Debby A. (Olson) Ihrke, 58, died on June 1, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

Debby was born on September 3, 1950 in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, to C. Vernon and Amaryllis Olson. She grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School and later from the RN program. She married Keith Ihrke on September 22, 1973 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Debby leaves behind her husband, Keith Ihrke, Clearwater, Minn.; son, Vaughn (Kelly) Ihrke, Isanti, Minn. and daughter, Kelly (Nathan) Marvin, Clearwater. Debby was blessed with two grandchildren, Neva and Noah Ihrke who lit up her life. She also leaves behind her parents, Vernon and Amaryllis Olson, Austin and her sister, Becky (Rich) Johnson, Gilbert, Arizona.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the Miller Funeral Home in Fridley, Minnesota.

Randy Dwight Ziegler, age 58, of the Lyle-London area, died on June 1, 2009 at the Minneapolis Veterans Hospital after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born on October 10, 1950 to Donald Dean and Dona Jean (Johannsen) Ziegler in Osage, Mitchell county, Iowa. He was a 1968 graduate of Lyle High School. After completing his education, Randy served his country with the Marines from 1968 until 1971. A Vietnam veteran, he belonged to Lyle American Legion Post 105. He married Vickie Vosburgh on June 8, 1974. They were later divorced. Past Fire Chief of London and a self-employed painter, Randy was employed by Zareba Industries in Ellendale.

Survivors include his mother, Dona Ziegler, Lyle; two daughters, Megan and Sarah Ziegler, Austin; granddaughter, Alyssa Bos; two brothers, Darwin (Kathy) Ziegler, Farmington; Gary (Cindy) Ziegler, Lyle; former spouse, Vickie Ziegler.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald; sister, Gail; special friend, Marion Sorenson and his grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin with the Reverend Dr. Andrew Lindahl officiating. Interment will be in Union Presbyterian Cemetery, Stacyville, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Casket bearers will be Monte Strouf, Larry Vosburgh, Michael Nelson, Dallas Vosburgh, Mark Olson and Carl Ellis. Honorary casket bearers are David Rawn, Roy Vosburgh, Dwight Goslee, Dale Wahlen, Bob Sauer and Roger Smith.

Betty Jane Conklin, age 81, died Friday morning at the Austin Medical Center from complications related to Parkinson’s disease.

Betty Conklin was born Betty Jane Kjensmo to Ole Kjensmo and Minda Thorson Kjensmo on July 8, 1928. When her mother was killed in a car accident in 1931, Betty was sent to live with an aunt and uncle, Edward and Josephine Thorson, and eight cousins on the farm on the prairie west of Brooten, Minnesota. In that home she spoke only Norwegian. She has more relatives in Norway than in the United States.

Betty and her husband, Dale Conklin, were known for their work as advocates for gays, lesbians and their families. They were honored by the Philanthrofund Foundation of Minnesota in 2001 for their work with families across the state. The Conklins were frequently called upon to speak at conferences and to the state legislature on behalf of gay and lesbian organizations.

She retired in 1990 from the Austin Public Schools system after 31 years as a teacher. During her career, she taught in a variety of settings including special education, kindergarten and first grade in the Elkton School District; second grade at Sumner School; and as the owner for five years of Conklin’s Nursery School, the first nationally-accredited nursery school in Austin. She began teaching in one-room rural schools in Kandiyohi County, with 30 children in all eight grades. She acknowledged that her biggest worry at that time was being able to start the wood stove in the mornings. She earned her degree from Winona State University and a fifth-year degree at Mankato State University.

In retirement, she and her husband traveled the U.S., Europe, Scandinavia, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Nepal and India. A lifelong music lover, her interests later expanded to baseball; she was a serious Twins fan. Her top priority continued to be St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Mother to four children: Daniel (Liz) Waterloo, Iowa, Deb Pinger, Cincinnati, Ohio, Lori (Walker) Conklin, Kenyon, Minn., and Tim Conklin and Jiwan Bajracharya, Vancouver, B.C. Canada; and six grandchildren: Jeni (Doug) Conklin Taylor, Jeff Conklin, Andrea Walker, Ben Walker, Alex Keller and Cora Keller Zoan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale, in 2000; sisters Wahneta and June Lorraine Kjensmo; and brothers Stanley, Rodger and Charles Kjensmo.

Funeral services will be held on Monday June 8, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Reverend Kristi Koppel officiating. Organist will be Neal Erickson. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Monday for one hour before the service. Violinist will be Susan Radloff.

Ernest H. Ottjes, age 87, of rural Stewartville, Minn., died Thursday, June 4, 2009 of natural causes at the Stewartville Care Center, where he had lived for the past two months.

Ernest was born on January 11, 1922 in rural Mower County. He grew up on the family farm, attended rural schools and farmed with his family. Ernest served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He achieved the rank of sergeant and received the Purple Heart after being wounded on Okinawa.

Following his discharge, he was married on March 23, 1946 in Stewartville to Marian E. Beach. After their marriage the couple moved to a farm in rural Stewartville in 1951 where they farmed and have continued to make their home. Ernest was a Mayo Clinic employee for 23 years until retiring in 1984.

He was a member of Sumner Center United Methodist Church, where he served on the Trustees and Finance committees and was a member of the Stewartville American Legion Post 164 and its VFW.

Survivors include his wife: Marian Beach, Stewartville, Minn.; daughter: Julie (Joe) Brossard, Chandler, Minn.; four sons: James (Karen) Ottjes, Akron, Ind.; Alan (Kathy) Ottjes, Stewartville; Leslie (partner, Robert Trapp) Ottjes, Rochester, Minn., Terry Ottjes, Stewartville.; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Elizabeth (Schatzberg) Ottjes; an infant sister, two brothers and seven other sisters.

The funeral for Ernest will be at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at Sumner Center United Methodist Church in rural Racine, Minn. with the Rev. Victoria Ashley officiating. Burial with military graveside honors by the Stewartville American Legion and its VFW will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 8, 2009 at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday morning. The family prefers memorials to the Sumner Center United Methodist Church, the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer's Association.

Darlo Iverson, age 80, of LeRoy, Minn., died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at her home. Darlo was born on Aug. 22, 1928 in Deer Creek, Minn. to Adolph Wickstrom and Geneva (Green) Wickstrom. She attended Deer Creek Public Schools and graduated in 1946. She earned her degree from Moorhead State Teachers College in 1948.

After her graduation, she taught for one year in Adrian, Minn. before moving to LeRoy, where she continued teaching until 1953. Darlo was united in marriage to Vernon “Chub” Iverson on June 22, 1951 in Bowling Green, Ohio. They lived and farmed in LeRoy until moving to Alaska for Chub’s military assignment in 1954. They returned to LeRoy to resume farming 19 months later. In 1967 they moved to the Iverson farm southwest of LeRoy.

She is survived by her husband: Vernon “Chub” Iverson, LeRoy; three daughters: Deb Meyer, LeRoy, Pam (John) Koster, Rochester, Minn., and Colette (Bill) Miles, LeRoy; four grandchildren: Jessica and Jenna Meyer, and Lauren and Clayton Koster; four step-grandchildren: Christopher, Michael, Elizabeth and Thomas Miles; sister-in-law: Ethel Wickstrom; two nieces and five nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Gary; and her infant sister, Gracia.

Funeral services for Darlo G. Iverson will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at the LeRoy Lutheran Church with the Reverend Thomas Kolden officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Mable L. Lane, 88, of Austin, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born June 25, 1912, at Austin to Eugene and Sarah Belle (Blowers) Worden.

She attended Austin High School and worked for Hormel Foods Corp.

She married Edwin L. Ruechel at St. John's Parsonage in 1932. She later married Lloyd A. Lane.

She lived in the Austin area and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Marlene Ruechel, Adams; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Edwin Ruechel on Jan. 5, 1965, and Lloyd Lane on March 4, 1969, an infant daughter, Anna Belle and a son, Duane.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Crane Community Chapel with the Rev. Randy Petersen officiating.

Duane Eugene Iverson, 34, of Austin, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, Utah.

He was born April 25, 1967, in Austin to Durwood and Joanne Iverson.

He graduated from Austin High School in 1985. He attended Austin Vocational Technical School for electronics and graduated in 1987.

He moved in 1987 to Las Vegas, Nev., where he worked for United Coin and Machine. In 1989, he moved to Mesquite, Nev., and was employed as a slot manager for both Virgin River Hotel and Casino and CasaBlanca Resort and Casino.

He lived in Mesquite until his death.

He enjoyed water activities, camping, fishing, reading and all sports, especially golf.

Survivors include a daughter, Taylor Jo Iverson, Mesquite, Nev.; parents, Durwood and Joanne Iverson; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Loran Hoppe; a niece, a nephew, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Service: Private funeral services were held May 25, 2001, at Macken Funeral Home Chapel in Rochester with Pastor James W. Heining of Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating.

Interment: First Lutheran Cemetery, Blooming Prairie.

Margaret A. Morgan, 88, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Adams Health Care Center.

She was born Jan. 3, 1913, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, to Robert and Katherine Jackman Laughlin. She attended Mason City Junior College and graduated from Iowa State University in 1934 with a degree in home economics.

She married John L. Morgan on July 4, 1936 in Minneapolis; they were married 64 years until his death in 2000.

She was food manager for Schraft's Food Restaurants Inc. in New York City for two years. She was also a home economics teacher at Austin High School for 25 years, retiring in 1978. She served as the home economics department chair and taught at the Adult School. She was past president of the Sacred Heart Auxiliary, past president of the Philomathian Club and memorial chair of the St. Olaf Hospital Auxiliary for 19 years, and an active member of the League of Women Voters, the Austin Education Association and the Red Cross.

She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and active in its Rosary Society. She enjoyed art, music, playing bridge, travel and crafts.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and David Baudler, Pledmont, Calif., a son, Jack Morgan, Muskegon, Mich., five grandchildren, and three sisters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers three sisters and a granddaughter.

Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2001, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson officiating.

Visitation: 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Friday, June 1, 2001, at Mayer Funeral Home. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Friday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Warren A. Thomsen, 80, of Austin, died May 29, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

He was born July 6, 1921, to Carl and Kristine (Nielsen) Thomsen in Austin. He married Evelyn Lunachek on Dec. 18, 1938.

He was employed by Hormel Foods Corp. and was former president of Local P-9. He belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars, DFL party, Elks, Fraternal Order of Odd Fellows, Lutheran Brotherhood, Masonic Bodies-Royal Arch Masons, Osman Temple, Fidelity Lodge, Shrine St. Bernards Commandry, Knights Templar, the Senior Citizens Center and the Salvation Army.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He was also a past VFW commander and an auctioneer. He donated his time to the Salvation Army, senior citizen groups, Shriner charities and auctioneering. He enjoyed fishing, boxing, refinishing furniture and socializing with friends.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Thomsen, Austin; a son, David, Austin; a daughter, Penny Marshall of Rochester; a brother, William "Bill" Thomsen, Austin; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two brothers.

Service: 11 a.m., Saturday, June 2, 2001, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating.

Visitation: Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2001, and visitation will be at the church an hour before the service on Saturday.

Edgar Eugene Hahn, 46, of Austin, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

He was born June 5, 1954, in Austin to Gordon and Elizabeth (Diddams) Hahn and graduated from Austin High School in 1972. He also graduated from Austin Vocational Institute, majoring in banking and finance, and Austin Junior College with an associate of applied sciences and associate of arts degrees. At age 12, he was diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy.

He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Austin. He also volunteered his time with the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Labor Day Telethon for many years.

He was a member of the Mower Council for the Handicapped, a life member of Fidelity Lodge No. 39 AF&AM, a sunshine chairman for the Order of the Eastern Star Unity Chapter No. 29 and a past master councilor of Osman Chapter, Order of DeMolay. He enjoyed watching sports on television; especially the Minnesota Twins, and scoring the events.

Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Hahn, Austin, as well as aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon "Don" Hahn, and a brother, Joseph Hahn.

Dr. Lloyd Franklin Van Pelt, 70, of Austin, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001.

He was born June 23, 1930, on a farm near Brownsdale. Dr. Van Pelt worked about a year before volunteering for the Army in 1949. He served in the infantry and joined the 7th Cavalry Regiment at the Pusan perimeter shortly after the Korean War began as a part of the Lynch Task Force that carried the attack north. After being injured twice and sent for treatment to the hospital ship Hope and to Army hospitals in Japan, he was reassigned to Sendai, Japan, and then returned to the United States.

Van Pelt married Constance Jean Rasmusson of Minneapolis on Nov. 21, 1951.

He was stationed at Fort Eustus in Virginia for the remainder of his enlistment and an extension caused by the Korean War, where he was honorably discharged.

The couple first set up their home in Austin, where Lloyd worked as a stockboy in a grocery store, then as a bartender. He began college courses to become a veterinarian. The couple moved to Minneapolis, where Lloyd continued college. He was accepted to veterinary school, and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1959.

The couple then moved to southern California.

He had a long and distinguished professional career in laboratory animal medicine. Positions held included chief, veterinarian services, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and director for the Center for Experimental Animal Resources, Northwestern University. He also was a member of the following professional organizations and honors: Honor Roll member, American Veterinary Medical Association; diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine; member, American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care; member, Society for the Study of Reproduction; past president of the Animal Health Foundation; charter member of the California Veterinary Medical Association's Board of Governors; member, board of trustees of the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association; Who's Who in Veterinary Science and Medicine; and the American Fertility Society.

Survivors include his wife Constance "Connie," three daughters, Lee Ann (Derek) Peterson of Juneau, Alaska, Lynn Marie (James) Lawrence of Pleasanton, Calif., and Laura Jean Van Pelt of Rohnert Park, Calif., two grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Sorensen, of Albert Lea.

Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Austin, with the Rev. Kris Wee officiating.

Marvin H. Nelson, 70, of Edina, died Thursday, May 24, 2001. He was a retired corporate pilot for Quadion Corp.

Gerald S. Knudson, 87, died May 23, 2001, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home, Austin.

He was born May 27, 1913, to Andrew and Carrie (Braaten) Knudson at the family farm home in Cottonwood County near Westbrook.

He was baptized into the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church, Westbrook, on July 20, 1913, and confirmed there July 24, 1927. He attended Country School No. 68.

He married Florence Engler on Sept. 14, 1937, at the Lutheran parsonage in Westbrook. They lived north of Westbrook, on the home place and east of Westbrook. In 1957, they sold the farm and purchased the Springfield Motel in Springfield. Later they sold the motel and moved to St. James, where he worked as a sales representative for Hubbard Milling until he retired.

The couple moved to Austin in 1978.

He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin for 23 years.

He entered St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin in November 1997.

Survivors include his children, son Gary (Diane) Knudson, Austin, daughter, Cheryl (James) Deneffe, Pewaukee, Wis.; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sister, Gunda Peterson; sisters-in-law, Laura Knutson, Lil Knudson, Hilda Byers, all of Westbrook; brother-in-law, Lawrence, Westbrook; sister-in-law, Frances Engler, Westbrook; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Laverne and Pansy Nelson, Austin; and sister-in-law, Viola Kirchner, St. Peter; and nieces and nephews.

Alice Orinda Krokas, 90, of Austin, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center, Austin.

She was born Dec. 3, 1910, in Adams to Bennie A. and Mattie O. (Olson) Asper. She attended school in Adams and was baptized and confirmed at Little Cedar Lutheran Church. She moved to Austin and married John F. Krokas May 3, 1930. She moved to California in 1962, where she lived until 1991. She moved to Comforcare in 1998.

She enjoyed traveling, crocheting, crafts and cooking as well as being with family; especially her grandchildren.

Alvin C. "Ace" Erickson, 89, of Austin, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home, Austin.

He was born April 25, 1912, at Austin to Andrew and Celia (Guttormson) Erickson.

He attended Austin Public Schools and married Hildred Hanson Aug. 30, 1931.

He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad most of his life.

He was a member of the Sons of Norway and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Jerenne and Clifford Blaser, Branson, Mo., Rosalee and Carl Jech, Austin, Linnea and Keith Burtch, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Ardith Erickson, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; sisters Frances Granholm, Austin, Irene Stanton, San Diego, Calif; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Hildred in 1994, grandson, Terry Blaser, and a brother.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2001, at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary, Austin, and one hour before services Saturday.

Marjorie E. Seavey, 91, of Grand Rapids, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at Itasca Medical Center.

She was born May 13, 1910, in Mower County to Leaman and Arvilla Twaites. She lived in Garner, Iowa, and Rochester and graduated from Emmons High School and attended business college at Mankato.

She married Roland Seavey July 27, 1929 and the couple lived in Austin and raised their family. In 1947, she moved to Jacobson and in 1963 to Grand Rapids. She lived at 401 River Road in Grand Rapids after the death of her husband, Roland, in 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Richard (Barbara), Leroy, Mich., and Rodger (Elaine), Port Angeles, Wash.; a daughter, Karen (Ralph) Edin, Grand Rapids; a sister, Ruth Katter of South Carolina; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

Service: 2 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Libbey Funeral Home Chapel, Grand Rapids.

Interment: Noon Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Lansing Cemetery, Lansing.

Visitation: 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Brian L. Swank, 47 of Plymouth, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at his home. He was the owner and president of Softech of Ill Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Janine; daughter, Jennifer; mother, Mrs. Coral Swank, Austin.

He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Swank.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2001, Mass of Christian Burial, Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Medina, with arrangements by Wasburn-McReavy-DuSchane Chapel.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Austin.

Visitation: One hour before funeral services Thursday at the church.

Ambrose K. Durben, 77, of Austin, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at his home.

He was born April 5, 1924, at Meyer, Iowa, to Arthur and Louise (Weber) Durben. He was raised on a farm near Meyer, Iowa, and married Rosella Lee on Sept. 7, 1950, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Austin. He was a farmer until the couple moved to Austin in 1951. He worked as a truck driver for Golden Dairy for 22 years and other businesses in Austin.

He was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Austin.

Survivors include wife, Rosella Durben, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Debra Durben, Albert Lea; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda Durben, Austin, Lisa and David Patterson, Lyle; four grandchildren; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Anicita and Kenneth Overrocker, Austin, Alverna and Elmer Miller, LeRoy, Eileen Koenigs, Adams; brother and sister-in-law, Lester and Ann Durben, Meyer, Iowa; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Stanley and sister-in-law, Caroline Durben, brother-in-law, Marvin Koenigs, and mother-in-law, Elise Lee.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Austin, with the Rev. Virgil Duellman officiating.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Mayer Funeral Home, Austin, where there will be a 7 p.m. wake service, and from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Leona Emma Martha (Baumgartner) Matter, 95, of Austin and Waltham, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Burr Oak Manor, Austin.

She was born July 21, 1905, to John and Marie Baumgartner on a farm in Waltham Township. She was baptized at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, rural Waltham, where she also attended parochial school and was confirmed by the Rev. F.H. Milius and became a lifetime member. At the age of 17, she moved to Milwaukee, Wis., to do domestic work.

On June 7, 1925, she married Arthur Matter of Milwaukee, Wis., at St. Michael's Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Milwaukee, Wis., until Oct. 1, 1938, and made their home in the Waltham Township and the Mayville area.

She sang in the church choir, was a member of American Lutheran Church Women Circles and taught Sunday school at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, where the family was church custodians for 26 years. She also volunteered for the Salvation Army Austin Corps, Mower County Senior Citizens Center, 4-H clubs and enjoyed gardening and square dancing, plus playing pool and cards as well as crocheting doilies.

Survivors include sons, Arvin and his wife, Mary Ann, Austin, Rodney and his wife, Gail, Menomonee Falls, Wis.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Luella Baumgartner, Austin, Hilda Juhl, Milwaukee, Wis., Linda Kannenberg, West Bend, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, in January 1975; parents, John and Marie Baumgartner, brothers, Frank, Ed and Johnny, and sisters, Laura Wollenburg, Gertrude Basgall, Clara Husemoller.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2001, at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, rural Waltham, with the Rev. John Heruth officiating. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, and one hour before services at the church Thursday. Arvin John Matter, 71 of rural Austin, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester.

He was born Jan. 21, 1930, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Arthur and Leona (Baumgartner) Matter. They moved to Minnesota when he was 8 years old. He graduated from Austin High School in 1949 and was employed by Wilson Meatpacking Co. in Albert Lea until 1951 when he joined the Army, serving as a cook. After his discharge in 1953, he returned to work at Wilson for a year until he was hired by Eddie Paper Co. (now Weyerhauser), where he worked until retirement on April 29, 1992.

On May 4, 1963, he married Mary Ann Rose at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin with the Rev. John Manger officiating. A confirmed member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church, rural Waltham, he served on the church council. He raised chickens, cats, many different breeds of ponies and AKC registered dogs. For many years, he showed horses at county and state fairs. He also enjoyed fishing and outdoor work.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann, rural Austin; two daughters, Julie Ann (Jeff) Huffman, Owatonna; Vickie Lynn Novak, Austin; two sons, Randy Matter, Owatonna and fiance Michelle Nelson; Phillip Matter, Austin; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; one brother, Rodney (Gail) Matter, Menomonee Falls, Wis.; niece, Suzanne Matter; nephew, Kevin Matter of Wisconsin; several other nieces and nephews.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 25, 2001, at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, rural Waltham, with the Rev. John Heruth officiating.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, and at the church one hour before services Friday.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery in Austin with military rites by American Legion Post No. 91 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1216.

Raymond L. Stayner, 81, of rural Rockford, Iowa, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Muse Norris Hospice In-patient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

He was born Jan. 8, 1920, at Sargeant, Minn., the son of Thomas Grover and Nelli (Knapp) Stayner. He married Helen Iverson on July 17, 1942. He was drafted into the Army, where he earned the rank of corporal, serving with the Corps of Engineers in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska. After receiving an honorable discharge, he moved with his wife to the Charles City, Iowa, area, where his parents had moved and worked for area farmers.

His wife, Helen, died Jan. 10, 1950, in Charles City, Iowa. On March 1, 1953, he married Alice Mabel Duesenberg at the former Flood Creek Methodist Church. In 1954, he went to work for the former Oliver/White Farm Tractor Factory at Charles City, Iowa, working in the final inspection department until retiring 27 years later in 1982.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Mason City, Iowa, American Legion Shannon Wilson Post No. 174 of Charles City, Iowa, and enjoyed volunteering for the Cedar Valley Engine Club, rural Charles City, Iowa, as well as woodworking at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, Rockford, Iowa; five children, Bonnie Mason and her husband, Kent, Minnetonka, Minn., Dean Stayer and his wife, Debbie, Walnut Grove, Mo., Diana Heyden and her husband, Ken, Vernon, Conn., Nancy Weide of Mason City, Iowa and friend, Everett Paeper, Cherokee, Iowa, and Richard Stayer and friend, Joan Temple, Cross Plains, Wis.; three sisters, Edna Wulff, Charles City, Iowa, Erma Grovdahl and husband, George, Sargeant, Minn., and Madeline Grotalushen and her husband, Wayne, Rochester; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, two brothers, Woodrow and Harry Stayner, and two sisters, Marvel Knutson and Margaret Berge.

Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Faith Baptist Church, Mason City, Iowa, with the Rev. Miles M. Grismore officiating.

Interment: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Flood Creek Cemetery, rural Rockford, Iowa, with military rites by the Charles City, Iowa, ceremonial unit.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, Rockford, Iowa, where the family will greet friends at 6 p.m. and one hour before services Wednesday.

James Cherwinka, 75, of Cannon Falls, Minn., passed away on June 6, 2009, at the Trinity Care Center in Farmington, Minn., following an brief illness, surrounded by his wife and children.

James George Cherwinka was born on August 28, 1933, in Green Bay, Wis., the son of Dorothy (Guile) and Charlton Cherwinka. His family moved to Antigo, Wis., where he attended school and graduated from Antigo High School. He went on to Lawrence College in Appleton, Wis., to become a draftsman. He was employed by Hayes-Lucas Lumber in Owatonna and Blooming Prairie, Minn. He also worked at Crane Lumber in Austin. James married Muriel (Hansen) at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, on Oct. 20, 1956. They lived in the home Jim built until 1967, then moving to Cannon Falls. He worked for Hellickson Lumber in Wanamingo, Minn., until he opened Tree Stores Lumber Yard in Cannon Falls. He operated the TreeCom truss plant in Cannon Falls until 1980, when he sold the business. He continued to work as a salesman for Structural Component Supply Company, Littfin Lumber, Automated Building Components and Wausau Supply retiring in 2007.

He was a member of the Minnesota National Guard for more than 20 years, reaching the status of captain. He was also a Boy Scout leader while they lived in Austin. James was a member of St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council as chairman and taught Sunday school. He was a member of the Cannon Falls Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years. He served on the Cannon Falls School Board for 21 years, also serving as chairman. He was a member of the Rotary Club, served on the Planning and Zoning Commission, assisted in fundraising for Cannon Falls Education Foundation, and enjoyed playing Santa for the preschool children in Cannon Falls. He was on the Building Commission for 7-Crafts. Most recently he served on the Cannon Falls City Council, and served as treasurer of the Care & Share Foundation and Economics Initiatives of Cannon Falls. James enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and going to morning coffee with the “Coffee Crew” in Cannon. His favorite past-times were workingin his garden, feeding and watching birds and telling stories and jokes.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Muriel, Cannon Falls; daughter, Kristine (Christopher) Sande, Cannon Falls; son, Brian (Dawn) Cherwinka, Faribault, Minn.; daughter, Gretchen (Hugh “Skip”) Thomson, Sandstone and son, Marcus (Lu Anne) Cherwinka, Golden Valley, Minn. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brittany (fiance, Ryan Archambault), Ashlee and Kelsey Cherwinka of Faribault; Alex Cherwinka, Rachel, Keith, Kayla and Hunter Sande of Cannon Falls; Claire and Nathan Cherwinka of Golden Valley. Other survivors include his sister, Sandra Herzog; nephews, Judd and Sean Herzog and great-niece, Riley Malak all of Wausau, Wis.

He was preceded in death by son, Steven; parents, Dorothy and Charlton Cherwinka; mother and father-in-law, Edward and Gena Hansen and hisgrandparents.

Jim touched many lives and made a difference in the Cannon Falls community.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday June 12 at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church, 7459 Highway 19 Blvd., Cannon Falls. Visitation will be Thursday, June 11 from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church and continue one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be in the Grandview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Austin. Memorials are preferred to the Cannon Falls Education Foundation, St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church or Shepherd’s Center of the Cannon Valley. Arrangements by Lundberg Funeral Home of Cannon Falls.

Pallbearers are Eddie Smith, Dave Vangsness, Gary Eagen, Gerald Husaby, Ed “Bud” Engen, Durwood Iverson, Ernie Sparstad and Greg Anderson.

Libbie Agnes (Mrs. Jimmie) Levy, 95, formerly of Austin, passed away June 6, 2009 at the Cedarview Care Center, Owatonna.

Libbie was born Nov. 1, 1913 to John and Mary Votava in Linwood, Nebraska. She attended country school and high school in Stirum, N.D., and continued her education to receive a certificate for rural teaching and business. Libbie married Jimmie Levy in September 1940. Together they raised two children, Larry and Lyndel. They farmed southeast of Austin and the farm was truly a family effort. There were many memorable family summer trips, and winters spent in Texas. The neighbors were a real sense of joy and many became lifelong friends. Libbie enjoyed old time music, barn dances, going fishing, playing canasta and telling jokes. She always looked forward to her family's visits.

Survivors include her daughter, Lyndel (Ken) Finholdt, Owatonna, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Meridee Levy, Columbia, Md.; grandchildren, Eric (Angie) Finholdt, Nate (Ariana) Finholdt, Todd (Erin) Finholdt, Allison (Rob) Benson; great-grandchildren, Ben, Zach, Kaden, Karsen, Hailey, Riley and Ella Finholdt, Jesse and Faith Benson.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie, on Aug. 25, 1978; son, Larry on April 21, 2008; parents, John and Mary Votava.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Mayer Funeral Home with the Reverend Dale Christiansen officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and also one hour before the service at Mayer Funeral Home on Thursday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.

Kathryn Losey, age 86, of Grand Meadow died on June 8, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

She was born July 15, 1922 to Olaf Skaran and Tillie Myhre Skaran in Grand Meadow Township, Mower County. She attended Grand Meadow High School where she was part of the undefeated girls basketball team graduating in 1940. Later that year she was united in marriage to Paul Losey Sr. in Spring Valley, Minn. Kathryn lived in Grand Meadow while her husband served in the Army and during the 1950s worked for the United States Post Office in Grand Meadow. In 1963 Paul and Kathryn moved to a farm west of Spring Valley and moved back to Grand Meadow in the late 80s.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and antiques and at one time had the largest Carnival Glass collection in the state.

Kathryn is survived by three children, Sharon Walterman, Hutto, Texas, Paul “Bob” (Colleen) Losey, Grand Meadow, Minn. and Vance Losey, Spring Valley, Minn.; two brothers, Arthur (Ruth) Skaran, Belview, Wash. and Norbert (Shirley) Skaren, Ostrander, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in November of 2007 and brother, Raymond.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday June 12, 2009 at the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church with the Reverend Ann Siverling officiating. Burial will take place at the Grand Meadow Cemetery on Saturday June 13, 2009. Friends may call at the Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow from 5 to7 p.m. on Thursday June 11, 2009 and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Betty Jo Oswald, age 42, of Brownsdale, died on June 5, 2009 at Fieldcrest Care Center in Hayfield.

Betty was born May 6, 1967 in Austin. She married Matt Oswald on Oct. 2, 1987 and spent time together until May 2006. Betty worked as a Hy-Vee kitchen aide. She loved her Harley Davidson motorcycle and riding it. She loved her children and pets and spending time with friends and family.

Survivors include her children, Denae Oswald (Scott Fitzgerald), South St. Paul, Dexter Oswald, Madison Lake, Laine Oswald, Brownsdale, Leah Oswald, Brownsdale, Mason Oswald, Brownsdale; pet cat, Smokey; siblings, Toni (Kenny) Burbank, Imboden, Ark., Brian Goviera, Brownsdale, Bonnie (James) Becvar, Hayfield, Brandie Klingfus, Austin, Amber Klingfus, Northwood, Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Viola Klingfus; brother, Scott Freese; grandparents, Nellie Swenson, Carl Swenson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield with the Reverend Paul Hauschild officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home and also 1/2 hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Berdin "Dean" F. Larson, 87, of Austin, Minnesota, died on June 7, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

He was born on October 12, 1921, in Wilmot, S.D., to Berdin and Lila (Hasner) Larson. He attended school in Waseca County, Minn. Dean served in the United States Marine Corps 2nd Division as a light machine gun crewman from January 1941 until October 1945. He spent two years in the South Pacific, fighting at Tarawa, Tinian and Saipan. He was united in marriage to Frances Arlene Bird in Portsmouth, Va. on May 20, 1945. Together they shared 64 years of marriage and raised five children. Dean worked at Geo. A. Hormel and Co. for 38 years. Following retirement, he joined his wife as a volunteer at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.

He enjoyed wood working and helped with ceramics in the crafts room. He also did a lot of wood working at home in his garage shop, making small furniture and craft projects that Frances painted. He loved reading Western novels, especially Louis L’amour and enjoyed Western movies and country music. He loved spending time with his family, working outdoors in his yard and gardening. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, VFW Post 1218 and the American Legion Post 91.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; sons, Jeff (Cherri), Brooklyn Park, Paul (and partner, Jan Wiezorek) Chicago, and Keith (Nancy), Rochester; daughter, Debra (Steve) Burma, Austin; daughter-in-law, Joanne (Paul) Nesse, Prescott, Wis.; grandchildren, Amanda (Mike) Schlafke, Hayward, Wis., Jesse (Jill) Burma, Lyle, Katrina Nesse and partner, Samantha Floyd, Minneapolis, Chad Burma, Austin, Alicia Nesse, Prescott, Wis., Sara Larson, St. Paul, Corey Larson, Rochester; great-grandchildren, Marshall Dean Burma and Colton Aaron Burma, Lyle; sister, Lila (Bob) Evans, Peoria, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Lyle (Darlene) Bird, Freeborn; sister-in-law, Rosella Peek, Bloomington; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kristi Koppel officiating. The organist and soloist will be Neal Erickson. Visitation will be at Worlein Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. and one hour before the service on Thursday at the church. Interment will be in LeSueur River Lutheran Church Cemetery, New Richland, with military rites by American Legion Post 91. Casket bearers are Paul Nesse, Steve Burma, Jesse Burma, Cody Rossman, Chad Burma and Corey Larson. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of arrangements. Michael Moses Peterson, 33, of Byron, Minnesota, died on June 9, 2009, in Byron. Michael was born on June 10, 1975 in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota. He is the son of Jeffrey Peterson and Ruth (Clayton) Vale. He was baptized at the Brownsdale Catholic Church and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Sargeant. Michael graduated in 1993, from Mayo High School in Rochester. He served in the United States Army from 1994 to 1996 in Hawaii. He was united in marriage to Marie Peterson and later divorced. He worked as a machine operator at Schmidt Printing in Byron from 1996 until the time of his death. He enjoyed his children, fishing, camping, exploring, music and was a freelance artist.

Michael is survived by his daughters, Abigail McCabe, Plainview, Minn., Kai-Mica Peterson and Trinity Peterson, both of Hayfield, Minn.; mother, Ruth (James) Vale, Wasioja, Minn.; father, Jeffrey Peterson, Hayfield; maternal grandparents, James (Jeanette) Clayton, Austin; paternal grandmother, Barbara Peterson, Hayfield; sisters, Anna Eidem, Sioux Falls, S.D. and Crystal Peterson, Red Wing, Minn.

The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at St. John's Lutheran Church at 28959 630th Ave., Sargeant, Minn. with the Reverend Ronald Prigge officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Czaplewski Family Funeral Home in Hayfield, and one hour before the service at the church. Military honors will be by the Hayfield American Legion Rothie Post 330. Memorials are preferred to the family.

Rose Konken, 68, of 200 N.E. 1 St. Ave. Brownsdale, died Saturday, March 26, 1999, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home, Austin.

She was born March 13, 1931, in Red Rock Township, Mower County, Minn. to Henry and Anna (Tammen) Konken. She attended school in Red Rock Township District 42 and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, near Dexter in 1945 and remained a member until her death. Never married, Rosie cared for her mother and worked various jobs in the area of health care. She enjoyed crafts.

She is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Margaret Konken, Brownsdale, Ben Konken, Brownsdale, Walter and Bernice Konden, Jordan; sisters and brothers-in-law, Metta and Dale Garnatz, Wykoff, Sinnie and Harold Gaul, Austin, Grace and Mike Miner, Winona, Florence and Walter Beyer, Morrison, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Anna Konden; sisters, Sophie and Ella; brothers, John and Edward and three infant siblings.

Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Dexter, with the Rev. Dale Schaffer officiating. Casketbearers are Larry Garnatz, Al Miner, Harold Gaul Jr., Doug Konken, Donald Konken.

Interment: Greenwood Cemetery, Brownsdale.

Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Monday, March 29, 1999, at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, and one hour before services Tuesday at the church.

MAPLEVIEW, MINN. -- Lavilda E. Ashton, 88, of 149 Graham Street, Mapleview, died early Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Fieldcrest Care Center, Hayfield.

She was born Aug. 10, 1910, at Hayfield, the daughter of Knute and Mathilda (Roughoff) Hakkedahl. She married Darrel M. Ashton at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hayfield, May 18, 1935. She grew up in Hayfield on a farm and was a school teacher in rural schools. After marrying, she and her husband moved to Austin, where she worked for Hormel Foods Corporation until retiring in 1971.

Survivors include her husband, Darrell; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Larry Moucha, Hayfield; three granddaughters and one great-grandaughter; and one sister, Eleanor Tieden, Hayfield.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Austin, with the Rev. Harold Usgaard officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, March 29, 1999, at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Catherine Delia Eagen, 89, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at Madonna Towers, Rochester, where she was a resident.

She was born Oct. 19, 1909, to Stephen and Catherine (Cassidy) Lickteig, Indianola, Iowa. She married John Bernard Eagen and worked as a teacher.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Zahradnik, Rochester; son, William, Eagen, Minneapolis; two grandchildren and one great-grandson; three brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Rena Lickteig, Austin, Fred and Marion Lickteig, Rose Creek; a brother Samuel Lickteig, Collegeville,; four sisters, Mary Cotter, Austin, Abbie Chase, Portland, Ore., Thomasine Farnsworth, Yukon, Okla., and Rita Lickteig, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, on May 27, 1982, and a grandson, Mike Zahradnik.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 30, 1999, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation: 3 p.m. wake service today Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Mayer Funeral Home, where friends may call (today) 2-5 p.m. and 9-10 a.m. Monday prior to the service.
