Eva Marian (Haugen) Mayer 1916-2001
Eva Marian Mayer, 84, of Adams, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, died
Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at Adams HealthCare Center.
She was born Nov. 29, 1916, in Clark, S.D., to Ole and Mary Haugen.
Eva attended school in South Dakota, and graduated from Winona State Teachers College.
She married Charles D. Mayer June 2, 1942, in Montevideo where they lived until 1951 when they moved to Austin.
She taught school in Elkton and Southland. Charles died April 26, 1976, and Eva retired in 1981.
She enjoyed reading, traveling, and spending time at the cabin in Longville. A member of Grace Lutheran Church, she also belonged to Eastern Star, Minnesota Education Association (MEA), Friendship Force Travel Group, Austin Symphony.
She entered Adams HealthCare Center April 5, 1999.
Survivors include sons, Charles (Candace) Mayer, El Paso, Texas and Paul Mayer, Minneapolis; five grandchildren; sister, Erlis (Robert) Fleming, Watertown, S.D.; brother, Glen Haugen, Sioux Falls, S.D.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Gloyd and Gilman; and sister, Esther Johnson.
Service: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday Sept. 4, 2001, at Grace Lutheran Church, in Austin, with the Rev. Harold Deye officiating. Worlein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation: Friends may call one hour before the service.
Interment: Grandview Cemetery in Austin.

Dennis Michael McNiff 1948-2001
Dennis Michael McNiff, of Crest Hill, Illinois, died Saturday, August
18, 2001, of a heart attack.
He was born July 26, 1948, at Rochester. He is the son of Robert McNiff
and Bette (Jorgensen) Graves and stepmother, Genevieve McNiff, all of Austin.
He lived in Preston until 1952. He attended school at St. Augustine grade
school and Austin High. He worked for Root River Hardwoods Lumber, Rochester
Business Machines and Sharp Electronics, Romeoville, Illinois.
He enjoyed traveling in the United States and made many trips to Japan.
Survivors include his father, mother and stepmother; brother, Douglas, Preston; Jeffrey and Mary, Austin; step-brother, Eugene and Judy Stern, Rochester; step-sister, Denise and Eldon Kenniberg, Maxwell, Iowa; ex-wife, Marcy McNiff, Spring Valley.
He was preceded in death by his only child, Brad.
Service: 2 p.m. Memorial Mass Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at St. Columbian Church in Preston. A memorial service was also held Aug. 22, 2001 in Romeoville, Ill.
Visitation: 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, before services.

Allen Charles Moltz 1948-2001
Allen Charles Moltz, 53, of Minneapolis, formerly of Austin, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at his home.
He was born March 2, 1948, to Charles and Helen (Peterson) Moltz in Austin.
He lived and worked in Minneapolis for the past 33 years.
He loved fine food and wine and enjoyed traveling to the west coast wine country.
Survivors include his father and stepmother, Charles and Helen Moltz, Austin; a brother, Brian Moltz, Edina; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elaine Erickson and her husband, Dale, Owatonna; Gayle Moltz and Randy Killian, Minneapolis; nephews, nieces and a great-nephew.
He was preceded in death by a baby sister, Janelle and his mother, Helen.
Service: 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at First United Methodist Church with Pastors Bruce Kronen and Bernard Dieker co-officiating. There will be no visitation or reviewal. Worlein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Interment: Grandview Cemetery
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Lorraine Maxine (nee Cummings) Nelson 1920-2001
Lorraine Maxine Nelson, 80, of Austin, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 23, 1920 in Parkers Prairie, Minn. to William and Vera (Shumate) Cummings.
She married Edmund Nelson July 15, 1939 in Charles City, Iowa. She lived in Austin most of her life.
Survivors include daughters, Carol Hensley, San Diego, Calif.; JoAnn Gaskins and her husband, Marshall, Birmingham, Ala.; sons, William Nelson and his wife, Debbie, Beloit, Wis.; Richard Nelson and his wife, Shirley, Austin; Gary Nelson and his wife, Lucille, Austin; David Nelson and his wife, Sheryl, Rochester; thirteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother, Lloyd Cummings and his wife, Mary, Austin; nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Sandy Miller; her parents; one brother; one sister.
Service: 1:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Karl Dalager officiating.
Visitation: Friends may call at the church one hour before the service today.
Interment: Grandview Cemetery, south of Austin.

Ora Woodrow Orth 1914-2001
Ora Woodrow Orth, 87, of Pine River, Minn., died Friday, August 17, 2001, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo, N.D.
She was born Aug. 2, 1914, in Austin, to Henry and Mary (Davis) Orth. He was raised and educated in the Austin area.
He married Maurine Peterson on June 18, 1935, in Lansing, Minn. Maurine died April 9, 1995. Ora started farming in 1935 and during his life, farmed near the communities of Delvin, Wells, Gukeen and Freeborn. In 1963, they moved to Pine River. Ora was still involved in farming when he entered the hospital on July 14, 2001. He loved the outdoors, was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. He was still hunting at age 86. He was also a member of the First Lutheran Church in Pine River.
He is survived by his sons, Donald, Backus; Vernon and JoAnn, Nisswa; Larry and Mary, Backus; Marlen and Jane, Pine River; Jerald, Pine River; Michael and Joanne, Pine River; sisters, Bertha Yarwood and Gladys Swanson, both of Austin; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sons, Ronald and LeRoy; grandchildren, Heidi and Debbie; sister, Lola and Edna; brothers, Floyd, Glenn and Roy.
Service: Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, 2001 at First Lutheran Church, Pine River, with Rev. John Twiton officiating.
Visitation: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001 at Northland Funeral Home Chapel, Pine River.
Interment: Pine Ridge Cemetery, Pine River.

Roger Petersen 1935-2001
Roger Petersen, 66, of Austin, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at his home.
He was born April 22, 1935, in Albert Lea, to George and Emma (Harris) Petersen.
He married Marjorie Dunlop July 9, 1955, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin.
He was a retired brick mason from Local 8 and an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family which included his wife and five children.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Petersen, Austin; two sons, Kevin and Mary Beth Petersen, Austin; David Petersen, Austin; three daughters, Jodi and Phil Patterson, St. Ansgar, Iowa; Mary and Randy Wilking, Truman; Lynn and Stu Riemann, Austin; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; five brothers, Ervin and Phyliss Petersen, Austin; Kenneth and Jeannie Petersen, Papillion, Neb.; Delbert and Phyliss Petersen, Sherburn; Floyd and Fran Petersen, San Martin, Calif.; Gordon and Carol Petersen, Faribault; a sister, Marjorie Rolfson, Austin; mother-in-law, Mrs. Hugh (Birdie) Dunlop, Austin; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Barb and John Felten, Rose Creek; Jack and Marlys Dunlop, Austin; Nancy and Cliff Reed, Austin; Jim Dunlop and Dee Wilmot, Austin; Tom and Lisa Dunlop, Austin; Bob and Jeannette Dunlop, Temple, Texas; Debbie and Clarence Horejsi, Owatonna; nieces and nephews.

Shirley Marie (nee Dastyck) Gunderson 1923-2009
Shirley Marie Gunderson, 86, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Sunday
afternoon, November 22, 2009, at Fieldcrest Nursing Home in Hayfield,
Minnesota.
She was born on April 22, 1923 to George and Helen (Hogan) Dastyck in
Austin. where she grew up, graduating from Austin High School in 1941. She
worked at Sears and Montgomery Wards and married Louis Gunderson on April
21, 1943 in Austin. Shirley quit working outside the home when the children
were born. After they were older, she worked at area nursing homes. A member
of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, she liked bowling, playing cards and dancing.
Shirley was always interested in social activities Shirley and Louis wintered
in Tucson, Ariz. for 22 years. Louis passed away on Sept. 19, 2006.
Survivors include her son, Rodney (Elaine) Gunderson of Connelsville,
Penn.; daughters, Cheryl (Michael) Mestad of Hayfield; Lori Young of Kasson;
nine grandchildren, Kari, Keith, Jenny, Kirk, Aaron, Lindsay, Bryce, Kelsey
and Taylor; seven great-grandchildren; Greyson, Drew, Maddy, Paige, Lilli,
Tracie, McKenna; three step-grandchildren, R.C., Matt and Lindsay; two
step-great-grandchildren, Damon and Zane; two brothers, George (Mary)
Dastyck of Tucson, Ariz.; Richard (Jessica) Dastyck of Oak, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 27, 2009 at
St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Ron Barnett officiating. Friends may
call at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday. Interment is
at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge
of arrangements. The family prefers memorials to St. Olaf Lutheran Church
or Field Crest Care Center.

Shirley E. Drake 1935-2001
Shirley E. Drake, age 66, of Austin, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at
Meadow Manor Healthcare Center in Grand Meadow.
She was born Feb. 28, 1935, in Grand Meadow to Samuel H. and Selma (Skaran)
Drake. She was baptized and confirmed in the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church.
She graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1954. She retired after 30
years of employment at Hormel Foods.
She accepted the Lord into her heart on July 8, 1991. She was baptized and joined Grace Baptist Church in Austin in August 1998.
Survivors include nephews and their wives, Jim and Julie Drake, Austin; Larry and Vicki Drake, Kansas; nieces, Linda Drake, Byron; Barbara Steinbrink, Prescott, Ariz.; six great-nieces and nephews; one great-great-nephew; sister-in-law, Margaret and Paul Klein, Sun City West, Ariz.; friends and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Donald, Lloyd and Richard.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one-half hour before the service.
Service: 1 p.m., Saturday, at Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Gordon Larson officiating. Casket bearers will be Bill Bell, David Pearson, Bill Holder, Wallace Gronseth, James Gronseth and Glenn Dahl. Musicians will be Nancy Larson and Bethany Larson.

Roger C. Lightly 1951-2001
Roger C. Lightly, age 50, of St. Charles, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at his home.
He was born Nov. 25, 1951, in Austin to Herbert and Helen (Toyne) Lightly.
He grew up on the family farm near Oakland and attended grade school in Oakland and later in Austin. He was a 1970 graduate of Austin High School and continued his education at St. Cloud Vocational Technical School.
Since September 1991 he had been a machinist at Strongwell Corporation in Chatfield.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Jason Hogle, Buffalo; two grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce Roberts, Austin; Jean and Roger Camerer, Bloomington; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Paul Lightly.

Donald Wannarka1927-2003
Donald Wannarka, 73, of Austin, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at his home.
He was born Dec. 18, 1927, in Austin to Adolph and Margaret (Leibfried) Wannarka.
He married Barbara Majerus July 14, 1961, at St. Augustine Catholic Church.
He was a cabinet maker who owned and operated Wannarka Woodwork for 50 years.
He was a member of American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Barb Wannarka, Austin; three daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Jo Wannarka, Upsala, Minn.; Stacie Wannarka, Rochester; Ranee and Darcy Farlinger, Spring Valley; a great-granddaughter; a sister and brother-in-law, Rosella and John Nemes, Crosslake, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Margaret Wannarka.

Adeline (Boss) O'Marro 1910-2001
Adeline (Boss) O'Marro, 90, of Austin, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001,
at Comforcare Good Samaritan Care Center.
She was born Dec. 25, 1910, in Thomas, S.D. to Webster and Josephine
(Anderson) Boss. She graduated from high school in Dell Rapids, S.D. in
1929.
She married John O'Marro Dec. 22, 1935, at St. Augustine Catholic
Church. The couple moved to Austin. In 1996, Adeline moved to Stewartville,
where she lived until 1999. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Walter Blake,
St. Ansgar, Iowa; Barbara and David Kath, Rochester; 13 grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; a son; a grandson; her
parents, Webster and Josephine; two sisters and one brother.
Visitation: Friends may call Mayer Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. tonight
and a half hour before the service on Monday.

Donovan Darrel Arends 1952-2001
Donovan Darrel Arends, 49, of Austin, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at the Austin Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 29, 1952, in Austin to Norman and Genevieve (Berning) Arends. He was a lifelong resident of the Austin area.
On March 18, 1978, he married Denise Brechtel in Osage, Iowa. The couple made their home in Austin, where Don worked for L.L. Hage Company.
Survivors include his wife, Denise Arends, Austin; son, Darin V. Arends, Austin; one grandson; parents, Norman and Genevieve Arends, Austin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Janette and Wylie Hovey, Rochester; Star and Mory Johnson, Austin; brother and sister-in-law, Rodney and Sandy Arends, Lonsdale; many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Service: Private family services will be held Wednesday.

Marvin Burnett Brekke 1923-2009
Marvin Burnett Brekke, 86, of rural Austin, died at Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea Friday morning, Nov. 20, 2009.
He was born April 1, 1923 to John P. and Thea Olivia (Stoa) Brekke in Moscow Township, Freeborn County, Minn. Marvin was raised by his sisters after his mother died of pneumonia when he was 2-years-old. Baptized and confirmed at Moscow Lutheran Church, Marvin attended Stoa country school and lived on the family farm most of his life. He married Mary June Arett in 1954 at Moscow Lutheran Church. To this union five children were born. Mary June died on June 24, 1972. Marvin worked near Oakland for the Cotter family as a farmhand for many years. He was an excellent mechanic to whom others turned for help with machinery and auto repairs. A member of Moscow Lutheran Church, Marvin was devoted to his family and had a gift for making conversation.
Survivors include two sons, Mark (Debra) Brekke of rural Austin, Paul Brekke of rural Austin; two daughters, Annette (Kim) Naatz of rural Glenville, Joyce (Jerry) Erstad of rural Austin; 10 grandchildren, Christopher, Lindsay and Emily Brekke, Adam Brekke, Jessica Naatz, Jonathan and Matthew Brekke, Lee, Emma and Megan Erstad; five great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; sister, Palma Ulland of LaPorte; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary; son, David; his parents; four brothers, Johan “Erling,” Brekke, Adolph, John and Emil Nordby; sisters, Sylvia Gilbertson, Bertha Hanson and Ruth Arnetveit.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m, Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 at Moscow Lutheran Church, 25826 870th St., Austin with Pastor Robert Berthold officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Hillcrest Cemetery near Oakland.

James Eugene Augustin 1941-2009
James Augustin, 68, died at his home in Austin Thursday evening, Nov. 19, 2009, following a fight with cancer for more than two years.
James Eugene Augustin was born Oct. 26, 1941 in Austin to George and Elta (Meier) Augustin. Jim graduated from Elkton High School. On Aug. 18, 1962 he married Linda Motle at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Sargeant. He lived in California for awhile before moving to Austin in 1966. He worked at Hormel Foods until 1979 and then went on to own his own business until he retired. Jim loved working with electronics and he put on seminars about electronics. He liked to work with CB radios and computers and just enjoyed having “coffee with the guys.”
He is survived by his wife Linda, Austin; three daughters, Lisa (Billie) Degnan, Utica, Debra (Andrew) Mitson, Washington C. H., Ohio, Leone (Rick) Borden, Mesa, Ariz., one son, Tim (Debbie) Augustin , Gaithersburg, Md.; five grandchildren, Tina May Hyland, Jessika Rae Hyland, Matthew James Borden, Jamie Michael Borden, Analise Rae Mitson; two great-grandchildren, Parker James Borden, Zakkary James Hyland; one sister, Ruth (Chester) Sande, Bloomington; one brother, Vic (Debbie) Augustin, Austin; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, George; and one sister, Loretta.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Smith officiating. Delmar Dean Ellis1933-2009
Delmar Dean Ellis, 76, of Austin passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 22, 2009 at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center in Austin.
Delmar was born on Oct. 13, 1933 in Lansing County to George and Laura (Akkerman) Ellis. He grew up in rural Austin and joined the Navy where he served his country on the USS Grand Canyon (AD-28), a tender ship for the Sixth Fleet. On Sept. 29, 1956, Delmar married Betty McGowan in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a farmer most of his life and enjoyed going to auctions, and spending time with his family and friends. Delmar was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #91 and VFW Post #1216.
Survivors include his wife Betty of Austin; five children, Hugh Ellis of Brownsdale, Minn., Glenn (Cynthia) Ellis of Calif., Delmar Jr. (Phyllis) Ellis of Fairmont, Minn., Angela Clennon of Greenville, S.C., and Mischelle (Wayne) Edgar of Austin; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Raymond (Kathy) Ellis of Dexter, Norbert (Judy) Ellis of Sandstone, Minn., Mark Ellis of Hinckley, Minn., Betty Jane Walrath of Gainesville, Miss., Carol Brecht of Hinckley, Minn., Rodney (Norma) Ellis of Hinckley, Minn., Paul (Bonnie) Ellis of Austin; special friend, Marilyn Matter of Austin; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Martha Agnes (nee Ripka) Morehouse 1918-2009
Martha Agnes Morehouse, 91, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at Cedars of
Austin Assisted Living Center.
She was born January 5, 1918 in Knife Lake, Township, Minnesota, to
Louis and Agnes Ripka. She grew up on a family farm in Mora, Minn. and
attended school there.
On Sept. 24, 1940 she married Melchor (Mac) Morehouse in Mora, Minnesota,
and from there moved to St. Paul. They moved back to Mora until 1959, when
they moved their family to Austin. Martha worked as a waitress for Harry’s
Cafe until her retirement in 1980. Martha was a member of Queen of Angels
Catholic Church where she was active in the Rosary Society and the Women’s
Circle for 50 years.
She enjoyed working in her garden, quilting, playing cards, reading and
spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Janet (James) Seiver, Rochester, Minn.,
Michael Morehouse, Austin, Nancy (Terry) Lafin, Columbia, Md., Thomas (Dawn)

Casketbearers will be her grandchildren, Adam Lafin, Jessica Knox, Chris Jiracek, Kirsten Moss, Kristine Sawyer and Melissa Morehouse. Honorary casketbearers will be the rest of her grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009 at 10 a.m. at Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Visitation is Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin. Interment will be Friday, Nov. 27, 2009 at St. Mary’s Cemetary in Mora, Minn.

Karen Annella Page 1940-2009
Karen Annella Page, 69, of Austin died early Friday morning, Nov. 20,
2009 of a pulmonary embolism after successful surgery for endometrial
cancer.
Karen Annella Page was born April 16, 1940 in Austin to Roy and Lucile
(Vandegrift) Page. She attended elementary and high school in Austin and graduated from the University of Minnesota. She worked for the state of Minnesota for many years.
Karen lived in New York City, N.Y. and Minneapolis, before returning to Austin to care for her mother.
Karen is survived by her daughter, Sarah Hagan of Boston, Mass. and her brother, John Page of Duluth, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorials may be made to the Mower County Humane Society.

Kenneth A. Kahler1928-2001
Kenneth A. Kahler, 73, of Austin, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
He was born April 13, 1928, in Klemme, Iowa, to Emmett C. and Margaret (Bates) Kahler.
He married Jackolein Jean Norton July 19, 1953, at the Church of Christ
in Austin.
He worked as a mechanic for Hormel Foods and as a farmer.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Legion, VFW, Elks Lodge
813, American Legion and the Rural Letter Carrier Auxiliary.
Survivors include a son, Gary Kahler, Austin; two daughters, Deb Kahler,
Austin; Nancy Allore, Austin; two grandsons; a brother and sister-in-law,
Robert and Kay Kahler, Prior Lake; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law,
Alvin Noterman, Boulder, Colo.; John and Jean Norton, Austin; Elaine and
Cliff Stoen, Austin; Aggie and Dick Pederson, Rose Creek; Barb and John
Wendal, Waverly, Iowa; Eudell and Maynard Hamor, Joliet, Ill.; Judy and

Earl R. "Bud" Campbell 1922-2001
Earl R. "Bud" Campbell, age 79, of Austin, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001,
at the Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis.
He was born June 17, 1922, in Canton, Ohio to Albert and Mabel (Suttor)
Campbell.
On July 21, 1979, he married Martha Drake at St. Olaf Lutheran Church
in Austin.
He worked at Weyerhaeuser. He served in World War II from 1942 to 1947.
His tour of duty included Africa, Sicily and Normandy. He received the
purple heart, a bronze star and many other medals.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Campbell, Austin; children, Darlene
and Kenneth Dahlberg, Isanti; Craig and Carolyn Campbell, Mazeppa; Cindy
and Steve Schlichter, Austin; Karin and Dan Kerrigan, Holmen, Wis.; Jeff
and Julie Campbell, Austin; Donovan and Cynthia Drake, Austin; Debra Drake,
Wellman, Texas; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Elaine (nee Jensen) Cochlin 1936-2001
Elaine (Jensen) Cochlin, age 65, of Austin, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001,
at her home.
She was born Oct. 29, 1936, in Albert Lea to Joseph and Mildred
(Gudvangen) Jensen. Her family lived on a farm in Riceland Township. She
graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1954.
On April 25, 1956, she married Patrick James Cochlin at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Geneva.
The purchased the Moscow Township farm from Patrick's parents in 1956
where she lived until she moved to Austin.
She held various jobs throughout her life, most recently as a receptionist
at the Super 8 Motel in Austin.
Her hobbies included fishing, bowling, quilting and spending time
with family and friends. She was a very active member of the Moose Lodge
of Austin.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Raymond Smith,
Nevada, Iowa; Penny and Neil Whannel, Rochester; sons and daughters-in-law,
Patrick "Buck" and Julie (Miller) Cochlin, Blooming Prairie; Paul and Lisa
(Bylkas) Cochlin, Onalaska, Wis.; David and Jodi (Trom) Cochlin, Owatonna;
15 grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, James and Nancy Jensen,

Wesley Joseph Collette 1918-2001
Wesley Joseph Collette, age 83, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Austin
Medical Center of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
He was born July 18, 1918, in Verona, N.D. to Francis Joseph and Ida
Mae (La Fond) Collette. He was the eighth of 12 children.
He was a retired Hormel Foods Corporation employee. He had worked for
43 and one-half years in the lard room/rendering department and also had
19 years of service as a butcher at Wennes' Food Market in Austin.
A World War II veteran, he belonged to the 191st Medical Regiment,
Company B 752nd MP Battalion. During his military service (1940 to 1946)
he married Edna Olsen of Albert Lea. They were married for 37 years and
had two children, Frank and Julie.
After Edna's death in 1979, he married Madelon Lostegaard on Oct. 4,
1980.
They ran an arts and crafts business for over 18 years, traveling
around the Midwest.
He gave 30 years of service to the Austin Police Auxiliary, did volunteer
work at the J.C. Hormel Nature Center, was past church council president at
Burr Oak Grove Lutheran Church, participated in the Austin Exchange Club
and Boy Scouts of America and donated countless hours of service to dozens
of Mower County Senior Citizen Center functions. Wes and Madelon reigned
as the 2001 Senior King and Queen of Austin's Spamtown USA Festival.
He enjoyed dancing, cribbage, cards, pocket slots and his grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Madelon, Austin; son and daughter-in-law,
Frank and Barb Collette, Champion, Mich.; daughter and son-in-law, Julie
and Tony Razidlo, Austin; stepdaughters and stepson-in-law, Shari and
Gary Gode, Vadnais Heights; Salle Crutaire, Sauk Rapids; sisters, Mildred
King; Austin; Doralene Lynch, St. Paul; Della Madison, St. Paul; Clairibelle
Olson, Payson, Ariz.; brother, Ambrose Collette, Holland, Ohio; many
grandchildren; great-granchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Ida Mae; first
wife, Edna; brother, Elvy; sister, Lorene; grandson, Stephen; two sets
of twin siblings.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at the funeral home
and at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Eleanor Ann (nee Pietrantonio) PETERSON 1919-2001
Eleanor Ann Peterson, age 82, of Santa Rosa, California, formerly of
Eveleth, Spring Valley and Austin, Minnesota, died Nov. 7, 2001.
She was born Nov. 1, 1919, in Eveleth to Italian immigrants Dominic and
Elvira (Rainaldi) Pietrantonio.
She attended the University of Minnesota earning a bachelor's degree
in nursing.
On Sept. 2, 1944, she married Willard Hall Peterson, a medical student
also at the University of Minnesota.
They lived in Spring Valley in the early 1950s where Dr. Peterson was
engaged in family practice medicine. They moved to Austin in the mid 1950s
where he went to work in the medical department at George A. Hormel and
Company. The family of 10 moved to northern California where he established
a family practice in the community of Rohnert Park where Eleanor returned
to nursing as she assisted her husband in the office until they retired
in the mid 1980s.
She enjoyed her family, Italian cooking, gardening and canning.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Barbara Crislip; Susan and
James Farr; sons and daughters-in-law, Philip and Joan Peterson; Steve and
Wendy Peterson; Mark and Carol Peterson; David and Janice Peterson; Douglas
and Ditas Peterson; Paul and Suzanne Peterson; 10 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard H. Peterson, M.D.

Kenneth M. Dockham 1934-2001
Kenneth M. Dockham, age 67, of Albert Lea, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
He was born July 22, 1934, in Mower County to Charles and Mabel Dockham.
He attended public school in Austin.
He served in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1956.
On Jan. 14, 1961, he married Patricia Johnson in Austin.
He was employed by the Golden Dairy in Austin for many years before going to work at the Universal Tire Warehouse in Albert Lea. He was also a part-time custodian for the Albert Lea School District working at the Senior High School for over thirty years.
He was active in the American Legion Club in Austin for many years. He loved football and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He also loved to spend time with friends, going for walks and car rides with his wife, Patricia. He also enjoyed the kids at school.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia, Albert Lea; daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Thomas Thompson, Albert Lea; three grandchildren; sisters, Charolette Alt, Austin; Alice Schlicter, Austin; Marcella Mauer, Austin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roland and Georgia Dockham; Charles and Judy Dockham, Anoka; Adolph and Betty Dockham, Minneapolis; stepbrothers and sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Irene; sisters, Bertha and Eileen; brother, Kenny.

Lawrence Alonzo Carter 1909-2001
Lawrence Alonzo Carter, 92, formerly of Austin, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at the Meadow Manor Nursing Home in Grand Meadow, where he lived for the past three and a half years.
He was born July 21, 1909, in Oelwein, Iowa, to Don Carlos and Mabel Irene (Woodruff) Carter.
He married Adelaide C. Lickteig Sept. 14, 1937, in Cresco, Iowa.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a Pfc. in the 32nd Division of the 128th Infantry Co. C. He served in the Phillipines and Japan.
He worked on the Alcan Highway in Alaska, Jewel Tea Company and Golden Dairy in Austin.
He collected coins, stamps and clowns. His clowns and homemade train set are in the Mower County Historical Society.
He loved to tap dance.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and James Whittington, Flower Mound, Tx.; and Jane (Gene) Knapp, Naperville, Ill.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Don (Linda) Carter, Sibley, Iowa; Dean Carter, Hutchinson, Kan.; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Catherine Addis, Cottonwood, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Adelaide July 9, 1993.
Visitation: There was a 7 p.m. wake service Sunday night, Nov. 4, 2001, at Mayer Funeral Home where friends called from 4 to 8 p.m. and from 9 to 10 a.m. today.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Donald Zenk officiating. Casket bearers were Jim Whittington, Gene Knapp, Dean Carter, Steven Ward, Bob Lockwood and Tony Burke. Military rites were by American Legion Post No. 91.

Elaine Ruth Pike, 79, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at her daughter's
home in Brownsdale, Mower County, Minnesota.
She was born July 9, 1922, to Walter and Helena (Diedrich) Wilde on the
family farm in Mitchell County, Iowa.
She married Lawrence Leonard Pike Oct. 7, 1945, at St. John's Lutheran
Church, Rock Township. She was also baptized and confirmed at St. John's.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, Iowa.
Survivors include a son, Wayne Pike and his wife, Rhonda, Sparta, Wis.; two daughters, Linda Unverzagt and her husband, Edward, Brownsdale; Helen Pike, Austin; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence; one sister, Lois Beyer; two brothers, LaVerne and Roland.

David Rupkalvis, 82, of Westlaco, Texas, formerly of Austin, died
Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, while golfing. He was retired from Hormel Company.
Survivors include two daughters, MylaLee Anderson and her husband, Jerry,
Austin; Eileen Reaslan and her husband, Tom, Minnetonka; a son, Kenneth
Rupkalvis and his wife, Carol, San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Anna Barnfreth
and her husband, Robert, Rochester; a brother, Albert Rupkalvis and his wife,
Barb, Rochester; seven grandchildren; great-grandchildren;
great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Almira; his parents; brothers
and a sister.

Mercedes, Texas. The body will then be cremated.

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA - Julia Shane, 85, of Austin, Minnesota, died on
Saturday, August 18, 2001, at Burr Oak Manor where she was a resident.
Julia was born on October 23, 1915, in Austin, Minnesota, to Frank and
Anna (Steiner) Wendel. She had several positions of work throughout her
lifetime including home care and clothing care.
She was an auxiliary member of the Eagles Club, VFW and Moose. Julia
spent several years serving and working with the VFW and Moose and then
settled to one position with the Moose where she served several years. She
had several positions in the kitchen area with her last position preparing
bread baskets. Everyone there knew her as The Bread Lady.
She had served the public in many different ways and was well praised by
her peers and well liked by many people. Julia was the last born in her
family. She was always called the baby and at that time the family spoke
mostly German. By the time she came along the schools were required to
teach English so she learned as she went.
She enjoyed growing flowers, gardening, cooking and collecting recipes
of all kinds of foods. She had thousands of recipes dating back to the early
1900s with her favorite being homemade baked beans. In her younger years,
she liked going dancing at the Terp Ballroom. She was a lover of polka music
and she played the accordion and the harmonica.

Adaline M. Silver, 92, formerly of Austin, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, in Phoenix, Ariz.
She was born July 29, 1909, in Alburnett, Iowa.

Interment: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, Grandview Cemetery, in Austin.

Vernon Wessel "Bud" Smith 1923-2001
Vernon "Bud" Wessel Smith, age 78, of Austin, died Saturday, Aug. 25,
2001, at his home.
He was born July 17, 1923, at Buffalo Center, Iowa, to Theodore and
Mathilda (Jutting) Smith. He grew up and attended school in the Scarville,
Iowa area.
He married Evelyn Langfold on Nov. 26, 1946, at the Center Lutheran
Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, where they lived until moving to Austin in 1951.
He was employed in the construction industry until 1975 when he became a
maintenance supervisor for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
in Austin, where he was also a member. He loved music and was able to fix
anything.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Smith, of Austin; children, David (Sue)
Smith, of Hayward; Roxann Kay, of Long Lake, Minn.; Pamela Nicholas, of
Blooming Prairie; Gregory (Kathy) Smith, of American Fork, Utah; Valerie
(Mike) Rogers, of Austin; Doug (Sue) Smith, of Austin; Lorraine (JP) Cole,
of Tracy, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Carolee Bishofsky, of Holmen, Wis.; 22
grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Adams, of Austin;
Esther Fure, of Albert Lea; nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Dorothy and Gladys; brother, William; son, Vance; and daughter, Lori Smith.
Service: 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001 at the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints with President Robert Flatt officiating. Oganist will
be Merilee Blake. Soloists will be Abbie Bishofsky and David Smith. Casket
bearers will be: Benjamin Adams, Jeffrey Rogers, Charity Smith, Jonathan
Rogers, Kyle Larson and John Alsaker. Honorary bearers will be Joshua
Nichols and Paul Cole.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and at the church for one hour before the service on Wednesday.
Interment: Grandview Cemetery, Austin.

Arnold C. Snortum1931-2001
Arnold C. Snortum, 70, of Adams, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at Dexter.
He was born June 30, 1931, in Marshall Township, Minn., to Carl and Elsie (Huntley) Snortum.
He attended Adams High School. He farmed the family's farm in the Marshall Township for most of his life.
He enjoyed working with and fixing his radios and televisions. He also enjoyed drawing cartoons.
Arnold was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of Marshall Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his brother, Nordeen Snortum, Adams; sister, Elaine Johnson, Fairchild, Wis.; half-brother, Harold Rosenthal, Springfield, Ore.; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his half-brother, Alvin Rosenthal.
Service: 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at Marshall Lutheran Church with the Rev. Richard Kastner officiating. Organist will be Charlotte Anderson and the soloists will be Jan Johnson and Richard Nagel. Casket bearers will be John Anderson, Kenneth Binkley, Roy Hamilton, Luvern Hanson, Dale Johnson and Jon Shaw.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Adams Funeral Home and on Friday at the church one hour before the service.
Interment: Marshall Lutheran Cemetery.

Dolores E. (nee Appel) Stromley 1928-2001
Dolores E. Stromley, 73, of River Falls, Wis., died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
Dolores was born Aug. 26, 1928, to Henry and Pearl Appel, of Austin.
She is survived by her children, Wayne (Judie) Stromley, Arkansas; Doug Stromley, River Falls, Wis.; Jan Mayhew, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; Diane (Jeff) Kuhl, Clear Lake, Wis.; Marlys (Joe) Hoy, Necedah, Wis.; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis, Helen, Sharon and Joanne; brothers, Rodney and Raymond.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; and infant son, Donald.
Service: 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Cashman Funeral Home, River Falls, Wis.
Visitation: noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at Cashman Funeral Home with services following.
Interment: Spring Lake Cemetery
