Robert Olson

1925-2001

Robert D. Olson, 75, Austin, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2001 at his home.

Robert was born May 25, 1925, in Austin to Theodore and Edna (Churchill) Olson. On July 27, 1945, he married Ruth M. Iverson. Robert was a retired businessman.

Survivors include his wife Ruth Olson, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard (Mary) Olson, Austin, Ronald (Dawn) Olson, Faribault, Rick Olson, Minneapolis, Robert E. Olson, Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary (Wayne) Wolfe, Rose Creek; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Erma Haskins, Forest City, Iowa; cousins, nieces and nephews.

He preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Floyd, Everett, Albert and George.

Service: 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Pat Toschak officiating.

Visitation: Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on today.

Interment: Fort Snelling National cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post No. 91 and VFW Post No. 1216.

The honorary casket bearers will be Richard Olson, Ron Olson, Rick Olson, Bob Olson, Jason Olson and Chad Wolfe.

Nyla Lulu (nee Bisbee) Ostroot

1907-2001

Nyla Lulu Ostroot (Bisbee), 94, retired librarian, Bloomington Public Schools, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, in Houston, Texas.

She was born Jan. 7, 1907, in Lyle the oldest of five children to Allen C. and Alma Bisbee. She graduated from Albert Lea High School and St. Olaf College, Northfield in 1929, majoring in English and education. She began her teaching career in Big Lake. In her long life she retired to Nokomis Square, Minneapolis, Brainerd and Houston, Texas. She was a l ong time member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.

She is survived by her sons and their spouses, Roger (Karen) Ostroot, Lake Ada, Pine River, John (Joan) Ostroot, Houston, Texas; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Mayo Bisbee, Pittsburgh, Pa.; sister, Helen Falk, St. Paul.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Acton and Dean Bisbee; one grandchild and her husband James Ostroot, whom she married in 1930. James Ostroot, who died in 1963, was superintendent of schools in Big Lake, Lanesboro and Granite Falls, and assistant superintendent of schools in Bloomington.

Service: A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held March 31, at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 4100 Lyndale Avenue, south, Minneapolis, Minn. 55409-1499.

Interment: City Cemetery, Canby, Minn. on April 1.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the James Ostroot Endowed Scholarship Fund, St. Olaf College, 1520 St. Olaf Avenue, Northfield, Minn. 55057-1098 or Bethlehem Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.

William J. McLaughlin

1927-2001

William J. McLaughlin, 73, of Rochester, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, of cancer at Seasons Hospice.

He was born Nov. 2, 1927, at Great Falls, Mont. He married Shirley Weeks December 14, 1951, at Spring Valley.

He lived in Rochester for the past 26 years and previously lived in Austin and Spring Valley.

He was an engineer for public schools. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post, Moose Lodge and American Legion Post.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley, Rochester; children, David and wife Donna McLaughlin, Spring Valley, Ann and husband Rodney Kvam, Austin, and Michael and wife Ronda McLaughlin, Rochester; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one son.

Service: None planned.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Macken Funeral Home, 1105 12th St. SE, Rochester.

Interment: Cremated remains will be buried in Spring Valley at a later date.

Memorials: Family's choice.

Rudolph Vogelsang

1919-2001

Rudolph 'Rudy' Vogelsang, 81, of Geneva, died Sunday, Feb. 25, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Rudolph was born April 9, 1919, to George and Reka (Hofdman) Vogelsang at the family farm at Renova. He attended school at Monitor Rural School. Rudy served in the Army from 1940 to 1945 during World War II in Company G 135th Infantry in the European and North African Theaters. On June 29, 1946, he married Cleone A. Larson. Rudy was employed as a Caterpillar bulldozer operator by Emil Olson & Sons construction for over 30 years and also for the City of Anoka. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed people, his work, his family, and especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his sons David (Judy) Dickinson, N.D., Dennis (Marlene), Clarks Grove, Steven (Kathy), Waseca, Robert, Minneapolis; daughter, Carol, Hanlontown, Iowa; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Lubke, Austin, John and Katie, Dexter, Ann and Everett Vermilyea, Dexter, Helen and Ralph Colberg, St. Cloud, Mary Halvorson, Arizona, Margaret Schrafel, Lyle, Clara Vasey, Austin, Freddie, Indiana, George, Jr., Iowa, Bernie Vogelsang, Rose Creek; many nieces and nephews.

Rudy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a brother, Henry Vogelsang.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joel Xavier officiating.

Interment: Graceland Cemetery with military honors accorded by the area servicemen's organizations.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday.

Linda Lou (nee Flink) Lageson

1936-2001

Linda Lou Lageson, 64, of Brownsdale, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at her residence.

She was born Auguat 29, 1936, at Spencer, Iowa, to Holger and Blanche Flink. She grew up in Austin and married Marvin Lageson May 23, 1959, in Austin. The couple lived in Ellendale from 1960 to 1983 and moved to Brownsdale in 1984. She was a factory worker. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchild, card games, gardening, crafts, painting and drawing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one son.

Survivors include: her husband, Marvin; three daughters, Susan (John) Madson, Glenville, Minn., Kathleen (Richard) Mead, Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Cindy (Dennis) Jensen, Austin; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, John (Shirley) Flink, Rose Creek, Minn., Harley (Jan) Flink, Rochester, Minn.; one sister, Charlene (Gene) Gerber, Austin.

Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Austin, with the Rev. Don Deines officiating and Worlein Funeral Home of Austin in charge of arrangements.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel and one hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Interment: LeSueur River Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural New Richland.

Lyle Elwin Storry

1919-2001

Lyle Elwin Storry, 81, of Austin, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

He was born July 15, 1919, at Lansing, the son of Ernest and Mabel (Montgomery) Storry. He graduated from Austin High School and was employed in the Hormel Foods Corporation construction department. He married Mary Ann Petersen Dec. 21, 1951, at Calvary Baptist Church in Albert Lea, Minn. In his retirement, he was active with the Mower County Senior Citizens.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include: wife Mary Ann Storry, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Gene (Judy) Storry, Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Priscilla Strong, St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister Shirley Gabrielson, Austin; nieces and nephews.

Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Patricia M. Toschak officiating. Organist: Ruth Monson. Flutist: Anna Strain. Casket bearers: Russell Turner, Gary Gabrielson, Dale Gabrielson, Richard Fredrickson, Mark Campana, Arden King.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery, rural Austin.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and one hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Helen (nee Chapek) Remington

1922-2001

Helen Chapek Remington, 78, of Austin, died April 27, 2001, at her home.

She was born Nov. 18, 1922, in Glenville, Minn., to Edward and Marie (Svejkovsky) Chapek. A lifelong resident of Austin, Helen was active in the church for many years and enjoyed gardening and flowers. She was very proud of her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Stanley; and daughter Annette Marie.

Survivors include: her husband, Charles Remington, Austin; son, Ray (Cheryl) Remington, Austin; daughter, LaVonne (Edward) Mathewson, Maple Grove, Minn.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

Service: At 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Austin, with the Rev. Patricia Toschak officiating and Worlein Funeral Home of Austin in charge of arrangements.

Visitation: Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and at the church an hour before the service.

Interment: Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Ursula Bissen

1921-2001

Ursula Bissen, 79, died Thursday morning, April 26, 2001, at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Rochester, Minn.

Ursula was born May 2, 1921, in Mower County, Minn., to Nicholas and Mathilda (Landherr) Bissen. She was a retiree of First Bank in St. Paul and active in the Quarter Century Club, an active volunteer and an associate editor for the Spokesman. She also was a member of the Third Order of St, Francis and the Kings House Retreat at Buffalo, Minn. Ursula was an ardent traveler and visited many foreign countries. She returned to the Orient several times. She was interested in crafts, but did not begin to oil paint until she retired.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Vernon, Donald and Wilfred.

Survivors include: sister and brother-in-law, Colleen (Robert) Satern, Austin; sisters-in-law, Georgia Bissen, Rose Creek, Minn., Mary Bissen, Rose Creek, Minn.; nieces and nephews.

Service: A funeral mass at 2 p.m. Sunday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, with Father Virgil Duellman officiating.

Visitation: There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 7 p.m. wake service on Saturday at Mayer Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials: Memorials are preferred to Lady of Good Counsel Cancer Home.

Melba A. (Jacobson) Bostrack

1920-2001

Melba A. Bostrack, 81, of Austin, died Thursday, April 26, 2001 at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born on February 19, 1920, in Peterson, Minnesota, to Magnus and Amalia Jacobson. Melba graduated from Peterson High School. She married Clifford Bostrack, Oct. 5, 1937, in LaCrosse Wis.

Melba lived most of her life in Austin, Minn., where she was a homemaker. She belonged to St. Olaf Lutheran Church and was an active member and volunteer in the Ladies Aid. She also belonged to Sons of Norway, taught Sunday school, was a Girl Scout Leader and worked at St. Mark's Lutheran home. Melba enjoyed gardening, trout fishing, cooking, music and handiwork.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Adolph.

Survivors include: husband Clifford, Austin; three daughters, Carol (Mitchell) Stethem, Minneapolis, Minn., Jane (James) Ryan, St. Charles, Minn., Kathleen (Greg) Brown, Austin; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

Service: 1:00 pm Monday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, with Rev. James Mikkelson officiating.

Visitation: From 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel and one hour before the service at the church on Monday.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Robert M. Dunn

1957-2001

Robert M. Dunn, 43, formerly of Austin, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the DVA Medical Center in Minnea-polis.

He was born June 18, 1957, in Austin, Minn., to Robert J. and Ellen (Thompson) Dunn. Robert was the owner of X-Q Concrete. He loved boating, waterskiing and his dog, Lady.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Survivors include: his parents, Robert and Ellen Dunn, Austin; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary (Cornelius) Dunn-McCarron, San Leandro, Calif., Kathy Dunn, Tucson, Ariz., Pat (Dave) Larson, Austin; aunts, Lorraine Minelli and Betty Dunn; nephews, Tom, Justin and Jeremy; great niece Kendra; and cousins.

Service: A memorial mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church, with Father Paul Nelson officiating.

Visitation: At a luncheon following the service.

Mildred Eleanor (Howells) Ferguson

1915-2001

Mildred Eleanor Ferguson, 85, of Austin, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 11, 1915, in Madison, S.D., the daughter of Lloyd and Lida (Register) Howells.

She graduated from South High School in Minneapolis in 1933 and worked for Hormel Foods Corporation from 1933 to 1938. She married Bertie Martin Ferguson on Oct. 21, 1934, in Austin. She also was employed as a bookkeeper for the Montgomery Wards Company. The couple lived in Austin, Minneapolis and Oakland, Minn., and Mason City and St. Ansgar, Iowa, before returning to Austin several years ago.

She was a member of Faith Evangelical Free Church.

Survivors include: husband Bertie M. Ferguson, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Ronald D. (Sherri) Ferguson, Tucson, Ariz., Gaylord (Sandra) Ferguson, Gainsville, Texas; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one niece; two nephews; and sisters-in-law, Gladys Howden, Austin, and Peggy Heuer, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Service: 10 a.m. Monday at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Austin, with the Rev. Chris A. Holck officiating.

Visitation: From 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and at the church Monday one hour before the service.

Interment: Enterprise Cemetery in rural Austin.

Elizabeth (nee Forbes) Dahlgren

1907-2001

Elizabeth "Liz" Martha Forbes Dahlgren, 93, died Oct. 10, 2000, at the Veterans' Hospital in Minneapolis.

She was born May 23, 1907, in LaCrosse, Wis. to Fred and Elizabeth Forbes. She graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1926 and attended teacher training at Aberdeen, S.D. She taught rural school in Grand Meadow. In the 1930s, she was employed for several years by Drs. Charles and Will Mayo. She worked as the chief stewardess on their yacht, the North Star, on the Mississippi River. In 1943, she enlisted in the first Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and was a member of the first unit of WACs sent to Eglin Field, Fla. She wrote a book titled "We Were First" about her WAC training and experiences. On June 16, 1944, while at Eglin Field, she married Frank Dahlgren.

During their lives together, Liz and Frank resided in Minneapolis, Galesville, Wis., King, Wis., Brownsville, Texas, and Grand Meadow, Minn. While in Galesville, they owned the Bevel Badge Company and Liz was also employed as a reporter for the LaCrosse Tribune, the Winona Daily and Sunday News and the Galesville Gazette. Frank died on May 23, 1985 and in 1995 Liz became a resident of the Minnesota Veterans' Home in Minneapolis.

Liz was preceded in death by: her husband; parents; two brothers, Donald and Fred; and two sisters, Harriet Davidson and Margaret Peterson of Grand Meadow.

Survivors include: nieces, Nancy (Dan) Scrabeck, Elkton, Minn., Georgia (Bob) Eastvold, LeRoy, Minn., Carolyn (Dan) Sween, Grand Meadow, Minn., Ruth Forbes Berg, Poway, Calif.; and nephews, Jared (Vicky) Peterson, Chatfield, Minn., Bill (Peg) Forbes, Anacortes, Wash., Fred (Lucy) Forbes, Tucson, Ariz., and John Forbes, Silver Springs, Md.

Service: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Grand Meadow Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Elaine Siemsen officiating.

Interment: Burial will be in the Grand Meadow Cemetery.

George H. Johnson

1919-2001

George H. Johnson, 81, of Austin, died on Good Friday, April 13, 2001.

He had been a resident of Burr Oak Manor Nursing Home since Jan. 17, 2001.

He was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Appanoose County, Iowa, to Lee and Belle (Lawson) Johnson. The family moved to the Geneva, Minn. area in 1928. George graduated from Ellendale High School in 1936. He married LaVonne Mickelson on April 8, 1941, in Ellendale. They celebrated their 60th anniversary together just five days before his passing.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Force, 331st Troop Carrier Squadron. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for service in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, among other citations and medals.

He was employed as "butter maker" creamery manager in Clarks Grove, following the war. He also served as mayor of that community. He managed creameries in Adrian, Ellendale and Adams. From 1970 to 1983, he was employed at Stauffer Chemical in Rochester. Following retirement, the couple moved to Bella Vista, Ark., where George enjoyed part-time work at the Metfield Country Club. Returning to the area in 1988, he worked part-time at Nicol's Texaco Station until 1966. He was active in community activities and fraternal organizations for many years and was a life-long church member.

He spent time fishing with friends and family on the lakes of Northern Minnesota and Canada. In year past he was a huntsman and enjoyed golfing and traveling. LaVonne and he loved to dance together. Though he had no musical training, he loved to sing and play the harmonica.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Survivors include: wife LaVonne, two daughters and sons-in-law, Sally (John) Clapp, Iowa City, Iowa, LuAnn (Richard) Pacholke, Shakopee, Minn.; three grandsons, Brian (Tracy) Clapp or Coralville, Iowa, Jason (Marey) Clapp, Dallas, Texas, Frederick Pacholke, Richfield, Minn.; two great-grandchildren; sister, Ellen Grunwald, Owatonna, Minn.; brother, Lee (Jean) Johnson, Ellendale, Minn.; sister-in-law, Katheran Johnson, Austin; brother-in-law, Jerry (Avis) Mickelson, Clarks Grove; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service: Services were held on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin, with Rev. Harold Deye officiating. Arrangements were made by Clasen-Jordan Funeral Home of Austin.

Interment: Private family burial will be at a later date at the Clarks Grove Cemetery, Clarks Grove, Minn.

Eugene F. Tschida

1919-2001

Eugene F. Tschida, 81, of Austin, died early Saturday morning, April 21, 2001, at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.

He was born in Holdingford, Minn. on Dec. 29, 1919, to Michael and Frances (Patrias) Tschida. He was the second oldest of 13 children.

In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as a flight engineer on B-17 and B-24 bombers. He traveled all over the world, ferrying new aircraft. He received five medals for his meritorious duty during the war. While stationed at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., he met his future wife, Caroline Stadnick of St. Louis. They were married on June 24, 1944, in Detroit, Mich. He was honorably discharged in 1946, after the war, and worked various jobs, including a street car motorman in St. Paul, Minn. In 1952, he began 29 years of employment with Hormel Foods Corporation.

In his earlier years, he enjoyed traveling, family camping trips, gardening and dancing to old-time music. He enjoyed long daily walks with his dog. He was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church and was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Eugene Michael.

Claude A. Bump

1916-2001

Claude A. Bump, 84, of Austin, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Adams Health Care Center.

He was born June 24, 1916, in Austin, to Bertram and Kathryn (Kempfert) Bump. Claude's childhood and teenage years were spent in the London and Cedar City areas, where the family farmed. He attended the London and Cedar City school and graduated from Austin High School in 1934. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Zumbrota. He worked at Hormel Food Company before entering the service and upon returning worked for them for a total of 42 years.

Claude married Lucille Bruggemann on June 1, 1947 at St. Johns Lutheran Parsonage, by the Rev. W.F. Milbrath. They were married for 53 years. In October of that year he was baptized and confirmed. He was godfather to Michael Kraak, Chicago, Ill., and Vincent Anthony Matson, Austin.

Since 1975, he started attending reunions for the 91st division, Companies 361, 363 and F. Since 1977, he enjoyed wintering in Arizona.

Claude served in the United States Army from August 1942 to Nov. 15, 1945. He was a soldier of the 91st Infantry Division in Africa and Italy. He was wounded on Oct. 5, 1944, near the town of Pesia. He spent 13 months in different hospitals recuperating and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Campaign Star, Victory Medal, Good Conduct, American Theater Ribbon and European-African Mediterranean Eastern Ribbon.

He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and the American Legion Austin Post No. 91, a lifetime member of Olaf B. Damm VFW Post No. 1216 and Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond Bump and Lyman Bump; and sister, Irene Beeman.

Survivors include: wife, Lucille Bump, Austin; nieces and nephews, Kathryn Cardel, Austin, Charles Beeman, Florida, Adalia (Harold) Silbaugh, Lyle, Ronald (Josie) Beeman, England, Susan Chase, Wisconsin.

Service: 2 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Harold L. Usgaard officiating. Casket bearers: Martin T. Ehmke, Emery "Bud" Thompson, Gary D. Nordland, Keith R. Jacobson, Frank "Tony" Matson, Robert Dibble and Robert Schroeder. Honorary casket bearers: Michael Kraak, Lowell R. Moen, Dr. M. Taufic, Willie Bottin, Harold Holst, J.B. Crandall, Ewald Ehlke and Kenneth Hemann.

Visitation: At Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 4 to 8 p.m. on today and on Wednesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church for one hour before the service at the church.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery in Austin, with American Legion Post No 91 of Austin, Olaf B. Damm VFW Post No. 1216 and Disabled American Veterans in charge of military rites.

James B. Carter

c1941-2001

James B. Carter, 59, died at his home with family.

He was a native of Iowa and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from the University of North Dakota and was a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church and a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include: his wife, Mary Grace Carter; son and daughter-in-law, Michael (Karen) Carter, Columbus, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Kari Michelle (Steve) Wygal, Salem, Va.; 4 grandchildren.

Service: Held Monday, April 23, 2001, at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church in Roanoke, Va., with funeral arrangements by Oakley South Chapel, Roanoke, Va.

Interment: Private entombment at St. Andrew's Diocese Cemetery.

Archie Irmiter

1915-2001

Archie Edwin Irmiter, 85, of Blooming Prairie, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at his home in Punta Gorda, Fla.

He was born April 28, 1915, at Lewisville, the son of John and Ida (Ogee) Irmiter. He was married to Helen Christensen on Nov. 14, 1949, in Dodge Center. He was a farmer and operated a road construction business. They resided in Corning, where they also operated the grocery store. In retirement, the Irmiters moved to Blooming Prairie and wintered in Punta Gorda, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife and one brother.

Survivors include: his sister, Elizabeth Jones, Dodge Center; half-brother, Glenn Wasser, Rochester; four nieces; and one nephew.

Services: Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, with a luncheon following at the Holiday Inn.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.

Donald L. Jacobson

1925-2001

Donald L. Jacobson, age 75, of Longmont, Colorado, died at his home on Friday, April 20, 2001, of cancer.

He was born Sept. 12, 1925, at Huxley, Iowa, to Arndt M. and Alice M. (Barsness) Jacobson. He attended schools in Zumbrota, Minn. and then served in the U.S. Army, during World War II in the CBI Theatre, as a member of the MARS Task Force. He married Dona M. Shell Nov. 5, 1949. The couple lived and raised their family in Austin, where he worked for 30 years as a carpenter for Hormel Foods Corporation. The couple moved to Colorado in 1973, where he later became a real estate worker in 1977.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Loyal Order of Moose, both of Longmont, Colo. He enjoyed woodworking, handy work around his home and neighborhood, and joking and spending time with his family.

Survivors include: his wife, Dona, Longmont, Colo.; his mother, Alice Schwartz, Austin; daughter, Cindy (Stan) Lindquist, Blooming Prairie; 3 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father; a son, Lynn O. Jacobson; one sister, Arlene Lee; and one brother, Sherill O. Jacobson.

Service: A memorial service at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Longmont, Colo., with the Rev. Granville Smyth officiating. A memorial service will be held in Blooming Prairie and announced at a later date.

Visitation: None scheduled.

Interment: Cremation has been held at Howe Mortuary and Crematory, Longmont, Colo.

Milo James Hyland

1925-2001

Milo James Hyland, 76, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester.

He was born February 23, 1925, in Austin, to Jens and Esther (Smith) Hyland. He attended Austin High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in the sea bees Sept. 17, 1943, and served until March 18, 1946. After World War II, he worked as a carpenter in Rochester and married Helen Beilke January 19, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Rochester. After marriage, he began working at Hormel Foods Corporation as a truck driver until retirement in 1981.

He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran, Church, American Legion Post No. 91 and Austin Eagles Aerie No. 703 for over 50 years. His hobbies included selling items at flea markets and selling bent glass for china cabinets. He also drove stock cars when he was younger and enjoyed fishing, hunting, vacationing at his Longville area cabin, trips to the Boundary Waters and family and grandchildren.

Survivors include: his wife, Helen Hyland, Austin; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra (Mike) Nelson, Rochester, Beverly (James) Steuck, Lake Crystal, Pamela Howden, Austin; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Irene) Hyland, Austin, Myron (Ernestine) Hyland, Owatonna; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty (Vernon) Vold, Lake Mills, Iowa, Esther (Arleigh) Anthonisen, Austin; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Zerelda Ann (Smith) Howe

1905-2001

Zerelda Ann Howe, age 96, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

She was born January 6, 1905, in Austin to Matthew and Katheryn (Schumacker) Smith. She married Darwin I. Howe July 3, 1928, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 7, 1981. She was a homemaker, mother and former beautician.

Survivors include: her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth (Carole) Howe, Austin; a daughter, Sr. Cynthia "Kathleen" Howe, Rochester; 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and seven brothers.

Service: A funeral mass 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Austin, with the Revs. Paul Nelson and Frank Enright officiating. Honorary casket bearers: John Howe, Susan Howe, Al Smith Jr., Richard Cashman and Kenneth Welken.

Visitation: 4 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Mayer Funeral Home, where a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake service will also be held and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

DIED IN AUSTIN

James M. Koster, 37, of Blooming Prairie, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born March 17, 1964, to Ronald M. and Judy K. (Kruckeberg) Koster in Frankfurt, Germany. James graduated from Austin High School in 1982 and from Austin Vocational School in 1984. He married Jolynn Marie Wobbrock on September 28, 1985. Employers included King Company in Owatonna for fifteen years and Lou Rich in Albert Lea more recently.

A Minnesota Vikings fan, James' hobbies included fishing, NASCAR racing and playing sports with his children.

Survivors include: his wife, Jolynn, Blooming Prairie; son, Zachary Koster; daughter, Lauren Koster; mother and stepfather, Judy and William Nygren, Austin; sister, Kimberly Bakken, Austin; brother, Jeffery Koster, Portland, Ore.; grandparents, Herman and Harriet Kruckeberg, Blooming Prairie, Marge and Al Michaelson, Brownsdale; uncle and aunt, Rod and Tess Koster, Blooming Prairie; many brothers and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Thelma Wobbrock, Austin. Donald Nihart Sr.

1917-2001

Donald Nihart Sr., 84, of Austin, died Monday evening, April 16, 2001, at his home.

Don was born January 25, 1917, to Lawrence and Etta (Krumpel) Nihart in Wolf Point, Mont. On July 22, 1961, he married Judy Goodew in Austin. He was a retired employee of Hormel Foods Corporation, worked in construction and owned Don's Woodworking and Hydraulic Repair.

Don loved fishing, hunting, camping and western movies.

Frederic Walter Siewert Sr.

1919-2001

DIED IN GRAND MEADOW, MOWER COUNTY, MINNESOTA

Frederic Walter Siewert Sr., 81, of Elkton, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Meadow Manor Nursing Home, Grand Meadow.

He was born April 23, 1919, in Elkton, to Paul and Louise (Nagele) Siewert. He attended Elkton grade school and then farmed and worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad Company until he retired in 1977. He married Louise Lane on August 31, 1951 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Austin. In his retirement, he and his wife Louise traveled around the country.

His hobbies were collecting gas engine tractors, attending threshing shows and auctions. He enjoyed his family and grandchildren.

Virginia "Jean" Baumann, 73 of Austin, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at her home.

She was born May 3, 1927, at Lake Church, Wis., to Nicholas and Jeannette Tholl. She married William E. Baumann at St. Mary's Church, Lake Church, Wis., on Nov. 27, 1947.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed her family and golf.

Survivors include her husband, William E., Austin; six sons, William (Diane) Baumann, Reno, Nev., Michael (Myrna) Baumann, Crystal Beach, Fla., Robert Baumann and Bill Sherfy, Minneapolis, Mark (Jolene) Baumann, Reno, Nev., James (Diane) Baumann, Charlotte, N.C., Nick (Kate) Baumann, St. Paul; four daughters, Suzan (Joe) Cole, Austin, Karen (Marty) Spicer, Minneapolis, Jeanne (Brendhan) Wagner, Austin, JoAnn (Paul) Spangler, Two Rivers, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; and a sister, Vera Clausing, Port Washington, Wis.

Mildred Lucille (Thompson) Harris

1915-2001

Mildred Lucille Harris, 85, of Farmington and formerly of Austin, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Trinity Care Center.

She was born August 2, 1915, in Steele County to Andrew and Malina (Nelson) Thompson. She graduated from Owatonna High School and married Harold E. Harris in Austin on November 25, 1936. He preceded her in death in 1972. She was a resident of Austin since 1936 and a long-time member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Survivors include: two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia (James) Carroll, Cloquet, Mary Beth (A. Charles) Arett, Minong, Wis.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert (Ruth) Harris, Austin, William (Rosemary) Harris, Rosemount, and Thomas (Rebecca) Harris, Dodge Center; 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; one sister, Verna Coughlin, LaCrosse, Wis.; and nieces and nephews.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Austin, with the Revs. Virgil Duellman and Paul Nelson officiating. Casket bearers: Bryan Harris, Scott Harris, Tim Carroll, Natalie Harris, Jason Hoerter and David Harris. Honorary casket bearers: all other grandchildren.

Vera McMahon

Vera McMahon, 85, of Austin, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center.

Vera was born March 22, 1916, to Alvin and Margaret (Neal) McMahon. She was an employee of Hormel Foods Corporation and a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister.

Service: A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at Mayer Funeral Home, with Father Paul Nelson officiating.

Visitation: There will be a 7 p.m. rosary, with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home. Visitation also will be held for one hour before the service on Friday.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery.

Bernadette E. Steffes

1915-2001

Bernadette E. Steffes, age 85, of Rochester, Minnesota, died April 15, 2001, at Madonna Towers Nursing Care Center in Rochester.

She was born on July 4, 1915 in Rollingstone, to John and Anne Steffes. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School and Winona State College, where she received a BA degree. She received an MA degree from the University of Minnesota and continued her graduate studies at the University of Colorado. Her teaching experience over 40 years included schools in Spring Valley and Redwood Falls. She was principal at the Ramsey School in Albert Lea and Sumner School in Austin. She retired in 1980 and moved to Madonna Towers in Rochester, to be closer to her brothers and many friends.

For many years she was very active in the Methodist Hospital Auxiliary and did volunteer work for the Mayo Clinic. At Madonna Towers, she served on many resident committees.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anne Steffes, and by brothers, Arnold, Bernard and Edward.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Service: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Madonna Towers Chapel in Rochester.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service.

Interment: Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in Rollingstone.

Laura Annette Green

1917-2001

FORMER MOWER COUNTY RESIDENT

Laura Annette Green, 83, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Trinity Medical Center in Carrollton, Texas.

Laura was born on November 11, 1917, in Rhame, N.D. She spent her childhood living in Forestville, Grand Meadow, and Austin, where she attended high school.

She married Clifford Green, July 4, 1936. She and her husband farmed in the Brownsdale, Rochester and Long Prairie areas. She had recently made her home in Kasson, where she enjoyed the friendship of many neighbors in the building where she resided. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in Kasson.

She is survived by: daughter, Venita (George) Jensen, Lewisville, Texas; son, James (Cleo) Green, Hot Springs, Ariz.; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Murel (Ed) Gransee, Phoenix, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford; four sisters; and one brother.

Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Kasson, with the Rev. John Conklin officiating.

Interment: Greenwood Cemetery in Brownsdale.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

Mary McDermott, 74 of Austin, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born June 23, 1926, at Bellechester, Minn., to Mathias and Elizabeth (Hofschulte) Weinmann. She married Lester C. Majerus October 15, 1046. On November 23, 1973, she married James B. McDermott. She was a homemaker.

Darlene Lily (Ludwig) Nelson

1934-2001

Darlene Lily Nelson, 66, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at her home.

Darlene was born Aug. 1, 1934, in Waltham Township, the son of Hubert and Lily (Wutschke) Ludwig. She graduated from Austin High School in 1952, and was married to Wallace Frank Nelson on Nov. 23, 1952, at Brownsdale. She was a retired educator at the Cedar Valley Rehabilitation Center and food service worker at the Austin Community College. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Hayfield. She was an avid traveler and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by: her children and their spouses, Mike (Val) Nelson, Hayfield, Gloria (Merlin) Christenson, Fort Collins, Colo., Dan Nelson, Fort Collins, Colo., David (Kathy) Nelson, Brownsdale, Deanna Nelson, Fort Collins, Colo.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; mother, Lily Nelson, Austin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger (Edna) Ludwig, Austin, Jim (Diana) Ludwig, Golden, Colo., Larry (Annette) Ludwig, Hernando, Fla., Merrill (Barb) Ludwig, Fort Collins, Colo., sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Delores and Vern Davis, Austin, Shirley and Roland Haase, Owatonna, Everett Nelson, Austin; nieces, nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and father.

Service: 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, with the Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating. Organist will be Neal Erickson, soloist will be Pat Hulet.

Interment: Greenwood Cemetery in Brownsdale. Honorary bearers Lindsey Nelson, Brittany Nelson, Mindy Christienson. Casket bearers Lee Nelson, Jesse Nelson, Brandon Christenson, Kyle Nelson, Jason Nelson, Trevor Christenson.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and on Tuesday for one hour before the service at the church.

Peter Jensen

1911-2001

Peter "Oluf" Jensen, 90, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital.

He was born March 5, 1911, in Tostrup, Denmark. He emigrated to Dodge County in 1929 and worked in the area. He married Ruth N. Anderson Aug. 28, 1936, in Kasson.

Peter served in the Navy during WW II, in the South Pacific.

He lived in Austin for 61 years. He worked for Hormel for 37 years as a general laborer and was a member of Grace Baptist in Austin and First Baptist in Kasson. He was also a member of the Austin VFW.

Peter is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Fogdall, Boise, Idaho; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Service: 1 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Kasson, with Pastor Gordon Larson of Grace Baptist Church of Austin officiating.

Interment: Evergreen Cemetery, Mantorville.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. at Dibble Funeral Home in Kasson Thursday and one hour at the church prior to the service.

James David Besco

1953-2001

James David Besco, age 48, of Austin, Minnesota, and formerly of Ottumwa, Iowa, died April 2, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.

He was born Jan. 11, 1953, in Ottumwa, to James and Ione Hampshire Besco.

A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1971 and of Indian Hills Community College, he served in the Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. He worked for Hormel in Ottumwa, then transferred to Austin in 1988. After 22 years with the company, he retired. He was a member of Davis Street Christian Church, O.B. Nelson Post 3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

James is survived by his mother of Ottumwa; and a sister, Teletha Guiter of Sigourney.

He was preceded in death by his father.

His body was cremated.

Graveside services were held Saturday at Shaul Cemetery where the Rev. Dan French of Davis Street Christian Church officiated. Military services were conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post 3 American Legion.

The family met friends at the Reece Funeral Home on Friday.

Memorials may be made to Indigent Fund for Veterans, Knoxville; Walter B. Schafer Post 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars; or O.B. Nelson Post 3 American Legion Firing Squad.

Archie G. Roe

1902-2001

Archie G. Roe, 99, of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota, and formerly of LeRoy, died Sunday, April 9, 2001, at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born March 14, 1902, near LeRoy, to Axel Roe and Anna Jondall Roe. He was baptized and confirmed in the West LeRoy Lutheran Church and attended country schools near their home farm. On December 26, 1928, he was married to Orena Dahle in Osage, Iowa by Rev. O.C. Myrhe. Archie farmed with his father and brother Conrad in the LeRoy area for many years. He was a member of the West LeRoy Lutheran Church until the merger with LeRoy Lutheran Church. He served as trustee on the church board and on the fundraising committee for the new church. In 1968, Archie and Orena moved into Leroy, and in May of 1997, they moved to the Cedar Court Apartment in Adams.

Archie is survived by son, Milo (Joan) Roe, LeRoy; daughters, LaVonne (David) Gilderhus, Adams, Eleanor (Roger) Ault, Lake In The Hills, Ill.; eight grandchildren; sister-in-law, Nellie Roe, Hayfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers, Art, Ottis, Theodore and Conrad; and one sister, Alma.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the LeRoy Evangelical Lutheran Church in LeRoy, with the Rev. Thomas Kolden officiating. The soloist will be Edward Dahl and the organist will be June Torrison.

Interment: LeRoy Lutheran Cemetery. Casket bearers are grandchildren, Mark and Jon Ault, Brian, Russell and Rick Roe, Gary Gilderhus, Cindy Bellrichard and Brenda Landherr.

Visitation: From 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in LeRoy and one hour prior at the church on Wednesday.
