Ruth B. Sparks, 81, Rt. 5, Austin, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, March 29, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota. [Ruth was born on November 4, 1918.]**

She was born Nov. 4, 1918 in Renova, Minn. to George and Gertrude (Wiedemann) Harvey. she graduated from Austin High School and was married to Wayne Nowell on Nov. 21, 1937, he died Aug. 27, 1966. On October 21, 1970 she was married to Art Sparks, who died July 12, 1990. He had worked in the office of the Austin JCPenney during the 1960's

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Bonnie and Larry Steene, Austin; Joanne and Gene Brinkman, Stewartville; stepchildren Giff and Esther Sparks, Sargeant, Arlene and Bob McNeill, Bowling Green, Mo., Larry and Sharon Sparks, Sargeant, David and Jacki Sparks, Blue Earth, Clinton and Wendy Sparks, Dexter; five grandchildren; 13 step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 16 step great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Hallie Harvey, Dade City, Fla., Laura Rieken, Grand Meadow, Bernice Nowell, Austin, Donna Nowell, Austin, Lizzi Moon, Rochester; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Wayne Nowell and Arthur Sparks, parents and ten brothers and sisters.

Evelyn Laura Plantz, age 88, of Hayfield, Minnesota, and formerly of Brownsdale, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Friday, March 31, 2000, at her son's home in Rochester.

She was born October 2, 1911, at Parker, S.D., the daughter of John J. and Anna H. (Stevermer) Sipple.

She married Clarence William Plantz December 28, 1931, at Blue Earth.

Raised in Parker, S.D., she moved to Minnesota Lake in 1934 and also lived at Blue Earth, Granada, Austin, Brownsdale and Hayfield.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hayfield, the Hayfield Senior Citizens Club, Catholic Ladies Aid and Birthday Club.

She enjoyed camping, traveling with family, playing cards and making quilts.

Survivors include three sons, Gene C. Plantz, Rochester, John C. Plantz, Cadott, Wis., and Leon P. Plantz, Rochester; three daughters, Marvis G. Weaklen, Cresco, Iowa, Bonita A. Ames, Ventura, Iowa, and Mary K. Kopp, Chatsworth, Calif.; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence in 1983, three sisters, Genevieve Depape, Ellen Stevermer and Agnes Sipple, one granddaughter and two great-granddaughters.

· Service: 10:30 a.m. funeral mass Monday, April 3, 2000, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hayfield, with the Rev. Richard Dernek officiating.

Leo Fern Wilson, 98, of Wabasha, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000 at St. Elizabeth Hospital Nursing Home in Wabasha.

BURIAL AT OAKWOOD CEMETERY, AUSTIN

Donald Joseph Sandeen, 81, of Austin, died on May 11, 2009 at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota.

He was born October 6, 1927 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Ernest and Cecelia (Eckstrom) Sandeen. Don lived on a farm in St. Paul, on Lake Johanna, until his parents moved the family to a farm near Kasson, Minn. in 1940. In 1945 Don graduated from high school in Kasson. He attended the University of Wyoming after passing a test to get into the engineering program for the US Army. The war ended shortly after he started the program, so he was sent to basic training in Arkansas and on to Hawaii to be a specialist in the Army Air Corp. Upon returning home from the military, Don went to the Globe School of Business in St. Paul. He returned to Kasson and worked at the Dodge County Court House in Mantorville, Minn.

Don met his future wife, Marian (Chum) Schueler in Kasson, where she was a teacher. Don and Chum were married June 24, 1950. When Don was hired as the Freeborn County Deputy Assessor, he and Chum moved to Albert Lea, Minn. He also sold investments for the IDS Company. Don and Chum moved to Austin, where Don became the Deputy County Auditor of Mower County and later became the Mower County Treasurer. Don went on to become the Business Manager for the Austin Public School System. After he retired in 1984 from Austin Public Schools, he went to work for the Cadre Company selling investments for school systems. Don was a member of the Masonic Lodge, President of the Austin Junior Chamber of Commerce, President of School Business Managers Association of Minnesota, President of the Austin Country Club in 1970, a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Chairman of the United Way and Chairman of the board of the Red Cross where he was instrumental in acquiring funding for the new building. In retirement, Don and Chum enjoyed their winters in Gulf Shores, Ala. and in his spare time, Don enjoyed traveling, golfing, fishing, hunting and playing bridge.

Donald is survived by his son, Jay Sandeen, St. Paul, Minn.; daughter, Sara (Gary) White, Austin; grandson, Tyler White; granddaughter, Jenna White; brother, Rollie (Rae) Sandeen, Banning, Calif.; nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Chum; his parents; three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 18, 2009 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. Andrew M. Lindahl officiating. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Visitation was at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m.

Honorary Bearers will be Jim Clasen, Mel Haldorson, R.H. Isele, Tom Morem, Dick Robinson, Roger Saman, Gary Sutter and Clark Tollefson.

Mabel Benora Overby, 103, of Austin, died on May 11, 2009 at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota.

She was born on January 25, 1906 in Black Hammer, Minnesota, to Oscar and Thora (Sandholt) Hegge. Mabel married Carl Overby on Aug. 29, 1926 in Black Hammer. In her spare time, Mabel enjoyed planting flowers, making pies and fishing. Mable was especially good at making quilts, making 2 for each of her children and one for each of her grandchildren. Mabel was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and was the oldest living member of the Black Hammer Lutheran Church.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; daughter, Delores; son, Paul; sons-in-law, Earl and Orville; a grandson; a great-grandson; a great-granddaughter; parents; brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 15, 2009 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Todd Portinga, AiM officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. and for one hour before the service at the church on Friday.

Mabel is survived by her children, Carstin and Wanda Overby, Austin, Marion Lingbeck, Austin, Jean Sullivan, Austin, Richard and Janet Overby, Austin, Laurel Carpenter, Austin, Charles Overby; 25 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren and 53 great-great-grandchildren.

Opal Fern Sprague died on Friday, may 8, 2009 at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, Iowa.

Opal was born on October 17, 1934 in Willow Springs, Missouri, the daughter of Fern and John Essink. She grew up and went to school in South Dakota. Following high school Opal went to school to become a teacher. She met her husband, Stanley Sprague, while in school and they taught in various small schools in South Dakota. In 1971 Opal and Stanley moved to Austin, where they owned and operated the Norge Village Laundromat. In 1982 Opal went back to school at the Votec to become an RN. She worked as a nurse at the Austin Medical Center and later moved back to South Dakota where she continued working in nursing. Following her retirement Opal moved to Albert Lea. She enjoyed spending time with friends, traveling, playing scrabble, reading, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchild.

Survivors include her children, Roger Sprague, Virgil Sprague and Russel (Lynn) Sprague; grandchildren, Dustin, Jennifer, Jessica and Levi Sprague; great-grandson, James Sprague; sisters, Joann (Lavern) Ross and Mary Hemminger; brother John (Penny) Essink; special friend, Keith Hall; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley; son, Orrin Sprague and her brother-in-law, Cecil Hemminger.

George Leslie Grovdahl, age 67, of Stewartville, Minnesota, died on May 12, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, Minnesota.

George was born December 24, 1941 in Rochester, Minnesota, to George and Erma (Stayner) Grovdahl. He was baptized and confirmed at Evanger Lutheran Church where he was a life-long member. He attended District 91 and Hayfield High School, and he farmed with his father on the family farm that his great-grandfather founded. George served in the U.S. Army in 1964 and 1965, and returned to work on the family farm. He left farming in 1988 to work as a custodian for the Rochester School District at Harry Bishop and Pinewood schools.

George was united in Marriage to Doris Marie Dick on September 19, 1992 in Stewartville, where they have made their home. Doris is employed at Ability Building Center in Rochester and George had retired in October of 2007 due to health problems. He was a past active member of the Hayfield American Legion, where he sang in its choir. After moving to Stewartville he became a member of its American Legion. George and Doris enjoyed dancing, country music and going to Branson, Mo. They also enjoyed tractor pulls, antique tractor shows, flea markets and he collected Oliver toy tractors. George was a loving husband, son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend.

George will be missed by his wife, Doris; sister, Jan (Don) Flatness, Glenville, Minn.; nephews, Jon (Sari) Flatness, Savage, Minn. and Mike Sween of Racine, Minn.; niece, Janean (Joe), Ryan, Tommy and Anna Mestnik, Prior Lake, Minn.; mother-in-law, Mildred Dick, Wabasha, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Rita (Mark) Schmitt, Rogers, Minn.; Mary (Bob) Press, Pinckney, Mich., brothers-in- law, Randy (Jane) Dick, St. Charles, Minn., Jerry (Patty) and Dale (Jeanne Dick, Millville, Minn., Pete (Janet) Dick, Windsor, Colo.; Don Sween, Racine and aunts, uncles, many cousins, special friends and neighbors.

Jeffrey Orvis Finseth, age 56, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on May 13, 2009 at his home.

Jeff was born on September 12, 1952 in Rochester, Minnesota, to Orvis and Estella Finseth. On February 14, 1976 he was united in marriage to Deborah J. Hanley at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa. Jeff worked for 29 years at Cedar Valley Services as a production supervisor. He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters, taking them to the park, having tea parties and sharing snackies. He loved "the boys," his three Bichons. He will be sadly missed by his best friend and wife, his children, grandchildren and all of those who appreciated his humor.

Donald W. "Jenny" Jendersee, 62, died Wednesday at Rochester Methodist Hospital.

He was born April 25, 1938 in Amour, S.D. He married Shelley Zimmerman in August 1957. They were later divorced. He graduated for Elkton High School. He moved to the Rochester area in 1957. He worked for IBM for 30 years and farmed in the Eyota area. After his retirement he was involved in several area businesses. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, basketball, fast pitch softball and golf.

Besides his membership in the Zumbro Lutheran Church, he belonged to the IBM Quarter Century Club, Elks Lodge, Eastwood Men's Golf League and Ducks Unlimited.

He is survived by sons, Terry, Scottsdale, Ariz., Steven (Marcia) Tucson, Ariz., Bradley (Susan) Santa Barbara, Calif., stepsons, John (Denise) Jefferies, Jr., Medford, Dr. Caryll Jefferies, Ogdensburg, N.Y., Michael Jefferies, Philadelphia, Pa.; stepdaughter, Lisa Jefferies, Medford; four grandchildren; brothers, Melvin (Gloria), Burnsville, Harvard (Peggy), Rochester, Duane (Shirley), Austin.

He was preceded in death by his father and a grandson.

Anne J. Beckel, 69, of Park Rapids, formerly of Austin, died Sunday, September 24, 2000, at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Anne Jeanette Jones was born July 23, 1931, in Austin, to John and Elizabeth Jones. She graduated from Austin High School in 1949, William Woods College in 1951 and Indiana University in 1953. On Jan. 16, 1954, she married Leonard Beckel in Austin.

Betty Jane Pogones, 79, rural Blooming Prairie, died Monday, September 25, 2000, at the Austin Medical Center in Austin.

Betty way born April 29, 1930. She was married to Lovirn R. Pogones on November 20, 1950.

Betty enjoyed flowers, gardening, needlework and the love of her family.

Dorothy I. Ferguson, age 75, died on Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Burr Oak Manor Nursing Home.

Dorothy was born on September 26, 1924, at Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, the daughter of Mark S. and Emelia (Lerum) Hamilton. She graduated from Austin High School and worked for the Geo. A. Hormel Co. She was married to Vernon G. Ferguson on Nov. 5, 1945, at Austin. She enjoyed sewing and was an avid quilter.

She was survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mike (Judy) Ferguson, Austin; daughters and son-in-law, Winnie and Ben Goette, Albert Lea, Sarah Ferguson, Austin; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Dale and Mary Hamilton, Osseo, Thelma Hamilton, Graham, Wash.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA - Milton Emil Norton, 88, 308 Third Ave. SW, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000 at the Austin Medical Center.

Milton Emil Norton was born Jan. 12, 1912 in Austin to Guy and Agatha (Stern) Norton. On June 11, 1932 he was united in marriage to Stella Carstens in Austin. Milton was a retired employee of Hormel Foods. He like to fish, hunt and camp. He was a member of the American Legion, Loyal Order of Moose, A.A.A. Club and the Gopher Hawkeye C.B. Club.

Franklin E. Stephenson, 73, formerly of Dexter, died Sunday, Jan. 23, at his home in Yucaipa, California.

He was born Oct. 27, 1926 to Stanley and Joy (Franklin) Stephenson at Dexter, Minn. Franklin graduated from Austin High School in 1945 and enlisted in the armed forces the same year, serving in World War II. He married Dorothy Evenson in 1946. He was discharged from the service in 1947 and worked at a grain elevator for 27 years. A member of the Masons, Eastern Star of Grand Meadow, American Legion, he was also in the Dexter Fire Department for over 20 years and formerly mayor of Dexter. Franklin was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Elkton. Franklin and Dorothy moved to California in 1978 where he was a grain inspector.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; sons and daughters-in-law Richard and Joan Stephenson, Aurora, Colo.; Randy and Barb Stephenson, Dexter; daughter and son-in-law LeaAnn and Bill Howe, Dexter; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister Camilla Farnsworth, Austin; brother Stanley Stephenson, Alexandria, Va.

Ruth M. Christensen, age 91, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Monday, January 24, 2000 at Comforcare Care Center in Austin.

She was born June 13, 1907, the youngest of eleven children, in Fillmore County, rural Lanesboro, Minn. to Elling and Carrie (Hove) Hildestad. Ruth was baptized and confirmed at North Prairie Lutheran Church and attended country school at rural Lanesboro, doing some of her studies in Norwegian.

In 1933 she was united in marriage to Arthur Christensen. They farmed in the Lanesboro area until moving to Austin in 1943. Ruth was a homemaker and loved visits from her family and friends. Many of her nieces and nephews spent extended time at her home. A longtime member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, she was a resident of Comforcare for 19 years since her husband's death. She loved taking part in any and all activities she could and enjoyed cats and being out of doors.

She is survived by one sister-in-law Grace Christensen, Mabel, Minn.; nieces and nephews in the United States and Canada.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; her parents, five brothers and five sisters.

· Service: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Worlein Funeral Home with the Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating.

· Interment: Grandview Memorial Gardens, Austin

Henry J. Grovdahl, 96, of Kasson, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2000, at Field Crest Care Center.

He is survived by his wife Mable Grovdahl, Kasson; daughter Joyce and Everette Hettinger, Kasson; sons Herbert and Ardis Grovdahl, Kasson; Donald and Jenny Grovdahl, Hayfield; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters Laurine Gulbransen, Kasson, Myrtle Evjen, Stewartville; brother Obert Grovdahl, Dodge Center.

Clayton Gute, 77 died Dec. 26, 1999 from complications related to Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy. His spirit remained strong, he never complained, and he looked forward to each new day throughout his illness as he did throughout his life.

He was born Nov. 7, 1922, in Austin, to Leonard and Bessie Gute. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in Italy during World War II. After returning from the war he worked for the Hormel Company for nearly 40 years. Married Lorette Nielsen in 1947. They made many friends and memories during their 52 years of marriage.

He loved his family and he loved Christmas. On Christmas Eve he was able to give his grandsons the presents he had lovingly picked for them. During this season of gifts and love, we hope that you take time to appreciate the great gift of life and share with someone you love how special they are to you.

Clayton is survived by his wife Loretta; daughters Karla Jennison (Tom) and Karen Crompton (David); and his grandsons Hart and Chance Crompton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter Vicki.

Our family wishes to thank the medical staff at the University Medical Center especially Dr. Kefton and Dr. Patrick and nurses Anne, Rita and Gladys for their kindness and compassionate care. A family memorial service is planned.

Priscilla Prive, age 59, of Dexter, died on Tuesday, January 25, 2000, at her home.

She was born April 9, 1940 in Fall River, Mass. to Seraphin Oliver and Julia Y. Gagne.

She drove school bus in Lincoln, Rhode Island for 14 years. She then became a truck driver working for different trucking companys. She met Donald Standy in 1985 who became her lifelong companion. She had driven truck for Prime Incorporated on Springfield, Missouri until July of 1999 when she became ill. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crafts, cats and listening to country music.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Richard Carrier, Europe, George and Linda Carrier, Barre, Vt., Oscar and Paula Rainville, Dexter; daughters Karen Rainville, Dexter; Julie Mork, Dexter; significant other Don Standy, Dexter; 11 grandchildren; aunts, Rita of Colorado, Theresa of Maine, Louise of Maine, many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter.

Corena N. Lommen, 104, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Monday morning, Jan. 24, 2000, at the Sacred Heart Care Center where she had resided.

She was born on Dec. 28, 1895 at Albert Lea, Minn. to Lewis and Mathilda (Tangen) Henry. After graduating from Albert Lea High School, she attended Mankato State Teachers College. She taught first grade in Lake Benton, Minn, after which she came to Austin to teach at Lincoln School. She met Dr. P.A. Lommen at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, and they were married in 1923. Together they raised five children with care and concern. Corena's dedication to her family and her church were the foundation of her life. She was active in the church in many organizations. The Austin Medical Auxiliary was founded, largely through her efforts.

At the age of 99, she left her home to become a resident of Sacred Heart Hospice where she received outstanding and loving care.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Robert and Jean Lommen, Austin, Dr. Peter A. Lommen, Austin, Dean and Louise Lommen, Burnsville; daughter and son-in-law Helen and Jack Moors, Lincoln, Neb., 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by Dr. Peter A. Lommen, Sr. (Spouse), Dr. Morris L. Lommen (Son), Audre Lommen (Daughter-in-law), Mary Kay Lommen (Daughter-in-law), Agnes Wadsworth (Sister), Verner O. Henry (Brother)

Ruby Clarice Hueman, age 88, of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Saturday, January 22, 2000, at Adams Health Care Center.

She was born June 25, 1911, in Adams Township, Minn., to Robert and Clara (Qualey) Anderson.

Ruby had worked for Hormel Foods Corp. and then married William Hueman on Feb. 21, 1933, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. After they were married, they moved to Taopi and then to LeRoy and Austin for a few years each and then moved back to Taopi until 1957, when they moved to Adams. While living in Taopi, she had worked as a cook for the school in Taopi for many years and had belonged to the Taopi Birthday Club. She also was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was involved in many church activities. She enjoyed cooking and canning, cross-stitching and embroidering, and also gardening. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, William Hueman, Adams; daughters and sons-in-law Clarice and Herman King, Rochester, Louise and Loren Monson, LeRoy, LaVonne and Jerome Landherr, Adams, LaDonna Hueman, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Mary Hueman, Blooming Prairie, Richard and Linda Hueman, Adams; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and Kenneth Sprau, Austin; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Grace and Rolland Ross, Adams; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Raymond Hueman, grandson Kevin King, grandson Mark King, great-granddaughter Katlin King, two brothers, one sister and son-in-law Vernon Mullenback.

Inez (Bersie) M. Olson, 92, of Austin, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Austin Medical Center.

She is survived by daughters, Ardelle Fitzsimmons, Apple Valley; Robert and Sally Erickson, Lakeville, Arthur and Sue Erickson, Apple Valley, Shelly and Patrick Olberding, Roseville; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister Helen Ebel, Clearlake, S.D.; many nieces, nephews and cousins; two sisters and three brothers.

Ober Treef Larson, 81, of Mower County, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000 at Prairie Manor in Blooming Prairie.

He was born on February 17, 1918, in Montana, to Ole T. and Sophie (Nelson) Larson. He lived in Mower County most of his life and worked at Geo A. Hormel & Co. until his retirement. An avid reader, he also enjoyed archery, hunting, fishing, camping, scuba diving, golfing, bowling, playing cards and traveling. He belonged to the Archery Club, helped with the Boy Scouts and was active in the Senior Citizens Center.

He is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Curtis and Daisy Larson, Austin, Loris and Dorothy Larson, Austin, Myrtle Larson, Adams; sisters and brothers-in-law Shirley Tucker, Austin, Ardis and Howard Herr, Brownsdale, Verla and Douglas Thompson, Lansing; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Otto and Nomer and brother-in-law Leonard.

Jay W. Gildner, age 73, retired Career Minister in the U.S. Foreign Service died of cardiovascular failure at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C. on January 14, 2000.

Jay Gildner, who was born in Mason City, Iowa, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He graduated from the University of Minnesota magna cum laude in 1949 and was appointed Phi Beta Kappa. He remained active in his Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity since his graduation.

Over a period of 28 years with The United States Information Agency including an assignment at the White House as Assistant Press Secretary to President Kennedy, Mr. Gildner covered the Agency's top positions in Washington and abroad. In 1983, he retired from USIA to become Vice President of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty, Inc. Both organizations, funded by Congressional Grants, then operated out of Munich, Germany, broadcasting in 21 languages to audiences in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union.

Mr. Gildner is the recipient of the Agency's Superior Honor Award, and the Meritorious Honor Award. He also held the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy's Edward R. Murrow Award in Public Diplomacy. When asked to comment on Mr. Gildner's role and his influence on the activities of USIA since its inception, a senior associate from Gildner's USIA days, shocked by news of his death, stated simply: "Gildner did it all, and he did it well."

Since retiring from government, Mr. Gildner has been very active in community affairs. His main pro bono activities include representing the Lake Shore Property Owner Associations of Northern Minnesota in their efforts with the U.S. Forest Service to modify timber and forest management policies and practices, including the policy and plans for the Chippewa National Forest. He was the first ever public member of the Chippewa Forest's standards and guidelines monitoring team. He was a member of the Natural Resources Committee of the Upper Mississippi. He also worked with groups interested in international education and foreign affairs. He was a member of the advisory board of the Walker Pilot Independent newspaper.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years Beverly Eriksen Gildner and three sons: Page W. Gildner of Chevy Chase; Gray M. Gildner of Fairfax Station, Va. and wife Jean with son Dylan and daughter Lauren; and Hunt W. Gildner of Apple Valley, Minn., with wife Barbara, daughters Allison and Emily and son Jared. Others are a sister, Mary Gildner Snore and husband John of Naples, Fla., and a brother, Dan Gildner and wife Nancy of Boulder City, Nev, and sister-in-law Carol S. Gildner of Seabrook, Md.

He was preceded in death by his parents Kleo and Ruth Gildner of Austin, Minn., and his brother Colonel John L. (Jack) Gildner USAF Retired.

Duward C. (Dude) Larson, 85, of 1708 Second Street NE, Austin, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000 at Burr Oak Manor Nursing Home.

He was born June 16, 1914 in Grand County, S.D. to Berdin and Lila (Hasner) Larson.

He attended rural schools in South Dakota and Freeborn County, Minn. He married Elouise Schultz on Feb. 25, 1943 in Lamond, Minn. He worked at the Wilson Co. in Albert Lea and later at the George A. Hormel Co. in Austin. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, and the Eagles and Moose Lodges in Austin. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Elouise Larson, Austin; son Larry Larson, Houston, Texas; two grandchildren David Schneider, Houston, Texas, LaVonne Pace, Houston, Texas; brother and sister-in-law Berdin and Frances Larson, Austin; sisters and brother-in-law Lila and Robert Evans, Peoria, Ariz., Bette Bedney, Peoria, Ariz; son-in-law David Schneider, Houston, Texas; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and daughter Mary Lou Schneider.

Dwain Parmenter, 54, Cottage Grove, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000 at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis from lung cancer.

He was born Oct. 17, 1945, the son of John and Esther Parmenter. He grew up and went to school at Lyle, Minn. and graduated from Austin High School in 1964. After graduation Dwain moved to the St. Paul area. He served in the military service, worked for Maxon Corporation Foundry, was self-employed, owned a restaurant in Shakopee, worked for Ed Cavenson New Home Construction and a the time of death for Cemstone.

He is survived by his wife Barb; daughter Diane Bergland and her husband Troy; two grandsons; mother Esther Parmenter, Albert Lea; brothers Robert Parmenter and wife Donna, Canfield, Ohio, Raymond and wife Julie, Albert Lea, John W. and wife Barb, Austin Randy, Albert Lea; sisters Ruth George and husband Vern, Champlin; Sarah (Sue) Camerer, Albert Lea; Vickie Underhill and husband Larry, Austin; many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Richard Sheedy, 90, 1403 Seventh Street NW, died Thursday morning, Jan. 13, 2000 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

He was born August 14, 1909 in Austin to James Henry and Mary Ann (Murphy) Sheedy. On June 30, 1937 he was united in marriage to Beatrice Louise Furtney in Austin. He was the president of Sheedy Brothers Inc. He owned and operated Sheedy's Dairy Farm with his brothers, Robert and Edward. A life long member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and St. Edward's Catholic Church, his faith, family and friends were of utmost importance to him. His sense of humor, dependability and playfulness will be dearly missed by all.

· Service: A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson, Father Hubert Boschert and Father Frank Enright officiating.

· Interment: Calvary Cemetery

· Visitation: There will be a 7 p.m. wake service on Saturday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4-8 p.m. and also from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Eva Hulet, 83, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.

She is survived by children James and Patricia Hulet, Austin, John C. and Doris Hulet, Austin, Marilyn and John Zrucky, Stewartville, Phillip and Nancy Hulet, Greenbrier, Tenn., Blanche and Steve Hollerud, Lyle; sixteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother George Boyenga, Austin; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1989, six brothers and four sisters.

· Service: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000 at Grace Baptist Church in Austin with the Rev. Gordon D. Larson officiating.

· Interment: Oakwood Cemetery

· Visitation: Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. and at the church one hour before the service.

Myra L. (Dolly) Johnson, 81, 146 Second Street SE, Blooming Prairie died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000.

She was born Dec. 23, 1918 in clear Lake, S.D. to Guy and Annetta (York) Davis. Dolly worked in Calif. at the shipyards during World War II. She was employed for over forty years by Kinsman Floral and Johnson Floral in Austin. She loved to play cards and also loved lutefisk.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Gary and Darlene Culton; Robert and Barbara Day; stepdaughter and husband, Becky and Steve Braaten; stepdaughter and husband, Becky and Steve Braaten; stepsons and wives Jack and Debbie Johnson; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister Fern Radunz; several nieces, nephews and friends.

· Service: 1:30 p.m. at Worlein Funeral Home Friday, Jan. 14, 2000 with the Rev. Harold L. Usgaard officiating.

· Interment: Private interment at Grandview Cemetery

· Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Worlein Funeral Home.
