Walter R. Oudekerk

1923-2003

Walter R. Oudekerk, formerly of Austin and recently of Prior Lake, Minn., died on Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Hospice Homes and Suites, Elko, Minn.

Born in Rose Creek, Minn. on Dec. 19, 1923, to Anna and Henry Oudekerk, Walter is survived by sisters, Elizabeth Larson of Tacoma, Wash.; Anna Brown of Philip, S.D.; twin brother, Wallace of Mountain Home, Ark.; and numerous nieces and nephews as well as friends and neighbors in the Austin area and in Ashdown, Ark. Walter retired from the Hormel Co. in the early 1980s and enjoyed fishing and spending warm winters in Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Worlein Funeral Home, 1801 4th St. NW, Austin. Refreshments will follow at the funeral home. Private internment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society at 3316 W. 66th St., Edina, MN 55435 or Fairview Hospice Program, 2450 26th Ave. S., Mpls., MN 55406 are preferred.

Isabel Mary (nee Griffin) Petersdorf

1914-2003

Isabel Mary Petersdorf, 88, of Austin, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at St. Marks Lutheran Home.

She was born June 21, 1914, in Riceville, Iowa, to Roscoe and Anna (McIlravy) Griffin. She graduated from the McIntire High School in 1932.

On March 11, 1946, she married Theodore Petersdorf in South Dakota.

Isabel lived in Austin for most of her life and was the manager of the Coffee Shop at St. Olaf Hospital for 32 years. A member of the St. Olaf Hospital Auxiliary, she volunteered over 8,000 hours. She was a member of the First United Methodist where she was active in circle and UMCW.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and James Carothers, Johnston, Iowa; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son, James; daughter-in-law, Jean; two sisters and two brothers.

Visitation: One hour before the service Wednesday at the church. There will be no reviewal.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Patricia M. Toschak officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Theodore Alvin Ranum

1909-2003

Theodore Alvin Ranum, 94, of Austin, died June 23, 2003, at his home.

He was born January 7, 1909, to Arne and Emma (Mathieson) Ranum in Lansing Township, where he lived his entire life except during World War II. Ted served as a medic in the Pacific Theatre from 1942 to 1945. A Hormel retiree, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include brother, Arnold Ranum, Albert Lea; sisters, Cora Braaten and Milda Gemmel, both of Austin; sister-in-law, Janeth Ranum, Austin; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, June 25, 2003, and Thursday for one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ronald Barnett officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 91.

Gladys V. (nee Choc) Rathke

1916-2003

Gladys V. Rathke, age 87, formerly of Austin, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at Lakeland Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Milford, Ind.

She was born May 20, 1916, in Austin, Minn., to Louis and Emily (Stiaskal) Choc. She attended school in Austin, Minn.

She married Harry C. Rathke in October 1936 in Austin, Minn.

Gladys was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Austin.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 28, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Greg Mannel officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday at the mortuary one hour before the service. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law: Bryan and Susan Rathke of Milford, Ind.; seven grandchildren: Bryan John Rathke of Atlanta, Ga., Katy Rathke of Mishawaka, Ind., Andrea and Tony Storms of Terre Haute, Ind., Jennifer Albert of Elkhart, Ind., Jay Agler of Portland, Ore., Jhauna Jo Rud of Portland, Ore., Chet Agler of Hanford, Calif.; four great-grandchildren; sister: Alice Leahy of Owatonna, Minn.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Harry in 1987; and daughter: Mary Agler.

Norbert Joseph Regenscheid

1926-2003

Norbert Joseph Regenscheid, 76, of Faribault, died of Hodgkin's disease Saturday, June 21, 2003, at the Yuma Regional Medical Center, Yuma, Ariz.

He was born July 9, 1926, in Jesseland, to Albert and Josephine (Kavitz) Regenscheid. He was raised in Henderson and moved with his family to Cannon Falls in 1941.

On Sept. 24, 1947, he married Donna Leimer at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Wing.

Norbert worked as a steamfitter at Hormel in Austin for 37 years. The couple had lived Faribault since 1971.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Regenscheid, Faribault; sons, Thomas (Mary) Regenscheid, Austin; Jay (Sandy) Regenscheid, Faribault; daughter, Ann Knapp, Faribault; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Andrew (Sherryl), Cannon Falls; sister, Rosemary Pagel, Cannon Falls; relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Milo, Robert, Roger, Jerome, Leo and Kenneth; and sister, Fidelis Regenscheid.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003, at the funeral home and Friday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 10 a.m. Friday, Divine Mercy Catholic Church at St. Lawrence in Faribault.

Interment: St. Lawrence Cemetery, Faribault.

Frederick W. Shoop Sr.

1947-2003

Frederick W. Shoop Sr., 56, of Austin, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at his home.

He was born Feb. 2, 1947, in Lewistown, Pa., to Ional E. and Mary S. (Mohnasky) Shoop.

On April 8, 1966, he married Phyllis Maxine Bollinger in Burnham, Pa.

Fred loved motorcycles, collecting Civil War memorabilia and his dog, "Wiener Dog." Fred was retired from the United States Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Shoop, Austin; sons, Rob (Carla Slifka) Shoop, Meherrin, Va.; Fred Jr. (Dawn) Shoop, North Carolina; Eric (Deb Minnich) Shoop, Grand Meadow; Brian (Michele) Shoop, Austin; six grandchildren; sister, Barbara Parks, Lewiston, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Tuesday.

Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at the funeral home with Rev. Pat Toschak officiating. Casket bearers will be Eric Shoop, Kelly Robinson, Brandon Hoium, John Dulitz, Phil Felt and Jeremy Flink.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91 and VFW Post #1216.

Gabriel Aaron Smith

1978-2003

Gabriel Aaron Smith, 24, of Waseca, Minn., died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Elm Homes.

He was born July 23, 1978, in Austin, Minn., the son of Greg and Elaine (Moltz) Smith.

Gabe was a resident at Elm homes since the spring of 1997. Gabriel had a disease called Tuberous Sclerosis that left him mentally handicapped and led to his brain tumor. Gabriel attended Special Early Education Childhood (SEEC) classes in the Austin Public Schools and graduated from Waseca High School. Gabriel enjoyed listening to music and loved to walk. Gabe also attended Camp Winnebago, Caledonia, Minn., for 16 summers. He enjoyed the company of family and his friends at Elm Homes.

Gabe had touched many people in his short lifetime. Some of them have dedicated their talents to teaching children because of Gabe's influence.

Gabriel worked at Jobs Plus in Waseca.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Elaine and Dale Erickson of Owatonna, Minn.; father, Greg Smith of Ankeny, Iowa; maternal grandparents, Chuck and Helen Moltz of Austin, Minn.; paternal grandmother, Doris Smith of Ankeny, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jesse and Laurie Smith of Austin, Minn.; Mike and Susan Erickson of Minneapolis; two nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, paternal grandfather and one uncle.

Visitation will be held at Michaelson Funeral Home on Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, June 12, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna, Minn. The Rev. Pat Toschak will be officiating.

Peter Bernard Stundahl

1913-2003

Peter Bernard Stundahl, 89, of Austin, died at Prairie Manor Care Center in Blooming Prairie Thursday, June 5, 2003.

He was born June 29, 1913, to Peder and Bertha (Anderson) Stundahl in Riceland Township, Freeborn County. Living in the Geneva, Oakland and Moscow area, he was baptized and confirmed at Oakland Lutheran Church and attended Sumner School in Austin. He also lived in St. Paul where he married Betty Jean Carlson on June 28, 1947. They lived in Austin for about 25 years. He worked for the Rock Island Railroad, retiring around 1982. He enjoyed card games, such as Whist, 500, Huckley Buck and Cribbage and also liked to fish and ride the mower.

Survivors include brother-in-law, Robert Carlson and sister-in-law, Mamie Stundahl, both of Austin, as well as nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; four sisters and two brothers.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Service: 2 p.m. Monday at Oakland Lutheran Church with Rev. LaDonna Ekern officiating.

Lola "Shirley" (Watkins)
TIEGEN

1920-2003

Lola "Shirley" Tiegen, 82, of Austin, died Friday morning, June 6, 2003, at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.

She was born Aug. 16, 1920, to Bert and Ruth (Morrey) Watkins in Solana Beach, Calif. She attended country school and became an employee of Hormel Foods. She married Adry Tiegen on June 28, 1942, in Oceanside, Calif. They made their home in Austin where they belonged to Crane Community Chapel. In March of 2001, she moved to Sacred Heart Care Center.

Survivors include her daughters, Kathy (Ray) Ellis, Dexter, and Pam Severson, Austin; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Doris (Dutch) Shanholtz, Queensland, Australia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Adry; five brothers and sisters.

Visitation: One hour before the service Monday, June 9, 2003, at the funeral home.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Interment: Rose Creek Enterprise Cemetery, rural Austin.

Clara Matilda (Siepelmeier)
WALLEN

1906-2003

Clara Matilda Wallen, 97, of Austin, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

She was born Jan. 17, 1906, in Unadilla, Neb., to August and Mary (Behrens) Siepelmeier. She graduated from Syracuse, Neb. High School and attended the University of Nebraska. She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse near Unadilla, Neb. and was married to Clarence E. Wallen on June 19, 1930. They moved to the East Coast, living in Boston, New Naven, Watertown, N.Y., Ohio and Wisconsin before moving to Storm Lake, Iowa, where they owned the Wallen Stores. As the business grew, they opened the Storm Lake Wholesale and Distribution and the Town and Country Discount. In 1997 Clara moved to Austin.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Storm Lake and the Methodist Manor Auxiliary. She was also a 50-year member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her son, Donald Wallen, Mesa, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Anne and Gary Leonard, Austin; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Josie Wallen and Ida Wallen.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the mortuary.

Service: Thursday at The United Methodist Church in Unadilla, Neb.

Interment: Unadilla Cemetery, Unadilla, Neb.

Emma (Joslin) Wells

1922-2003

Emma Wells, 81, formerly of Charles City, Iowa, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at her home in Austin.

She was born March 6, 1922, in Bremer County, to Elmer and Lois (Phelps) Joslin. She attended school in Bremer County. On Jan. 10, 1963, she married John Wells in Charles City. The couple lived in Riceville until the mid-1960s when they moved to Charles City. She was a member of Faith Bible Chapel. She enjoyed soap operas, fishing, bingo and was excellent at sewing and tatting.

Survivors include her son Jerry Keilsmeier, Waseca; caretaker, Kathleen Schuna, Austin; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Cathy Dull, Fairbault, and Connie Kielsmeier, Austin; and one sister-in-law, Jennie Boggess, Mason City, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers and one daughter, Barb Swancutt.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. A.C. Wegner, pastor of Faith Bible Chapel, officiating.

Emma Wells, 81, a former Charles City resident, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at her home in Austin, Minnesota.

Funeral services for Emma Wells will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. A.C. Wegner, pastor of Faith Bible Chapel, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday.

Louis Belshan, Jr.

1911-2003

Louis Belshan, Jr., age 91, of Austin, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

Louie was born May 20, 1911, in a log cabin, in Shellrock Township, Minnesota, to Louis and Josephine (Benesh) Belshan.

On February 20, 1935, he was united in marriage to Alice Plevka in Albert Lea.

Louie was a retired farmer, owner of a service station, worked as a school custodian and was manager of the Skyline Mall in Albert Lea. He worked at Wilson's Stockyard, as a plumber and served on school and township boards.

Louie took pride in lawning and he loved to dance, especially polka dancing to old time music in Myrtle at the Old Black Bottom and the Brick Hall. He was an avid watcher of the weather channel and the Lawrence Welk Show. He loved to visit. Being a farmer was a major part of his life.

Survivors include a son: Robert Belshan, Austin; a daughter and son-in-law: Delores and David Tschann, Austin; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Alva Belshan, Dallas, Texas; Fred and Gladys Belshan, Glenville; Milo and Betty Belshan, Albert Lea; three sisters: Emily Cech, Glenville; Josephine Cech, Glenville; Helen Dockwell, Hayward.

He is preceded in death by two brothers: Edward and Anton; one sister: Lillian; three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Myrtle with Rev. Daniel Baker officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in the Bohemian National Cemetery.

Victoria F. (Sippel) Shaw

1911-2003

Victoria F. (Sippel) Shaw, 91, of Austin, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the Adams Nursing Home.

She was born April 12, 1911, in Little Falls, to Joseph and Mary (Kolodgy) Sippel. She grew up in Albert Lea and graduated from St. Theodore's High School.

On Oct. 14, 1935, she married Robert R. Shaw in Albert Lea. The couple moved to Austin shortly thereafter.

Victoria was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church where she was active in the Rosary Society. She was a volunteer at the Philomathian Library. She was an accomplished seamstress, loved to garden, read, listen to music and dance and enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Robert R. Shaw, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Robert J. and Mary Shaw, Duluth; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Kellogg, Hastings; Suzanne and Roger Schweich, Hastings; Vicky and Craig Huber, Virginia Beach, Va.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, George Sippel, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Daniel and Fred Sippel; and sister, Dorothy Sippel.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, with a 4 p.m. rosary and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Service: 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father William Becker officiating.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery.

Martha (Weggum) Coumbe

1911-2003

Martha Coumbe, 91, of Park Rapids, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the St. Joseph's Area Health Services, Park Rapids.

She was born August 25, 1911, in Buhl, to Gust and Louise (Wik) Weggum. She grew up and attended school in Nashwauk on the Iron Range. She graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in physical education.

On June 12, 1936, she married S. L. "Len" Coumbe in Hibbing. They had two children. After living in Long Prairie for a few years, the family moved to Austin where they lived from 1947 until 1994, when they moved to Park Rapids to be near their son. Martha moved to the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids four years ago.

She was a former member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin and was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids. She enjoyed crocheting, playing bridge and fishing and was an avid sports fan.

Survivors include daughter, Connie (Don) Wilkie, Bloomington; son, John (Jan) Coumbe, Park Rapids; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, John (Rachael) Weggum, Grand Rapids; Per Weggum, Wadena; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sister, Marie.

Visitation: A reception will be held at the Heritage Living Center following the service.

Service: 1:30 p.m. memorial service Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at the Heritage Living Center Chapel in Park Rapids with Rev. Gene B. Broughton officiating.

Interment: Gilbert Cemetery, Gilbert.

Jack L. Rector

1926-2003

Jack Leroy Rector, 76, of Rose Creek, Minnesota died Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at Adams Health Care Center, Adams, Minnesota.

He was born March 29, 1926, to Ralph Leroy and Lula Ellen (Wells) Rector in Garden City, where he grew up and was a member of Christian Church. After attending school in Garden City, he went to work for Hormel Foods Corp., then served in the Navy from 1942 until 1945 aboard the USS Price in the North Atlantic. After World War II he returned to work at Hormel Foods where he worked for 40 years. He was married to Willena "Dutch" Kiefer in the 1980s, and she died shortly after. Jack raised veal calves and enjoyed canoeing and air boating.

Survivors include his sister, Dorothy Bartholomew, Rose Creek; brothers, Charles (Dorothy) Rector, Austin; Larry (Carol) Rector, Lyle; Allen (Juanita) Rector, Eagan; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at Austin Church of Christ with the Rev. David DeFor officiating.

Interment: 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Garden City Cemetery, Garden City.

Irene Ella (Quast)
TOLLERUD

1915-2003

Irene Ella Tollerud, 87, of Austin, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born June 24, 1915, in Mower County, to Cord John and Ida (Miller) Quast. She attended school in Austin, graduating from Austin High School in 1933. After completing her education, she worked for the Geo. A. Hormel Company for 10 years.

On August 6, 1937, she married Orrin P. Tollerud at the parsonage of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. They lived in Austin, where Irene enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, reading and traveling.

She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the Ladies Circle and the Milwaukee Women's Club. Orrin died Feb. 11, 1988.

Survivors include children, Odin Tollerud, White Bear Lake; Doris (Donald) Sabanish, Maple Park, Ill.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Anne (Donald) Thompson, Austin; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Elmer and Erwin "Pop" Quast; and sisters, Helen Meyer, Margaret Wehner, Alvina Hansen and Gladys Haney.

Visitation: Was 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at the funeral home and Thursday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: Was 10 a.m. today at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Rev. Kris K. Wee officiating.

Interment: Fairview Cemetery, near Oakland.

Edna A. (Hinzman) Johnson

1910-2003

Edna A. Johnson, 92, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Sunday, January 26, 2003, at St. Marks Lutheran Home.

She was born Dec. 27, 1910, to Frank and Frances (Macker) Hinzman in Guttenberg, Iowa, where she attended school.

On June 8, 1930, she married Palmer N. Johnson in Guttenberg.

Edna worked at the Paramount Theater in Austin. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, the resident council of St. Marks and was active in many other activities at St. Marks.

Luzetta J. (nee McDonald) Carris

1905-2003

Luzetta J. Carris, 97, of Austin, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center.

She was born Jan. 31, 1905, in Clarion, Iowa, to James and Margaret (Mitchell) McDonald. She attended Wright County and Clarion schools.

On Feb. 11, 1927, she married Elmer Carris in Clarion, Iowa. Luzetta worked as a dressmaker. Elmer died in 1986 and Luzetta moved to Austin in 1987.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Clarion for 60 years, the Methodist church in Clarion for 69 years, and has attended Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin since 1987. She loved to sew, travel, and enjoyed her church circle.

Survivors include nieces, Viola Anderson, Rose Creek; Darlene (Mitch) Berhow, Oakland; Carla Miller, Onamia; many great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; sisters, Mina Peterson and Nell Jones; brothers, John McDonald and Alex McDonald.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at the funeral home and Friday at the church for one hour before the service at the church.

1935-2003

Ronald Charles Wilson, 67, of Austin, died Saturday, January 25, 2003, in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota.

He was born June 12, 1935, to Harry and Adah (Lewis) Wilson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A lifelong Austin resident, Ron was a member of the United States Air Force, and served in Korea. He retired from Hormel Foods and enjoyed fishing, golfing, photography and hunting.

Survivors include daughter, Ronda (Ron) Osborne, Hampton, Va.; sons, Christopher Wilson, Mark Wilson and Michael Wilson, all of Austin; sisters, Lorraine Palmer, Savannah, Ga.; Shirley Bogdanich, Austin; Helen Christensen, Albert Lea; Donna (Thomas) Whelan, Austin; Yvonne Cutcliff, Henderson, Nev.; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert J. Vaupel

1945-2003

Robert J. Vaupel, 57, of Grand Meadow, Mower county, Minnesota, died Saturday, January 25, 2003, of cardiac arrest at his home.

He was born May 8, 1945, in Sibley, Iowa. His family moved to Racine in 1956. He graduated from Stewartville High School in 1963 and was employed at IBM in Rochester from 1965 to 1971.

On August 6, 1966, he married Linda Taylor in Stewartville. They moved to Pleasant Valley Township in 1968, where they farmed. Robert also worked at J & S Repair in Grand Meadow.

He attended Assembly of God Church in Rochester and served as Pleasant Valley Township clerk for many years. He was a past member of the Farm Bureau and the Cattleman's Association and was active in various other farm organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Vaupel; sons, Mark (Annemarie) Vaupel, Grand Meadow; Mike (Angela) Vaupel, Kansas City, Mo.; Mat (Lisa), Racine; six grandchildren; mother, Mrs. Irlene Vaupel, Grand Meadow; brother, Doug Vaupel, Bellingham, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the funeral home and until 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Also, Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Kevin M. Justice, 44, of Ankeny, Iowa, died Jan. 23, 2003, Mercy Medical Center.

He was born in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota. He lived in St. Cloud for 11 years. He lived in Ankeny, Iowa, for 10 years and was a cytotechnologist at Mercy Medical Center.

Survivors include wife Marcia Justice, Ankeny, Iowa; step-son Nicholas Bern, Ankeny, Iowa; mother Donna Justice, Austin; sister Rebecca Olson, Little Canada.

Edmund Draheim Sr.

1912-2003

Edmund Draheim Sr., 90, of Owatonna, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, January 23, 2003, at Cedarview Nursing Home in Owatonna.

He was born on October 25, 1912, in a small, German farming community in the Ukraine to Emil and Ida (Schlender) Draheim.

When he was 4 years old, his family was driven off their land by the Bolsheviks. The family moved near Danzig in East Prussia. When East Prussia became part of Poland in 1925, the family again lost their land and immigrated to the United States and settled in Austin.

Edmund began work at Hormel in 1927 and retired from the plant in 1975. He married Gladys Margaret Quandt in June 1937. He played softball and bowled. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and watching sports. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Austin.

In 1998, he and Gladys moved to Mankato and then to Owatonna in 1999. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna.

Survivors include sons, Edmund Jr. (Jane) Draheim, Owatonna; Charles (Peggy) Draheim, Mankato; David Draheim, Forest City, Iowa; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Barbara Rupkalvis, Rochester; sister-in-law, Leora Quandt, Grand Meadow; many nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by wife Gladys Draheim, and infant son.

Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at the funeral home.

Gladys H. Moehnke, 88, of Brownsdale, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Field Crest Care Center.

She was born June 23, 1914, in Olmsted County to Axel A. Scharberg and Gunheld Mogen.

On Jan. 2, 1937, she married Melvin C. Moehnke in Rochester.

Survivors include one daughter, Joyce (Dale) Peterson, Albert Lea; one son, Jeffrey (Anne) Mehnke, Mantorville; two grandchildren: Randy Peterson and Lisa Peterson; two great grandchildren: Ethan and Emily Peterson; one sister, Hilda Halvorson, Hayfield; one brother, Oscar Scharberg, Hayfield; many other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers: Carl and Aden, two sisters: Ethel and Ruth.

She resided most of her life in the Brownsdale and Austin area. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, doing crossword puzzles and embroidering and sewing and cooking.

Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Cemetery: Grandview Mem. Gardens.

Eunice I. (nee Rector) Holland

1904-2003

Eunice I. Holland, 98, of Winona, formally of Grand Meadow, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Lake Winona Manor in Winona.

She was born October 9, 1904, in Parker, S.D., to John and Josie (Seffinga) Rector.

She lived on a farm until the family moved into town. She attended Parker schools for 12 years. A two-year normal course enabled her to teach in country schools for three years. She later graduated with a teaching degree from Springfield, S.D. She taught two years at Avon, S.D., and three years at Witten, S.D.

She married CT (Ted) Holland on June 20, 1934, in Viborg, S.D. In 1946 they moved to Minnesota and lived in Norwood, Young America, and in 1950 they moved to Grand Meadow where Ted was superintendent of schools. After his retirement, the couple enjoyed winters in Mesa, Ariz.

She had six years of piano lessons and started playing for church at age 13. She played piano for many events. She taught Sunday school, Bible school, and enjoyed the study club to which she belonged. Ted died in l992, and she lived in the Watkins home and then moved to Lake Winona Manor. She loved old TV shows, playing her keyboard, and teaching people to play Mexican dominoes.

Survivors include three children, Cal (Lil) Holland, Lac du Flambeau, Wis.; Darlene Besch, Dyer, Ind.;

Karen (Bob) Theile, Winona; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister and one half brother.

Visitation: 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at the church until the service.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Grand Meadow with Rev. Greg Strunk officiating.

Interment: Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Helen Marie (nee Heard) Nelson

1931-2003

Helen Marie Nelson, 71, of Lyle, Minnesota, died Thursday, January 23, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

She was born July 2, 1931, in Lyle, to Floyd and Pearl Heard.

She and her sister Ruth lived for many years with her sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Lavern Austinson. After graduating from Lyle High School, she attended the Minneapolis School of Business. She returned to Austin to work in the Hormel Foods office.

On Oct. 14, 1950, she married Robert Nelson at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle. They made their home in Lyle for 52 years. She worked at the Evenson Bridal Shop and was the Deputy City Clerk for several years.

She belonged to Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church and the Lyle Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, crafts and making quilts for her family. She was an avid golfer and loved to watch sports on TV. She was a loving supporter of her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Paul Wilson, Mantorville; son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Penny Nelson, Plainview; daughter-in-law, Sandy Anderson, St. Cloud; 10 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Lavern Austinson and Warren Austinson; sister-in-law, Eileen Heard; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Iris and Clare Vincent; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; son, Jeffrey; three sisters and three brothers.

Nathan Archie Fischer

1917-2003

Nathan Archie Fischer, 85, of Austin, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 1, 1917, in Austin to Fred and Petra (Martin) Fischer.

He graduated from Austin High School in the spring of 1935 and married Dorothy Barnitz on Dec. 19, 1935. The couple enjoyed figure skating.

A corporate engineer with his name on numerous patents, Nate worked at Hormel Foods Corp. from 1933 until 1979. He was a handyman and enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Fischer; daughters, Susan (Jon) Brunsvold and Kathryn (Daniel) Davies, both of Minneapolis; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Wilbur Fischer and sister, Marguerite (Ellsworth) Esse, both of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clyde F. Fischer; three sisters, LaVonne Nelson, Ruth Gibson and Viola Sucha; and a great-grandson.

Margaret A. Rysavy, 88, of Austin, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born June 13, 1914, in Pratt, to Joseph and Stella (Hruska) Kvasnicka.

On May 11, 1939, she married Frank Rysavy at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Owatonna.

Margaret was a homemaker and a retired head cook of the St. Augustine School cafeteria. She was a member of Sacred Heart Hospice Auxiliary Philomathian Club and St. Augustine CCW-St. Catherine's Unit.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Rysavy, Austin; sons, Jim (Carol) Rysavy, Adams; Rick (Mary Swanson) Rysavy, Grand Rapids; daughters, Delores (John) Baur, Louisville, Ky.; Caroline (Les) Goergen, Adams; Mary Rysavy, Rochester; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Joe (Jean) Kvasnicka, Englewood, Calif.; Donald (Joanne) Kvasnicka, North Mankato; sisters, Lillian Seykora, Owatonna; Veronica (Ken) Zoller, Harmony.

Donald William Peroutka

1932-2003

Donald William Peroutka, 70, of Austin, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 10, 1932, in Austin, to Max and Mary (Bastyr) Peroutka.

He graduated from Austin High School in 1950, then worked briefly for Hormel. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served at the U.S. Naval Station in Pearl Harbor, on board the USS Nerius, and at Sangley Point in the Philippines before honorable discharge in 1955. He rejoined Hormel Foods Corporation and worked in the Austin and Corporate Offices until 1975. Later pursuits included a partnership in a cabinet shop, retail management, and accounting and inventory control activities for a small business and the Apollo stores.

On Sept. 22, 1956, he married Sharon A. Kolb.

Don was a member of St. Augustine Church, American Legion, Elks Club and Austin Country Club. He enjoyed golf, woodcarving, Canadian fishing trips, remodeling and bowling. He enjoyed his friends, Navy buddies and grandchildren.

Survivors include wife, Sharon, Austin; sons, Gregg (Leigh) Peroutka, Chanhassen; Tom (Brenda) Peroutka, Eden Prairie; three grandchildren; sister, Joann (Charles) Draeger, Austin; mother-in-law, Natalie "Tollie" Kolb, Austin; nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law.

Theodore J. Krob

1916-2003

Theodore J. Krob, 86, of Austin, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, of cancer, at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 5, 1916, in Austin, to Anton and Josie (Kos) Krob. He was raised in the Long Prairie area and on a farm near Rose Creek where he attended school.

On Nov. 30, 1939, he married Lorna L. Norman in Austin.

Ted worked at Hormel Foods for over 40 years, retiring in 1978.

He enjoyed gardening, fishing and sports. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and WFLA Lodge 38 of Austin.

Webster Johnson

1915-2003

Webster Johnson, 87, of Lyle, Mower county, Minnesota, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center, Austin.

He was born Dec. 25, 1915, to John O. and Mathilda (Arneson) Johnson in Lyle.

He graduated from Lyle High School in 1934, attended the University of Minnesota for three years then returned to Lyle to farm. He began a dairy operation and delivered milk door to door in Lyle. Later he raised beef cattle and crop farmed.

On Jan. 14, 1940, he married Marlys Richardson. They had seven children.

Webster served on the Lyle School Board, was a Mower County Commissioner, former member of Lyle Lions Club and member of Lyle Legion. He was a lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle where he was baptized, confirmed and married.

He enjoyed playing cards, watching sporting events and spending time with family. He also enjoyed traveling and spent 15 winters in McAllen, Texas.

Survivors include wife, Marlys; sons, John (Dolly) Johnson, Lyle; Roger (Maryann) Johnson, West St. Paul; Douglas (Jane) Johnson, Cottage Grove; Jerry (JoAnn) Johnson, Corcoran; daughters, Judith (Donald) Ransom, Lyle; Jacqueline (Dennis) Miller, Mankato; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lawrence, Odin and Chester; and a son, Robert.

Carl Charles Haag, 89, of Austin, formally of Elkton, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Comfort Care Good Samaritan Center, Austin.

He was born April 20, 1913, in Fonda, Iowa, to Charles and Anna (Groth) Haag.

On March 15, 1940, he married Marjorie Plymesser in Taopi.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, Austin; children, Marcelle (Ivan) Hodson, Farmington; Robert (Constance) McCullough, Jordan; Darlene (Lee) Eddy, Brookings, S.D.; Charles (Diane) Haag, Prior Lake; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Maude Pruisan, Decorah, Iowa.

Lillian Josephine Kaasa, 94, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Saturday, January 18, 2003, at the Sacred Heart Care Center, Austin.

She was born on September 5, 1908, in Lake Mills, Iowa, to James P. and Hannah (Ringstead) Neste. She attended school in Lake Mills.

On Aug. 16, 1930, she married Alerd C. Kaasa in Northwood, Iowa. They lived in the Austin area most of their married lives.

Lillian was a member of First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. She enjoyed art, sewing, poetry and making lefse.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Lilly Ann Kleven; daughter-in-law, Louise "Dolly" Kaasa; son-in-law, Lester Schultz; granddaughter, Breanna; grandson, Jamie; five sisters and four brothers.

Visitation: Wednesday at the funeral home for one hour before the service.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at the funeral home with the Rev. Lyndon West officiating.

Interment: Lakewood Cemetery.

Pearl L. Grothe

1907-2003

Pearl L. Grothe, 95, of Austin, died Saturday, January 18, 2003, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center.

She was born November 11, 1907, in Paxton, Nebraska, to Charles Record and Lillian Everett.

She graduated from Elkton High School and attended nursing school near Faribault.

On July 10, 1928, she married Leonard M. Grothe in Rochester. They moved to Austin shortly after the wedding.

The couple enjoyed spending their winters in Hot Springs, Ark. and watching dog and horse races.

Pearl was a member of Crane Community Chapel.

Survivors include daughter, Lorraine (Joris) Kyllo, Austin; daughters-in-law, Bernice Grothe, Austin; Lillian Grothe, Minneapolis; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters, Fern, Annie, Harriet, Mary and Lucille; sons, Ronald and James; and one grandson.

Visitation: Tuesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 11 a.m. memorial service Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Crane Community Chapel with the Rev. Randy Peterson officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Robert "Bob"
Gregerson

1930-2003

Robert "Bob" Gregerson, 72, of Grand Meadow, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center.

He was born Nov. 12, 1930, in Freeborn County, to Gilbert and Mathilda (Lindahl) Gregerson. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. He graduated Albert Lea High School in 1949.

On May 31, 1952, he married Maxine Peterson at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea.

Bob had various service station attendant jobs and pulled mobile homes until moving to Rochester in 1961, where he worked at Gambles in the Miracle Mile in the small motor shop. The family then moved to Grand Meadow in 1964. He attended Canby Area Technical School and worked as the area sales manager for Pride Seed Company. Bob and Maxine operated the Amoco Service Station in Grand Meadow, retiring in 1980.

Bob moved to the Grand Meadow Health Care Center in May of 2000.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine, Grand Meadow; children, Roberta (Lyle) Julson, Grand Meadow; Ramona Anderson, Grand Meadow; Rebecca (Dan) Clemens, Deer Harbor, Wash.; Georgia (Jeff) Ramaker, Lyle; Todd (Phyllis) Gregerson, Grand Meadow; Jeanine (Scott) Bly, Spring Valley; Michelle (Greg) Mettler, Cleveland, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sisters-in-law, Doris Gregerson and Bernie Gregerson, both of Albert Lea; nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and three brothers.

Visitation: There will be no visitation.

Service: 2 p.m. memorial service Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Bear Creek Lutheran Church with Rev. Bernard Daiker officiating.
