Lieut. Osper John Anderson1895-1918

Dec. 23, 1918
LIEUT. ANDERSON DEAD
After Plucky Fight For Life Popular Young Man Passes Away
Another blue star of our country’s service flag turned to gold this morning at 10:30 when Lieut. Osper J. Anderson passed away at the hospital at the age of 23 years.
Osper was one of the most popular men of the city, loved alike by young and old. With the young people he was a genial, happy companion and he met his elders with a smile and a cheery greeting. Possessed of an unusual intellect, studious and ambitious, his future held bright prospects. In his death Austin lost a fine character.
Osper was born at Littlehammer [sic] Norway, Sept. 14, 1895 and came to America with his father and mother, Mrs. J.A. Anderson and his brother Berger in 1902. The family resided for a year at Lansing and then came to Austin. Osper secured his education in the public schools and after graduating from our high school went to the state U.
He joined Battery B. and went to the Mexican border June 17. On his return he went into the land business with Ed Holcomb. On June 14 he went to the cantonment at Camp Zachary Taylor where he secured his commission as second lieutenant. He was discharged from active service but remained on the reserve officers list and came home Nov. 29.
On December 12 he was taken ill with influenza and pneumonia followed and he was taken to the hospital two days later.
Throughout his entire illness he was the same cheerful smiling Osper and up to within an hour or two of his death he met with all inquiries with a smile.
He leaves father, mother and brother Berger.
The funeral will be a military one with escort and firing squad from Co. C as escort. The Duodecim and alumni will attend the body. The funeral will be from the Earl Undertaking rooms at 10:30 Tuesday morning, Rev. Brown officiating.
