MRS. LEWIS SOLA

(died 1955)

Mrs. Lewis Sola, 93, Minneapolis, Minnesota, died suddenly Saturday morning at Methodist Hospital, Rochester. She was a former resident of the Lyle community.

Surviving are her husband; four sisters: Mrs. Mabel Tieman, Ishpeming, Mich., Mrs. Helga Larson and Mrs. Rudolph Carlson, Austin, and Mrs. Bessie Duenow, Lyle; and a brother, Lloyd Berg, Lyle.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday.

Mads Jensen Hansen

1863-1955

Mads Jensen Hansen was born in North Sleivig, Denmark, on July 14, 1863, to Mette Fabrain and Hans Jensen Hansen.

In 1884, he came to the United States and to Blooming Prairie. He was united in marriage to Anna Dorthea Hansen in Beaver City, Nebraska, in 1892. To this union six children were born.

After a short time in Nebraska, he returned to Owatonna where he lived until coming to Austin about 1917 making his home here ever since. Mr. Hansen was a retired Hormel employe.

He passed away at 2 p. m. Jan. 5 at his home, 305 W. Winona.

He was preceded in death by his wife and two daughters, Annette and Minnie, and leaves to mourn his passing, two daughters and two sons. Mrs. Manley (Lena) Howe, Emily, Minn.: Mrs. F. A. (Emma) DeFor, Austin; Warner Hansen, Lansing; and Arnold of Austin; also 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, several nieces, two nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 8, 1955, at 2 p. m. at the Jordan Chapel, the Rev. David Helgen officiating. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery.

Anna Elizabeth (nee Grunewald) Baker

1856-1954

Anna Elizabeth Grunewald Baker was born Nov. 25, 1886, at Lacon, Illinois, the daughter of John and and Minnie Grunewald.

She moved with her parents to Britt, Iowa, in 1902, and to Austin in 1924. For the past three years, she made her home in Winona. She attended the Lacon Public School and on Feb. 4, 1906, was united in marriage with Charles E. Baker at Britt.

Mrs. Baker died at 8:30 p.m, Dec. 31 at her home after suffering a stroke. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 2, at the Mayer Funeral Home, Austin, the Rev. Delmont Gordy officiating. Interment was in Enterprise Cemetery.

Mrs. Baker is survived by her husband, Charles E. Baker, Winona; and five children, Mrs. Willis Butts (Minnie), Austin; Mrs. Charles Hovda (Ann), Austin; Edward Baker, Lansing; August Baker, j Charles City, Iowa; Mrs. John McCullough (Blanche), Winona. Two brothers preceded her in death.

Chester Glenn Rawlings

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA -- The funeral for Chester Glenn Rawlings will be private. Mr. Rawlings, 89, of Austin, died Sunday afternoon, March 24, 2002, at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield.

He was born March 23, 1913, in Griswold, Iowa. Mr. Rawlings was a mechanic and welder.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; a son, Richard of East Wenatchee, Wash.; and longtime friend, Edna (Douglas) Roll of St. Ansgar, Iowa; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Glenna and Sherry, both of California.

Worlein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Burial: St. Peter Cemetery, Toeterville, Mitchell County, Iowa

Frances Caroline
(nee Blumenrader) Rawlings

1907-2006

Birth: Jul. 29, 1907
Death: Mar. 17, 2006

Frances Caroline Rawlings, age 98, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Friday, March 17, 2006, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

Frances was born July 29, 1907, to Charles and Minnie (Brandt) Blumenrader in Lyle, Minn. She grew up in the Lyle area and graduated from St Ansgar High School in 1929. She married Chester Rawlings in Boise, Idaho on April 14, 1944.

Together they worked at the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash. Frances and Chester owned a trailer court in Florida. Most recently they made their home in Austin. Chester died on March 24, 2002. Frances enjoyed bingo, camping and spending time with friends, and she loved sports.

Survivors include son, Richard Rawlings, East Wenatchee, Wash.; daughter, Sue Bowers, San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Chester in 2002.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 22, 2006, from 1-1:30 p.m. at Worlein Funeral Home. Interment will be at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Toeterville, Iowa. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of arrangements.

Burial: St. Peter Cemetery, Toeterville, Mitchell County, Iowa.

Kenneth LaVerne Freeman

1936-1953

Kenneth LaVerne Freeman, son of C. Irving and Eva Freeman, was born August 22, 1936, in Clayton Township. Mower County, Minn. His baptism into the Christian faith took place at Dassel, Minnesota in October of the isame year.

Not long after his birth, the family moved to California, where they remained for a year, moving back again to Mower County, where they have since resided.

In 1941. Kenneth became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Dexter Township, and on July 3, 1949. he was confirmed and became a communicant member of Trinity. He was an active member of the congregation at the time of his death

Kenneth attended the Elkton Public School for all eight years of his elementary education. He bad completed three years of high school at Elkton, from which he would have been graduated in the spring of 19S4. This year, Kenneth was to have been president of the Student Council. an organization of which ht had been an elected member all the three years of high school. During his school years he acquired great skill in athletics, starring in basketball, always playing to win in a sportsman like way.

He was a fine, sincere, conscientious student and by his Christian character and gentlemanliness he endeared himself to all who knew him. His life was centered around the words of his confirmation verse which reads, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all they waays acknowledge Him and He shall direct they paths." Proverbs 3, 5-6.

Kenneth Freeman was taken Saturday evening, September 12, in an automobile accident at the age of 17 years and 21 days. He was preceded in death by his 23 month old brother, Merle.

He is survived by his parents, Irving and Eva Freeman; his sister, Donna May; also many relatives, neighbors, friends and schoolmates.

Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Dexter Township, on September 18 at 2:00 P.M.. Burial was at the Brownsdale Greenwood Cemetery. Reverend N. E. Sauer officiating at the service.

Pallbearers and honary pallbearers were three of his teachers, his classmates and members of the A and B Basketball squads. Pallbears were; Frank Grundmeier, Ronald Mathews, Ronald Muller, Kenneth Schwartz. Stanley Morrow, Warren Mead.

Lorraine (nee Potter) Groos

1919-2009

Lorraine Groos, age 89, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, went to her heavenly home on August 17, 2009.

She was born on August 21, 1919 in Gowrie, Iowa the youngest of six children born to Irene (Morlan) and Roy Potter. The family moved to Austin, Minnesota, in 1922. She graduated from Austin High School in 1936. On November 28, 1939, she was united in marriage to Wilbur (Wib) Groos in Austin. Their oldest son Jim was born in Rochester. In 1946, after Wilbur’s service time in World War II, they moved to Albert Lea, where John and Jody were born.

Lorraine was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years where she taught Sunday school and Bible school, served as a visiting deacon and was active in her circle and Presbyterian Women. She also volunteered at Good Samaritan. She had made her home at Thorne Crest Retirement Center for the past few years where she volunteered. She cherished her many friendships there.

Lorraine truly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her happiest times were spent with them. Lorraine loved to dance, play bridge and followed sports especially the Minnesota Gophers, Vikings and Twins. Her family, faith, community and patriotism were all important aspects of her life.

Lorraine will be lovingly missed by her family: two sons James (JoAnne) Groos, St. Charles, Mo., John (Jane) Groos, Sioux Falls, S.D.; daughter, Jody (Brian) Graves, Waukesha, Wis.; grandchildren, Dan Groos (Tina Oliver) and her son, Brandon, St. Charles, Mo., Julie (Chris) VanTassel and their son, Makaio, Dallas, Texas, Brent (Heather) Groos and their sons, Gavin and Griffin, Sioux Falls, S.D., Brian (Suzi) Groos and their children Kyrsten, Talyn and Bradyn, Aurora, Colo., Andrew, John, Natalie and Eva Graves all of Waukesha, Wis. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother and four sisters.

The memorial service for Lorraine Groos, of Albert Lea will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church in Albert Lea. Visitation is at 1 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Bonnerup Funeral Service is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials can be directed to the First Presbyterian Church.

Dorothy Dean (nee Allen) Espe

1922-2009

Dorothy Dean Espe, age 86, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on August 20, 2009 at the Austin Medical Center.

Dorothy was born on November 21, 1922 in Clear Lake, South Dakota, the oldest of four children born to Howard and Eva Allen. On November 21, 1942 she was united in marriage to Raymond N. Espe.

Dorothy was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Women of the Moose where she received her academy of friendship. Dorothy truly loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her happiest times were spent with them. Her family, faith and friends were all important aspects in her life. Dorothy was a homemaker. She liked to garden and bake -- her homemade bread was the best.

Dorothy will be missed by her family, daughters, LaDonna (Alan) Sisler, Owatonna, Rose (David) Ring, Austin, Bonnie (Greg) Gerber, Austin, Sandra (Larry) Krupicka, Austin; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Russell (Rose) Allen, Austin; special friend, Marion Zimmerman, Austin; special sister-in-law, Janet Espe, Austin.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Espe; parents, Howard and Eva Allen; sisters, Helen Majewski and Geraldine Noble.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. Andrew Lindahl officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.

The casket bearers will be Kevin Sisler, Tim Gerber, Zach Krupicka, Todd Krupicka, Dan Ring and Richard Peterson.

Winnie E. (nee Kolb) Swank

1935-2009

Winnie E. Swank, 74, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on August 20, 2009 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota.

Winnie was born April 17, 1935 in Austin to Ted and Marvel (Potter) Kolb, the oldest of six children. She lived in Austin her entire life, graduating from St. Augustine High School (Pacelli) in 1953. On November 26, 1955 she was united in marriage to Ronald Swank at Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Winnie worked as a bookkeeper at Kinsman's Floral and Johnson Floral, which became the family flower expert to go to. She also worked as a secretary for the United Way and for an insurance agent in Austin. Winnie enjoyed friendships over the years from competing in a bowling league, card club and Monday night women's golf league. She and husband Ron were avid Twins fans, watching many games together.

Winnie dearly loved the times spent in Plymouth, Minn. and Springfield, Ore. to be with their children and grandchildren. Win and Ron enjoyed a few years of garage hunting for antiques and participating in local craft shows. She also crocheted many blankets as gifts and for display at the local fair.

Survivors include a son, Brad (Evelyn) Swank, Springfield, Oregon; daughter, Renae (Jeff) Aspenson, Plymouth, Minnesota; grandsons, Austin Swank and Dan Aspenson; granddaughter, Ashley Swank; brothers, Randy Kolb, St. Cloud, Minnesota, Dick (Patty) Kolb, New Hope, Minnesota; sister, Mary Stahl, Boulder, Colorado; mother-in-law, Helen Swank, Austin and many other relatives.

She is preceded in death by her father, Ted Kolb; mother, Marvel Kolb; brothers, Ron and Tom Kolb; and most recently by her husband, Ronald Swank on July 22, 2009.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday, August 24, at 1:15 p.m. Memorials are preferred to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements by Mayer Funeral Home.

The casket bearers will be Jeff Aspenson, Dan Aspenson, Randy Kolb, Dick Kolb, Andy Stahl and Andrew Hagan.

Wilbert John Spieker

1933-2009

Wilbert John Spieker 76, of Castle Rock, Colorado, passed away peacefully after a long illness Saturday August 15, 2009 at his home with his family by his side.

Wilbert “Willie” was born to John and Sena (Kruse) Spieker on March 18, 1933 in Rushmore, Minnesota.

After graduating from Worthington, Minn., he served in the United States Army in Germany. He then moved to Austin. Willie married Beverly Elaine Baird on August 9, 1957 at the Little Brown Church in Iowa. Willie attended Austin Vocational School where he received a degree in electronics. Upon graduation he was employed by Weyerhauser in Austin for 34 years.

Willie loved to camp, fish, bowl, vacationing with his family and friends and collect coins. He was a member of Presbyterian Church of Austin where he served as a deacon and elder. He was member of New Hope Presbyterian Church in Castle Rock.

Willie is survived by his wife, Beverly, of 52 years; his son, Craig (Caralee), Castle Rock, Colo.; granddaughters, Ashley and Alyssa; daughter, Debra, Castle Rock, Colo.; sisters: Francis Moret, Sylvia Baddgor, Sena (Harlan) Berkness, Viola (Duane) Weerts; brothers, Raymond Spieker, John (Elaine) Spieker; sister-in-law: Margaret Spieker; brother and sister-in-laws: Kenneth and Maxine Meyer, Donald and Elaine Baird; many nieces and nephews and many, many dear friends. He was proceeded in death by his parents; sister, Patsy Galema; and brother,a George Spieker.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church Austin, Minn. with the Rev. Andrew Lindahl. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.

Margaret Ruth (nee Rossow) Heuton

1917-2009

Margaret Ruth Heuton, age 92, passed way peacefully Aug. 20, 2009.

Margaret was born May 2, 1917 to Frank and Anna (Laack) Rossow in Udolpho Township, Mower County. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church of Waltham, Minn., attended the LeBarr county school and then graduated from Austin High School in 1934. After completing teacher’s training school in 1935, she began teaching at a country school near Grand Meadow, Minn. She then taught at the same country school she attended as a young girl.

Margaret married Russell Heuton on June 5, 1938 at Trinity Lutheran Church of Waltham. They became very active members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin. Besides raising her four boys and volunteering at church, Margaret also worked as the cook at Shaw School from 1957 through 1975.

She is survived by two sons: Richard Heuton, Austin, and Eugene (Lynne) Heuton, St. Paul; a daughter-in-law, Barb (Ronald) Heuton, of San Diego; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents: Frank and Anna Rossow, her brothers Walter and Harold Rossow, her husband Russell and two sons Norman and Ronald.

Funeral services will be held 11 am on Monday, Aug. 24, 2009 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Tom Ogilvie officiating. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday evening at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.

Robert Derr

1921-2009

Robert “Bob” Harold Derr, age 88, of Austin, died Aug. 21, 2009 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born February 4, 1921 to Jacob and Nellie (Hilke) Derr in Chester, Iowa, where he grew up and graduated from high school. Bob was in the Army during World War II, stationed for two years in Iran and two years in Europe. Very proud of serving his country, he was honorably discharged on November 3, 1945. After moving to Austin, he married Norma Jean Holzer on Nov. 30, 1946 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

As a young man, Robert was a mechanic and tire salesman. Later he maintained vehicles for the City of Austin street crews for 20 years. He continued selling tires for 40 years at Wold Tire Service in St. Ansgar. A tire salesman for sixty years, Robert was often referred to as “Honest Bob.” A member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church, the American Legion and VFW, Bob was devoted to his wife.

Family members, especially his grandchildren, were very important to Robert. He loved watching all sports on television, was an avid fisherman and loved to read. He loved all animals, especially his feline friend, Satchell, and liked to play cards.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Norma Jean, Austin; one daughter, Debra Jean Bure, Austin; sister, Thelma Kolstad of Chicago, Illinois; three grandchildren, Adrian (Pam) Wagner, Eagan, Kira Wagner, Minneapolis, Josie (Brenda) Bure, Rapid City, South Dakota; five great grandchildren, Kylie, Benjamin, Emily, Makayla and April.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2009 at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Father John Traufler officiating. Friends may call at the Worlein Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24 and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Austin. American Legion Post 91 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1216 are in charge of military rites.

Mada Fick

1890-1966

Mada Johanna Fick, daughter of Henry T. Fick and his wife, Sophia nee Schmidt, was born at Lake City, Minnesota on Feb. 26, 1890.

She received her schooling in Lake City. In 1933, the departed moved to Austin, Minnesota where she lived until her death.

Mada was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She remained a faithful follower of her Savior until death. She was a charter member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Austin.

Mada Fick enjoyed good health until about six months ago when illness set in. Though she had periods that gave hope of recovered strength. Her strength slipped from her steadily. The Lord called her home to himself in Heaven on Wednesday, May 18. She died at the University Hospital in Minneapolis.

She reached the age of 76 years, 3 months and 16 days.

She leaves to mourn her earthly passing, one brother, Henry of Austin, and other relatives and friends.

Arthur F. Anhorn

Died 1966

ANHORN -- Funeral services for Arthur F. Anhorn, 504 20th St. SW, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Rev. Arthur L. Swenson officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood cemetery.

Friends may call at Berg Funeral Chapel until 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and at the church one hour before the service. The family prefers memorials. Fidelity Lodge 39 AF and AM, will be in charge of Masonic services at 7:30 Tuesday.

Jack Waldo Mahoney

DEATHS

Jack Waldo Mahoney, 11 month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mahoney, LeRoy, died Friday at his home.

Surviving are his parents and three brothers, Donald, Larry and Richard.

Funeal services were held today at the Martz Funeral Home, LeRoy, the Rev. Robert Fogal officiating. Interment was in the LeRoy Cemetery.

Stanley C. Tindal

c1933-1954

Stanley C. Tindal, 21, died Friday evening at St. Olaf Hospital.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Tindal, Rt. 1, Austin.

Surviving are his parents; five brothers: Merlin, Samuel Jr., Bruce, Clifford and Gene, of Austin; a sister, Mrs. James Houff, Austin; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Tindal and Mrs. Christ Wiess, Austin.

Funeral services were held today at Queen of Angels Church. Interment was in the Catholic Cemetery. Rosary service was held Sunday evening at the Mayer Funeral Home.

Henry George Rieser

1875-1954

Henry George Rieser was born on February 18, 1875, at Rollingstone, Minnesota, the son of John and Pauline Blanchard Rieser.

Later the family moved to Pleasant Valley and when he was 10 years old, they moved to a farm near Dexter. He attended Monitor Rural School, near Dexter and resided in that community until he retired in 1938 and moved to his home in Austin, 201 S. Jay.

On May 9, 1906, he was united in marriage with Anna Sukow at Trinity Lutheran Church, Dexter. Mr. Rieser was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and served on the Monitor School Board, near Dexter, for 37 years.

Mr. Rieser died at 3 p.m. December 19, 1954 at St. Olaf Hospital after being ill for two days. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., December 22, 1954 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, with the Worlein Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Dale Allen Beckel

1937-2009

Dale Allen Beckel, 72, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on August 25, 2009 at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, Minnesota.

Dale was born June 10, 1937 in Milwaukee, Wis. to Walter and Laura (Bornfleth) Beckel. He graduated from Austin High School in 1955. After trade school he worked for Wagner Construction. Dale was also a co-founder of the Joseph Co. He was a carpenter.

On June 7, 1958 Dale married Geraldine Ann Halloran at St. Mary's Church in Chatfield. Dale continued to be active in the community through his work with Habitat for Humanity, Austin Hockey Association and his church. His participation at Queen of Angels consisted of laying its foundation, actively serving as a lector and participating on its boards and functions.

Survivors include his wife, Geri Beckel, Austin; children: Kathy (Doug) Hafften, Princeton, Robert (Jean) Beckel, Savage, Gregory (Gretchen) Beckel, Austin, Mark Beckel (Peggy Callahan), Hinckley, Kevin (Denise) Beckel, Savage, Kellie (Andrew) Roetter, Winona; grandchildren: David (Annie) Porttiin, Evan (Nikki) Porttiin, Jacob Beckel, Lisa Beckel, Joe Hafften, Shannon Beckel, Emily Beckel, Tori Beckel, Kayla Beckel, Megan Beckel, Erik Beckel, Ashley Roetter; great-grandchildren: Lilly, Kylie and Logan; and a brother, Robert (Lorraine) Beckel, Kellogg, Minn.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Laura Beckel; stepfather, Joe Beckel; and one grandchild.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, 2009 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper, Father Paul Nelson and Father Russ Scepanik officiating. There will be a 7 p.m. wake service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Kidney Foundation or the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester.

Dale Edward Enright

1925-2009

Dale Edward Enright, 83, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on August 27, 2009 at the Austin Medical Center in Austin.

He was born Sept. 25, 1925 in Rose Creek to Emmit and Molly (Schumacher) Enright.

Dale attended Austin High School until he was drafted in 1943, halfway through his senior year. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, Dale graduated from Austin Junior Community College. On Aug. 20, 1950, Dale married Louise Otto at Trinity Lutheran Church in Claire City, S.D. He worked at Hormel Foods until his retirement in 1985. Dale was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dale enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

Dale is survived by his wife Louise Enright, Austin; sons, Wayne (Judy) Enright, Austin, Robert (Sara) Enright, St. Michael, Minn.; daughter, Jean (Shawn) Gottsman, Bagley, Minn.; grandchildren, Chad Enright, Anna Enright, Jon Gottsman, David Gottsman; great grandson, Keegan Enright; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, 2009 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with the Reverend Thomas Ogilvie Officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin with Austin Post No. 91, American Legion and Olaf B. Damm Post No. 1216 Veterans of Foreign Wars in charge of Military Rites. James David Hulet

1940-2009

James David Hulet, age 68 of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Thursday morning, August 27, 2009 at Meadow Manor in Grand Meadow, Minnesota.

James was born Oct. 16, 1940 to John and Evadena (Boyenga) Hulet in Austin, where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1958. James worked for the DNR, Fish and Game Department in St. Paul and the railroad in Fridley, Minn. He married Patricia Hulet in Austin on Feb. 23, 1975. They made their home in Minneapolis where James worked for Park and Recreation Services until 1976 when they returned to Austin. Employed by Austin Park and Rec, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and music from the 1950s, especially rock ‘n’ roll.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Hulet, Austin; brothers, John Charles (Doris) Hulet, Austin, Philip (Nancy) Hulet, Rossville, Ga.; sisters, Marilyn (John) Zrucky, North Pole, Alaska, Blanche (Steven) Hollerud, Lyle, Minn.; several nieces and nephews; parents in-law, Lucille and Donald Ramlo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Evadena Hulet.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 31, 2009 at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Todd Portinga, associate in ministry, officiating. Jon Herman Benson

1942-2009

Jon Herman Benson, 67, of Austin, died Aug. 27, 2009 at his home in Austin.

He was born July 3, 1942 to Herman and Clara (Biladeau) Miller in Austin. He was adopted in Jan. 1948 by Clarence and Iva May Benson of Dunnell, Minn. Jon attended grade school in Dunnell and graduated from Sherburn High School. In 1960, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Cuban Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1963. On Oct. 12, 1963, he married Rena Carlson at Waverly Lutheran Church in rural Trimont, Minn.

Jon received an associate’s degree after attending Mankato Commercial Business College. He worked as a salesman for Elk River Concrete Products of Elk River. Jon worked for Municipal Castings in Madison, Minn. and was medically retired in 1998. In 2006, Jon and Rena moved from Madison to Austin. Jon was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting and collecting guns. He was quick-witted with a great sense of humor and enjoyed pulling pranks. Even in failing health, his quick wit and humor never failed him.

Jon is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rena Benson, Austin; one daughter, Julie (Robert) Lowery, Des Moines, Iowa; two sons, William Benson, Aurora, Colo., Glen (Karie) Benson, Cedar Falls, Iowa; two grandchildren, John Michael Benson and Samantha Ann Benson; one sister, Doris (Peter) Kent, Salina, Kans.; one brother, Duane (Janet) Miller, Faribault; one brother-in-law, Tim Timmerman, Austin; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his adopted parents and 11 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Truman. Interment will take place at Ridgelawn Memorial Park in rural Truman with military honors by the Martin County VFW Post 1222 and the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 of Fairmont. Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 4, 2009 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Zaharia Family Funeral & Cremation Service in Truman and one hour prior to services at the church. Ida (nee Selvig) Usken

1916-2009

Ida Usken, 92, of Colo, Iowa, and formerly of Rose Creek, Mower county, Minnesota, died August 29, 2009 at her daughter's and son-in-law's home in rural Colo where she had resided the past four years.

She was born Dec. 29, 1916, in Marshall County to Oscar and Borghild (Haugen) Selvig. She was and baptized and confirmed at the Elim Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. In 1934, Ida married George Usken at Elim Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Marshall County until moving to their farm in Rose Creek.

Survivors include four children: Berlyn (Bev) Usken, Las Vegas, Betty (Jim) Hartwig, Colo, Gary (Laurie) Usken, Fort Collins, Colo., Roxanne (Norman) Young, Hayfield; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Anderson and Herb Dickkut; four grandsons: Doug Hartwig, Grant Usken, Trevor Usken and Brett Young; granddaughter, Kimberly Young Jorgensen; two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Alex Jorgensen; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1978; grandsons Craig in 1979 and Eric Young in infancy; two sisters, Bernice Dickkut and Thelma Anderson; and two brothers, Lester and Milo Selvigand.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009 at the Elim Lutheran Church in Marshalltown with Pastor Karen Cluts officiating. Ida will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery. Dennis Lawrence O'Connor

1952-2009

Dennis Lawrence "Doc" O'Connor, 57, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly at his home on September 1, 2009.

Dennis was born June 29, 1952 in Austin to Lawrence and Viola (Harrington) O'Connor. He graduated from Austin High School in 1970. Dennis was active in the drum and bugle corps and band. He was in the Lancer's drum and bugle corps and the St. Paul Scouts. Dennis graduated from Bemidji State University with a B.S. degree in mass communications and business. His passions were gardening and music. He was a strong advocate for battered women and the homeless. For many years, Dennis promoted a variety of bands for Marsh Productions and later he owned Thumbs Up Productions.

Survivors include his mother, Viola, Austin; siblings, Joseph (Sharon), Duluth, Nancy (Joe) Rasmussen, Lakeville, Shawn (Brenda), Austin, Peggy (Jim) Cummings, Austin, Tamara, Austin, Timothy (Barb), Savage; 22 nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Lawrence, and his brother, Steven.

A visitation will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 at Mayer Funeral Home with a prayer service at 2:30 p.m. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Naida Belle (nee Smith) (Cockrum) Goergen

1923-2009

Naida Belle Smith Cockrum Goergen, 85, of Austin, died September 3, 2009 at Austin Medical Center.

She was born November 24, 1923 in Little Cedar, Iowa to Roy and Emily (Balsley) Smith. She graduated from high school in Little Cedar and was married to Oliver Cockrum on November 22, 1945. Naida was employed as a cook for the Austin Public Schools and was an active member of the Fellowship United Methodist Church. After Oliver's death, Naida was married to Herman Goergen on May 1, 1981.

Naida was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Twins, Timberwolves and all basketball on television. She also enjoyed visiting and talking with her friends on the phone.

Naida is survived by her children, Juanita (Ash) Hayes, San Marcos, Calif., Rod Cockrum, Lanesboro, Kelly (Cindy) Cockrum, Sinking Spring, Pa.; grandchildren, Emily Cockrum, Hailey Cockrum, Nathan Cockrum, Matthew Cockrum, all of Sinking Spring, Pa.; one sister, Beulah Cockrum, Osage, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Oliver Cockrum and Herman Goergen, and a son Ronald. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 at Fellowship United Methodist Church, 1811 Seventh Ave. SE, with the Reverend Dennis Tamke officiating. Interment will be in Osage Cemetery in Osage, Iowa at a later date. Friends may greet the family for one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the American Heart Association. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Nellie Ann (nee Grovdahl) Sween

1939-2002

Nellie Ann Sween, 62, of rural Racine, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002 at Rochester Methodist Hospital. She was born in rural Sargeant March 5, 1939, to George and Erma (Stayner) Grovdahl. She attended District 91 and Hayfield High School.

On March 5, 1960, she married Donald Sween. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed music and visiting at the Grand Meadow Nursing Home.

Survivors include her husband, Donald, Racine; son, Michael, Racine; her parents, George and Erma Grovdahl, Sargeant; brother, George (Doris) Grovdahl, Jr., Stewartville; sister, Janet (Don) Flatness, Glenville; brothers-in-law, Harold Sween, Grand Meadow; Sidney Sween, Rochester and special friend Helen Steinbring, Grand Meadow.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at the funeral home and at the church on Thursday for one hour before the service.

Adeline Florence Hulet, 85, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Thursday, February 21, 2002, at Methodist Hospital.

She was born in Austin on September 7, 1916 to Emil and Mathilda (Blom) Carlson. She graduated from Austin High School. On Jan. 6, 1939 she married Joshua Hulet. She worked at Hormel Foods until 1939 then was a homemaker. She was a member of the Comforcare Auxiliary and TOPS. She enjoyed writing letters and volunteering.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Ruth (Robert) Thomsen, Onalaska, Wis.; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen (Debra) Hulet, Austin; nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joshua; daughter, Joanne; six sisters and 2 brothers.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 26 and for one hour before the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Service: 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with Mr. Steven LaBelle officiating.

1917-2002

Orville T. Fingarson, 84, of St. Cloud died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002 at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St. Cloud.

He was born in Clearbrook, Minn. march 12, 1917 to Edward and Lena (Mohn) Fingarson. He graduated from Austin High School.

On Dec. 27, 1945 he married Margaret (Peg) Bergstrom. He worked at Hormel Foods Corporation and after he moved to St. Cloud he was a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital. He was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church and the American Legion, Sons of Norway and the Minnesota Wood Carvers Club.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Peg); children, Richard (Kathy) Fingarson, St. Cloud; Randal (Linda) Fingarson, Chanhassen' Brenda (Steven) Knowlton, Lakeville and Diane McAfee, Blaine; seven grandchildren, one great grandchild and brother, Harley Fingarson, Sarasota, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sisters.

Clarence Elmer Carter was born on August 13, 1892 to Joseph and Aluvia Ann Carter in Marion Co., Missouri. His family moved to a farm near Grand Meadow in 1917.

On February 18, 1920 he was united in marriage with Lenore H. Kelley and to this union four sons were born. After farming in this community for 12 years, they moved to Grand Meadow where they have lived the past 26 years.

He entered the Veteran's Hospital July 5 and passed away July 31.

Surviving are his wife, four sons, Joseph of Grand Meadow; Earl of Duluth; Roy of Pella, Iowa; and Paul of Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.; three sisters, two brothers and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday August 4, 1958 in the Grand Meadow Methodist Church with the Rev. Harold Clark officiating. Burial was in Frankford Cemetery with military honors.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 22, 1988, at United Methodist Church, Rudd, for Mrs. Lania K. McDowell, age 87, of Rudd, Iowa. She died on Tuesday, April 19, 1988 at the Nora Springs Care Center. The Pastor Sheridan Nallott officiated and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.

She was born on January 3, 1901, in Taopi, Minnesota, the daughter of Fred and Katherine (Brunce) Rothenburger.

She married Harold McDowell on April 30, 1921 in Austin, Minnesota. They lived and farmed near LeRoy, Minnesota, then later moved to the Osage and Lime Springs areas and farmed. In 1966 she moved to Rudd.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Dorcas Circle and Rudd Senior Citizens.

Her parents; her husband and one son preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ernie (Helen) Wood of Rudd; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Francis Daniel Guiney

1917-2009

Francis Daniel Guiney, 92, of Austin died on July 31, 2009 at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.

Born January 23, 1917 in Red Rock Township, he was the son of Edward and Sarah Ellen (Smith) Guiney. He attended Austin High School. Following graduation in 1935, he was employed at George A. Hormel Company and farmed with his father. He farmed his entire life on the family farm, which includes land homesteaded by his Irish grandparents in 1856.

During World War II he served in the United States Army for five years with Company A., 96th Quartermaster Bn. He was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines. After the war he returned to farming with his father and attended Government Agriculture classes. He married Aurelia Laudet on Oct. 15, 1956, at St. Augustine Church in Austin.

In 1971 he became the Mower County Bookmobile driver and clerk until his retirement in 1991. As a Charter Member of Queen of Angels Church in Austin, he actively participated in the building effort and served as usher for many years. He served on the Brownsdale Creamery Board, and devoted over 40 years to the Calvary Cemetery Board. He was also Clerk for the Red Rock Township Board for sixteen years. Proud of his full Irish heritage, he visited the birthplace of his Grandmother Tobin in Doone, Ireland, Limerick County in 1988.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Aurelia Guiney; children, Mary Frances Guiney, St. Paul, Daniel Guiney, Thailand, Dorothea (Steven Chin) Guiney, Minneapolis, Ellen (Richard) Copley, St. Louis Park, Joseph (Margaret) Guiney, Minneapolis, Maureen (Scott) Freberg, St. Paul, Timothy (Rosemary) Guiney, Two Harbors and Patrick (Danna) Guiney, Austin; grandchildren, Emily, Molly and Annie Guiney; Elias, Thomas, Tess and Clarise Freberg; Tobin and Tristan Chin; Aidan and Rowan Guiney; and Lexi, Landon and Layton Guiney.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Edward. He was a devoted and loving father and very proud of his family.

Visitation will be held Friday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Mayer Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Queen of Angels Church or Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL).

Pallbearers will be Daniel, Joseph, Timothy and Patrick Guiney, Steven Chin, Richard Copley and Scott Freberg.

Larry Dean Mikkelson

1946-2009

Larry Dean Mikkelson, 63, of Austin died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009 at his home in Austin.

He was born June 21, 1946 in Austin to Muriel and Lucy (Baglo) Mikkelson. Larry graduated from Austin High School and was self-employed doing garage door installation and roofing. He was married to Lois Fann Plotts on April 30, 1997 in Las Vegas. He was a member of the American Legion and the Eagles clubs.

Larry enjoyed spending time with family and friends. An avid outdoors man, he liked camping, tending the campfire, fishing and golfing. He also enjoyed trips to the casino and loved playing Texas Hold’em. His birthday being June 21, the traditional longest day and first day of summer, he would make his birthday last the entire month of June. He liked polka music and was especially fond of giving everyone as much “grief” as he could find.

Larry is survived by his former wife and caregiver, Lois Mikkelson, Austin; son, Larry B. Mikkelson, Austin; daughter, LaRinda Mikkelson, Purdy, Mo.; stepchildren, Barb and Aaron Hann, Austin, Sue and Joe Meineke, Austin, Mike and Missy Plotts, Bemidji, Minn.; a “boatload” (17) of grandchildren; mother, Lucy Allen, Austin; sister, Joyce and Wayne Heard, Austin; stepbrothers and sisters: Gary, Roger, Sandy, Marty, Sherry, Danny, Becky, Ron and Linda.

He was preceded in death by his father, Muriel Mikkelson; stepfather, Earl Allen; brothers, Don, Roger and Lyle Mikkelson; in-laws, Art and Serene Fann; friends, Sharyl Ann Nelson and Ken Brech.

A time of remembrance will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 at Austin Post 91 American Legion Clubrooms, 809 12th St. S.W., Austin. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Oakland/Trondhjem Lutheran Cemetery.
