Charles LeRoy "Chuck" DeVriendt 1934-2002
Charles LeRoy "Chuck" DeVriendt, 67, of Waltham, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at his home.
He was born, Oct. 6, 1934, to Mell and Edna (Maile) DeVriendt in Dodge County. He attended local schools and served in the United States Army for three years. He had been employed with Waltham Plumbing and Heating for 35 years. He was a member of the Hayfield American Legion.
Survivors include sisters, Joyce (Gerald) Juhnke, Blooming Prairie; Donna Stoelk, Austin; nieces and nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Francis DeVriendt; sister, Mabel Stelter; and brothers-in-law, Floyd Stelter and Orville Stoelk.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 30, 2002, and one hour before the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home with Father Richard Dernek officiating.
Interment: Fairview Cemetery, Hayfield with military honors by the Hayfield American Legion Rothie Post #330.

Rayburn Dillon Earl 1915-2000
Rayburn Dillon Earl, 86, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home, Austin.
He was born Dec. 20, 1915, in Mower County to Casper and Lillie (Lerum) Earl.
He graduated from Austin High School in 1934. He served in the Pacific from 1941 to 1945 during World War II.
He worked at Hormel from 1934 to 1973. He retired in 1973 and moved to Mille Lac Lake where he enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was an avid golfer and bowler. He also enjoyed playing cribbage at the Senior Center where he was a member.
Survivors include daughters, Dee Ann Earl, Austin; Susan and John Murphy, Austin; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Anna Arett, Austin; Grace Lafferty, St. Ansgar; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.
Service: 1 p.m. memorial service, Friday, April 26, 2002, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin with the Rev. Jim Peck officiating.

Charlene F. (Huff) Enerson 1929-2002
Charlene F. Enerson, 72, of Austin, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Austin
Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 10, 1929, in Bristow, Iowa, to Charles M. and Carma M.
(Fahr) Huff. The family moved to Lyle where Char graduated from high
school.
After her marriage to Duane Enerson on June 1, 1947, in Lyle, they farmed
in the Rose Creek and Lyle area. Char worked at many local grocery stores
as a cashier. In 1977, the couple purchased the White Pines Resort in
Bemidji which they operated until 1985 when they retired. They moved back
to Austin in 1997.
A lifetime member of Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, Lyle Auxiliary and Women of the Moose, Char also enjoyed bowling, reading, playing bingo and crafts.
Survivors include husband, Duane Enerson, Austin; daughters, Sherry (Neal) Kenyon, Lyle; Kathy (Dale) Whalen, Rochester; son, Kevin (Jolene) Enerson, Bemidji; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Roger (Iona) Huff, Helena, Mont.; Ward (Joan) Huff, Caledonia; Oscar (Carol) Huff, Austin; sisters-in-law, Shirley Huff, Kasson; Lois Prihoda, Albert Lea; relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Wendell Huff; and infant sister, Janet.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, April 19, 2002, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Norman Raymond Fasbender 1949-2002
Norman Raymond Fasbender, 53, of rural Hayfield, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at his home.
He was born March 20, 1949, in Adams, to Vincent and Florence (Gerber) Fasbender. He attended schools in the Adams area.
On Sept. 27, 1969, he married Pat Manning in Litchfield.
Norman was employed by Marigold Foods in Rochester for many years, worked for A.G. Strobel and also drove truck.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hayfield.
Survivors include wife, Pat Fasbender, Hayfield; sons, Scott and Dr. Kyja Fasbender, Elk Mound, Wis.; Tim (Alison Smith) Fasbender, Menomonie Wis.; daughters, Mary Jo and Shawn Smith, Rochester; Tracy Fasbender, Hayfield; five grandchildren; mother, Florence Fasbender, Taopi; sisters, Patty and Rich Koenigs, Stewartville; Nancy and Derlen Oldenberg, Rochester; Jane and Scott Anderson, Adams; brothers, Allen and Deb Fasbender, Adams; Don and Karen Fasbender, Adams; Mark Fasbender, Adams.

Anna (Cramer) Griese1909-2002
Anna Griese, 93, of Austin, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at St. Marks
Lutheran Home.
She was born March 22, 1909, in Dows, Iowa, to Charles and Pauline
(Christopherson) Cramer. She graduated from Belmond, Iowa High School
on May 29, 1929. She worked as a housekeeper, a cook at the Chandell
Drive-In and Bob's Drive-In and, for 23 years, worked as a nursing assistant
at Raymonds/Burr Oak Manor Nursing Home. She retired at age 74. She enjoyed
going on trips with friends, putting puzzles together, playing aggravation
and weekend visits to Rochester. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran
Church.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Laurabel "Lou" and William Tasler, Stewartville; Judith and Franklin Goertz, Rochester; Janice and Roger Jorgenson, Austin; Patricia and James Crofoot, Oronoco; sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Griese, Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.; Harlan "Butch" and Mary Jo Griese, Austin; 25 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brother, Wallace Cramer, Belmond, Iowa; sister, Lucille Cramer, Belmond, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by sons, James and Arlo; three great-grandsons; a daughter-in-law; four sisters.

Milton Griffel, 821919-2002
Milton Fred Griffel, age 82, of Grand Meadow, died Saturday April 13, 2002, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester.
He was born June 30, 1919, to Fred and Louise Griffel in Newell, Iowa. He
was baptized in the Lutheran faith and later joined the Methodist Church. At
14, his father died and the family moved to Illinois. When they moved back,
Milton started farming the land where he was born. On Dec. 25, 1942, he
married Vivian Seemann at her home near Grand Meadow. They returned to
Milton's home and farmed with his family. They later moved to Ellsworth,
Iowa and farmed. In 1950, they moved to the Grand Meadow area and bought
the farm that Vivian grew up on. They farmed there until retiring in 1983.
Milton was a member of the Grand Meadow United Church and held offices on
the church board and mens club. He was also a member of the Mower County
Farm Bureau and held offices in the bureau. He enjoyed farming and his
family.
Survivors include wife, Vivian, Grand Meadow; daughter, Carol (Wayne) Gehling, Grand Meadow; four grandchildren; sister, Alice Buhr, Momence, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sherilyn Kried; and one brother.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
Service: 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the United Church of Grand Meadow with the Rev. Greg Strunk officiating.

Alice A. Heller 1921-2002
Alice A. Heller, 81, of Austin died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at Prairie
Manor Nursing Home in Rochester.
She was born in Westgate, Iowa, on February 23, 1921 to Chris and Lydia
(Kressin) Heller. She was never married and lived most of her life in
Austin where she worked at Hormel Foods Corporation for over 40 years. She
was a member of St. John's Lutheran church and a charter member of the Red
Womens Chapter of the Isaac Walton League.
She is survived by sister Rosella Marienau, Austin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and six sisters.
Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2000 at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church.
Service: 1 p.m., Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Natzke officiating.
Interment: Grandview Cemetery.

Benjamin J. Holgate Jr. 1921-2002
Benjamin J. Holgate Jr., 80, of Austin, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Albert Lea.
He was born Dec. 26, 1921, to Benjamin and Mary (Tracy) Holgate in Austin.
On Aug. 19, 1950, he married Shirley Schumacher in Austin. Ben served in
the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. He was a retired employee of
Hormel Foods.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Linda Holgate, Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and David Lokker, Austin; sister, Joyce Hannaman, Galena, Ill.; brother-in-law, LeRoy Wollschlager, Austin; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Holgate; brother, Vern Holgate; sister, Emma Westmoreland.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2002, with a 6 p.m. wake service and from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Phyllis (Anderson) House 1932-2002
Phyllis Mae House, 69, of Austin, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at her home.
She was born July 19, 1932, to Elmer and Amellia (Tonding) Anderson in
Austin.
A lifetime member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, she was baptized and
confirmed there and on Aug. 19, 1950, married Francis House.
A retired dietary supervisor at Burr Oak Manor, Phyllis was also manager
of Wendy's and a homemaker.
Her activities included bowling and being secretary of bowling leagues
for many years, playing cards, traveling and she enjoyed crossword puzzles.
Survivors include husband, Francis House, Austin; sons and
daughters-in-law, Stephen and Cecelia House, New Brighton; Michael and Mary
House, Rochester; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Paul Meany, Austin;
six grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Delmer and Mary Anderson,
Austin; sister and brother-in-law, LaVonne and Richard Zrucky, Byron;
step sister-in-law, Ann Dixon, Austin; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Beverly Anderson;
and step-brother, Roger Dixon.

Emily Kay (Engel) Howley, 93, of Hopkins, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at
her home.
She was born Dec. 30, 1908, in Deerfield. She was a graduate of Winona
State College and was a long-time resident of Austin.
Survivors include son, Eugene (Peggy) Howley, Kiawah Island, S.C.;
daughters, Marilyn Mangano, Tiffin, Ohio; Kathleen Jacobson, Burnsville;
12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Engel, Burnsville;

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Howley; and son, Thomas Howley.

Geraldine M. (Smith) Jacobson1933-2002
Geraldine M. Jacobson, 69, of rural Austin, died Friday, April 26, 2002,
at her home.
She was born Jan. 16, 1933, in Climbing Hill, Iowa, to Wesley and Hilda
(Boysen) Smith. She graduated from Climbing Hill High School in 1951 and
attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught for
two years in Lanyon, Iowa. On Feb. 14, 1954, she married Leon Jacobson in
Climbing Hill, Iowa. They farmed together in rural Lanyon from 1954 to 1967,
until moving to rural Austin where they purchased a farm and where they have
remained. She was a member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Farm
Bureau, Bakers Dozen and an active member of the Republican Party.
Survivors include husband, Leon Jacobson, rural Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Kristie Jacobson, Rochester; Scot and Mary Jacobson, Cumming, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Eric Fressle, Aurora, Colo.; Lois and Doug Nash, Parker, Colo.; nine grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Darrell and Lorraine Smith, Sioux City, Iowa; Orlan and Aileen Hargens, Lincoln, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Warren Smith; sister, Shirley Berands; and half-sister, Erma Cooley.

Kenneth Clair Jahnel 1921-2002
Kenneth Clair Jahnel, 80, of Farmington, formerly of Austin, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital, Shakopee.
He was born Nov. 3, 1921, in New Haven, Iowa, to Edward and Caroline
(Towle) Jahnel. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On May
31, 1947, he married Bernice Hayes in Minneapolis. He worked for Branif
Aircraft as a mechanic until his retirement in the late 70's. He was a
member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Farmington.
Survivors include daughters, Nancy Jahnel, New Prague; Mary Ann (Dan) Jones, Wichita, Texas; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife.

Margaret Jeanette Johnson 1916-2002
Margaret Jeanette Johnson, 86, of Austin died Saturday, April 6, 2002,
at the Austin Medical Center. She was born March 9, 1916, in Belview, to
Jens Simon and Mina (Flom) Gunelson.
She grew up in Belview and graduated from Belview High School. During
and after her attendance at the University of Minnesota Margaret worked
as a 4-H county extension agent in several Minnesota counties.
On March 29, 1942, she married Lowell A. F. Johnson in Belview. They
made their home in Minneapolis before they moved to California. They
returned to Minnesota in 1944, settling in St. Louis Park. They moved
to St. Cloud and later to Burma where Lowell helped establish a school
for Dunwoody Institute. They returned to Wayzata, where Margaret worked
at several mail order businesses, including Bookmen, Fabric Warehouse and
J.C. Penney before moving to Austin in 1974. She was a member of Our
Savior's Lutheran Church, the Art and Travel Club and the League of Women
Voters. Lowell died on March 25, 1996. In December 1997, Margaret suffered
a stroke and entered St. Mark's Lutheran Home.
Survivors include children, Linda Johnson, Owatonna; Kenric (Linda) Johnson, Sheridan, Wyo.; Blair Johnson, Plymouth; three grandchildren; sister-in-law, Adelaide Gunelson, Hibbing; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Otto, Adolph and Walter Gunelson; sister, Sarah Smith.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m., Friday,
April 12, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Marie V. (Petrick) Judd 1900-2002
Marie V. Judd, 101, of Austin, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Sacred
Heart Care Center.
She was born Dec. 19, 1900, in Spillville, Iowa, to Joseph and Barbara
(Swartz) Petrick. She married Leslie E. Judd and they celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary in 1970. Leslie died on July 31 that same year.
Marie was a homemaker and helped her husband with his businesses. She
was a lifelong member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. She loved cooking,
gardening, music and the news. In 1992 she suffered a stroke and resided
at her place on Oakland Avenue until she broke her hip in 1994. Her new
home became Sacred Heart Care Center.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Alvira "Judy" and Archie Solyst, Austin; Sharon and Richard Heikkila, Prescott, Wis.; son, O'Dean Judd, Los Almos, N.M.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., today, April 19, 2002, with a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake service and also from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
Service: 11 a.m., Saturday, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson officiating. Casket bearers will be grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Irma L. (Volp) Kemmerick 1926-2002
Irma L. Kemmerick, 75, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday,
April 28, 2002, at Madonna Towers, Rochester, Minnesota.
She was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Minneapolis, to Albert and Emily
(Bretschneider) Volp. On May 16, 1953, she married Bernard William
Kemmerick at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in Minneapolis. She
was a homemaker.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Rick Andrist, Rochester; Joan and Brooks Taylor, Pocahontas, Iowa; eight grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Clarence "Clare" and Mary Volp, Minneapolis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, Feb. 25, 1990; two sisters; and two stillborn sons.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., today, April 30, 2002, with a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake service and on Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Richard Donald "Dick" Koski 1946-2002
Richard Donald "Dick" Koski, 55, of Waltham, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at his home.
He was born Oct. 2, 1946, in Austin, to Albert and Lottie (Modderman)
Koski. He was a graduate of Austin High School, Austin Community College
and Winona State University. He started work at Hormel Company in 1964, and
served as Union President of Local 9 for the past nine years. On June 15,
1968, he married Linda Johnson in Austin. Dick served in the United States
Air Force for two years and in the Air Reserves for four years. He was a
member of the Hayfield American Legion Rothie Post #330. He enjoyed family
and friends, fishing, golfing, and playing pool.
Survivors include wife, Linda Koski, Waltham; sons, Dustin (Charissa) Koski, Byron; Weston (Crystal) Koski, Hayfield; daughter, Leslee Koski, Waltham; four grandchildren; sister, Margaret (Robert) Peterson, Davenport, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter.

Edith H. (Fiebiger) Kruckeberg 1924-2002
BORN IN MOWER COUNTY
Edith H. Kruckeberg, 77, of Blooming Prairie died Saturday, March 30,
2002, at Austin Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 14, 1924 to John and Marie (Peterka) Fiebiger in
Waltham Township. After graduating from Blooming Prairie High School,
she married Kenneth Kruckeberg at St. John's Lutheran Church in Havana
Township on Nov. 27, 1942. She and Kenneth purchased and operated the
Village Cafe in Blooming Prairie. She also the cook at the Blooming
Prairie Elementary School for 25 years before retiring in 1994.

Ruth E. Lerud, 80, of Austin, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Good
Samaritan Center, Albert Lea.
She was born March 12, 1922, to Hugo A. and Pearl H. (Hendricks)
Berndt in Mayer. On April 25, 1942, she married Herbert Lerud in
Minneapolis. Ruth lived in the London area for over 50 years before moving
to Lyle in November 1999. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, crafts, house
plants and volunteer work for SEMCAC in the Lyle area.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Barbara and Charles Shotliff, Austin; Patricia Davis and Robert Oberg, Custer, S.D.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clifford and Della Berndt, Elk Run Heights, Iowa; Donald and Maxine Berndt, Coon Rapids; sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Lionel Stowe, New Brighton.

Dorothy M. Lunde, 91, of Austin, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at
Comforcare Good Samaritan Center, Austin.
She was born March 8, 1911, in Austin, to Chauncy and Mabel (Greer)
Matthews. She graduated from Austin High School in 1928. On May 15,
1937, she married Everett Lunde at her parents' home in Austin.
She worked as a secretary for the George A. Hormel Company for nine
years and later worked for the Jordan Builders Company for almost 20 years.
She retired in 1974. Dorothy and Everett wintered in Mesa, Ariz. for 16
years. Dorothy was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Austin, Unity
Chapter #29 O.E.S. and a past Matron. She belonged to Bridge Club, Birthday
Club and (B.P.O.E.) DOES.
Survivors include husband, Everett Lunde, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph and Barbara Lunde, Montevideo; James Lunde and Gwen Olson, Minneapolis; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Robert Matthews, Harry Matthews and C.G. Matthews; sister, Blanche Matthews Hawkins.

She was born Oct. 2, 1916, in Kossuth County, Iowa to Charles and Jessie
Myrtle (Gregory) Thompson. At a young age she moved with her parents to the
Claremont area.
She was a member of Claremont Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian
Women's Association, Claremont Legion Auxiliary, Claremont Senior Citizens
and Blooming Prairie Senior Citizens.
She was a homemaker and also worked as a medical assistant for 20 years.
Survivors include son, Roland (Sonya) Martin, Austin; daughter-in-law, Mary Martin, Owatonna; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter, Marlys; son, Willard; five brothers and three sisters.

Nancy K. Mens, 53, of Austin, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Austin
Medical Center.
She was born April 4, 1949, to Robert and Delores (Iverson) Morgan in
Austin.
A lifelong Austin resident, she was housekeeper for many private
residences. She attended Crane Chapel and belonged to the Eagles Club.
She loved the outdoors, riding jet skiis, camping and shopping trips.

at her home in the company of her husband and children.
Born Sept. 30, 1928, in Taopi, she worked many years at the Hormel Meat
Plant in Austin prior to her retirement to Yuma, Ariz. with her husband,
Leslie. Virginia enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Robert D. Nelson, 70, of Lyle, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Austin Medical Center.
He was born April 20, 1931, in Austin, to Raymond D. and Genevieve (Hanson) Nelson.
After graduating from Lyle High School, he attended Austin Community College.
On Oct. 14, 1950, he married Helen Heard in Lyle.
Bob was employed by the Hormel Corporation, working there for many years. A lifelong Lyle resident, he also operated a television repair business in Lyle.
He was a member of Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church in Lyle and the Lyle Legion Club.
He enjoyed sports, particularly playing golf.
Survivors include wife, Helen; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Paul Wilson, Sr., Mantorville; son and daughters-in-law, Joel and Penny Nelson, Plainview; Sandy Anderson, St. Cloud; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Iris and Clare Vincent, Albert Lea.

Leslie "Jerome" Olson, 62, of Austin, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at
his home.
He was born Aug. 2, 1939, in Harmony, to Bennie and Anna Viola (Storlie)
Olson. He attended school in Harmony and Austin, graduating from Austin
High School in 1958. Following graduation, he worked at Nelson's Market
while attending Austin Vo-Tech. In 1963, he entered the United States Air
Force serving in England. After his discharge in 1967, he returned to Austin
where he was employed at Streater Inc. in Albert Lea, retiring in 2000. He
enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and woodworking. He was a member of St.
Olaf Lutheran Church.
Survivors include brothers, Burnell (Doloris) Olson, Lansing; Arlyn Olson, Denison, Texas; Donald (Doris) Olson, Austin; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother in infancy; sister-in-law, Shirley Olson.

Erma C. Orth, 85, of Austin, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at the Austin Medical Center.
She was born June 30, 1917, in Kenmore, N.D., to Arthur and Ora (Geckler)
May. Her family moved to Iowa near Ames and later to Austin. She graduated
from Austin High School in 1935.
On May 24, 1939, she married Roy Orth in Austin. Together they farmed
near Lansing. Erma was active at the Senior Citizens Center and the Austin
Baptist Chapel where she was a member.

Doris M. Qualey, 78, of Austin, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Austin Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Lakefield, to Albert and Helen (Malchow)
Hage. She attended Country School in Lakefield. When she was 18, she
traveled around the United States doing various jobs including working on
airplanes that were used in World War II.
In 1945, she moved to Austin. On April 3, 1948, she married Alden Qualey at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Austin.
She did various jobs in Austin; waitressing, working for Hormel and being a homemaker until her children graduated from High School.
She enjoyed her gardening and would can much of the harvest to share with others.

teacher at Villisca School District until she retired in 1982.

Vincent J. Stadtherr 1913-2002
Vincent J. Stadtherr, 89, Austin, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
He was born Jan. 22, 1913 in Gibbon to John and Genevieve (Bushard)
Stadtherr. He graduated from Gibbon High School and studied at the
University of Minnesota. He was active in the Midwest amateur baseball
leagues as an outfielder. He was an officer with the United States Army
in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II.
He married Bernice Kelly in DeGraff on March 29, 1948. He was a member of
the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a flower
hybridizer and exhibited gladiolus at local, state and regional flower shows.
He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Mark Stadtherr and Joan Bennecke, Granger, Ind.; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Gregory Bissen, Maple Grove; two grandchildren, Patrick and Katie Bissen.
He is preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.

Douglas Paul Wilke, 59, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Rochester Methodist Hospital.
He was born Jan. 20, 1943, to Paul and Frances (Gilbertson) Wilke in Blooming Prairie.
He attended Austin High School. He served in the Army in Germany from 1960 until 1963. Returning to Austin, he worked at Wilson's and Schweigert Foods in Albert Lea.
On July 20, 1974, he married Marian Ferguson in Austin.
A member of the Eagles Club, Doug also enjoyed pre-1840s rendezvous, working on cars, camping and fishing.
Survivors include wife, Marian Wilke, Austin; brothers, Richard (Linda) Wilke, Fort Madison, Iowa; Jeff (Cindy) Wilke, Albert Lea; sisters, Dorene Wilke, San Diego, Calif.; Janice (David) Williams, Burnsville; Lori Brody, Austin; brother-in-law, Tebbe DeBoer, Dundas; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Frances Wilke; and sister, Sharene Fay DeBoer.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, April 7, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Monday. Military rites by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91.
Service: 11 a.m., Monday, at the funeral home with the Rev. Dan Kahl officiating.

Benjamin J. Winkels 1924-2002
Benjamin J. Winkels, 77, of Austin, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at his home.
He was born Nov. 6, 1924, in Taopi, to William and Barbara (Schaefer) Winkels. He graduated from Adams Sacred Heart School and Adams High School. He entered into service in 1950 during the Korean Conflict.
On Feb. 14, 1953, he married Donna Bauch at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams. He worked as a milk man for Sheedy Dairy and in construction with Joseph Wagner. He was active in Cub and Boy Scouting for 14 years. He served as the American Legion County Commander and the VFW Post #1216 Commander for three terms. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his grandchildren, woodworking and working on the farm.
Survivors include wife, Donna Winkels, Austin; sons, Richard and Carol Winkels, Grand Forks, N.D.; Michael and Patty Winkels, Luverne; Dwaine and Dawn Winkels, Albert Lea; daughters, Debra and Larry Callahan, Lyle; Linda Winkels and Kevin Hansen, Austin; Robin and Larry Wangen, Albert Lea; 14 grandchildren; brothers, Roman Winkels, Adams; William Winkels, Adams; George and Linda Winkels, Adams; Herman Winkels, Moorhead; Kenneth and March Winkels, Chester, Iowa; sisters, Sister Mary Marcella Winkels, Broken Arrow, Okla.; Ardella and Paul Krysan, Cresco, Iowa; Nita and Gerald Gadient, Goodhue; Viola and Ronald Muenzhuber, Osakis; Philomena Carnahan, Glendale, Calif.; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., today, April 12, 2002, with a 7 p.m. wake service and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Service: 11:30 a.m., Saturday, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson officiating. Casket bearers will be Matt Callahan, Sam Callahan, Jeremiah Hansen, Ben Winkels, Jason Hansen, Dustin Wangen and Jacob Winkels.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91 and VFW Post #1216.

Magdalena M. (nee Jax) Wolthoff 1913-2002
Magdalena M. Wolthoff, age 88, formerly of LeRoy, Mower county, Minnesota,
died Friday at the Adams Health Care Center in Adams, Minnesota, where
she had resided for a short time.
She was born July 27, 1913 to Michael Jax and Elizabeth Ulwelling Jax
in Johnsburg, Minnesota. She attended the Johnsburg Catholic School
through the eighth grade.
On May 21, 1946 she was married to Edward Peter Wolthoff in Milwaukee,
Wis. and they lived in LeRoy for the next 50 years. She was an active
member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in LeRoy and a member of the LeRoy
Senior Citizens Group. When her health started to decline, she moved to
Austin and was a resident of the Adams Health Care Center at time of her
death. She enjoyed cooking, knitting, gardening, quilting and playing cards.
Survivors include daughters, Ruth (Robert) Harris, Austin; Elizabeth (Dennis) Hunter, Woodland, Calif.; brother, Carl Jax of Adams; sister, Josephine Eisterhold, Owatonna; sisters-in-law, Katherine Jax, Austin; Anna Jax, Adams; and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers Edward, Gregory and Joe Jax, sisters Anna Gilgenbach and Helene Jax, infant sister Irmena and two grandsons.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2000 at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church.
Service: 1:30 p.m., Tuesday at St. Patricks Catholic Church in LeRoy with the Rev. Father Russell Seepaniak officiating.
Interment: St. Patricks Catholic Church Cemetery.

Wallace L. Yates 1930-2002
Wallace L. Yates, age 71, of rural Austin died at his home Thursday,
April 18, 2002.
He was born August 14, 1930 in Luther, Montana where he grew up and
graduated from high school in Roberts, Montana.
After serving in the Air Force, Wallace married Margaret R. Royce on
October 14, 1954 in Belfry, Montana.
He received a Mechanical Engineering Degree from Montana State University
and went to work for Martin Lockheed, designing the ejection cockpit.
Moving to Huntsville, Alabama, he worked on the NASA program with
Dr. Werner Von Braun, designing the lunar landing module and the moon
rover.
He later worked for Hormel Foods Corporation in Austin and retired
December 31, 1992.
He was a member of Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), Austin Pilots
Association and the Cedar Valley Conservation Club.
He enjoyed his family and placed great value on spending time with them.
He built his own home and enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding
while living in Montana and always looked forward to the next year of
gopher hunting.
He was a sailing enthusiast and enjoyed flying his own airplane to
pancake breakfasts.
He enjoyed reading, planting, growing and grafting fruit trees.
He made deer leather gloves for family and friends and each winter he
would sew one leather coat for one different family member.
Wallace is survived by his wife, Margaret R. Royce Yates of Austin;
children, James L. (Kathy) Yates of Chinook, Montana; Margaret A. (Michael)
Elward of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; Thomas O. Yates of Austin; brothers, Walter
Yates of Billings, Montana; Ralph (Dolly) Yates of Frannie, Wyoming; mother
and father-in-law, Alice and C. Dale and Royce of Belfry, Montana; four
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellen M. and J. Lee Yates.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2000 and one hour before the
service at the funeral home.
Service: 10 a.m., Monday at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev.
Orlin Mandsager officiating and military rites by American Legion Post 91.
Memorials: To the Hormel Nature Center and the Bozeman State University
Engineering Department.
