Paul E. Brown

1940-2003

Paul E. Brown, 62, of Austin, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center.

He was born Dec. 10, 1940, to Walter P. and Margaret E. (Noble) Brown in Austin.

A lifelong Austin resident, Paul married Judith Johnson on March 14, 1963, in Omaha, Neb. He was employed by Farmstead Foods in Albert Lea for 27 and a half years. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include wife, Judith Brown, Austin; son, Kent Brown, Austin; brother, Jack (Shirley) Brown, Omaha, Neb.; mother-in-law, Geneva Johnson, Austin; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ruby.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 9, 2003, at the funeral home and Monday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Rev. Kristin K. Wee officiating.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery.

Vernon L. Gosha

1925-2003

Vernon L. Gosha, 77, of Austin, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born April 5, 1925, in Taopi, to Joseph and Winnifred (Stern) Gosha.

He graduated from Austin High School in 1943 and served in the Army from June 30, 1943 to April 23, 1946. On Dec. 28, 1946, he married Jean E. Ross at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Austin.

Vernon attended Austin Junior College and was employed as a foreman for 29 years with the Hormel Foods Corporation, until his retirement in 1986.

He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, where he was a longtime choir member. He was also a member of the American Legion, the VFW and had served on the YMCA board of directors. He enjoyed woodworking and home improvement projects along with reading, puzzles and computers.

Survivors include wife, Jean Gosha, Austin; sons and daughter-in-law, Michael and Susan Gosha, Austin; Craig Gosha, Minneapolis; Douglas Gosha, Rochester; Thomas Gosha, Austin; daughter, Mary Gosha, Rochester; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Delores Gosha, Rochester; niece and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Eugene Gosha.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 3, 2003, at the funeral home and Tuesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ronald Barnett officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Harold C. Hoyum

1917-2003

Harold C. Hoyum, 85, of Austin, formerly of rural Viroqua, Wis., died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the Comfort Care Good Samaritan Center, Austin.

He was born in Sterling Township, Vernon County, Wis., on Oct. 24, 1917, to Thrond and Maria (Forde) Hoyum.

He married Jean Vance on Sept. 25, 1940. They farmed on Dach Ridge near Viroqua, Wis. for many years. Jean preceded him in death on May 8, 1992.

In October 1996, Harold married Margaret Campbell. They made their home in Austin. He was a loving husband who loved to travel and dance.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Austin; daughter, Joyce (Alan) Solverson of Viroqua, Wis.; sons, Terry (Lori) Hoyum of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Robert (Barbara) Hoyum and Gary (Sharon) Hoyum, both of Viroqua, Wis.; step-daughters, Gail (Steve) Herschman of Gibbon, Cheryl (Allen) Robinson of Pine City, and Diane Tomkins of South St. Paul; grandchildren, Denise (Douglas) Bolstad of Viroqua, Wis., Chris (Charmin) Solverson of Stoughton, Wis., Sherri (Steven) Johnson of Chandler, Ariz., Craig Solverson of Viroqua, Wis., Jennifer Hoyum and fiance Jammie Miller of Viroqua, Wis., Lisa (Dave) Kowalczyk of Milwaukee and Chad (Kari) Hoyum of Viroqua, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Kristen and Trevor Bolstad, Rourie and Neo Solverson; step-grandchildren, Cassie and Zachary Herschman of Gibbon, Chris (Rhea) Haffner of St. Paul Park, Tom Haffner of Shoreview, and Kevin Tomkins of South St. Paul; step-great-grandchildren, Alex and Emily Haffner; brothers, Fredrick (Carol) Hoyum of Westby, Wis., Norman (Lillian) Hoyum ofCedar Rapids, Iowa and Edwin (Iva) Hoyum of Rockford, Ill.; sisters, Mabel Oliver of Stoddard, Wis. and Helen Emerson of Sun City, Ariz.; brothers-in-law, Carl Oliver and Noel Nelson both of Viroqua, Wis.; sisters-in-law, Janette Vance of West Salem, Wis., and Leola Vance of Modesto, Calif.

In addition to his first wife, Harold was preceded in death by daughter, Cheryl Hoyum; granddaughter, Deanne Solverson; sisters, Gertrude Oliver and Evelyn Nelson; brothers-in-law, Virgil Vance, Kenneth Vance, Vernon Vance and Arnold Emerson; sister-in-law, Mearl Vance; and step son-in-law, William Tomkins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at the Viroqua Church of Christ. Pastor Ron Ahlgren will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call at the Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday after 1 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Viroqua Church of Christ, Austin Medical Center Hospice or the Gundersen Lutheran Cancer Center in LaCrosse.

William D. Nargan

1930-2003

William D. Nargan, 64, of Rochester, died Jan. 31, 2003, at his home.

He was born April 3, 1938, in Austin.

On Nov. 23, 1957, he married Alice "Dutch" Berg in Binghamton, N.Y. They moved to Rochester in 1958.

William was a procurement engineer for IBM. He was a member of NRA and enjoyed woodcarving, motorcycles, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include children, Cher (Bob) Myer, Cedar; Wendy (Mark) Peterson, Rochester; John (Andrea) Nargan, Mission Viejo, Calif.; Jan (Cory) Dahlstrom, Champlin; Scott Nargan, Burnsville; eight grandchildren; mother, Marie Nargan, Austin; sister, Trudy (Bernie) O'Neill, Austin, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 9, 2002, and one daughter.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the funeral home.

Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at the funeral home with Revs. Mark and Kym Johnson officiating.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery.

Joyce Lois (nee Sayles) Schwartz

1929-2003

Joyce Lois Schwartz, age 73, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, of Austin passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Methodist Hospital.

She was born Feb. 15, 1929, in Austin, Minn. to Carleton and Helen (Bolduan) Sayles. A graduate of Austin High School, she was married to Lawrence on June 19, 1948, at Queen of Angels Church in Austin. She devoted her life to being a loving, caring mother and wife. She will be forever missed by all.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at 11 a.m. at St. Edwards Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Fogal officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be held at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and on Wednesday at St. Edwards Catholic Church one hour before the service. Organist will be Leona Miller. Soloist will be Sue Viehauser. Casket Bearers will be Jeff Daily, Brian Daily, Jennifer Tilford, Bill Tilford, Mark Schwartz, Kristine Schwartz, and Kerri Schwartz.

WILSON

1915-2003

BURIAL AT EVANGER CEMETERY

Erma Marie Wilson, 87, died Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at Field Crest Care Center, Hayfield.

She was born April 1, 1915, to Oscar and Louise (Martin) Johnson in rural Hayfield. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield and confirmed at Evanger Lutheran Church in rural Sargeant.

On Aug. 24, 1934, she married Walter M. Wilson at Evanger Lutheran Church, where she was a member. They had seven children. Erma was a lifelong resident of the Hayfield and Dexter areas.

Survivors include daughters, Barbara (Theo) Von Vooren, Schoten, Belgium; Bonnie (Larry) Spone, Willowbrook, Ill.; sons, Bob (Betty) Wilson, Dexter; Dallas (Verna Mae) Wilson, Longmont, Colo.; David (Suzanne) Wilson, Hudson, Wis.; sister, Ellen (Spencer) Wilson, Hayfield; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Curtis and Charles Wilson; brothers, Lester, Harley, and Stacy Johnson.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Michael C. Bauer

1948-2003

Michael Clarence Bauer, 54, of Austin, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born March 29, 1948, in Faribault, to Clarence (Lucky) and Ina "Anne" (Barc) Bauer.

Survivors include his wife, Lavinda Bauer, Austin; sons and daughter-in-law, Mike and Anne Bauer, Rose Creek; Ashley Bauer and Angela Tabor, Austin; daughters, Jammie Bauer, Austin; Hilary Bauer, Austin; nine grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, Stanley and Jodi Bauer, Flippin, Ark.; Ricky Bauer, Owatonna; sisters and brother-in-law, Linda and Gary Balfe, Albert Lea; Janet Bauer, Owatonna; Cindy Mathews, Blue Lake, Calif.; family and friends.

Robert L. Christopherson

1928-2003

Robert L. Christopherson, age 75, of Cohasset, Minn. died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minn.

He was born Feb. 5, 1928, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. to Olaf and Dorothy (Winkels) Christopherson. In 1946, he graduated from Pacelli High School and began employment at George A. Hormel & Co. in Austin, Minn.

On Sept. 2, 1950, he was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Daily in Austin, Minn.

Robert was federalized into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and received an Honorable Discharge in May of 1952. At that time, he returned to his employment with the Hormel Co. where he remained for the next 42 years. He was blessed with six wonderful children. Bob was an active member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Austin, Minn. and also a member of Minnesota Concerned Citizens for Life. In 1991, Bob and Bev moved to northern Minnesota to live out their retirement years. Bob enjoyed gardening, walking in the woods and playing with his grandchildren. His concern for others was always apparent and his quick wit will be deeply missed.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother and one grandson.

He is survived by his wife: Beverly; three daughters: Cathy Battles of Faribault, Minn., Mary (Tom) Jones of Cohasset, Minn., Judy (Marc) Busker of Belle Plaine, Minn.; three sons: Dave, John (Jude) and Bob (Ha) Christopherson, all of Maple Grove, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister: Betty Wagner of Austin, Minn.; three brothers: Bill (Mary) Christopherson of Austin, Minn., David (Margaret) Christopherson of Long Meadow, Mass., Michael (Neita) Christopherson of Hutchinson, Kan.

Visitation and Funeral Mass: Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2003, at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Cohasset, Minn. Rev. Fr. Bruce Engen and Rev. Fr. Roman Spors will officiate.

Graveside Services: will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Austin, Minn.

Frances Bridget (nee Tuite)
Coleman

1913-2003

Frances Bridget Coleman, 89, formerly of Austin, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Shorewood Place, Rochester.

She was born Dec. 5, 1913, in County Monahan, Ireland, to Lawrence and Mary Ellen (Kelly) Tuite.

On June 14, 1947, she married John Patrick Coleman in Peterborough, England. He died July 13, 1991. Frances worked as a registered nurse.

Survivors include her children, Peter (Margaret) Coleman, Rochester; Maureen (Ron) Halverson, Plymouth; Margaret (Richard Haines) Coleman, Seattle, Wash.; Ann (Ron) Clark, Cold Spring; Jim (Jody) Coleman, St. Paul; eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Larry and John; sisters, Norah and Rita.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2003, with a 5 p.m. wake service and a 7 p.m. CCW rosary and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father William Becker and Father Paul Nelson officiating. The casket bearers will be Jason Halverson, Emily Eytcheson, Elizabeth Coleman, Kate Clark, Dan Clark and Matthew Haines.

Donald T. Enright

1918-2003

Donald T. Enright, 84, of Austin, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at his home.

He was born July 23, 1918, in Rose Creek, to Emmett and Amelia (Schu-macher) Enright.

On June 21, 1944, he married Rosina Fasbender. She died Jan. 25, 2001.

Don was a retired employee of Hormel Foods.

Survivors include sons, James Enright, Elk River; Dennis Enright, Bemidji; Richard (Cecelia) Enright, Austin; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Dale (Louise) Enright, Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, March 11, 2003, and Wednesday for one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Service: 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Father William Becker officiating. The casket bearers will be John Corbin, Jodi Enright, Mike Enright, Keith Enright, Chris Enright and Larissa Enright.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91.

Michael P. Finbraaten

1963-2003

Michael P. Finbraaten, age 40, of Adams, died from complications due to a farm accident on Saturday, March 22, 2003, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

He was born Feb. 20, 1963, in Rochester, Minn., to Robert and Mary (Scharberg) Finbraaten. He graduated from Southland High School in 1981 and from Mankato State University in 1985. He returned home where he began working for the Farmers State Bank of Adams and Rose Creek. He also continued to farm on his family farm.

After an extensive courtship, he married Sue Golombowski on July 16, 1994, in Johnsburg, Minn. In 1996, Michael became president and majority owner of the two branches of the bank.

He was a member of the Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams and served on the church board, a board member of the Mower County United Way, a member of the Cattlemen's Association, and served as a volunteer fireman for the Adams Fire Department. Mike was involved in many things: lead singer for the group "The Bankers," a member of "The Traveling Idiots," "The Great 8," and was part owner of the "Schafinski" Pontoon.

He loved his wife and kids, his cows, running, and farming. He was generous, quick-witted, and a friend to all.

The family requests that people wear casual and "fun" attire to the funeral service at the church and in lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Mike Finbraaten Scholarship fund.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 27, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Little Cedar Lutheran Church with the Rev. Shari A. Mason and the Rev. Gregory Leif officiating. Interment will be in the Marshall Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Adams Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday one hour before the service.

Pianist will be Laura Freund. Casket bearers will be the members of The Great 8: Douglas Finbraaten, Steve Golombowski, David Golombowski, Kevin Blake, Mark Reinartz, Jim Douty and Ron Koenigs.

Michael is survived by his wife: Sue (Suzanne) Finbraaten of Adams, Minn.; son: Nick Finbraaten of Adams, Minn.; daughter: Meg Finbraaten of Adams, Minn.; parents: Robert and Mary Finbraaten of Adams, Minn.; sister and brother-in-law: Ruth and Cole Carson of Fairbanks, Alaska; brother: Douglas Finbraaten of Robbinsdale, Minn.; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Stephen and Colette Golombowski of Johnsburg, Minn.; nieces and nephews.

L. Maxine (nee Seavey) Garriott

1913-2003

L. Maxine Garriott, 89, formerly of the Austin and Blooming Prairie areas, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at a nursing home in San Rafael, Calif.

She was born Sept. 26, 1913, in Austin, to Sam and Ella (Josephson) Seavey of rural Blooming Prairie.

Survivors include daughter, Bernice Rehnen, Larkspur, Calif.; sister, Gladys Peterson, Blooming Prairie; cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlo; son-in-law, Jim Rehnen; brother and sister-in-law, Clifford and Opal Seavey; and brother-in-law, Marion Peterson.

Service: Memorial services will be at a later date.

Interment: In Tracy, Calif.

Edythe P. Gemmel

1902-2003

Edythe P. Gemmel, 100, of Austin, formerly of San Diego, Calif., died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Austin Medical Center.

Edythe was born October 5, 1902, in Austin Township, Mower County, the daughter of Arthur and Fannie (Durst) Gemmel. She attended the Cedar City School and Austin High School. While in Austin she worked at Chuck's Grocery, the Albert Thoms Department Store and Mix Cleaners. On Jan. 4, 1936, she moved to Phoenix, Ariz., with Verna Cory and then on to San Diego, Calif., in 1945. While in San Diego, she worked as a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy for 29 years, retiring on June 19, 1970. In 1992 she moved to St. Paul's Villa retirement community. Following her 100th birthday in October 2002, she returned to Austin to be near her family.

Edythe had a great love for children and said her only disappointment in life was not being allowed to adopt a child as a single person.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by sister-in-law, Melda Gemmel, Austin; nieces and nephews; special friend, Marge Bardsley, San Diego, Calif.; and a host of their friends in San Diego.

Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the cemetery with the Rev. Patricia M. Toschak officiating.

Interment: Cedar City Cemetery.

Lillie M. (nee Muffley) Gordon

1916-2003

Lillie M. Gordon, 87, of Austin, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born March 7, 1916, in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, to Charles and Stella (Dunlop) Muffley. She graduated from East Stroudsburg High School.

In 1936, she married Arthur S. Gordon. Lillie worked as a floral designer for Bender Gardens and Howells Greenhouses in Pennsylvania. She worked as an assembler for GE. She also worked some time as a secretary. She liked spending time with her family, plants and flowers, and playing cards.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Marie Gordon, Austin; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother and sisters-in-law, Jess and Betty Muffley, Stroudsburg, Pa.; Fran Muffley, Geneva, N.Y.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the mortuary with a 6:15 p.m. Prayer Service with the Rev. Glenn L. Monson officiating.

Interment: Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg, Pa.

Irene Mae (nee Foster) Graham

1925-2003

Irene Mae Graham, 77, of Lake Mills, Iowa, formerly of the Grand Meadow area, died Monday, March 3, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center, Mason City, Iowa.

She was born Oct. 27, 1925, in Dexter Township to William and Ida (Braaten) Foster. She was raised and attended school in the Sargeant area and was confirmed in the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church.

She married Henry Vogelsang and later divorced. She was then married to Harold Graham and they were later divorced.

Irene managed a fruit stand in the Clear Lake, Iowa area and owned a fruit stand in Manly, Iowa. She also worked as a housekeeper and a homemaker. She enjoyed country western music, baking donuts and peanut butter cookies and her family.

Lester Henry Green

1917-2003

Lester Henry Green, 85, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Season's Hospice, Rochester.

He was born April 21, 1917, in Mora, to Hiram and Edith (Richardson) Green. He was raised in Mora and later moved to the Austin area.

On May 27, 1939, he married Ellen M. Bates in Austin.

Lester retired from Hormel Food Corporation after 37 years of employment. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Austin. He served in the Navy during World War II. Lester enjoyed farming, fishing, flowers and NASCAR racing.

Survivors include son, Jack (Betty) Green, Austin; daughter, Janet (Lyle) Engelhardt, Austin; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Pat (Dorothy) Green, Vandalia, Ill.; sister, Florence (Ervin) Botkins, California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and one son.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, March 24, 2003, at the funeral home and Tuesday at the church for one hour before the service.

LaVonne Harriet Gronseth, 72, of Brownsdale, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Season's Hospice, Rochester.

She was born May 5, 1930, to Haven and Myrtle (Fosse) Gulbranson in Vernon Township.

On Feb. 28, 1953, she married Wallace Gronseth in Hayfield. LaVonne was a life long resident of the area. She was a library assistant for the Brownsdale Elementary School, a member of Evanger Lutheran Church and the Evanger Ladies Aid. She loved family and flowers.

Survivors include her husband, Wallace Gronseth, Brownsdale; daughters, Wallene (Marty) Stubstad, Rochester; LaMae (Joel) Fritze, Hayfield; Diane (Kevin) Peterson, International Falls; Dawn (Jeff) Haugen, Cannon Falls; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and first husband, Archie Gronseth.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2003, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Elizabeth M. (nee Weicherding) Haeny

1912-2003

Elizabeth M. Haeny, 90, of Austin, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 9, 1912, in Sleepy Eye, to John and Susan (Ludwig) Weicherding.

She married Elmer G. Haeny at St. Mary's Church in Sleepy Eye. They later moved to Austin.

Elizabeth was a wife and homemaker. She enjoyed cooking and baking, often sharing her bread with neighbors and friends. She enjoyed her card and birthday clubs. Although she had 12 grandchildren, many other young people called her "Grandma." Her children and grandchildren visited often.

Elizabeth was a longtime member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and was active in her church unit.

Survivors include sons, Richard (Barb) Haeny, San Antonio, Texas; Robert (Betty) Haeny, Sauk Rapids; Steven (Suzie) Haeny, Sauk Centre; daughters, Susan (Michael) Whalen, Edgewood, Ky.; Mary McAlister, Austin; Kathleen Haeny, Indianapolis, Ind.; daughter-in-law, Lynn LaPlant, Tucson, Ariz.; son-in-law, Dennis Dalen, New Hope; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and one sister, her husband; daughter, Barbara Haeny; granddaughter, Lisa Whalen; and a great-grandson.

Hazel O. Halstenson

1908-2003

Hazel O. Halstenson, 94, of Austin, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Comforcare.

She was born May 12, 1908, in Decater, Illinois, to Edward and Olivia Arnold. She married Carmen H. Halstenson on Jan. 9, 1943, in Austin.

Hazel lived in Austin for most of her life. She worked at Hormel Foods for over 30 years and was a deputy matron for Mower County for 10 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, antiques and spending time with family.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Barbara (Don) Walker, Omaha, Neb.; three grandsons; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Madge Erickson, Austin; brother, Clifford Arnold, Austin; relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters and a great-grandson.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, March 3, 2003, at the funeral home and Tuesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Wendell King Hamlin

1918-2003

Wendell King Hamlin, 84, died March 23, 2003, at the Parkview Nursing Home, Ostrander.

He was born Oct. 11, 1918, in Forestville Township, to Fred and Nellie (Grabau) Hamlin. In 1935, the family moved to the farm north of LeRoy. Wendell farmed with his parents until 1951, when he began working for Hormel, where he was employed for 31 years.

On Aug. 19, 1951, he married Ruth Jacobson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived in Austin for 47 years.

Wendell enjoyed his cars, playing music, and traveling. He lived at the Ostrander Nursing Home for three years.

Survivors include his brother, Dean Hamlin, LeRoy; nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and sister, Frances Norby.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the funeral home and Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Oliver W. Hillier Sr.

1917-2003

Oliver W. Hillier Sr., 85, of Austin, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at St. Marks Lutheran Home.

He was born Sept. 15, 1917, in Austin, to George and Martha (Beattie) Hillier. He grew up on the family farm in the Austin Township. He maintained the family farm his entire life.

On May 3, 1941, he married Grace Wheeler in Hayfield.

Oliver served on the Austin Township Board for 21 years and was a part of the Mower County Planning Commission for nine years. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Austin.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Hillier, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Oliver Jr. and Joanne Hillier, Redwood Falls; David and Carolyn Hillier, Austin; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Marian Hillier and Caroline Ziemer; brother, James Hillier; and son, Ronald Hillier.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the mortuary and Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Gail A. (Kittelson) Meister

1935-2003

Gail A. Meister, 68, of Rochester, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at her home.

Gail A. Kittelson was born Feb. 10, 1935, in Austin, where she grew up.

She met Vern Meister in 1952 and they were married on Sept. 27, 1953, in Austin. After their marriage, they moved to Rose Creek, then to Pine Island in 1979. In 1985, they moved to Rochester. Gail was employed for 16 years in Mayo Clinic's medical lab department.

She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Rochester. Gail liked sewing, quilting and gardening. She also enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and was very interested in genealogy.

Survivors include her husband, Vern Meister; daughter, Melani Meister, Minnetonka; son, Darrin (Missy) Meister, Pine Island; three grandchildren; brother, Loren Kittelson, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Larry M. Kruger

1943-2003

Larry M. Kruger, 59, of Austin, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at his home.

He was born July 26, 1943, in Austin, to Marvin and Lola (Orpen) Kruger.

He graduated from Austin High School, attended the Austin Junior College and graduated from Mankato State College with a degree in elementary education. He taught elementary school in Clinton, Iowa for 27 years, and later in his career worked with the Computer Learning Center. Following his retirement, he moved back to Austin. He loved children and the arts, and had been a dance instructor.

Survivors include mother, Lola Lysne, Austin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Lawrence Jensen, Austin; Becky and Steve Schneberger, Austin; step-sisters and husbands, Pam and Alan Wigant, Austin; Judy and Mike Wolfe, Tempe, Ariz.; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father.

David P. Leuer

1937-2003

David P. Leuer, age 65, a longtime member of the Austin community, passed away peacefully at his home early Wednesday morning, March 19, 2003.

Dave was born on November 11, 1937, to Peter and Kathryn (Lyness) Leuer.

A lifelong farmer, his passions in life were the love of his wife, his family, his faith and God's earth. He was born and raised in Aurora, Ill. and graduated from St. Edward High School.

He married the love of his life, Carol Thomas in 1962. They lived in Sugar Grove, Ill. where all six of their children were born. They relocated to Austin in 1976.

Dave will be deeply missed by his family and friends who knew him as a strong, faith-filled man who always kept his family first. He spent many years actively involved with Queen of Angels Parish, where he held many offices. Dave tirelessly provided for his family, working on his farm from dusk until dawn, yet he always made time for things that truly mattered, his wife and children.

Shirley M. Meyer, 73, of Austin, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at her home.

She was born April 4, 1929, in Austin, to Bert and Mabel (Krambier) Meyer. She worked as a bookkeeper at Norwest Bank (Wells Fargo) for many years. Shirley enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, crafts and reading. She loved dogs, her birds and all animals.

Robert Michael Herbert Mitchell was born Feb. 7, 1973, to Donovan C. and LeAnn (Sullivan) Mitchell in Austin. After attending Austin High School, Robert worked doing janitorial jobs.

On Nov. 4, 1996, he married Tanya Haarstad in Albert Lea. Robert was employed by A. Best Janitorial in Austin and at Schweigert's Foods in Albert Lea. He was currently on disability due to a riding accident. He volunteered for Mower Council for the Handicapped and enjoyed woodworking and being with his family.

Joseph H. Monahan

1918-2003

Joseph H. Monahan, age 84, of Waseca, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at the Lake Shore Inn Nursing Home in Waseca.

Born in Lemon, S.D. on April 19, 1918, he was the son of James Monahan and Alta Shied. As a young boy his parents separated and he was adopted by his father's new wife, Pricilla Darling. Following his adopted mother's death he lived at the Catholic Convent and Orphanage in Alta Vista, Iowa. He later lived on a farm with his relatives and at the age of 19 began working as a dairy herdsman for Sterling Farms. He worked as a photographer during the depression until opening two tent roller rinks which were later destroyed by a tornado.

He married Betsie (Betty) Waller Aug. 16, 1941, in Austin and then worked for Austin Dairy as a routeman while running a bicycle repair shop. In 1946, he bought the Pheasant Cafe and his family moved to Waseca. In the basement of the cafe, he began collecting model railroad trains as a hobby. In 1959, he bought Draheim Dairy which became Golden Dairy and then became Monahan's Dairy. Along with his sons he later was co-owner of Mono Trucking. In 1978, he started Joe's Saw Sharpening and Bicycle Repair which he operated until his death.

He enjoyed riding motorcycle including a trip to Colorado when he was 80 years old. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca and the Steele Wheels Motorcycle Club since 1991.

He is survived by three sons, Byron Monahan and his wife Marlys, Jack Monahan and his wife Barb, Jeffrey Monahan and his wife Kaye, all of Waseca; one daughter, Barbara Kedrowski and her husband Bob of Avon, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; He is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dwight and Julia Waldron, Ralph Christenson, and Linda Waller, all of Austin. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister, Evelyn Hicks.

Visitation will be held at Kinder-Dennis Home for Funerals in Waseca on Monday, March 10, 2003, from 4 to 8 p.m. and continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca with Rev. Scott Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at Woodville Cemetery in Waseca.

Memorials are preferred to Waseca Area Hospice.

Casket bearers will be grandsons: Corey Monahan, Jared Kedrowski, Joe Monahan, Jon Kedrowski, Robbe Kedrowski, Jim Monahan, and Michael Monahan. Honorary casket bearers will be granddaughters: Traci Monahan, Krista Kedrowski, Katie Monahan, and Meghan Monahan.

Beulah F. (Cafourek) Nelson

1908-2003

Beulah F. Nelson, 94, of Austin, died Monday, March 3, 2003, at St. Ottos Care Center, Little Falls.

She was born Oct. 19, 1908, in Freeborn County, to John and Frances (Svejkovsky) Cafourek. The family moved to Austin in 1919 and Beulah graduated from Austin High School in 1925. She was employed at Dr. Paul Leck's home for one year, then as a waitress for 10 years at The Fox Hotel.

On Oct. 6, 1932, she married Raymond L. Nelson. In 1945, the couple purchased a store in Brownsdale which they operated until 1969. They then purchased an Airstream trailer and visited all 48 states. In 1970, they moved to Austin.

Beulah joined the Episcopal Church in 1929. She served as president of Bishop Gilbert Unit several times. She organized the annual Episcopal Sauerkraut Dinner and made the kraut for 50 years, retiring from that job in 1989. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, The Senior Citizens, Forever Fifty Club of Salvation Army, ZCBJ Lodge, and Unity Chapter #29 Order of the Eastern Star in Austin. She served twice as the Worthy Matron of the Brownsdale Mizpah Eastern Star Chapter.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidering, needle point, reading, cooking and gardening.

Survivors include daughter, Kathryn (Dennis) Danielson, Fort Ripley; brother, Milo (Dorothy) Cafourek, Glenville; nieces and nephews.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Scott Monson officiating. Casket bearers will be Kenneth Cafourek, Randy Baley, John Cafourek, Paul Ellis, Robert Baley Jr. and Ron Kos.

Esther R. (nee Schumacher)
NELSON

1918-2003

Esther R. Nelson, 84, of Austin, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at her home.

She was born March 25, 1918, in Windom Township, to Edward and Marie (Strobach) Schumacher.

On March 21, 1941, she married Lyle L. Nelson in Osage, Iowa. Esther was a retired employee of Hormel Foods, having worked in various departments. She enjoyed her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Lyle Nelson, Austin; daughter, Kay DeLaMater, Austin; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Arnold (Cis) Schumacher, Minneapolis; sisters, Lillian (Jack) Flynn, Austin; Leona (Don) Mattice, Austin; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, March 14, 2003, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Harold Deye officiating. Casket bearers will be Manly Jensen, Thomas Flynn, Hiram Jensen, Steven Flynn, Eugene Nelson, Robert Taylor, Jeff Flynn, Jim Mattice, Joe Mattice, Tim Flynn, Adam Downey, Christopher Heimsness and Galen Knotts.

Marcella L. (nee Leckness)
NESBITT

1926-2003

Marcella L. Nesbitt, age 76, of Austin, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born May 6, 1926, in Hayfield, Minn., to A. Gerhard and Claudine (Kyllo) Leckness. Marcella grew up in Hayfield. She graduated from Austin High School in 1944. She moved to Washington, D.C. where she was a secretary for the Naval Command at the Pentagon.

On May 22, 1949, she married Lynn Marvin Nesbitt in Washington, D.C. Together they had five children. After his death in 1967, Marcella and her children moved to Austin, Minn. She was a secretary for the Austin Public Schools for many years until her retirement. After her retirement she spent winters in Apache Junction, Ariz.

She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and Kitchen Band at the Cedars.

She enjoyed bingo, traveling and spending time with friends and family.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 13, 2003, at 1 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roberta Flood officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church for one hour before the service. The organist will be Neal Erickson and the soloist will be Kaye Perry. Casket Bearers will be Gene Leckness, Eli Mathias, Lynn Nesbitt, Dave Folken, Mike Arens and Jeramie Kramer.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Marcia Nesbitt of Milwaukee, Wis., Karen and Gary Kramer of San Antonio, Texas, Ruth and Bob Arens of Austin, Minn.; sons and daughter-in-law, Jack and Debbie Nesbitt of Denver, Colo., Bob Nesbitt of Plymouth, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Nancy Leckness of Hayfield, Minn.; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Bob Bates of Little Falls, Minn.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Lila Staley; and special friend, Paul King.

Bertha (nee Burma) O'Groske

1919-2003

Bertha O'Groske, 83 of LeRoy, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at her daughter Betty's home of kidney failure.

She was born April 24, 1919, to Jasper Burma and Martha Schulte Burma in Buffalo Center, Iowa.

On Feb. 16, 1947, she married Walter O'Groske in Wells. They lived in Wells, Dexter and Ostrander. After Walter died in 1970, Bertha lived in Ostrander, Minneapolis and, for the last 19 years, in LeRoy.

Bertha loved reading and making scrapbooks, gardening, garage sales, casinos, traveling, church activities and tea with her daughter, Betty.

Survivors include her children, Rolland (Bernice) O'Groske, Rochester; Carol Louks, Stewartville; Melvin (Charlene) O'Groske, Ostrander; Maggie (Rob Widga) O'Groske, Minneapolis; Marlys (LeRoy) Rowe, Wykoff; Sue O'Groske, Spring Valley; Betty (Larry) Boehmer, LeRoy; daughter-in-law, Alice O'Groske, Byron; son-in-law, Clint Smith, Mitchell, S.D.; 24 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Katie (Harold) Walters, Mentor; six sisters-in-law; nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Walter Jr. and Randy; daughter, Diane; five brothers and two sisters.

Visitation: 5 to 8 today, March 24, 2003, at the funeral home and Tuesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday at LeRoy Lutheran Church in LeRoy.

Interment: Ostrander Cemetery.

Edwin B. Perkins

1924-2003

Funeral services for Edwin B. "Perky" Perkins, age 78, of Albert Lea will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Bayview/ Freeborn Funeral Home. Private burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services on Thursday.

Edwin died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer.

Edwin Bernard Perkins was born Dec. 6, 1924, in Detroit, Mich., to Bernard and Helen (McDonald) Perkins.

He married Elaine Johnson in 1946. She passed away in 1974. On April 24, 1987, Edwin married Janice Christenson in Albert Lea.

Edwin was a self-employed contractor in Austin and was also involved in sales for several years. He resided in Albert Lea for 35 years. Edwin enjoyed music, playing harmonica and accordion.

Survivors include his wife, Janice; daughter, Celeste and husband Hardy Price of Rochester; five brothers, Joseph and wife Pat of Coos Bay, Ore., David and wife Marlys, and Daniel and wife Connie, all of Rochester, Paul and wife Judi of Austin, and Timothy and wife Sue of Apple Valley; three sisters, Marianna DeGiorgio of Garden City, Mich., Mary and husband Gordon Lampman of Pleasant Prairie, Wis., and Lois and husband Marvin Lovlein of Klemith Falls, Ore.; father-in-law, Clayton Warke of Albert Lea; brothers and sisters-in-law, David and wife Karen Warke of New Richland, and Roger and wife Janet Loken of Rochester; and nieces and nephews.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Elaine; one brother and one sister; and mother-in-law, Eileen Warke.

Edwin will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Blessed be his memory.

Lois Mae (nee Sigman) Sawvel

1920-2003

Lois Mae Sawvel, 82, of Sargeant, died March 8, 2003, at Stewartville Care Center, Stewart-ville.

She was born Sept. 27, 1920, to Grover Cleveland and Maude (Smith) Sigman in Amelia, Neb.

On Nov. 10, 1943, she married Robert Glenn Sawvel in Gering, Neb. Lois and Glenn lived in Morrill, Neb. until 1962, when the couple moved to a farm near Sargeant. Lois worked at Erdman's in the meat department, as a meat wrapper for 14 years. Then she was a housekeeper at St. Mary's Hospital for 10 years, retiring in 1990. After Robert's retirement the couple moved into Sargeant.

Lois was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Hayfield. She enjoyed playing cards, and belonged to a card club and Chatter Club. She enjoyed family and friends, crocheting, knitting, and traveling. Red was her favorite color.

Survivors include sons, Terry (Diane) Sawvel, Carmichael, Calif.; Grover F. Sawvel, Winneconne, Wis.; brother, Cleveland Sigman, Spring Valley; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2003, and Friday for one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Service: 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Donald D. Budd officiating.

Interment: Grandview Memorial Gardens, Rochester.

Funeral Home: Czaplewski Family Funeral Home, Hayfield.
