MITCHELL

1908-2002

Fern W. Mitchell, 93, of Caledonia, formerly of Kellogg, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at the Caledonia Lutheran Home.

She was born in Caledonia Dec. 9, 1908, to Eugene and Emma (Koethe) Wilhelm. She attended school in Caledonia and graduated in 1926. On December 4, 1937, she married Lloyd Klein in La Crescent. She was employed with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for many years, living in Caledonia, St. Charles and Austin, before retiring in 1960. During this time, she met Lawrence Mitchell and they were married on June 28, 1952 in Osage, Iowa. She enjoyed fishing and watching birds and feeding birds. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge in Austin, the Pioneers (Northwestern Bell retirees), and the Kellogg United Methodist Church where she also was a member of the Church Women United.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Duff, Caledonia; daughter-in-law, Patricia Mitchell, Minneapolis; step-daughter, Marion Anderson, Minneapolis; granddaughter, Beth Mitchell, Caledonia; granddaughter, Sara Mitchell, Minneapolis; grandson Jason Mitchell, Minneapolis; step-grandsons, Scott and Mark Anderson; great-grandchildren Charles and Kaitlyn Fah, Caledonia, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Mitchell; her parents; son, Charles; sisters Me Heintz and Mildred Inglett; brother LeRoy Wilhelm and two brothers in infancy.

Service: Pending.

Alice "Dutch" Nargan

1939-2002

Alice "Dutch" Nargan, 62 of Rochester, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002 at St. Marys Hospital.

She was born in Austin, Minnesota, on August 13, 1939. In November, 1957 she married William D. Nargan in Binghamton, N.Y.

Survivors include her husband, William; father, Herb Berg, Rochester; daughters, Cher (Bob) Meyer, Cedar, Minn.; Wendy (mark) Peterson, Rochester; Caron (Randy) Watson, Miami Beach, FL.; Jan (Cory) Dahlstrom, Camplin; sons, John (Andrea) Nargan, Mission Viejo, Calif.; Scott Nargan, Burnsville; sisters, Barb Hines, Rochester; Marti Rickeral, Austin; and brother, Herb Berg, Austin.

Visitation: One half hour before service

Bea Thoresen

1922-2000

OSAGE, IOWA - Bea Thoresen, 78, of Osage, died Wednesday (Oct. 11, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. Bea was born Aug. 29, 1922, in Austin, Minn., the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Schroeder) Cressey. She graduated from Austin High School in 1940.

She was a tap dance instructor in Austin for several years at her dance school "Beatrice Cressey School of Dancing." She was united in marriage to Leonard Thoresen on July 7, 1946, at the Methodist Church in Austin. They farm east of Osage.

Bea was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the Rebecca Circle and the church choir there. She also was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour before services at the church.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard, of Osage; daughter, Susan Roetman and her husband, Michael, of Rock Rapids, and their children, Jennifer and Jessica; four sons, Philip Thoresen, of Osage, Jim Thoresen, of Nora Springs, Brian Thoresen, of Osage, and Ken Thoresen, of Austin, Texas; one sister, Jeannette McKinnon, of Benson, Ariz.; and one brother, Charles Cressey and his wife, Lorraine, of Seattle, Wash.

She was preceded in death by parents; one sister, Genevieve Cressey.

Phillip Benhard Nordstrom, Sr.

1942-2002

Phillip Benhard Nordstrom, Sr. 59, of Austin died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002 at his home.

He was born in Blooming Prairie March 28, 1942 to Eric and Burnette (Jaeger) Nordstrom.

On April 2, 1960, he married Mercedes Gwinn at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Phillip worked with the Minnesota Department of Transportation and retired in 1997 after 35 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Mercedes, Austin; mother, Burnette Pizanie, Menahga; children, Phillip Nordstrom, Jr., Austin; Carin (Tary) Draper, Warsaw; Robert Nordstrom, Austin; John Nordstrom, Minneapolis; Garry (Suzie) Nordstrom, Duluth; Wayne (Bonnie) Helland, Owatonna; William Helland, Owatonna; Brenda (Les) Schwartz, Wadena; Debbie (Randy) Olson, Menahga; grandson, Nathan Draper, Warsaw; Son-In-Law, David Malm, Apple Valley; nieces, nephews, cousins.

Gladys Jean (nee Proffitt) Ofstedahl

1923-2002

Gladys Jean Ofstedahl, 78, of Austin died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002 at Methodist Hospital.

She was born in Lockhart, Minn. on Dec. 22, 1923 to Charles and Joanna (Swaim) Proffitt. She graduated from Ada High School in 1942. She worked for the Dutch Maid Ice Cream Store, local banks and Austin Public Schools until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of the New Life Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church, Austin. She enjoyed gardening and reading.

Survivors include her husband, Robert G. Ofstedahl, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, David (Deanna) Ofstedahl, Austin; Gary (Linda) Ofstedahl, Austin; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen (Ronald) Howard, Austin, Janice (Thomas) Lorimor, Plainview; Karen (Richard "Smokey") Carlson, Oakland; 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, mother-in-law, Helen Ofstedahl, Austin; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Norma Jean (Sam) Farrand, Austin; Shirley Bischoff, Austin.

Inga J. (nee Lund) Olson

1912-2002

Inga Josephine Olson, 89, of Austin died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002 at her son's home in Austin.

She was born in Waukon, Ia. Oct. 17, 1912 to Jens and Ida (Johnson) Lund.

On Jan. 7, 1933, she married Floyd Allen Olson.

She worked at the Austin Bakery for 22 years, then as a Nurses Aide at Burr Oak until 1984 and until 1993 she was personal care giver to Dr. Conwell.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth D. (Marilyn) Olson, Des Moines; Roger A. (Patricia) Olson, Austin; Dale K. (Paulette) Olson, Elgin, Texas, six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; sister and brother-in-law, Alphia (Gilman) Kolsrud, Waukon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Mathias Lund and granddaugter, Janice Kay.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at the funeral home and at the church on Monday one hour before the service.

Thorman Olson

1911-2002

Thorman Olson, 90, of rural Lyle, died Saturday Feb. 23, 2002, at St. Mark,s Lutheran Home.

He was born in Nevada Township, Mower County, June 22, 1911, to Hans and Ostine "Stena" (Enerson) Olson. He received his education in the Nevada Township country school. On March 5, 1945, he married Vera Irene Nelson. He was a farmer near Lyle. He was a member of Six-Mile Grove Lutheran Church and the Lyle American Legion Post 105. He enjoyed traveling, woodworking, fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include; one son, David "Burly" Olson, Austin; one daughter, Barbara (Steve) Wilson, Omaha, Neb.; two grandchildren, Troy Olson, Lyle and Kerry (Matt) Webber, Lyle; two great-grandchildren, Katlin Webber and Christopher Webber, Lyle; one sister-in-law, Armeda Olson, Rose Creek; one brother-in-law, Leonard Torgerson, Waseca; and many nieces, nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and four brothers, Leonard, Rudolph, Harlan and Richard Olson.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25th and at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Service: 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Six-Mile Grove Lutheran Church, Lyle, with Rev. Lydia Mittag, officiating.

1915-2002

Loretta Dorothy Pater, 86, of Hayfield, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Fieldcrest Nursing Home.

She was born in Waltham to Carl and Anna (Paape) Ehmke on Sept. 2, 1915. She was a member of the St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Waltham. She was a homemaker and active in many church organizations.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Dean (Darlene) Pater, Derby, Kan.; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria (Tom) Breigenzer, Silver Thorn, Colo.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Martin Ehmke, Austin; sisters, Luella Haage, Woodstock Ill.; Lucille Peterson, Rochester N.Y., nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Pater; son, Eugene; and two brothers, Melvin and Maynard Ehmke.

Marcella T. (nee Theobald) Perry

1909-2002

Marcella T. Perry, 92, of Adams, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002 at the Adams Health Care Center.

She was born in Meyer, Iowa, April 11, 1909 to Thomas and Gertrude (Kloeckner) Theobald. On Nov. 25, 1936 she married Edward Perry. She was a Nanny and Housekeeper.

Survivors include sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Seep, Villa Park, Illinois; Angelita, Dubuque; Helen (Roy) Smith, Rochester; brother and sister-in-law, Clem (Alvina) Theobald, Stacyville; sisters-in-law, Louise Altman, Highwood, Ill.; Alvina Theobald, Richmond, Calif.; niecess and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Isabel Wagner and Rosella Gerhart; brothers, Paul and Walter Theobald.

Visitation: Held Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and at the church for one hour before the service.

MARCELLA PERRY

ADAMS, Minn. - Marcella Perry, 92, died Thursday (Feb. 14, 2002) at Adams Health Care Center in Adams, Minn.

She has resided with her husband, Edward, for more than 40 years at El Segundo, Calif., until her move last August to the Cedar Court apartments in Adams. Following a brief illness and hospitalization, she moved to the Adams Health Care Center.

While burial will be at their family plot in Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City, Calif., a funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams, Minn. Visitation will be at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Marcella Perry, the daughter of Thomas and Gertrude (Kloeckner) Theobald, was born April 11, 1909, at the farm home east of Stacyville. She attended school in Meyer and was employed in the Rochester area before moving to Chicago.

There she met and married Edward N. Perry on Nov. 25, 1936. They continued to do family work in the Chicago area until, following his Army service, they took up residence in their El Segundo home. Edward, employed by Garrett Corporation until his retirement in 1973, died Dec. 9, 1999.

Marcella is survived by sisters, Sister Angelita (Genevieve), Mount St. Francis, Dubuque, and Helen Smith, Rochester; a brother, Clem Theobald, Stacyville; and nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband; her parents; two sisters, Isabel Wagner and Rosella Gerhart; and two brothers, Paul and Walter Theobald.

David Tunis Rockne

1933-2002

David Tunis Rockne, 68, of Shakopee, died Feb. 2, 2002, in Fort Meyers, Fla.

He was born in Austin July 29, l933, to Tony B. and Emma (Jacobson) Rockne. On April 18, 1953, he married Dorothy Cochlin in New Hampton, Iowa. He retired from Northwestern Bell after 34 years of employment. He bought Mortel Phone Center in 1988 and enlarged the company. He enjoyed being a Boy Scout leader, was a member of the Shakopee Jaycees and Lions Club and enjoyed golf, fishing, and carving. He served on the city council and 13 years on the planning commission.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; children, Samuel Dean and wife, Janet, Northfield; Jon David and his special friend Deborah Deveny, Cape Coral, Fla.; Juli Ellen and Johan Nelson, Lakeville, Duane and wife, Jane, Belle Plaine, and Patrick, Chaska; five grandsons; one step-grandaughter; brother Richard and his wife, Kathy; nieces and two grand nephews.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at the funeral home.

1911-2002

Vivian Sprung Rolfe, 90, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002 at St. John's Lutheran Home in Albert Lea.

She was born in Mower County May 12, 1911 to Leo and Adeline (Marburger) Meyer. She married Ernest Glen Sprung on Sept. 3, 1931 in rural Sargeant. Following Ernest's death in 1967, she married Burson Rolfe on Sept. 2, 1972. She enjoyed being a homemaker, knitting, gardening, flowers, canning and reading books.

Survivors include her husband, daughter, Erna (Ernest) Boyer, Elkhart, Ind.; sons, Edsel (Beryl) Sprung, Brownsdale; Allan Sprung, Rochester; and nine grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Ernest Sprung, three sisters, Leona Meyer, Edna Bieto, and Gloria Meyer, one brother, Emmett Meyer and three siblings who died in infancy.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., Worlein Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church

Adella I. (Van Ryn) Sterling

1908-2002

Adella I. Sterling, 93, of Austin, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisc.

She was born in Faribault Oct. 23, 1908, to Henry and Mary (Van Berkom) Van Ryn. She graduated from Bethlehem Academy in Faribault and attended teacher training school at Mankato State.

On Oct. 21, 1939, she married Roger J. Sterling. She taught school at St. Augustine and substituted at Pacelli High School and Queen of Angels. She was a member of St. Augustine Parish and was an active member of the Rosary Society and Legion of Mary.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy (Brad) Savage, Franklin, Wisc.; Diane Sterling (Jimmy Carter), San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Joanne (Leo) Hansen, Austin; four sisters-in-law, Maxine Sterling, Faribault; Irene Van Ryn, Rochester; Gladys Van Ryn, Kirkland, Wash.; Chris Handrahan, Austin; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; her son, Peter; three sisters, Marion Van Ryn; Josephine Michael and Veronica Van Ryn; six brothers, Philip; George; Walter; John; August and Ralph Van Ryn.

Clara Rebecca (Njaa) Swenson

1908-2002

Clara Rebecca Njaa Swenson, 93, died Feb. 4, 2002, at Augustana Nursing Home in Minneapolis.

She was born on July 3, 1908. to Rev. Sven and Inger (Ueland) Njaa. She graduated from Northwood High School in 1926; and St. Olaf College in 1930. In 1931 she married Rev. Arthur Swenson. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. She enjoyed being the director of the choir, and chapel building director at Becketwood Retirement Home.

Survivors include her daughters, Kathryn (Robert) Lange, Austin; Mary (Gordon) Olson, Golden Valley; son, Fred Arthur and wife, Barbara, Venice, Fla.; sister, Judith (Orvin) Bilstad of Loveland, Colo.; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and two great, great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Arthur; parents; brothers, Harold, Reuben and Ralph; sisters, Margaret Rosholt and Arna Njaa; and a grandson John Power Swenson.

Service: 11 a.m., Thursday at Bethel Lutheran Church, 4120 17th Avenue South, Minneapolis with Revs. Glen Wheeler, James Hartsoe, and Milo Gronseth officiating.

Irene Leocadie (nee Ochs) Tausche

1906-2002

Irene Leocadie Ochs Tausche, 95, of Austin died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at her home in Austin.

She was born in New Ulm Dec. 26, 1906, to Joseph Anton Ochs, Jr. and Emma Thilmmaine. She attended private and parochial schools in New Ulm and then graduated from the College of St. Catharine in St. Paul in 1928. She taught high school English and German in St. Peter and Crookston before becoming an English teacher at Austin High School. She married Vincent Tausche on Sept. 3, 1934.

She was active in the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters and the women's auxiliary of the Sacred Heart Home. In the 1960s, she was a member and chairwoman of the Austin City Planning Commission.

She is survived by her sister, Imelda, of California; son Charles, Chicago, Ill.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 at the church and immediately following the service at the church.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Edward's Catholic Church with Father Donald Zenk officiating.

Internment: Calvary Cemetery.

George E. Twedell

1921-2002

George E. Twedell, age 80, of Austin, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

He was born Oct. 15, 1921 in Austin to George R and Mary (Logas) Twedell. He graduated from Austin High School in 1940 and then enlisted in the Marines during World War II. On Oct. 2, 1948 he was united in marriage to Mabel Sveikovsly at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. He was an optician and retired after 50 years in the optical business. He was a lifelong member of the VFW and the Knights of Columbus. His favorite pastimes included fishing, hunting and reading.

Survivors include his wife: Mabel Twedell, Austin; three sons and a daughter-in-law: Barry Twedell, Austin, Brad and Diane Twedell, Albert Lea, Brent Twedell, Lyle; three sisters and a brother-in-law: Mildred Anderson, Mapleview, Dorothy Smith, Austin, Carol and Ted Getchell, Austin.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters-Ethel Voss, Agnes Lee and Mary Sheeley, brother, Ray Twedell.

A funeral mass will be celebrated 1:30 pm on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father William Becker officiating.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m.; 6:30 p.m. wake service on Thursday and also noon-1 pm on Friday

She was born July 21, 1904, in Owatonna, to Otto and Mary Marquardt. She grew up in Owatonna. After high school, she worked at Northwestern Bell as a long distance operator and later as a supervisor.

On Aug. 5, 1924, she married Otto C. Anderson of Austin. They were married for 50 years. He died Aug. 19, 1974. Mrs. Anderson was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and was active in the Lutheran Church Women organization. She was a member of Eastern Star and the Austin Garden Club. She served as an election judge for many years. She had many interests and enjoyed playing bridge, knitting and current events.

Survivors include son, Robert (Rita), Rochester; two grandchildren; nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Visitation: One hour before the service at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2002, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home with the Rev. Orlin Mandsager officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

1917-2002

Arden Edward Wesley, 84, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

He was born in Delavan Dec. 23, 1917 to Sherman and Olga (Holt) Wesley. On August 25, 1940, he married Verna Rose Bundy. He was a retired employee of Hormel Foods with 40 years of service and a veteran of World War II serving in India.

Survivors include his sister, Lois Thompson, Blue Earth; daughter and son-in-law, Nina and Mark Rockafellow, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Cindy Wesley, Wells; granddaughter, Jennifer Schimek; grandson, Randall Wesley; granddaughter, Krystal Rockafellow; granddaughter, Bethany Rockafellow and granddaughter, Tessa Rockafellow.

Barbara Joyce Wilder, age 80, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002 at Comforcare good Samaritan Center.

She was born Dec. 18, 1921 to Donald and Laura (Olson) Morgan. She married Marshall Wilder in 1941 at Owatonna. She enjoyed fishing and working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include brother and sisters-in-law, Larry and Lenore Morgan; sisters-in-law, Betty Morgan, Irene Morgan; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, grandparents, sister, Margaret Capretz; brothers, Delmar Morgan, Spencer Morgan; sister, Delores Morgan.

Gertrude Sophie Wyant, 83, of Austin, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born in Wykoff Aug. 6, 1918, to Phillip C. and Marie (Horstmann) Rappe. She graduated from Austin High School in 1936. On July 15, 1938, she married Arnold L. Wyant. She worked as a dental technician. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed working with arts and crafts, sewing and crocheting.

Survivors include one daughter, Judith (Gary) Snyder, Bloomington; a daughter-in-law, Carla Wyant, Austin; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mariel Faber, Austin; one brother, Harry (Loretta) Rappe, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Big Jim Wyant and two brothers, Harold and Irvin Rappe.

Visitation: There will be no reviewal or visitation prior to the service.

Service: 11 a.m., Monday, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Rev. William Natzke officiating.

1929-2002

Robert "Red" Eugene Yocom, 72, of Austin died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002 at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born in Albert Lea Dec. 2, 1929 to Glenn and Bernice Yocom.

He graduated from Austin High School in 1948.

On Nov. 10, 1951, he married Irene Elizabeth Gothard.

He retired from Hormel Foods after 47 years of service.

He coached softball, basketball and was a football line judge for Pacelli.

He enjoyed playing sports, hunting, fishing, bowling, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Elizabeth Yocom, Austin; daughter, Sheila Yocom and special friend, Tom Teske, North Mankato; son, Robert A. She was born September 19, 1985 to Robert K. Barnes and Cathy M. (Belden) Barnes in Austin.

A sophomore at Austin High School, Sarah was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Lester J. Betsinger, 65, of Thomson, Illinois, formerly of Sandwich, Illinois, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at his home.

He was born on Nov. 8, 1936, in Iowa, to Lester C. and Bernice M. (Northness) Betsinger. He graduated from Queen of Angels High School in Austin. He served in the United States Army from Jan. 18, 1955, to Jan. 8, 1958. On July 15, 1978, he married Martha Fern Bales in Sandwich, Ill. Les worked for Caterpillar in Montgomery, Ill. for 30 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Batavia, Ill. He enjoyed country western music, playing guitar, fishing, his grandchildren and his dog, Pokey.

Elizabeth "Beth" Margaret Thompson Carlton, 78, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, in Natchez, Miss.

She was born Dec. 15, 1923, to Halvor Evan and Elizabeth Margarethe Helseth Thompson.

She was a housewife and a retired home economics teacher who taught at Natchez High School for many years. She received her bachelor's degree at Iowa State University and her master's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi.

She was an active volunteer for many organizations. She was a Methodist and a member of several local and professional organizations. She was a past member of the Natchez Garden Club.

Survivors include husband, Charles Forest Carlton; daughter, Beth Ann Dudley, St. Petersburg, Fla.; son, Charles McKinney (Ann) Carlton, Natchez; four grandchildren; brother, Hugh (Della) Thompson, Dallas; brother-in-law, Robert Hentschel, Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Marjorie Hentschel.

Frances N. Carroll, 90, of Austin, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 1, 1911 in Prairieburg, Iowa to Robert and Martha (Tuel) Graves. She moved to the Brownsdale area as a child, attended grade school in Brownsdale and graduated from Austin High School. She worked for SS Kresges until her marriage to Francis J. Carroll on August 31, 1940. She was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church, St. Rita Unit and the Rosary Society.

Survivors include husband, Francis Carroll, Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Jake Rietsema, Hollandale; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Patricia Carroll, Cloquet; Patrick and Elaine Carroll, Austin; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Gert Wilder, Lancaster, Calif.; Jean and Glenn Krulish, Austin; brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Marge Graves, Austin; nieces and nephews.

Charles E. Delaney, 86, of Austin, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

He was born March 25, 1915, in Emerado, N.D. to Charles and Mary (Evanson) Delaney. He served in the United States Army for four years during World War II. Shortly after the war he moved to Austin where he married Cecelia A. McGee on April 30, 1946.

He was a retired employee of the George A. Hormel Company. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed reading, dancing, camping, gardening, fishing and hunting.

Jozetta J. (nee Sturgeon) Dieser

1921-2002

Jozetta J. Dieser, 80, of Aurora, Ill., died March 17, 2002, at the Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, Ill.

She was born June 5, 1921, in Dows, Iowa, to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Sturgeon.

She graduated from Dows High School in 1932.

After graduation, she lived with a sister and brother-in-law in Austin and worked for the Hormel Company.

She married George H. Dieser at St. Augustine Catholic Church on October 10, 1942.

In March, 1959, she and her husband moved to Medford where they owned and operated Dieser Hardware Store until March, 1970. Then, they moved to Owatonna where she worked for Jostens until her retirement in 1984,

She was a member of the Christ the King Church of Medford, a charter member of Court St. Ann's #1940 Catholic Daughters of America in Medford. In Owatonna, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph's Women's Council Ad and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ronald Janes of Aurora, Ill.; granddaughter, Kim Bentley of Aurora, Ill.; grandson, Larry A. Larson, Oswego, Ill.; great-grandsons, Alan and Scott Larson, Oswego, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; brother, Dale Sturgeon; brother, Gene Sturgeon; sister, Margorie Reigel; sister, Elizabeth Langland; sister, Henrietta Jenison; sister, Delores Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Marie Dahle, 82, of Hayfield, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

She was born December 26, 1919, in Austin, to Selmer and Mabel (Distad) Lewis. On January 30, 1936, she married Stanley D. Dahle in Hayfield. She was a life-long resident of this area. She worked as a cashier for Peterson Super Market in Hayfield for 33 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the ladies circle.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Christine Dahle, Hayfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Vernon DeRaad, Hayfield; Judy and Charles Stoelk, Hayfield; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley, in 1983; one brother; one sister.

Leone L. (nee Davis) Gallaher

1904-2002

Leone L. Gallaher, 97, of Brownsdale, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Adams Heath Care Center, Adams, Minnesota.

She was born June 11, 1904, in Milford, Iowa, to George and Nettie (Wheeler) Davis.

She graduated from Milford High School. After graduation she worked as a Telephone Operator in Spencer, Iowa.

On Dec. 29, 1926, she married William Gallaher in Estherville, Iowa.

After their marriage, the couple moved to Lansing where William farmed and she was a homemaker. She belonged to Mother's Club and was a member of Lansing Methodist church where she taught Sunday School and participated in Women's group (WMS). Later, they moved to farms near Dexter and Brownsdale. She then became a member of Brownsdale Methodist Church and was an active member in WMS there. She belonged to Mower County Home extension Council and helped with local charity drives. She enjoyed baking, canning, preserving foods, crocheting, reading poetry and feeding the birds.

Survivors include sons, Robert Gallaher, Spokane, Wash.; Richard (Mary) Gallaher, Brownsdale; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William, in 1970; four sisters; one great-granddaughter.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, April 1, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.

Service: 1 p.m., Tuesday, at the United Methodist Church in Brownsdale with the Rev. Dr. Donald D. Budd officiating.

Adeline C. Harrison, 87, of Austin, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 12, 1914, to William and Emma C. (Schmidt) Bicknese in Wykoff. On Sept. 13, 1937, she married Erwin Harrison in Nashua, Iowa. They were later divorced. She was owner-operator of the Railway Café for 14 years and was noted for her bread and pies. She loved to crochet and was very active at St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Survivors include children, Neal (Patricia) Bicknese, Sheridan, Wyo.; Jeanine (John) Lenway, Austin; Lois Kay (Stephen) Hellams, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Ross Harrison, Winona; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sister, Doreen Moore, Rochester; relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Walter.

Palmer C. Hegstad, 90, of LeRoy, formerly of Austin, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at the Riceville Care Center, Riceville, Iowa.

He was born June 1, 1911, in Ranson, N.D., to Paul and Clara Hegstad. On July 15, 1934, he married Ruby Danks in Minneapolis. Palmer worked at Hormel for many years.
