Burt Plehal

1917-2001

Burt J. Plehal, 83, a man who wore many hats in Austin for more than 60 years, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota.

He was born April 26, 1917, in Eden Prairie to Joseph and Emily (Empenger) Plehal. Burt graduated from Hopkins High School in 1934 and the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Business in 1938. He moved to Austin in March 1939, and, except for brief periods at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Banking and military service as a major in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he resided there until his death.

Plehal began a career in business and finance at the Austin State Bank where he established the insurance department and travel service, eventually rising to become vice president. In 1966, he resigned to enter into real estate development and take a position as financial consultant, first with Dempsey-Tegler then Loewi Inc. securities and investment firms. Later, he established his own financial consulting business, and continued as a developer and an entrepreneur in the Austin area. Though successful in these endeavors, his greatest energies were directed towards helping others develop new businesses; these relationships provided Burt his greatest joy as a professional.

Throughout his 62 years in Austin, Burt gave freely to the community of his time and energy. A lifelong member of the Austin Business Men's Association, his activities included worthy causes ranging from politics to education to service organizations. Some of his community development projects included: the opening of North Main Street to commercial and residential use; attracting commercial interests to the 18th Avenue NW development area; and initiating a drive to establish a SPAM tourist center and museum. The Development Corporation of Austin named him as Entrepreneur of the Year for 1990.

Plehal was also a leader in the Paramount Theater restoration effort, assisting in the organizing and then serving as an advisor to the Board. He was a member of several other Boards including the Riverland Community College and Austin High School Foundations and was co-chair for the successful referendum for the AHS remodeling project. He spearheaded an effort to establish college student housing at Riverland Community College and was a member of the KSMQ advisory board for Public Broadcasting.

Among his other civic achievements Burt served as chairman of The Mower County Red Cross, president of the Jaycees, was chairman of the Mower County Republican Party and was a frequent delegate to state and county GOP conventions. He was a longtime member of Kiwanis and Rotary, where he held positions as treasurer, president and delegate to numerous international conventions. He was a past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a former Mason, Shriner and member of the Eagles and American Legion, and University of Minnesota Alumni Association.

Burt was an active member, elder and finance committee chairman of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin. For many years, Burt and his family were active supported of a variety of student exchange programs, hosting and advising students studying abroad under the sponsorship of American Field Service and Rotary International.

His many hobbies included golfing, boating, gardening, reading, and fishing at his summer cottage on Lake Pepin near Red Wing, collecting stamps, coins and antiques, traveling and organizing frequent family gatherings. Those who knew him well recall Burt's omnipresent enthusiasm and zest for life, evidenced by his four-page calling card. Beyond his pride in not missing a day of school or work since third grade, he was especially proud of the achievements of his sons and grandchildren.

Burt is survived by his wife of 57 years, Esther Marcusen Plehal, whom he married on May 9, 1943. In addition to Esther, he is survived by thee sons, James (Red Wing), Thomas (Cascade, Idaho) and John (Springfield, Va.), their wives Sandra, Karolyn and Gari, and six grandchildren; Burt considered four others to be his honorary sons, Peter ten Arve (The Netherlands), Mike Plaas (Phoenix), Bruce Jackson (Denver), and Mike Nelson (Austin).
