Maudine M. (nee Riley)(Wilson)
Rasmussen

1925-2009

Maudine M. Rasmussen, 83, of Austin, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Que Senior Care, Lindstrom, Minnesota.

Maudine was born July 2, 1925 in Kountze, Texas, to Daniel and Mattie (Taylor) Riley.

Maudine lived her early years in Texas and in 1948 came to Minnesota. She married Lester K. Wilson on March 18, 1948. After his death she married Ervin C. Rasmussen on March 20, 1965.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca (Gregory) Biedermann, Lindstrom; son, Kenneth (Barbara) Wilson, Cromwell; step-daughter, Marilyn (Paul) White, Detroit Lakes and Lake Havasu, Arizona; five grandchildren, Jeremy Wilson, Rock Creek, Nicole (Tom) Sandstrom, East Bethel, Abraham (Jennifer) Wilson, Seaside, California, Mariah (Dan) Tricker, Cushing, Wisconsin, Zachariah Wilson, Duluth; three step-grandchildren, Jenny (Scott) Blatchford, Cloquet, Jill (Chris) Halvorson, Las Vegas, Nev., Jeremy Wasserman, Phoenix, Ariz.; six great-grandchildren, Makensie Biedermann, Athena Wilson, Samantha Sandstrom, Seraphina Wilson, Alec Sandstrom, Milo Tricker; three step-great-grandchildren, Nicole and Nathan Blatchford, Riley Halvorson; sister, Nadine (Hilton) Henschen, Austin; brother, Pat Riley, Lumberton, Texas; many nieces and nephews.

Maudine was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Lester K. Wilson and Ervin C. Rasmussen; four brothers; and three sisters.

Special thanks to her wonderful caregiver, Sue Glenna for the five years of extraordinary care and love she provided our mom, and the special friendships she made while there, especially with “Grandpa”.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Associate in Ministry Todd Portinga officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Mildred (nee Johnson) Petersen

1909-2000

Mildred Petersen, 91, Austin, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at the Austin Medical Center.

Mildred was born on September 23, 1909, in Mitchell County, Iowa to Ole and Nellie (Smith) Johnson. On June 26, 1938, she married Ervin Petersen in Windom. She was a dedicated teacher for 42 years and loved children.

She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Olaf and Monica Johnson, Rose Creek; sister, Marjorie Bugge, Austin; sister-in-law, Viola (Albert) Hughson, Austin; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ervin on Dec. 7, 1993, and a sister.

Service: 11 a.m. on Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Glenn Monson officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Tom Fielding, Jerry Bugge, Jon Lenoch, Jim Schubert, Jim Wolfe and Alan Hughson.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Friday.

Robert Leo Barthelme

1923-2000

Robert Leo Barthelme, 76, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at his home.

He was born Dec. 28, 1923 at Ossian, Iowa. He married Lois Annette Sorum Oct. 8, 1949, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin.

He moved with his family to Rose Creek, attending through the third grade there, then moved to Adams, graduating from Adams High School. He served in the Navy during World War II. After his discharge he was employed at Hormel Packing Plant in Austin. Following the marriage, they lived in Austin through 1952, then moved to Stewartville and worked at Stewartville Cleaners until 1955. They then owned and operated Bob's Cleaners until 1983. At that time Mr. Barthelme was employed by the Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He retired in 1993. He also was a school bus driver for 10 years for the former Glover Bus Service.

He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church and belonged to the American Legion Post 164 and Stewartville Sportsman's Club, The National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the National Letter Carrier's Association.

He is survived by his sons, Robert (Michele) Cortland, Ohio, Kevin (Nannette) Stewartville, John (Ehryn) Rochester; daughter, Bonita Barthelme, Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren; one great- grandchild; two sisters and brother-in-law, Virginia Daily, Austin, Genevieve and Anthony Anastase, Henderson, Nev.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son, daughter and a sister.

Service: Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Stewartville with the Rev. Gregory Havel officiating.

Interment: St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 164 and VFW.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville and at the church one hour prior to the service with at prayer service at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

RoseMary (Ulwelling) Larson

1921-2000

RoseMary Larson, 78, Austin, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

RoseMary was born Nov. 23, 1921, in Rose Creek, to Henry and Genevieve Ulwelling. On Sept. 14, 1954, she married Donald S. Larson in Dayton, Ohio. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jay Carstenbrock, Glen Ellyn, Ill.; three granddaughters; sister, Lucille Evans, Dayton, Ohio; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three infant sisters and a sister, Angela F. Ruggles.

Service: A funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Mayer Funeral Home with Father Paul Nelson officiating.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery. Honorary casket bearers will be Megan and Emily Carstenbrock. The casket bearers will be Larry Larson, Vance Larson, Eldon Russell, Charles Peters, Bill Haney and Molly Carstenbrock. the reader will be Megan Carstenbrock.

Visitation: 6:30 p.m. wake service on Saturday at Mayer Funeral Home and visitation from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and also one hour before the service on Sunday.

Sue Roberts

1937-2009

Sue Roberts, 71, of Elkton, died April 26, 2009, at her home.

She was born May 24, 1937 to Frank and Lucille (Hull) Fowler in Owatonna, Minn. She married Robert Roberts on Aug. 22, 1959 in Owatonna. Mrs. Roberts taught school for 29 years at Southland and Lyle, influencing many elementary students. A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin, she was a volunteer for American Red Cross, enjoyed extensive travel with Elder hostels, playing cards and doing needlepoint. She was also a Twins baseball fan.

Survivors include her husband, Robert, Elkton; three daughters, Jane Roberts, Memphis, Tenn., Sara (Brad) Kluck, Rochester, Nancy Roberts, Austin; son, David Roberts, Lakeville; two grandchildren, Jason and Thomas Kluck; brother, John Fowler, Atlanta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin with the Reverend Michael Olmsted officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin is in charge of arrangements. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery. The family prefers memorials to Mower County Red Cross and Mower County Humane Society.

Ron McClain

1936-2009

Ron McClain, age 72, a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, passed away on April 24, 2009 at his home. Ron enjoyed a successful career in music and real estate.

Ron was born in Rae, Mo. on Nov. 20, 1936 to Ross and Dolly (Griggs) McClain. He graduated from High School in Austin, Minnesota in 1954. He served three years in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958 and was stationed in Germany. He married Bonnie Mae Loew on June 25, 1958 at St. Colombanus Catholic Church in Blooming Prairie, Minn. Julie, their only daughter, was born May 4, 1960. The family moved to Colorado Springs in June of 1962. In 1975 Ron and wife, Bonnie, moved to the Canon City area where they owned and operated Buckskin Joe, along with the KOA campground and Fun Country.

In 1982 they purchased their dream Colorado ranch in Texas Creek Colorado, which they named Stage Coach Ranch. In 2003 they returned to Colorado Springs where they resided until his death. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June of 2008. Ron was a devoted Catholic and a member Corpus Christi Parish and the Knights of Columbus. Ron attended daily mass until his health declined and then watched mass daily on EWTN. He had a great love for the blessed Mother, Mary and the Holy Rosary.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughter, Julie (Dan) Wilde; grandchildren, Bonnie (Jason) San Souci, Mary Wilde, Ross Wilde, Michael Wilde and Paul Wilde; great-grandchildren, Caitlyn Wilde and Eric San Souci; brothers, Stanley (Judy) McClain, Bruce McClain, Mike (Abby) McClain; sister, Annett (Mike) Gutman; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Gertrude Kloberdanz, Sylvia Plunkett, Al Michaelson, Marvin Thompson, Marlys Loew, Jerome (Bernice) Loew, Mary Ann (Darrell) Johnson, William (Nancy) Loew, Bernard (Clarice) Loew, Carolyn (James) Stellick, Gloria (Merle) Peterson, Paul (Judy) Loew, and Henry (Lorraine) Loew, along with numerous nieces and nephews and many, many family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Johnie McClain; along with father and mother-in-law, Matt and Emogene Loew; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Delbert Loew, Norma Thompson, Frank Plunkett, Margie Michaelson, and Joseph Kloberdanz.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful” Chapel. Visitation will continue Wednesday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. The Holy Rosary will be said at 10 a.m. at the church followed by the Mass of Catholic Burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery and a reception will then follow at Corpus Christi fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Corpus Christi School at 2410 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80907.

Lloyd J. Bardouche

1915-2000

Lloyd J. "Buzz" Bardouche, 84, of Austin, died Thursday morning, Oct. 12, 2000 at Adams Healthcare Center, Adams.

He was born Dec. 6, 1915, at Austin to August and Grace (Hallman) Bardouche.

After attending Austin schools, he married Mary Yauger on May 25, 1935.

He served in the Army during World War II and was a corporal in the 725th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Search Light Battery.

After World War II, he was hired at George A. Hormel & Co., where he worked for more than 40 years.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Austin and enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and traveling. He also belonged to the Austin Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Carey, Auburn, Wash.; two grandchildren and five great- grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Arnold Dahl, Wabasha, and Jack (Darlene) Yauger, Austin; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary in 1997; a son, Joe, in 1995; and his parents.

Service: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, with the Rev. Andrew Lindahl officiating; Cindy Jayes, soloist, and Darlene Berhow, organ accompanist.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and an hour before services Tuesday.

Interment: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grandview Cemetery, rural Austin, with graveside military rites by American Legion Post No. 91 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1216 and honorary casket bearers Dale Dahl, Richard Dahl, Donald Goslee, Vernon Graff, Michael Yauger and Robert Yauger.

Valfreda C. (Nasby) Cronkhite

1914-2000

Valfreda C. Cronkhite, 85 and formerly of Oakland, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at Sacred Heart Care Center, Austin.

She was born Oct. 21, 1914, at Oakland, to Iver and Susie Esterby Nasby. She attended school in Oakland through the eighth grade and graduated from Austin High School.

She married Chester Cronkhite on Oct. 6, 1940, at Downers Grove, Ill., and they farmed in the Oakland area.

She was a member of Oakland Lutheran Church, where she was involved with WELCA, circle and the Altar Guild.

Survivors include a sister, Lulu Rolf, Austin; sister-in-law, Louina Nasby, Coos Bay, Ore., and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Chester in October 1997, two children, nine brothers and three sisters.

Service: 1:30 p.m. today at Oakland Lutheran Church with the Rev. Scott Duffus officiating; music by Sheldon Gaard; and casket bearers Ellsworth Jackson, Palmer Nasby, Vernon Nasby, Mervin Nasby, Clarence Nasby Jr., Albert Nasby and honorary casket bearers Bill and Lucy Lyle, Orin and Martha Wangen, Myron and Betty Young.

Visitation: Was Sunday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary, Austin, and an hour before services today at the church.

Interment: Hillcrest Cemetery, Oakland.

Marilyn J. (Paulson) Kelly

1924-2000

Marilyn J. Kelly, 75, of 1407 Fifth St. NW, Austin, died Thursday evening, Oct. 12, 2000, at her home.

She was born December 23, 1924, to Omar and Beatrice (Larson) Paulson at Austin. She lived in Austin all her life.

She married Eugene "Lefty" Kelly on June 8, 1947. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Eastern Star and St. Olaf Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school classes. She was a retired secretary for Hormel Foods Corp.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene "Lefty" Kelly, Austin; a son, Rande Kelly, Owatonna; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Craig Thomas, Oxford, Mich.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Harold L. Usgaard officiating; organist, Neal Erickson; soloist, Jeff Kelly.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, and at the church one hour before the service Tuesday.

Elizabeth Swehla

1902-2000

Elizabeth Swehla, 98, Austin, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

Elizabeth was born Jan. 12, 1902, in Lassell, Germany to Michael and Margaret (Ritter) Schoeben. On Aug. 23, 1920, she married Louis J. Swehla in Ionia, Iowa. Elizabeth and Louis farmed the St. Robert Rosary Making Club and as a result, thousands of rosaries were sent to the missions.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Rosella and A.J. Svejkovsky, Paynesville, Irene Noterman, Faribault, Lois and Bernard Beckel, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Dorothy Swehla, Prescott, Ariz; 24 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter.

She is preceded in death by her husband Louis Swehla on Dec. 25, 1975, six brothers, a sister and a son-in-law.

Service: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson and Father Frank Enright officiating. The mass servers will be great-grandsons Michael Dennison and Alex Svejkovsky.

Visitation: A 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and also from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery. The casket bearers will be grandsons Mark Svejkovsky, Steve Noterman, Bob Noterman, Roger Beckel, Dave Beckel; great-grandson, Philip Dennison.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Sacred Heart Care Center or to the donor's choice.

William Gotz

d: 2000

William M. Gotz, 66, Austin, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000 at his home. He was born Nov. 30, 1933 in Sioux Falls, S.D. to William and Agnes (Kremer) Gotz. He married Lucille Peters on Aug. 27, 1960 in Minneapolis. A retired teacher for Austin Public Schools, William was involved in Habitat for Humanity

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Gotz; sons, William, Austin, Joseph (Lizabeth) Gotz of St. Paul; John Gotz of Minneapolis; daughter, Elizabeth (Robert) Glowac of Rochester; grandchildren, Kate, Calder, Zofie, Isabel and Samantha; sister, Mary Gotz of St. Paul; brother, Jerry (Betty) Gotz of St. Paul; aunt, Josephine Kremer of Rochester; many nieces, nephews, friends and students. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and one sister.

Memorial open house will be held at the Gotz residence Saturday, from 2 to 5:00 p.m. There will be no reviewal. Worlein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are preferred to Habitat for Humanity.

John McAnally

1922-2000

John McAnally, 78, formerly of Austin, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton, Iowa.

John was born April 10, 1922, in Austin to John and Clara (Robinson) McNally. On Oct. 19, 1943, he married Edna Hansen and on Aug. 26, 1999, he married Alice Turley. John was a retired Hormel employee with 46 years of service. He and his first wife, Edna, ran J&E Ceramics in Austin for many years. He and his second wife, Alice, managed the Candieridge Apartments of Newton, Iowa. He was one of the first managers of the year. John was a great baseball fan of the Minnesota Twins.

He is survived by his wife Alice McAnally, Newton, Iowa; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael McAnally and Keri Kiene, Apple Valley, Scott (Marcia) McAnally, Newton, Iowa; daughters and sons-in-law, Carole (Eugene) Anderson, Newton, Iowa, Cynthia (Herbert) Weichert, Valdez, Ark., Kimberly McAnally, Urbandale, Iowa, Jill (Charles) Megraw, Lansing; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; stepson and daughter-in-law, Scott (JoBeth) Ellenwood, Des Moines, Iowa; step daughters and sons-in-law, Bev (Gary) Price, Newton, Iowa, Dana (Larry) Beck, Newton, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Betty McAnally, Austin, Bill McAnally, Faribault, Pat and Evelyn McAnally, St. Cloud.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul, Joseph and David; and his first wife, Edna McAnally.

Service: A 11 a.m. funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson officiating.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin with a 6:30 p.m. wake service, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Austin, with military rites by American Legion Post No. 91 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1216. The honorary casket bearers will be the grandchildren and great- grandchildren. The casket bearers will be Erie Sheldahl, Ted Oswald, Bill Grimes, John Parmenter, Bob Townsen, Harry Boyken and Andy Andrews.

Elsie Cummings

1911-2000

Elsie Cummings, 89, of Austin, died Monday evening, Oct. 23, 2000, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Care Center.

Elsie was born Oct. 17, 1911, in Armington, Ill., to Jesse and Lyda (Baker) LaMaster. On Nov. 22, 1928, she married Edward H. Cummings in Osage, Iowa.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Betty (Darwin) Fossey, St. Ansgar, Iowa, Lois (Glen) Yocom, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Edward (Deanna) Cummings, Austin, Richard (Dellene) Cummings, Austin; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister and brother-in-law, Alberta and Ray Pagel, Bela Vista, Ariz.

She is preceded in death by her husband Edward Cummings on Oct. 22, 1980; her parents; five sisters; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; one great-great-granddaughter.

Service: 1 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Pat Toschak officiating.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Mayer Funeral Home and an hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

Katherine (Brennecke) Schroeder

1920-2000

Katherine G. "Kate" Schroeder, 79, Austin, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at the Austin Medical Center.

Kate was born Nov. 10, 1920, in Stacyville, Iowa, to George and Martha (Miller) Brennecke. She lived in Watertown, Wis. until 1938 when she moved to Austin. On Jan. 20, 1940, she married Frederick "Fritz" Schroeder in Northfield. Fritz was employed as a mechanic for Hormel Foods and Kate worked at Knauer's Market. In 1972 they moved to Adams-Friendship, Wis. Kate returned to Austin on Oct. 23, 1999.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Jim Rasmussen, Austin; four grandchildren; two step great grandsons; sisters and brothers-in-law, Millie and Curt Erdman. Friendship, Wis., Evie and Werner Kaczor, Watertown, Wis.; sister-in-law, Sukie and Eddied Brennecke, Friendship, Wis.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fritz March 5, 1974, an infant son and an infant daughter, two brothers, Eugene and Eddie, a sister-in-law, Betty Brennecke.

Service: A funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Saturday At St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson officiating.

Visitation: A 6:30 p.m. rosary on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and also from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Marjorie (nee Aulwes) Matthiesen

1931-2000

Marjorie Marie Matthiesen, 68, Kasson, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, of a heart attack.

She was born Dec. 22, 1931, to Bud and Betty Aulwes, she was the oldest of four siblings. She grew up primarily in the Austin and LeRoy area and attended schools there. She married Charles Papenfus and together they had three sons. She later divorced. On Feb. 16, 1968, she married David Matthiesen and together they raised seven children. They made their home in Dodge Center and later moved to Mantorville.

Marge was well know for her talents in arranging flowers and making crafts and ceramics. Over the years she owned and operated several businesses, most recently Log Cabin Ceramics in Mantorville.

She is survived by her husband Dave; children, Rocky Papenfus, Mantorville, Ric (Deb) Papenfus, Dodge Center, Ron Papenfus, Kasson, Laurie (Bob) Reynolds, Eagan, Linda (Keith) Cooper, Dodge Center, Judy (Angelo) Kioussis, Toronto, Ontario and Jenny (Bobby Culver) of Eyota; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; sisters Delores Knutson, Bloomington, Shirley (Gene) Hannam, LeRoy; brother, Bill (Mary Lou) Aulwes, Chugiak, Alaska.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kasson.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Dibble Funeral Home

Interment: Cremation will follow and there will be a family memorial service at the Lutheran Cemetery in LeRoy at a later date.

Maxine Bartels

1921-2000

Maxine LaFon Bartels, 79, of Little Falls, formerly of LeRoy, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls.

Maxine was born Oct. 21, 1921, to Ora E. and James C. Whisler in Osage, Iowa. She married Kenneth E. Bartels on Sept. 21, 1942, in Boston, Maine. They farmed for many years in southern Minnesota and in northern Iowa before moving to the Little Falls area in 1964. She was a waitress at the Hub Cafe in Little Falls for 17 years and also at the Black and White Cafe in Little Falls for two years. Her husband Kenneth died Aug. 28, 1981. Maxine enjoyed baking, gardening and flowers.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Paycer, Little Falls; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Burton Whisler, Centralia, Wash.; sisters, Fern Clark, Charles City, Iowa, Ora Hoff, Renton, Wash. and Dorothy Baker, Pittsburg, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth; an infant son; daughter, Fonda Owens; son-in- law, Robert Paycer; brothers, Ray Whisler and Jake Whisler; sisters, Velma Ackerman, Gladys Jones and Mayme Sorenson.

Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Rev. Jim Mikkelson officiating.

Interment: Grandview Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers will be Kevin Andersen, Dean Dykemann, Robert Kuhlman, Jan Whisler, Duane Martin and Merle Krueger.

Ruby F. (nee Johnston) Rector

1907-2001

Ruby F. Rector, 93, Corpus Christi, Texas, formerly of Austin, died Jan. 28, 2001, at Homewood Retirement Residence in Corpus Christi.

She was born July 28, 1907, at Knox City, Mo. to Francis Wesley and Lula Jane (Ashford) Johnston. The family moved to Blue Earth in 1914. Ruby graduated from Blue Earth High School, attended one year of normal school in Mankato and taught six years in Pilot Grove School. She married Clarence Rector in Austin in 1940, where they lived until 1967, when they moved to Corpus Christi. Ruby lived there until her death. She lived in Texas to be near her children, but her heart was always in Minnesota.

Survivors include her son, Richard (Joan) Rector, Corpus Christi; stepson, Warren (Lorene) Rector, Austin; two daughters-in-law, Joanie Mikkelson of San Antonio, Texas; and Bonnie Cox of Corpus Christi; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys Anderson, Blue Earth; many nieces, nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Rector; two sons, Robert Mikkelson and Gary F. Mikkelson; brother, Vernon Johnston.

Service: 11 a.m. Saturday in the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Andrew Lindahl officiating.

Visitation: Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home one hour before the service.

Arlene Flora Closs

1928-2001

Arlene Flora Closs, 72, Austin, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Austin Medical Center.

Arlene was born Dec. 19, 1928, at Dodge Center, the daughter of Louie and Flossie (Northway) Goetsch. She graduated from High School at Grand Meadow and was employed by the Hormel Foods Corporation for 38 years before her retirement. She was married to Lee E. (Lefty) Closs on Oct. 7, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. An avid gardener, Arlene also enjoyed antiquing, playing the organ and spending time at Elysian Lake. She had a special companion, Harold Busker, Austin

She is survived by daughters, Sue Leighton and Jan Enerson, Rose Creek, Rosie (Joe) Vacura, Austin, LeAnn (Don) Larson, Brooklyn Park, Terry Reim and Bob Cruzen, Faribault; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Russell Massey, Isle; brothers and sisters-in-law, Darrell and Lorene Goetsch, Waco, Texas, Jim and Darlene Goetsch, Isle, Tom Goetsch, Becker; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Rev. Andrew M. Lindahl officiating.

Irville T. Olson

1917-2001

Irville T. Olson, 83, Austin, formerly of Lyle, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

Irville was born July 26, 1917, in Hanlontown, Iowa to Theodore and Belle (Gilbertson) Olson. He grew up and attended school in Hanlontown. He served as a tank gunner for the Army during World War II. He participated in major battles in the Marshall Islands, Philippines and Okinawa. Irville received a Good Conduct Medal, Liberation Medal and two Bronze Stars. After the war he returned to Iowa to farm. He bought a farm in rural Lyle in 1948.

On Aug. 19, 1951, he married Priscilla Bjornlie at Dawson. Irville was charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in London and served several years as a church officer. He was also a member of the Austin VFW Post No. 1216. Irville retired from farming and moved to Austin in 1998. He enjoyed farming, animals, being outdoors and time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Priscilla, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Carly Olson, Oakland; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy (Bruce) Nornes, Moorhead, Carol (Philip) Schenck, Grand Rapids; seven grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Guy; sister, Stella.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Faith Lutheran Church in London with Rev. Einar Unseth officiating.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.

Interment: London-Deer creek Cemetery in Northwood, Iowa with military rites by American Legion Post No, 91 and VFW Post No. 1216 of Austin. The casket bearers will be Kermit Leidal, Wayne Leidal, Allen Rohne, Mike Rohne, David Schenck and Michael Schenck.

Carrie Lou Hanson

1953-2001

Carrie Lou Hanson, 47, Austin, died Jan. 25, 2001 of cancer.

She was the daughter of Larry and Dee Hanson, Austin, and Eleanor (Adams) and Dennis Sanders, Minneapolis (both deceased.)

She was born June 3, 1953 in Hartland. Carrie attended school in Albert Lea until 1964, when her family moved to Austin. She graduated from Austin High School in 1971.

She loved to dance, go boating and spend time with her family and friends. She was a life-long animal lover and "mothered" many cats and dogs over the years.

She is survived by her father and step-mother, Larry and Dee Hanson, Austin; sister and brother-in-law, Chris and Gilbert Bercier, Austin; sisters, Cindy Vaughn, Austin, Candy Hanson, Fresno, Calif., brother, Marty Hanson, Austin; nieces and grandnephew.

She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Eleanor and Dennis Sanders; paternal grandparents, Victor and Mary Hanson, Albert Lea and maternal grandparents, Fred and Edna Adams.

Rosina Catherine Enright, 82, Austin, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.

She was born Oct. 14, 1918, in Adams, to John and Anna (Schneider) Fasbender. She married Donald T. Enright on Jan. 21, 1944 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin.

Survivors include her husband Donald, Austin; sons, James Enright, Elk River, Dennis Enright, Bemidji, and Richard (Cecelia) Enright, Austin; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul (Mildred) Fasbender, Austin and Dan (Marietta) Braun, Adams; sisters, Mary Thorson, Austin and Bernadine (Pete) Schmidt, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Tony Braun; sister, Margaret Stancl and brother Leo Fasbender.

Service: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Virgil Duellman and Father Frank Enright officiating.

Vernon Billie Henaman

1927-2001

Vernon Billie Henaman, age 73, of Austin, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at Burr Oak Manor.

He was born June 10, 1927 in Hartley, Iowa to Charles and Minnie (Muller) Henaman. He married Dorothy Mork Oct. 24, 1958 in Mason City, Iowa. They farmed for almost 36 years near Greenwood, Wis. and moved to Austin in September, 1994. A member of National Farmers Organization (NFO), Vern was first runner-up for the Young Farmers Award in 1961 in Greenwood. He was also a member of First Congregational Church (UCC).

Survivors include wife Dorothy of Austin; daughters, Rachel (Dave) Rogstad of Racine, Wis., Clara Jane (Dennis) Zielinski of Wausau, Wis., Betty Lou Hoff of Eau Claire, Wis., Esther (Richard) Lobacz of Greenwood, Joyce (Ron) Johnson of Augusta, Wis., Janet (Steven) Halderman of Augusta; sons, James (Jeannie) Henaman of Wausau, Jon (Carla) Henaman of Granton, Wis.; 30 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Hughes of Spencer, Iowa, Esther (Harvey) Baxter of Spencer, Iowa, Velma Grover of Spencer, Norma Jean (Don) Schroeder of Austin; brother, Darrel Henaman of Lyle; nieces, nephews.

Norbert Anthony (Norb) Bawek

1933-2001

Norbert Anthony (Norb) Bawek, 67 of Austin, died Wednesday , Jan. 24, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester after a long struggle with cancer.

Norbert was born Feb. 9, 1933, in rural Rose Creek to Benjamin and Theresa Koenig (King) Bawek. He moved to a farm NW of Austin when he was about 6 years old. There he attended Country School in Freeborn County. He graduated from Austin High School in 1951, where he played guard for the 1950 State Champion Football team. He also wrestled and was a member of FFA.

He was married to Janet Crandall for 22 years; they had six children. Mrs. Tony (Peggy) Petersen, Kansas City, Mo., Ms. Debra Swanson, Austin, Mr. Randy Bawek, Austin, Mr. Bradley Bawek, Rockville, Md., Mr. Brian Bawek, Austin, and Mr. Paul Bawek, Sacramento, Calif.

They were divorced in 1973. Later Norbert married Jacqueline (Jackie) Corbin on Sept. 4, 1987. He had one stepson Scott Cain.

Norbert worked at Wilson's Packing Plant in Albert Lea, Usems in Austin, IBM in Rochester and Hormel in Austin from which he retired.

Norbert was very active in the Moose Lodge in Austin where he was a member for 31 years. He was active on the Degree Team, bowling team, and played softball. He was also a member of the Austin Boxing Club. Norbert loved to travel and he did so whenever possible. He loved life and the only strangers to him were the people he had yet to meet.

He is survived by his wife Jackie Bawek; brothers Robert, Melvin and Luvern, Austin, Leo, Smyrna, Tenn., Ron, Harrington, Del.; sisters Darlene Reuter, Waterloo, Iowa, and Janet Roberts, Blooming Prairie; children; 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Norbert is preceded in death by his father; mother; brothers, Gilbert and Eugene Bawek; sisters Alice Bawek and Lurena (Renee) Haney.

Service: A memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery

Visitation: From 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday evening at Mayer Funeral Home, concluding with a service of reflection/sharing.

Lawrence Branum

1915-2001

Lawrence Branum, 85, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at his home.

Lawrence was born May 2, 1915, at Esmond, N.D., the son of William and Iva (Bangle) Branum. He was married to Ethel A. Holmquist on June 28, 1941, at the Moscow Lutheran Church, Moscow, Minn. He served in the Army during World War II and was a retired employee of the Hormel Foods Corporation. Lawrence was an active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the Mower County Senior Citizens Center and the Civil Conservation Corp. A storyteller, carpenter and mechanic, he was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Ethel; son and daughter-in-law, Earl (Martha) Branum, Chatfield; daughter and son-in-law, Janet (Bryan) Adams, Elk River; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Warren (Eva) Branum, St. Paul; sisters and brother-in-law, Francis (Willie) Dikman, Randall, Mary Miller, New Brighton; nieces and nephews.

Shirlee (nee Borgesen) Baumann

1930-2001

Shirlee Mae Baumann, age 70, of Austin, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 23, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born April 13, 1930, to Peter and Hilda (Gunderson) Borgesen in Austin. She attended school in Austin before moving to California. She returned to Minnesota, where she met and married Donald Baumann Sr. in St. Paul in 1948. They made their home in Minneapolis, where Shirlee worked as a waitress. After her divorce in 1968, Shirlee moved to Austin, where she worked as a waitress and teacher's aide. She was an avid singer. At the age of 14, she sang with Demeti Metropolis, the Minneapolis symphony conductor, as well as for USO shows and other clubs over the years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Austin.

Her partner and care-giver was Larry Mitchell, Austin.

Survivors include a daughter, Gail Baumann, Minneapolis; two sons, Donald Baumann Jr. and William Baumann, both of Minneapolis; four brothers and sisters, Byron (Arlene) Borgesen, Austin, Esther (Andrus) Severson, Brainerd, Vickie Eastburn, Austin, and Stanley (Kathy) Borgesen, Austin, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Pearl "Judy" Renairs.

Service: 1 p.m. Friday at Worlein Funeral Home with the Rev. Kristin K. Wee officiating.

Richard L. Wehner Sr.

1939-2001

Richard L. Wehner Sr., 61, of Austin, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

Richard was born Jan. 30, 1939, in Austin to Leo and Helen (Sheedy) Wehner. He was the owner of Lansing Landfill, Wehner Rolloff and Dick Wehner Crane Service and Excavating. Dick was past president of Eagles Aerie 703, past board member of the Mower County Fair Board, and was a member of the Elks, Moose, American Legion and Local 49 Operating Engineers.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard "Rick" Jr. and Monica Wehner, Austin, Herbert and Sarah Wehner, Austin; five grandchildren; a sister, Beverly Ziemer, St. Paul; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald.

Service: A funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Virgil Duellman officiating. There was a 7 p.m. wake service Sunday at Mayer Funeral Home. Casket bearers were Ryan Wehner, Nicholas Wehner, Dick Johnson, Clarence Wehner, Paul Van Pelt and Brendhan Wagner.

Robert W. Auron

1955-2001

Robert W. Auron, age 45, of Austin, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.

Robert was born Nov. 28, 1955, In Evergreen Park, Ill., to Benjamin and Collette (Gaffney) Auron. On Aug. 9, 1980, he married Laura Marxen in Minneapolis. He was the Mower County assistant attorney.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Auron; a son, Brian Auron, Austin; two daughters, Molly Auron and Sarah Auron, Austin; father, Benjamin Auron, Eagan; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Martin Auron, Eagan, Thomas (Jeanne) Auron, New Brighton, James (Jodi) Auron, Madison, Wis.; a sister and brother-in-law: Kathleen (Russell) Hayes, Minnetonka; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Norbert and Patricia Marxen, brothers-in-law, Robert Marxen, St. Paul, James (Kathryn) Marxen, Montgomery; sisters-in-law, Gaile (Steve) Bjerke, New Ulm, Beth (Rob) Mahle, Coon Rapids, Joan Marxen, New Prague, Ellen Marxen, Brainerd, Amy and Don Cheney, Apple Valley; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Collette Auron.

Visitation: There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service today at Mayer Funeral Home, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and also from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery. Casket bearers will be the Austin Arsenal Soccer Team: Jake Bowman, Jake Bungum, Alex Erickson, Josh Hansen, Mike Inthisane, Jacques Leger, Drew Lewis, Dustin Lunde, Jesse Morgan, Aaron Oesterle, Drew Oesterle, Shone Peterson, Jim Reetz, Jon Ruhnka and Scott Wheeler

Louise M. (nee Gorman) Ellis

1922-2001

Louise M. Ellis, 78, of Austin, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center.

Louise was born Dec. 9, 1922, in Austin to Cornelius and Mary (Gilligan) Gorman. In 1941, she married Clyde Ellis in Austin. She worked as a nurse's aide at Burr Oak Manor.

She is survived by her husband Clyde Ellis, Ostrander; son and daughter-in-law, Larry (Mary) Ellis, Emerson, Neb.; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Bud (Marion) Gorman, Seattle, Wash.; sisters and a brother-in-law, Shirley (Wayne) Colglazer, Reding, Calif., Viola Deyo, Austin; nieces and nephews.

Service: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Thursday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Virgil Duellman officiating.

Visitation: There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Wednesday at Mayer Funeral Home, where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. and also from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Nordean Oliver Christianson

1915-2001

Nordean O. Christianson, age 86, of Blooming Prairie, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Prairie Manor Nursing Home, Blooming Prairie.

Nordean Oliver Christianson was born Jan. 15, 1915, to Ingebret and Betsy (Egtvedt) Christianson in Udolpho Township, Mower County. He was baptized and confirmed at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church and remained a member all his life. He was a carpenter and worked at Gandy's in Owatonna until his retirement.

Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Avis Christianson, and Clinton and Adeline Christianson, all of Blooming Prairie; a sister, Irene Filley, Blooming Prairie; sister-in-law, Alfrieda Christianson, Blooming Prairie; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Borghild Detwiler and Ruby Christianson, and four brothers, Leon, Berthel, Paul and Raymond Christianson

Service: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church with the Rev. Myrwood A. Bagne officiating.

Interment: Red Oak Grove Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation: Friends may call at Blooming Prairie Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Prairie Manor Chapel, and at the church one hour before the service on Wednesday.

Jeanette Irene (nee Davis) Gilbert

1922-2001

Jeanette Irene Gilbert, 78, of Elkton, died Friday evening, Jan. 19, 2001, at her home in Elkton.

She was born Jan. 20, 1922, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Doris Irene (Curley) Davis in Mitchell County, Iowa. She started elementary school in Lyle before moving with her family to a farm southeast of Dexter in the fall of 1928. She graduated from Elkton Public School in 1939. At the start of World War II, Jeanette and several area girls went to Rockford, Ill., where they worked at the National Lock Defense plant making aircraft bolts.

On Aug. 16, 1943, she married Donald Gilbert at her parents' farm. They made their home in Avon Park, Fla., while Donald was in the Air Force, returning to Minnesota at the end of the war. They moved to the Gilbert family farm, where they lived and farmed for 33 years. In addition to helping with farm chores, Jeanette also raised laying hens. After Donald's death on March 1, 1978, Jeanette moved to Elkton in 1981.

She was a member of Dexter United Methodist Church, where she held several offices with the United Methodist Women. She was a member of Adrian Lee American Legion Post No. 170 of Dexter, a Gold Star Mother of the Grand Meadow American Legion Post Auxiliary No. 140 and a Gold Star Mother with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 1216 of Austin. She enjoyed square dancing, card club and designing and making quilts.

Survivors include three children, Shirley Lange of Las Vegas, Nev., LaVerne (Lea Ann) Gilbert of Dexter and Bernadine (Mike) Lee of Hayfield; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her mother, Doris Davis of Hayfield; four sisters, June Philip, Tucson, Ariz., Audrey (Dale) Rolfson of Bemidji, Beverly (Elverne) Mees of Dexter and Maxine (Robert) Thompson, Plymouth; a sister-in-law, Angeline (Lynn) Buschmann-DeBoer, Stewartville; also many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father; husband; a son, Stanley Gilbert; and three infant grandchildren, twins, Tim and Tom Lange and Angela Lee.

Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dexter United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Wilson officiating.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at Worlein Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Interment: Dexter Cemetery.

Leona Shoop

1911-2001

Leona Shoop, 89, of Austin, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

Leona was born Sept. 9, 1911, in Fremont Township, Winnishiek County, Iowa, to Culbert and Bertha (Olson) Peterson. In April 1939, she married Edward Lee Shoop. He preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 1990. She worked in food service at Austin High School for many years.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gary (Norma) Shoop, Austin; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary (John) Lyle, Monmouth, Ill., Cheryl Shoop, Rochester, Barb (John) Page, Spring Valley, Sonia (Mike) King, Austin; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and five brothers.

Service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home with Pastor Greg Mannel officiating.

Visitation: Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Mayer Funeral Home.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery. Casket bearers will be David Shoop, Debbie Kos, Mark Lyle, Andy Page, Tom King and Matt King.

Elroy L. Morgan

1913-2001

Elroy L. Morgan, 87, of 700 First Drive NW, Austin, died early Saturday morning, Jan. 20, 2001, at Austin Medical Center.

Elroy was born on Sept. 1, 1913, in Parkston, S.D., to Evan and Leota (Boyle) Morgan. He graduated from Parkston High School in 1931 and then moved to Austin after graduation. He began working for Hormel Foods Corp. in 1931, first in the beef boning department then later in plant construction. He retired in 1978 after 47 years of service. During his employment at Hormel, Elroy was called into military service and was stationed in Las Vegas, Nev., with the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1944.

Elroy was united in marriage to Margaret Louise Gainey on Jan. 8, 1942. They lived in Las Vegas, Nev., and moved to Austin in 1944 upon his discharge from military service. After Elroy and Margaret raised four children, their plans for traveling during retirement were cut short because of Margaret's illness and death in 1980. Elroy loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren and pursued his interests in bowling, gardening and traveling. Highlights of his travels included visiting Hawaii and two cross-country trips with family members. Elroy also taught his children and grandchildren the fine art of playing cribbage. He was an avid reader. When his eyesight diminished in recent years, Elroy began listening to Minnesota Public Radio. Over the years, his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and family friends were treated to his rare wit and sense of humor.

Elroy is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Wayne Learn, Red Wing; daughters, Judy Morgan, St. Paul; Joan Morgan, Austin; and son, Jim Morgan, Spring Valley; three grandchildren; 17 nieces, nephews and special nephew, Gary W. Morgan, Houston, Texas.

He is preceded in death by his wife Margaret; all his brothers and sisters: Inez Morgan, Bruce Amos, Ruth Morgan, Homer Morgan, Esther Carpentier, Lorraine Hammerback; and his parents.

Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home with Pastor Donald Shilts and Father Virgil Duellman officiating.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service on Tuesday.

Memorials are preferred to the American Lung Association.
