Gretta Lorraine (nee Hessenius) Reding1907-2001
Gretta Lorraine Reding, 93, of Austin, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at
Austin Medical Center.
She was born May 19, 1907, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Ned E. and Alice
(Voogd) Hessenius.
Gretta and her family moved to Brownsdale in 1920. She graduated from
Austin Central High School in 1925. She attended the University of Minnesota
for two years then came back to Brownsdale to work with her father at
Brownsdale State Bank. Gretta retired from the bank in 1968. She married
Edward Reding on Nov. 10, 1948, in Grand Meadow. She and her husband
enjoyed traveling and going up north to fish and relax.
Gretta was a member of Brownsdale United Methodist Church and was very
involved with church activities including the ladies aid and church circles.
She also belonged to the Hayfield American Legion Auxiliary. She was an
avid reader and had a good sense of humor. She enjoyed spending time with
her family and friends especially around the holidays.
She is survived by brothers and sister-in-law, Richard Hessenius,
Adams, Edward (Margarite) Hessenius, Siloam Springs, Ark.; brother-in-law
and sister-in-law, Leo and Marion Reding, Austin; many nieces, nephews,
and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Edward Reding and
sister, Pauline Hessenius.
Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brownsdale United Methodist Church with
the Rev. Donald D. Budd officiating.
Interment: Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and at
Brownsdale United Methodist Church for one hour before the service at
the church on Tuesday.

Katie L. (nee Smalley)(Wolff) Winer1901-2001
SURNAMES: SMALLEY, WOLFF, WINER
Katie L. Winer, 99, of Mankato, Minnesota, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001,
at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato.
She was born on Aug. 11, 1901, in Mitchell County, Iowa, to Chester and
Mary (Johnson) Smalley. Katie graduated from Osage High School and went to
teachers college. She taught country school near New Haven, Iowa.
Katie married Morse Wolff on June 18, 1924, in Iowa. They later moved to
Minnesota and lived on a farm. Morse died in 1955. Katie then married Irving
Winer in 1959 and she moved to his farm near McIntire, Iowa. Irving died in
June 1961 and she later moved back to Austin.
She belonged to First United Methodist Church, which she was very active
with. She liked playing cards and gardening.
Survivors include a son, Gordon Wolff, Adams; a daughter and son-in-law,
Joan and Rolland Stoll, Mankato; seven grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Melbourne and Frances
Smalley, Osage, Iowa, Ralph and Irene Smalley, Des Moines, Iowa, Helen
Smalley, Osage, Dorothy Smalley, Osage; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Morse Wolff; her second
husband, Irving Winer; four brothers and two sisters.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Clasen-Jordan Chapel with the Rev. Bruce
Kronen officiating.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery
Visitation: An hour before the service Monday at the chapel of
Clasen-Jordan Mortuary.
Casket bearers: Allan Smalley, David Smalley, Greg Penny, Steve Dammen,
Russell Smalley; honorary bearers: Doug Smalley, Darrell Smalley, Kevin

Harry Hook1916-2001
Harry Hook, 84, of Austin, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Woodlyn Nursing
Home in Inver Grove Heights.
Harry was born on Dec. 9, 1916, in Pleasant Valley, Iowa. His mother,
Susan, died when Harry was young. The family moved to Waltham, and later
to Brownsdale. Harry assisted his father, Rudolph, with farming and cattle
drives.
Harry moved to Austin and, at age 15, took a position with Hormel. He was
employed by Hormel for 44 years, and served as a foreman for many years
prior to his retirement in early 1977.
Harry met his future bride, Dorothy Coddington, in 1936. They were
engaged at Christmas 1938, and married on Sept. 2, 1940, at First Baptist
Church in Austin. They attended First Baptist and later Grace Baptist Church
of Austin.
Harry accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in the late 1950s. He
later served his Lord in many ways. During his time as a member of Grace
Baptist, Harry served as deacon (and, for a period, as chairman of the
board of deacons); as a director of the church's AWANA program for children;
and assisted with Grace's jail, bus and prayer ministries. For many years,
Harry was a member of a committee that sponsored evangelistic events at the
Mower County Fair. He also was a Gideon, and once smuggled Bibles into East
Germany.
Harry also was involved in his community in other ways. He served as
president of the Sumner Elementary School PTA, an auxiliary deputy sheriff
and a city fire commissioner.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Hook; a sister, Gazeena McCloughan;
children, David Hook, Pamela Hook Mayfield and Sue Deck; eight grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Susan Hook, a
sister, Anne Heimsness, and a brother, Henry Hook.
Service: Was at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church with Gordon
D. Larson officiating.
Interment: Grandview Cemetery
Visitation: Was from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with
the reviewal an hour before the service.

Frederick James Murphy 1926-2001
Frederick James Murphy, 74, of Austin, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001,
at Austin Medical Center.
Fred was born April 1, 1926, to James and Agnes (Hartman) Murphy in
Blue Earth. When he was about 6 years old, he and his family moved to
Austin. He attended school and then joined the Navy in 1944 when he was
17 years old. He fought in the battle of Okinawa in World War II as a
fleet marineer.
He came back to Austin and worked for Mix Cleaners for a while. He
married Carmen Burfeind on Nov. 24, 1951, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church
in LaValle, Wis. Fred also had worked for Austin Dairy, he drove a city
bus for Austin, and worked at Marsden Janitorial Services. Fred was the
custodian for about 16 years at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Austin
and he retired from there in 1988. He was a member of Our Saviors
Lutheran Church and American Legion Post No. 91 of Austin.
He is survived by his wife Carmen, Austin; daughters and sons-in-law,
Sharon (Jay) Stromme, Casco, Wis., Jan (Brian) Sorenson, Austin, Mary
(Bob) Shada, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Dana (Laura) Murphy,
Cheney, Wash., and Randy (Lori) Murphy, Austin; 11 grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Leo (Marilyn) Murphy,
Sacramento, Calif.; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Margaret Riley.
Service: 11 a.m. Monday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
Interment: Grandview Cemetery
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and on Monday
for one hour before the service at the church.

Myrtle L. (nee Miller) Nygaard1907-2001
Myrtle L. Nygaard, 93, of Austin, died Thursday evening, Jan. 18, 2001,
at Austin Medical Center.
Myrtle was born Dec. 9, 1907 in Corning, Minn., to Lewis C. and Mary
(Boe) Miller. She married Severt E. Nygaard in 1940. They had a son,
Stephen.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. George (Rena) Lickteig, Austin,
Mrs. Roger (Dorothy) Matter, Apple Valley, Mrs. Leonard (Betty) Hacker,
New Richland; sisters-in-law, Viola Miller, Austin, Mrs. Newman (Myrtle)
Tesdahl, Austin, Ruth Borchardt, Austin; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces
and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and son; four brothers, Orris,
Leon, Ervin and Donald; a sister, Cora; four half-sisters, Gina, Clara,
Tilla and Laura; and a half-brother, Herman.
Service: 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Stephen
Kurtzahn officiating.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today at Mayer Funeral Home and an hour before
the service at the church on Monday.

Ricky K. Nash1955-2001
#1:
Ricky K. Nash, 45, of Millville, Minn., died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at
his home.
He was born March 4, 1955, in Wabasha, Minn. Rick graduated from Austin
High School in 1973 and attended vocational school in Rochester.
Rick worked at Crenlo in Rochester, Lakeside Foods in Plainview and
Wescott Orchard of Elgin. He also had a photography studio in Elgin. He
lived in the Plainview area for 27 years and worked mostly as a
self-employed painter.
He enjoyed all sports and coached girls softball for several years. He
also enjoyed camping and photography.
He had a special friend, Amanda Eversman of Plainview.
Surviving are his father and stepmother, Kenneth and Rosella Nash of
Austin; his mother, Frances Nash of Austin; three brothers, Gary (Jayne)
Nash, Scott (Darlene) Nash and Randy Nash, all of Austin; two sisters, Jan
(Dennis) Harmer and Joanne (Brent) Crump of Austin; a stepsister, Joy (Ron)
Louthers; and two stepbrothers, Mike and Steve Hall.
Service: 11 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plainview with the
Revs. William Natzke and David Frederickson co-officiating.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Austin

Ricky K. Nash, age 45, of rural Millville, died Thursday, January
18, 2001, at his home.

Mary M. "Meg" (nee Hemmen) Hemann 1927-2001
Mary M. "Meg" Hemann, 73, Austin, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at the
Austin Medical Center.
Meg was born Feb. 12, 1927, in Dubuque, Iowa to Heye and Nell (Baldwin)
Hemmen. On April 25, 1946, she married Kenneth C. Hemann at St. Augustine
Catholic Church in Austin. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Hemann, Austin; daughter and
son-in-law, Judith and Charles Von Feldt, Elko; three grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; sisters-in-law, Joyce Mallory, Austin, Muriel (David)
Wagner, Austin.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her mother-in-law and
father-in-law, William and Ina Hemann.
Service: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday
at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson and Father Frank
Enright officiating.
Visitation: There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake
service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home; visitation from 4 to 8 p.m.
and also from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery. The casket bearers will be Chuck Von
Feldt, Jeff Von Feldt, Ken Jensen, Terry Wagner, Tim Wagner and Cliff
Gorman.
Memorials are preferred to St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Erhart Emil Penning1904-2001
Erhart Emil Penning, 96, of Lyle, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2001, at St.
Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin where he had been a resident for a little
over two years.
He was born April 5, 1904, the third sibling of Peter and Augusta (Weber)
Penning, on a farm near the old town of Deer Creek. Most of Erhart's early
years were spent on the family farm. On Dec. 24, 1929, he and Hazel Hansen
were married by Pastor Bondo at the Danish Church in Myrtle. They farmed
for over 60 years together before Hazel's death on July 25, 1999. Erhart
held various offices at Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church where he was a
member. He was an election judge and served on the Pinehurst School Board
and as Nevada Township Treasurer.
Erhart is survived by three sons, Elroy "Rocky" (Lois) Penning, Austin,
Maynard (Lorraine) Penning, Grand Rapids, Michigan, David (Lois) Penning,
Groveland, Calif.; eight grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; several
great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie Martin of Onamia; sister-in-law, Bernata
Hansen of Albert Lea; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers, Arnold,
Benhardt and Ervin; sisters, Martha Wolff and Alma Olson.
Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, rural Lyle
with the Rev. Russell Wangen officiating. Rick and Mark Penning are
vocalists, accompanied by Matt Penning on the organ.
Visitation: At Worlein Funeral Home Thursday from 4 8 p.m. and at
the church one hour before the service on Friday.
Interment: Six Mile Grove Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lyle, with casket
bearers Rick, Mark and Kevin Penning; Richard Anderson; Ronald Hansen;
and Tony Mudra. Honorary bearers are Matt , Kent and Karen Penning and
Sarah Penning-Lindman.

Gladys M. (nee Brechtel) Berg1913-2001
Gladys M. Berg, 87, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Monday, January 15,
2001, at the Austin Medical Center.
Gladys was born April 9, 1913, in Red Rock Township to Anton Nikolaus
and Anna Katharine (Kurzhals) Brechtel. On Nov. 26, 1930, she married
Philip Berg in Austin. He preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1981. Gladys
worked as a cook in several restaurants and was owner and operator of the
Railway Cafe.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Marion (Joe) Srp, Austin,
Evelyn (Kenneth) Heimer, Austin; sons and daughter-in-law, Richard Berg,
Austin, Darrell (Rose) Berg, Austin; 16 grandchildren;
28 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Ardyce
Brechtel, Austin; nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and two brothers.
Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Rev. James I.
Mikkelson officiating.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before
the service at the church on Saturday.

Laurie-Ann Myhre-Choate
Laurie-Ann Myhre-Choate, 42, formerly of Austin, Mower county,
Minnesota, died Friday.
Survivors include husband, Dannie; daughter, Alexandria; parents,
William Myhre and Gloria (Harold) Hyland; brothers, Greg Myhre and Cory
Myhre; sister, Susan (Steve) Rutherford; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in Naperville, Illinois, on January 17, 2001.
Private graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.

Jerold Martin Lee1903-2001
Jerold Martin Lee, 97, died Sunday, January 14, 2001, at St. Mark's
Lutheran Home in Austin, Minnesota.
Jerold was born May 24, 1903, the son of Martin and Josephine (Throndsen)
Lee in Vernon Township, Dodge County. He attended school in Vernon Township.
On Feb. 22, 1927, he married to Ruby Lee, in Hayfield. The couple then
farmed in Mower County. Jerold was a member of Evanger Lutheran Church
and has been a resident of St. Mark's Lutheran Home for the past seven
years. He enjoyed music, farming, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren,
and great-great-grandchildren. Jerold also played with a fiddler jamboree
group.
Jerold is survived by his wife, Ruby Lee, Austin; daughters, Eunice
Boysen, Austin, Mavis (Donald) Odegard, Seattle, Wash.; sons, Erling
(Lucille) Lee, Zumbro Falls, Delmar (Danielle) Lee, Glendale, Calif.;
Don (Judy) Lee, Kasson; and foster sister, Josephine Hyland, Spring
Valley; 24 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and
11 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; foster parents; son, Merlin
Lee; infant son, Jerold Jr.; infant daughter, Marlene Jean Lee; brother,
Mark Lee; sister, Mabelle Lee; granddaughter; and great-grandson.
Service: 1:30 p.m. Friday, at Evanger Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul
Hauschild officiating. Organist Karen Skow; special music by Shermona
Simonson and Cecil Fossum.
Interment: Evanger Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers are Dennis Boysen,
Jeffrey Lee, Ricky Lee, Michael Lee, Bradley Lee, Thomas Odegard.

Gerald J. Weinmann 1932-2001
Gerald J. Weinmann, 68, Austin, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at
St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
Gerald was born June 23, 1932 in Bellechester, to Mathias and Mary
Elizabeth (Hofschulte) Weinmann. He attended St. Augustine High School
in Austin and then served in the Navy from 1950-1954. He married to
Lucille M. Beckel on Nov. 6, 1954, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church
in Austin. She preceded him in death on Sept. 5, 1982. He then married
Barbara (Tapager) Tracy on Aug. 26, 1988, in Austin.
He was a U.S. Postal Carrier and manager at the Eagles Aerie No. 703
and continued his involvement with the Eagles Club until his death. He
will be remembered for his one liners and entertaining wit.
Survivors include his wife Barbara Weinmann, Austin; sons and
daughters-in-law, Robert (Barb) Weinmann, Stewartville, Leland (Janice)
Weinmann, Rochester, Michael (Shelly) Weinmann, Austin, Earl Weinmann,
Northfield, Timothy (Kerry) Weinmann, Austin; daughters and sons-in-law,
Janet (Dan) Goldman, Austin, Mary (Gene) Moffatt, Council Bluffs, Iowa,
Joanne (Joe) Baldus, Austin, Shirley (Jim) Marx, Austin, Amy Weinmann,
Austin; 14 grandchildren; 15 stepgrandchildren; three stepsons, and a
daughter-in-law, Robert (Michelle) Tracey, Red Wing, James Tracy, Fla.,

St. Augustine Catholic Church.
Visitation: Friends called from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and there was
a 7 p.m. Eagle's Ritual at Mayer Funeral Home and also from 9 to 10 a.m.
Wednesday.
Interment: Grandview Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion
Post No. 91. Honorary casket bearer was Bob Bartholemew. Casket bearers
were Dan Clayton, Mike Kilby, Tim Ball, Dick Brekke, Dave Majerus and
Randy Jorgenson.

Beverly Ann (Hinkson) Johnson 1935-2001
Beverly Ann Johnson, 65, Austin died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.
She was born August 16, 1935, in Austin, to Richard and Mildred (Briggs)
Hinkson. Beverly attended Austin High School. She married Willis Paul Johnson
on Feb. 23, 1952, in Austin. Together they lived in Alaska for 31 years and
then moved back to Austin in 1994. She was an avid bingo player and she
like fishing and gardening. She was also a member of the Senior Citizen
Center.
She is survived by husband Willis Johnson, Austin; son, Steven Johnson,
North Branch; mother, Mildred I. Hinkson, Austin; sister and brother-in-law,
Colleen and Donald Percival, Austin; nieces and nephews.
Service: A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at
Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Harold L. Usgaard officiating.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery
Visitation: One hour before the service.
There will be no reviewal.

Kathryn J. (nee Dentinger) Madson1917-2001
Kathryn J. Madson, 83, Austin, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at St. Mark's
Lutheran Home in Austin.
She was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Mankato to Joseph and Mary (Munger)
Dentinger. Kathryn graduated from high school. She married Howard Madson on
April 2, 1939, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Kathryn was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and the BPO Does (Elks)
She is survived by son, Thomas Madson, Rochester; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Darvin Anderson, Austin; one grandson; brother and sister-in-law; Stan and Cleone Dentinger, Duluth, many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Howard N. Madson, seven brothers
and three sisters.
Service: 11 a.m. Friday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. James
I. Mikkelson officiating.

Gladys M. (Olmstead) Mason1917-2001
Gladys M. Mason, 83, Austin, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2000, at St. Mary's
Hospital in Rochester.
Gladys was born May 23, 1917, in Pleasant Valley, Ill, to Burton and
Annie (Wurster) Olmstead. She was united in marriage to Avon Mason on Feb.
6, 1938, in Osage, Iowa. She was a homemaker and worked as a nurses aide.
Survivors include her husband Avon Mason, Austin; daughters and a
son-in-law, Carol (Robert) Brabbit and Sandra Thurnau, Austin; sons and
daughters-in-law, Russell Mason, Austin, Kenneth (Phyllis) Mason, Hastings;
five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters, Ena Rugg, Austin,
Eileen Johns, Rockford, Ill.; sister-in-law, Florence Olmstead, Rockford, Ill.
She was preceded in death by a son Allen Keith, brothers Emery Olmstead,
and Glen Olmstead and her parents.

Marion Josephson 1915-2001
Marion V. Josephson, 85, formerly of Austin, died Saturday, Jan. 13,
2001, at the Adams Health Care Center.
She was born Jan. 25, 1915, in DeKalb, Ill. to Thomas and Clarice
(Johnson) Larson. the family later moved to Minnesota where she attended
Austin area schools. She married Fernly Josephson on March 31, 1934. He died
in 1956. She was employed at Hormel Foods Corp. and her father's grocery
store. She later worked at the Downtown Motel, St. Marks Lutheran Home
and Ankeny's Mini Mart No. 1 until her retirement.
Marion started collecting ceramic dogs in the 1940's and accumulated
a large collection, which was her pride and joy. She enjoyed sewing and
made quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. Other hobbies
included ceramics and arts and crafts.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn Joy and David
Ochs of Sioux Fall, S.D., Sharon and Arnold "Buz" Klitzke of Sioux Falls,
S.D., Terry and Gordon Briggs of Adams; nine grandchildren;
15 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fernly; sisters,
Evelyn Comeau and Dorothy Jones.
Service: 1:30 Friday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Reverend Richard
Kastner officiating. Organist will be Ruth Monson. Soloist will be Jerry
Strating.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and on Friday
one hour before the service.

Helen M. (nee Chase) Hardwick 1921-2001
Helen M. Hardwick, 79 of Austin died Saturday, January 13, 2001, at St.
Mary's Hospital, Rochester.
She was born November 3, 1921, to Leonard and Pearl Mae (Julian) Chase,
in Chatfield. Helen grew up in Austin where she lived her entire life and
married George Hardwick July 9, 1949. An employee of Hormel Foods
Corporation, she belonged to St. Edward's Catholic Church, the American
Legion, VFW and Eagles. She loved to bowl, sew quilts, make dolls and fish.
Survivors include sons, Ray (Cecilia) Heimsness of Stonington, Ill.,
Julian Heimsness of Huntsville, Ala., Bill (Connie) Hardwick of Austin,
Fred (Sylvia) Hardwick of Little Rock, Arkansas; daughters, Kathy Lewis
of Lakeville, Elizabeth (Mike) Ripley of West Concord; 24 grandchildren;
18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Leonard Chase
of Portland, Oregon; sister, Barbara Anderst of Austin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1998; her parents,
Leonard and Pearl Chase; two sisters; four brothers; and one grandson.
Service: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Edward's
Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation: At Worlein Funeral Home Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and
from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Vigil prayers will
be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family prefers memorials to St. Edward's Catholic Church or

Delbert Beyer1931-2001
Delbert Beyer, 69, of New Hampton, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at his home
in New Hampton of natural causes.
Delbert was born July 14, 1931, at Toetervile, Iowa, the son of George
and Alfrieda (Hackbart) Beyer. He was a Mitchell High School graduate.
After graduating he went to work at Oliver Tractor Works in Charles City,
then moved to Victor, Iowa and had a Watkins Route for two years. On Oct.
10, 1953, he married Dorothy Stanton in Vinton, Iowa. After their marriage
the couple resided in Osage, where Delbert worked as a carpenter with his
father and also had a dairy delivery route in Osage. The couple then moved
to Austin where he also had a dairy delivery route. The couple moved to
Charles City where Delbert worked for White Farm Equipment for 28 years.
In 1966, the couple moved to New Hampton, where Delbert worked for the
City of New Hampton for 12 years.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy of New Hampton; sons, Rand Beyer,
Mankato, David (Sharon) Beyer, Waverly, Iowa; daughter, Rhonda (Darrin)
Stewart, Elko; five grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Clayton, Mitchell,
Iowa, Delores Hucke, Otter Tail, Dallas Heinzerling, Otter Tail; brothers,
Donald, Mitchell, Darrell, Osage, Dale, Charles City, Dennis, Fredericksburg,
Iowa, Dean, Mitchell, George (John), Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Calvary Baptist Church in
Charles City with Rev. Steven Brudnak officiating. Edna Reicks will be the
pianist and will accompany the soloist, Blanche Hollerud.
Interment: Osage Cemetery

Derwin Hillson1931-2001
Derwin James Hillson, 69, Minneapolis, formerly of the Blooming Prairie
and Austin area, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the Hennepin County Medical
Center in Minneapolis.
He was born June 22, 1931, in Waltham to George and Adelia (Baumgartner)
Hillson. He grew up in the Waltham area where he attended country school
and helped on the family farm. At the age of 19, Derwin entered the
Minnesota National Guard, serving with the Army Division during the
Korean War. While serving in Korea, Derwin was awarded our country's
fourth highest medal, the Bronze Star, for building a bridge under enemy
fire. After his discharge, he returned to Minnesota where he worked for
Associated Grocery and Hansen Farm Service in Blooming Prairie.
On June 11, 1955, he was married to Marlene Prehoda in Austin. The couple
later divorced. After moving to Minneapolis in 1975, he continued to work
for the Milwaukee Road Railroad and later for Advanced Circuits. He made
his home in Austin from 1998 until entering the Minnesota Veterans Home
in Minneapolis in the fall of 1999. He was a member of the Everett McClay
VFW Post of Bloomington.
He is survived by children, Gary (Kathy) Hillson, Havre, Mont., Randy
(Tracy) Hillson, Apple Valley, Kimberly (David) Schwartz, Austin, Vicki
(Dan) Brekke, St. Paul; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild;
brother, Donald (Anies) Hillson, Charles City, Iowa; sister, Elaine
(Tom) Trotman, Blooming Prairie; several nieces, nephews and other
relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Duane Hillson and
sister Evelyn Prehoda-Mohlbauer.
Service: 11 a.m. Thursday at Worlein Funeral Home with the Rev. James
I. Mikkelson officiating.
Visitation: At the Worlein Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday
and for one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Interment: First Lutheran Cemetery in Blooming Prairie with military
honors by members of the Blooming Prairie VFW Post N. 878 and American
Legion Post No. 52.

Dennis Michael Dreyer 1950-2001
Dennis Michael Dreyer, 50, Walker, formerly of LeRoy, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 in Bemidji.
He was born Oct. 27, 1950, in Austin to Herbert Dreyer and Dorothy Dennis Dreyer. He attended and graduated from Austin High School and married Susan Smith Oct. 2, 1970, at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Austin. Denny did front end alignments for Hanson Tire in LeRoy for 20 years. He was a great outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was active in Ducks Unlimited, President of the Rod and Gun Club and a member of the Minnesota Trout Association. Denny and Sue had moved to Walker about 1 1/2 years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Susan, of Walker; sons, Robert, Mankato, Chris, Walker; one grandson, brothers; David, (Diedre) Dreyer, Brownsdale, Don (Shirley) Dreyer, Taopi, Dwight (Valerie) Dreyer, LeRoy and Dean, Pine Island; and many nieces and nephews.
Service: A funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patricks Catholic Church in LeRoy with the Rev. Russell Scepaniak officiating. The body will be cremated after the service.
Visitation: Friends may call at the Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in LeRoy from 4 to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior at the church.

William A. Johnsen1931-2001
William (Bill) A. Johnsen, 69, of Austin, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at
his home.
Bill was born May 25, 1931, in Austin to Arnold and Pearl Johnsen.
He attended Austin High School and Austin Junior College, where he was a varsity basketball standout. He later played city league basketball where his teams won numerous city and state championships.
In 1956 he married Mary Flannery; they were married for 31 years. Bill resided in Austin his entire life where he owned and operated the B & J Bar for 35 years. Bill was loving, caring, giving person who enjoyed helping his friends and family and favorite charities. He will always be remembered for his jokes and humor.
He is survived by his children; Steve Johnsen, Austin, Jill (Tom) Thelen, Apple Valley, daughter-in-law, Lori Johnsen, Austin; five grandchildren; sisters, Juanita (Donald) Angell, Elkton, Delores (Robert) Deisting, South St. Paul; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Service: Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel.

Ida L. (nee Friedrich) Norman1911-2001
Ida L. Norman, 89, Austin, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at Sacred Heart
Care Center.
Ida was born March 26, 1911, in Hazelton, Iowa, to Wilhelm and Olga
(Klingfus) Friedrich. She attended schools in Iowa in North Dakota before
moving to Austin. She was employed at Hormel Foods Corporation and as a
checkout in grocery stores for many years. On Sept. 7, 1940, she married
Bruce Norman.
She is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Gus (Naomi) Friedrich, Austin, John (Genevieve) Friedrich, Austin, Henry (Jean) Friedrich, Austin, William Friedrich, Austin, Albert (Alice) Friedrich, Williamsburg, Va.; sisters and a brother-in-law, Caroline Lewis, Austin, Edna (Roger) Ludwig, Austin; sister-in-law, Rozella Friedrich, Ft. Collins, Colo.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bud and Eva Norman, Austin, Lorna and Ted Krob, Austin, Nerva and Bill Landa, Calmar, Iowa, Wilma Madison, Turtle Lake, Wis., Alvin Johnson, Marysville, Wash.; aunt, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Harvey John Peterson1928-2001
Harvey John Peterson, 72, of Wykoff, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at
Methodist Hospital in Rochester of lung cancer.
Harvey was born March 25, 1928, south of St. Charles on his grandfather's,
John Hermanson, farm. Haney was the son of Archie and Ollie (Hermanson)
Peterson. The family lived on a farm in Crosby, N.D. from 1930-33 and then
returned to the Pilot Mound area of Fillmore County to farm. In the 40's the
family moved to Lanesboro where Harvey worked for the turkey farmers and for
Matt Bue a Lanesboro photographer.
He served with the Army stateside from
1950 to 1952. He worked at Waters Conley in Rochester for a number of years
and then at Crenlo for 28 years until his retirement. Since then he had
worked part time at Don's IGA in Spring Valley. He married Marguerite
Meyer Jan. 16, 1960, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff.
The family made their home briefly in Rochester then Lanesboro and then
moved to Wykoff in 1962.
Harvey was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff where he served on the parochial school board and was an area shepherd. He was also a member of the Wykoff American Legion and Alcoholics Anonymous.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite; one son, John Harvey Peterson, Rochester; brother, Stanley Peterson, Lanesboro.
Harvey was preceded in death by a son, James, and his parents.
Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Burmeister officiating.
Interment: The church cemetery with military graveside rites.
Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. today at Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley and then at the church one hour before the service on Tuesday.

Josephine M. (nee Peterson) Warfield1904-2001
Josephine M. "Jo" Warfield, age 96 of Austin, died Friday morning,
Jan. 5, 2001 at Sacred Heart Care Center.
She was born June 14, 1904 in Austin, Minnesota to Soren "Sam" and
Lena (Nicholsen) Peterson. After attending school in Blooming Prairie,
Jo attended business college. She married Kenneth Warfield Sept. 24, 1926
in Blooming Prairie. They made their home in Austin where she was secretary to the superintendent in the Austin school district for many years. Jo was also a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.
Survivors include children, Karen (Arthur) Goembel of Austin, Joann (Henry) Oots of Mesa, Arizona, Duane (Judy) Warfield of Rochester; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and two brothers.
Service: Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with The Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating.

Clara A. (Ewert) Griebenow1900-2001
Clara A. Griebenow, 101, of Stewartville, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001 at Stewartville Care Center, where she had lived since March 1996.
Clara A. Ewert was born in Normal, Illinois, on January 5, 1900. She
married Carl L. Griebenow on Feb. 24, 1920 in Pleasant Valley Township. Carl
died in 1981. As a child, her family moved to Alden, Iowa, where she grew
up and graduated from Alden High School. Following her marriage to Carl, the
couple farmed in the Pleasant Valley, Lanesboro, Rochester and Pine Island
areas. After her husband's death, she moved to Stewartville Apartments in
1981. She enjoyed crocheting and gardening. She was a member of St. John's
Lutheran Church in Stewartville and was a charter member of the Ladies Aid
at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley.
She is survived by her children, Dale (Geraldine), Rochester, Donald
(Shirley), Babbit, Miriam Jacobson, Grand Meadow, Jean (Glen) Ellinghuysen,
Stewartville; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 15
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, two brothers, five sisters;
and one great-grandson.
Service: Funeral service was Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in
Stewartville, with the Rev. Lyle Kath officiating.
Interment: Pine Island Cemetery in Pine Island.

Daninah Geneva "Diana" (nee Mehus) Turvold1916-2001
Daninah "Diana" Geneva Turvold, 84, Austin, died at her home in Austin,
Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001.
She was born July 17, 1916 in Northwood, Iowa, to Andrew H. and Helma
(Harmon) Mehus. Diana graduated from Northwood High School in 1935. She
married Maurice E. Turvold on Oct. 10, 1939, in Northwood. They moved to
Osage, Iowa, and in 1942 moved to Austin. Diana enjoyed being outdoors,
traveling, taking care of their home and spending time with their family,
especially the grandchildren.
Survivors include daughter, Donna (Dale) Jarvis, Brownsdale; son, Don
(Kathleen) Turvold, Red Wing; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild;
brother, Dale (Mary) Mehus, Northwood; and sister, Elaine Kiggens, Santa
Anna, California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Marjorie
Haugo and Delphia Mehus.
Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the

Gertrude (nee Klepper) Weydert1912-2001
Gertrude V. Weydert, 88, Adams, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the Austin
Medical Center.
She was born April 10, 1912 in West Bend, Iowa to Michael and Theresia
(Wolfe) Klepper.
She married Leonard Weydert on Oct. 30, 1934, at St. Peter and Paul's
Catholic Church in West Bend, Iowa. They farmed near Adams until 1973.
Then, they moved to Adams and retired. She was a dedicated member of
Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was involved with the church circles
and was president of the Rosary Society from 1955 to 1956. She loved
gardening, flowers, crocheting, cooking, and baking.
She is survived by son, Leonard Weydert Jr., Adams; daughters and
sons-in-law, Theresa Crosby, Maple Grove, Gertrude D. (Donald E.) Von
Feldt, Webster City, Iowa, Carol (Merrill) Evans, LeSueur, Jan (Wayne)
Siffing, La Crescent, Nancy Lee, Adams,, Sandra K. Brintnall, Colorado
Springs, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; many nieces,
nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Weydert, three brothers
and two sisters.
Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev.
Gregory Leif officiating.
Interment: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Adams.

Hildur (Dahlman) Morse1910-2000
Hildur A. Morse, 90, Austin, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at the Austin
Medical Center.
Hildur was born April 2, 1910, in French Lake to Nels and Julia (Nelson)
Dahlman. She was a member of St. Olaf Church and Rebecca Lodge.
Survivors include two daughters, Julianne (Melvin) Bawek, Austin, Mary
Jo Rasmussen, Austin; son, John Guintire, Longmont, Colo.; 11 grandchildren;
17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by two husbands; William Guintire Sr. and George

Walter Rasmussen1914-2001
Walter Rasmussen, 86, Austin, died Monday, January 1, 2001, at Burr Oak
Manor.
He was born Aug. 16, 1914, in Aurora to R. P. and Betila (Jacobson)
Rasmussen. He spent most of his life in the Austin and Owatonna area doing
tiling for a living.
Survivors include a sister, Margaret Morse of Austin.

Troy Bradley Jech1964-2000
Troy Bradley Jech, 36, of Kasson, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Austin
Medical Center of injuries sustained in a snowmobile accident.
Troy was born May 23, 1964, at Austin, the son of Raymond and
Charlene Jech. He graduated from Southland High School and served in
the Air Force. He married Michelle Ann Shaw on Jan. 25, 1986, at Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Adams. He was employed as a maintenance technician
with Southern Minnesota Oil Co., and previously with Rochester Petroleum.
In November, the Jechs moved from Dexter to Kasson. Troy, an easy, outgoing
and friendly person, was an avid outdoorsman, with a special interest in
racing, snowmobiling, motorcycling, boating and water sports.
He is survived by his wife, Michelle Jech, Kasson; daughters Alysia
Jech and Lacey Jech, Kasson; mother and husband, Charlene and Gerald
Nelson, Bullhead City, Ariz.; father's wife, Vida Jech, Rochester;
brother and sister-in-law, Jeffrey and Susan Jech, Austin; mother-in-law
and father-in-law, Jon And Sandra Shaw, Adams, brothers-in-law,
sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, aunt and cousins.
Service: 2 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev.
Gregory Leif officiating. Organist will be Joyce Edland; soloist will be
Dee Hamilton.
Interment: St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Elkton. Honorary bearers will

Earl Lennberg 1916-2000
Earl Lennberg, 84, of Austin, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Burr Oak
Manor in Austin.
Earl was born Nov. 1, 1916, to Otto and Beta Lennberg in St. Paul. He
received his education in St. Paul and Akeley, Minn.
On May 7, 1939, he married Bessie Dunham in Nevis, Minn. They made their
home in Hibbing until 1942, when they moved to Austin. He served with the
Army during World War II.
Earl was employed by Hormel Foods Corp., retiring in 1977. In October
1999, Earl entered Burr Oak Manor. He was an active member of Crane
Community Chapel and the Christian Businessmen Association in Austin.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Lennberg of Austin; a son, Chuck
(Suzanne) Lennberg, Austin; a daughter, Ellamay (Mike) Jennings,
Bloomington; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother,
Roy (Mabel) Lennberg, Baker City, Ore.; a sister, Virginia (Warren)
Potter, Chisholm; several nieces, nephew and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harry Lennberg.
Service: Was held at10:30 a.m. today at Crane Community Chapel with the
Rev. Randy Petersen officiating.
Interment: Following the service at Grandview Cemetery.
Visitation: Was held an hour prior to the service at the church today.

Alice M. (O'Brien) Sheehan1917-2000
Alice M. Sheehan, 83, a former Rochester resident, died Friday, Dec. 29,
2000, at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.
Alice was born Feb. 15, 1917, in Austin to James E. and Anna M. (Laufle)
O'Brien. In 1950, she married James Sheehan at Fort Wayne, Ind. She
graduated from St. Augustine High School in Austin and Northwestern
University in Chicago. After living in Fort Wayne for several years,
they moved to Rochester and lived there for 12 years. She taught school
in the Rochester and Ft. Wayne school systems. While in Rochester, she
was actively involved in her Catholic faith as well as politics.
She is survived by a niece and five nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Winnifred
Sheedy, twin brothers, Tom and Tim O'Brien.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Care Center with Father
Frank Enright officiating.
Visitation: Friends may call an hour before the service at Sacred
Heart Care Center on Wednesday.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery.
