland at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church, also in Austin. They were residents of Cloquet, Minn. from 1965 to 1994; they had lived in Superior, Wis. since 1994.

Bette was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet, the Duluth Women's Club, the Cloquet Women's Friday Club and P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter E, of Superior. She was also a volunteer for Cloquet pre-school screening and vision and hearing testing, and a volunteer as a buyer for the Cloquet Community Hospital Gift Shop. In 1982 and 1983, Bette and her family hosted Mariolanda van der Heijden through the A.F.S. Program in Cloquet. Bette's family was always the most important thing in her life.

Her mother preceded Bette in death. She is survived by her husband, Robert Ulland; and five daughters, Renee Zavala of San Diego, Calif.; Lisa (Daniel) Squires of Gheen, Minn.; Kari Ulland of Eagan, Minn.; Kim Ulland of Benson, Minn.; and Jana (Joel) Hossli of Aurora, Ill. She is also survived by her father, Truman R. Lee of Blue Ridge, Ga.; her step-father, Walter D. Butler of Albert Lea, Minn.; one sister, Jody (David) Nechanicky of Albert Lea, Minn.; four grandchildren, Adriana and Giovanna Zavala, and Noah and Isaiah Squires; and a special daughter, A.F.S. student Mariolanda van der Heijden of the Netherlands.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. Margery M. (McMartin) Uschold

1916-2002

Margery M. Uschold, age 85, of Mesa, Arizona, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, September 3, 2002, at the Citadel Care Center in Mesa.

She was born December 5, 1916 in Claremont, the daughter of William and Ella (Springsted) McMartin. She attended high school in Claremont and she received her nurses training in Owatonna. She married Henry Uschold June 4, 1947 in Austin. They lived in Austin from 1947 until 1962. They then moved to Lake City, where they operated the Hilldale Motel until 1969. They then moved to Wabasha where she worked for the Community Clinic. She retired in 1980.

In 1996, she moved to Greenfieid Assisted Living in Mesa where she could be near her daughter. She was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church, Wabasha. She did volunteer work for SEMCAC and other Wabasha County organizations.

Survivors include son John Uschold, North Branch; daughter Linda (Ron) Calhoon, Gilbert, Ariz.; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brother Erland McMartin, Claremont; sister Lorna (Mynard) Grunklee, Brookings, Ore.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and three grandchildren.

Visitation: One hour before the service.

Service: 11 a.m., Saturday, September 7, 2002, at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha with the Reverend Donald Lovas officiating.

Interment: St. Felix Cemetery, Wabasha.

1926-2002

Gordon M. Wolff, 75, of Adams, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, in Rose Creek.

He was born Sept. 24, 1926, in Mitchell County, Iowa, to Morse and Katie (Smalley) Wolff. On Jan. 31, 1950, he married Delores Hofland in Rose Creek. Gordon was a farmer near Adams.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Sally Wolff, Hibbing; Ronald and Kathie Wolff, Minnetonka; Bradley and Theresa Wolff, Grand Meadow; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Roland Stoll, Mankato; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife on Aug. 9, 1992.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.

1940-2002

Jacquelin B. "Jackie" Wood, 62, of Batavia, Illinois, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at her home.

She was born August 4, 1940, in Mankato, Minnesota, to Henry and Viola Grundmeier. She moved to Austin and graduated from Austin High School. She loved to cook and do cross stitching.

Survivors include son, Robert Wood; daughter-in-law, Kim Wood; two grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Loren (Patricia) Hyland; father-in-law, Willard Wood; nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and an infant son.

Robert Busse Wright, M.D.

Robert Busse Wright, M.D., died Sept. 15, 2002, in Twin Falls, Idaho, in a tragic plane accident.

Beloved husband of Jill Antonia Wright and loving father of Elizabeth Mary Mihatov and husband William, and Captain Stuart Busse Wright, U.S. Army and wife, Cari.

He is the son of Ruth Wright and the late Robert R. Wright, M.D.

He is also survived by his brother Douglas Wright and wife Lori, and sister Barbara Christie and her husband Robert, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Dr. Wright was born in Watertown, Wis., raised in Austin, Minn., and was a 27-year resident of Sacramento, aged 60 years.

Friends are welcome to attend a Memorial Service on Thursday (tomorrow) at 2 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1701 L Street, Sacramento, Calif.

1970-2002

Tammy Sue Radtke, 32, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at her home.

She was born March 15, 1970, in Austin, to William and Darlene (Miller) Bos. She graduated from Austin High School in 1988 and was employed at Margaritaville in Austin.

On Jan. 11, 2001, she married Jim Radtke in Austin. Tammy was a member of Crane Community Chapel and enjoyed collecting angels, playing darts, bingo and spending time with her family, friends and cats.

Survivors include husband, James Radtke, Austin; mother, Darlene Bos, Austin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Barb Bos, Austin; Jeff and Michelle Bos, Austin; Tim Bos, Austin; sister, Susan Bos, Minneapolis; mother-in-law, Ruth Radtke, Owatonna; father-in-law, Rueben Radtke, Owatonna; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jackie and Kim Crawford, Lyle; Calvin Radtke, Red Wing; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Helen Murtle (Westholm) Young

1918-2002

Helen Murtle Young, 84, of Grand Meadow, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Grand Meadow Health Care Center, Grand Meadow.

She was born Sept. 20, 1918, in Sauk Rapids, to Emil Westholm and Bertha (Jackson) Westholm. She grew up in Two Harbors and raised champion sheep in 4-H as a youth with her family. She married Meryl Young in 1945 and moved to a farm in rural Adams. They later divorced. Helen then moved to LeRoy where she lived for 20 years. She sold McNess products in Mower County for 30 years before retiring and moving to the Twin Towers, Austin in 1990. She lived there until she entered the Grand Meadow Health Care Center in November 1999.

Survivors include daughter, Naomi (Gaylord) Stuckey, Grand Meadow; sons, Paul (Susie) Young, Lakewood, Colo.; Daniel (Rachel) Young, LeRoy; David (Valerie) Rabine-Young, Austin; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter, and three sisters.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at the funeral home and Saturday at the Meadows Chapel for one hour before the service.

Elsie Bertha (Abeld) Daleske

1919-2002

Elsie Bertha Daleske, 83, of Dexter, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Fieldcrest Nursing Home, Hayfield.

She was born March 29, 1919, to Henry and Lena (Puschert) Abeld in Dexter. She attended school in Dexter and Elkton and was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Elkton, where she was a lifelong member.

On June 4, 1939, she married Fred Daleske at St. John's Lutheran Church. After Fred's death on April 5, 1949, Elsie continued to operate the family farm in Dexter Township with her sons and parents until 1973, when Elsie and her mother sold the farm and moved to Austin. Elsie worked in Rochester at Libby's and later at Raymond's Nursing Home (Burr Oak Manor) in Austin until July 1981.

On July 25, 1981, she married Otto Daleske of Ceylon. They moved to the Cedars of Austin in 1996; Otto died Sept. 15, 1997. Elsie belonged to ladies aid at church and enjoyed crocheting afghans for her family.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Herbert and Carol Daleske, Hayfield; Robert and Lyla Daleske, Somonauk, Ill.; step-daughters, Lucille (Martin) Rettig, Alexandria; Mary (James) Klopp, Glencoe; step-son, Karl (Delores) Daleske, Ceylon; six grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 20 step-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Abeld, Crookston; Frieda Mailand, Spring Valley; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred; husband, Otto; brother, Richard; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Oswald William Asper

1914-2002

Oswald William Asper, 88, of Deer River died Sunday, October 27, 2002 at Deer River Health Care Center.

He was born April 16, 1914 in Austin, Minn., to Bennie and Mattie (Rogers) Asper. He attend school in the Adams, Minn. area and went to work for the Hormel Foods Corp. in July of 1936. He was married to Bernice Rogers on January 21, 1939 at Austin. During World War II he served in the US Coast Guard. He returned to Austin and worked at the Hormel Company until retiring on September 30, 1976.

He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, DAV, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Moose Club. He enjoyed woodworking and hunting, but was an avid Muskie fisherman.

Following his wife's death, he moved to St. Cloud in 1984 and to Deer River in 2001.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice, brothers Bernard and Art Asper and Sisters Ruth MacNamara and Alice Krokus.

Funeral services will be held Thursday October 31, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with The Rev. Don Deines officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, with Austin Post #91 American Legion and Olaf B. Damm Post 1216 VFW in charge of military rites. Visitation will be held at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday at the church for one hour before the service. Casket bearers will be Scott Merten, Dr. Chuck Thompson, Adrian Sequin, Randy Kuechle, Chad Meinert, Jay Asper, David Vos and Paul Kieffer.

Jennie Beise

1907-2002

Jennie Beise, 95, of Stewartville died Sunday October 27, 2002, at Stewartville Care Center.

She was born August 12, 1907, in rural Grundy Center, Iowa.

She grew up on the family farm in Pleasant Valley Township, Mower county, Minnesota, and attended school in Racine. She worked as a nanny for the Dr. Waltman Walters family in Rochester until her marriage.

On October 12, 1933, she married Arthur Beise at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plesant Valley Township. The couple farmed in Plesant Valley Township until moving to Stewartville in 1965. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a sunday school teacher. She was also a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville, it's womens society and the Stewartville Senior Citizens. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, gardening and was an avid reader.

Survivors include daughter Arlyss Beise, Stewartville; brothers Elwin Ottjes, rural Grand Meadow, Ernest (Marion) Ottjes, rural Stewartville; sister Edna Holland, Austin; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, a daughter, five sisters and a brother.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m., today, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Service: 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville with the Rev. Lyle Fritsch and the Rev. Dr. David Preuss officiating.

Interment: Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Pleasant Valley Township.

Bruce R. Andrews

1916-2002

Bruce Robert Andrews, 85, of Austin, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002.

He was born Dec. 21, 1916, to William and Hattie (Hurd) Andrews in Blue Earth, Minn.

He attended school in Blue Earth and grew up on the farm where he was the younger of 13 children.

On Oct. 1, 1938, he married Evelyn Irene Severtson in Sioux Falls, S.D. They were married for 62 wonderful years. Evelyn died on April 7, 2000.

Mr. Andrews belonged to St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He was employed by Geo. A. Hormel & Co. and also ran the bonded gas station in Austin. Later he worked for Lysne Construction. Bruce enjoyed working outdoors, feeding the animals and also playing bingo and spending time with his family -- a five generation family.

Dad/Grandpa had a good story to tell and a smile for everyone. He loved playing his harmonica and enjoyed cars -- especially his red convertible he had long ago.

Survivors include five daughters, all from Austin: Patricia Andrews, Sandy (John) Carroll, Bonnie (Dean) Britt, Cheryl (Jim) Epley, Sheila (Robert) Helmers; eight grandchildren: Terri (Brian) Cambern, Julie (Michael) Diaz, Steven Carroll (Renae), John Karnes Jr., Sheri Day (Juan), Angela (Gentry) Black, Valerie Helmers, Shelly Epley; 11 great-grandchildren: Corey and Jennifer Cambern, Liah and Jamie Day, Chelsea and Travis Hatfield, Dakota Ferch, Justas Martin, Levi Black, Timmy Carroll, Alexcis Escandon; one great-great-grandson: Dylan Ricken; one sister, Bernice Thorton of Minneapolis; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn; five infant children, five brothers and six sisters.

Pallbearers are Brian Cambern, Corey Cambern, Steven Carroll, Terry Day, Gentry Black and Michael Diaz.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday (today) at Worlein Funeral Home and at the church for one hour before the service on Wednesday.

Ione V. Rud, 73, formerly of Austin, died Sunday, October 27, 2002, at the Sauer Memorial Nursing Home in Winona.

She was born February 2, 1929 in Decorah, Iowa to Arthur and Louise (Barth) Kraby. On September 3,1948 she married Junior Burdette Rud in Austin. She owned and operated Star Liquor from January 1, 1980 to 1996.

Survivors include sons Rodney (Cindy) Rud, Faribault, Randall (Faith) Rud, Winona, Russell Rud, Austin; daughter Rhonda (Dean) Graner, Kellogg; fourteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister Mae Gieske, Austin; brother DuWayne (Betty) Kraby, The Villages, Fla.; brother-in-law Albert Diggins, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Robert Kraby and sister Arlene Diggins.

Hazel J. Dodds, 91, of Austin, died Thursday, October 24, 2002, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

She was born November 3, 1910 in Story City, Iowa, to Joe and Hannah (Cherland) Chelsvig. On November 4, 1933, she married John A. Dodds in Osage, Iowa. Hazel was a homemaker and mother. She enjoyed fishing, bowling, gardening and crocheting, playing cards at the Senior Center and her grandchildren.

Survivors include sons, Ronald and Patricia Dodds, Frazee; Donald Dodds, El Paso, Texas; daughters, Carole Granholm, Austin; Sharon Hatten, Brownsdale; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; sister, Nettie Haugen, McCallsburg, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband; grandson, Michael; three brothers and three sisters.

Bernice M. Glassel, 90, of Austin, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 3, 1912, in Austin, to Enoch and Bell (Holms) Hall. She married Joseph Glassel and was a homemaker.

Betty Mae Johnson, 83, of Largo, Fla., formerly of Austin, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at the Largo Medical Center, Largo, Florida.

She was born July 4, 1919, to Emil and Grace (Strange) Hanson in Chatfield, where she attended school. She worked for Burr Oak Manor for 10 years and for J.C. Penney. She was an avid Twins fan, enjoyed sports in general, reading, grandchildren, her cats, card games and gardening.

Marie E. (nee Skifton)
(Feil) Tomhave

1918-2002

Marie Ellen Skifton-Feil-Tomhave, age 84, of Austin, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 17, 1918, in Caledonia, Minn., to Magnus and Annabelle (Lutz) Skifton. She attended school and was married to Norman Feil on March 8, 1938, in Caledonia, Minn. Following Norman's death Marie worked as a waitress in a number of area restaurants, was employed at the Weyerhauser Co and Regner's Dry Cleaners. She was married to John Tomhave on April 22, 1972, in Austin.

Marie was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Austin and the St. Olaf Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed flowers, embroidery, shopping, doll collecting and spending time with her family. Marie was a dedicated and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Norman Feil and John Tomhave; grandsons, Thomas Burgess and Eric Roberts; three brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church (WELS) 2103 Eighth Street SW, Austin with the Rev. Bob Seifert officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be held at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church for one hour before the service on Saturday.

Glenn Wilbur Shawback

1919-2002

Glenn Wilbur Shawback, age 83, of Waltham, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 15, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Preston, Minn. He was born March 13, 1919, in Waltham, Minn., the son of Arthur and Clara (Foster) Shawback. He attended school in Waltham and completed further mechanical training in Brownsdale.

He worked on the family farm in Waltham and in trucking and mechanical occupations before enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps in 1942. He trained in Texas at Pampa Army Airfield in aircraft maintenance and operations, supervising 300 ground crewmen. Glenn served six months in the Asian Pacific Theatre flying between India and China. He separated from the Air Corps as a Master Sergeant and was awarded the Theatre service, Victory, and Good Conduct medals.

On Nov. 10, 1946, Glenn was united in marriage to Lillian Marie Waldo in Glenville, Minn. They made their home in Waltham where Glenn established the Shawback Garage, providing automobile sales and repair for 50 years at the same location. He also farmed the family property and his own property until 1996. Lillian died on Nov. 8, 1990. He was remarried on Aug. 24, 1991, in Rochester to Nancy Craig and later divorced. Glenn was a member of the Hayfield American Legion Post for 55 years. He entered the Good Samaritan Center in Preston in May of 2002.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathryn (Jerry) McBrearty of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; two grandchildren, Jerry, Jr. and Elizabeth McBrearty; two brothers, Harry Shawback of Seattle, Wash. and Donald (Mary Ann) Shawback of Lewisburg, Pa.; three sisters, Donna Cameron of rural Waltham, Ilene (Reginald) Santos of Brazil and Ellen (Jim) Gibson of Melbourne, Fla.; and many other relatives and friends.

His parents; a brother, Milton Shawback; and a sister, Wilma Shawback, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Waltham with Rev John Heruth officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military honors by the Hayfield American Legion Post. There will be no visitation or reviewal. The Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is handling arrangements for the family.

Stella (Eckert) Wambeam

1914-2002

#1:

Stella Wambeam, 88, of Austin, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at the Prairie Manor Nursing Home, Blooming Prairie.

She was born Aug. 31, 1914, to Ross and Effie (Tummore) Eckert near Otranto, Iowa. On Oct. 8, 1932, she married Russell L. Wambeam. The couple farmed in Iowa until moving to Austin in 1940. They eventually bought a farm near Austin. They had four children.

Stella became a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in 1951. She belonged to a neighborhood group, a project group and made ceramics.

Russell died in 1991 after 59 years of marriage. Stella then moved into Austin where she lived until November of 2000 when she moved to Prairie Manor in Blooming Prairie.

She loved cooking, baking, canning and crocheting.

Survivors include children, Dr. Russell (Margaret) Wambeam, Jr., Laramie, Wyo.; Rodger (Judy) Wambeam, Austin; Alcienne (Charles) Madison, Maple Grove; Dellene (Steve) Schwart, Austin; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Lillian Johnson, St. Ansgar, Iowa; brother, Jason Eckert, Sr., Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell; brothers, Clarence, Shirley and Bill; sisters, Valyda and Ruth.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roberta Flood officiating.

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA -- The funeral for Stella Wambeam will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, with the Rev. Roberta Flood officiating. Burial will be in Woodbury Cemetery in rural Lyle.

Mrs. Wambeam, 88, of Austin, died Tuesday morning (Oct. 22, 2002) at Prairie Manor Nursing Home in Blooming Prairie, where she had lived since November 2000.

Stella Eckert was born Aug. 31, 1914, on a farm near Otranto, Mitchell County, Iowa. On Oct. 8, 1932, she married Russell L. Wambeam. They farmed in Iowa until moving to Austin in 1940. Her husband worked for Hormel Foods Corp. and they also farmed in rural Austin. She moved into Austin after her husband's death in 1991. Mrs. Wambeam had been a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church since 1951. She enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, crocheting and ceramics.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. Russell Jr. (Margaret) of Laramie, Wyo., and Rodger (Judy) of Austin; two daughters, Alcienne (Charles) Madison of Maple Grove, Minn., and Dellene (Steve) Schwartz of Austin; 12 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a sister, Lillian Johnson of St. Ansgar, Iowa; and a brother, Jason Eckert Sr. of Austin. Three brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and an hour before the service Saturday at the church.

Peggy J. (Ferguson) Hauer

1927-2002

Peggy J. Hauer, age 75, of Austin, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, of a lingering illness at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

She was born Sept. 21, 1927, in Austin, Minn. to Bert and Winifred (Klock) Ferguson.

She married Harold Hauer on May 1, 1948, in Austin.

Peggy was a member of the National Humane Society and Church of The Open Bible in Austin. She was active in her church and was a past president of the Women's Auxiliary,

She loved to bake bread and sew patchwork quilts to share with her family and many friends. She was a lifetime dog fancier, who supported animal shelters and enjoyed the company of her own dog BB.

Peggy will be missed by her friends and family, especially by her grandson, Victor Alwes.

Memorials are preferred to the Church of The Open Bible or the Mower County Humane Society.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at Church of the Open Bible with Pastor Mike Juntunen officiating. Interment will be in the Enterprise Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be held at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday one hour before the service.

Organist will be Ruth Sweetser. Honorary bearers will be Rick Ferguson and Richard Loomis. Casket bearers will be Dwight Ferguson, Michael Ferguson, Terry Ferguson, Bradley Heilman, Victor Vaughn Alwes and Greg Howden.

She is survived by: daughters and sons-in-law: Bette Jo and Bradley Heilman of Mankato, Minn.; Glenda and Richard Loomis of Sunrise, Fla.; grandson: Victor Vaughn Alwes of Fresno, Calif.; brother: Bert M. Ferguson of Austin, Minn.; sister: Gladys Howden of Austin, Minn.; nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold in 1996; three sisters and four brothers.

Eula Norma (Dvorak) Dennis

1920-2002

Eula Norma Dennis, 81, of rural Austin, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at her home.

She was born Dec. 16, 1920, in Oakland Township, to Joseph F. and Golda Mae (Kirkpatrick) Dvorak. She attended school in Lyle, graduating in 1939. On June 1, 1940, she married Stanley M. Dennis at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived in the Austin area until 1949, when they moved to a farm in rural Udolpho Township. Eula was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and Marion Circle. She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, quilting and spending time with her family.

Survivors include husband, Stanley Dennis, rural Austin; children, Eugene (Donna) Dennis, Austin; Everett (LaVonne) Dennis, New Port Richey, Fla.; Janice Dennis, Austin; Dixie (Dale) Burtch, Onawa, Iowa; Daryl (Connie) Dennis, Redmond, Wash.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; relatives and friends. Her parents preceded her in death.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at the funeral home and Thursday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 1:30 p.m., Thursday, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Andrew M. Lindahl officiating. Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Katherine (Bergstrom) Schlottman

1926-2002

Katherine Schlottman, of Los Angeles, Calif., and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Oct. 6, 2002, at her home.

She was born Dec. 26, 1926, in Miller, S.D., to Agnes and John Bergstrom. The family moved to Austin where she graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1944. She attended the University of Minnesota where she received a degree in Speech Pathology. In 1954 she received her master's degree from the State University of Iowa. After moving to California she was employed with Crippled Children's Society of Southern California. She married Richard Schlottman in 1957. In 1980, she earned her doctorate degree from the University of Southern California. She served as associate director and subsequently vice president of Crippled Children's Society, retiring after 18 years of service.

Survivors include husband, Richard; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Steve Schoch, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Carol Schlottman, Louisiana; five grandsons; brother, Norbert Bergstrom, Austin; sisters, Mary Bissen, Austin; Margaret Fingarson, St. Cloud; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Service: Was Oct. 10, 2002, at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Los Angeles, Calif.
