Arline D. Fuhrman

1922-2002

Arline D. Fuhrman, 79, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at St. Marks Lutheran Home.

She was born July 20, 1922, in Tuttle, N.D. to Frederick and Catherine (George) Mehlhaff. She graduated from Tuttle High School in 1940 and moved to St. Paul in 1946.

On May 26, 1947, she married Floyd Fuhrman in St. Paul. The couple moved to Austin in 1949, where they remained. Her hobbies included making ceramics, playing cards, ballroom dancing, spending time at her cabin and going to eat. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and making out-of-town deliveries with Mrs. Emma Murphy. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Austin Eagles Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors of America.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Laurie Steward, Warsaw; Joy and Mike Janning, Austin; Penny and Ron Mayzlik, Austin; son, Tom Fuhrman, Hayward; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Edna Askleson, Fargo, N.D.; Bertha and John Beck, Redland, Calif.; Liz Hayford, Greenleaf, Idaho; Ruth Pen, Lynden, Wash.; brothers, Ruben Mehlhaff, Connor, Mont.; Melvin Mehlhaff, Seattle, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1990; sisters, Lydia, Emelia, Alma and Hilda; brother, Alvin; two grandchildren in infancy.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., today, June 11, 2002, at the funeral home and Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Harold Deye officiating. Organist will be Marlene Schroeder and soloist will be Deborah Nordland. Casket bearers will be Angela Larson, Geoff Steward, Eric Janning, Dustin Janning, Mark Mayzlik and Terry Mayzlik.

Francis J. "Fuzzy" Gilgenbach

1913-2002

Francis "Fuzzy" J. Gilgenbach, 89, of Adams, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at Adams Health Care Center.

He was born April 26, 1913, in Taopi, to John and Mary (Fasbender) Gilgenbach.

He attended Lodi Country School and Sacred Heart School.

On June 25, 1938, he married Isabelle G. Retterath in Wapsi, Iowa.

Francis operated the family farm until he retired in 1979 and moved to Adams.

He was a member and past trustee of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a member of the Adams Swimming Pool Building Committee, Farm Bureau and Past Treasurer of Allied Lanes Bowling Association.

He enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards and traveling.

Survivors include wife, Isabelle Gilgenbach, Adams; son and daughters-in-law, Dr. David and Karen Gilgenbach, Elk River; Barbara Gilgenbach, Adams; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette and Gene Smith, Adams; Bernice and Allen Huseby, Rochester; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Tillie Gilgenbach, Adams; Agnes Smith, Rochester; Betty and Richard Badger, Rochester.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kenneth; twin grandsons; sister, Mildred Koenigs; brother, Alfred Gilgenbach.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., today, June 17, 2002, with a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. prayer service and Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Service: 11 a.m., Tuesday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Pastor Gregory Leif officiating. Organist will be Dar Boe and soloist will be Karen Ruechel. Casket Bearers will be Ronald Gilgenbach, James Huseby, Alan Steinkamp, Michael O'Conner, Sean Flaherty and Shawn Ruechel.

1922-2002

Bruce E. "Digger" Hall, 80, formerly of Austin, died Friday, May 31, 2002.

He was born Feb. 14, 1922, in Austin. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was employed by Mueller-Bies Funeral Home for 21 years.

Survivors include sons, Gary (Maggie); Brian (Sandy); daughter, Wendy; grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Merle Vokaty.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at the funeral home.

Gladys M. (nee Quast) Haney

1912-2002

Gladys M. Haney, 89, of Brainerd, Minnesota, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village, Brainerd.

She was born Oct. 28, 1912, in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, to Cord John and Ida (Mueller) Quast.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brainerd. She worked at the State Hospital as dining hall supervisor and also volunteered at the Brainerd Library.

Survivors include son, John (Darlene) Haney, Brainerd, seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Irene Tollerud, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; daughter, Verla Billman.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, June 24, 2002, at the funeral home.

Service: 10 a.m., Tuesday, at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd with the Rev. Linda Roal officiating.

Hertha Frieda (Glienke) Holtan

1917-2002

Hertha Frieda Holtan, 84, of Hayfield, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Fieldcrest Care Center.

She was born Dec. 15, 1917, in rural Dexter, to Carl and Laura (Rufledt) Glienke. She attended rural Mower County schools.

On June 15, 1940, she married Oscar Holtan at the Trinity Lutheran Church parsonage in Hayfield.

The couple farmed in Vernon Township until 1964, when they moved to Hayfield.

Hertha was employed at the Kahler Corporation Model Laundry in Rochester for 24 years, retiring in 1983.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Eileen Holtan, Minneapolis; Lucille and Richard Bernard, Port St. Lucie, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Linda Holtan, Hayfield; two grandsons; sister-in-law, Joyce Holtan, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar, in 1997; parents; brother, Gerhardt Glienke.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Service: 2 p.m., Wednesday, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield with Reverend Stephan Sandness officiating.

Arlene F. (Ulrich) Hopfe

1915-2002

Arlene F. Hopfe, 86, of Austin, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

She was born July 6, 1915 in Buckeye, Iowa to Charles and Pauline (Awe) Ulrich. She graduated from Austin High School in 1933. She married Orval V. Hopfe on June 2, 1934 in Minneapolis. She was employed at Hormel, Elam's Jewelry Store, Carriage House and managed the Goggins Candy Store.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Guinta, Chicago; three grandsons; eight great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law Maydene McDonald and Beth Meyer.

She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Wilma Hilker; brother, Wally Ulrich.

Visitation: At the church Monday one hour before the service.

Paul Harold Hull

1911-2002

Paul Harold Hull, 91, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Thursday, June 20, 2002, at his cabin in Canada.

He was born April 8, 1911, at Bunch, Iowa, to Burl and Mattie (Whistler) Hull. He graduated from Austin High School and worked for Hormel Foods from 1934 to 1944 when he went into the auction business. In 1935, he married Helen Larson.

He was a charter member of the Austin Lions Club, a member of the Minnesota Auctioneer Association, the Cedar Valley Conservation Club, the Marcellus King EEA Club, Fidelity Lodge #39 AF & AM and Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

An avid fisherman, he also enjoyed flying his plane and running the tractor.

Survivors include wife, Helen Hull, Austin; daughters and son-in-law, Paula DiPiazza, Phoenix, Ariz.; Rosemary and Jack Barrett, Durango, Colo.; son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Beverly Hull, Austin; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Iris Johnson, Austin; Vivian Halstead, Lodi, Calif.; Margaret Hull, Ogden, Utah; Agnes and Jim Kiel, Campbell, Calif.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, five brothers and one sister.

Kenneth E. Johnson

1920-2002

Kenneth E. Johnson, 82, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center in Grand Meadow from complications of a stroke.

He was born Feb. 18, 1920, in Frankford Township, to Elmer and Edith (Finhart) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church where he was a lifelong member.

On April 5, 1942, he married Lorraine Thorson at the Lutheran Parsonage in Adams.

Kenneth farmed all his life in the Grand Meadow area and also worked at IBM in Rochester for 27 years. He volunteered for meals on wheels and several other community activities. He served on the church council, the Grand Meadow City Council for 10 years and also drove school bus for the Grand Meadow School district for a few years.

He was a member of the Golden Age Club in Grand Meadow and enjoyed playing cards and horseshoes.

Survivors include wife, Lorraine, Grand Meadow; daughters, Donna (Connie) Hoffman, Byron; Sheryl (Bob) Fischer, Rosemont; Linda (Pat) Cummings, Rochester; Annette (Eric) Hjelter, Rochester; son, Brian (Debbie) Johnson, Grand Meadow; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, DeVera Yonkovich, Onalaska, Wis.; brother, Roger (Ila) Johnson, Grand Meadow.

Robert Anson Jones

1922-2002

Robert Anson Jones, 80, of Austin, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at the Stewartville Care Center.

He was born March 22, 1922, in San Diego, Calif., to Robert and Myrtle (Pease) Jones. He graduated from Sweetwater High School.

In 1940, he served with the California National Guard, was medically discharged, and then served in the Pacific during World War II with civilian construction units.

After the war, he worked as a carpenter, retiring in 1983. During the later part of his career, he developed and taught carpentry and home repair at Grossmont College in San Diego.

He was married to Frances Hying from 1942 until her death in 1981.

He married Lillian Bartell on Sept. 1, 1982, in El Cajon, Calif. They lived in California until 1987, when they moved to Missouri. They moved to Austin in 2001.

Bob loved to spend time with his family, camping and fishing and joining his children's interests. He was a Boy Scout leader for over 15 years.

He and Lillian spent their 20 years together traveling and building their own home. In recent years, Bob learned and enjoyed wood carving.

Survivors include wife, Lillian Jones, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Kathleen Jones, Rochester; Jim and Roberta Jones, San Diego, Calif.; John Jones, Las Vegas, Nev.; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Terry Marshall, Missouri; Patty and Dennis Small, Black Hawk, S.D.; stepchildren, Donald and Karen Bartell, Chicago, Ill.; Joyce and Jim Getchell, Austin; 30 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters, Hazel Moore, San Diego, Calif.; Edith Eubanks, Yuma, Ariz.; nieces and nephews.

Rodney David Kasten

1968-2002

Rodney David Kasten, 33, of Racine, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, of injuries from a motorcycle accident.

He was born July 9, 1968, in Austin, to David and Sharon Kasten.

On July 29, 1995, he married Kimberly Orke. They later divorced. He was a self-employed truck driver.

Survivors include his parents; son, Riley Kasten, Byron; sister, Rhonda (David) Tuck, Richmond, Va.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers.

Madonna K. Murphy

1921-2002

Madonna K. Murphy, 80, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

She was born on September 26, 1921, in Austin, to Wilfred and Calista (Hoban) Murphy.

She was an active member of St. Augustine Church and the Rosary Society. She volunteered as a hospital communion distributor and at local nursing homes. She also gave rides to many shut-ins. She enjoyed walking at the YMCA and spending time with family and friends. She was a retired employee of Hormel Foods Corporate Office.

Survivors include brothers, Loren Murphy, Rose Creek; William Murphy, Lyle; sister, Loretta and Chuck Lenton, Robbinsdale; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Marcella Murphy.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., today, June 14, 2002, at the funeral home, with a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and 6:30 p.m. wake service, and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Gayle R. Larson, 67, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at the Austin Medical Center

She was born February 25, 1935 in Ft. Atkinson, Wis., to Elmer and Marjorie (Williams) Klagge.

On June 27, 1956 she married Robert W. Larson at the Methodist Church in Mason City, Iowa. She was a homemaker, loved playing Bingo and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband Robert Larson, Austin; daughters Debra (Tom) Stevens, Austin, Jill (Dennis) Getchell, Pagland, S.C., Melonee (Marcus) Killman, Austin; six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; step-mother Marguerite Klagge, Austin; step-brother Jeff Houston, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father.

Garry Dean Lastine

1947-2002

Garry Dean Lastine, 54, of Owatonna, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, died on Sunday, June 16, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

He was born Nov. 12, 1947, in Austin, to Martin and Hilda (Fetterly) Lastine. He graduated from Austin High School and served in the Marines from 1965 to 1969.

Garry and Suzanne Tschida were married May 17, 1968. Garry was employed at Owatonna Tool Co. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working around home.

Survivors include wife, Suzanne, Owatonna; children, Michelle (Rob) Tracy, Red Wing; Bradley (Jeri) Lastine, Austin; Jennifer (Kris) Lau, Owatonna; six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepsister, Lois.

Visitation: One hour before the service on Friday.

Rev. Rudolph H. Marquardt

1912-2002

Rev. Rudolph H. Marquardt, 90, of Austin, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 11, 1912, in Leola, S.D. He attended high school and junior college in St. Paul, graduating from Concordia College in St. Paul and in 1936, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo. While in seminary in St. Louis, Mo., he met Gertrude Lang and they married on April 15, 1939.

He was ordained and installed as pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, Pierre, S.D. in February 1938. He later was the pastor at congregations in Deadwood, S.D. and in Rapid City, S.D. During that time, he served on the South Dakota District Board of Directors for the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod from 1951 to 1957 and served as vice president of the district from 1957 to 1962. In August 1962, he became pastor at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Austin where he served until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1978.

He was a member of the Minnesota South Board of Directors for the Lutheran Church from 1967 to 1973 and vice president of the district from 1973 to 1976. He was an advocate of parochial education and started an elementary school at Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City, S.D. He also helped the expansion and building of a new school at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Austin.

After his retirement, he served as vacancy pastor for Holy Cross until 1980. He also filled vacancies at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waltham, Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brownsdale and at Peace and St. John's Lutheran Churches in Claremont.

Survivors include wife, Gertrude; children, James (Charlotte), Winchester, Va.; Clarence (Jody), Washington; Mark (Rebecca), Chapel Hill, N.C.; Arlis (Steve) Clennon, Austin; 10 grandchildren.

Angeline B. (Lerum) Mathieu

1910-2002

Angeline B. Mathieu, 92, formerly of Austin, died Monday, June 10, 2002 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, S.D.

She was born on April 2, 1910, in Ellendale to Charles and Tillie (Torgerson) Lerum. She graduated from Ellendale High School in 1928. She attended St. Paul Secretarial College, graduating in 1932.

On June 30 1932 she married William Mathieu in Sisseton, So. Dak. They owned and operated two cafes. She also worked as a telephone operator, a dispatcher for a cab and ambulance service, a clerk at JCPenny's and Cedar Valley Work Shop in Austin as a payroll time keeper.

She lived in Austin until she retired in 1989, moving to Aberdeen, S.D. She attended First United Methodist Church. She was an avid Yahtzee player, enjoyed Bingo, cards, traveling and attending Bible study.

Survivors include daughters Joanne Johnson, Irvine, Calif., Janice Losinger, Aberdeen, S.D., Renee (Joel) Dahlen, Mason City, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Orville Lerum and sister Ione Lerum.

Visitation: 1 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Goldie V. (nee Moore) Murphy

1905-2002

Goldie V. Murphy, 96, of Austin, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester.

She was born Sept. 18, 1905, in Castalia, Iowa, to Orley and Emma (Olson) Moore. She was baptized in Chester, Iowa.

She became a Catholic convert and on Sept. 24, 1922, married Thomas J. Murphy in Mason City, Iowa.

The couple farmed eight miles from Lime Springs. In 1937, they moved to Austin and both began work for the George A. Hormel Company. Hired in 1944, Goldie worked in the Vienna Fresh Sausage and Dry Sausage Departments. In 1969, she retired with 27 and one half years of employment.

Survivors include son, Joseph and Audrey Murphy, Austin; daughters, Madeline and William Ashton Jr., Austin; Rosemary and Max Crowley, Austin; son-in-law, Robert Erickson, Austin; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; sister, Violet Denelsbeck, Minnetonka.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas J. Murphy; daughter, Mary Jane Erickson; sisters, Flossie, Sylvia and Pearl; brothers, Orville and Louis.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 19, 2002, with a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. rosary and Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Goldie V. Murphy, 96, of Austin, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester.

She was born Sept. 18, 1905, in Castalia, Iowa, to Orley and Emma (Olson) Moore.

On Sept. 24, 1922, she married Thomas J. Murphy in Chester, Iowa. The couple farmed in York Township and moved to Austin in 1937. Goldie worked for Hormel Foods for 27 and one half years starting in December of 1944 until 1970.

Survivors include son, Joseph and Audrey Murphy, Austin; daughters, Madeline and William Ashton, Austin; Rosemary and Max Crowley, Austin; son-in-law, Robert Erickson, Austin; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; sister, Violet Denelsbeck, Minneapolis.

1926-2002

Howard R. "Gus" Narveson, 76, of Minneapolis, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Our Lady of Good Council Nursing Home, St. Paul.

He was born in Browns Valley on March 6, 1926, to Nels and Ella (Akeson) Narveson. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a technician in the manufacturing industry.

Survivors include brothers, Clayton and Maurice; nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

She was born in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota. She moved from Minneapolis to Florida in 1978. She was a homemaker and member of Unity Church of Clearwater. She was an avid bridge player.

Tillie (Bremer) Oldenkamp

1918-2002

Tillie Oldenkamp, 84, of Oakland, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.

Oldenkamp was born May 14, 1918, to Haring (Henry) and Sieberrige (Sadie Dykstra) Bremer in Ocheyedan Township, Melvin, Iowa. She attended rural schools in North Dakota. On Dec. 15, 1937, Tillie married Bert H. Oldenkamp in Marion, N.D. The couple lived on a farm in the Oakland area for more than 37 years. She worked at the Minnesota Sheriff's Boys Ranch from 1966 to 1978. She was a member of the Oakland Lutheran Church, the Church Circle and WELCA. Oldenkamp enjoyed reading, quilting and the neighborhood bible study.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Sadie and Kenneth Andersen, Lyle; Lillian and Neil Johnson, Sargeant;

Julia C. (Halvorson) Peterson

1911-2002

Julia C. Peterson, 90, of Osseo, and formerly of Austin, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at North Memorial Medical Center, Robbinsdale.

She was born Dec. 21, 1911, to Holver and Clara (Lestrud) Halvorson, in Moscow, where she grew up.

On May 12, 1930, she married Francis Peterson.

Julia lived in Austin until 1974, when she moved to Buffalo. She later moved to New Hope where she remained until December 1998, when she moved into the Brookshire Residence in Osseo.

She is a past member of Grace Lutheran Church, Austin. She was a volunteer at the Salvation Army.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Irene and Bert Johnson, Brainerd; son, Lavern Peterson, Elk River; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, in April 1968; seven brothers; two sisters.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the funeral home.

Kenneth L. Quandt

1918-2002

Kenneth Quandt, 84, of Grand Meadow, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

He was born June 1, 1918, in Pleasant Valley Township, to Gustav and Amanda (Schuelke) Quandt. He attended schools in Rochester and Grand Meadow, but was forced to quit early because of the depression.

When he was 18, he worked as a truck driver and did general construction.

In October 1941, he joined the United States Army and trained in Oklahoma, traveling overseas in 1942. He landed in Africa and fought in Sicily, Italy, Anzio, France and Germany for a total of 511 days of combat. In 1945, he was honorably discharged and returned to Minnesota where he drove taxi in Rochester for about a year before returning to the farm near Grand Meadow. In 1946, he purchased his own farm and began farming on his own.

He met Leora Durhman Raustad and they were married in Sioux Falls, S.D. in January 1947.

Kenneth was involved in the community, serving six years as county assessor, two years as the church treasurer, four years on the town board and three years on the school board. He was chairman of the Farmers Union, Democratic Farm Labor, township chairman, served as chairman and member of the ASCS committee and served on the draft board for many years. He was also a member of the Grand Meadow American Legion and the Stewartville American Legion. He served as Commander for one year, was a county adjutant, and managed the American Legion Club for 20 years. In 1965, he was sworn in as Post Master for Grand Meadow. At age 64, he retired and farmed in partnership with his son, William.

Survivors include wife, Leora, Grand Meadow; sons, Edward (Cheryl) Raustad, Harmony; James Quandt, Brooklyn Park; William (Tami) Quandt, Grand Meadow; daughter, Marilyn (Pat) Murphy, Barry; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Rupkalvis, Rochester.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister

Stella S. (nee Frein) Rauen

1916-2002

Stella S. Rauen, 85, of Adams, Minnesota, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at Adams Health Care Center.

She was born Oct. 28, 1916, in Stacyville, Iowa, to Math and Elizabeth (Gilles) Frein. She attended Visitation Catholic School in Stacyville, Iowa. She did housekeeping for various families and worked at Hormels. She also worked at Mike and Bills Bar in Adams.

On July 18, 1939, she married Mike H. Rauen at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams.

Her hobbies include baking, reading, house cleaning, growing plants and flowers, being a volunteer for the Red Cross and the Adams Health Care Center. She was a member of the Adams American Legion Auxiliary, Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women and Adams Health Care Auxiliary.

Survivors include sisters and brother-in-law, Sister Irene Frein, Dubuque, Iowa; Katherine Lechowit, Glendale, Ariz.; Joann Heimer, Adams; Gertrude and Edward May, Adams; brother and sister-in-law, John and Flossy Frein, Austin; brother-in-law, Ernie Loecher, Austin; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in January 2002, three sisters and a brother.

Duane M. Regenscheid, age 53, formerly of Austin, died at his home in Rochester.

He was born Aug. 19, 1948, in Mont-gomery to Walter and Darline (Schabert) Regenscheid.

He worked in Research and Development for Hormel Foods.

Mildred Anna Rensink, 89, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at her home.

She was born July 28, 1912, in Garner, Iowa, to Joseph and Agnes (Hejlik) Kudej.

On Nov. 9, 1937, she married Edward W. Rensink in Garner, Iowa. A lifelong Austin resident, Mildred cooked for the Other Place Restaurant, now Jerry's Other Place. She belonged to St. Augustine Catholic Church and enjoyed flowers and playing bingo.

Survivors include sons, Marvin (Nancy) Rensink, Pleasanton, Calif.; Larry (Kay) Rensink, Naperville, Ill.; Kenny (Deann) Rensink, Austin; daughters, Shirley (Gary) King, Bella Vista, Ark.; Linda Darling, Springfield, Mo.; Marlene (John) Anker, Austin; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; friends and relatives.

Harold H. Rich

1915-2002

Harold H. Rich, 87, of LeRoy, died Friday, June 14, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

He was born May 3, 1915 in rural North Loup, Neb., to Murray and Dora Rich. He attended school in rural North Loup and also attended the University of Nebraska for two years. On Jan. 29, 1941, he married Norma Hall in Ord, Neb., After their marriage they moved to Toulon, Ill., and then to Minneapolis in December 1941 where he was employed by the Northern Ordinance Co.

In June 1946 they moved to LeRoy, Minn., where they opened a Gamble Store. He later started a fertilizer business and was the first dealer of anhydrous ammonia in the area. He also started the bowling alley in LeRoy. Rich and his son opened Rich Grain Service in Chester, Iowa.

Harold and his wife enjoyed spending their winters in Mesa, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife, Norma, LeRoy; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Sharon, LeRoy; daughter, Diane Domino, Lakeville, Minn., seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, one son-in-law, three brothers and two sisters.

Florence (nee Perkins) Schmidt

1931-2002

Florence Perkins Schmidt, 69, of Upland, Calif., and formerly of Austin, died Nov. 21, 2001, at Specialty Hospital of Southern California.

She was born Dec. 22, 1931, in Tremplo (SIC), Wis. to Helen and Bernard Perkins. She attended schools in Chatfield and Austin. While attending school, she worked for the telephone company and later transferred to the telephone company in Minneapolis where she met and married Alfred Schmidt. The couple traveled many places including Florence's favorite, Hawaii.

1943-2002

William George Shatek, 59, of Austin, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at his home.

He was born January 27, 1943 in Austin to William G. and Eva (Wilson) Shatek.

A graduate of Austin High School, he lived in Chaska from 1962 until 1982 when he returned to Austin where he lived until his death.

He loved to fish and hunt and spending time with his friends.

Survivors include daughters Debbie and Melody, South Carolina, Michelle, Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren; brothers, Dennis Shatek, Austin, David Shatek, Chaska; sister Cindy Shatek, Chaska; nieces and nephews.

Ruth P. (nee Bumgarner) Sheedy

1918-2002

Ruth P. Sheedy, 83, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

She was born Nov. 2, 1918, in Austin, to Roy and Mary (Perl) Bumgarner. She graduated from Austin High School in 1937 and attended St. Catherine College in St. Paul.

On Oct. 11, 1950, she married Edward J. Sheedy at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin.

Ruth was employed by Austin State Bank and the Mower County Treasurer's Office prior to her marriage. She was a lifelong active member of St. Augustine Church and was a member of St. Ann's Unit and the Rosary Society. She also volunteered many years at the Philomathian Book and Gift Store in Austin.

In November 2000, she moved to Sacred Heart Assisted Living and in May 2002, she moved into Sacred Heart Care Center.

Survivors include husband, Edward J. Sheedy, Austin; son, John Sheedy, Albert Lea; daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Daniel Carroll, Eau Claire, Wis.; sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Kenneth Welken, Austin; sisters-in-law: Beatrice Sheedy, Austin; Eleanor Vandenberg, Los Angeles, Calif.; an aunt, nieces, nephews and cousins.

William J. Stegeman

1907-2002

William J. Stegeman, 94, of Austin, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center.

He was born Aug. 31, 1907, in Wolsey, S.D., to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Stegeman. He graduated from Wolsey High School, Wolsey, S.D., in 1925. In 1929, he graduated from Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm as a teacher.

In 1930, he married Esther Moeller in Wolsey, S.D.   He was a teacher and band director for a few years. He was a Piano Technician and Tuner until his retirement at 85. He invented the intonation trainer. He enjoyed playing the flute, drawing cartoons and building model airplanes.

He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Austin Noon Lions Club and Piano Technicians Guild Incorporated.

Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Richard and Evelyn Stegeman, Rockford, Ill.; Dr. Charles Stegeman, Mendota Heights; daughters and sons-in-law, June and Harlan Nelson, Austin; Violet and Richard Delhanty, Coral Springs, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

His parents, wife, and brother, Walter Stegeman, preceded him in death.

Kevin L. Vogland, 50, formerly of Austin, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at his home in Inver Grove Heights.

He was born June 6, 1952 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Dale and Patricia (Grapes) Vogland.

On August 2, 1972 he married Ramona Billadeau in San Francisco, California. He was retired from the United States Navy. He was a freelance writer.

Betty Joyce (Selle) Thomas

1924-2009

Betty Joyce Thomas, 85, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday afternoon, December 7, 2009 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.

She was born Aug. 20, 1924 to William and Hazel (Dell) Selle in Dodge Center, Minnesota, where she grew up.

She married Ronald R. Thomas. After living in Park Rapids for five years, they moved to Austin in 1947. They had three children and were later divorced. Betty was business manager for AFL-CIO Local #6578 for a number of years. A member of First Congregational Church, she also belonged to VFW Auxiliary and Eagles. In her younger years, she played softball. She enjoyed her family and two "furry" grandchildren, Sam and Casey. Betty was always handing out treats.

She is survived by her sons, Bryan Thomas of Austin, Greg (Marilyn) Thomas of Kasson; a daughter, Sandra Graham of Colorado; six grandchildren, Jason, Steven and Jamie Thomas; Damon, Dustin and Darin Knudson; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, LaVerne "Colonel" Selle of Rochester and James "Fearless" Selle of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Walter "Hogan," Robert "Count," Edward "Hot Rod," Everett "Emmett" and Lloyd "Slid."

Funeral services will be held at First Congregational Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10 with the Rev. George Toschak officiating. Visitation will be at Worlein Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 9 and one hour before the service at the church. Dorothy (nee Neisen) Winkels

1920-2009

Dorothy (Neisen) Winkels, 89, of Stewartville, Minnesota, died Dec. 7, 2009, at a hospital in Robbinsdale, Minnesota.

She was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Black Hawk County, Iowa, to William and Mary Neisen and attended rural schools in Rose Creek and later Austin. She worked at the Hormel meatpacking plant before she was married to Alexander Winkels in Austin. Together they had seven children, who were raised in Stewartville.

Dorothy was the distribution manager of the Rochester Post-Bulletin delivery in the city of Stewartville in the 1960s and 1970s, where many a paper boy earned their first income by coming to her home at 309 N. Main Street to pick up their bundle of papers and deliver them. She was a fantastic cook and had many recipes that are still used today by her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed quilting and playing cards, and had an especially green thumb with her violets and ferns.

After her husband died in 1988, she volunteered with food preparation at Dorothy Day House in Rochester. She also was an active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and its Prayer Group and Rosary Society.

Survivors include her children, Louise Taylor of Elgin, Mildred (David) Frie of La Crescent, Rita (George) Marx of Maple Grove, David (Deb) Winkels of Altoona, Iowa, Philip (Tilia) Winkels of St. Paul, Bernard (Beth) Winkels of Stewartville, and Thomas (Rose) Winkels of Independence. She is further survived by 26 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was an infant daughter, Mary Jennifer; her husband Al (former Stewartville postmaster); her parents; and her five brothers and sisters.

A Mass of Celebration will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 12, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Stewartville. Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 11, at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home, Stewartville, from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Catholic Charities through the Diocese of Winona, or St. Bernard Catholic Church.

He is survived by his sons Daniel (Kelly) Price and Jason (Amber) Price, and by grandchildren Katherine, Ethan, and Aubrey.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Katherine.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at 10 a.m. at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Austin.
