Margaret Leah (nee Tindal)
SCHRIEVER

1931-2003

Margaret Leah Schriever (nee Tindal), age 71, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Margaret was born on August 29, 1931, in Lyle, Minnesota, to Lee and Margaret (Grant) Tindal.

On Aug. 7, 1956, she was united in marriage to Harold B. Schriever at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin.

A lifelong Austin resident, Margaret liked dancing, camping, playing cards, collecting dolls and novelty clocks. She enjoyed time with friends and family. Margaret attended Columbus and St. Augustine School in Austin. She liked crocheting, crafts and collecting items representing her Irish heritage. She also had a large animated Christmas figurine collection. Margaret was a retired employee of Hormel Foods after 32 years of employment.

Survivors include her husband: Harold Schriever, Austin; son: Richard (Gwen) Schriever, New Richland; daughter: Darcy Schriever, Austin; two grandchildren: Dustin and Tawnya Schriever; sisters: Mary Jane Lenoch, Austin; Betty (Dave) Monty, Austin; Marcella (Otto) Mullenbach, Austin; Joanne (Allen) Kunze, Ogden, Utah; Joan (Jerry) Smith, Adams; brother: Jack (Gerri) Tindal, Waterville; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Lee and Margaret Tindal; infant son: Dustin Lee Schriever; brother: Tom Tindal; brother-in-law: Floyd Lenoch.

A funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2003, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson officiating. There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and 6:30 p.m. wake service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and also from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

The honorary casket bearers will be Peg Schwartz, Tawnya Schriever, Dawn Martinez, John Kunze and Dustin Schriever. The casket bearers will be Rick Smith, Ed Lenoch, Randy Lenoch, Mark Tindal, Dale Mullenbach and Rod Rud.

Lorraine H. (Clayton)
SEAVEY

1931-2003

Lorraine H. Seavey, 71, formerly of Austin, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Fieldcrest Care Center, Hayfield.

She was born March 20, 1931, in Lockhart, to Howard and Josephine (Geving) Clayton. She attended Austin Public Schools and married Donald E. Seavey on June 4, 1947, in Brownsdale.

Lorraine was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church and enjoyed doing crafts, crocheting, antiquing and music.

Survivors include children and spouses, Judith and James Lumley, New Hampton, Iowa; Marilyn and Burton Boe, West Concord; Donald Seavey, Winona; Jane and Charles Surat, St. Bonifacious; six granddaughters; three step-granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia (Thomas) Judd, Sheridan, Wyo.; brother, John (Barbara) Clayton, Sheridan, Wyo.; aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975; parents; and sister, Joan Hagen.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the funeral home and Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Stohlmann officiating. Casket bearers will be Judith and James Lumley, Marilyn and Burton Boe, Jane and Charles Surat, Donald Seavey, and John Clayton.

Darren Douglas Shaw

1977-2003

Darren Douglas Shaw, 25, of Austin, died in a one car accident Friday, March 7, 2003, in Austin.

He was born August 16, 1977, in Austin, Minn., to Dennis and Marsha (Miller) Shaw. Darren was a 1996 graduate of Austin High School and attended Riverland Community College. He was employed by the Austin Country Club. Darren enjoyed all outdoor activities including fishing, hunting, snow mobiling and motorcross racing. Mostly, Darren loved spending time with his family and friends and he loved to help others. As a result, Darren had several independent jobs including helping friends with construction and his self-employed lawn service.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2003, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ron Barnett officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be held at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and on Monday at the church one hour before the service. Organist will be Ruth Monson. Soloist will be Carrie Braaten.

Casket bearers will be Ben Miller, Justin Peterson, Scott Braaten, Dan Bergstrom, Ryan Smith, Tracey Smith, Pete Greenman and Isaac Neitzell.

Violet L. (nee Wencl)
Slowinski

1928-2003

Violet Lucille Slowinski, age 74, of Austin, died on Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Sacred Heart Nursing Home.

She was born June 4, 1928, in Brocket, North Dakota to Leo and Mary (Thompson) Wencl. She was united in marriage to Frank Slowinski on Sept. 17, 1949, at Saint Augustine Church in Austin, Minnesota.

Violet worked in the Dry Sausage Area at Hormel Foods Inc. in the early 1950's. Violet then stayed at home raising three children, being a devoted mother and loving wife.

She loved cooking, baking, gardening, bird watching, crocheting, knitting, sewing and bowling.

Two of her favorite pastimes allowed her to show off her artistic side. She baked and decorated wedding cakes for family and friends. She also dazzled Austin with her arts and crafts creativity, making refrigerator magnets, applique, holiday decorations, ceramics, as well as hundreds of other knick knacks.

She was part of a championship bowling team in the 1960's, continuing it as a lifelong hobby. She loved traveling and sightseeing, especially family vacations.

Violet reentered the workforce in the 1980's, working for Saint Olaf Hospital in the dietary/ kitchen area. She participated in her unit activities at Queen of Angels Church, where she was a longtime member.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years of marriage: Frank; two daughters: Deborah (John) Uecker of Austin and Lynn (Chris) Ford of Rochester; one son: Brian (Ines) Slowinski of Rochester; six grandchildren; three sisters: Lillian Ball of Austin, Evelyn Culbert of Austin and Mayme Smith of Seattle, Wash.; one brother: Lawrence Wencl of Blooming Prairie.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father: Mary and Leo; brothers: Richard, James, William, and Harold; sisters: Martha and Hazel.

Visitation: Was 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2003, with a 4 p.m. CCW Rosary and a 6:30 p.m. Wake Service and noon to 1 p.m. Friday, March 7 at Mayer Funeral Home.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Friday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin with Father William Becker and Father Paul Nelson officiating.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery.

Lloyd Start, Sr.

1908-2003

Lloyd C. Start, Sr., 94, of LeRoy, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at the Ostrander Nursing Home.

He was born July 19, 1908, in Bennington Township to Samuel and Minnie (Johnson) Start. He attended local schools through the eighth grade. He grew up on the family farm and eventually took over the family operation with his brothers.

On Jan. 9, 1941, he married Ruby Eastwold at the family farm in rural LeRoy. They had one son.

Lloyd lived at the Ostrander Nursing Home for a short time.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby, LeRoy; son, Lloyd Jr. (Christine Mulhern), LeRoy; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty Start, Osage, Iowa; niece and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2003 at the funeral home and Friday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 2 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in LeRoy with the Rev. Kay Stedham officiating.

Interment: LeRoy Lutheran Cemetery.

Shirley J. (nee Dugstad) Stilwell

1922-2003

Shirley J. Stilwell, 81, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

She was born Jan. 30, 1922, on the Dugstad Farm in Bloomfield Center, to Lewis and Lillian (Halling) Dugstad.

On Oct. 2, 1971, she married Donald R. Stilwell Sr. at The Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Shirley was a homemaker and a country school teacher.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Stilwell Sr., Austin; children, Don Jr. (Karen) Stilwell, Austin; Barbara (Gary) Heimer, Woodbury; David (Cheryl) Stilwell, Bloomington; Mary Lou Johnson, Stewartville; Patty (Jim) Urlick, Austin; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brothers, Earl (Leota) Dugstad, Lake City; Lloyd (Jeanne) Dugstad, Albert Lea; sisters, Goldie (George) Shaw, Ventura, Calif.; Carol Jean Cadwell, Bemidji.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sherry; sister, Doris.

THOMPSON

1923-2003

Anne K. (Tollerud) Thompson, 79, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, February 28, 2003, at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 8, 1923, in rural Austin, to Albert H. Tollerud and Laura C. Bergh.

She married Donald E. Thompson on Nov. 28, 1953, at Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Survivors include daughter, Laura A. Hunn (fiance, Robert L. Belshan), Austin; daughter, Kim Thompson, Austin; son, Kenneth D. Thompson, Austin; six grandchildren, Seth and Haley Thompson; Kelly, Mike and Heidi Hunn; Jared Krull; one great-grandchild, Landon-Dre Hunn; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters.

She was a life-long resident of Austin. She was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Grace Lutheran Church. Greg Mannel will be the minister. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Worlein Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church. Family prefers that donors choose where to send memorials.

Angela K. (nee Titus) Underdahl

1970-2003

Angela Kay Underdahl, 32, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.

She was born on November 16, 1970, in Austin. She worked several places in Austin, the most recent being Burger King. She enjoyed playing in dart leagues and also playing bingo with her friends. Angie had a special friend in her life, Brian Miller.

Survivors include her parents, Dan and Diane Titus, Austin; son, Codie Miller, Austin; step-brother, David Titus, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Visitation: One hour before the service.

Service: 10:30 a.m. today, March 11, 2003, at the funeral home with Father Paul Nelson officiating. The casket bearers will be David Titus, Tom Anderson, Troy Anderson, Todd Anderson, John Lynch and Jim Lynch.

Leon Vlasaty

1920-2003

Leon "Lee" Vlasaty, 82, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Austin Medical Center of natural causes. His body was donated to the Mayo Foundation for research studies.

He was born May 20, 1920, in Austin. In 1940, he married Dorothy Esther Norton in Northwood, Iowa. Lee served in the U.S. Army from May 1945 until 1947. In 1947, the couple moved to Austin. Lee was a laborer at Hormel for 40 years. He was a member of Church of Christ in Austin and enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball and woodworking.

Survivors include wife, Dorothy Vlasaty; children, Charles (Jean) Vlasaty, Austin; Beverlee (Daryl) Moenke, Cottage Grove; Franklyn Vlasaty, Post Falls, Idaho; Jerry (Sharon) Vlasaty, Austin; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Scott and Marcella Roman, both of Garden Grove, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Service: 2 p.m. memorial service Sunday at Church of Christ in Austin with Pastor Dave DeFor officiating.

Tod David Wilke

1967-2003

Tod David Wilke, 36, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, died Monday, March 17, 2003, peacefully in his sleep at home.

Tod was born on March 5, 1967, in Austin, Minnesota, to Donald and Marcia (Skinner) Wilke. He was baptized by Pastor L.W. Schierenbeck at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Austin, and was confirmed by Pastor Paul Fleischer at Our Savior's Church in Jamestown, N.D. Tod was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Eau Claire.

Tod attended schools in Austin, Bismarck, N.D., Immanuel Lutheran High School/College in Eau Claire and graduated from Jamestown, N.D. High School.

Tod worked at Best Buy until a motorcycle accident, which caused serious brain trauma with many weeks of rehabilitation. His first choice of an outing following his hospitalization was to go to church to hear the words of the Good Shepherd.

Survivors include Tod's father, Donald of Louisville, Ky.; brother and sister-in-law, Pastor Michael and Gloria Wilke of Saginaw, Mich.; brother, Robert Wilke of Eau Claire, Wis.; brother and sister-in-law, Aaron and Tanja Wilke of Rapid City, S.D.; nephews, Luke, Nathanial, Aaron and Jesse Wilke of Saginaw, Mich. and Wesley Fleischer of Eau Claire, Wis.; niece, Janaye Wilke of Rapid City, S.D.; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his mother, maternal and paternal grandparents.

Tod touched his loved ones' lives in many ways as a son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. He will be missed.

Memorial services were held on Monday, March 24, 2003, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Eau Claire at 1 p.m. Pastor Mark Gullerud officiated.

Elmer B. Young

1906-2003

Elmer B. Young, 97, of Mapleview, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

He was born Jan. 8, 1906, in New Hampton, Iowa, to George and Bertha (Beckman) Young. Elmer worked as a machinist.

Survivors include son, Lawrence Young, Austin; daughter, Rose Marie Halverson, Austin; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Myrtle Young; second wife, Leona Young; and daughter-in-law, Barbara Young.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at the funeral home and Thursday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Crane Community Chapel with Pastor Randy Petersen officiating. Casket bearers will be Edsel Sprung, Duane Distad, Melvin King, Ken Nash, Blaine Braaten and Forrest Miller.

Nelvina G. Zicafoose

1920-2003

Mrs. Nelvina Zicafoose, age 82, of Austin, Minnesota, and formerly of Alton, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, March 25, at 1 p.m., at the First Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa. The Rev. Chris Holck will officiate. Interment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 6:30 p.m. Monday, with family present from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Nelvina Geraldine was born July 11, 1920, near Alton, Iowa, the daughter of Gerrit and Reka (Top) Van Es. She graduated from the Newkirk, Iowa High School, attended Northwestern College in Orange City and Minnesota State University in Moorhead, and received her masters degree in library science from the University of Minnesota.

In August of 1943, she married Lawrence Earl Zicafoose in Nebraska. They made their home in Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota, where Nelvina was an elementary school teacher. In 1976, she retired as the Brooklyn Center, Minn. High School librarian.

In retirement, Nelvina and Lawrence spent their summers at their lake home in Starbuck, Minn., where Nelvina liked to entertain family and friends. They spent their winters in their mobile home in Homestead, Fla. Lawrence passed away April 25, 1993, in Austin.

Nelvina enjoyed fishing, crocheting, and reading her Bible, daily devotionals, and Christian periodicals. In later years, she often played table games with family members, including some of her great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her three stepsons and their wives, Earl and Alice (Hansen) Zicafoose of Austin; Darrell and Shirley (Krueger) Zicafoose of Spencerport, N.Y.; and Harvey and Thelma (Dahl) Zicafoose of Austin; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Jack and Pat (Johnson) Van Es, and a sister and her husband, Winifred (Van Es) and Ivan Muilenburg, all of Orange City; and nephews and nieces.

Mary Annetta (nee McMurray)
FINCH

1918-2009

Mary Annetta (McMurray) Finch,91, of Austin died Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 18, 2009 at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Iowa where she had been a resident since late August.

She was born Sept. 29, 1918 to William S. and Gertrude M. (Long) McMurray in Lincoln, Neb. where she grew up. After graduating from Lincoln High School, Mary attended the University of Nebraska where she met and married Harold Finch. Upon his graduation in 1938, they moved with their small daughter to Austin where Harold was employed by Geo. A. Hormel & Company. A lifelong homemaker, Mary was an active volunteer in the community.

Survivors include her husband of 74 years, Harold; two daughters, Georgia (Norman) Hanevik of St. Paul, Anne (Charles) Helgeland of Franklin, Tenn.; one son, John Finch of Sante Fe, N.M.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one great-great-great-grandchild; many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 13 siblings and one infant son.

A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 at First Congregational UCC with Pastor George Toschak officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment of ashes will be at a later date in Lincoln, Neb.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Salvation Army.

Leona T. Larson

1916-2009

Leona T. Larson, 93, of Austin died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009 at Sacred Heart Care Center.

Leona was born March 15, 1916 in Festina, Iowa to Herman and Amelia (Eimers) Bullerman. She married Myrle J. Larson and they were married for 65 years. He preceded her in death on February 23, 2006.

Leona was a homemaker who loved her son and daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always available to help when needed and enjoyed attending their outside activities. Leona and Myrle loved to travel and enjoyed fishing in Northern Minnesota, especially around Park Rapids, with the family. Family was very important to both of them. Leona also loved to cook, garden and crochet. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Karen Larson, Austin; two grandchildren, Mark and Wanda Larson, Mantorville, Lynn and Brian Roberts, Robbinsdale; five great-grandchildren, Sara Roberts, Bayle Roberts, Lindsay Larson, Nick Larson, and Katie Larson; a sister, Maggie Numedahl, Decorah, Iowa; nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, Amelia and Herman; sisters, Irene, Frances, and Bernadine; brothers, Edwin and Adolph.

Jennie A. (nee Varco) Hart

1860-1955

1860 JENNIE HART 1955

Jennie A. Hart, daughter of Thomas and Emelme Eddy Varco, was born on the Varco homestead, south of Austin, May 29, 1860, four years after the arrival of the Varcos from Canada.

She was one of and the last survival of a family of eight children In this neighborhood, she attended the district school and grew to young womanhood.

Her marriage to S. Burton Hart took place on March 12, 1882, and the young couple began their life together on an 80-acre farm, west of Rose Creek. Eight children blessed this union, five of whom grew to maturity.

B. T. Hart, deceased April 22, 1944, in Portland, Ore.; Paul B. Hart, accidental death, Sept. 10, 1911; three daughter, Emeline, widow of George P. Anderson of Austin; Gladys, wife of Arthur DeRemer, Norwalk, Calif.; Ada, wife of Leslie E. Pike, Long Beach, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren are left to mourn her passing.

Mrs. Hart accepted the Lord as her Saviour and was baptized as a member of the First Baptist Church. April 8, 1922. Because of her cheerful disposition, her love for people and a desire to be of help in times of adversity and sickness, she had a wide circle of acquaintances and friends.

Due to her husband's health, they sold their farm and bought a small acreage on South River Street road, where they lived until Mr. Hart's death in November, 1915. After that, Mrs. Hart did practical nursing for a time. Later, she spent several years in Long Beach, Calif. Since December, 1945, she made her home with her daughter. Mrs. Emeline Anderson, in Austin at 805 Lansing.

Funeral services for Carl Strom, LeRoy, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the LeRoy Lutheran Church, the Rev. Burnell Lund, officiating. Interment will be in the LeRoy Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Martz Funeral Home.

Mr. Strom is survived by his wife, Minda; two daughters, Mrs Jean Conn, Clovis, N. M., Mrs. Carol Pesch, Iowa City, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Peterson, Hanska, and Mrs. Louis Severson, New Richland; a brother, Henry of Madelia.

Joseph Edward Hahn

1920-2003

Joseph Edward Hahn, 82, of Sargeant, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at Field Crest Care Center, Hayfield.

He was born Sept. 17, 1920, to Jacob and Sophie (Roth) Hahn in Roselle, Iowa.

On June 4, 1945, he married Josephine Greving in Willey, Iowa. The couple farmed in Roselle, until 1957, when they moved to Hayfield and farmed until their retirement. Joseph also worked at Waters Conley in Rochester, Larson Products in Sargeant, and at the Hayfield Community Schools.

He enjoyed cards, fishing, and spending time with family.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Living Rosary and the Hayfield Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine Hahn, Sargeant; sons, Glenn (Carolyn) Hahn, Sargeant; James (LuAnn) Hahn, Fairmont; Eric (Christina) Hahn, Hayfield; Roger (Linda) Hahn, Vadnais Heights; daughters, Sharon (Vincent) Flynn, Rochester; Sandra (Allen) Iverson, Kasson; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Klocke, Hayfield; Bernice (Ray) Sporrer, Dedham, Iowa; brothers, Raymond Hahn, Carroll, Iowa; Louis (Linda) Hahn, Churdan, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Norbert and Lawrence.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2003, with a 4:30 p.m. prayer service and a 7:30 p.m. Rosary and on Thursday from 8 to 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Richard Dernek officiating.

Interment: Fairview Cemetery, Hayfield.

David R. Smith

1934-2003

David Roger Smith, 69, of Adams, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at Adams Health Care Center.

He was born April 2, 1934, in Bath Township, to Andrew and Mary (Johnson) Smith. He served in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1955.

In December of 1981, he married Kathy Mattinen in Carlton.

David worked at Ulland Brothers Construction for several years, and was a member of the VFW in Carlton, and the Adams American Legion Post #146.

He enjoyed fishing and ball games.

Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Terry Smith, Adams; Larry Smith, Adams; Danny and Colleen Smith, Sherrard, Ill.; daughter, Lori Smith, East Moline, Ill.; seven grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Katherine and Loren Cornelius, Blooming Prairie; Lillian Knudson, Ellendale.

He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Rick Smith; sisters, Nettie Smith, Olive Neitzell, Margaret Langlie, Bonnie Nelson; brothers, Charlie Smith, Danielle Smith, Donavan Smith, and Lindsey Smith.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at the funeral home and Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Florence Lucille (Butrick) Beck

1921-2003

Florence Lucille Beck, 81, of Grand Meadow, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center, Grand Meadow.

She was born May 3, 1921, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Ira and Eva (Pindell) Butrick.

On Sept. 2, 1939, she married Earl Beck at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Survivors include daughters, Carol (Milford) Goeman, Jeffers; Larraine (Merle) Goeman, Lake City; Beverly (Daniel) Thome, Stacyville, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Dearl (Edith) Butrick, Fort Dodge, Iowa; Ivan Butrick, Ottumwa, Iowa; John Butrick, Longmont, Colo.; sister, Betty Hudson, Ottumwa, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters.

Quentin A. Rickerl

1927-2003

Quentin A. Rickerl, age 75, of Austin, died Friday, April 25, 2003, of pancreatic disease, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

Quentin was born July 16, 1927, in Story County, Iowa, to Frank and Julie (Baldus) Rickerl.

On Nov. 19, 1948, he was united in marriage to Joan Quinn at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boone, Iowa.

He farmed in the Taopi area and retired from Washington Scientific Industries in Owatonna where he had worked.

Quentin loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them, especially his grandchildren. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Quentin enjoyed traveling and recently visited Germany and Florida.

Survivors include his wife: Joan Rickerl, Austin; six children: Ted (Sandy) Rickerl, Owatonna; Teresa (Nick) Landherr, Owatonna; Jerome (Liz Couglin) Rickerl, Austin; Jeff (Marti-Lynn) Rickerl, Austin; Jackie (Ben) Veri, Rineyville, Ky.; Monica (Steve) Grimley, Glenville; 11 grandchildren: Heather Rickerl, Holly Rickerl, Peter (Rachel) Landherr, Kathleen Landherr, Tony Rickerl, Michael Crews, Christopher Rickerl, Amanda Rickerl, Michael Veri, Joshua Touchton and Jessa Touchton; one great-grandson: Fritz Landherr; five sisters and brothers: Veronica Gallagher, Bozeman, Mont.; Christine Sampson, Story City, Iowa; George (Ann) Rickerl, Gilbert, Iowa; Bernadette Hathaway, Grand Meadow; Herman (Violette) Rickerl, Cresco, Iowa.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at St. Edward's Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 7:30 p.m. wake service on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The honorary casket bearers and the casket bearers will be grandchildren.

Howard Bud Herr

1920-2003

Howard Bud Herr, 82, of rural Brownsdale, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea, Minn.

Howard was born July 8, 1920, in Albert Lea, Minn., to Fred Elmer (Bud) and Anna (Lee) Herr. He attended Brownsdale School through eighth grade, receiving his diploma June 27, 1935. He enjoyed showing livestock in 4-H as a youth.

He married Ardis Leetha Larson on June 8, 1945, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, Minn. They made their home on a farm north of Brownsdale until Howard entered the rest home on Jan. 12, 2001.

Howard enjoyed farm life, raising crops and livestock, and had a special regard for his herd of jersey cattle. In his later years, Howard enjoyed showing his hogs in the Open Class at the State Fair.

Howard was baptized Oct. 13, 1957, by Rev. William L. Foster at the Brownsdale Methodist Church, which he supported. He served on the elevator board, the school board, and the Waltham Township Board.

Survivors include his wife, Ardis, Austin; two sons, James (Renee) Herr, Emmons; Fred Herr, Waltham; five daughters, Patricia (James) Bronner, Winona; Linda (Stanley) Whitney, Mapleton; Randee (Ronald) White, Waseca; Carol (Michael) Hodnefield, Austin; Cheryl (Steven) Funk, McCook, S.D.; 17 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one on the way; seven step-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Evelyn Herr, Brownsdale; Myrtle Larson, Adams; Curtis and Daisy Larson, Austin; Shirley Tucker, Austin; Loris and Dorothy Larson, Austin; Verla and Douglas Thompson, Lansing; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Herbert; and brothers-in-law, Otto Larson, Nomer Larson, Ober Larson, and Leonard Tucker.

Friends and family may call at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home in Brownsdale, Tuesday, April 29, 2003, from 5 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Wednesday. The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. April 30, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Brownsdale, Minn. with Rev. James Hodak officiating. Interment will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.

Steven Lynn Stern

1952-2003

Steven Lynn Stern, age 50, of Austin, died Wednesday morning, April 23, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

He was born Aug. 10 1952, in Austin, the son of Roland and Dorothy (Sukow) Stern.

He attended school in Austin, graduating from Austin High School in 1970. After graduation, he attended community college before entering the United States Navy on Feb. 27, 1972. He served aboard the USS Sylvania in the Great Lakes and out of Norfolk, Va. He was discharged Feb. 15, 1978, and returned to Minnesota where he worked at the Blooming Prairie Golf Course, Northstar Supper Club and for Don Watts as a cook. In 1980, he moved to Willmar, Minn. where he worked at the Country Kitchen. While working in Willmar, Steven met his wife, Patricia Nelson and they were married on March 27, 1982, in Willmar. They made their home in Willmar until 1984, when they moved to Austin. While living in Austin, Steven worked at Hormel Foods until 1996. From 1996 to 2002, he worked at the Austin Herald in the mailroom. From 2002 until his death he was employed at the Holiday Inn as a cook.

He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Stern of Austin; three children, James H. Johnson of Athens, Ohio, Shawn P. Johnson of Austin and Stephany (Keith) Oldenkamp of Austin; two grandchildren, Anthony Rosett of Owatonna and Nicholas Johnson of Austin; his mother, Dorothy Stern of Austin; two brothers, Wayne H. Stern and Dennis L. Stern, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

His father Roland Stern and his grandparents preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 26, 2003, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with Rev. Glenn Monson officiating. Burial with military honors by VFW Post #1216 and American Legion Post #91 will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. The Worlein Funeral Home is handling arrangements for the family.

Sister Terence Gilbert

1917-2003

Sister Terence Gilbert, 85, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, who served as an educator, died April 22, 2003, at Assisi Heights.

Born Geraldine Gilbert on July 21, 1917, in Chicago, Sister Terence entered the Franciscan Congregation in 1934 from Saint Priscilla Parish, Chicago. She made profession of vows in 1937 and began her teaching career at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Easton. Sister taught in various schools in Minnesota including Currie, Waseca, Winona and Sleepy Eye. She taught at Lourdes High School, Rochester from 1956 to 1958; and in Austin from 1968 to 1986, where she served as assistant principal and counselor at Pacelli High School. She also taught in Ironton and Portsmouth, Ohio and Chicago. She retired to Assisi Heights in 1992 and celebrated her diamond jubilee in 1997.

Sister Terence is survived by her Franciscan community.

Visitation: At the 4:30 p.m. wake service today, April 24, 2003, and until the time of service on Friday.

Service: 11 a.m. Friday in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights, Rochester.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery.

Marguerite L. (nee Weiler)
BERGSTROM

1904-2003

Marguerite L. Bergstrom, 99, of Adams, formerly of rural Austin, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Adams Health Care Center.

She was born Jan. 16, 1904, in Arlington, Iowa, to Lloyd and Bertha (Boyer) Weiler. She graduated from Charles City High School.

On July 16, 1923, she married Rudolph Bergstrom at Fort Atkinson, Iowa. They lived in Charles City for three years until moving to the Rose Creek and Austin area. In 1940, they moved to a farm on Highway 56 south of Brownsdale. Marguerite moved to the Adams Health Care Center in January of this year.

Marguerite was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and was active in the ladies organization of the church. She enjoyed flower gardening and playing cards and games.

Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, LaVerne Bergstrom, Dexter; Donald and Shirley Bergstrom, Austin; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; special friend, Nancy Roberts.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Shirley; and sister, Vivian.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2003, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Michael Omlsted and Robert A. Morgan officiating.

Pearl L. (nee Wolthoff) Lamon

1913-2003

Pearl L. Lamon, 90, of LeRoy, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at the Adams Health Care Center, Adams.

She was born Jan. 20, 1913, in Howard County, Iowa, to Peter and Delia (Niehaus) Wolthoff. She graduated from Grundy Center High School and then attended Normal School.

On Sept. 3, 1939, she married Merle Lamon in Grundy Center. They had two children. Pearl taught in LeRoy schools, Howard County Schools, and also did some home schooling.

She was a member of the Garden Club and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church when she was able. She enjoyed crafts, knitting, crocheting, and flowers.

Survivors include son, Terry (Jan) Lamon, Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Sharon (Dan) Regan, Wayzata, Minn.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Robert Wolthoff, Grundy Center, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters and three brothers.

Visitation: One hour before the service Saturday at the church.

Darlene Mae (Voss) Stephoni

1937-2003

Darlene Mae Stephoni, 65, of Waseca, formerly of Austin, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at the Waseca Medical Center.

She was born June 3, 1937, in Austin, to Stanley Clifford and Ethel Alice (Twedell) Voss.

On Sept. 15, 1956, she married Arthur Stephoni.

Darlene lived for many years on a farm in Oakland, Bismarck, N.D. and most recently at the Lakeshore Inn Nursing Home in Waseca.

She was an avid quilter and gardener. Her favorite pastimes included visiting friends and playing bingo.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur Stephoni, Waseca; sons, Mike (Lynn) Stephoni, Alden; Dan Stephoni, Austin; daughter, Patti (Mike) Schroeder, Bismarck, N.D.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Larry (Lorretta) Voss, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant children and a sister.

Douglas Kenneth Schnebly

1952-2003

Douglas Kenneth Schnebly, 51, of Faribault, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at his home.

He was born Jan. 29, 1952, in Albert Lea, to Bill and Ruth (Madson) Schnebly. He attended Albert Lea High School and Faribault Technical College.

On June 17, 1972, he married Mary Ellen Billadeau at the Little Brown Church.

Douglas was a machinist and worked at McQuay's in Faribault for 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Schnebly, Faribault; daughter, Amie (Kevin) Wunderlich, Andover; son, Jason Schnebly, Andover; two grandchildren; siblings, Diane (Al) Oppegard, Las Vegas, Nev.; Steve (Toni) Schnebly, Long Lake; Ruth Ann Weiler, Maple Grove; Bill (Cheryl) Schnebly, Champlin; Robert Schnebly, Washington State.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Eldon A. O'Brien

1942-2003

Eldon A. O'Brien, age 60, of Austin, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at his home.

Eldon was born April 23, 1942, in Lake City, Minn., to Lyle and Rosalie (Bechel) O'Brien. He was raised on a farm where he learned his strong morals and good work ethic. Eldon graduated from St. John's University in 1964. He began employment with General Adjustment Bureau in Duluth and Minneapolis.

Later he sold securities for State Bond and Mortgage Company in St. Cloud. On September 23, 1967, he was united in marriage to Elaine Guthrie at the Church of St. Augustine in St. Cloud.

In 1970 they moved to Austin where Eldon began working for Jim Weber Adjusting Company and in June 1971 he began his 31 year career with the Hormel Employees Credit Union as a loan officer.

Eldon's family and faith in God came first in his life. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren and children.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed God's works of nature.

His family reaped the benefits of his labors in the garden.

Eldon enjoyed people and will be remembered by all for his sense of humor, quick wit and straight forward candor.

Dorothea M. Cress, 90, formerly of Austin, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at Ebenezer Hall in Minneapolis where she resided.

She was born August 9, 1912, in Adrian to G. Roman and Adelheide (Tennessen) Hartman. On April 29, 1943, she married Nicholas A. Cress. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph (Elaine Peaslee) Cress, Bettendorf, Iowa; Robert (Margina) Cress, Minneapolis; daughter, Mary (Burton) Berlowe, Minneapolis; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas Cress; granddaughter, Jennifer Cress; three brothers, Herbert Hartman, Alphonse Hartman and Basil Hartman.

Visitation: Tuesday, April 22, 2003, one hour before the service at the church.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father William Becker officiating.

Interment: St. Peter's Cemetery in Rose Creek.

Funeral Home: Mayer Funeral Home, Austin.

Memorials: St. Stephen's Human Services, Minneapolis, or Red Cloud Indian School, Pine Ridge, S.D.

Esther M. (nee Vogt) Meyer

1909-2003

Esther M. Meyer, formerly of Austin, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at the Adams Healthcare Center.

She was born October 8, 1909, in Valmeyer, Illinois, to Joseph and Louisa (Dyross) Vogt. She attended Sacred Heart School in Waseca before the family moved to Shieldsville. While in Shieldsville, Esther went on to become a professional dietician in St. Paul where she continued in food service until she returned in 1975. She married Sylvester Meyer. After retirement, she moved to Austin.

Survivors include two sisters: Florence Stephani, Austin, and Sister Joseen Vogt, Rochester; two brothers: Leonard (Evelyn) Vogt, Rose Creek, and Clement (Catherine) Vogt, Fairchild, Wis.; brother-in-law, Leo Rauen, Austin; many nieces and nephews; grand nieces and nephews; great grand nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and two brothers.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home with a wake service at 7 p.m. and one hour before the service Monday at the church.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Rose Creek with Father Ruben Spinler officiating.

Interment: St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery in Faribault.

Vernon P. Gavin

1932-2003

Vernon P. Gavin, 71, of Austin, died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born January 4, 1932, in Austin to Emmet and Mae (Pace) Gavin. He attended Columbus Grade School, graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1950 and went on to work for the George A. Hormel Company for 33 years. He served in the United States Army for two years as a sergeant. On June 2, 1953, he married Alberta Gavin at Queen of Angels Catholic Church. He was on the school board at Pacelli High School, on the parish council at Queen of Angels Church and a volunteer at the Hormel Nature Center, being volunteer of the year in 1996. He was on the Senior Citizen Board of Directors for three years, Meals on Wheels volunteer for 12 years and on the Board of Directors for six years. He also volunteered as singer/soloist for a local nursing home, called Bingo and worked at the White Whale in Austin.

Survivors include his wife, Alberta Gavin, Austin; two sons: Larry (Patty) Gavin, Faribault, and Patrick (Julie) Gavin, Claremont; daughter, Lisa (Virgil) Cruse, Bakersfield, Calif.; two grandchildren; two sisters: Dorothy Murphy, San Diego, Calif., and Beatrice Ronan, Scottsdale, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Bernard Gavin and Father Larry Gavin; two sisters: Mary Jean Gavin and Margaret Davis.

Visitation: Tuesday, April 29, 2003, the family will greet friends at the luncheon following the service at the church.

Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father William Becker officiating.

David Hubbard Peck

1954-2003

David Hubbard Peck, 48, of Grand Meadow, died April 15, 2003, at his home.

He was born Oct. 4, 1954, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Roger and Nancy (Hubbard) Peck.

He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1972 and attended Concordia College in Moorhead for two years. He graduated from Mankato State University with a bachelors degree in accounting. He later earned his CPA. For most of his career, he worked at Northwest Business Travel and was also a volunteer tax preparer for inmates and the elderly.

He married Cherie Rollings in January of 1981 in Garden City. They later divorced.

Dave was an avid reader, a science fiction fan, loved jazz music and camping.

Survivors include his son, Isaac, Coon Rapids; daughters, Kierstan and Madeline, Coon Rapids; parents, Roger and Nancy, Grand Meadow; sister, Tracy (Mark) Jacobson, Grand Meadow; brothers, Thomas (Julie) Peck, Grand Meadow; Kelly Peck, Montevideo.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2003, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 1 p.m. memorial service Saturday at The United Church of Grand Meadow with the Rev. Greg Strunk officiating.

Interment: Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Funeral Home: Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home, Grand Meadow.

Memorials: Will be used for cancer research.

Mary Kay Smith

1948-2003

Mary Kay Smith, 54, of Shoreview, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at Victoria Place.

She was born July 16, 1948, in Austin, to Robert and Lillian (Mortensen) Smith.

Mary Kay loved to work and worked at many different places, including Community Involvement Program, RISE, and, most recently, Midwest Special Services in the metro area.

Survivors include sisters and brothers-in-law, Sharon and Keith Cooper, Elroy, Wis.; Diane and James Cecil, Austin; Linda and Bob Jasinski, Garland, Texas; Pamela Billings, Austin; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation: One hour before the service Friday at the mortuary.

Service: 11 a.m. Friday, April 18, 2003, at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Don Deines officiating.

Interment: Nashville Cemetery, Truman.

Funeral Home: Clasen-Jordan Mortuary, Austin.

Memorials: To the American Cancer Society.
