Elmer Freitag 1905-2000
Elmer Freitag, age 95, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Tuesday,
Nov. 21, 2000 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.
He was born April 28, 1905, in Mantorville to Walter and Matilda (Rue)
Freitag. Elmer attended country school and helped on the family farm and
did some trapping. He married Fern Lewis Sept. 9, 1925 at Hayfield and moved
to Chicago where he worked in a steel mill. In 1929, they moved to Austin,
and Elmer went to work at Geo. A. Hormel & Co. where he was employed in
the hog kill for 41 years before retirement in 1970. Fern died in September
1978. A member of Crane Community Chapel, Elmer moved into St. Mark's
Lutheran Home Aug. 24, 2000.
Survivors include sons, Lloyd (Lorraine) Freitag and Darwin "Bob"
(Lorraine) Freitag; daughter, Marlus (Lester) Quam, all of Austin; 13
grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a great grandson, Duane Quam and
a daughter-in-law, Vivian Freitag.
Service: 2 p.m., Friday at Crane Community Chapel with Pastor Randy
Petersen officiating.
Visitation: One hour before the service at the church.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Anne Belle (nee Hokanson) List 1907-2009
Anne Belle List, 102, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on July
24, 2009 at Austin Medical Center in Austin.
She was born June 19, 1907 in Roseau County, Minnesota to Sven and Magdalena
(Martensdotter) Hokanson.
Anne graduated from high school at Warroad, Minnesota. She was married
to James E. List on April 26, 1926 in Austin. Anne was a homemaker and she
worked in retail sales at the Austin J.C. Penney store and Wallace's and
later was a clerical worker with the Mobile Oil Co.
She was a member of the Sterling Christian Church and the Order of
the Eastern Star. In 1999 she moved to the St. Marks Lutheran Home in
Austin. Among her fondest memories were the summers spent at the cabin
on Cedar Lake in the Faribault area, spending winter vacations in Tucson,
Ariz. and the annual fishing trips to Canada. At the age of 100, Anne took
her last fishing trip to Canada, traveling 300 miles into Canada with her
family. Anne enjoyed doing embroidery work and received many Champion and
First place ribbons at the Mower County fair over the years.
Anne is survived by her sons, James (Margaret) List, Austin, Dick (Joan)
List, Austin; daughter, Patricia (Westley) Botts, Tucson, Arizona; 15
grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.
A private family funeral service will be held at the Clasen-Jordan
Mortuary Chapel with the Reverend Pam Solberg Officiating. Interment
will be in Grandview Cemetery in Austin.

Donald Dean Boe 1927-2009
Donald Dean Boe, 81, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, peacefully
joined his Lord and Savior on July 24, 2009.
He and his twin sister Shirley were born, Aug. 31, 1927 in Clayton Township,
Mower County to Simon and Lizzie (Anderson) Boe. Don and Shirley were the
eleventh and twelfth of 13 children. He was always very proud to be a member
of a family of 13 children. He was a former member of the Marshall Lutheran
Church, rural Adams, where he was baptized and confirmed. The family lived
in Clayton Township most of his life. He graduated from the Adams High
School in 1945. He entered the Air Force in November of 1945 and was
honorably discharged in 1946.
Don married Bonnie Starry on Sept. 3, 1949 at the Little Brown Church
in Nashua, Iowa. To this union was born one daughter, Nancy (Boe) Vestal.
He was reactivated into the Air force in 1951 serving at Offutt Air Force
Base; Omaha, Neb., where he did auto body work. He was discharged a second
time in 1953. He return to Austin in July of 1953 where he worked at
Chinander's Auto Body until opening the Ace Auto Body and BO-DE Travel
Trailers businesses in 1963. Don was an active member of the Holy Cross
Lutheran Church in Austin since 1955.
Donald is survived by his wife, Bonnie L. Boe, Austin; daughter, Nancy
(Larry) Vestal, Rochester, Minn.; step granddaughters, Teresa (Mark)
Marquette, Rochester, Minn., Elizabeth (Darren) Hancock/Erwin, Davenport,
Iowa, Jennifer Rempt, Davenport, Iowa; great-grandchildren; brother, Harlan
(Maggie) Boe, LeRoy, Minn.; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Gladys Boe,
Adams, Minn., Martha Boe, Adams, Elaine Starry, St. Paul, Minn.; Charles
and Evelyn VanHouse, Austin; nieces, nephews, their families and special
four year old friend, Asia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Ervin,
Mildred Corcoran, Juletta Wigness, Helen Palmer, Hazel Hall, Nona Erie,
Jim, Vernon, Lois Reich, Shirley Harrington and Richard.
Funeral services will be held at 12 a.m., Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at the
Marshall Lutheran Church in Adams, Minn. with the Reverend Warren Schmidt
and the Reverend Shari Mason officiating. Interment will be in Marshall
Lutheran Cemetery in Adams with Adams Post # 146 American Legion in charge
of military rites. Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m.
Monday and for one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. In lieu
of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church
in Austin or the Marshall Lutheran Church, Adams.
Casket Bearers will be, Bill Boe, Mike Harrington, Dennis Starry, Donald
Starry, Keith Reich and Vance Erie.

Phyllis I. (nee Sanden) Hartle 1922-2000
Phyllis I. Hartle, 78, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Nov. 22,
2000, at her house.
She was born Nov. 21, 1922, in LaCrosse, Wis. to Edward and Gena (Vathing)
Sanden. She graduated from Houston High School (Houston, Minn.) in 1940.
After that she graduated from Winona Teachers College and went on to teach
throughout southern Minnesota to include Houge Ridge, Farmington, Canton,
and St. Croix Falls.
She moved to Austin in 1950 where she taught at Whittier and Woodson
Schools. Phyllis married Robert J. Hartle on June 27, 1958, at St. Pauls
Lutheran Church in LaCrosse, Wis. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran
Church, P.E.O. Chapter C.U., Collectors Club, Order of the Eastern Star,
Sons of Norway, and the Austin Country Club. Phyllis was an avid golfer
and was very active in the Republican Party.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Hartle, Austin; sisters and
brothers-in-law, Doris (J. Howard) Benson, Houston, Charlotte (Jack)
Kerrigan, Houston, Ingrid (Lawrence) Slattum, Inver Grove Heights; brother
and sister-in-law, Charles (JoAnne) Sanden, Montrose, Colo.; sister-in-law
and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Robert Flynn, Edina; nieces and nephews.
Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with the Rev.
Don Deines officiating. Organist will be Janet Gilbertson and soloist
Kristin Scott.
Interment: Havana Cemetery near Owatonna. Casket bearers will be Michael
Kerrigan, Steven Kerrigan, Paul Slattum, John Flynn, David Scott, Scott
Dyson
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Friday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and on Saturday at
the church one hour before the service.
Memorials are preferred to donors choice.

Janice Banks, 53, died Wednesday, [ November 22, 2000. She was born on
August 21, 1947, per Social Security Death Index.]
She is survived by parents Robert and Shirley Hallman, Austin; sons,
William Banks and Chris Grover, Mandeville, La., Robert Banks, Buffalo
Center, Iowa; daughter, Shannon McIntyre, Omaha, Neb.; several aunts,
uncles and cousins.

Matthew Francis Gerhart 1918-2000
Matthew Francis Gerhart, 82, Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Nov. 22,
2000 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.
He was born Oct. 12, 1918, in Rose Creek to Carl and Hazel (Reagan)
Gerhart. Matt graduated from Pacelli High School in Austin and became a
carpenter. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army from 1943
until 1946. He married Phyllis Fretty on Feb. 7, 1953, at St. Augustine
Catholic Church in Austin. Matt enjoyed his ham radio, woodworking, crafts,
golf and motorcycle racing when he was younger. A member of St. Edward's
Catholic Church, he was a lifelong resident of the Austin area who belonged
to the Amateur Radio Club, VFW and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Gerhart, Austin; sister, Rosella
McArron, Madison, Wis.; brother Warren Gerhart, Monroe, Wis.; nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step parents.
Service: Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Edward's Catholic
Church at 10:30 a.m., Saturday with Father Donald W. Zenk officiating.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery in Austin with military rites by American
Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.
Visitation: Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Worlein Funeral Home and at the
church one hour before the service. There will be a 7:30 p.m. wake service
at Worlein Funeral Home Friday.

Mary B. (nee Carlin) Sparks 1915-2000
Mary B. Sparks, age 85, of Austin, Mower county,Minnesota, died on Tuesday,
Nov. 21, 2000, at the Austin Medical Center.
Mary was born on October 15, 1915, in Preston to Thomas and Elizabeth
(Maloney) Carlin. She married Merle E. Sparks. He preceded her in death on
September 14, 1996. She also was preceded in death by her parents and two
brothers, Thomas and Raymond.
Mary always loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed attending
the children's activities, including dance and sporting events. She also
liked to do needlepoint.
Survivors include five sons, Robert and Pat Carlin, Mounds View, Gary
and Donna Sparks, Oakdale, Larry and Karen Sparks, Waseca, Merrill and
Victoria Sparks, Austin, Lanny and Deb Sparks, Sioux Falls, S.D.; daughter,
Donna Overby and Bill Webb, Waconia; 11 grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; brother, Joseph and Marie Carlin, Albert Lea; six
sisters, Evelyn Marzolf, Preston, Irene Tlougan, Rochester, Helen Frank,
Prescott, Wis., Rose and Beacher Elam, Silver Bay, Gladys and Kenneth
Evenson, Austin, and Patricia Carlin, Preston.
Service: Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mayer
Funeral Home with Father Hubert Boschert officiating. Bearers will be
Daniel Sparks, Jason Sparks, Timothy Spark, Michael Sparks, John Carlin
and Christopher Evenson.

Sharon (nee Foss) Simpson 1945-2000
Mrs. William (Sharon) Simpson, age 55, died on Friday, November 24, 2000,
at Mercy Hospital.
Sharon was born on January 23, 1945, in Austin, Minnesota, the daughter
of Mrs. Melder Foss. She attended schools in the London area and Lyle.
Sharon married William Simpson on June 5, 1954, at the Methodist Church
in Early, Iowa.
She had been employed at Hudson Foods in Albert Lea until health problems
the past five years. Prior to her death, Sharon worked a few days a week at
Re-New and at Vocational Rehabilitation.
She is survived by her husband William; daughters, Mrs. Fred (Susan)
Easley, Charles City, Iowa, Debbra Wiesner; son, Joshua, Northwood; two
grandchildren; brother, Johnny Parker, Minneapolis; and mother Rose,
London; stepsisters, Mrs. William (Mavis) Bell, Marilyn Matter, Austin;
aunts, Annie Chapek, Georgia Kusy, Alice Kycek and Mrs. Frank (Mary)
Vomacka; uncle, Stanley Vomacka; several great aunts and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her step-father, Melder**; aunt, Libby
Pacovsky; and uncles, John and Frank Vomacka.

Raymond Joseph Iten 1964-2009
Raymond Joseph Iten, 45, died unexpectedly Saturday at St. Marys Hospital
in Rochester, Minnesota.
Raymond was born on Father’s Day, June 21, 1964 to Don and Carole
(Sutton) Iten in the Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego. Raymond lived
most of his earlier life in Becker, Minn. He graduated from Becker High
School in 1982 and later received a diploma from Alexandria Technical
College as an Electrical Technician. For the last few years Raymond was
self-employed.
While in school, Raymond was very active in football, wrestling, FFA,
choir and drama; he was also a member of the Kragero Kangaroo 4-H Club.
Raymond was a member of several Lions Clubs, depending upon whatever
community he was currently residing. He enjoyed volunteering his time and
talents where needed most recently at the Sherburne County Fair.
Raymond married Malla Berg of Austin on September 18, 1999 and the couple
made their home in Austin. The highlight of their union together was the
adoption of their precious, beloved sons, Maurice and Parker, on December
24, 2004.
Raymond will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He had a fun-loving,
goofy sense of humor, which endeared him to everyone. He was an unforgettable
kind of guy who loved to do or say the unexpected just to get a laugh.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Malla; son, Parker; parents, Don and
Carole Iten, Becker; sisters, Lori Sowers, Becker and Liza (Lewis) Johnson,
Fort Drum, N.Y.; father-in-law, Dick Berg, Austin; brothers-in-law, Philip
(Lori) Berg and George (Melissa) Berg; goddaughters, Tina Iten and Dawn
Johnson; many nieces and nephews; great-nephews and niece; and his best
friends, Greg and Renee Kolbinger.
He is preceded in death by his son, Maurice; mother-in-law, Doris
Berg; grandparents: Leon and Florentine Iten, Irma Sutton, Willard Sutton
and Larry Whittington.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at
St. Marcus Catholic Church in Clear Lake, Minn. The Rev. Virgil Helmin
will officiate. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28,
2009 at the church in Clear Lake and one hour prior to services. Parish
prayers will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Vallorice F. Pearson 1927-2009
Vallorice F. Pearson died on June 26, 2009 in Melbourne, Florida.
She was born on April 20, 1927 in Ankeny, Iowa, the daughter of Alof and Pearl Pearson. Vallorice grew up on a family farm in Iowa and
moved to Lyle in the 1940s. She lived in Lyle for many years, a loving daughter and companion of her mother, Pearl. She traveled a great deal, spending time in Colorado, Maryland, Florida and New York City. She enjoyed a variety of activities, from singing in the church choir, to reading great books, to winning at bingo. She had a joyful spirit and will be missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her devoted sister, Phyllis Gustafson; brother-in-law, Paul Gustafson; and many nieces, nephews and their children.
She was preceded by her beloved sisters and brother, Virginia Snyder, New York City, Alyce Hillmer, Colorado, and Frank Pearson, Minnesota.
A private interment will be in the Rose Creek Cemetery.

Elsa Louise (nee Braun) Schear 1906-2000
Elsa Louise Schear, 94, of rural Dexter, Mower County, Minnesota, died
on Sunday, November 27, 2000, at Adams Healthcare Center in Adams.
She was born on Feb. 20, 1906, in Kerrick to Emil and Emma (Whidiger)
Braun. Elsa married Merl Shear at a Lutheran parsonage in Albert Lea on
September 16, 1930. They lived in Hollandale, then moved to a farm near
Hayward and in 1942 to a farm near Dexter. Merl died on Jan. 29, 1981.
Survivors include daughters, Charlotte Sorensen, Grand Meadow and Delores
(Myron) Sorensen, Dexter; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two
great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son-in-law, Donald
Sorensen; four grandchildren; brother, Ernest Braun; sister, Martha Brown.
Service: 11 a.m., Thursday, at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Elkton
with The Rev. Daniel Wee officiating.
Visitation: Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and at the church one hour before the service.

Kenneth T. Swank1930-2000
Kenneth T. Swank, 70, formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died
Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at the Veteran's Hospital in St. Cloud.
Kenneth was born June 15, 1930, in Austin, to Edward and Helen (Leek)
Swank. Kenneth had served in the Navy.
He is survived by his mother, Helen Swank, Austin; brothers, Ronald (Winnie) Swank, Austin, Leo (JoAnn) Swank, Austin; sister-in-law, Theresa Swank, Austin; nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Edward Swank, brother, Paul Swank and a nephew.
Service: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson and Father Frank Enright officiating.
Visitation: There will be a 4 p.m. rosary on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and also from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery with Military rites by the American Legion Post No. 91. The casket bearers will be Dale Mullenbach, Kevin Swank, Kevin Kiser, Mike Swank, Scott Wilson and Nathan Swank.

Burnette Irene (nee Anderson)(Johnson) Beaver 1920-2000
Burnette Irene Johnson Beaver, 80, died at her home in Albert Lea Sunday,
November 26, 2000.
Burnette was born in Moscow Township, on April 26, 1920, the daughter
of Bernie and Othellia (Christiansen) Anderson.
On October 12, 1940, she was united in marriage with Vernon Johnson in
Adams. He preceded her in death in 1968. On February 7, 1970, she was united
in marriage with Robert "Bob" Beaver in Glenville. He preceded her in death
in 1983.
Burnette had lived in Adams, Austin and Albert Lea throughout her life.
She had been a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she had been active
in Caring and Sharing. She had also been a member of the Moose and VFW
Auxiliary. She had been a waitress at the Canton Café, B & W Café and the
Holiday Inn Restaurant.
She is survived by one daughter, Marlys (Elwood) Hagen, Albert Lea; sons,
David Johnson and Larry Johnson, both of Albert Lea; nine grandchildren;
nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Meister (Luther) Meister, Austin,
Elaine Ross, Austin; daughter-in-law, Adeline Johnson, Albert Lea; two
step-daughters; Cynthia Schneider, Albert Lea, and Suzanne Frohwein,
Austin; step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon Johnson;
husband, Robert Beaver, son Luverne "Butch" Johnson; great-grandson,
three sisters; Mildred Anderson, Avis Fuller, Ardelle Meyer; one brother,
Donald Anderson.
Service: 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea with the
Rev. John M. Hendriksen officiating.
Interment: Graceland Cemetery.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bonnerup Funeral Service and one hour before the service at the church.

Beatrice Lorraine (nee Day) Hartson 1926-2000
Beatrice Lorraine Hartson, 74, Austin, died Tuesday at Burr Oak Manor.
She was born Aug. 1, 1926, to Arthur and Elta Mae (Danley) Day in Austin. Beatrice lived in Brownsdale from 1926 until 1946 when she moved to Austin. She married Clifford Hartson in 1947 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She worked in the dairy pack at George A. Hormel & Co. and at the YMCA.
Survivors include two sons, Rodney (Kim) Day, Michael (Mary) Hartson all of Austin; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Bonnie (Jim) Strouf of Austin, Betty (Don) Voigt of Austin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one grandson.
Service: 2 p.m., Friday at Worlein Funeral Home.

Georgia May Dufty 1915-2000
Georgia May Dufty, 85, Dodge Center, and formerly of the Lyle area, died
Sunday at Fairview Nursing Home, Dodge Center.
She was born June 17, 1915, in St. Paul to George and Selma (Johnson)
Dufty. Georgia resided in Austin for many years with her parents. In later
years she resided at Fairview Nursing Home in Dodge Center. She was a member
of Austin Church of Christ and West Concord Church of Christ.
Survivors include sister, Della (Hugh) Thompson, Carrollton, Texas;
brothers, Fred (Linda) Dufty, Streamwood, Ill., Harlan Dufty, Denver,
Colo.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Neva Orcutt
and Violet Howard; and a brother, Irvin Dufty.
Service: 11 a.m., Saturday at Worlein Funeral Home.
Interment: Rose Creek Cemetery.
There will be no visitation or reviewal.

Kenneth William Alm, Sr. 1917-2000
Kenneth William Alm, Sr., age 83, of Austin, and formerly of Oakland,
died on Tuesday, November 28, 2000, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.
He was born March 27, 1917, in Freeborn County, to William and Clara
(Sanborn) Alm. He married Lucille Berhow on October 5, 1940, in Northwood,
Iowa. They lived in Oakland until moving to Austin in August 1985. A
retired section foreman on the railroad, Kenneth loved music.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Larry (Sherry) Alm,
Austin, Robert Alm, Austin, Kenneth, Jr. (Nancy) Alm, Siren, Wis., Bradley
Alm, Austin; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother and
sister-in-law, Lloyd and Jean Alm, Hayward; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille and a brother, Charles.
Service: 11 a.m., Friday at Crane Community Chapel in Austin with
Pastor Randy Petersen officiating.
Interment: Greenwood Cemetery in Glenville.

Harold Eugene Sampson 1920-2000
Harold Eugene Sampson, 80, Minneapolis, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2000,
at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.
He was born Nov. 23, 1920, in Radcliffe, Iowa to John and Minnie (Tye)
Sampson. After attending college at Ames, Iowa for two years, he moved to
Maryland where he lived for three years and then moved to Minneapolis
where he became electrical inspector for Glen L. Martin and Northern Power.
Survivors include brother, Earl (Rhea) Sampson, Austin and sister, Vivian
(David) Mix, Tracy.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Milton.
Memorial services will be announced later by Worlein Funeral Home.
Interment: Grandview Cemetery.

Darrel Jean Harvey 1936-2009
Darrel Jean Harvey, 73, died Tuesday morning, July 28, 2009, at
his home in Brownsdale, Minnesota.
Darrel was born on April 11, 1936, to Clifford and Blanche
(Rabine) Harvey in Brownsdale, where he grew up. On April 14,
1956, he married Janice A. Grant. As a young adult he worked for
Frank Lickteig, and Ralph Grant Construction, his father-in-law.
The couple moved to Northwood, Iowa in 1957, and Darrel worked for
Alfred Swensrud. In 1963, they moved to Gruver, Texas and he worked
on a ranch for Don McLain, Fred Meyer, Inc. and Attebury Grain out
of Amarillo, Texas. Darrel retired in 2000, and the couple moved to
Weslaco, Texas. In 2005, they moved back to Brownsdale to enjoy
family and friends.
Darrel is survived by his lovely wife, Janice Grant, Brownsdale;
four children: Dena (Leonard) Dickmeyer, Valley, Neb., Rick (Sandy)
Harvey, Valparaiso, Ind., Gina (Rodney) McDowell, Gruver, Texas,
Todd (LaFonda) Harvey, Taylor, Texas; eight grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; five brothers: Ronnie (Diane) Harvey,
Stewartville, Minn., Wayne (Marlys) Harvey, Blooming Prairie,
Minnesota, Delmar (Shirley) Harvey, Ocala, Florida, Fred (Helen)

Family and friends will gather for a memorial service at 10 a.m.
Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the residence of Eldora Grant at 311
North Mill Street in Brownsdale, with the Rev. Jeffrey Sage
officiating. Lunch will follow the service.

Suzanne M. (Hummel) Mataya c1954-2009
Suzanne M. Mataya, 55, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin,
passed away at home on July 26, 2009.
She was preceded in death by her father, Leo F. Hummel (Mar 27, 1930 -
Dec. 14, 1997)**.
She is survived by her children, Travis and Elizabeth; mother, Gail
Hummel; siblings, Leanne (Dick) Poshusta, Diane Hummel, Tom (Margie)
Hummel, Melissa (Steven) Wilson; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
A gathering of family and friends will take place on Monday, Aug. 3 from
5 to 7 p.m. at Bradshaw Funeral Home in St. Paul. In lieu of flowers,
memorials are welcomed.

Willis "Bill" Janssen1929-2009
Willis "Bill" Janssen, 80, of Rose Creek, passed away on July 21, 2009, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester. Olmsted county, Minnesota.
Bill was born on May 29, 1929, to Ben and Grace Janssen near Chapin, Iowa, in Franklin County. He grew up and attended school in Hampton, Iowa.
He was united in marriage to Marlis Miller on Feb. 4, 1951, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton. He enlisted in the Air Force on Nov. 25, 1951, serving as a jet aircraft mechanic for four years in Arizona. Following his discharge, he returned to Hampton with Marlis to do over-the-road trucking and work in sales in an auto parts store.
In November 1959 he moved the family to a farm south of Austin and continued farming in the Austin, LeRoy and Rose Creek area. He started selling cars for Holiday Cars in October 1968, and was involved in all aspects of the dealership. He retired in 2003 and kept himself busy by helping haul hogs for his three sons in their business.
His passion in life was owning and showing beautiful horses, specializing in show at halter. The love of the animal was passed to all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He and Marlis enjoyed hauling horses across country to various states. It allowed them to see a large part of the U.S.A.
He is survived by his wife, Marlis; four children: Barb (Bruce) Kvittem, Larry (Melanie) Janssen, Steven (Lori) Janssen and Scot Janssen; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers: Robert (Mary) Janssen, Phoenix, Ore., Ken (Ruth) Janssen, LeRoy and Duane (Esther) Janssen, Denver, Iowa; three sisters: Dorothy Miller, Sheffield, Iowa, Margorie (Ralph) Larson, Fremont, Neb., and Marilyn (Gene) Heilskov, Hampton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
Bill was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be Sunday, Aug. 2, at 3 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Austin. Visitation with the family will be from 2 to 3 p.m.

Steven Jude Bernholtz1951-2009
Steven Jude Bernholtz, 57, of Waltham, died on July 28, 2009 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota.
He was born on September 10, 1951 in Lake City, Iowa, son of Don and Bev (Schwartz) Bernholtz. Steve graduated from Lake City High School in 1969. As a young adult he worked for Dr. Mally as a veterinarian technican. After high school he attended college in Waseca, Minn. and then returned to work for Mally, Boettcher and Armbrecht in Lake City, Minn.
On June 9, 1973, Steve married Casey Budgett, and they made their first home in Waseca, later moving to Waltham. They were together for 35 loving years, until Casey lost her battle to cancer on Nov. 22, 2008.**
More than anything, Steve loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, which was evident by the small park he had set up at his house for the grandchildren to enjoy. Steve had many hobbies. All of them included being outdoors. He enjoyed team roping, riding horses and he rarely missed a day of shooting his bow. Steve owned and operated Bernholtz Trucking.
Surviving are three daughters, Jill (Roy) Baker, Austin, Jenessa (Nic) Hill, Winona and Danielle Bernholtz (fiance, Russ Crabtree), Austin; five grandchildren: Terren, Kasey and Rylee Baker, Wyatt Crabtree and Cameron Hill; mother and father, Don and Bev Bernholtz, Lake City, Iowa; brother, Tom (Darel) Bernholtz, Denison; three sisters: Susie (Daryl) Reiling, Carroll, Iowa; Ann (Jeff) Wenck, Lidderdale and Kris (Scott) Bender, of Spencer, Iowa.
Steve was preceded in death by his loving wife, Casey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 31, 2008, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin with Father Dale Tupper officiating. Interment is at Greenwood Cemetery, Brownsdale. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, and one hour prior to the service at church. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Nellie Sargent, Former Resident of Mclntire, Is Buried
McINTIRE, IOWA -- Mrs. Nellie Sargent died at the home of her son, Titus, at Lyle, on Oct. 9, 1940. She was a resident of McIntire for many years before moving to Waterloo where she had resided since.
Funeral services were held Friday at the Little Brown church, and burial in the family lot at Nashua.
She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Marvalin Leslie of McIntire, Mrs. Erma Harrison of
Nashua, and son, Titus, of Lyle, Minn.
Her husband preceded her in death about a year ago

LaVonne Bernadette (nee Kriel) Biedermann 1915-2009
LaVonne Bernadette Biedermann, 94, of Austin, died Thursday, July 30,
2009 at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center.
LaVonne was born March 2, 1915 in Warren, Minn. to Albert and Georganna
(Marsonette) Kriel. On July 15, 1939 she was united in marriage to George
Biedermann.
LaVonne was an accomplished seamstress, making clothes for her young
family and later for her grandchildren. In her later years she turned
her skills toward doll-making with many Raggedy Ann and Andy Dolls going
to her grandchildren. She crocheted a number of afghans in her leisure
hours and gave them to family and friends. LaVonne was a homemaker and also
worked as a dental assistant.
LaVonne had a love of music which she instilled in her children, teaching
them to play piano and encouraging them to pursue various instruments.
There were many family gatherings accompanied by impromptu concerts.
Her love for baking and cooking are well-known and have been passed down over
the years. Her family members still use many of her hand written recipes.
In most recent years at Primrose and Comforcare, LaVonne enjoyed
playing card games, bingo, and Trivial Pursuit, but never more than when
she was a winner! She was a warm and caring lady who appreciated the
kindness of others.
Survivors include five children: Stephen (Bonnie) Biedermann, Palm Coast, Fla., Mary Kay (Skip) Stevens, Henderson, Nev., Michael (Ruth) Biedermann, Austin, Greg (Rebecca) Biedermann, Lindstrom, Minn., Monica (Joe) Mendez, Rockford, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; sister, Donna (Ralph) Hunt, Thief River Falls, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Biedermann, in December 1982; her grandson, Gabriel Biedermann, in November 1997.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church.
Interment will be in St. Bernard Cemetery in Thief River Falls.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the activities department
at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center in LaVonne's honor.
Funeral arrangements are by Mayer Funeral Home.

Merle J. Hatle 1924-2009
Merle J. Hatle, 85, of Adams, passed away Friday, July 31, 2009 at the Austin Medical Center in Austin.
He was born April 15, 1924 in Ransom County near Lisbon, N.D. to Emil and Lena (Johnson) Hatle. He was the youngest of their seven children. Merle was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church rural Lisbon. Both of his parents passed away when Merle was 11 years old and he was raised by his older brothers and sisters.
He graduated high school in Lisbon in 1942 and he married Myrtle L. Johanson on Nov. 19, 1942. They farmed in North Dakota until 1944 when they moved to the Adams area, where they farmed until retirement in 1988. In 1978 they moved into Adams; Merle continued to farm but he also worked at the Adams Health Care Center and he continued to do so after retiring from farming.
He was active in the Farmers Union, Marshall Lutheran Church, Forte Milers, county assessor and the Rusty Rail Dance Club and was also a corn seed dealer.
Merle really enjoyed spending time with his family and he will be missed.
Merle is survived by his children: David (Connie) Hatle, Austin, Curtis Hatle, Pelican Rapids, Minn., Gloria (Robert) Mallory, Austin, Michael (Barb) Hatle, Adams, Minn; 11 grandchildren: Rhanoda Kollar, Rhonda Hatle, Toni Hoffman, Eric Hatle, Curt Hatle, Jr., Kara Mallory, Jayme Lamers, Brady Mallory, Kya Hatle, Scott Hatle and Brandi Schneider; step-grandson: Jamie Tapp; 19 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; one brother-in-law; and two sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Myrtle, in 2001; brothers, John and Clarence; sisters, Agnes Boe, Ella Himebaugh, Gladys Moen Boe and Myrtle Tukua.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 3, 2009 at Marshall Lutheran Church with the Rev. Shari Mason Officiating. Interment will be in the Marshall Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home on Sunday from 5-8 p.m. and at the church on Monday for one hour before the service. Organist will be Pat Hinz and soloist will be Dennis Boe.

Delbert James Hanson 1925-2009
Delbert James Hanson, 83, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died
Friday, July 31, 2009 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.
He was born on October 3, 1925 in Freeborn County to Harold and Emma
(Paulson) Hanson.
Delbert married Lorraine Ferguson on Sept. 17, 1955 at the First United
Methodist Church in Austin. Delbert served in the U.S. Navy in World War
II. After the war he worked at the Geo. A. Hormel Co. until he retired.
Delbert was a member of Grace Baptist Church and the American Legion and
volunteered his time with the Red Cross and the Austin Medical Center. In
his spare time, Delbert enjoyed fishing and hunting for grouse and traveling
with his wife. Delbert and Lorraine moved to Tucson, Ariz. for nine years.
He particularly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Delbert is survived by his wife, Lorraine Hanson, Austin; children: Susan
Hanson, Paul and Nancy Hanson, Oliver Springs, Tenn., Julie and Mark Placek,
Austin; grandchildren: Stuart Hanson, Christopher Placek and Curtis Hanson;
great-grandchildren, Ashlynn Schewe and Gaige Schewe-Placek; nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father and two brothers.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 at
Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Gordon Larson Officiating. Visitation
will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Monday from 5-7 p.m. and for one
hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.
Honorary bearers will be Curtis Hanson, Stuart Hanson, Christopher Placek,
Ashlynn Schewe and Gaige Schewe-Placek.

Ralph Henry Drees, Sr.,1920-2009
Ralph Henry Drees, Sr., 89, of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota, died on
August 1, 2009 at his home after a courageous battle with heart and lung
disease.
Ralph was born May 23, 1920 to Joseph and Rose (Kraus) Drees in Lidderdale,
Iowa. Ralph married Ethel Daiker on Jan. 5, 1942 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church
in Auburn, Iowa. Together they farmed all of their married life; mostly near
Taopi, Minnesota. They retired to Adams in 1989.
Ralph drove a John Deere A tractor from Lidderdale, Iowa to Taopi when he
moved his family to Taopi. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church
in Adams since 1954, a life member of the Sons of the American Legion and
was proud to be the one who raised and lowered the flag at Sacred Heart
Catholic Cemetery for several years. He enjoyed farming, playing cards and
spending time with his family.
Ralph will be remembered for his strong faith, his joy in being a father
and his example as a husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Ethel and his children,
Rosann Sanford, Spring Valley, Minn., Ralph (Janice) Drees, Jr., Spring
Valley, Minn., Stephen (Nancy) Drees, Austin, Mary (Jerry) Ott, Mason City,

will be at the Adams Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the
church on Wednesday for one hour before the service.

Mildri Olson Njos 1822-1908
Mrs. Mildri Olson Njos, age 87 years, died at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Lars O. Erie, on October 1, 1908. She was born in Norway in 1822 and
was married to Hans Olson Njos in the year of 1851 and came to this country
in 1856, settling in Dane County, Wis. They resided there for five years and
then moved to Union County, S.D. and there they resided two years. They moved
to Adams Township, Mower County, and lived on the old homestead until about
seven years ago when her husband died. She then came to live with her son,
O.H. Njos where she made her home until about four months ago when she went
to live with her daughter, Mrs. Lars O. Erie.
The deceased is survived by four children as follows: Mrs. Paul Anderson,
O.H. Njos, Mrs. Lars O. Erie and Mrs. Ed Anfinson. One daughter died at the
age of seven years.
Mrs. Njos has 34 grandchildren, 27 living and 7 dead;
38 great-grandchildren, 35 living and 3 dead; and one great-great-grandchild.
Burial was made on October 3, in the Little Cedar Cemetery, Rev. O.C.
Myhre officiating.

Monica L. (nee Biedermann) Mendez 1949-2009
Monica L. Mendez, 60, of Rockford, Minnesota, died on July 31, 2009, at
St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Monica was born on Feb. 5, 1949, in Austin, to LaVonne and George
Biedermann. On May 10, 1975, she was joined in marriage to Joe F. Mendez.
Together they raised two children, Jessica and Richard. From an early age,
Monica loved playing piano and participating in school musicals. Later, she
turned that love toward teaching young piano students. Monica could be seen
and heard playing the organ or the piano nearly every Sunday at Our Father’s
Lutheran Church in Rockford, Minn. She accompanied the church choir, was
a member of the bell choir and played at funerals and weddings while
holding down a full-time staffing position with Loram in Loretto, Minn.
Monica lived for her family in every sense. She was a devoted daughter
and the glue that kept her four siblings in close contact with one another.
Her children were her pride and joy, and her three grandsons a blessing in
her life. She never missed an opportunity to bake a loaf of bread or rolls
for an impromptu gathering at her kitchen table. And her table was always
set with care and consideration for the season.
She would do whatever it took to be with her husband, her children,
son-in-law and grandchildren. They were the joy of her life. One of her
favorite memories was the time spent sitting on a bench on the shore of
Lake Superior in Duluth with her husband, Joe, just being together. Her
entire family will miss her dearly.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Mendez; children, Jessica (Dave)
Dornsbach, Albertville, Minn., Richard (Ricky) Mendez, Buffalo, Minn.;
grandsons, Carter, Garrett and Owen Dornsbach; siblings, Stephen (Bonnie)
Biedermann, Palm Coast, Fla., Mary Kay (Skip) Stevens, Henderson, Nev.,
Michael (Ruth) Biedermann, Austin and Greg (Becky) Biedermann, Lindstrom,
Minn.

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA -- Roger Allen Cooling, 60, of 211 36th St. S.W.,
Austin, died Saturday, November 25, 1995, at the Burr Oak Manor Home.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today at Deer Creek Valley
Lutheran Church, Glenville, with the Rev. Kevin Olson officiating.
Burial will be in the Woodbury Cemetery, Lyle, with military
rites by the American Legion of Lyle.
Visitation was held from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at The Worlein Funeral
Home, 1801 Fourth St. N.W., Austin. There also will ber visitation one
hour before services today at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family
prefers memorials to the American Diabetes Association and the Deer Creek
Valley Lutheran Church, Glenville.
Roger Allen Cooling was born Sept. 14, 1935, in Albert Lea, a son of
Alvin and Hazel (Ingvaldson) Cooling. He was united in marriage to Patricia
Cafourek in Hayward. He spent most of his life in the London area. He was
a postmaster with the United States Postal Service for 32 years. He was a
member of the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Glenville.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Cooling of Austin; sons
and daughter-in-law, Todd and Ronda Cooling of Lyle; Michael
Cooling and partner, Steve Luce of Golden Valley; daughters and
sons-in-law, Tara and Ray Phelps of Byron, and Tracy and Rod
Schilling of London; grandchildren, Alison, Amy and Jessie Cooling,
Laura and Jonathan Phelps of Alexander, and Jordan Schilling
and one stepgranddaughter, Trisha Cone; sisters and brothers-in-law,

Robert E. Nelson 1933-2009
Robert E. Nelson, 76, of Austin, Minnesota, died on August 6, 2009, at
St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, after a long illness.
He was born May 19, 1933 in Austin, to Lloyd W. and Ella M. (Exelby)
Nelson. Robert graduated from Austin High School in 1953. He was married
to Barbara Lewis, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin in 1955; they later
divorced. He was also married to Delores Grimley and Beatrice Nelson and
later divorced. He had worked at several area businesses in the early years
including the Austin Country Club and the Hormel Co. in sales. For most of
his adult life he lived in the Minneapolis areas as a bartender and a meat
salesman. He returned in 2000 to Austin, where he lived the rest of his life.
He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. This past year he was a
resident of St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea. He was a pro golf fan,
Minnesota Twins fan and an avid Vikings fan.
Robert is survived by sons, James (Lori), Duluth Minn., David (Tony Berg),
Oakland Calif. and Lloyd, Blaine, Minn.; daughters, Lori (Steve) Siege,
Orange City, Iowa and Kris (James) Hemann, Chester, Iowa; eight grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Diane Smith, Montana, Lynne
(Mike) Boyer, Albert Lea, Minn.; Nancy (Brian) Clingman, Mike (Darcie)
Bjorgo, Austin; aunts and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Lorraine Price,
Lois LaValley, Judy Bjorgo and brother, Kenneth “Shag” Nelson.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, 11 a.m.; Oakwood Cemetery with the Reverend Ted Colescott officiating. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary arranged his cremation.

Margaret L. (McNee) Riles Madson 1920-2009
Margaret L. (McNee) Riles Madson, 88, of Austin, Minnesota, died on
August 10, 2009 at the Austin Medical Center.
Margaret was born December 21, 1920 in Big Timber, Montana, the fifth
child of William and Nina (Gates) McNee. In 1926 she moved with her family
to Spring Valley, Minn. She started and graduated from Spring Valley High
School in 1938.
On September 21, 1940 she married Kenneth Riles in Northwood, Iowa. In 1945
they purchased a farm in the Lansing Village. On May 25, 1957 Kenneth was
killed in an automobile accident and Margaret was left with seven children:
six boys and one girl, ages 3 to 16 years old. She took her responsibility
very seriously and always attended their many activities. After moving to
Austin, Margaret worked as a dental assistant for Dr. R.L. Downing for 10
years and took the LPN nursing course and graduated the same year as her
youngest son graduated from high school. Margaret then worked for several
years and lastly at Sacred Heart Care Center.
On August 10, 1976 she married Peder Madson. They enjoyed the farming life
together with his land near Blooming Prairie and hers in Lansing. Peder
passed away on August 10, 2005.
Survivors include a daughter, Judi (Paul) Perkins, Austin; five sons:
Richard Riles (Marie Ramaker), Lansing, John Riles, Albert Lea, Douglas
(Ruth) Riles, Hastings, Minn., Steven (Mary) Riles, Rochester, James
(Carolyn) Riles, St. Michael, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Riles,
Austin; 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren;
great-great-grandchildren; sister, Florence Stanford, Decatur, Illinois;
sister-in-law, Doris McNee, Connecticut; her step family and many relatives
and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; both husbands, Kenneth and
Peder; son, David Riles; four brothers and two sisters.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009
at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating.
There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 7:30 p.m. wake service on Saturday
at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and also one
hour before the service at the church on Sunday. Interment will be in
Calvary Cemetery.

Orin J. Wangen 1923-2009
Orin J Wangen, 86, of rural Albert Lea, Minnesota, died on August 7,
2009 at St. John’s Lutheran Home.
Orin Joseph Wangen was born on Aug. 2, 1923 in Freeborn County, the son of
Louis and Ellen (Arett) Wangen. He was baptized and confirmed at Oakland
Lutheran Church. Orin attended rural school and has farmed all of his
life. On June 27, 1948 he was united in marriage to Martha C. Ramsey
at East Freeborn Lutheran Church. Orin was a trustee of Oakland Lutheran
Church, served on the call committee and the building committee. He also
served on the Oakland Elevator Board.
Orin enjoyed his fishing trips up north, travelling south for a few
months during the winter and the times the family spent at Happy Days
Resort near Park Rapids. He enjoyed playing cards but was a true farmer
who enjoyed working the land as he drove his tractor.
Survivors include his wife, Martha; sons, Kenneth (Diane), Steve (Linda),
Donald (Connie), Larry (Robin) and David and special friend Tiffany;
daughter, Kathryn Jo (Dennis) Kreuscher; grandchildren, Evan and Andrew
Wangen, Jeremy and Nicholas Wangen, Rochelle Doug Kilabarda, Brian (Sarah)
Julson, Kayla and Aaron Julson, Jason (Joanne) Kreuscher, Lucas Kreuscher,
Mandy, Casey and Dustin Wangen and Ashton and Adison Wangen; eight
great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Doris Johnson and Janice (Bob)
Knutson; brother-in-law, Gordon (Ramona) Ramsey.
Orin was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gladys Nellis.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009 at 10:30
a.m. from Oakland Lutheran Church. Pastor Bob Berthold will officiate.
Burial will be at Oakland Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday
from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to
