Jeanette (Williamson) Tapp

1915-2001

Jeanette Tapp, 86, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

She was born June 1, 1915, in Freeborn County, to Joseph and Selma (Lee) Williamson. She was baptized and confirmed in Red Oak Grove.

She married Maynard Tapp on Sept. 17, 1941, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Lyle.

She worked as a clerk for JC Penney, Tempo and Queen Fashions.

Her interests included crafts, sewing, quilt making, gardening, canning, camping, fishing and playing cards.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Annette Tapp, Austin; daughter, Diane Sabanish, Austin; three grandsons; a great-granddaughter; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Syrlene Williamson, Austin; Kenneth and Margaret Williamson, Austin; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Maxine Miller, Blooming Prairie; Sylvia and Clayton Swenson, Blooming Prairie; Lorraine and Merlin Turvold, Belvidere, Ill.; sister-in-law, Lorene Williamson, Blooming Prairie; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death be her husband, Maynard Tapp; and three brothers, Jens, Lawrence and Orville Williamson.

Service: 2 p.m.Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at Our Savior's Church with Rev. Don Deines officiating. Casket bearers will be Chad Sabanish, Jamie Tapp, Mike Tapp, Tom Swenson, Terry Miller and David Williamson.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Interment: Greenwood Cemetery in Brownsdale.

Bernard Floyd Simpson

1920-2001

Bernard "Bernie" Floyd Simpson, age 81, of Austin, died Monday, September 24, 2001, at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born February 24, 1920, in Duncombe, Iowa, to Albert "Bert" and Ida Mae (Porter) Simpson.

Bernie graduated from Duncombe High School and the University of Iowa with a BA degree. He married Norma Mickelson May 3, 1941, in Kansas City. Norma died Aug. 13, 1988.

Joining the US Navy, he served aboard the USS Blatchford in the Pacific during World War II.

After his discharge he was employed at George A. Hormel & Company where he worked in fresh pork sales until his retirement in 1981.

An active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, American Legion, VFW, Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, Bernie also enjoyed hunting, fishing and pool.

Survivors include son, Jay E. (Cathy) Simpson, Eden Prairie; daughter, Joy (Jeffrey) Hanson, Duluth; four grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and seven siblings.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, with the Rev. Orlen Mandsager officiating and at 3 p.m. Thursday at Washington Lutheran Church in Duncombe, Iowa with The Reverend David Deckard officiating.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. at Worlein Funeral Home Wednesday and one hour before the services at the churches on Thursday.

Interment: Washington Lutheran Cemetery in Duncombe, Iowa.

Flag presentation will be by American Legion Post No. 91.

James A. Silbaugh, Sr.

1927-2001

James A. Silbaugh, Sr., 74, of Austin, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born July 20, 1927, in Austin, to A. R. and Helen (Helgeson) Silbaugh.

He graduated from Austin High School in 1945. At the age of 16 he joined the United States Navy. In 1950 he received his diploma from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.

He married Marie Stephens July 2, 1960, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

After 40 years with the George A. Hormel Company he retired as group vice president.

He enjoyed golf, fishing and flying his airplane. He was a member of Elks Lodge 414, the American Legion Post #91, the Austin YMCA, St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the Austin Country Club and Austin Aeroflight.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Silbaugh, Austin; daughters and son-in-law, Rosie Stallman, Indianapolis, Ind.; Helen and Greg Jahr, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Tracy Silbaugh, Jr., Superior, Colo.; five grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Adalia Silbaugh, Lyle; a niece and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Service: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kristin K. Wee officiating. Organist will be Neal Erickson and the soloist will be Mark Roberts. Casket bearers will be Ron Plath, Dave Larson, Stan Kerber, Tony Alonso, Jim Phillips and Mike Oliver.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Tuesday and one hour before the service at the church Wednesday. There will be no reviewal.

Interment: Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mona.

Memorials: The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Catherine Bantes

1906-2001

Catherine Bantes, age 95, of Grand Meadow, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Meadow Manor Nursing Home.

She was born on February 14, 1906, in Mower County, Minnesota, to Stephen and Anna (Adams) Bantes. She attended school in Meyer, Iowa and Johnsburg. She worked as a housekeeper in Austin and later lived and worked on the family farm. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, gardening and baking bread.

She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg.

For the past three years she has been a resident of the Meadow Manor Nursing Home in Grand Meadow.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Alfred Mullenbach, Adams; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephew; great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers; sister; and nephew, John Mullenbach.

Service: 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at St. Johns Catholic Church in Johnsburg with the Rev. Gregory Leif officiating. There will also be 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. prayer service on Wednesday at the Adams Funeral Home. Casket bearers will be David Wilberding, Harvey Heimer, Nathan Mullenbach, David Kirtz, Jim Mullenbach and Melvin Thome.

Visitation: 3 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday and 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Adams Funeral Home.

Interment: St. Johns Catholic Cemetery in Johnsburg.

Ella Bergland

1899-2001

Ella Bergland, age 101, of LeRoy, died on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2001, at the Adams Health Care Center where she had resided for about a year.

She was born on Dec. 14, 1899, to George and Lena Bergland near LeRoy.

She attended District 63 rural school, LeRoy High School and Mankato Teachers College. She enjoyed working with children and worked in several rural schools before teaching in Fillmore and Jackson, Minn. and Alta Vista, Iowa. The majority of her teaching was in Austin and LeRoy. While at LeRoy she served as the elementary principal for nine years. She also taught Sunday School in several churches in LeRoy including the Bethany Bible Church in LeRoy.

When her teaching years were over, she retired to her rural farm home where she remained until about a year ago. She liked to read, sew and especially liked working in her flower garden in the summertime.

Survivors include her brother, Rev. George and his wife Viola Bergland, LeRoy; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and three brothers.

Service: 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church in LeRoy with the Rev. George Bergland officiating.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in LeRoy on Monday and one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.

Interment: Bethany Lutheran Cemetery in rural LeRoy.

Cecil Lawrence Breczinski

1913-2001

Cecil Lawrence Breczinski age 87, of Austin, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

He was born Oct. 21, 1913 in Marshall, Minn., to Paul and Mary (Frisch) Breczinski.

Cecil attended school in the Marshall area. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from March 19, 1942, until Nov. 15, 1945. Duty included the 420th AAFBU at March Field, Calif. attaining the rank of sergeant.

After the war, Cecil farmed near Marshall. He moved to Austin in 1968 and married Rose Mary "Rose" Monette at St. Augustine Catholic Church on July 13, 1968.

An active member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, Cecil worked at Streater Store Fixtures in Albert Lea until 1978.

Survivors include wife, Rose Breczinski of Austin; sister, Eileen St. Aubin of Tracy; brothers, Andrew (Anna Mae) Breczinski of Tracy; Everett Breczinski of Marshall; Gordon (Rachel) Breczinski of Marshall; Anthony Breczinski of Bloomington; Julius (Julius) Breczinski of Frederick, Maryland.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Service: 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2001, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin with Father William Becker officiating.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service at church on Tuesday. There is a 5 p.m. KC Rosary and 7 p.m. Parish Vigil service at the funeral home Monday.

Interment: St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Stewartville. Military rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.

Chris E. Crousore

1914-2001

Chris E. Crousore, 86, of Lansing, died Monday, September 10, 2001, at his home.

He was born Dec. 24, 1914, in Ledyard, Iowa to Charles and Ida (Fenton) Crousore. He went to school in Fairmont and married Oma Mae King July 25, 1938, in Estherville, Iowa. The couple lived in Lansing. Chris was a retired employee of Hormel Foods Corporation.

He was a member of the Lansing United Methodist Church and the Ramsey Golf Club.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Scharlene Crousore, Lansing; Deanna and Andrew Weiss, Blooming Prairie; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Lydia Tonne, Granada; Emily and Elmer Weiske, Hanska.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Oma; a grandson, Bruce Weiss; a brother, Harvey Sutton and his sister, Fannie Scearcy.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and one hour before the service on Friday.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Leota (nee Lestrud) "Ote"
DEARMIN

1906-2001

Leota "Ote" Dearmin, age 94, died on Monday, September 17, 2001, at her daughter's home.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1906, in the Newry Township, Freeborn County, to Sena (Andersen) and Sam Lestrud. The third of six children, she was baptized at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church.

She attended school in rural Freeborn County and was awarded many prizes for excellence in drawing and written composition at the county fair.

She married Dale Dearmin in Northwood, Iowa, and raised two daughters. Leota supported herself and her family through employment at Brand Brothers, Hollandale Association and the Corning Store.

Alert, mentally active and an avid reader until her death, she enjoyed quilting, gardening and jigsaw puzzles.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Richard Hart; Nell and Verne McGrand; seven grandchildren; many great- and great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and their wives, Harvey and Clara Lestrud; Willie and Alma Lestrud; Lloyd and Marlys Lestrud; two sisters and their husbands, May and Herb Brand; Louena and Martin Lee.

Service: 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bonnerup Funeral Service.

Interment: Red Oak Grove Cemetery.

Edith (Heimsness) Dugan

1914-2001

Edith Dugan, age 86, of Austin, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home where she was a resident.

She was born Nov. 12, 1914, in Mason City, Iowa and moved to Austin with her family at a young age.

She attended Austin Public Schools and graduated from Austin High School in 1932 where she was involved in G.A.A., the Sentinel and the Austinian, the Quil and Scroll (national journalism club), and the Commercial Club.

On Sept. 29, 1938, she married George Dugan in Austin where they made their home.

Edith worked in the office at the Hormel Company for many years until she and George opened Dugan's Sports Shop in 1946. She continued to share in operating the sporting goods store with George until they retired in 1976.

She was very involved in a variety of civic organizations, serving as a president of Zonta International, a co-founder of the Austin Lioness Club, a president of the Women of the Austin Country Club, D.O.E.S., Business and Professional Women, Cotillion Dance Club, a Girl Scout leader, a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the St. Olaf Auxiliary to name a few.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandsons and well as other family members, traveling, painting, dancing, golfing and playing bridge. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church of Austin.

Survivors include her husband, George Dugan, Austin; daughters, Virginia (Gini) Dugan, Stuttgart, Germany; DiEtte (Deedee) Marx, Austin; two grandsons; sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Sally Dugan) Bachman, Minneapolis; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dorothy (Dugan) and Pete Lade; many other relatives.

She is preceded in death by her brother, Wilbur Heimsness; sisters, Ruth Knoble; Dorothy Burroughs; and Doris Smith.

Service: 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kristin Wee officiating. Casket bearers are Greg Marx, Jeff Marx, Bob Andraschko, Bob Boomgard, Art Dubke and Willie Eppen. Organist is Neil Erickson and the soloist is Coni Nelson.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. There will be no reviewal at the church.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery.

The family prefers memorials to the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank and the Children's Clinic, to Alzheimer's Research or to St. Olaf Church.

Roland P. Erickson

1915-2001

Roland P. "Ronnie" Erickson, 85, of Austin, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 22, 1915, in Austin, to Melvin and Katie (Best) Erickson.

He married Hazel B. Dokken Jan. 7, 1961.

Ronnie enjoyed the outdoors whether it was playing golf, fishing in Canada or pheasant hunting with his Brittney Spaniel, Misty. He also enjoyed dances and his many friends.

He was employed by Hormel Foods for 48 years before retiring.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Erickson, Austin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Tim Marsolek, Alexandria; Jean and Bryan Lorenson, Anchorage, Ala.; five grandchildren; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Russell and Uke Erickson, Kalispell, Mont.; Bob Erickson, Austin; Don and Shirley Erickson, Austin; Kenneth "Billy" and Susan Erickson, Austin; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Bill Zschunke, Austin.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters-in-law, Mary and Jan Erickson.

Service: 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Joe Schularick and Intern Shari Mason officiating. Honorary casket bearers will be Ron Mecklenburg, Ronnie Hanson, Adrian Blake, David Folie, Donald Dokken and Wilford Dokken. Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation: The family will greet friends at a luncheon following the service.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Raymond Gordon Harrington

1925-2001

Raymond Gordon Harrington, age 76, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, from injuries he received in a farm accident.

He was born June 7, 1925, in Red Rock Township, to Verner J. Harrington and Iva Noffsinger Harrington.

They moved from Mayville in March of 1936 to east of Taopi in the Lodi Township. He went to school through the eighth grade in Taopi and quit school to work on the farm.

He married Shirley Jean Boe on Jan. 14, 1947, at the Marshall Lutheran Church. Together, they farmed on the homestead east of Taopi. Shirley died in 1994.

Raymond was actively interested in farming and his horses.

His is survived by one daughter, Linda (Doug) Bergan, Lanesboro; three sons, Michael (Mary) Harrington, LeRoy; Brian (Penny) Harrington, Adams; Douglas (Lisa) Harrington, LeRoy; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Hertel; Viola O'Conner; one brother, Verner "Bud" Faye Harrington, all of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; four brothers, Don, Clifford, Everett and Leonard; and one sister, Evelyn.

Service: 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at LeRoy Lutheran Church with the Rev. Tom Kolden officiating.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Interment: Marshall Lutheran Cemetery near Adams.

Marie (Garvey) Joyce

1902-2001

Marie Joyce, age 98, formerly of Grand Meadow and White Bear Lake, Minn., died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at the Lake Ridge Care Center in Roseville.

She was born Sept. 15, 1902, in Arabia, Neb., to Dennis and Molly Garvey. She married Floyd Joyce.

Survivors include her daughter, Jean and husband Don Reagan, North St. Paul; son, John P. and wife Robin Joyce, Park Forest, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Joan French; one grandchild; one sister; and three brothers.

Service: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at St. Finbarr Catholic Church, in Grand Meadow, with the Rev. Father Russell Scepaniak officiating.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Father Zacharias Fellowship Hall at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 2590 N. Margaret Street and County Road C, North St. Paul, and one hour before the service at the church.

Interment: The church cemetery.

Funeral Home: Mueller Lake Mortuary in White Bear Lake and Hindt -Hutchins Funeral Home in Grand Meadow is in charge of local arrangements.

James B. Juenger II

1978-2001

James B. Juenger II, 23, of Austin, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at his home.

Jim was born July 28, 1978, in Austin, to James and Paulette (Kalland) Juenger.

He graduated from Pacelli High School in 1997 and attended Iowa Community College in Mason City, Iowa. He was a clerk at HyVee Foods.

He enjoyed working with auto stereo installations, bowling and being with family and friends.

Survivors include his father, James Juenger, Austin; sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Mark Lau, Duluth; a nephew; grandparents, Janice and Warren Kelly, Austin; Geraldine Juenger, Austin; aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his mother and his grandfathers.

Service: 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson officiating. Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.

Marilynn (nee Hauck) "Lynn"
KILGORE

1922-2001

Marilynn (Lynn) Kilgore, 79, of Brainerd and formerly of Austin, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Bethany Good Samaritan Care Center in Brainerd.

She was born July 30, 1922, in Fort Madison, Iowa, to Daniel and Margarite (Hayden) Hauck.

She graduated from the Fort Madison High School and was married to Willard Norman Kilgore on Dec. 1, 1945, at the St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Fort Madison.

They resided in Austin where she was employed as a secretary. In 1995 she moved from Austin to the Riverside Villa Apartments in Pine River, Minnesota, and later to the Woodland Village Apartments in Brainerd. She recently moved to the Bethany Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, David and Nancy Kilgore, St. Paul; William and Barbara Kilgore, Alexandria; daughter and son-in-law, Marilynn (Mari) and John (Jack) Rysavy, Brainerd; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia McGuire, Fort Madison, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Shirley Hauck, Fort Madison, Iowa; Thomas and Latisha Hauck, Fort Madison, Iowa; John Hauck, Port Charlotte, Fla.; Ardella Haldorson, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard in 1989; parents; and brothers, Daniel G. and David L. Hauck.

Service: 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Rev. Richard A. Ressler and the Rev. Mary Frances Jones officiating. Organist will be Cynthia Corbly and the casket bearers will be the Kilgore family.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday and one hour before the service on Saturday at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery.

Diane Louise (nee Stevens) Mammenga

1950-2001

Diane Louise Stevens Mammenga, age 51, of St. Paul, formerly of Austin, died on Sunday, at her home, of cancer.

She was born on May 22, 1950, in Rochester. She grew up in and attended Austin High School. She was married and later divorced. She worked for many years as a waitress for the High Forest Truck Stop in Rochester before moving to Park Rapids and graduating from cosmetology school. She drove bus for Metro Transit of St. Paul until the time of her death. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Carrie Mammenga; and a son, Justin, both of St. Paul; one grandson; three sisters, Sharon Tollakson, St. Paul; Marsha Podein, Stewartville; Lisa Dudas, Austin; two brothers, David Stevens, Park Rapids; Alan Stevens, Park Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.

Service: 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at O'Halloran and Murphy Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the funeral home.

Interment: Fairview Cemetery in Oakland, Minn. at a later date.

Ernest Mangnuson

1913-2001

Ernest Mangnuson, age 88, of Austin, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at the Austin Medical Center.

Ernie was born on Feb. 14, 1913, in Doland, S.D., to Martin and Fannie (Ratts) Mangnuson.

He married Evalyn M. Capp on May 10, 1941.

He graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in horticulture. He was the owner and operator of Southern Minnesota Body and Millwork and the Flickertail Restaurant in Austin. He was a veteran of World War II having served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves.

He was an avid bowler, fisherman, cribbage player and hunter.

Iris (nee Hart) Meinhard

1915-2001

Iris Hart Meinhard was born in Delta, Iowa on Dec. 30, 1915, to Earl and Liru (Ewing) Hart.

She grew up in Keota, Iowa and attended Keota schools. She graduated from high school in 1933. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College at Mount Pleasant, Iowa, graduating in 1936 with a major in home economics.

She taught in the high schools of Argyle, Leroy and Cumberland, Iowa, where she met Robert Meinhard. They married on Aug. 23, 1942.

Iris and Bob lived in Grinnell and Fort Dodge, Iowa before moving to Austin where they lived for 22 years. In 1967, they moved to Winona where she has lived for the past 34 years.

A master seamstress, she taught evening classes in sewing and tailoring at the Austin and Winona vocational-technical colleges. She also loved to knit.

Besides sewing, knitting and baking, she loved traveling, camping, bird watching, music and dancing. She and Bob traveled every state in the Union, most of the Canadian provinces, Mexico, the British Isles and Europe. After Bob's retirement, they attended several Elderhotels in California, New Mexico, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Hawaii and Alaska.

She loved ballroom dancing. To preserve and promote ballroom dancing, she was a founder and charter member of the Winona Area Ballroom Dance Club.

She was a member of Alpha Psi Delta, the First Congregational Church, Winona, where she was active in the Women's Fellowship, and the Dorcas Circle, serving president of the Women's Fellowship. She was a charter member of the Hiawatha Valley Civil War Round Table and was secretary and editor of the newspaper for many years.

A favorite organization was P.E.O., where she also served a year as chapter president.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; four children, Sheryl (Chuck) Glade, Worland, N.Y.; Nancy Meinhard (Robert Earley), Cherry Hill, N.J.; Robert (Tuyet) Meinhard, Brooklyn Center, Minn.; Darla Newell (Edward III), Landen, Wyo; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Keith (Maxine) Hart, Hemet, Calif.; Kenneth (Marilee) Hart, Trever, Wis.; and two sisters, Neva (Bruce) Boyer, Morgan Hill, Calif.; Kathryn (Talbert) Tadlock, Keota, Iowa.

Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Rick King officiating.

Visitation: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Interment: Meinhard Cemetery in Troy Grove, Ill.

Funeral Home: Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Clifford J. Monnahan

1923-2001

Clifford J. Monnahan, 78, of Austin, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Comforcare.

He was born Feb. 21, 1923, in Austin, to John and Neva (Manning) Monnahan.

He married Dorothy Dodenhoff at St. Augustin Catholic Church in Austin.

Cliff worked for Hormel Foods and was a retired employee.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Monnahan, Austin; brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Vivian Monnahan, Everly, Iowa; nephews.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Marguerite "Peggy" Monnahan; his brother, Ray Monnahan; an infant brother; and an infant son.

Service: 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at St. Edward's Catholic Church with Father Hubert Boschert officiating. There will also be a 5:30 p.m. wake service today at Mayer Funeral Home.

Lizzie J. Moon

1909-2001

Lizzie J. Moon, age 92, of Rochester, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Bear Creek Care and Rehab, of congestive heart failure.

She was born July 27, 1909, in Decorah, Iowa and raised in Rice, Minnesota.

She married Rolland C. Moon on Sept. 19, 1926, in Mower County. Rolland died in 1986. Following her marriage, she lived in the Elton and Spring Valley areas. She moved to Rochester in 1943 and has lived there since.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Zumbro Lutheran Church since 1944.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty L. Moon, Rochester; sister, Rose Sween, Merryville, Calif.; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son, five brothers and one sister.

Service: 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Zumbro Lutheran Church Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Vogt officiating.

Visitation: one hour before the service at the church.

Interment: Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Memorial are prefered to the American Cancer Society and the Capital Fund Campaign at Zumbro Lutheran Church.

MURPHY

1932-2001

Carmen M. Murphy, age 69, of Austin, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center, in Austin, due to complications of ALS.

She was born July 30, 1932, in Winona, Minn., to Walter and LaVita (Erdman) Burfeind. They lived on a farm near Stockton, Minn. Later, they moved to Wisconsin where she grew up on farms near Hillpoint and Reedsburg.

Carmen attended St. Pauls Lutheran and Prairie View Schools. She moved to Austin in 1950. She married Fred Murphy on Nov. 24, 1951, at Zion Lutheran Church in LaValle, Wis.

In Austin, she had been employed at the Normandy Cafe, the Piggly Wiggly, Weyerhauser and St. Olaf Hospital where she worked for over 27 years and retired in 1998.

She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Austin, an active member of the Senior Citizens Center and an avid card player.

She loved her flowers and enjoyed her family.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Jay Stromme, Casco, Wis.; Jan and Brian Sorenson, Austin; Mary and Bob Shada, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Dana and Laura Murphy, Cheney, Wash.; Randy and Lori Murphy, Austin; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother and sisters-in-law, Mary Burfeind, Waunakee, Wis.; Lyle and Betty Burfeind, Wonewoc, Wis; sisters and brother-in-law, Audrey Schaefer, Reedsburg, Wis.; Ruth and Kenny Opelt, Neilsville, Wis.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred in 2001; and her brother, Rueben.

Ronald G. Nelson

1944-2001

Ronald G. Nelson, age 57, of Stockton, California, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, August 22, 2001, in Austin.

He was born June 9, 1944, in Austin, to Kenneth P. and Gladys I. (Mortensen) Nelson. He married Mary L. Reagan at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Rose Creek, on June 4, 1966. Ron was an office manager and controller for Hormel Foods in Stockton, Calif. and has been employed by Hormel Foods for 34 years.

He was an active member in Presentation Catholic Church, Ducks Unlimited and the National Rifle Association. He was an avid outdoor sportsman and enjoyed many activities such as camping, hunting, fishing, boating and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Nelson, of Stockton, Calif.; three daughters and sons-in-law: Denise M. Nelson, of Stockton, Calif., Deanna and Dean Davis, of Stockton, Calif., Sara and Daniel Davis, of Stockton, Calif.; his mother, Gladys Nelson, of Austin; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Coralie and Dayton Rayman, of Glenville, Linda and Jim Lind, of Rose Creek; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Connie Nelson, of Austin; mother-in-law, Genevieve Reagan, of Rose Creek.

He is preceded in death by his father, Kenneth P. Nelson and his father-in-law, Bernard D. Reagan.

Service: was 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Greg Leif officiating. There will also be a 7 p.m. wake service at Mayer Funeral Home on Monday. Ronald Noble, 71, of Austin, died Thursday, September 20, 2001, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

He was born on August 17, 1930, in Austin to Hannible and Katherine (Rowland) Noble. He married Irene M. Penkava Aug. 22, 1959, in Austin. He served in the United States Navy and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf.

He was a member of the Moose, Eagles, and the American Legion. He was a retired employee of Hormel Foods.

Survivors include his wife, Irene, Austin; a son, Darwin Noble, Austin; a daughter, Connie and Rick Willmott, Witten, S.D.; four grandchildren; three brothers, Roger and Geraldine Noble, Austin; Robert J. Beverly Ann Parmenter age 47, of Austin, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the home of a friend in Austin.

She was born Oct. 4, 1953, in Austin, to Norman Opsahl and June Camerer. Beverly graduated from Austin High School. She was a foster parent and counselor to many children as well as working at the Boy's Ranch. She was a member of A.A. and Grace Lutheran Church in Austin.

Survivors include her parents, June Camerer and Norman Opsahl, Austin; daughter, Margaret Getchell, Phoenix, Ariz.; son Jeff Parmenter and wife Pamela, Mound; three grandchildren; sisters, Lu Ann Morgan, Austin; Renae Simonson and husband Darin, Austin; brothers, Rick Opsahl and wife Jolie, Neola, Utah; Gary Opsahl and wife Melissa, Alden; nieces and nephews.

Major Eugene Alvin Paulson, age 76, of San Antonio, Texas, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001.

He was born March 14, 1925, in Austin, Minn., to Alvin O. and Frances (Schumacher) Paulson.

He was retired from the United Stated Army.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth F. Paulson; son, Derick Paulson; daughter, Stephanie Flores, all of San Antonio; sister, Beverly A. (Richard) Krebsbach, Albert Lea; nephew and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronald Dean; and wife, Laura.

May E. Pollock, age 82, of Lansing, Minnesota, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

She was born Nov. 23, 1918, in Willen, Manitoba, Canada, to John and Vanetta (Waldie) Latimer.

She attended school in Canada. As a young woman, May enjoyed traveling both domestic and abroad.

She married Harold Pollock on Nov. 13, 1962, in Owatonna, Minn. Together they farmed on his family farm east of Lansing. Later, the couple moved into the town of Lansing to live.

She attended Lansing United Methodist Church and was an active member of the Senior Citizens Center in Austin.

She is survived by her brother, Wilford Latimer, Miniota, Manitoba, Canada; and cousin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Harold.

Service: 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Lansing United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Tamke officiating. Music will be by Kris Allas. Casket bearers will be Charles Klock, Harold Boverhius, William Bailey, Susan Marek, Sara Miller and David Jondal.

Marvin A. Prescher

1935-2001

Marvin A. Prescher, 66, of Austin, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 24, 1935, in Elgin to Leo and Sylvia (Giem ) Prescher.

He graduated from Elgin High School in 1953. He served in the Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956.

He married Jane Lorius Sept. 11, 1971, in Dell Rapids, S.D. The couple moved to Austin that year and have lived here ever since.

Marvin was an independent contractor and laid ceramic tile for many homes in Austin.

He worked at the Mower County Courthouse for over 20 years and retired in 1998. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Austin Post No. 91 American Legion and Austin Eagles Club.

Survivors include children, Pam Anderson, Edina; Mark and Dana Mills, Minneapolis; Teri and Dan Webley, Beloit, Wis.; Linda and Joel Eichenbaum, Beloit, Wis.; four grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard and Donna Prescher, Kasson; (twin) Maynard and Loveta Prescher, Jacksonville, Ariz.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and Eddie Scholzen, Fridley; Phyllis and Bob Morem, Scottsdale, Ariz.; nieces and nephews.

1908-2001

Christina C. Reinartz, age 93, of Adams, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at the Adams Health Care Center.

She was born April 30, 1908, in Adams, to Nicholas and Mary (Bissen) Schmitz.

She was a graduate of Austin High School. She married August Reinartz on Jan. 23, 1929, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams. They farmed in the Rose Creek, Austin and Adams area until 1962 when they moved into the town of Adams.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Rosary Society, Adams Health Care Auxiliary and the Jolly Dozen Club. Her hobbies included gardening, ceramics, knitting and sewing.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Nick and Rosie Reinartz, Adams; Paul and Dorothy Reinartz, Elysian, Minn.; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Chuck Kiefer, Taopi; Kathy and Larry Schaefer, Kasson; Bonnie and Mark Kupka, Charles City, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Helen Schmitz, Adams; Florence Schmitz, Adams; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, August; grandson, Tom Kiefer; two sisters; and seven brothers.

Service: 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Gregory Leif officiating. Organist will be Mary Lou Rysavy. Harold L. Sawyer

1915-2001

Harold L. Sawyer, age 85, of Austin, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 29, 1915, in Hampton, Iowa, to Elmer and Mable (Switzer) Sawyer. Harold began working for the George A. Hormel Company on Sept. 10, 1934 and went on to work for 42 years before retiring.

On Nov. 24, 1936, he married Marcella Miller in Lansing.

He was in CCC Camp and the United States Army and was also a member of the military service clubs in Austin.

Harold was a member of Queen of Angels Church. He enjoyed fishing, auctions, garage sales and being at the Senior Citizen's Center where he played pool and cards.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Pat Sawyer, Goodland, Kan.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Larry Hansen, Austin; Vickie and Jim Berthiaume, Austin; daughter-in-law, Gail Sawyer, Paola, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Gail Enneberg, Austin; sister-in-law, Alice Sawyer, Austin; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, son and brother.

Andrelia (Treef) Sissel

1912-2001

Andrelia Sissel, 89, of Austin, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville, Iowa.

She was born April 2, 1912, in Romania. She came to America in 1939 and married John Treef, was divorced and married Rollo Sissel in 1951.

She attended First Congregational Church, UCC in Austin and was well known for her beautiful crocheting and hand work. She was also a member of the International Club and the Business and Professional Women in earlier days.

Survivors include her stepdaughter, Marilyn Nelson and husband Shirll, Lyle; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a niece.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rollo Sissel.

Service: 2 p.m. today at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor James Peck officiating.

Casket bearers are Marshall Nelson, Bradley Nelson, Barry Nelson, Derek Nelson, Alex Nelson, Laura Nelson.

Paul Ira Trembley

1928-2001

Paul Ira Trembley, 73, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the Meadow Manor Nursing Home in Grand Meadow.

He was born on Jan. 16, 1928, in Delavan, Minn., to Ira and Marie (Willette) Trembley. He graduated from Delavan High School and served in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.

He married Erma Kathileen (Minnich) Deters June 11, 1955, in Austin. He was employed by Austin Utilities for 30 years as a stationary engineer. He was a member of Austin Post #91 American Legion, Olaf B. Damm Post #1216 Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Eagles and a friend of Fellowship United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Kate Trembley, Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Suzette and Rev. Terry Tuinder, Grand Forks, N.D.; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Kenneth and Carol Trembley, Austin; Bradley and Terri Deters, Austin; Max and Joyce Deters, Mount Auburn, Ill.; Randy and Penny Deters, Brownsdale; Doug Deters and Pat Thorpe, Austin; 34 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances Dunne, Fairmont; Doris Paul, Blue Earth; Sister Rochelle, Mankato; Rosemarie and Ron Cox, Apple Valley; Marcy and Robert Henke, Amarillo, Texas; Ethel, Ill.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Karen Trembley, Richmond, Minn.; Rolland Trembley, Shakopee; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister; brother; and grandson, Zachariah Tuinder.

Service: 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at Fellowship United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Lieder officiating. Organist will be Marilyn Sabin. Honorary casket bearers will be Denise Deters, Heather Deters, Tatum Kinder, Katie Nelson, Matthew Deters, Joshua Tuinder, Kimberly Trembley, Tara Deters, Tristin Deters and Kayla Trembley. Casket bearers will be Heath Deters, Mick Deters, Abby Deters, Scott Deters, Trina Miller and Amanda Deters.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the church.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery in Austin with Adams Post #146 American Legion in charge of military rites.

Meorials: The family prefers memorials to Parkinson's Disease.

Everett Raymond Underdahl

1915-2001

Everett Underdahl, age 86, of Austin, died on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at Adams Healthcare Center in Adams, Minnesota.

Everett Raymond Underdahl was born Sept. 7, 1915, in Adams, to Ben and Ingri Underdahl.

He attended school in Adams.

On Sept. 12, 1941, he married Vera Bossart in Cresco, Iowa.

On Jan. 13, 1942, he joined the United States Army serving in the Aleutian Islands and in Europe during World War II. After his discharge on Nov. 10, 1945, Everett returned to Minnesota where he worked at the George A. Hormel Company until his retirement in November of 1977.

He enjoyed traveling and fishing. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Olaf B. Damm Post 1216.

Survivors include his wife, Vera Underdahl, Austin; one son, Steven Underdahl, Coronado, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends.

His parents preceded him in death.

Service: 1 p.m. on Friday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roberta Flood officiating.

Visitation: There is no visitation or reviewal.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Funeral Home: Worlein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles L. Voogd

1919-2001

Charles (Chuck) L. Voogd, age 82, of Austin, died on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at his home.

He was born June 29, 1919, in Dexter, to John and Lillian (Wigham) Voogd.

He attended Austin Public Schools and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945. His B-24 airplane was shot down over Regensburg, Germany on Feb. 22, 1944, and he was a German prisoner of war for over 14 months.

He married Lois Hallman on March 1, 1946, in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Chuck worked as a lineman for the Austin Utilities for 34 years and retired in 1981.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Austin Post #91 American Legion and V.F.W. Post #1216.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Voogd, Austin, daughters and son-in-law, Linda and William Olson, Austin; Vicki Morgan and William Wuerflein, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles W. and Deborah Voogd, Austin; Stephen and Gretchen Voogd, Austin; Brian Voogd, Austin; Roger and Barbara Voogd, Austin; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Mildred Ditlevson, Blooming Prairie; nieces and nephews.

Service: 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Richard A. Ressler officiating. The organist will be Cynthia Corbly.

Austin Post #91 American Legion and V.F.W. Post # 1216 is in charge of military rites.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. There will be no reviewal.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Lavonne (Paulson) Wilkes

1931-2001

Lavonne Wilkes, age 69, of Tyler, Minnesota, died on September 6, 2001.

She was born on Oct. 6, 1931, in Austin, to Hans and Irene (Smith) Paulson.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. She graduated from Austin High School in 1949 and attended Austin Jr. College. She graduated from Mankato State college in 1965 with a B.S. degree in elementary education and a master's degree in 1971 in reading language arts. She taught at Waterville-Elysian elementary school from 1965-1972 and at several elementary schools in Rochester from 1972 until she retired in 1991.

Lavonne and Dean Wilkes were married on April 1, 1951, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends this past spring at their winter home in Bullhead City, Arizona.

Her hobbies included golf, traveling, bowling, handwork and crafts and going to casinos.

She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, the VFW Auxiliary #1216 in Austin, the National Education Association, the ADK (Alpha Delta Kappa) Sorority, RARE (Rochester Area Retired Educators) and a past member of the Rochester Lioness Club.

Survivors include her husband, Dean; three daughters, Pamela (Charles) Hunt, Tyler; Wendy (Kelly) Clarey, Wehpeton, N.D.; Denise (Charles) Karau, Rochester; one son, James Wilkes, Tolleson, Ariz.; five sisters, Charlotte (Roger) Miller, Austin; Arlene Hemphill, Faribault, Minn; Shirley Honsey, Tucson, Ariz.; Irene (Doug) Wilson, Austin; Karen (Ross) Noble, Austin; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hardtke, Rochester; Naomi Paulson, Austin; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Hans; and three sisters, Dorothy, Evelyn and Mildred.

Service: 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at First English Lutheran Church, in Tyler, with Pastor Steve Carmany officiating.

Interment: Riverside Cemetery in Riceville, Iowa, at a later date.

Funeral Home: Utoft-Johansen Funeral and Cremation Services, in Tyler and Lake Benton, Minn., are in charge of arrangements
