Dean Warner Dykeman, 81, of Austin died Monday, Oct. 19, 2009 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.

He was born April 24, 1928 in Winona, Minnesota, to Floyd and Alta (Warner) Dykeman. He attended country school and graduated from Winona High School. Dean served in the US Air Force from 1950 to 1951. He was employed as a lineman with the Interstate Power Company for 38 years, retiring in 1987. Dean was married to Jean Ford Holmquist on Dec. 8, 1956 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Dean had an undiminished love of the outdoors and was a member of the Izaak Walton Club and the Austin Conservation Club. He also served as a gun safety instructor and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dean was a member of the Grace Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Gary Holmquist and great grandson, Tadd Holmquist.

Dean is survived by his wife Jean Dykeman, Austin; son and daughters-in law, Steve and Susan Holmquist, St. Cloud, Minn., Mary Holmquist, Lolo, Mont.; daughter and son-in-law, Jody and Thomas Nygaard, Albert Lea; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Moldenhaurer, Austin; and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday Oct. 23 at Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Gordon Larson officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery in Austin, with Austin Post # 91 American Legion and Olaf B. Damn Post #1216 Veterans of Foreign Wars in charge of military rites. Friends may call at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday and for one hour before the service at the church on Friday.

The family prefers memorials to the Grace Baptist Church or to Lung Cancer.

John Michael Geraghty, 79, died Oct. 17, 2009 at his home in Clayton, Calif.

He was born in Austin on May 4, 1930.

He attended the University of Minnesota before serving for the US Air Force during the Korean War. After returning, he was employed by the Hormel Food Company in Austin. He was very active in the union, politics, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce, where he was named an Outstanding Young Man of America.

He moved to Concord, Calif. in 1967 where he resumed his education at St. Mary’s College in Moraga and San Francisco State University where he earned his degree in Psychology. He worked for the Contra Costa County DUI Program for almost 30 years where he counseled thousands of clients, many of whom are now his friends.

He was an active member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Clayton, Calif. where he taught confirmation classes for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He coached Little League in Austin and Concord, California and was an avid fan of the Oakland Athletics.

Mike will be remembered for his friendliness, his compassion for others, his courage through adversity, and commitment to his clients, and most all for his love of family and friends.

He will be sadly missed by his wife of 55 years Dorothy; children, Maurice Geraghty, Margaret Porter, and Colleen Geraghty; grandchildren, Kevin, Timothy, Sarah, Amy, Kelly and Leo; and sister Marjorie Voecks.

He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Edna, and his brothers Patrick, Edmond and Maurice.

Memorial Mass will held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 2009 at St. Bonaventure’s Church in Concord, Calif. followed by placement at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette, Calif.

Virgil Glen Finley, 71, passed into Eternal Life on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 surrounded by family at his home following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Virgil was born March 18, 1938 to John and Dorris (Engstrom) Finley in Leroy, Minn. He earned his GED from high school and worked as an auto mechanic for various businesses in Austin including Callahan Sales and Service before moving to Plainview in 1983. He was the Parts and Service Manager at Plainview Ford until retiring in 1989.

Virgil had a zest for life and to lived it to it's fullest. He enjoyed stock car racing in various local circuits and loved Nascar. He had a passion for his family and for spending time down at his summer home in Wabasha with his daughter and her family. He adored his grandson and nothing would stop him from attending his football and basketball games, where he cheered loudly and encouraged all of the kids.

He is survived by his wife, Marian (Andresen) Finley of Plainview; his daughter Traci (Jeff) Barnes; his beloved grandson Mike Barnes of Elgin; his children by marriage, including Kathy (Randy) Hagan of San Diego, Calif., Wayne (Brenda) Nelson of Austin, Gary (Shelly) Nelson of Austin; and his children from his marriage to Violet Kirchgatter, including Deb (Dan) Olson of Rochester, Sandra Crumbley of Tampa, Fla., Becky (Jeff) Krengel of Eden Prairie, Doug Finley of Mapleview, Don (Jenny) Finley of Brownsdale. Survivors also include his granddaughter Carrie (Jon) Ness of Columbia Heights; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers and five sisters.

He was preceded into eternal life by his parents, a brother, and a sister.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plainview on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, and one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Plainview.

Gail Etma Gabrielson, 87, of Austin, died Sunday morning, Oct. 18, 2009, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center in Grand Meadow.

She was born Feb. 28, 1922 to John T. and Emilie (Arndtson) Flatgard in Jackson, Minn. Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Windom, Gail moved to Austin in 1937 to complete her education and to work at Hormel Foods. Living with her brother, she graduated from Austin High School in 1939. She married Carl Harold Gabrielson on Nov. 23, 1946 in Grand Meadow. They made their home in Austin for their entire married life. Carl died on July 17, 1993. A member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and WELCA, she taught Sunday School and enjoyed handwork, flowers and gardening, cooking and canning.

She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Bonnell of Grandview, Wash.; a son, Daryl (Carol) Gabrielson of Ham Lake; six grandchildren, Heather (Jeff) Cadieux of Houston, Texas, David (Terry) Pouliot of Salem, Ore., Renee (Chris) Hopkins of Bothel, Wash., Anna Gabrielson of Ham Lake, Dena (Chris) Bucksa of St. Paul, Bryan (Jessica) Gabrielson of Anoka; four great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; a sister, Myrtle Evans of Hemet, Calif.

Gail was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her parents; eight brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 23, 2009 at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Worlein Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Grandview Cemetery, Austin.

Bryce Howe, 56, of Spring Valley died Tuesday Morning Oct. 20, 2009 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born July 15, 1953 in Austin to Stanley Howe and Beverly Berg Howe. He attended and graduated from Elkton High School in 1971. He went to work for Crenlo in Rochester in 1972 where he worked for more than 35 years. Bryce was united in marriage to Charlotte Horsman on Oct. 31, 1999 in Stewartville.

He was a volunteer fireman for the Dexter Fire Department and enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, working in his yard growing flowers and his kittens. Bryce had a big heart and his sense of humor will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife Charlotte of Spring Valley; daughters, Melanie VanBeek and Kara Howe both of Rochester, Minn. and Jacelyn (Larry) Ahrens of Milwaukee, Wis.; a stepson Chad Rich of Rochester; four grandchildren, Remington and Gavin VanBeek and Ethan and Wyatt Ahrens; five brothers, Bob (Joanne) Howe, Bill (Lea Ann) Howe, Brad (Shelly) Howe, Bart (Pam) Howe, Brian (Carmen) Howe all of Dexter, Minn.; and a sister Barb (Mike) Hatle of Adams, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Griffin Jacob; and a stepson, Brian Rich.

Funeral services for Bryce Allen Howe will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Oct. 24, 2009 at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley with the Rev. Karen Ashton officiating. Burial will be in the Washington Cemetery in Sumner Township, Fillmore County.

Visitation will be at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009.

Richard Charles Hemingway, 86, of the Taopi, Minn. area died Tuesday morning, Oct. 20, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Richard was born on Sept. 13, 1923, the son of Porter E. and Luella (Peterson) Hemingway in Mayville, Minn. He attended Hayfield High School and graduated in 1941. He served in the U.S. Air Force for three years. Richard was married to Carol Mattson on Aug. 1, 1943, in Hayfield. Carol died in 1989. He married Shirley Swank on Dec. 1, 2001, in Lyle, Minn.

Throughout his life Richard was a successful self-employed businessman. He owned and operated a feed business and farmed in the Hayfield and Elkton areas. His greatest venture was being the proud owner of The Rusty Rail in Taopi from 1969-1983. Dick loved his grandchildren, gardening, sports, and was known for his quick smile, firm handshake and pats on the back.

Richard is survived by his wife, Shirley Hemingway, Taopi area; two sons, Richard C. (Barbara) Hemingway, Tonasket, Wash., Rande C. (Cleone) Hemingway, Taopi; two daughters, RoeAnn (Randy) Voigt, Taopi, Renee Hemingway, Fairmont, Minn.; four stepdaughters, Jody Swank, Clarinda, Iowa, Lori (Dave) Olsen, Canon City, Colo., Mary (Dale) Svoboda, Austin, Theresa (Jerry) Hanson, Adams, Minn.; three stepsons, Jerry Swank, Jr., Alma, Ark., Donny (Dee) Swank, North Mankato, Minn., Michael Swank, Dodge Center, Minn.; 30 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Weeks, Bloomington, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Carol; one son, Ryan; one brother, James; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 4 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2009 at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home in Hayfield. There will be a private family interment service at Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield.

Mabel Adelaide Kittelson, 93, of Austin died Wednesday morning, Oct. 28, 2009 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in Austin.

She was born Oct. 22, 1916 to John and Gertrude (Johnson) Shaw in Adams, Minn. where she grew up and attended school. After graduation from Adams High School in 1934, Mabel completed business school before going to work for First National Bank in Austin as a bank teller for 10 years.

She married Edward Kittelson on Jan. 12, 1944 at Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams.

They made their home in Austin where they were members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Mabel volunteered in the Craft Room at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing, making clothes for her children.

Survivors include her husband, Edward of Austin; two daughters, Marie (Douglas) Clarke of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada and Helen Stoltenburg of Cottage Grove; one son, Dean Kittelson of Spring Valley; five grandchildren, Andrew (Allison) Clarke, Allison Clarke, Jeff (Julie) Stoltenburg, Jill (Charlie) Appel and Laura (Joseph) Schmidt; two great-grandchildren, Jack Stoltenburg and Madeline Appel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gertrude and John Shaw; one sister; one brother; a grandson, Eric Stoltenburg and a son-in-law, John Stoltenburg.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Ron Barnett officiating. Visitation is at the church one hour prior to the service. Harold Jack (Bob) Gilbert, 80, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009 at Austin Medical Center in Austin.

He was born Dec. 30, 1928 in Buffalo Center, Iowa to Harvey and Bertha (Olson) Gilbert. Harold graduated from high school in Buffalo Center. He served in both the US Army and Navy and was married to Lorraine Boettcher on Sept. 25, 1951 in Elmore, Minn. Bob was employed by the Hormel Foods Corporation in management at both the Austin and Knoxville, Iowa plants, specializing in Dry Sausage production.

He was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church and the American Legion. Bob was a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels Program and a member of a local bowling league. He also enjoyed fishing.

Harold is survived by his wife, Lorraine Gilbert, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Susan Gilbert, Santa Clarita, Calif.; daughter, Connie Gilbert, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; grandson and wife, Robert J. and Elena Gilbert; great-grandchildren, Lydia, Santino and Marianna Gilbert; brothers, Dean Gilbert, Crossville, Tenn., Larry Gilbert, Stewartville, Minn.; sisters: Virginia Althoff, Buffalo Center, Iowa, Delores Griffon, Buffalo Center, Iowa, Mary Lou John, Spirit Lake, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.

James K. R. Lund, Sr., 70, of Austin died Wednesday, October 21, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. He died peacefully surrounded by his loving family in his home.

He was born April 15, 1939, in Austin, the son of Henry K. and Alma P. (Cooper) Lund. He attended school in Austin, graduating from Austin High School in 1957. He joined the United States Navy and traveled to many destinations while serving his country. After his discharge, Jim returned to Austin where he worked at Hormel Foods Corporation from June 16, 1967 until Aug. 20, 2000. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

He loved spending time with his family, especially during the holidays and summer time cookouts. Jim enjoyed traveling to Colorado, Las Vegas and Atlantic City. He also enjoyed fishing and watching football.

Survivors include his special friend, Carol King of Austin; children, Dena (David) Simpson of Philadelphia, Pa., James (Christy) Lund, Jr. of Austin, and Stacie (Mark) Kalvoda of West Fargo, N.D.; six grandchildren, Marissa, James and Nicole Lund and Matthew, Amber and Janelle Kalvoda; other special friends include, Keith, Kyle and Kelden King and their families; brothers and sisters, ElVeda Lund of Centennial, Colo., Ivan (Denni) Lund of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Jeanne Burke and Gary (Blythe) Lund all of Littleton, Colo.; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He will be missed dearly by his family and all who loved him and his spirit will live on.

Eloise Kriehn, age 87, and formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, passed away October 18, 2009 in Pine River, Minnesota.

She was born on February 14, 1922 in Wausau, Wisconsin, to Erwin and Mildred Fryatt.

Eloise is survived by her children, Eugene Kriehn, Marlene Rycks (Elso), Harlin Kriehn (Judy), and Karen Myers; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Victor; daughter, Lois; granddaughter, Vicki; and son-in-law, Richard.

Rosemary Paulson, 82, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009. Rosemary was a 25-year employee at Hormel and retired in April of 1992.

She is survived by her children, David Ardin, Linda and Doug Douglas, Kathleen and Steve Colberg, Aimee and Howard Hagan; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sister Drucilla Anderson; brother Roger Challberg; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Delano, Minnesota. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services in the church on Tuesday.

Harry Aloysius Mentel, 90, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Monday, October 19, 2009 at the Adams Healthcare Center.

Harry was born on December 17, 1918 in Rose Creek, Minnesota, the first child of Fred and Mary (Majerus) Mentel. He graduated from Austin High School in 1938 and joined the George A. Hormel Company in 1942. During World War II he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed for 14 months at Pearl Harbor.

On November 25, 1948 he married Stella M. Dolgner of Owatonna, Minn. They lived on a farm one mile east of the Austin airport for most of their 60 years of marriage and raised two daughters.

After receiving his Master's license in electricity from the State of Minnesota, Harry was a private electrical contractor in the Austin area, in addition to working as an electrician at the Hormel Company. He retired from the plant in 1982 at the age of 63 and from private contracting in 1999 at age 80.

Harry was a large contributor to Catholic charities and to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. His hobbies included mechanics, writing poetry, communing with nature, and reading to enhance his knowledge. He enjoyed talking about politics and religion, and wished to be remembered as "God-fearing and never reluctant to speak out."

Survivors include his wife Stella; daughters Stella (Tatsuroh) Yamazaki and Sherry Mentel; granddaughter Erika Yamazaki; and one sister Marcella Schwartz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Kathryn Grosland; and a brother, Clarence Mentel.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. There will be a 7 p.m. rosary on Monday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Military rites will be by American Legion Post #91 and V.F.W. Post #1216. Interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery in Meriden, Minn.’

Robert V. Cole, 85, of Burnsville passed away at his home on October 22, 2009.

He was a proud member of the USAF for 41 years. He retired as Master Sargent World War II Veteran, Korea and Vietnam. He served 24 years as Navy Chief Petty Officer and 17 years in the 133rd MN Air National Guard. He also served 20 years with the Austin [Minnesota] Fire Dept, and was a 60-year Member of the American Legion. He was a Lifetime Member of the Austin VFW # 1216.

Preceded in death by father Joseph, who was the youngest enlisted veteran of World War I at the age of 15; and mother, Florence Leona Cole.

He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (nee Merth); step-children, James (Patrice) Gilles, Janet (Bryan) Christensen and Joseph (Therese) Gilles; grandchildren, Amanda Christensen (Larry Mondor), Jeremy Christensen, Jennifer (Brent) Theis and Anne (Dan) Markus; great-grandchildren, Brianna and Brandon Mondor, Robert and Madison Christensen and Rachel Theis; and cousin, Sharon Garofalo.

Elizabeth Compardo, age 74, a resident of Davie, Florida, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at home on October 6, 2009 after a long battle with cancer.

Born Elizabeth Eisterhold on October 12, 1934, in Meyer, Iowa, Elizabeth moved to the Austin area in 1948 and graduated in 1952 from Austin High School. A long time resident of Huntington Beach, California, Davie, Florida became Elizabeth’s retirement home.

Elizabeth embraced life and was an active parishioner at St. David Catholic Church in Davie and an enthusiastic volunteer. She was named Davie Volunteer of the Year in 2001.

Elizabeth is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Rodney Dofort; adoring grandchildren, Christopher and Brieanne Dofort, all of Davie, Fla.; her sisters, Marian Elton of Bloomington, Minn., Dorothy Dempsey of Citrus Heights, Calif., Sue Witter, Rochester, Minn. and Linda Eisterhold, Oronoco, Minn.; and her brother, John Eisterhold of Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Florentina Eisterhold; and a niece, Kimberly (Elton) Swanson.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Austin, with interment in Calvary Cemetery, Austin.

Hold Rites Saturday

LeRoy, Minnesota — Funeral services for Mrs. Edward Maage, 67, were to be held Saturday at 2 p. m. at the LeRoy Lutheran church, the Rev. R. M. Christensen officiating.

The body was taken to Thor, Iowa, where services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Lutheran church. Burial will be at Thor.

Mrs. Maage was born in Humboldt county, Iowa, September 18, 1878, and came here about 20 years ago.

Surviving are her husband; daughter, Mrs. L. Offeen; and a son, Theodore, of LeRoy; and several grandchildren.

She had been an invalid for several years.

Former Lyle Resident Dies in Minneapolis

LYLE, MINNESOTA — Funeral services for Carl M. Anderson, 83, were held in the Mission Church here Saturday. The Rev. Wilbur Junker officiated and burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mona. Mr. Anderson, who had been in poor health, died in his sleep Wednesday at his home in Minneapolis.

He was a painter and interior decorator and had lived in Lyle many years before moving to Minneapolis in 1939.

Mrs. Eliza Peachey Early Pioneer, Dies

A resident of Mower county for over 70 years, Mrs. Eliza Peachey, 95, died Friday morning at the Sherman Rest Home. Funeral services were held on Sunday with burial in the London Cemetery.

Mrs. Peachey was born in Waupun, Wisconsin, on December 11, 1857 and came to southern Minnesota with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James March in her early 20's. In 1875 she was married to Charles Peachey and they lived on a farm three miles northeast of London.**

Mr. Peachey died in 1938. Three years ago Mrs. Peachey moved to Lyle. Surviving her are one sister, Mrs. Edith Michie, Minneapolis, and eight nephews and nieces. Her nephew B.J. Robertson, Minneapolis, was named administrator of the estate.

CHARLES CITY, IOWA -- Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Grossmann Funeral Home for Ralph H. Peters, 73, Austin, Minnesota, former Floyd farmer, who died Sunday in a hospital at Austin, where he had been a patient for five days. The Rev. Walter Fritschel, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, will officiate, and burial will be in the Floyd Cemetery.

Mr. Peters was born October 31, 1879 in Germany, son of Heye and Hilda Ross Peters. The family came to the United States in 1888, living in Illinois. Mr. Peters farmed near Peoria, Illinois and Floyd, retiring 20 years ago.

He was married to Tillie Obermeier in 1907.

Survivors include his wife and one son, Henry Charles, Austin, Minnesota, four sisters, three brothers, and one grandchild.

Dorothy Stephenson, 82, of Dexter, Minnesota, died Friday morning , October 23, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

She was born June 14, 1927 in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, the daughter of Even and Olga (Kyseth) Evenson. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. She received her education in Austin, graduating from Austin High School in 1945. She married Franklin Stephenson on Sept. 25, 1946 in Minneapolis. She lived in Dexter until 1978 when she moved to California, returning to Dexter in 2005.

She was an active member of the community, having served as leader of the Commercial Club, a member of the Eastern Star, American Legion and St. John’s Lutheran Church of Elkton and as a Cub Scout den mother. She liked to play cards, bowl, golf and swim. She enjoyed many activities when healthy as well as caring for her mother. She loved to spend time with her family.

Franklin died on Jan. 23, 2000.

She is survived by three children, Richard Stephenson of Denver, Colo., LeAnn (Bill) Howe and Randy (Barbara) Stephenson, all of Dexter; ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Rosa Evenson of Michigan and Camilla Farnsworth of Austin; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Franklin; a son, Roger, in 1998; four brothers, Melvin, Donald (Binky), Pearly and Barney; and three sisters, Evelyn, Lorraine and Elaine; and daughter-in-law, Joan Stephenson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Elkton with the Rev. Liz Erickson officiating. Interment will follow the service in Dexter Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009 at the Worlein Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Carlyle “Bill” Thomas, 79, of Charles City, died Sunday, October 25, 2009, at his home in Charles City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag and Pastor David Werges will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City. There will be a flag presentation and taps by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Carlyle Edmer Thomas was born September 11, 1930, at Austin, Minn., the son of Claire “Dewey” and Laura (Dall) Morris. He graduated from high school in Austin, Minn. Bill served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954, where he served on the USS Rockwell.

On December 1, 1956 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Belden at the Queen of Angels in Austin, Minn. He was employed at Oliver/White Farm until 1986. Bill was then employed at Lloyd Management in Dodge Center and Mankato, Minn. until he retired in 1999. He was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, life-time member of the V.F.W. in Austin, Minn. and the American Legion in Dodge Center, Minn. His interests included woodworking, building toys, fishing, pheasant hunting, crossword puzzles and polka dancing.

Living family members include his wife, Elizabeth Thomas of Charles City; six children, Carla (Dave) Bjork of Spirit Lake, Micheal Thomas of Freeport, Ill., Bill (Debra) Thomas of Nevada, Iowa, Tina (Kevin) Patterson of Charles City, Eric (Hong) Thomas of Chaingrai, Thailand and Laura (Jim) Janssen of Floyd; special sister-in-law, Judy Viers of Greene; 14 grandchildren, Antonia Turvold and special friend, Josh Parsons, Tiffany (Dustin) Nobel, Jodee (Andrew) Vickerman, Megan Patterson, Timothy (Stephanie) Thomas, Carlyle Thomas, Adam (Ashley) Thomas, Bobby Thomas, Cory Janssen, Andrew Janssen, Joseph Janssen, Alexis Thomas, Damien Thomas and Amanda Thomas; 11 great grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Krueger of Baldwin, Ga.

James David Maxfield, Jr., 74, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Season's Hospice in Rochester with his family by his side.

He was born on January 25, 1935 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to James and Freida (Timmerman) Maxfield. Jim attended Austin High School and served in the US Navy from 1952 through 1956.

He was married to Joanne Pike on August 24, 1957 at the First United Methodist Church in Austin. He was a lineman and had worked for Austin Utilities and retired from the Freeborn Mower Electric Cooperative.

Jim was a member of the Fellowship United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post 91 and a life member of the Blooming Prairie VFW. He was a member of Fidelity Lodge #39 AF & AM, Unity Chapter #29 OES, the Austin Shrine Club, the Oriental Band the Osman Shrine Temple.

He was a avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping and fishing. He liked working with stained glass and was a Minnesota Twins fan. In recent years he enjoyed spending winters in Texas.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson Michael Cochlin.

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA - Richard Dale Anderson, 79, of Austin died Saturday morning, October 24, 2009 at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 23, 1930, in Lansing Township, Minn., the son of Julius and Ella (Peterson) Anderson. His mother died when Richard was a child and he was raised by his step-mother, Florence. He was a confirmed in 1947 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin and continued to be a lifelong member. He received his education in District #30 Joint Country School (Taylor School) near Corning, Minn.

He entered the United States Army on Feb. 10, 1948, serving until his discharge on Feb. 10, 1952. During his service he was awarded a Bronze Star and three Battle Stars while serving in Korea for 13 months with the 11th Battalion field artillery. After his discharge from the Army, Richard joined the United States Air Force on July 22, 1952, serving in Japan and several bases in the United States until his retirement on Aug. 1, 1968.

Following his retirement, Richard worked as a security guard for Josten’s of Owatonna and later Wilson Foods in Albert Lea. On April 12, 1973, he was united in marriage to Doris (Eiler) Meland in Owatonna. She died on July 13, 1980. Since June of 2009, Richard has been a resident of the Prairie Manor Care Center in Blooming Prairie. He enjoyed shopping, collecting beer steins and hats. Richard was a member of VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91 both of Austin.

Survivors include five brothers and sisters, Jean (Elden) Huemann of Austin, Kenneth( Sharon) Anderson of Blooming Prairie, Karen (Delbert) Kinny of Austin, Dwayne (Carolyn Schutz) of Glenville and Russell (Linda) Anderson of Austin; one sister-in-law, Betty Anderson of Emmons; a very special friend, Jo Ross of Owatonna; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother; seven brothers, Julian, Orland, Irving, Donald, Nathan, Lyle and Reuben; and four sisters, Ora Morgan, Esther Lerum, Evelyn James and Lorraine Gullickson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009 at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kristi Koppel of St. Olaf Lutheran Church officiating. Military Honors will be provided by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91. Interment will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28 at the Worlein Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday. Memorials are preferred to the Donor’s choice.

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA -- Jean W. Turvold, 73, of Austin, Minn. died Monday (June 5, 1995) at the Austin Medical Center, Austin. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 301 First St. N.W., Austin. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Worlein Funeral Home, 1801 Fourth St. N.W., Austin, Minn. and one hour before services at the church.

Jean was born April 1, 1922 in Lake Mills, Iowa to James Neste and Hannah (nee) Ringestad Neste. She was raised in Albert Lea, and lived in Austin.

She married Leighton Turvold on April 27, 1939 in Northwood. She was a member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Austin. She taught Sunday school.

Survivors include her husband, Leighton Turvold of Austin, Minn.; two daughters and their husbands, Cynthia and Wayne Moretz of Bozeman, Mont., and Lana and Roger Epley of Austin, Minn.; five grandchildren, Belinda Leister and her husband, John of Bozeman, Mont., Rodd Moretz and his wife, Christy, of Fairbanks, Alaska, Sarah Epley, Todd Epley, and Anne Epley, all of Austin, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Amy Leister, Ben Leister, and Nicholas Leister, all of Bozeman, Mont.; one sister, Lillian Kaasa and her husband, Alerd, of Austin, Minn.; two brothers, Palmer Neste and his wife, Leota of Waseca, and Kenneth Neste and his wife, Dolly, of Waseca; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lenard Dean Clark, 74, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

He was born July 15, 1935 in Brownsdale, Mower county, Minnesota, to Martin and Bertha (Fleming) Clark.

A 1954 graduate of Austin High School, Lenard also graduated from the Vo-Tec Automotive School. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and was honorably discharged in 1958. On June 21, 1958 he married Lois Falck at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Austin. Lenard was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Austin where he was an usher and greeter for more than 30 years.

Lenard started work at Lars Standard and went on to be the owner and operator of Len's Standard for a number of years. He worked at the George A. Hormel Co. from 1967 to 1985. After leaving Hormel, he worked numerous jobs until he became a proud employee of the Mayo Healthcare system. He retired from Mayo at the age of 62.

Lenard was preceded in death by his parents; sister Beatrice Hull; brothers, Richard, Marvin and Martin; and one infant sister.

Lenard is survived by his wife, Lois Clark, Austin; daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne (Ron) Ripley, Austin, Gwen (Jeff) Maag, Tripp, S.D., Roxanne (Terry) Nelson, Austin; grandchildren, Adria (Raul) Vargas, Austin, Clinton Ripley (Anna Nybo), Austin, Meghan Grue (Nathan Andersen), Sioux Falls, S.D., Justin Maag, Sturgis, S.D., Joshua Maag, Little Rock, Ark.; great-grandchildren, Isaac, Gabriel, and Valerie Vargas; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward (Grace) Clark, Austin, Robert (Margaret) Clark, Austin, Verdell Clark, Austin; cousins; and many nieces and nephews.

CHARLES CITY, IOWA -- James Barber, 75, of Charles City, died Monday, June 12, 1995, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Robin Stoops officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Minnesota.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

James Halman Barber was born Sept. 2, 1919, at Gordonsville, Minnesota.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Barber of Charles City; a daughter, Lynda Bucknell of Thornton; two brothers, Lloyd Barber of Dodge Center, Minn., and David Barber of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; five sisters, Carol Oakland of Glenville, Minn.; Ethel Hoffman of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; Laura Raymon of Hollandale, Minn.; Shirley Giles of Albert Lea, Minn., and Mae Schneider of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; and three grandchildren.

Roy Everett Fickbohm, age 99, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Friday, October 30, 2009 at Austin Medical Center in Austin.

He was born on December 31, 1909 in to George and Inez (Shuck) Fickbohm in Union County, S.D. He attended the Prospect Hills country school in Union County, S.D. Roy was married to Gladys Numsen on March 23, 1933 in Alcester, S.D. In 1946 the Fickbohms moved from Akron, Iowa to the Austin area where Roy farmed until retiring in 1977. Gladys died in December of 1984. Roy was married to Edna Anfinson in 1988, and she died in 1994.

Roy had a great love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf. Roy was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and a strong supporter of the church. He also taught Sunday school and Bible classes as well as volunteering for various charitable organizations.

Roy is survived by his granddaughters, Denise and Marty Rennells, St. Ansgar, Iowa, Janine Bartlett, Blooming Prairie, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Kodian Anderson, Desahna Belden, Meghan Rennells, Damian Rennells, great-great-grandchildren, Ryan Drees, Rachael Drees; brother, Clarence Fickbohm, Haywarden, Iowa; sisters, Iva Seimers, Alcester, S.D., Violet Seimers, Alcester, S.D., Wilma Seimers, Sioux Falls, S.D., Opal Keiser, Haywarden, Iowa; daughter-in-law: Darlene Johnson, Lyle, Minn.; and nieces and nephews.

Roy was preceded in death by his wives, Gladys and Edna; son James Fickbohm; and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 at the Clasen-Jordan Chapel with the Reverend Dan Kahl officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery in Austin. David Delmont Bushman, age 63, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, October 30, 2009 at the Austin Medical Center.

David was born on Dec. 12, 1945, in Austin, to Ezra and Myra (Everett) Bushman. David attended special education school in Austin. He lived with his mother, until 1990 when he changed his residence to Breckenridge Care Home, owned and operated by Sharon and Joe DeClue. They so kindly and gently adopted him into their lives. David was so well cared for by Sharon and Joe along with their children and spouses, Michelle and Joe DeClue, Josh and ToniaDeClue, and Ruth and Corey Wittmer. He couldn’t have asked for a better family.

In addition to the DeClue family, David was cared for by others he considered his family, Tracy and Jodi Jeno, Nicole Hansen, Amy Alcala, Ron Newkirk, Katie Tang and Samantha Hegna. David was also carefully watched over by his social worker, Emily Bartley. He loved and enjoyed the time he lived with his special friends, housemates, and brothers, Joseph Curran, Kevin Brooks, and Paul Denisen. Each and every one of these special people gave their heart and soul to David. They are appreciated beyond words.

David started work at Oak Grove DAC in the early 1960’s. He transferred to Cedar Valley Services along with his manager in 1989. He was honored in 1999 for 20 years of service and retired in 2002.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian church for many years with his mother.

Survivors include his Breckenridge family; sister: CoraLee Emanuel (Bushman); nephews: Brad (LeAnn) Emanuel, Tony (Karen) Emanuel, Terry (Rhonda) Emanuel.; nieces: Melenee Emanuel, Julie Emanuel, Cathy (Tony) Leuer and many great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Daniel Emanuel, and Aunt Janice Everett.

A funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Monday, Nov. 2 at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Steve DeFor is officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery.

David Joseph Landherr, age 74, of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota, died October 29, 2009 at the Cross Home in Adams.

He was born on December 18, 1934 in Adams to Alios and Martha (Loecher) Landherr.

David was one of the first people to move into the Adams Group Home, living there for 27 years. In June, David moved to the Cross Home in Adams. David loved to be outside, watching the farmers, blowing bubbles, and watching the steam trains. David was really good at puzzles. He enjoyed getting a sucker as a treat. He also loved cats.

David is survived by his brother Roman Landherr, Taopi, Minn.; sisters and brother-in-law, Germaine Lepird, Estherville, Iowa, Rosemary (Roy) Shephard, Mankato, Minn.,Veronica Landherr, Bloomington, Minn., Theresa Holum, Wichita Falls, Kans.; nieces and nephews; aunt, Marie Dante, Austin, Minn.; and close friends, David, Rose Ann, Ray.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father James Seitz Officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Adams. Visitation will be at the Adams Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a 4 p.m. Rosary. Visitation will also be for one hour before the service at the church on Monday.

James Allen “Jim” Johnson, 82, of Austin, Minnesota, went home to the Lord Thursday evening, October 29, 2009 at Austin Medical Center surrounded by his family.

He was born May 10, 1927 to John S. and Alma (Gordon) Johnson in rural Lyle, Minn. After graduating from Austin High School in 1945, Jim served from August 1945 until 1947 in the Army where he was awarded the Victory Medal for Army Occupation of Germany. After an honorable discharge, he went to work for Geo. A. Hormel & Company and on May 15, 1948, married Avis LaVonne Leidall at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. To this union three children were born. A member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, VFW, American Legion and the Elks and Moose Lodge, Jim enjoyed sports and using the computer. He retired from Hormel on July 15, 1986 after 42 and 1/2 years. Jim and Avis moved to Scottsdale, Ariz. where he was a lifetime member of the DAV. They returned to Austin in 2006.

Survivors include his wife, Avis LaVonne; a daughter, Cindy Jensen of Austin; two sons, Greg Johnson (Paris Magee) of Minneapolis and Scott (Julie) Johnson of Austin; seven grandchildren, Michelle Jensen, Melissa Reimers, Matthew Johnson, Natalie Johnson, Haley Johnson, Hannah Johnson and Terri Wolfe; three great-grandchildren, C.J. Nord, Kendra Reimers, Karissa Reimers and one expected in January; sister, Lola Erickson of Austin; half brother, Norman (Ina) Gordon of Ukiah, Calif.; brother-in-law, Victor Bruce of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alma and John Johnson; three sisters; one brother; four half brothers; two half sisters and a son-in-law, Kenwood Jensen.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Ron Barnett officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Worlein Funeral Home and at the church an hour prior to the service. Interment is at Six Mile Grove Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lyle with military rites by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91. Memorials are preferred to St. Olaf Lutheran Church Building Fund.

DEATHS

Mrs. Susan Hormel

Mrs. Susan, widow of John G. Hormel, died on Saturday morning, August 20, 1910, at her home on south St. Paul street of heart trouble, aged 73 years. She was seriously ill for less than a week as she attended church the previous Sunday.

Susan Decker was born in Neuwald, Germany, November 15, 1836, and at the age of 15 came with her parents to Buffalo, New York. She was married there on January 1, 1855 to John George Hormel. Ten years later they moved to Toledo, Ohio, where they lived for thirty years. They moved to Austin 15 years ago and Mr. Hormel died here in May, 1896.

Mrs. Hormel has since resided here where most of her children reside. She was a woman of fine mind and temperament. She was devoted to her home and family and her influence for good was powerful.

Those who knew her best found a stimulus to better thought and better life. She was beloved in the home circle where she labored untiringly for those whom God had entrusted to her care and she earned a well deserved reward in the devotion of her children.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. J.P. Davis and Rev. F.E. Knopf, were held at the residence of George A. Hormel on Monday afternoon. Interment in Oakwood.

Deceased was the mother of twelve children of whom nine survive -- George A., Herman G., John G., Benjamin F., and Elizabeth Hormel and Mrs. L.P. Fisher of Austin; Rev. W. Henry Hormel of Ottumwa, Iowa, Mrs. F.E. Wells of Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. A.M. Stewart of North Yakima, Washington.

Harlan Duane Rech, 77, of Merrillville, Indiana, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009.

Harlan was born March 29, 1932 in Austin to Leo Phillip and Adeline (Boudreau) Rech. He graduated from St. Augustine’s High School in Austin in 1950.

He was a supervisor for the Ford Motor Company Plant in Chicago Heights, Ill. and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Harlan had been an active member in the St. Peter the Fisherman Church in Mountain Home, Ark. where he enjoyed serving as an usher. Harlan also maintained a membership at St. Andrew’s Church in Merriville, Ind. He belonged to Polish Club, Foresters and Parkinson’s Support. He was also an outdoor enthusiast with a passion for fishing.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who was deeply committed to his family and faith. He had a very quick wit that kept everyone he loved smiling, even in his passing. He was a dedicated husband to his wife Mary (Mayer) for more than 51 years.

Harlan Duane is survived by his five children: Richard Rech, Kenneth (Debra) Rech, Julie (John) Alessia and Jeannette (Scott) Albert; nine grandchildren: Jeromy, Ryan, Joshua, Kayla and Jessica Rech, Sarah and Andrew Albert, and Gabby and John Alessia; and one sister, Phyllis Freund.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his stepmother, Viola Kloeckner.

Services were held in Indiana.

Edward T. Crowe, 70, of Austin, died at his home on Saturday, October 31, 2009.

He was born Aug. 23, 1939 to Martin and Loretta (Fuerhelm) Crowe in Austin, Minnesota. He married Barbara Ann Nehls on Aug. 18, 1973 in Osage, Iowa. They made their home in Austin where they raised two children. Edward worked in maintenance at St. Augustine Catholic Church. From July 7, 1969 until April 30, 2004 he was a maintenance and relief man for the sewage treatment center in Austin. A family-loving man, Edward will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Austin; two daughters, Connie Loesch of Rochester and Jean Adams of Fairmont; three grandchildren, Michael (Michelle) Farrell, Ashley Adams and Joshua Farrell; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Monica Severson, Marie Weis, Kathleen Erickson; two brothers, Bernie Crowe, Larry (Joyce) Crowe, all of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Joanne and Rose Rita; one brother, Marty; three brothers-in-law, Butch Weis, Fran Severson and John Erickson.

There will be no services. The inurnment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery at a later date.

Nancy Jean Bentzin, 56, of Cannon Falls, died Sunday morning, Nov. 1, 2009 at her home surrounded by family.

Nancy was born in Austin on Nov. 20, 1952, the daughter of Gerald and Deloris (Kneeland) Raschke.

Nancy has resided in Cannon Falls since 1996. She worked as head of the dietary department at the Cannon Falls Medical Center for 12 years. She was an animal lover and avid gardener. Nancy enjoyed making stained glass, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren. She is very loved and will be greatly missed!

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Deloris Raschke; husband, Dennis Bentzin; and brother, Michael Raschke.

She is survived by her son, Dennis Bentzin; her daughters, Dena Erickson, Dacia, Donia and Shannon Bentzin, and Paula Morton; eight grandchildren, Tyler, Mackenzie, Jace, A’Janae, Jaiyana, Jeriun, Liana, and Jadrien; and her dog, Pikachu.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls.
