Barbara Ann (Richardson) Bell

ca 1960-2003

Barbara Ann Richardson Bell, age 42, died peacefully at her home on April 12, 2003, after a long battle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Ann Elizabeth Richardson Pfenning.

She is survived by her husband, Lee Bell; daughters, Jessica and Ashley Bell; mother and stepfather, Mary Jane and Dr. Merrill K. Smith; father and stepmother, Robert and Beverly Richardson; sister, Mary Jane Riley; many friends, her Great Dane dog and four cats.

Barb's life added beauty and richness to this earth and she will be missed by all who knew her.

Memorials can be made to either The American Cancer Society or the Bell family. The viewing will be Wednesday, April 16, 2003, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Crystal Lake Funeral Home, 3816 Penn Avenue North, Minneapolis. A celebration service will be held April 17, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at The Youth Performance Company, 3338 University SE, Minneapolis.

Harry N. AmEnd

1933-2003

Harry Norman AmEnd, age 69, of Austin, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at his home.

He was born June 9, 1933, in Pacific Grove, Calif., to Victor and Clara (Steeve) AmEnd.

He graduated from the Vallejo High School, Vallejo, Calif. in 1951 and attended Sacramento State College, Sacramento, Calif. and Mankato State University, Mankato, obtaining a master of English degree. He served in the US Army from 1955 to 1958. He was a retired instructor of Austin Community College where he taught English and Humanities.

Harry was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and enjoyed classical music and reading.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Stohlmann officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, 14745 Cty Road #153, Cologne, Minn. Friends may call for one hour before the service at the church.

Casket bearers will be Ed Solberg, Frank Bridges, Allen Schulz, Dave Ruzek, Victor Rolf and Douglas AmEnd.

Harry is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Merlyn Gutz of Austin, Minn.; nieces, Lois Gutz Green of Waukesha, Wis., Ann Gutz Kirchner of Denver, Colo.; nephews, the Rev. John Gutz of Streator, Ill., the Rev. Glen Gutz of Hoskins, Neb.; special friends, Sue Taylor of Austin, Minn., and Athena Rosenthal and family of Austin, Minn.

Richard Scott Brooks

1950-2003

Richard Scott Brooks, 52, of Austin, Minnesota, died at his home.

He was born Oct. 12, 1950, in Austin, to George and Dorothy (Stanek) Brooks.

He graduated from Austin High School in 1969. He served in the United States Air Force. He was married and later divorced.

Scott was a peace officer with the Austin Police Department and the Minneapolis Police Department. He also had worked for the Bremmer County Florida Sheriff's Department. The last three years he was a security guard for Rochester Armored Cars.

Survivors include his ex-wife, Trina Brooks, Bolingbrook, Ill.; son, Andrew Brooks, Bolingbrook, Ill.; daughter, Erica Brooks, Bolingbrook, Ill.; brother and sister-in-law, Mick and Janine Brooks, Austin.

He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.

Service: 1 p.m. memorial service Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the funeral home with Rev. Forrest Miller officiating.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery.

Eugene Clennon

1944-2003

Eugene (Pat) Clennon passed away at his home April 12, 2003, of cancer. He was surrounded by his family.

He was born to Eugene M. Clennon and Mary Lou (Dahmen) on Aug. 12, 1944, in Austin, Minn. He graduated from Austin High School in June 1962. He played varsity football and was also president of his class two years.

He enlisted in the Navy in July 1963, serving on the USS Independence during the Vietnam War. He received the Navy Commendation ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with a Bronze Star, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He was discharged in July 1967.

He married Louise Bednar in January 1966. They had four sons. After being discharged from the Navy he was co-owner of Star Music & Vending and later Echo Lanes Bowling Center. He was last employed by United Building Centers, Austin, Minn. He belonged to American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.

He is survived by his father, Gene (Donna), Austin, Minn; mother, Mary Lou Clennon, Simpsonville, S.C.; brothers, Rodney Clennon, Greenville, S.C.; Scott (Trace), Columbia, S.C.; stepbrother, David (Becca) Voss; stepsister, Susan (Howard) Voss-Smith; former wife, Louise Clennon, Austin, Minn.; sons, Shane (Jennifer) Clennon, Fargo, N.D.; Todd (DeAnna) Clennon, Austin; Tom Clennon, Montana; and Jon (Stacy) Clennon, Mason City, Iowa; Joseph Patrick Tabor. He was also survived by long time companion, Kathy Tabor and family Chris Tabor, Viola Tabor, Bonnie Tabor, all of Austin; 11 grandchildren; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was a loving father, son, and brother who enjoyed family gatherings, hunting, fishing, and camping. His kindness, smile, and good humor will long be remembered by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Austin, Minn. Visitation with the family will be one hour before service. Worlein Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 91.

Roger D. Harding

1936-2003

Roger D. Harding, 66, of Nashua, Iowa, died of cancer Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at his home.

He was born June 5, 1936, in Taopi, to Leonard and Myrtle (Rogne) Harding.

He graduated from Adams High School in 1954 and served one enlistment in the US Navy, being honorably discharged Dec. 3 1957.

On June 28, 1958, he married Theresa A. Koenigs in Rochester. Roger drove truck for Osmundson Bros. in Adams for one year. The couple then moved to Charles City, Iowa where Roger started working for Oliver/ White Farm Corp. as a machinist. In 1960, they moved to Nashua, Iowa and Roger continued to work for Oliver/ White farm Corp. until the plant closed in 1993.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, all types of sporting events and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa, Nashua, Iowa; daughter, Kathleen (Alan) Humiston, St. Paul; one grandson; sister, Betty (Mabry) Taylor, Spring Valley.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. today, April 11, 2003, with a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7:30 p.m. scripture service and on Saturday from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Nashua, Iowa.

Interment: St. Michael's Cemetery, Nashua, Iowa, with military rites by the Nashua VFW Post #4792.

Vera I. (Anderson) Johnson

1914-2003

Vera I. Johnson, 89, of Austin, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at her home.

She was born March 1, 1914, in Hokah, to Peter and Elizabeth (Hirt) Anderson. She attended school in Hokah.

In June of 1935, she married Erwin Johnson.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and Unity Chapter #29 Order of the Eastern Star. Vera enjoyed flowers and gardening, spending time at the couple's cabin on Tetonka Lake, Waterville, and spending time with her great-grandchildren.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Wayne Prigge, Anchorage, Alaska; Ruth and Dennis Palmer, Brainerd; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Della and Grant Shorrel, Trempealeau, Wis.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson Michael Palmer, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation: Monday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2003, at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Andrew M. Lindahl officiating. Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Dorris Evelyn (nee Birdsell) Kofron

1916-2003

Dorris Evelyn Kofron, age 86, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at her home. Dorris was born June 10, 1916, in Mason City, Iowa, to Marx and Edith (Lomen) Birdsell. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1933 and married Don Kofron on May 11, 1941. Following their marriage, Dorris and Don lived in California, New Mexico and Mississippi during Don's pilot Air Force training. After World War II, they lived in Iowa City where their son Phillip was born in 1947. In 1950, Dorris and Don moved to Austin where they have resided for 53 years.

Dorris led a full, rich life as a dedicated wife, mother, friend, homemaker, and co-founder of the Windfall Shop in Austin. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for many years and sang in the church choir. Dorris greatly enjoyed the Colorado mountains and the ocean, gardening and flowers, golf, playing bridge, reading, cooking, ideas, playing the piano, conversation, art and music, and travel in the States and abroad.

Dorris was known for her caring and supportive ways and also for her easy laughter and entertaining humor and wit. She created a loving, beautiful home for her family and friends. Dorris was a fine person and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her husband Don, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Marilynn, Minneapolis, Minn.; sister, Mildred Pattschull, Clear Lake, Iowa; brother and sister-in-law, Don and June Birdsell, Clear Lake, Iowa; five nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Marx and Edith Birdsell; sister, Lucille Trimble; brothers-in-law, Dale Pattschull, Wayne Long, and Turner Trimble.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2003, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Pat Toschak officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Duane Ronald Langerud

1931-2003

Duane Ronald Langerud, 71, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at the Lee Memorial Health Park, Ft. Meyers, Fla. of a heart ailment.

He was born April 21, 1931, in rural Leland, Iowa, to Maynard S. and Ruth (Arnevik) Langerud.

He farmed west of Lake Mills and was a sergeant in the Korean War. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, and the Hope Lutheran Church, Estero, Fla.

As a member of North Prairie Church since baptism and confirmation, he actively served in various church offices and as Luther League Advisor. In Florida, he was studying to become a Stephens Minister.

Duane started to play duplicate bridge with his wife, Myrna, after retirement. He was a master player and an American Contract Bridge League National Club director.

Survivors include his wife, Myrna Langerud, Lake Mills, Iowa and Estero, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Mary Langerud, Plymouth; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Jay Benzshawel, West Des Moines, Iowa; Amber and Jeff Hollar, West Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Calmer and Muriel Langerud, Clear Lake, Iowa; Ernest and Sue Langerud, Lake Mills, Iowa; David Langerud, Minneapolis; sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Jim Bevan, Ottumwa.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial Service: 2 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2003, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa with Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating and military rites by Lake Mills Otto/ Chose Post #235.

Interment: At a later date in Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills, Iowa.

Joyce Gertrude (nee Renwick) Parish

1935-2003

Joyce Gertrude Parish, 67, of Northfield and formerly of Austin, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the Northfield Care Center.

She was born July 11, 1935, in Darwin, to Charles and Ursula (Arens) Renwick. At a young age, her family moved to Austin where she spent her childhood and attended school, graduating from St. Augustine High School in Austin. On October 2, 1954, she married Donald Maxfield Parish. They made their home in Northfield.

Survivors include daughters, Kathy (Tom) Elias, Cannon Falls, and Mary (David) Olson, Waterville; sons, Mike, Welches, Ore., and David, Northfield; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ernestine Renwick, La Crosse, Wis.; and special family friend Earl Erickson.

She was preceded in death by husband, Donald; sister, Donna Hogan; and brother, Charles Renwick.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 6, 2003, at the funeral home and one hour before the service Monday at the church.

Service: 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield.

Interment: Hillcrest Cemetery.

Linda Jean (nee Young) Peterson

1939-2003

Linda Jean (Mrs. Douglas) Peterson, age 63, of Austin died at Austin Medical Center, Thursday evening, April 10, 2003.

She was born Sept. 9, 1939, in Kansas City, Mo., to Charles B. and Jean (Garrison) Young. Linda and her family lived in Kansas and Nebraska until she was 8 years old. They moved to Windom, Minn., in 1947. In 1957 they moved to Worthington where Linda graduated from high school and she was Clerk of Probate for five years.

On Oct. 20, 1962, she married Douglas Peterson. After they took up residence in Austin, Linda worked at Sterling Bank from 1963 until 1974 when she went to work for Norwest Bank as a secretary for three presidents. In 1986 she left the bank due to health problems. A homemaker for 12 years, Linda was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and loved working with the children at Holy Cross School and also enjoyed music.

Survivors include husband, Douglas Peterson of Austin; son, Brett (Tina) Peterson of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter, Melissa (Michael) McMillan of Minnetonka; three grandchildren, Jordan and Evan Peterson, Audrey McMillan; mother, Jean Young of Worthington; two brothers, Larry Young of Sibley, Iowa; Paul (Deb) Young of Mankato; nieces, nephews, cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father and her grandparents.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, April 14, 2003, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Stohlmann officiating. Worlein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation or reviewal. The family prefers memorials to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or School.

William F. Rabine

1932-2003

William F. Rabine, 71, of Austin, Minnesota and formerly of Elkton and Fifty Lakes, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, after cardiac arrest.

He was born March 31, 1932, in Dexter, to William and Elna (Rubin) Rabine. He attended Elkton School. He moved to St. Paul after the death of his father and was employed at Perfection Type.

On June 2, 1951, he married Betty Hoppin at the Dexter United Methodist Church.

After moving back to the Elkton area, William owned and operated a service station, drove school bus and was a bulk delivery dealer for Osmundson Oil Company for over 30 years. Following William's retirement in 1994, the couple moved to Fifty Lakes, returning to Austin in 2000 to be near family.

Survivors include wife, Betty Rabine, Austin; daughters, Valerie (David) Rabine-Young, Austin; Vicki (Peter) Kuhlmann, Rose Creek; Vanette (Jeff Sherman), Byron; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; mother, Elna Deyo, Austin; sisters, Arlene (Harvey) Buchite, Fifty Lakes; Inez (Gary) Schutte, Cambridge; father-in-law, George Hoppin, Austin; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, George Hoppin, Jr., Austin; William Hoppin, Rockford, Iowa; Douglas and Joan Hoppin, Salem, Ore.; Ruth and Dale Allen, West Concord.

He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Bruce.

Merwin E. Read

(died 2003)

Merwin E. Read, age 66, of Woodbury, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, has passed away.

He is the beloved husband for 47 years of Gloria; loving father of Kim (Tom) Griffiths, Deb (Larry) Shafranski, and Scott (Theresa) Read; devoted grandfather of Shannon, Lindsay, Joe, Zach, Katie, Andy and Maggie. He is also survived by sisters, Faye Strouf, Betty Neddersen, Joyce Duren, Marilyn Reuter, Bernice Konken, Sharon Emhke, Shirley Jendersee, Bonnie Block and Sandra Olsen; brother, Jerry Read; and many special nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Phyllis.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 9, at 11:30 a.m. at Lutheran Church of Peace, 47 South Century Ave., St Paul. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Union Cemetery.

Carl William Rowe

1909-2003

Carl William Rowe, 93, of Owatonna, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at Prairie Manor.

He was born Oct. 26, 1909, near Hampton, Iowa, to Edward and Clara (Boelk) Rowe. He grew up in the Hampton, Iowa, Superior, Wis., and Austin areas as a farmer.

On June 12, 1941, he married Violet Lundene in Austin. They lived and farmed in southern Minnesota and moved to Otranto, Iowa in 1951. They moved to Owatonnna in 1967. Carl became a welder at Kurnmeth Mfg. and later at Muckle Mfg.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, working in the yard and garden, and feeding the birds.

Survivors include wife, Violet Rowe, Owatonna; son, David Rowe, San Jose, Calif.; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two step great-granddaughters; one step great-great granddaughter; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Carolyn; three brothers and one sister.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2003, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna with the Rev. John Lestock officiating.

Interment: Enterprise Cemetery, Lyle.

Vila J. K. (Kiel) Thompson

1925-2003

Vila "Vi" June Kiel Thompson, 77, of Austin, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at the Sacred Heart Care Center following a long illness.

Vi was born Nov. 26, 1925, in Decorah, Iowa, to Julius and Josephine (Kolseth) Kiel. She graduated from Calmar High School in 1943. She received a teaching certificate from Luther College and was a teacher in Jackson, Minn. for five years before returning to Luther to complete her B.A. in 1951. She served the Austin Public Schools from 1951 to 1985 as both elementary teacher and librarian, having received her library certification from the University of Minnesota.

While teaching at Shaw Schools, she met Sterling Thompson, a fellow teacher and the love of her life. They were married June 28, 1958.

Vi modeled servant leadership as a devoted member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and was active in the Austin community through the Austin Education Association, Sons of Norway, Retired Teachers, Austin Audubon Club, YMCA, Cotillion Dance Group, and as a volunteer with the Austin Medical Clinic and Austin schools. She was named Mower County Outstanding Senior Citizen in 2000.

She and Sterling were loyal alumni of Luther College, co-chairing an Austin area fund drive and co-hosting Lutherlag. In 2000, Luther College recognized their commitment to church and society with the Distinguished Service Award.

In her leisure, Vi enjoyed bridge, theater, canoeing, reading, travel, cooking, entertaining, nature, and exercising at the "Y."

She is survived by her husband, Sterling; sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Ed Maalo, Iola, Wis.; sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Linus Rothmeyer, Calmar, Iowa; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Crystal (Thompson) and Al Braner, Belmond, Iowa; nieces, Sue Rothmeyer, River Forest, Ill.; Marianne Overland, Lake Mills, Iowa; nephews, Bill Herwig, Glen Ellyn, Ill.; Kevin Braner, Walhalla, S.C.; and Scott Braner, Marshall, Mich.

She is preceded in death by her parents and nephew, Kurt Maalo.

Vi will be remembered for her vivacious and tenacious spirit, her compassionate commitment to family, friends, church, and community, and her warm-hearted hugs.

A memorial service will the held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with the Revs. Glenn Monson, Don Deines and Dan Kahl of officiating. There will be no reviewal on Saturday.

A visitation and reviewal with be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Sterling and Vi Thompson scholarship fund at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, or the Oglala/ Lakota College in Kyle, S.D.

Leone (nee Gallagher) Vaughan

1905-2003

Leone Vaughan, 97, of Gillette, Wyoming, and formerly Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home, Gillette, from natural causes.

She was born June 12, 1905, to Martin and Hannah (Convey) Gallagher in Waseca County. She graduated from Bethlehem Academy High School in Faribault.

For a short time, Leone worked in a shoe factory before marrying Joseph Vaughan on May 23, 1925, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Janesville. The couple moved to Austin to raise their family, and resided there for 37 years.

When Joseph and Leone retired in 1962, they moved to Mesa, Ariz. Due to Joseph's health they moved to Casper, Wyo. in 1972 to be near family. He passed away Nov. 10, 1973. Leone continued to live in Casper for another 10 years, moving to Gillette, Wyo. in 1983.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women in Gillette, Wyo. She enjoyed baking, crocheting, playing the board game SCRABBLE. Leone also enjoyed playing the card game Minnesota 500 with Father Kadera from St. Matthew's.

Georgia Lynn Byrnes, 61, of Lyle, died July 22, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

She was born Nov. 3, 1941, in Indio, Calif.

On May 28, 1977, she married Robert L. Byrnes at South Shore Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Georgia worked for Bank of America in San Francisco, was a branch manager of First Hawaiian Bank in Napili, Hawaii and later was the librarian at Lyle Public Library.

She enjoyed her crafts, sewing, PPH Support Group, Lyle Study Club, traveling and her animals.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Byrnes, Lyle; sons, Michael (Amy Davidson) Fike, Glendale, Ariz.; Doug (Lorrie) Fike, Petaluma, Calif.; Jeffrey (Teresa Jenson) Neese, Lyle; daughters, Michelle Davis, Royalton; Merideth Fike, Chicago, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; brother, Greg (Anna) LeVezu, Beaumont, Calif.; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

1913-2003

Margaret G. (Norton) Combs, 90, of Austin, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 14, 1913, in Windom, to James and Laura (Dickman) Norton. Their family included five boys and five girls.

In 1929, she married Kenneth M. Combs. He died May 7, 2000.

Margaret belonged to the Philomathian Club and St. Elizabeth Rosary Group at St. Augustine Catholic Church. She loved reading, camping, country music, gardening and keeping up on world news. She especially enjoyed her family.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Jo Edwards, Austin; Carolyn Taber, Austin; Betty (Jack) Beecroft, Amery, Wis.; Helen (John) Scheid, Rochester; Margaret (Don) Pell, Santa Ana, Calif.; son, Bill (Holly) Combs, Mariposa, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Combs, Des Moines, Iowa; 26 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, a son, a daughter, five brothers and four sisters.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, with a 7:30 p.m. wake service and Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

1924-2003

Clifford A. DeFor, 78, of Austin, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at his home.

He was born August 8, 1924, in Austin, to Floyd and Emma (Hansen) DeFor. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946.

On Dec. 17, 1944, he married Josephine Butcher in Worthington.

Clifford worked at Prudential as an insurance agent for many years before the couple owned an antique store called The Curiosity Shop.

Clifford was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Odd Fellows Lodge, Olaf B. Damn Post #1216 V.F.W. and Austin Post # 91 American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine DeFor, Austin; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Red Levorson, Northwood, Iowa; Paula and Robert Martinsen, Lyle; sons and daughter-in-law, Donald DeFor, Austin; Clifford and Meg DeFor, Prior Lake; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; sisters-in-law, Ethel DeFor, New Hope; Erna Walker, Austin; nieces, nephews and cousins

1987-2003

Brett Michael Earl, age 16, formerly of Austin, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the Plano Medical Center in Plano, Texas.

Brett was born Jan. 6, 1987, in St. Croix Falls, Wis., to Joseph M. and Karen A. (DeLaney) Earl. Brett was a junior at Plano East Senior High School.

He enjoyed flying and building model airplanes, remote controlled cars, trucks, tanks and rockets. He was a member at North Dallas Radio Control Club.

Brett lived his short life to the fullest possible potential above and beyond. Many lives have been touched and changed by meeting this exceptional angel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; and three brothers.

Survivors include her son, Marvin (Barb); grandsons, Carl (Jayne), Stephen (Justine), Donald (Theresa) and James (Julie); four great-grandchildren, Douglas and Conner, and Amanda and Isaiah; sister, Esther Fardahl; many nieces and nephews.

She was a member of Elim Lutheran Church.

Interment was at Little Cedar Cemetery, Adams, Minn. Services were held Saturday, July 19, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. with visitation one hour before the service at the Washburn-McReavy Robbinsdale Chapel.

Angela Josephine Fink, 94, of Waseca, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at the Lake Shore Inn Nursing Home in Waseca.

She was born May 20, 1908, in Rose Creek, to John and Anna (Cress) Fink. She graduated from Rose Creek High School and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Theresa in Winona, majoring in Latin and English. Her first year after college, she taught school in Onaka, S.D. She moved to Waseca in 1940, where she began a long career at the Waseca Public Library, retiring in 1983. She was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca.

Survivors include sister, Sr. Marie Fink O.S.F., Assisi Heights, Rochester; nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Walter and Edward Fink; sisters, Katherine Schammel, Genevieve in infancy, Loretta Weber, Pauline Fink.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the church.

Service: 10:30 a.m. memorial mass, Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca with Fr. John Kunz officiating.

After her death in July of 2002, Angela willed her body to the Mayo Foundation in Rochester for use in the advancement of medical science.

N. Wyelene Fredericksen

1914-2003

N. Wyelene Frederick-sen, 88, of Owatonna died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Cedarview Nursing Home.

Wyelene was born July 28, 1914, in Lincoln Township, Lake Crystal, Blue Earth County, Minn., to Frederick A. and Nina I. (Addleman) Fredericksen. She taught elementary education and art at Dodge Center, Minn., and Clarion, Iowa. In 1944-45 she was an occupational therapist in Boston. She taught in Fairmont and then spent a year at the University of Minnesota getting a master's degree. In 1950-51 Wyelene taught at the American Military Dependents School in Heidelberg, Germany. She was an elementary art supervisor at Austin Public Schools for 25 years until her retirement in 1976. She has been an Owatonna resident for the past 17 years.

She traveled in Europe, Mexico, Venezuela, and across the United States. She was a member of the Austin and Owatonna Retired Teachers Associations.

Wyelene is survived by her sisters, Elsie Williams of Lake Crystal, Minn., Frances (and George) McGuire of Litchfield, Minn., and Nada (and Donald) Wiggins of Owatonna, Minn.; nieces and nephews, Jean (and Ray) Hanson of Apple Valley, Dennis (and Joan) Fredericksen of Rapid City, S.D., Douglas (and Nancy) Fredericksen of Lake Crystal, Larry (and Judy) McGuire of Litchfield, Marilyn (and Doug) Kronbeck of Red Wing, Kathy (and Ken) Johnson of Danube, Fred (and Becky) McGuire of Anchorage, Alaska, Jana (and Monte) White of Cottage Grove, Diana (and John) Vasicek of Vadnais Heights, Laurie Stewart of Owatonna, Jeff (and Shari) Wiggins of Minneapolis and many great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother and sister-in-law, Earle and Marge Fredericksen.

Visitation will be held at Michaelson Funeral Home, 1930 Austin Road, Owatonna, from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 13 and an hour before the service on Monday. Funeral services will be at Michaelson Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 14. Interment will be at the Lake Crystal Cemetery on Monday, July 14 at 2:30 p.m.

Norval Owen Golberg

1923-2003

Norval Owen Golberg, 80, of Stewartville, died Thursday July 3, 2003, after a long duration of cancer in his home in Rock Dell Township.

He was born May 13, 1923, in Rock Dell Township. He was married May 3, 1944, to Marie Margie Herrick at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester.

He grew up on the family farm and attended rural schools. After his marriage, the couple farmed in Rock Dell Township all of their married lives. He enjoyed polka dancing, auctions, his grandsons, Golberg Racing and his friends at the Rochester VFW Club.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Rock Dell, the Minneapolis Polka Club of America, former member of the National Farmers Organization, was a leader of the Rock Dell Indians 4H Club, past member of the Izaak Walton League and was recognized as the longest patron of the Rock Dell Creamery.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Diane (Harvey) Boysen, Rock Dell; sons, Lon (Julie) and Mark (Karen) Golberg, Rock Dell; Joe (Debra) Golberg, Fountain Hills, Ariz.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lavaine Kruger and Lorretta Brown, both of Austin.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2003, until 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at the church Tuesday one hour before the service.

Raymond E. Gullickson

Raymond Engh Gullickson, 78, of Austin, died at Austin Medical Center Wednesday evening, July 23, 2003. He was born January 30, 1925, to George and Valborg (Engh) Gullickson in Spring Valley, Minn., where he lived until 1943. Ray served in the United States Army during WWII. He was wounded in the Philippines on Leyte, receiving the Purple Heart.

Ray lived in Minneapolis from 1946 until 1950 and married Dorothy Gene Andersen on September 16, 1950, in Pillager, Minn. They made their home in Austin where he was employed by Hormel Foods Corporation as a mechanical engineer until 1966 and transferred to Fort Dodge, Iowa, and back to Austin in 1973. He retired in 1986. A member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, Ray belonged to Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion Post No. 91, University of Minnesota Alumni Association, Habitat for Humanity, Masonic Lodge, Golden K Kiwanis Club and 96th Infantry Division Association.

Ray was a quiet, gentle-natured, generous man. He enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, fishing trips to Canada, wintering in Texas, annual Army reunions, and especially enjoyed singing with the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Choir for almost 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Austin; daughters, Carol (Jim) Altergott of Wichita, Kan.; Joan Gullickson of Owatonna; son, David Gullickson of Minneapolis; two grandchildren; one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George; and infant son James.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 28, 2003, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roberta Flood and the Rev. Raymond Engh co-officiating. Erland Peder Christian Christiansen Hedegard, 84, of Borden, Indiana, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany.

A native of Dexter, Minn., he was a resident of Washington County, Indiana for 23 years. He was an Army Air Force gunnery instructor, stationed in Las Vegas, Nev., during World War II. A graduate of Hamline University, St. Paul, Erland devoted his life to education. He was a retired superintendent of schools, having served in Russell, Wrenshall, Alberta, Byron and Rose Creek, Minn. He also spent several years as a sales representative for AAL Life Insurance in St. Paul, Minn. He was a volunteer fireman for 35 years and a Bell Award recipient for his contribution to community service in Indiana.

Erland was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Georgetown, Ind.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marjorie M. Coats Hedegard; four sons, E. Christian Hedegard, II, of Hastings, Minn., Kelly Hedegard of Scottsdale, Ariz., Kyle Hedegard of Salem, Ind., and Kent Hedegard of Borden, Ind.; two daughters, Karla Hedegard and Kari Hedegard, both of Borden; one sister, Viola Hodge of Austin, Minn.; seven grandchildren, C. Mack Hedegard, Haley Hedegard, Megan Hedegard, Wade, Peter and Daniel Hedegard; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.

A memorial service was held on Friday, June 13, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. His body was cremated, with a private burial in Martinsburg, Ind. Hughes Taylor Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Chester Henry "Chet" Heinzel

1913-2003

Chester "Chet" Henry Heinzel, 90, of Austin, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

He was born May 7, 1913, to Herman and Helen (Daubanton) Heinzel in Sauk Rapids.

On June 6, 1939, he married Mabel Elizabeth Marks in Kingston.

Chet served in the U.S. Army as a bandmaster for 26 years. His last tour of duty was with the U.S. Army Band in Washington, D.C. After his discharge from the Army, Chet and Mabel lived in California for many years, returning to Minnesota in 1990. Chet belonged to the American Legion in Sauk Rapids.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel Heinzel, Austin; son, Gary (Nancy) Heinzel, Austin; daughter, Sara Heinzel, Penn Valley, Calif.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Edward Heinzel, Las Vegas, Nev.

Martin E. Jensen, 72, died July 7, 2003, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

He was born May 19, 1931, to Martin and Mary Jensen in Austin, where he attended school.

He worked for Hormel as district manager in Buffalo, N.Y. until he and his wife, Carol (Hemmer) Jensen, retired to Las Vegas.

Norma O. Jorgenson, age 73, of Austin, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at St. Marks Lutheran Home.

She was born March 30, 1930, in Scarville, Iowa, to Edward and Minnie (Olson) Stalheim. She attended school in Scarville and graduated from Lake Mills High School.

Norma was married to LuVerne E. Jorgenson on Sept. 10, 1947, in Albert Lea, Minn. They resided in Austin where Norma worked for 29 years as a nursing assistant at St. Marks Lutheran Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Frances, Esther, Agnes and Hazel; and brother: Arnie.

Private family services will be held with interment at Grandview Cemetery with Cathy Mannel officiating

She is survived by her husband: LuVeme E. Carol LaBonna (nee Seavey) Klein

1934-2003

Carol LaBonna Klein, age 69, of Austin, Minnesota died on Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at her home.

Carol was born Jan. 1, 1934, in Waltham, Minn., to Evered and Esther (Badenschier) Seavey.

She married Vincent Klein in May of 1955 at St. Augustine Church. Mrs. Klein was a homemaker.

Carol loved spending time with her grandchildren. She wrote poems about each of them, as well as many other loved ones. Carol loved to travel, collecting many souvenirs along the way. She enjoyed attending services at St. Augustine Church, especially Midnight Christmas Mass. Carol was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed many good times there with her friends. Her unique sense of humor and loving personality will truly be missed.

Survivors include her children: Michelle (Pat) Sullivan, Huntington, Mass.; David (Barbara) Klein, Milaca, Minn.; Todd (Claudia) Klein, Schweinfurt, Germany; Renee (Brad) Morreim, Champlin, Minn.; Randy (Angela) Klein, Austin, Minn.; and Christine Klein (Marquette Turner) Austin, Minn. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Eric Betzler, Casey Klein, Jacob Morreim, Jordan Klein, Rebecca Morreim, Madison Klein; and two great-grandchildren: Karley Betzler and Kristin Betzler.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2003, at St. Augustine Church, Austin, Minn., at 10:30 a.m. with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 4 p.m. CCW Rosary and 6:30 p.m. wake service on Wednesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Chuck Badenschier, Norma VanEsch, Eric Betzler, Steve Wilson, Dan Waltz and Jean Ball.

Verna Clara (Johnson) Kruger

1914-2003

FARMED IN MOWER COUNTY

Verna Clara Kruger, 88, of Owatonna, Minn., died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

She was born September 20, 1914, in Blooming Prairie, Minn., the daughter of Ed and Clara (Hanson) Johnson. After her mother's death, she was raised by the John and Hannah Wold family of Blooming Prairie. Verna married Willard Kruger, April 3, 1937, at the Wold family home. They farmed in several locations in Freeborn and Mower counties until moving to Owatonna in 1952. Verna worked at the Fairlanes bowling center for 23 years and was known to make the best hamburgers in town; she retired in 1977. Verna was a charter member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She was a 2000 hour award recipient of the Owatonna Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed community events, threshing events, lutefisk dinners, pancake breakfasts, and old-time music. Verna was active for many years in a sewing circle with friends from Austin and Owatonna, and enjoyed doing embroidery and yo-yo quilts.

She is survived by two daughters, Jurene and Don Mortensen, and JulieAnn Kruger, Owatonna; daughter-in-law, Jackie Kruger, Rochester; six grandchildren, Stuart Mortensen, Charlene Wetzel, Jolene Mortensen, Dean (Shelly) Kruger, Dawn Kruger, and Kevin (Emmy) Kruger; eight great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Helen Jacobsen and Blanche Johnson, Owatonna, and Clara Kruger, Blooming Prairie; brothers-in-law, Russel and Dorothy Kruger and Zeph Marsh, Blooming Prairie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard; son, John P. Kruger; her parents; an infant child; a brother, Palmer Johnson; a sister, Sina Coggins; and a half-sister, Frieda Hafemann.

Visitation will be held at Michaelson Funeral Home on Sunday from 4-8 p.m. and on Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church from 10-11 a.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 21, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Owatonna. The Rev. David Droog will be officiating. Burial will be in the Red Oak Grove Cemetery Mower County.

Norma (Christenson) Meyers

1914-2003

Norma Meyers, 88, of Adams, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Adams Health Care Center.

She was born Dec. 3, 1914, in Adams, to Henry and Rachel (Gullickson) Christenson. She graduated from Adams High School in 1933 and worked in Rochester at the Kahler Drug Store until her marriage.

On Feb. 19, 1938, she married Raphael Meyers in Racine, Wis. They lived in several places due to Ray's employment . After retirement, the couple returned to Adams and became members of Little Cedar Lutheran Church. After Ray's death in 1997, Norma moved to the Cedar Court Apartments and later to the Health Care Center.

Survivors include her son, John Meyers, Bloomington; a grandson; sisters, Margie Osmundson, Adams; Lois Osmundson, Adams.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Charles; granddaughter, Kristine Meyers; and two sisters.

Visitation: One hour before the service.

Service: 2 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, at the funeral home with the Rev. Lydia Mittag officiating. Casket bearers will be David Osmundson, James Southwick, Jon Osmundson, Mark Osmundson, David Lagerstedt and Ryan Wolff.

Interment: Little Cedar Lutheran Cemetery, Adams.

Earl Jacob Miller

1911-2003

Earl Jacob Miller, 91, of Spring Valley, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center, Grand Meadow.

He was born Sept. 11, 1911, to John and Laura Miller. He graduated from Spring Valley High School.

On September 30, 1940, he married Harriet I. Howe at the Congregational Church. He worked for Reed-Murdock until 1960 and at the Spring Valley Light Plant until the mid 1980's.

He enjoyed fishing, playing with his grandchildren, carpentry and working on the church.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet, Grand Meadow; daughters, Marilyn (James) Olson, Grand Meadow; Linda (Bradley) Banitt, Zumbrota; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

He preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Loren and Dick; and sister, Amy.

Visitation: 12 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, at the church.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. Joe Haynes officiating.

Interment: Spring Valley Cemetery.

M. Doris (nee Redwing) Ness

1922-2003

M. Doris Ness, 81, of Austin, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.

She was born June 1, 1922, in Austin, to Martin and Rose (Hasson) Redwing. She graduated from Austin High School in 1940 and married LeRoy Ness on Aug. 23, 1945, at the St. Olaf parsonage.

She worked at Hormel for about three years, and worked as a waitress at the VFW for over 30 years. She was a life long member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary since 1946. She enjoyed listening to the Twins games on the radio, sewing, crocheting, traveling, fishing and playing cards.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Nancy Ness, Manhattan, Kan.; Ron Ness, Anoka; William and Laurie Ness, Verndale; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn (Redwing) Christopherson, Austin; two brothers, Chester and Delores Redwing, Portland, Ore.; Alvin and Jeri Redwing, Austin; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LeRoy; son, Robert; and two sisters, Bernice Vedder and Myrtle Carlson.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 7 at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church Tuesday. Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Rev. Roberta Flood officiating.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery in Austin.

LaRae Ruth Olson

1953-2003

LaRae Ruth Olson, 50, of Walker, died on Sunday, July 6, 2003, in a snorkeling accident.

LaRae is survived by her mother: Caroline Olson Lyngen (Robert) of Hackensack, Minn.; and three sisters: Ronda Westlund (Lee) of Marengo, Wis., Dawn Peterson (Tony) of Hackensack, Minn., and Amy Edens (Dan) of Bemidji, Minn. She is also survived by her boyfriend: Daniel Blesi of Walker; stepson: Lee Whiteneck of Battle Lake, Minn.; 13 nieces and nephews, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Olson, and her brother, Van Olson.

LaRae was born Feb. 21, 1953, in Austin, Minn., the daughter of Raymond and Caroline (Lee) Olson. LaRae grew up and attended school in Austin. After graduating from high school, she attended barber school. After graduating from barber school, she worked in the Twin Cities. In the late 1970s, she moved to the Walker area and was self-employed as a barber.

LaRae loved to hike, sail, bike and do many outdoor activities. She enjoyed traveling with her family and friends and was a gifted photographer. LaRae liked getting to know her customers as friends. She was a beautiful woman who died on a beautiful day doing something she loved while surrounded by the people she loved.

Visitation will be held at the Thomas-Dennis Funeral Home in Walker on Thursday, July 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial services will be held Friday, July 11, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Union Congregational Church in Hackensack with Rev. Michael Small officiating. Arrangements made by Thomas-Dennis Funeral Home of Walker.
