Mary Elizabeth (nee Diggins)(Simonson) Peters

1928-2003

Mary Elizabeth Peters, 75, of Austin, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Our House-Memory Care in Austin.

She was born June 28, 1928, to John and Lena (Boyenga) Diggins in Austin, where she attended school.

On September 9, 1946, she married Harold W. Peters. They later divorced. Mary raised her family, working at Gerard of Minnesota and as a nursing assistant at Sacred Heart.

She married Arnie Simonson in the late 1970's. They later divorced.

Mary moved to Rochester in 1989 and returned to Austin in May of 2003.

She enjoyed reading, being outdoors with nature and spending time with family.

Survivors include sons, Harold "Pete" (Ann) Peters, Austin; Steve (Ann) Peters, Dover; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Grace Weber, Rochester; brother, Roy Eisentrager; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and both husbands.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at the funeral home with a 7:30 p.m. Parish Prayer Service and Thursday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joseph Fogal officiating.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery.

June M. Reinartz

1940-2003

June M. Reinartz, age 62, of Rose Creek, Mower ocunty, Minnesota, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester.

She was born Oct. 6, 1940, in Austin, Minnesota, to Carl and Harriet (Reetz) Reinartz.

June attended St. Peters Catholic Grade School and Rose Creek High School. She lived with her parents until her dad died in 1953, and remained with her mother until her death in 1966. She then made her home with her sister Dorothy and her family. Since January 2002, due to failing health, she resided at the Adams Group Home.

As a young girl she worked at the Reinartz Cafe that her parents owned in Rose Creek. She delivered the Rochester Post Bulletin newspaper for many years. She was an Honor Carrier by the Rochester Post Bulletin in 1996. She also worked at the Cedar Branch Developmental Achievement Center in Adams, Minn.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 12, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church with the Rev. Ruben Spinler officiating. Interment will be in the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Rose Creek. Visitation will be held at the Adams Funeral Home on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and prayer service at 7 p.m. and on Saturday at St.

Peter's Catholic Church for one hour before the service. Organist will be Joyce Edland. Music will be sung by the St. Peter's Catholic Church Choir.

Honorary bearers will be the staff and residents of the Adams Group Home, and the staff and clients of Cedar Branch-DAC, Adams, Minn. Bearers will be Mercedes Gossman, Gwen Swenson, Ruth Nold, Sharon Osmundson, Janet Douty and Diane Feuchtenberger.

June is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Pete Zender of Rose Creek, Minn.; niece, Jody Allen, her husband David and children, Benjamin and Jordyn, of Maple Grove, Minn.; niece, Jill Zender and fiance Nick Penrod of Brownsdale, Minn.; numerous cousins, friends, and her beloved cat, Rusty.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Delores LaVonne Schumacher

1937-2003

Delores LaVonne Schumacher, 65, of Albert Lea, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at Good Samaritan Center, Albert Lea.

She was born Sept. 15, 1937, to Margaret Schumacher. Delores' mother died when she was eight years old, and she was subsequently raised by her grandparents.

Delores lived in the Austin area, including Burr Oak Manor until 1999 when she moved to Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Visitation: One hour before the service.

Service: 1 p.m., Thursday, July 10, 2003, at the funeral home with the Rev. Joe Tamayo officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Elsie Srock

1913-2003

BURIAL AT AUSTIN

Elsie Srock, 90, of Brainerd, Minnesota, died Thursday, June 3, 2003, at her granddaughters home in Pine River.

She was born June 23, 1913, in Willow Springs, Mo., to Charles and Lizzie (Miller) McClellan. She was active with Head Start and Foster Grandparents Programs in Brainerd.

Survivors include sister Gladys Anglin, Gove, Kan.; 10 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; two sons, Charles and LeRoy Srock; seven sisters and three brothers.

Visitation: One hour before the service Monday, July 7, 2003, at the church.

Service: 2 p.m. Monday at the Assemblies of God Tabernacle in Crosby with Rev. Tracy Srock officiating.

Interment: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Grandview Cemetery in Austin.

Raymond W. "Cotton" Stahr

1924-2003

Raymond "Cotton" W. Stahr, 78, of LeRoy, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at the Spring Valley Care Center, Spring Valley.

He was born Nov. 18, 1924, to Freeman and Laura (Kroeger) Stahr.

After his schooling, he worked at Rath's Packing Plant and John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa. He moved to LeRoy in the mid 1950's where he farmed in partnership with Sam Montgomery until his retirement. Raymond lived at the Spring Valley Care Center for a short time.

He enjoyed family, going to his cabin in Northern Minnesota and his Fourth of July picnics in LeRoy.

Survivors include sisters, LaVonne Draper, Lanesboro; Lourna Wedemeir, Hudson, Iowa; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation: 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2003, at the church.

Service: 11 a.m. Friday at the LeRoy Lutheran Church in LeRoy with the Rev. Tom Kolden officiating.

Interment: 3:15 p.m. Friday at the Dysert Cemetery, Dysert, Iowa.

Gail Marguerite (Igou) Tapager

1931-2003

Gail Marguerite Tapager, 71, died suddenly July 19 2003, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 28, 1931, in Austin, Minnesota to Joseph Harris and Marguerite (Boody) Igou. In 1947, she moved with her parents to Tucson, Ariz. Following the death of her father in 1949, she returned with her mother to Austin where she graduated from Austin High School in 1950.

On Aug. 30, 1962, she married Delbert Hoffman. They where later divorced. She married Tommy Tapager on May 3, 1975.

Survivors include her husband, Tommy Tapager; sons, Kerry Hoffman, Tucson, Ariz; Todd Hoffman, Houston, Texas; three stepchildren, Pamela Hall, Austin; Larry Tapager, Elsworth, Wis.; John Tapager, Austin; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother, Wesley Igou, La Mesa, Calif.; sister, Maxine (Bernhard) Schwandt, Tucson, Ariz.; nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, at Christ Episcopal Church, 301 Third Ave. NW, Austin.

Allen O. Thompson

1924-2003

Allen O. Thompson, age 78, of Austin, died Friday, July 11, 2003, at his home. He had been in ill health for many years suffering with heart problems, diabetes and kidney failure.

Allen was the son of the late Oscar and Jennie (Anderson) Thompson. He was born September 22, 1924, in rural Ellendale, Steele County. He graduated from Ellendale High School in 1942.

Allen was united in marriage to Marjean I. Randall on March 29, 1944.

They farmed in rural Ellendale for 36 years along with running two gasoline businesses. He drove school bus for 17 years. In later years he helped out at Farmer's Elevator and Brian's Pioneer Seed Store in Ellendale.

Allen was a member of First Lutheran Church in Ellendale where he served as president and financial secretary. He was a member of the Elk's Club, Ellendale Commercial Club and State Guard.

Allen was a kind, dedicated father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed all sports, especially high school and college. He loved attending all of his children's and grandchildren's activities. Allen also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He lived in rural Ellendale until 1992 when he moved to Austin. He became a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law: Bruce and Faye Thompson, Longmont, Colo., and Rodney and Cheryl Thompson, North Bend, Wash.; daughter, Cheryl Dunlap; six grandchildren: Jess and Betsy Dunlap, Brett Dunlap, Travis and Sonja Thompson, Chad and Sarah Thompson, Holly Thompson and Payton Thompson; five great grandchildren: Skylar, Ashley, Courtney, Brendan and Nicholas; many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marjean Thompson on July 14, 2000; parents, Oscar and Jennie Thompson; sister, Margaret Uptadel; brothers-in-law: Eugene Berntson and George Uptadel; son-in-law, James Dunlap.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, July 14, 2003, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Rev. Ron Barnett officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery in Ellendale.

Charles Joseph Thompson

1912-2003

Charles Joseph Thompson, 90, of Austin, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home, of cancer.

Chuck was born December 16, 1912, in Austin, Minn., to Harvey and Kathryn (Bushman) Thompson. He grew up in Austin and attended St. Augustine Schools. He served in the Army during WWII as an engineer on the Iranian State Railroad. On October 26, 1946, he married Louise Dorothy Bellrichard. The couple lived in Austin all of their married life. Charles worked as an engineer on the railroad out of Austin for many years.

He enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping and bowling and being with his family and friends. A group of his railroad co-workers have continued to meet for breakfast or supper together a couple times a month over the years. Chuck enjoyed these gatherings very much and never missed any if possible. He was a life long member of Queen of Angels Church, the American Legion and the VFW. On February 14, 1993, he married Bueta Sweazey at Queen of Angels Church.

Survivors include his wife, Bueta Thompson, Austin; daughter, Darlene Exline, Denver, Colo.; four grandsons: Steve Thompson, Galen Thompson, Brad Exline and Todd Exline; three granddaughters: Tonja Seha, Vicki Exline and Tara Exline; 16 great grandchildren; two step-daughters; one step-son; 10 step-grandchildren; 22 step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Gladys Thompson; two cousins: Evelyn Jorgenson and Francis Paterson.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Thompson on March 13, 1987; son, David Thompson; twin brother, Chester; brother, Vernon.

A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father William Becker officiating. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Monday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 5-8 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91 and VFW Post #1216.

David Eugene Thomson

1957-2003

David Eugene Thomson, 45, of Austin, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at his home.

He was born Oct. 7, 1957, to Carlton and Muriel (Glenna) Thomson in Austin, where he attended school.

On April 11, 1987, he married Alice Lamb at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Brownsdale. They were later divorced.

Employers included Farmstead Foods and Streaters in Albert Lea and Austin Daily Herald.

A former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Dave enjoyed fishing, camping, playing pool and carpentry.

Survivors include his son, Anthony Thomson, Brownsdale; parents, Carlton and Muriel Thomson, Austin; brothers, James (Patricia) Thomson, Glendale, Wis.; Robert (Kathy) Thomson, North Richland Hills, Texas; John (Sarah) Thomson, Burnsville; sister, Barbara (Todd) Anderson, Austin; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; former wife, Alice Cross, Brownsdale.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and one sister, Patricia Thomson.

Chris William Tiernan

1928-2003

Chris William Tiernan, 75, of Papillion, Neb., died July 26, 2003, in Omaha, Neb.

He was born Feb. 4, 1928, in Alliance, Neb., to Chris A. and Inez R. (Schuck) Tiernan.

He was co-owner, with his father, of Echo Lanes in Austin.

On Feb. 12, 1951, he married Marilyn G. Still in Ft. Benning, Ga.

Chris served in the Army during the Korean War receiving the Bronze Star.

He was a member of Legion Club #32 in Papillion, Neb. and St. Columbkille Catholic Church, also in Papillion.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Tiernan, Papillion, Neb.; daughter, Judy Yamamura, Sammanish, Wash.; sons, Chris W. Tiernan, Jr., San Francisco, Calif.; Robert Tiernan, Antioch, Calif.; three grandchildren; sisters, Nadyne Michael, Omaha, Neb.; Arlyne Nish, Omaha, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 14th and K, Lincoln, Neb., with Father Tom Dowd officiating. There will be a 10 a.m. Rosary.

Donald Dale Voigt

1928-2003

Donald Dale Voigt, 75, of Austin, died Thursday morning, July 3, 2003, at Prairie Manor in Blooming Prairie. He died of complications from Parkinson's Disease.

He was born June 5, 1928, to Hilda Mae and Herman Voigt in Geneva, Minn. He served in the Navy during World War II and married Betty Day on June 24, 1950, in Brownsdale. He owned a dry cleaning business in Yuma, Ariz., and The Tendermaid in Austin where he retired.

Survivors include his wife Betty of Austin; daughter, Nancy (Chris) Krage of Coon Rapids; son, Tim (Merry) Voigt of Austin; two grandsons, Josh and Bryan Krage; brother, Arnold Voigt of Nisswa.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Grandview Cemetery with The Reverend Heidi Heimgartner officiating. Worlein Funeral Home in Austin is in charge of arrangements. Military rites by American Legion Post 91.

Larry Dale Weatherly

1964-2003

Larry Dale Weatherly, 38, of Byron, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, of cancer at Rochester Methodist Hospital.

Born Dec. 26, 1964, in Minneapolis, he moved with his family as an infant to Rochester, where he attended school. Larry served in the National Guard for 12 years. He was activated and served during Desert Storm in 1991. On July 29, 1995, he married Linda L. Boysen.

Larry was employed at NcNeilius Truck & Manufacturing in Dodge Center. Linda is executive head housekeeper at Country Inn and Suites, south at Rochester. Larry was a collector of N scale miniature trains and enjoyed restoring classic cars and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Linda of Byron; three sons, Cory (Lovie) Boysen of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; Travis and Shane Weatherly, at home; three grandchildren, Trevor, Desiree and Mason; mother, Judy (Miller) Weatherly of Stewartville; sister, Lynn Anderson of Rochester.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2003, and on Thursday until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Service: 2 p.m. Thursday at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville.

Interment: Riverside Cemetery, Salem Corners, with military graveside honors by the VFW and American Legion posts.

She was born Aug. 22, 1910, in Meyer, Iowa, to John and Anna (Blake) Blaser. She attended school in Meyer.

She married Gregory Jax on Feb. 12, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, Iowa. Together, they farmed in the Johnsburg area until their retirement in 1978 when they moved to Adams. Irene was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams. She enjoyed gardening and baking, but most of all, she enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Eugene Heimer, Adams; sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Sandy Jax, Bloomington; Bob and Joann Jax, Mayer; David and Nancy Jax, Bloomington; John and Cindy Jax, Adams; Chuck and Char Jax, Bloomington; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Armella Kramer, Osage, Iowa; Kathleen Wiste, Adams; Rita and Ben Smith, Stacyville, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Viola Blaser, Osage, Iowa; Kenneth and Lucille Blaser, Osage, Iowa; Norbert Blaser, Adams; Gervis and Lucina Blaser, Meyer, Iowa; nieces and nephews.

Betty J. (nee Fossey)
ALTUM

1927-2001

Betty Jean Altum, 74, of Austin, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

She was born, April 17, 1927 in Austin to George and Lulu (Jacobson) Fossey.

She graduated from Lyle High School and attended Luther College. She was married to Charles C. Altum, Jr. Aug. 21, 1948, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle.

They resided in Toledo, Ohio. Following her husband's death in 1958, Betty moved with her children to Hawaii where she attended the University of Hawaii.

She returned to the Austin area in 1962 where she worked as a secretary for the Mower County Public Health Nursing Services from 1963 to 1989.

She transferred to the Mower County Recycling Center in 1989 until her retirement.

She was an avid golfer and walker.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Cynthia and James Earnshaw, Eagle River, Alaska; a son, Mitchell Altum, Austin; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a step granddaughter; two step great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Lois Fossey, Austin; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; and a son, Scott.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Russell Wangen officiating. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

David L. Badger

1930-2001

David L. Badger, 71, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

He was born May 11, 1930, in Rochester.

He grew up in Rochester and graduated from the former Rochester High School.

He married Genevieve L. Rud Feb. 27, 1949 in Rock Dell.

He worked for Rochester Sand and Gravel for 20 years, then operated Badger Sewer and Water Service from 1972 to 1990.

He drove for Rochester School Bus Service for several years and for Warren Grain Co. of Spring Valley as a heavy equipment operator.

He was a lifelong member of Zumbro Lutheran Church. He served on Rochester Youth Hockey Board and also coached.

He was a Rochester Elks Lodge member and a member of the heavy equipment operator local.

Survivors include his father, Donald N. Badger, Wabasha; five sons, David Badger, Jr. and his wife, Susan, Carrollton, Texas; Daniel Badger and his wife, Jean, Spring Valley; Jeffrey Badger, Rochester; Layton Badger and his wife, Pat, Rochester; Brent Badger, Bloomington; two daughters, Linda Gutierrez, Atascadero, Calif.; and Paulette Lewis and her husband, Richard, Austin; 10 grandchildren; one brother and one sister, Donald Badger and his wife, Delores, Rochester; and Deanna Hoepper and her husband, Paul, Wabasha.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve, in 1963; his mother; two brothers; and one sister.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Zumbro Lutheran Church, Rochester with the Rev. Carol A. Solovitz officiating.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. at Vine Funeral Home today and at the church Monday one hour prior to service.

Donna J. (nee Meres) Becker

1950-2001

Donna J. Becker, 51, of Austin, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at her home.

She was born July 11, 1950 in Mason City, Iowa, to Leslie E. and L. Evelyn (Peterson) Meres.

She married Richard Becker June 28, 1969, in Austin. They divorced in 1989.

She was a licensed practical nurse at Austin Medical Center for over 20 years.

She enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Survivors include two daughters, Shelly Janning and her husband, Ted, Blooming Prairie; Amy Hultman and her husband, Jason, Austin; father and stepmother, Leslie and Virginia Meres, Yuma, Ariz.; five grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy Meres, Austin; Brenda Spangenberg and her husband, Dave, Eagle Lake; one brother, Bruce Meres, Austin; nieces and nephews.

She also had a special companion for 12 years, Tom Vaughn.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Howard Bellrichard

1915-2001

Howard "Toots" Bellrichard, 85, of Austin, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

He was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Eastman, Wis.

He was a retired employee of Hormel Foods and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include two sons, Terry Bellrichard and his wife, Cheryl, Austin; Douglas Bellrichard, St. Paul; two daughters, Pamela LeClair and her husband, Jack, Rochester; Patricia Berczyk and her husband, Bryan, Shoreview; a stepson, Dennis Lastine, Eagan; two stepdaughters, Sharon Rich and her husband, Ron, LeRoy; Sandy Lastine, Minneapolis; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Russell Bellrichard, Milwaukee, Wis.; Basil "Sparky" Bellrichard and his wife, Dorothy, Austin; two sisters, Marie Thomas, Naples, Fla.; and Shirley Kramer, Austin.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude and his second wife, Veronica.

Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Fathers Paul Nelson and Frank Enright officiating. Honorary casket bearers will be Daniel Coyle and David Coyle. Casket bearers will be Brenda Bellrichard, Renee Bellrichard, Kevin Bellrichard, Tom Berczyk and Joe Berczyk.

Visitation: 6:30 p.m. wake service today at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001.

Iris F. (nee Witham) Brandt

1915-2001

Iris F. Brandt, 86 of Anoka and formerly of Austin, died Friday morning, Aug. 3, 2001 at Maranatha Care Center in Brooklyn Center. The daughter of Ira and Mary (McGregor) Witham was born March 12, 1915, at Austin.

She attended school in California, graduating from El Monte High School near Pasadena in 1933.

She returned to Minnesota where on Sept. 7, 1940, she married Alex Phillip Brandt at the Little Brown Church, near Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Austin until 1973, when they moved to Anoka to be closer to their children. Her husband, Alex, died Sept. 30, 1993.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon (Wayne) Rentz, Anoka; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary (Emily Carnesi) Brandt, Apple Valley; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Her parents; husband; two sisters, Helen Keen and Alice Brandt and two brothers, Harold "Clyde" Witham and one in infancy preceded her in death.

Service: 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Rice, Anoka, officiating.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Worlein Funeral Home of Austin and 8 a.m. until time of service Tuesday.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery.

Mary Emily Carlson, 77, died August 7, 2001.

She was born in Minneapolis to Eva and Elvin Wilson.

She worked as a bank teller and married Carl J. Carlson in 1949. The couple lived in Austin until her husband retired and spent time at Eagle River, Wis. and Rancho Viejo, Texas

He died in 1998.

Survivors include a son, Dan, and daughter-in-law, Nancy Carlson, London, England; a son David and daughter-in-law, Betsy, Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Patricia, and son-in-law, Stuart, Lakeway, Texas; two Godsons; a sister-in-law, Margie, and brother-in-law, Richard, of Rapid City, S.D. a sister-in-laur, Marilyn, Tucson, Ariz.

Service: Held Aug. 9, 2001, at Wellspring United Methodist Church, Georgetown, Texas.

Interment: Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, Wis.

Brian Lee Cordes

1964-2001

Brian Lee Cordes, 37, of Austin, and formerly of Winona, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester.

Brian was born on March 15, 1964, in Winona to Daniel and Shirley (Fjeld) Cordes.

He graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1982 and graduated from Winona State University. He was employed by I.B. Industries, of Brownsdale, with the sales and marketing division. Brian was well known for being an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

He is survived by his parents, Daniel and Shirley Cordes, Winona; one brother Scott Cordes, St. Paul; one sister, Christie Cordes, Winona; one niece; maternal grandmother, Alma Fjeld, Winona; paternal grandmother, Betty Cordes, Winona; aunts, uncles and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, John Fjeld, and paternal grandfather, William Cordes.

Service: 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, with the Rev. Michelle Rem of Central Lutheran Church, Winona, officiating.

Visitation: Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from noon to time of services.

Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.

Doris Irene Davis

1900-2001

BURIAL AT DEXTER

Doris Irene Davis, 101, of Elkton, died Monday Aug. 13, 2001, at Fieldcrest Nursing Home in Hayfield.

She was born Aug. 6, 1900, in Prophetstown, Illinois to John R. and Mary (Noon) Curley.

She married Benjamin Davis Nov. 26, 1919, in Farmington, Iowa. After living in Illinois for four years and Iowa for 24 years, Doris lived in Dexter.

She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, United Methodist Church of Dexter and past president of United Methodist Women.

Survivors include four daughters, June Philp, Tucson, Ariz.; Audrey (Dale) Rolfson, Bemidji; Beverly (Elvern) Mees, Dexter; Maxine (Robert) Thompson, Plymouth; fifteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; daughter, Jeanette Gilbert; her parents, six siblings; a grandson; two sons-in-law; three infant great-great-grandchildren.

Service: 11:00 a.m. Thursday Aug. 16, 2001, at United Methodist Church in Dexter with Pastor Tom Wilson officiating.

Visitation: Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and at the church one hour before the service on Thursday.

Bernadette Isabelle (Caron) Dvorak

1913-2001

Bernadette Isabelle Dvorak, 88, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.

She was born Jan. 6, 1913, in Currie, Minn., to George and Rosa Ann (Pommier) Caron.

She married Joseph P. Dvorak June 2, 1937, in St. Clothide Catholic Church in Green Valley, Minn.

She attended a country day school and as an adult, she earned her General Education Diploma.

She worked as a nurse's aid at Meadow Manor Nursing Home in Grand Meadow until retirement.

She was an active member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona and the Catholic Daughters of America.

She was a strong supporter of religious vocations.

She was a leader in the 4-H program for many years. She enjoyed reading, music, gardening, traveling, recycling, artistry and education.

She is survived by her eleven children, Mary Catherine Speltz and her husband, Cyril, Altura; Mary Josephine Goettl and her husband, Adrian, Mankato; Mary Rosalie Remis and her husband, Marc, Sacramento, Calif.; Mary Donata, Edina; Mary Frances, Haslett, Mich.; Joseph Patrick Dvorak and his wife, Elizabeth, Woodbury; Donald Joseph Dvorak and his wife, Barbara, Altura; Mary Bernadette Lammers and her husband, Paul, Adams; Anthony G. Dvorak and his wife, Janet, Waterloo, Iowa; David Patrick Dvorak, El Paso, Texas; and Mary Genevieve, Oakland, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward Caron, Minneota; three sisters, Irma Dvorak, Winona; Rachel Nosbusch, Marshall; Sister Severina Caron, OSF, Rochester; one brother-in-law, Edward Dvorak, Rushford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph in 1975; her parents; four sisters; three brothers and three grandchildren.

Service: 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at the Cathedral of Sacred Heart Church in Winona with the Rev. James W. Hennessey officiating.

Visitation: Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at the Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home. A rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m. followed by a Christian wake service at 7 p.m.

Interment: The body will be donated to Mayo Medical Foundation for medical research, per her request.

Frances Elizabeth (Erickson) Granholm

1915-2001

Frances Elizabeth Granholm, age 86, of Austin, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

She was born March 20, 1915, in Austin, to Andrew and Celia (Guttormson) Erickson.

She graduated from Austin High School on May 29, 1932. In 1933, she graduated from teachers training class and began teaching in Glenville at the age of 18. She also taught in rural schools in Brownsdale and Lyle until 1940.

She was married to Floyd Granholm on June 26, 1935, in Austin, where they continued to live. They had two children, Floyd Allen, born in 1946; and Darleen Cecelia, born in 1949.

Frances taught piano in her home for 22 years. She was also active in church and volunteer work, especially Kinship, an organization to benefit children between the ages of six and 18. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church until transferring her membership to Our Saviors Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and participated in Bible studies and women's activities.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Floyd Allen and Gina Granholm, of Lowell, Mich.; daughter and son-in-law, Darleen and Mark Ferrin, of Vadnais Heights, Minn.; sister, Irene Stanton, of San Diego, Calif.; six grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, in 1991, and two brothers.

Service: 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with the Rev. Glenn L. Monson officiating.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and on Friday, at the church, one hour before the service.

Interment: Private interment at Oakwood Cemetery.

Inez (nee Boelter) Gulbrandson

1913-2001

Inez Gulbrandson, 88, of Austin, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at Fieldcrest Nursing Home in Hayfield.

She was born May 18, 1913, in Rock Dell to William and Ida (Endresen) Boelter.

She married Oswald Gulbrandson June 3, 1953 in Albert Lea.

Inez was a retired employee of Hormel Foods.

Survivors include step-son, James and Vondean Gulbrandson, Austin; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oswald; one sister; and one brother.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Crane Community Chapel, with Pastor Randy Petersen officiating. Casket bearers will be Larry Arens, Eric Arens, Aaron Arens, James Gulbrandson, Terry Gulbrandson and David Hjelman.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service at Crane Chapel on Thursday.

Edith Hanson, 77, of Austin, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born April 18, 1924, in Dodge County to Henry and Catherine (Wittrock) Janning.

She married Archie L. Hanson, Jr. in Austin.

She was a retired employee of Hormel Foods.

Survivors include her husband, Archie L. Hanson; son and daughter-in-law, Edward Hanson and his wife, Joan, Onalaska, Wis.; a daughter, Cynthia Hanson, Hudson, Wis.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd Janning, Austin; Herbert Janning and his wife, Nona, Austin; Elmer Janning and his wife, Eileen, Blooming Prairie; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marietta Braun and her husband, Dan, Adams; Valeria Rauen, Stacyville, Iowa.

Marcella "Arch" Heimer, 73, of Austin, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 22, 1927, in Sioux Falls, S.D. to William and Margaret (Wilkerson) Diggins.

She married Cletus Heimer at Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Esther (Tollerud) Hildreth

1903-2001

Esther Hildreth, 97, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

She was born Oct. 22, 1903, in Lansing Township, Mower County, to Otto and Stina (Peterson) Tollerud.

She attended rural school and Austin High School.

She was employed as a secretary at the Austin Medical Clinic.

She married Clifford W. Hildreth in 1935 at Austin.

She was a volunteer with the Mower County chapter of the American Red Cross for 40 years and a life member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Survivors include sister-in-law, Catherine Tollerud, Minneapolis; nephew and wife, Ralph and Clara Noble, Austin; nieces and husbands, Joanne and Kenneth Schlisler, San Antonio, Texas, Yvonne and Lloyd Hammer, Austin; and great- and great, great- nieces and nephews.

Service: 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, graveside services at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin and a 2 p.m. memorial service also Monday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kristin K. Wee officiating. Earl H. Huffman

1923-2001

Earl H. Huffman, 77, of Lake City, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at the Lake City Hospital.

He was born September 15, 1923, in Ames, Iowa to Oscar and Agnes (Freiheit) Huffman. He grew up in Cherry Grove, Minnesota.

He married Eldora Waletzki March 11, 1944, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church. The couple lived in Austin, where Earl owned and operated Huffman Moving and Storage. He sold the business and retired in 1979.

The couple then moved to Lake City where Earl worked for the city Park and Recreation Department and for Heat-n-Glo until retiring in February 2001.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake City.

Survivors include his wife, Eldora Huffman; two sons, Robert E. Huffman and his wife, Sharon, Austin; Randy L. Huffman and his wife, Elaine, Austin; one daughter, Penny C. Montgomery and her husband, Darrell, Zumbrota; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four brothers, Roy Huffman and his wife, Nita, Austin; Harold Huffman, Austin; Duane Huffman and his wife, Marilyn, Austin; Ronald Huffman and his wife, Barb, Austin; three sisters, Maxine Brady and her husband, Rolland, Austin; Viola Deyo and her husband, Bob, St. Paul; Wanita Pfeifer and her husband, Eugene, Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and one sister.

Charles Walter Kelm

1919-2001

Charles Walter Kelm, age 81, of Austin, died Monday, August 20, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born October 20, 1919, in Chanhassen Township, Carver County, Minn., to Herman A. and Lydia (Prodahl) Kelm.

He attended Albany schools and helped on the family farm until entering the U.S. Army August 31, 1942. Attaining the rank of Tech 5th grade with Battery B533 anti-aircraft artillery, he served in the European Theater. After he was discharged November 1, 1945, Charles returned to Minnesota where owned and operated a trucking business. He moved to Austin in 1975 and continued to drive truck until his retirement.

A member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Sargeant, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and playing cards.

Survivors include his very dear love, Jeanette Lemke, Austin; sons, Gerald "Jerry" Kelm, Hopkins; Robert Kelm, Hopkins; Dennis Kelm, Eden Prairie; Ronald Kelm, Waite Park; four grandchildren; sister, Erma Hodel, Foley; sisters-in-law, Verna Kelm and Loretta Kelm, both of Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Earl and Harold Kelm; grandson, Jason Kelm.

Service: Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sargeant with Pastor Ron Prigge officiating.

Visitation: Friends may greet the family one hour before the service. There will be no reviewal.

Funeral Home: Worlein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie (Bartels) Kuehn

1920-2001

Marjorie Kuehn, 80, of Rochester, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at the nursing home in Ostrander.

She was born Sept. 11, 1920, in Zumbro Falls to Gust and Anna Bartels. She grew up in Zumbro Falls.

She married Charles Kuehn March 16, 1943, at the Lincoln Lutheran Church, Gillford Township, Wabasha County.

The couple lived in California and Utah for years. They moved to Austin in 1953.

They moved to Spring Valley and opened Kuehn Motors. They moved to Lake City in 1977.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester.

Survivors include her sons, Charles Kuehn, Jr., and his wife, Vickie, Rochester; Richard Kuehn and his wife, Judy, Rochester; Tom Kuehn and his wife, Connie, Spring Valley; Jon Kuehn and his wife, Dana, Spring Valley; and Mark Kuehn and his friend, Karen, Oronoco; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Virgil Bartels, Zumbro Falls; a sister, Ruth Luhman and her husband, Donald, Fergus Falls.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Service: 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester with the Rev. John Schleicher officiating.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. at Ranfranz Funeral Home in Rochester.

Edward Donald Larkin

1924-2001

Edward Donald Larkin, 76 of Austin, Minnesota, died at his home Thursday evening, August 2, 2001.

He was born October 7, 1924, to Ernest and Anna (Rodell) Larkin in Austin.

He attended Austin schools and joined the U.S. Army June 12, 1943 and was stationed in the Philippine Islands, during World War II. He was awarded a Purple Heart medal after being wounded in the Battle of the Philippines and discharged April 5, 1947.

He married Doris Meyer June 1, 1947 at Austin.

A Hormel Foods Corporation employee for 39 years, he enjoyed sports, belonged to the Crane Community Chapel bowling team, was a 4-H softball team coach and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Larkin, Austin; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda (Mike) McGonigle, East Moline, Illinois; Annice Larkin, St. Paul; Marsha (Lowell) Tangen, New Prague; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in law, Robert (Georgia) Larkin, Austin; Harry (Dorothy) Larkin, Albert Lea; sisters, Delores Coons, Onamia; Shirley (Virgil) Ryan, Albert Lea.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 6, 2001 at Grace Baptist Church of Austin with the Rev. Gordon Larson officiating.

Visitation: 2-4 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2001, at Worlein Funeral Home of Austin and at the church one hour before the service Monday.

Interment: Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001.

Alvira (Peterson) Lembrick

1913-2001

Alvira Lembrick, 88, of Austin, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

She was born Feb. 16, 1913, in Minneapolis to Elmer and Mattie (Jasperson) Peterson.

She married Phillip Lembrick on Sept. 4, 1936. He died June 10, 1998.

She was a lifetime member of Congregational Church, where she taught Sunday school, served as a deacon and was on a pastor search committee. She also was a representative to the National Convention of the Congregational Church in 1952.

She enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting and reading.

Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Carole Lembrick, Austin; Roger and JoAnn Lembrick, Stevenson, Wash.; sister, Margery Williams, Corpus Christi, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Viva Bumgarner, Austin; Anna Behal, Houston, Texas; Margaret Steege, Benton, Pa.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001 at Mayer Funeral Home with Chaplain Cathy Mannel officiating. Casket bearers will be Alan Fehr, Bradley Gansen, David Bumgarner, Allen Rawn, Marvin Ellingson and Larry Wilson.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday and one hour before the Tuesday service at Mayer Funeral Home.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery.

Evelyn C. (Carlock) Madson

1913-2001

Evelyn C. Madson, 88, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Apple Valley Health Care Center.

Evelyn Carlock was born April 4, 1913, to Ralph and Hazel Carlock.

Survivors include daughters, Audrey Johnson and her husband, Jerry, Eden Prairie; Sharon Boatman and her husband, Dave, Rosemount; JoAnne McAlister and her husband, Wayne, California; a son, Derald Madson and his wife, Dorothy; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Martin; a brother, Lyman Carlock and his wife, Jane; brothers-in-law, Harold "Happy" Fessler; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1977.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Valley Christian Church on Cedar Avenue and Glacier Way, Apple Valley with the Rev. James Conner officiating.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today at Henry W. Anderson mortuary, Apple Valley and a half hour before services at church tomorrow.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery

Patricia Ann Markgraf

1952-2001

Patricia Ann Markgraf, age 49, of Burnsville, formerly of Austin, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001 at her home after a long illness.

She was born Sept. 13, 1952, in Austin, to Allan and Anne (Malloy) Markgraf.

Patricia was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. She graduated from Austin High School in 1971 and trained in Quantico, Va. to become a security guard for the federal government in Eagan. She later worked at Douglas Manufacturing until 1982.

Survivors include her parents, Allan and Anne Markgraf of Austin; sister, Pam (Michael) Maxwell of Adrian, Mich.; brother, Michael Markgraf of Austin; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; uncle, Neil Markgraf; and an aunt, Evelyn Markgraf.

Service: Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday in Westby Chapel at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with The Reverend Kristin K. Wee officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Funeral Home: Worlein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
